Sekure Merchant Solutions donates $10 000 to the West Island Mission

S

ekure Merchant Solutions, a local call centre with two locations in Montreal, recently donated $10 000 to the West Island Mission. This donation will be used to provide food and other necessities to the families that the West Island Mission cares for each week.

By Jillian Clark mtltimes.ca

This type of act of kindness is not unusual of the local business. The owners themselves are the motivation behind the company’s employee donation. “The owners of our company discovered the West Island Mission in the spring of last year,” said Nastassia Steavu from Sekure Merchant Solutions. “They saw an article about the Mission, and they were very interested.” The article explained the Mission’s bare shelves at a time that many people do not think to donate. West Island Mission typically receives hearty donations around the winter holiday season, but donations dip in the spring and summer. After reading the Mission’s plea, the owners of Sekure jumped at the chance to help. They organized a small donation initiative amongst their employees in the spring. “At our office, we gathered thirty boxes of food—canned goods, even clothes and games. We put it all together, and we dropped it off at the Mission,” said Steavu. WEDNESDAY

ne of the best parties of the year, every year, took place last Saturday night, November 12, at the Marriott In-Terminal Hotel in Dorval. More than 300 guests were welcomed by a team of Brazilian dancers adorning feather headdresses and beaded costumes in support of the Lakeshore General Hospital Foundation (LGHF). The cocktail reception started the evening off with delicious tastes that continued throughout the soiree. The community driven patrons joined forces to the tune of $600 a ticket to support their community hospital, now serving five times the population than it did when the hospital opened in 1960. Together they helped raise $502,200 for improved health care in the region. Craig Read, a patient of the Lakeshore General Hospital, spoke to a crowded room about his life-saving experience at the hands of the doctors and nurses at the hospital.

"I remember pleading to breathe," he said to the silent ballroom. "The head nurse was screaming at me to keep fighting. It was not luck that kept me alive it was talent." Forty-year-old Read considers October 12, the day he was saved from a pulmonary embolism, his second birthday. "I was born at the Lakeshore, I died at the Lakeshore, and I was saved at the Lakeshore," he explained. "Doctors spend their entire lives learning their craft. Their craft is to save lives and prolong life." Member of the National Assembly, Martin Coiteux, echoed Read's support of the LGHF. "It is important that we come out to events like this to help support the work that the Foundation is doing," Coiteux stated. "The enthusiasm of this room filled with a community is why the financial objectives have been met tonight." LGHF board member and Kirkland City Councillor Tony Di Gennaro was more than pleased with the results of the event. "Chances are pretty good that if you get sick, you will end up at the Lakeshore Hospital," he said, "We need to put our efforts into the service to our residents. You will notice there are a lot of doctors here tonight. They are dedicated

to providing top quality service to our community." LGHF has set a goal of $4.6 million dollars for 2016-2017. The money raised will help improve the level of critical, cardiac, geriatric, and mental health care West Islanders receive, close to home.

Les Canadiennes to play at the Bell Centre

or the first time in the organization's history, Les Canadiennes de Montreal will play a regular season game at the Bell Centre, on December 10, against the Calgary Inferno. The matinee game will mark the first time the two teams will meet since facing off against each other in the 2016 Clarkson Cup championship at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa last March. Les Canadiennes boast five Olympians in their ranks, including captain Marie-Philip Poulin, Caroline Ouellette, Charline LabontĂŠ, Lauriane Rougeau, and Julie Chu. Eight Olympians, including two-time Olympic gold medalist, Meaghan Mikkelson, will suit up for the Inferno. "We're very excited to be able to host Les Canadiennes for the first time in the home of the Montreal Canadiens," said Canadiens owner, president and CEO, Geoff Molson. "We look forward to giving fans a chance to see some of the best female hockey players in the world live in our building. This is another example of our organizations working together towards our common goal of growing the game at both the professional and grassroots levels in Quebec." www.mtltimes.ca

The Canadiens announced a partnership agreement with Les Canadiennes in September 2015 that includes providing both promotional and financial support to the Montreal-based CWHL franchise. In addition to hosting regular skills clinics throughout the year, the Canadiens also launched the team's inaugural all-girls hockey camp at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard in August. "The season is a landmark for the CWHL as we celebrate our 10th anniversary," said CWHL commissioner, Brenda Andress. "We are thrilled to partner with the Montreal Canadiens to bring Les Canadiennes and their heritage celebrations to one of the world's biggest hockey stages as there is no better place in Quebec to celebrate both the women's game and the incredible legacy of the Montreal team and its players over the past decade." Puck drop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on December 10. Tickets will be sold for $15 each and will be available for purchase as of Friday, November 11, at 1 p.m. on canadiens.com .

Flock to Florida this winter Sunset Naples Pier

ith the weather starting to add a bit of a chill in the air, and the sun starting to set earlier, these are sure signs that winter is making its slow but steady arrival. And whether you are a Canadian snowbird or someone who would like a brief break from the cold and snow of a Canadian winter, the Sunshine State itself, Florida, is making its clarion call to those Canadian tourists who are craving that winter escape. And there are many Canadians who are heeding that call. In fact, they are doing it in droves. Last year, out of the 106.6 million international visitors who made Florida their vacation destination, about 3.8 million of them were from Canada, helping to contribute towards a massive tourism industry in Florida that is worth over $89 billion. And there are many obvious reasons why they flock to Florida every year; there are the many sites and attractions, the easygoing way of life, the different regions and areas that have their own unique imprint, and of course, the multitude of sandy beaches, blue oceans, and plenty of warmth and sunshine. Last month, the Florida visitors bureau – Visit Florida – hosted a special “Flock to Florida” breakfast at the W Hotel in downtown Montreal, where representatives from seven Florida regions told a group of local travel writers what the Sunshine State has to offer Canadian visitors this winter, as they make their annual winter migration south. Dubbed as the “River City by the Sea” and the largest city in the continental U.S., Jacksonville (www.visitjacksonville.com), offers visitors plenty of outdoor and natural wonders, which includes waterways, parks, ecological preserves, not to mention 22 miles of white sandy beaches and 85,000 acres of parks, and plenty of activities such as kayaking, kiteboarding, surfing and paddleboarding. There’s also the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens (which has over 3000 rare and exotic animal and plant species), and the Fort Caroline National Memorial, which is renowned as “Florida’s Atlantis”.

www.mtltimes.ca

And craft beer fans have something to enjoy in Jacksonville. The Jax Ale Trail gives visitors the opportunity to delve into their own brewery tour, as they can visit and sample the wares at the eight craft breweries that dot the Jacksonville landscape, such as the Aardwolf Brewing Company, the Engine 16 Brewing Co., and the Pinglehead Brewing Company. Visitors are encouraged to pick up a special passport, and get it stamped with every purchase made at any of the breweries along the Jax Ale Trail, which can be exchanged for a selection of free Jacksonville swag such as t-shirts and beer koozies. Florida’s piece of paradise is its Paradise Coast, which is located on the southwest coast of the state, and encompasses its Gulf Coast area, including the cities of Naples, Marco Island and Everglades City. This part of Florida is perfect for those who enjoy nature at its most picturesque, with plenty of beaches, resorts, islands, bays, and its unique natural wilderness. Highlights include the Naples Botanical Garden, Marco Island’s Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge and Collier-Seminole State Park, and the Gulf Coast side of Everglades National Park, which includes the Big Cypress Swamp ecosystem and tours by boat, canoe or kayak to the Ten Thousand Islands.

If you enjoy island-hopping, then discover Florida’s beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel (www.fortmyers-Sanibel.com). The beauty of this region is its 100 coastal islands, and its mainly unspoiled beaches, tropical wildlife and subtropical foliage that offer the perfect setting for those vacationers who want to experience a pristine, serene escape into a tropical heaven. Highlights include Estero Island, which has been deemed as one of the “world’s safest beaches”; Periwinkle Way on Sanibel Island, which offers lush foliage, shops and restaurants, and buildings that are no taller than the tallest palm tree; Captiva Island, known for its natural beauty, and was the place where Anne Morrow Lindbergh wrote her best selling book “Gift from the Sea”; and Gasparilla Island, which includes the beach town of Boca Grande, which was recognized by Travel & Leisure magazine as one of the 50 best romantic getaways. And for baseball fans (especially those baseball-starved Montreal Expos fans), Fort Myers is the spring training home for the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox, and plenty of Canadian tourists flock to the team’s Grapefruit League stadiums, especially when the Blue Jays come to visit. And with newly-introduced nonstop flight service from Montreal to Fort Myers, it should be a new stop for Montreal visitors as part of their spring training vacation plans. 26 WEDNESDAY
