Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste / MMF: 'Montreal's Budget Should be in French Only' By: Bonnie Wurst / mtltimes.ca

The Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste (SSJB) and Mouvement Montréal Français (MMF), said that Montreal's budget, presented in both English and French, should have been in French only. In fact, they believe Montreal's new mayor speaks too much English. Maxime Laporte, the SSJB's president, said in a press release, “You would think this is the Parliament in Ottawa, rather than the city hall of Montreal, the metropolis of Quebec.” Sophie Stanké, spokesperson for MMF, stated, "In light of the evidence of the constant decline of French, Valérie Plante should realize that it is her responsibility as mayor to send a (clear) message about the status of French in Montreal, the main place of welcome and integration of newcomers in Quebec.” They both believe Montreal violated the first ar-

ticle in its charter with the bilingual budget documents, pointing out that Montreal is a French city and elected officials have 'the obligation to insist on French as the city’s common language, and convince new arrivals to adopt the language'. Budgets by the city have generally been presented in both English and French, but the two Montreal-based Nationalist groups clearly feel quite differently. The comments are sure to stir up just as much controversy as the budget itself has, as most Montrealers see the city as being bilingual. In fact, a recent study from Statistics Canada showed that Montreal is Canada's most trilingual city - with more than 21% per cent of the population speaking at least three languages.

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

The Queen of Canadian Rock chats with the Mtl Times By: John Rizopoulos / mtltimes.ca

The Queen of Canadian rock and four time Juno Award winner, is currently on tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her album Racine, The Times had a chance to speak with Sass Jordan and she shared with us her humour, and kick ass attitude! Prior to releasing her first album as a singer, Jordan was a backup vocalist for The Box. She also was a songwriter for other artists, most notably writing

Michael Breen's hit single "Rain". She released her debut album, Tell Somebody, in 1988, and had hit singles in Canada with "Double Trouble" and "Stranger Than Paradise".” In 1989, her cover of the rhythm & blues song "Rescue Me" was featured on the soundtrack to the film American Boyfriends.

She followed up in 1992 with Racine, and had further hits with "Make You a Believer”, “I Want to Believe", "You Don't Have to Remind Me" and "Goin’ Back Again" In the same year, Jordan performed a duet with Joe Cocker for the soundtrack of the motion picture The Bodyguard. Racine revisited is a collection of songs from her 1992 album that is highlighted on this current tour. It’s all about Music Therapy and for Sass going back to her roots.

we also have to make money. We did play at the Maples Inn in Point Claire. What part of the city did you grow up? Near Sherbrooke and Claremont. Would you live back in Montreal again? Never say never! Shit happens along the way and everything might change, but to be honest I would love to live in the Cayman Islands. I read that Tears for Fears, Ozzy, Foreigner iron Maiden have been your influence any song that stands out from them? Yes, but my favourite is Craig Allman Southern Blood. It’s haunting and glorious produced by Don Waz who I have collaborated with. Don Waz has a song on My Damn Channel – How Do I Get It Right. Also check out Colin Lynde, Old Church from Nashville.

What is your favourite song from Racine and why? That is a very difficult question as all the songs I wrote are my babies. One that really stands out is “Make You A Believer” It was a catalyst for the rest of the record, back in the days when we had to make an album. Nowadays it’s so different. All the songs were part of a whole. It was a root feeling hence its title. Racine.

You were one of the judges on Canadian Idol. Why did it just end? Idol cost lots of money to produce and lasted 6 seasons which was a terrific run for CTV. They also had to spend lots of money to be associated with the American version and use their name. It was best to go out on a high note.
