Why All The Fuss About Periodontal Gum Disease?

Most older patients want to keep their teeth longer and want to get the best that dentistry has to offer like implants and elective aesthetic procedures. There are some challenges associated with overall health conditions and dental needs as we age. all the fuss about periodontal-gum-disease? Why all the lectures at your hygiene appointments? For a very good reason. Periodontal disease is progressive - meaning if it doesn’t stabilize or show signs of healing, it is bound to get worse. Even when it doesn’t hurt, untreated gum disease will eventually take its toll resulting in tooth loss. About 80-90% of the population has some level of gingivitis or periodontitis and about 7% are being treated. Gum disease causes about 70% of all losses of permanent teeth. The course of gum disease proceeds in spurts of activity over time. In type I cases-gingivitis-we fi nd the gums infl amed or swollen. A crevice or pocket between the tooth and gum has deepened to about 4mm, indicating early detachment of the supporting structures. The bone is still in good shape. As pockets deepen to 4 to 6mm, you’re on your way to early periodontitis. Gum infl ammation extends into the bone beneath, which begins to erode in type II. In types III and IV periodontitis, we’re racing with the clock. Pockets deepen further still, and teeth begin to move and without surgical intervention the teeth could be lost. There is a bright side gum disease is treatable. Since we can treat every stage of the disease, our practice has helped patients save their teeth and bring oral tissues back to health and vitality. So depending on your periodontal health situation a 6-month or a 4- month recall visit to the dentist is recommended and always remember brushing and fl ossing everyday is still the rule.
