Topp Angus 2019 Genetic Base

Welcome

TO TOPP ANGUS

At Topp Angus we have many goals within our ranch and breeding program but number one has always and will always be to breed the most balanced cattle possible. This is done through careful research, planning, and constant attention to detail to guarantee nothing is overlooked. We believe by breeding balanced cattle we are able to drive our program forward, produce an animal that will be profitable to our customer, and ensure everyone’s lifelong sustainability. Topp Angus has three main areas of focus; genetic improvement, customer profitability and sustainability.

GENETIC IMPROVEMENT

Let me be the first to say: Topp Angus is not the best Angus herd in the United States on any one single trait and we will never strive to be. If you are looking for the lowest birth genetics available in the marketplace, we are not it. While we appreciate low/moderate birth weights since we calve out on pasture, we will not sacrifice other traits and growth potential to chase low birth weights. We expect our cows and heifers to be able to have a live calf unassisted, with the calf up and nursing shortly thereafter but will never get caught up in chasing the lowest birth weights. If you are looking for strictly carcass traits in your cattle, again we are not the place for you. We understand that the end product is the ultimate goal and we must keep that in mind. We will forever be looking to improve our carcass traits and will not lose sight of that, however there are so many traits that cannot be sacrificed up to that point so they must all go hand in hand. If you are looking for strictly growth, again we are not your program. We maintain that if you want the most pounds per cow exposed in the spring, the genetics need to be balanced for live births, efficiency, health, and growth. We are very proud of the fact that our cattle can be at the top of multiple real world performance tests but rather than focus on strictly being the highest growth cattle in the market we focus on balancing high performing progeny with a cowherd that is proficient in growth, efficiency, and live calves. Maternal traits are also a main focus here but when it comes to pure milk production, we will not focus on having the highest milk producing Angus around. We believe that a mother cow has to be able to produce adequate milk supply to produce a healthy fat calf in the fall. She must also be able to maintain condition and breed back. We ask a lot of her and it doesn’t begin and end with milk production. We insist on maintaining a cowherd that has enough milk to produce that fat healthy calf, but also insist on strong udder attachments for longevity, proper teat size and spacing for problem free initial nursing and long-term udder quality. The list goes on and on, but if you are looking for a single trait, there are other herds that are no doubt doing it better. We breed for balance to be near the top of whichever trait you are looking and are constantly looking for ways to improve the animal as a whole.

PROVIDING VALUE

Here at Topp Angus we understand that the purchase price of a bull does not simply dictate if that bull is going to put you in the black that year or not. Along with the price of that bull customer profitability hinges on that bulls influence on number of live calves born, calf vigor, calf performance and selling price. And this is just the immediate effects of your bull purchase. We also understand the long-term effects your bull purchase has on your cowherd as far as heifer development costs, conception rates, cow production, and cow longevity. Knowing that so much of our customer’s success depends upon the genetics they purchase we place our customers profitability at the forefront of all our genetic and management decisions.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability can be viewed many different ways and as with everything else, we try to be balanced in our goals. Outstanding pure profit is a nice concept and one that our banker would surely appreciate, but that is not what our business can be based on. Our sustainability depends upon your, the customer’s, profitability. We look to develop a program that keeps you profitable and coming back, we look to provide an atmosphere that is great for raising a family, we look to be great stewards of our land and environment, and most importantly we value the friendships and relationships that can be developed in this business that at the end of the day makes all the time and effort way more than worth it.

TOPP ANGUS

Cow Families

The key to any successful breeding program is the

development of a reliable, consistently productive cowherd. Topp Angus had the great fortune of being able to purchase as our genetic base a tremendous set of cows from the heart of one of the greatest and most time proven cowherds in the country – TC Ranch from Franklin Nebraska. We have taken what we view to be an elite set of cows and are constantly looking to improve upon that. We believe that every great family begins with a great mother. We believe very firmly that if you can maintain and improve upon a core group of superior cow families, that as a group, the whole herd will become more and more consistent. We will continue on with only the most productive and consistent families at the ranch and will add to their stories‌

Herd Sires

Topp Angus believes very strongly in developing a breeding program with predictability. We will not take a shotgun approach to AI season, but choose instead to thoroughly research which genetics to bring in as herd sires that will push our program forward. We feel very confident in the sires we are using and expect them to excel in all important traits through their progeny.

HERD SIRES Focus In was brought in as the initial walking sire when we bought the original TC fall herd. He was our introduction to a new way of viewing what a calving ease sire can be; massive. This bull was big-topped, big quartered, massive ribbed, with lots of bone, and a large, sound foot. The pure mass of this bull made calving ease look improbable. However with his short gestation and moderate birth weights we were able to consistently use him on heifers without issue. With our foundation herd calving mainly in the fall on grass problem-free calving is something that we cannot ignore. Calves need to be born unassisted with excellent vigor. We look for moderate birth, growing into mass and power with all of our herd bulls. This is exactly what Focus In was able to offer to the foundation herd as good as anyone could ever ask for.

Wolf Creek came to us as the genetic gem of the 2012 Mohnen Angus Sale out of White Lake, South Dakota. After touring the Dave and Yvonne Hinman herd in Malta, Montana and witnessing firsthand the base of cows that HA Image Maker provided I was set on owning a son. Soon after I met with and toured the Mohnen Angus operation and set my sights on Wolf Creek. Combining the maternal predictability of Image Maker and the herd bull producing capabilities of Jilt 1283 it was a surefire guarantee that Wolf Creek could provide us with the genetic consistency we were seeking. Wolf Creek has gone on to sire some of the finest producing young females in the Topp Angus program. They are the exact functional females that we all desire – they out produce themselves and never miss.

HERD SIRES The Donald came to us in our pursuit of a bull that can balance the genomic and EPD profile that we desire with the absolute structural integrity that the industry needs. The Donald quickly became a ranch favorite at Topp Angus. Whether it is his ability to sire performance in the form of extreme length, depth of body, and stoutness all in a moderate frame size or his quiet demeanor that he breeds into every one of his calves it is difficult to determine which part of him we love more. With their flawless udders and broodiness his daughters have yet to disappoint. We look for the Donald daughters to have a lasting impact on our cowherd for many generations to come.

HERD SIRES Hancock was the first natural calf raised by TA Marcia 0616 who went on to become one of our top donors in our program. She produced broody, heavy milking females and stout, wide based sons. Hancock has proven to be a reliable calving ease sire. His calves were born unassisted with lots of vigor. He produced sound, feminine daughters with flawless udders and well balanced, free moving sons.

proven genetics

Topp Angus bulls stem from some of the most proven cow families in the Angus breed. Our bulls have the genetic backing to not only have an immediate impact on your calf crop but a lasting impact on your cowherd.

consistency

The foundation of our cowherd is built on consistency. We have a strong breeding base and elite genetics to strengthen our annual offering to you. We do not believe in keeping 50% of our bulls and heifers, we believe in having a cowherd that never misses. This is why we will not chase the latest fads to achieve better marketing but continue with balanced genetics that we can guarantee will improve your herd for many generations to come.

BALANCE

An economical cowherd is comprised of cows that can be fed efficiently, with optimal udder quality, feet, production, disposition, and fertility. Our females are bred to reach all points of efficiency to offer as much performance as possible while keeping all else balanced.

numbers

We genomic test all of our bulls at Topp Angus. We feel it is important to be aware of the numbers but do not feel that this single piece of data should be what makes breeding decisions. The data is very useful and should not be ignored but at no point should the numbers override your evaluation of the live animal and the raw performance data

age

We offer two different age groups of bulls for sale. We have our January/February born bulls and also our August/September, 18 month old, bulls. This gives you the customer the option to choose the age that best fits into your program.

We sincerely appreciate your business and will continue to make the genetic progress to earn it. Please let us know if you would like to discuss more about the Topp Angus program.
