Healthy Gums Healthy gums are a part of a healthy smile and you can take these steps to keep your gums healthy: brushing, cleaning between your teeth with floss or another inter-dental cleaner, visiting your dentist regularly. All of these are important in preventing gum disease. Gum disease is caused by plaque. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on everyone’s teeth all the time. This bacteria can damage the teeth and gums which is why it is important to brush and clean between your teeth every day. Plaque can harden along the gum line forming a substance called calculus. This calculus accumulation causes the pocket depth to increase. The space between the gums and the teeth is called the pocket. Once the pocket depth increases it causes more plaque to get trapped in these spaces. Calculus can only be removed with a professional cleaning by a dentist or a hygienist. Gum disease affects the tissues that support your teeth causing them to pull away from the tooth. It can be limited to just the soft

tissue (gums) or it can progress to the bone that supports your teeth. In severe cases you can lose teeth because of gum disease. Symptoms of gum disease include gums that are red and swollen which bleed easily, gums that seem to have pulled away from the teeth, constant bad breath, pus between your teeth and gums, teeth that seem to be loose or moving away from one another, change in your bite and change in the way your partial dentures fit.

Common Paint Problems Paint can do wonders to breathe new life into the appearance of a dingy old room or the otherwise tired exterior of a home. Appearance aside, a good coat of paint on interior walls and woodwork can them more abrasion resistant and easier to clean – especially where little ones are involved. On the exterior, paint provides a protective coating against oxidation and rot. As with the interior, good paint — properly applied — will resist oxidation and staining and can be kept looking good with an occasional rinsing with water and garden hose. Regrettably, many do-it-yourselfers pay more attention to color – albeit important – than they do to preparation. There is a well known saying in the professional painting world that “70 percent of a good paint job has to do with preparation.” Simply put, that’s the cleaning, scraping, sanding, puttying, caulking and priming. All else being equal, high quality paint combined with thorough preparation is a winning recipe for a paint job that will look good and last a long time. One of the most important parts of preparation is dealing with paint problems that may not be solved with a fresh coat of paint such as blistering, chalking, nail head rusting and paint incompatibility – to name a few. In fact, it would suffice to say that you may end up having to paint twice unless the cause of these (and other) common paint problems are first addressed and solved. What follows are some of the most common paint problems, their causes and what you can do to solve them. Paint incompatibility: Typically this condition exists where latex (water base) paint is applied over several coats of old oil base paint. The paint refuses to stick and easily peels. This can usually

be prevented by sanding the existing oil finish and applying a coat of oil base primer followed by a latex finish coat. Most diyers and pros alike are opting for latex paint due to its ease of application and quick cleanup. Blistering paint: These resemble medium to large water blisters. With few exceptions, paint blisters are almost always moisture related. The origin can be from excessive interior moisture escaping through the exterior walls; a leak around windows, doors or from the roof that is allowing moisture to make its way behind the paint; painting a warm surface in direct sunlight or painting a “green” surface that is damp or wet. Popping the blisters and patching, sanding, priming and painting is at best a temporary fix. Your best bet is to find the source of the problem, fix it and then paint. Chalking: Chalk is great on blackboards, but is miserable when it’s on the outside of your home. There nothing worse than having someone brush up against the siding on your front porch only to have their Sunday best look as if they’ve been rolling in a dust pile. While some chalking can be attributed to normal oxidation, excessive chalking is usually associated with the use of “bargain basement” paints that contain lots of cheap fillers such as clay and less of the more expensive titanium dioxide, which gives paint its hide. Another common cause of chalking is using an interior paint outdoors. Solution: buy the best paint that you can afford and never use an interior paint outdoors and vise versa. Nail head rusting: If your siding looks like it has the mumps, what you probably have is rusting nail heads bleeding through the surface of the paint. Rusting nail heads can result from using non-galvanized iron nails; non-galvanized iron nails that were not countersunk, filled and primed; or galvanized nail heads that have lost their galvanic protection from sanding or weathering. Solve the problem by washing off the rust stains, lightly sand the nail heads and countersink them slightly below the surface of the siding. Apply a

Poor gloss retention: The paint had a mirror-like finish when you first applied it, but now it’s duller than dirt. More often than not this condition is caused when using a gloss oil base paint in areas that are exposed to direct sunlight. It can also be caused when using an interior paint outdoors or applying poor quality paint – see chalking. Although virtually all paints will lose some degree of luster over time, this condition can best be avoided by using latex paint in areas that have prolonged exposure to the sun. The binders in latex paints are especially resistant to the oxidizing UV rays of the sun. Poor quality paints will also oxidize more rapidly. Bankruptcy Gets Rid Of Payday Loans Many people wonder, what is a payday loan? Payday lenders offer small, short term loans with little or no credit check or income verification. They are usually small shops in strip malls. Typically the loans are for about $300 and are due in 14 days. If the borrower fails to pay either the $50 or the full $300, then the payday lender deposits the postdated check. These loans are easy and convenient but carry interest rates ranging from 100% to 500% on an annualized basis. How can that be legal? Payday lenders exploit loopholes in the usury laws so that even a 500% interest rate is legal. With interest rates like that, it’s no wonder payday lenders are popping up like weeds in the spring!

Most people who borrow from a payday lender have been turned down for traditional loans and only out of desperation take a payday loan. Too often, the person takes a second payday loan to pay the first and begins a downward cycle. Like quicksand, the payday loan cycle is nearly impossible to get out of. Soon the person – in dire financial straits before the first payday loan – has several loans with payments due every two weeks. Often the payments are taken directly out of the borrower’s bank account on payday, hence the name. As the cycle continues, the borrower goes deeper and deeper in debt. Many borrowers will have 5 or more payday loans, usually from different lenders. Soon some of the post-dated checks begin to bounce, marking the beginning of the end. As the checks bounce, the borrower incurs bounced check charges, further compounding the problem. Often on the verge of eviction due to unpaid

rent, the borrower asks “How can this craziness end?” The answer might be bankruptcy. A bankruptcy is a federal court order that gives people a “fresh start” by forgiving debts including payday loans. How to Lobby Your Legislator June is a busy time in the California Legislature. During the first week of the month, we Assembly members must vote on all of the bills proposed in the Assembly this year and which survived the committee process. The state Senate does the same for legislation proposed in that chamber. Everyone is focused on meeting the June 15 deadline to adopt a state budget. It is also a time when residents of the 11th Assembly District should let me know what they think about the pending legislation. Yes, believe it or not, before I vote on any bill, I read through the comments my constituents have made about it. Whenever residents of Assembly District 11 call, email or write my office and voice their opinions about a piece of legislation, my staff makes a record of it. I also reflect on the opinions I’ve heard while I’ve been out and about in the

District. Whether it’s at a farmers market, a Cup of Joe with Jim event, or a Chamber of Commerce mixer, I want to hear what the people who live in my Assembly District think about the issues coming before me in the Legislature. Umbrella of Hope Rescue is an allvolunteer, nonprofit animal rescue program in Eastern Contra Costa County. Their main focus is the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of animals from shelter situations, and their feral-fix and community-assist programs in forever homes. What’s great is they also rescue everything from dogs to cats to turtles and birds! Started in 2010, Umbrella of Hope Rescue was founded by Dr. Laurie Noe DVM and Dee Petersen. Their inspiration to start a rescue program was the general love of animals and to reduce the euthanization rate in Contra Costa County. They wanted to increase public awareness, as far as the number of homeless pets, encourage spay and also neutering of companion animals. Adoption is always encouraged to families looking for that perfect pet too. Umbrella of Hope already has an impressive track record. In 2014 alone, they saved over 500 animals, 97% of

Umbrella of Hope receives no government funding. They operate strictly through grants and public donations. They pay no salaries to anyone involved with their program, and all of the money received goes to animal care. They ensure that all of their dogs are spayed and neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated, free of parasites, have completed lab work, and had a dental cleaning. Adoption fees range from $0-250 and are partially tax deductible. They also give free pets to retired or discharged veterans of the U.S. Military and adoption fees for pets age five and over are only $5 to people 55 or older. An additional service Umbrella of Hope provides is a foster program. Fostering a pet can be a very rewarding experience. Animals provide countless hours of entertainment, education, and enrichment for the entire family. Many families love fostering so they can teach their children the responsibility of caring for an animal. They also have need for available interns every semester, and applications are accepted year round, and can be applied towards school credit. With summer here, this is a great opportunity for students
