he Queally Miata Race Challenge series is back, along with the fun-filled competition and camaraderie for which
it has become known. Founded by MMC Co-Founder and Partner Paul Queally, the series has grown by leaps and bounds since its debut three years ago, and boasted nearly 30 registrants for the first race of the 2015 season. Drivers of all levels have gotten into the series’ playful spirit, laughing and ribbing each other, and embracing their light-hearted nicknames like badges of honor. “There are no knuckleheads here, like you might find in a more serious race,” Paul, known as The King, said. “This series represents everything we wanted MMC to be; it’s the most fun you’ll have on a track.” Despite its growth, the race series has maintained its low-key, laid back vibe. It only takes up half a day, and exclusively utilizes the Mazda Miata. The small but tough race-modified cars are fun to drive, and much more affordable than nearly any other vehicle on MMC’s property. “If you bang up one of these cars, you can get a part at a junkyard,” Paul said. “That certainly isn’t the case with a car that may have cost you a few hundred thousand dollars.”

FAST CARS +
FRIENDSHIP G
eoff L., a strategy consultant for Life Science organizations, and his New York City buddies share an interest in motorsports. However, with hectic schedules and limited public track days, the crew could only get together to drive a few times a year – if that.
That changed in 2013. This Wolf Pack – complete with dynamic personalities and at least one personalized license plate – found a home at Monticello Motor Club. They all joined MMC, and found the perfect fit for fast cars and friendship. Start your engines, and let the razzing, backslapping, and name-calling begin…
MMC: We hear that you have nicknames for each other. Care to share? Geoff: We’ve got a few, absolutely. I used to be the Awesome Aussie since I grew up in Australia, but I think they changed it on me recently. Sensei. That’s what they’re calling me. I can get pretty centered from the moment I arrive at the track and suit up, so maybe that’s it. MMC: Which do you prefer, your solo visits or your group visits? Geoff: That’s a tough one. We all get along famously as a group of friends, and have a lot of fun when we’re on site together. Since each of us has different levels of experience, we’re often divided across run groups. We watch one another – lead-follow for those in a group with others – and then share our “words of wisdom” in the pits or in the lounge. It helps us all improve. It’s a different experience when I come by myself. All of the noise and tension of the work day is behind me. The Club has everything I need; I don’t have to worry about fueling, finding an air pump, or even finding a place to eat (by the way, Chef John is amazing). This makes for an almost Zen experience for me. It’s about tuning out the outside world and the small things, and focusing completely on my technique. MMC: You learned to drive on a public course. How does that compare with MMC? Geoff: Most amateur instructors at public courses are great drivers, but the driver ratings are subjective and can be inconsistent. You see widely varied skill levels on a track at any time, and that can be dangerous and unpredictable. At the Club, there’s so much track access throughout the season, and much more track time throughout each day. There is no pressure to rush to use every minute of available track time. The instructors are not only real pros, but they are the same set of instructors throughout the season. They have a better baseline to more consistently rate drivers so that everyone is placed in an appropriate run group. The bonus is that these same instructors are available for coaching so you can constantly improve your technique. There are also fewer people on the track at any given time, which makes the whole environment safer. The real bonus has been the experience. There’s always great food, great company, and great facilities. All of these things contribute to a better driving experience. MMC: What’s up next for you and your friends? Geoff: I’m realistic. I have no aspirations of becoming a Formula One driver. I’d probably rate my automotive geekiness at a three or four out of 10. Last season, though, there was talk of “we should do an MMC club race.” Those bold statements usually translate to challenges and, ultimately, reality. I guess at that point my automotive geekiness level would probably move to a solid seven.

“There are no judgments at MMC about how fast you’re going, or how good your times are,” Bob said. “The atmosphere is so supportive, and the MMC team – from the top down – makes it a fantastic experience every time.” Bob’s wife Veronica and the couple’s two daughters, Emily and Sara, thought MMC would be the perfect venue to host Bob’s 70th birthday celebration. His family rented out the entire MMC property, and Bob played host to more than 120 people who came to share his milestone. He brought out his whole fleet of cars for his guests to enjoy, and instructors took party-goers onto the track for hot laps. “The entire experience was something I will never, ever forget,” said Bob. “I fell in love with MMC at first sight, and the Club has been like a second home ever since.”

Competition
takes flight
in race to Club Championship
T
he Performance Flight Challenge, Monticello Motor Club’s premier 5-race club championship series, is deeply entrenched as an MMC tradition, one that more and more
members take part in every year. Like signature competitions at exclusive country clubs around the globe, the title of Club Champion is the crown jewel at MMC; it carries weight and elicits respect. “It’s a friendly race, but competitive too,” said MMC member Lewis Liebert, race sponsor and owner of Performance Flight, an aviation company which offers flight training, jet charters, and aircraft management. “It can be a gentle way of easing into competitive racing.” Unlike MMC’s Queally Miata Race Challenge, the Performance Flight series requires that participants have a valid competition racing license, or have completed one of the Club’s two-day racing programs. Both cars and drivers must be outfitted with extensive safety equipment. The battle for the Club title is divided into multiple race groups. It is further sub-divided into different classes, largely based on individual vehicle modifications, power-to-weight ratio, and aero profiles. Members accumulate points during each race based on their finishing position. The member with the most overall points at the end of the series is named Club Champion. Lewis took the title in 2012. Fellow member Anthony G. won the title the year before. Neither joined MMC with racing experience. “I learned the hard way that I wasn’t really good at all when I first joined up; it was humbling, really,” Lewis said. “It took time – and a lot of help from MMC pro instructors – for me to really learn V O L UM E 3 | M O T O R C L U B MAGAZINE 3 8

ronze member John O. comes to Monticello Motor Club alone, and often laps for five hours over the course of the day. The track
is a constant enigma, the array of fleet cars an endless well of new challenges. He has worked hard at the craft of driving since joining up some four years ago. He has worked with MMC’s private instructors and attended several of MMC’s driving programs, including both its Intro and Advanced Racing Schools, its Radical Experience, and its Praga Academy. And still, the track – with its technical corners and long straights – continues to fascinate him.
