—2020 SCHEDULE UPDATES— THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HAS BEEN POSTPONED AND WILL BE RESCHEDULED FOR ANOTHER DATE. OUR 110TH ANNIVERSARY BANQUET HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2020 U.G.H. DAY AT THE UNION HAS BEEN CANCELED More information will be forthcoming! —WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO?— It’s been going around that in this social distancing, lockdown, quarantine, & solitary confinement, people are either going to come out fantastic chefs or….with a dependency on alcohol. Some might already be fantastic chefs and we hope none of our members come down with the other option. All jokes aside, not being able to have our usual routines has given time to us all that we didn't have before. Some folks are cooking through their favorite cookbooks, baking wonderful pretzels, cookies, cakes and more. Others are trying to stay fit, practicing mixology, catching up on reading, tv shows, movies, and documentaries they didn’t previously have time for. While I think I’d like everyone to be healthy and safe and also get back to living our lives with family and friends, events, and socialization, I think that maybe we all needed this little break to rest and remind us of what is important. (Hopefully that rest is finished soon!) We’ve got some good chores done around our house, made some good meals, baked a little and found new ways to connect without being physically together.
Its been difficult for me and those that help me to come up with content to fill these pages. You will have noticed that the Progress has been less than Monthly for some time. Here’s where you can help. The more content the better and easier! Tell us what you have been up to lately! Write an article about the things you’ve cooked or the ways you have connected. Tell your story and we will help you share it with all our friends and members. Email mfricker92@hotmail.com and we will include your content in the next issue. Michael

Quarantine has taken a toll on all of us in many different ways. For us active dancers who attend practice weekly, it has created a void in our normally scheduled Tuesday night practices. Throughout the year, the active dancers are used to seeing each other one to three times a week if not more. After six weeks of no practice, no events and minimal interaction with each other, we needed something to fill our Tuesday night practice void. On Tuesday, April 21st we started our new weekly Tuesday night quarantine get together. We started a weekly UGH Quarantine Quizzo through Zoom. Our first week was successful with 20 participants grouped into teams per household. Hosting the first week, I created four categories with 10 questions each. Our first rule of Quizzo is that the winner will host the following week. After a successful first week of Quizzo, Emma Walter came out on top and the Deely family won the second week. Our new tradition is keeping us connected and preoccupied until we are allowed to dance and practice again! Michelle Paul

They say you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. The truth is, you knew what you had, you just never thought you’d lose it. While the virus is depriving us from our usual busy schedules, there is something to be said for the amount of family time, time to pick up new hobbies, or to complete those tasks you’ve been putting off for so long. These long weeks at home away from our club family have been tough, and we never thought we’d say we’d give anything to go to practice on Tuesday night! Life must go on, though and we are all adjusting to a new kind of normal. We’ve been seeing a lot of mask making, birthday drive-bys, and reminiscing on all the good times. We’ve celebrated our “Virtual Banquet” on March 21st by posting photos and videos from the comfort of our homes, wishing we were together. We’re holding onto all the photos and memories from prior events, especially the annual Maifest at Brauhaus Schmitz which had to be canceled due to COVID19. We’ve seen a lot of baking and cooking special dishes from back home using our own Mahlzeit Cookbook and various other cookbooks from organizations we belong to. We’ve been watching some of our favorite musicians go “Live” on Facebook and other platforms and having watch parties with our friends. Hey Dino, we’re waiting on you! These past weeks at home have brought new and exciting special moments for some of our members, new and old! On April 25th, Alex, and Jenn Blank (Lineman) welcomed their first child into the world! Kurt Alexander Blank was born in Abington Hospital at 11:33 AM. Weighing 6 lbs. and 13 oz, Kurt is already so loved by many! Alex, Jenn, and Kurt are all happy and healthy and can’t wait for Kurt’s first club debut! A family drive by parade was planned by Jenn’s Uncle Tom and everyone enjoyed seeing little Kurt for the first time. Later on, in the week on April 27th, Andrew Weyershaeuser and his wife Tessa welcomed their baby girl, Lola Rose Weyershaeuser into the world. Everyone is also in good health and we wish them many congratulations on their sweet new baby girl! Luisa Martini of the Trenton Donauschwa|

ben married Glenn Scheideler on April 4th over Skype. The Coronavirus did not ruin their special day! An officiant along with the parents of Glenn were present as their witnesses in their apartment while the rest of their family watched via Skype. They will be formally celebrating with all their family and friends at a later date once it is safe to do so. We extend our congratulations as they start their married life together! Jason Karasow, current head coach of the Mens Major Team, and his wife Ashleigh recently bought a house in Flourtown, PA. We wish them a happy and healthy life in their new home! On March 7th, the Mid Atlantic Jugend Einzel Competition was held at the Lancaster Liederkranz. Our Evangeline Noel performed with her partner Collin Creveling of Enzian Volkstanzgruppe from Delaware. Evie placed 3rd in her age group!!! We are so proud of her performance and the way she represents the German Hungarians. Emma Walter, longtime cultural group member, is finishing up her senior year at Rider University. She will be completing her degree in Organizational Psychology and although her graduation ceremony is being postponed until November, we would like to congratulate her for her accomplishment! Emma served as a Resident Advisor throughout her time at Rider and she was also involved in many other clubs and associations. Emma, we are proud of you and cannot wait to see what the future holds for you! Well, COVID19 has truly changed our lives in the blink of an eye! On the day when we can finally come back together again, we will thank God for all that we have in our club and in one another. We are so lucky to have our club life; our friends, our coaches, our teammates, our dance partners, our cousins, our aunts, uncles, second mothers and fathers… I could go on and on! As Winnie the Pooh says, “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Except, we are not saying “Goodbye,” it’s “See you soon!” So, for now, keep “liking” those photos on Facebook, catch up with your friends and family on FaceTime, and brush up on those 110 banquet dance videos! The German Hungarians are here to stay, and we cannot wait until we can say, “remember when…” Karina E Fricker

—AN ADDRESS FROM THE PRESIDENT— Dear Members and Friends, First off. I want to say that I miss you all and our Club Life! It has been about two months now that we have all been quarantined and I initially thought by May things would open up and we would be on our way to what was once considered “normal”. Today, I sit back and wonder when will normal return? And what will it look like? What started as one cancellation, a postponed event, and an affair that we cannot even dream of planning, has really taken a toll on those who are extremely social. Technology has been a life saver allowing us to stay connected via phones, texts, pictures, social media and Zoom. Who would have thought that we would be embracing technology as we are today? I would like to provide an update on club events as well as other affairs that we would typically be participating in as a group. German Hungarian Events • Our Annual General Membership meeting was cancelled and will be rescheduled to a later date. • While we completely missed the Spring season of Soccer we are hoping and praying the pitch is opened and we can get out to enjoy a good game of soccer; sooner than later. I have heard that the UGH players have been participating in “Training Wars” to stay fit! • The Club 110th Gala Celebration has been rescheduled to Saturday, November 28th with a Sunday Funday Celebration and Cultural Group Reunion. If you have any questions, please contact Nichole Deely at 215-806-1998. As per Nichole we are still getting some new reservations. • The Spring Penny Party has been cancelled. • Fall Penny Party is under review and the date will be confirmed. • Our beloved Kirchweih Festival is scheduled for Saturday, November 14 and it will take place. We are looking at modifications to accommodate a safe social distancing plan. • While there were some new events, we were going to add this year obviously those are on hold. www.ughclub.us
