A nice young man gave a gracious hello right away and asked if we would like inside or outside seating. Outside, of course, since you have a wonderful view of the harbor and the Delta. Ten extra points right off the bat.

Dining on the Delta Today is Sunday, the day before Memorial Day. As most of the residents of East County know, the traffic is one solid line from Livermore to the Ag Core with those in search of our famous cherries. The weather did not let the farmers down because at noon it is a comfortable 80 degrees and the crops were gleaming. After my morning pick at G & S Farms for this year’s bucket of the sweetest Bings, I opted to go on my assignment for lunch. This is a real treat for me since I have been a regular customer since the Boardwalk Grill opened and know Chris and Erica very well. They are the hardest working couple ever and have created a real Shangri-La on the Delta in Discovery Bay. So, for the sake of this snoop, join me on my journey. With plenty of parking, it was a snap to get to the front door. We knew right then our experience was going to be good as the customers leaving held the door for us and kindly said “the food is great!”

The patio was about full, but we were able to find a seat with a perfect view of the water and the big screen hosting the Indy 500. Our darling waitress, Mariah, welcomed us with a beautiful smile in less than one minute. Menus in hand and decaf ordered, we took time to read the whole menu and were amazed at the wonderful selection for breakfast, including several options of Eggs Benedict and Belgian Waffles. More points! First time ever, I ordered Boardwalk Grill Scramble, a platter of bacon, ham, two cheeses, onion, scrambled eggs, potatoes baked with sour cream on top. Added avocado and salsa, making is uniquely mine. More points! I think the thing I like most about this place is the cleanliness and great service. You feel like you are on vacation because the atmosphere is always full of life and laughter. Did I mention that you can bring your dog to the patio dining area so you don’t have to leave them on the boat. That’s right, you can tie up your boat to the dock, walk about twenty feet up the

Last week, we went with friends for Taco Tuesdays and they were the best tacos ever, and the Margaritas were exceptional. Both menus include a variety of dishes from kids size to great steaks for the adults. Like I said, we are regulars, so I don’t think I even noticed all the extras until this assignment, like the decor, clean bathrooms, comfortable seating and background music. Most of the time we see so many friends and neighbors, it just feels like home. Back to breakfast, the waitress delayed our decaf to brew a fresh pot, the scramble was amazing, the empty plates left as soon as we were finished and the bill was delivered with the same beautiful smile. So, is this a place you should frequent? You bet! Tell them the snoop sent you. TRAVEL TIME It’s summer and you know what that means in our world of travel right? It means high demand and lots of patience as well as trying to not get steamed up over all the long lines in some of our airports that we are experiencing these days. There is a solution for many right now and you will find it very easy to resolve this problem. It’s called TSA PRE CHECK. We have had it for nearly two years now and both Bill and Fred have been using it when they travel. It’s easy and it’s fast and you don’t have to remove your shoes nor take out your laptop or take off your belt of watches or jewelry. In some ways it’s like it was pre 911. You may ask if you qualify? It’s really simple and we are providing you some of the guidelines and info you will need to make it happen for you and your family and friends. There is a website of course and

their PreCheck qualification. Then, when a boarding pass is generated a check is made with the TSA and usually PreCheck is granted and added to the document.

you actually apply on this website by answering a few simple and basic security questions. Then, you make an appointment while you are online at one of the TSA service centers in our area. Ours were located in both Martinez and Stockton when we both signed up almost 2 years ago.

Here are the airlines currently participating: Allegiant Airlines, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, OneJet,Southwest Airlines, Sun Country, United Airlines, Virgin America and WestJet.

What’s it really all about? The program allows previously vetted fliers to use special lanes at the checkpoint. These fliers go through standard metal detectors rather than the explosive-detecting full-body scanners most pass through.

And there you have it. Sound good to you? By the way, SFO is one of 22 airports and has hired an independent firm to handle the TSA procedures so at least for us out of SFO you should not see anything other than standard wait times of 20 minutes or less in most cases.

Travelers get PreCheck if they are a member of one of the Customs and Border Protection’s expedited entry programs — Global Entry, Nexus and Sentri — or by joining directly with the TSA. Membership in these programs ranges from $50 to $100 for five years. Travelers can fill out an application online and it then takes some time for the government to approve the application and schedule an in-person interview, typically at an airport. Those without a passport can just get PreCheck for $85.

Melanoma Melanoma is a malignant cancer of the melanocytes or the dark pigmented cells. Although melanoma accounts for only 5 percent of all skin cancers it is the cause of three times as many deaths as are non-melanoma cancers. The incidence of malignant melanoma has been increasing at the rate of 5 to 7 percent annually in the United States for the past several years. The current lifetime risk of developing melanoma is estimated to be 1.97 percent or one in 51 people. The risk factors are genetic predisposition, fair skin, blue or green eyes, red or blond hair and freckles, immunosuppression and presence of having multiple nevi and also a family predisposition of having a history of melanoma. Other risk factors include having a history of sunburns because of sever exposure to sun and frequent use of tanning beds. Prevention should be aimed at minimizing the modifiable factors by means of using sunblock and

Melanomas mostly occur on the skin which is about 91.2 percent of them. Of these melanomas almost 25 percent occur in the head and neck region and 40 per cent on the hands and legs and the rest on the trunk. Sometimes melanomas can affect the eyes too and the mouth as well. Significant melanomas develop within preexisting pigmented lesions.

June Gardening Checklist

• Pull or spot-spray those weeds. Early in the month, make a second application of weed preventer to the shrub and flower beds to stop later-germinating annual weeds, especially if it’s been cool and rainy. The second application should be timed 9 to 12 weeks after the first one.

The June gardening checklist that will help you know the key things to take care of this month including, pests, plantings, pruning, mulching and more. • Keep your gardens watered—especially those plants you added in April and May! We’re heading into the hottest, driest time for most regions. Consider installing soaker hoses or drip-irrigation lines if hand-watering is getting to be too much. • Houseplants will need more water and fertilizer during the summer growing period. Pay special attention to houseplants moved outdoors, making sure they do not dry out or get sunburned. • Trim evergreen hedges (boxwood, yew, arborvitae, juniper, privet, hemlock, etc.). Spruce, fir and pines also can be pruned back, if needed, now that most of the new growth has occurred. Remove only the new growth of these… not older wood or you’ll risk killing branches. Apply fungicide to prevent and control

• Scout for pest problems and treat as needed. Among the trouble you might run into this time of year are bagworms on evergreens and shade trees, borers on birch and dogwood, woolly adelgids on hemlock, lacebugs on azalea and pieris, spider mites on spruce, hemlocks and juniper, and scale on euonymus. Avoid spraying when temperatures are more than 85 degrees. • Harvest spring-planted vegetables. Don’t leave any space bare from pulled plants, though. Replant immediately with summer crops of beans, carrots, corn, peppers, beets, pumpkins, potatoes or cucumbers. • Tie cauliflower leaves up over the developing heads to blanch (i.e., exclude from light) when heads are 2 inches in diameter. • Discontinue harvest of asparagus and rhubarb in mid-June to allow foliage to develop and store food reserves for next year. Apply an all-purpose fertilizer

according to label directions. Water when dry. • Plant your Halloween pumpkin. The seed packet will tell you the number of days to harvest. Count backward to find the proper planting date. • Remove faded blooms from peonies, irises, delphiniums and other perennials. • Apply Preen Mulch Plus Russet Red, Midnight Black or Chestnut Brown to prevent weeds for up to six months, providing better, more effective controls for a longer period than any other mulch on the market. Preen Mulch Plus is made of premium hardwoods enhanced with two herbicides to prevent broadleaf and grassy weeds from germinating for up to six months. • Keep grass mowed regularly, maintaining height about 1/2-inch higher than usual to protect crown of plant from heat stress. • Don’t remove clippings from the lawn unless grass is excessively tall. Clippings return nutrients to the soil and do not contribute to thatch buildup.

Can I Avoid Bankruptcy By Creating A Trust To Protect My Assets From Creditors? The answer is found at the intersection of trust and bankruptcy law. At the start, I want to define terms. A trust is a legal entity that can own and control assets including real and personal property. Practically speaking, a trust is little more than a folder of papers, but in the eyes of the law those papers create a legal entity. Bankruptcy law can forgive many debts but requires a showing of financial hardship. Financial hardship for bankruptcy purposes considers a person’s monthly income as well as their assets. Too much income, or too many assets, and bankruptcy may not be an option. People considering bankruptcy often ask, “Can I avoid bankruptcy by creating a trust to protect my assets from creditors?” To answer requires a brief description of the two major types of trusts: revocable and irrevocable. A revocable living trust (“RLT”) is the most

common type of trust. Many people have created RLTs with the help of lawyers, paralegals or even do-it-yourself kits. The typical RLT gives you unfettered control of the trust and all assets. In fact, as the name implies, the trust is revocable which means you can cancel it. For these reasons, the law will view assets in an RLT as your assets for debt collection purposes. The other type of trust is an irrevocable trust (“IRT”) which is generally created with the assistance of an attorney. This trust transfers assets permanently out of your name, meaning you have no ownership or control of the assets transferred. Your creditors are limited to seeking payment from you and your assets, and once an asset is transferred using an IRT it no longer belongs to you. Unfortunately, there are several “look back” periods so you cannot transfer your assets to an IRT once you are in financial straits as a means to dodge creditors. A couple examples will illustrate the point. Amanda has substantial financial resources, pays all her bills on time and is employed. She decides she would like to help her niece, Betty, by establishing an IRT for Betty’s benefit. She funds the trust by transferring money to the trust. Shortly thereafter, Amanda’s fortunes wane. She loses her job and depletes her savings, and in time she amasses vast debts. Her

debts arose after creation of the IRT and she has no right or access to the assets in the trust. Her creditors will have no claim to assets in the trust. Note: there can be gift taxes associated with funding an irrevocable trust. Carson owns a house but has not been able to pay his credit cards since he lost his job last year. He has bill collectors calling and is concerned he might get sued by one of his creditors. He creates an RLT and funds the trust by transferring his house and other assets to the trust. The trust will not limit the rights of his creditors to pursue Carson or his assets. Note: the exemptions laws protect many assets from creditor claims. Now back to the original question, can a person avoid bankruptcy by creating a trust to protect assets? The answer is no. Only an irrevocable trust can protect assets, and an irrevocable trust must be created prior to a person becoming unable to pay their debts when due.
