Kirkland's Initiative for Future Light Rail (REM) Station

ith the REM Light-Rail project being given the green light a few weeks ago, many people are starting to wonder what the whole infrastructure will really look like - and how it will impact the areas where they live. So far only artist renditions have been available to spark the collective imagination. Now that the reality of the massive project grows closer, some are realizing the impact could be great and being proactive in assuring the best decisions are made towards maintaining, or even enhancing, their quality of life. One such initiative comes from an on-island suburb of Montreal that has been forward-thinking. Last year the Town of Kirkland held two consultation evenings concerning the future REM light-rail station. The goal at the first meeting held in May of 2017 was to inform citizens and businesses about the project and answer any questions they had. At the second meeting held in June, citizens were able to voice their thoughts and ideas towards developing 'a vision for the site adjacent to the future REM station in

www.mtltimes.ca

Kirkland'. Choosing the site best suited for the new station, and the five kilometres of rail coming with it, was a challenge. The initial site brought up concerns such as the potential traffic congestion around St. Charles Blvd. and the location simply not being

restaurants, shopping, entertainment and even some residences. First, a new urban boulevard has to be built in order to access the station - and with the announcement that the REM project will break ground in April, Kirkland should soon be breaking ground as well. The project is also expected to include a new overpass at Highway 40. There is certain to be some hurdles along the way, with one already in play. The plan includes the development of 185 hectares of land in Pierrefonds West - and it has been strongly opposed by By Bonnie Wurst a group of environmentalists, concerned about a mtltimes.ca large area of natural green space they claim would be able to accommodate the destroyed. And that still station. It was deemed needs to be addressed. History never gets old: For decades the Varvaro family has had restaurants and nightclubs running through their veins, they eat, sleep and breathe the

culinary and entertainment world in and outside of Montreal. Ile Perrot’s Smoke Meat Pete comes from a long line of Varvaro men in the business, his grandfather the late Dominic Varvaro, took over the once famous El Morocco supper nightclub, located at 1445, rue Lambert-Closse. Pete’s Aunt Anna remembers the likes of Joan Rivers, Jackie Mason and Eartha Kitt making appearances, along with many more international stars. She remembers her father took it over and had it going until 1962 or 63. Back then it was all the fashion to attend cabaret clubs. The staff wore black and red, Aunt Anna remembers bits and

pieces of those days, she is so proud of her family’s hard work, when you own a business you end up working 7 days a week, she said. "The El had the prettiest chorus line, the funniest comics, the thickest steaks and the strongest drinks", Al Palmer (Montreal Journalist), once wrote. Imagine that, strongest drinks which probably means; they didn’t water them down, those were the days. Pete, his brothers and sister may have not been old enough or even born yet when El Morocco was

making its big splash in Montreal, but they were involved in the next chapter of a family business. Working side by side with their father; Peter Varvaro at his restaurant The Main, located on St. Lawrence Street. Not only famous for his food

but he had a wide variety of costumers, including Al Pacino, Celine Dion and Mordecai Richler. Smoke Meat Pete 514-425-6068 283 1st. Ave in L’ile Perrot For more info give them a call or visit their website: www.smokemeatpete.com

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

Canadian Rent Prices on the Rise - Mtl ranks 4th

I

f you've been looking for a new apartment or condo to rent in Montreal recently, you might have encountered prices which made you blink - not because they were lower than anticipated, but rather because they were higher than imagined. Perhaps looking outside the city core, away from

the trendier, popular areas might be more in line with your budget. Although Montreal retains its ranking as having the fourth most expensive rental prices, on average it has gone up over 13% over the past year - according to a recent 'Canadian National Rent Report' released by PadMapper.

Why not use face masks against the Flu?

I

t may not be aesthetically pleasing at first, but if wearing a facemask means greatly lowering your chances of contracting a virus, it just may become a welcome fashion statement. Not only that, but it could also save our health system millions of dollars, as well

as lost time at work costing both employers and employees money. This season has been a particularly nasty one for the influenza virus, with the dominant strain H3N2 hitting thousands of Canadians hard, particularly children and the elderly. In fact, according

an immunity against the particularly active strains of the year - everyone is just as susceptible to them. Which brings us back to the idea of wear-

Montreal, more often within the public transit system. Perhaps these brave citizens have gotten their cue from some countries in Asia. It is very common in Japan to to see people wearing masks to prevent contracting or spreading of the flu, common cold or other viruses - passed on through breathing, saliva, coughing and sneezing. It makes complete sense to cover one's mouth and nose, but here the knee-jerk reaction is negative and although sporting a mask might not ever be fashionable, it just may become an intelligent and perhaps trendy necessity. Maybe it is time to rethink that. If we could get

past the egocentric reaction, we might also find ourselves getting past the long hours spent waiting in clinics and hospital emergency rooms - and more importantly, lying in bed for days, even weeks with fever and boxes of kleenex nearby. Wearing face masks when ill or during the flu season could prove to be one the most intelligent, simple and cost effective ways to keep us from getting sick and repeating the cycle over and over again - a cycle becoming more and more challenging to beat. Would you consider wearing a mask in public if it meant being healthier?

to the Public Health Agency of Canada, as of the first week in February there have been close to 30,000 laboratory-confirmed cases of the flu in the country with more than 3,100 hospitalizations and 130 deaths. The controversial flu vaccine has proven to be largely ineffective this season - being only 17% effective against a mutated H3N2 strain and only 55% per cent effective in the B/Yamagata strain. Whether one chooses to take the flu vaccine or not, unless they have built

ing face masks, offering a protection that is simple and effective, not only against flu viruses but even the common cold. Unfortunately in our ego driven society, there is a stigma about wearing masks in public. Seeing someone wearing one on the streets or at work, often makes one pause and perhaps move as far away as possible from them wondering whether they are dealing with a potentially fatal, contagious disease. But what if they were actually just protecting themselves and others from diseases? There has been an increase this season of people seen wearing the blue or yellow face masks in

The art of skin art – aka tattooing – is rooted in cultures and traditions that go back to ancient times. It’s more than just marking one’s body with colorful illustrations. Many tattoo artists these days combine traditional and modern methods, mostly

as a means of reconnecting with their respective heritage of their ancestors of telling traditional stories through these illustrations. The APTN network is currently airing a 13-part series called “Skindigenous”, which will explore the tattooing traditions of various indigenous peoples from around the world, from Samoa, to the Philippines, to New Zealand and Australia, to Hawaii, to Indonesia, as well as British Columbia, Alberta, Toronto and Newfoundland. Each episode examines the tools and methods of these unique tattoo artists, and how their sense of culture, tradition and respect for their ancestors influences their art. fter winning four consecutive gold medals since the 2002 Winter Olympics, and as disappointing as it is to lose to their longtime rivals on the USA women's team Canada's Women Hockey Team is bringing home the Silver Medal. Marie-Philip Poulin gave Canada a 2-1 lead near the end of the second period of the final match, but the US put on a lot of pressure early in third period and tied the game at 2-2, eventually sending the game into overtime. Canada had a power play for the last 1:35 minutes of overtime, with US defense player Megan Keller in the penalty box for an illegal hit on Poulin, but Canada just couldn't get the puck into the nets and secure the win. After 20 minutes of scoreless fouron-four play, the game

went to a shootout. It was the first Olympic women’s hockey final to go to a shootout, which lasted an excruciating six rounds. USA goaltender Maddie Rooney held back Canada's Meghan Agosta during the last round, giving the USA a final 3-2

win. Women’s ice hockey made its debut at Nagano 1998 and the Canadian

and US hockey teams were meeting in the gold medal game match for a third straight Olympic Games - with Canada winning the Gold Medal each time. But in IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) World Women's Championships, Canada has lost seven out of the last eight games in the finals to the USA - explaining their strong rivalry. It was a gut-wrenching and hard loss for Canada and tears fell as they received their Silver Medals - but they did win Silver and that in itself makes them champions. Relief For Pain - 3 Osteopathic secrets to relieving neck muscle spasms and reducing neck Pain I

f your neck feels tense or painful, your neck muscles may be locked up in a spasm. A neck muscle spasm occurs when the cervical muscles are over stimulated. Essentially, they won't turn off. A spasm can occur when a muscle is held in the same position for a long time. Or a muscle can be made to do repetitive movements. So, it is being trained to work extra hard at one activity. The neck may be affected by the shoulder and upper back muscles, so it is best to treat all of the upper-body muscles if you want to take strain off the neck. Natural treatment secrets based in osteopathy There are natural remedies that most doctors and health practitioners don't practice. But they can help you get instant relief, stop the muscle from its spasm, and prevent your neck from future spasms. They originate in osteopathic medicine schools. However, the training in these techniques is minimal, and the

application is becoming a lost art. Who is practicing these simple, natural techniques in the wellness and medical professions? (Answer: Hardly anyone!) * Positional Release- With the following positional release techniques, you will deactivate the muscle in spasm. It can be done with one of two ways: Muscle Shortening- Identify the muscle which is in spasm. Then find its end points, where the muscle attaches to the bone. You will want to put the muscle on slack by bringing the two ends closer to each other. With your fingertips, press the muscle in toward itself from the ends. This signals the neuromuscular system to turn off the muscle. This is a tricky skill with neck muscles because it is more difficult to find the ends of the muscles. Repositioning- Another way to put the muscle on slack and send those deactivation signals is by gently moving other structures around the locked-up muscle. If you have a nasty 'crick in the neck', for example, one end of the af-

fected muscle attaches to the shoulder blade. So, you can gently press the shoulder blade upward, toward the neck, to put it on slack. Strain, Counter-Strain- This is the third technique that most health practitioners could be using to relieve spasms. When your neck is in spasm, you will apply a slight, gentle resistance force in the opposite direction of the spasm, and then stretch the muscle in the direction that it was originally tight. It will stretch farther and loosen up. If you practice these, you will eventually be able to use them very quickly to stop spasms. When you are proficient at them, you can also help others to relieve their pain and tension. For more information call at: 514- 244-0799 Total Pain Management, Pierrefonds 17555 Boul. ebruary, you are not always a sunny month here in the north. We need the sun on our

skin. Let’s join the airport lineups to sunny destinations and be a chameleon. Lose the mittens, scarves and winter boots. Stuff them into the luggage side pockets … quickly, before your luggage is whisked to the bowels of the plane. Don the sunglasses, the sandals and the Hawaiian shirt. Inventory for the hundredth time the passports, the camera and scuba fins jutting from carry-ons. Adjust the sunhat. Revel in the buzz about the resort destination, weather reports. Dream of the margarita and pina colada’s and island music. The golf, the tours, the zen. Is it Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican, St Martens, Costa? Any

place where the sun shines to heal our souls is good for us. If you are fortunate to have lots of melanin in your skin to help protect you from the strong rays, then you should not be overly worried (but don’t be foolish) about sunburn. If your skin is lily white, BEWARE. Most of us have experienced sunburn. Not a pleasant experience. By now, most of us know our limitations. Your children do not, so it is up to you to teach them. A loyal customer called me last week, excited about her trip to Bermuda. Please tell me what I should bring with me in skin care because I do NOT want to use the chemical products on the market. "Use the zinc oxide when you are in the sun. Every morning apply emu or argan oil (mixed with tamanu is even better). The butters ( Sheamu and Shargan) are wonderful and can be applied anytime, but are especially

nourishing after a cleansing bath or shower. I also suggested our revitalizing eye oil blend. People LOVE it all over the face, not just around the eyes. And the SPF of these products is good. Moisturizing and protecting." Do not travel anywhere without the neem salve and or the neembodybar. Essential in case it is the season for nosee-ums, bug bites, etc. We are not permitted to list any SPF factors but our customers look them up. They tell us that tamanu is an 18, emu is an 8, carrot is near 40. OILS do contain SPF factors and can help against extreme weathers. And of course, good old ZINC, the block. memoir Unsinkable, you can plainly see the rather grotesque scar of the injury she sustained on her left leg during a accident in Essen, Germany just weeks before she was to compete in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. However, when you see the look on her face in that photograph, you can plainly see that her leg wasn’t the only place where she had some painful scars to bear. For man years, Laumann hid the painful psychological scars that were created

through a rather difficult upbringing, and resulted in a painful bout of depression and a shattered sense of self-esteeem. When you read Unsinkable, and see how she managed to bring herself up and rise to the occasion to conquer this depression, you will realize that it was just as a heroic battle as her 27day uphill battle to recover from that leg injury that could have ended her rowing career, and end up racing valiantly towards a bronze medal in Barcelona. The first quarter of the book is dedicated to that accident in Essen during a rowing world championship tournament, and Laumann’s painful, yet successful, struggle towards conquering such a horrific injury and ending up on the medal podium, which instantly made her a hero across Canada. She recounts that battle through a great deal of detail, especially the enormous physical and psychological rehabilitation she underwent in order to make her way back to her single scull boat in such an incredible short period that no mortal human being

could ever endeavour, let alone accomplish. This is truly the definition of someone who played through pain … and succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. After winning her bronze medal, Laumann married her longtime boyfriend John Wallace (who was part of the eight-man Canadian rowing team that won gold in Barcelona), and then enjoyed the life of being a Canadian hero, doing a series of endorsements and making a series of personal appearances and motivational speeches across the country. However, within a decade of her awesome triumph, Laumann slowly underwent a psychological meltdown that bottomed out when John suddenly and surprisingly announced to her that he wanted to end their marriage, and then during a speaking engagement in Phoenix in 2006, she locked her two kids, William and Kate, in a hotel room because, reasoned Laumann, “to prevent myself from screaming abuse at them, or worse, hitting them.” That was the time she realized that she desper-

Cabernet and Merlot with a Napa Valley twist I have to admit that I seldom drink New World wines. I am a confessed Francophile and Italophile when it comes to my wine drinking habits. I rarely drink wines from Argentina, Chile, South Africa or Napa Valley. However, if I have to pick up a region to buy wine from all the above mentioned above, I

will definitely will choose, Napa. This American wine region has always sparked my attention since my early days of wine drinking. Napa valley has a mix of different factors in my mind that makes it special such as history, fame and terroir. Let’s start with the first one, history. The name Napa means the “the land of plenty “. It was given by The Wappo Indians who inhabited the valley. During that time, you could find in Napa plenty of salmon, waterfowl, elk, bears, wildcats and wild grapes too. Settler George Calvert is known to be the first to plant wine grapes in the valley, in what is now Yountville, in 1836. Other pioneers included John Patchett, who planted the first commercial vineyard, and Hamilton Walker Crabb, who experimented with more than four hundred grape varieties. By 1889,

more than 140 wineries were found across the valley, among them Schramsberg ( 1862 ), Beringer ( 1876 ), Inglenook ( 1879 ) and Spottswoode ( 1882 ), all started by Germans. In 1981, Napa Valley was designated as the first American Viticulture Area (AVA) making it the first in the United States. Napa Valley became famous in the world with the revelatory 1976“Judgement of Paris tasting “in which California wines were pitted against some of the most important French Grand Crus. The 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and the 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon finished ahead of top French wines in a blind tasting lead by European wine experts. This was Napa Valley’s golden era in which vintners worked and learned together. To many, Robert Mondavi was the symbol of Napa Valley wine. His name and winery were recognized throughout the world. Not only Mondavi produced exceptional wine, he also sold it with passion and verve. He was the public relations figure of all Californian producers when he praised the pleasures of drinking wine with food, a very foreign ideal at the time when Americans were raised to drink iced tea, milk and soft drinks with meals. Now, let’s take a look at the Terroir of Napa Valley. The Napa Valley is a very small winemaking region. It is just 30 miles long by 5 miles wide, producing only 4% of California’s total wine production. To put it further into context the Champagne region in France is twice the size of the Napa Valley and, Bordeaux eight

times. However, despite its modest size the Napa Valley is a region of enormous soil and topographical diversity, which manifests itself in the wines produced. Of the twelve major soil series in the world, six can be found in the Napa Valley, within which there are more than 100 different soil variations. Nestled between the Mayacamas Mountains to the west and the Vacas to the east the picturesque Napa Valley stretches from the warmer Calistoga area in the north to the cooler Carneros in the south. Vineyards are planted on the fertile valley floor, on the benchlands above the river, and on the thinner poor soils of the mountainsides. The other critical aspect to the terroir diversity of Napa is the effect of the ocean. As the Napa

Valley is a warm, sunny region, the cooling fog that the hot Central Valley pulls in from the cold Pacific waters creates many different microclimates and is fundamental to moderating the warm temperatures. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is grown throughout the Napa Valley (and indeed California). Cabernet Sauvignon wines from different subareas in Napa are often blended to create finished wines that carry the Napa Valley appellation, or indeed, if blended with Cabernet wines from outside the Napa Valley, to make wines with the more generic Californian appellation. To really experience the diversity of terroir of Napa it is best to seek out wines specific to the different sub-appellations (called AVA’s in The United States) within the

Napa Valley – and there are sixteen of these. Given the diversity of soils and microclimates even vineyards side by side can make very different wines. However, many of these wines are on the expensive side. The extremely high cost of vineyard land and stringent environmental restrictions in the Napa Valley, particularly for hillside sites contribute to the high production costs. It is my wish that this article spark your interest in trying some of the wines from Napa. Stay tuned for next week for more tasting notes on Napa Valley wines and an exploration of Californian Rhone Blends and other important wine varieties in California. What is laser light therapy Sponsored

By Jessica Romano Montreal Times

Healing with the use of light is not a new concept. Light therapy was reported to be effective for many conditions by Hippocrates. Today with the development of laser and its special properties, using light as a healing treatment has gained popularity especially among many athletes worldwide. Because we can now use specific wavelengths of light and give accurately measured doses of energy directly to the appropriate treatment site it provides faster recovery from injuries. Laser therapy has been successfully sued around the world for over 25 years, with ho reported long-term or irreversible side effects. Low level lasers supply energy in the form of non-thermal photons of light that is transmitted through the skin's layers, the epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue under the skin, delivering all wavelengths in the visible range. However light waves in the near infrared ranges penetrate the deepest of all light waves in the visible spectrum.

16

When the low level light is applied into the site it optimizes the natural immune responses of the body. It is a scientific fact that light transmitted to the blood in this way has positive effects throughout the whole body, supplying vital oxygen, energy and collagen. Laser light therapy is quite passive, the most notable sensation is the touch of the probe of the laser, as it comes into contact with the skin. people have reported a slight tingling along a nerve pathway. Some have noted that they are able to sense a slight feeling of warmth. Following a laser therapy session over 80% can notice an immediate improvement and feel better. Generally the more chronic or severe the condition , the longer it takes to respond. The majority of conditions can take anywhere from 4 to 10 treatments. According to published medical reports, many acute and chronic conditions may be improved or eliminated with Low Level Light Therapy ( LLLT ). Here are some of the conditions LLT can help to improve : • Acupuncture Points -

Arthritis - Neuralgia • Back Pain - Knee PainNeck Pain - Joint Pain • Bursitis - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Tennis Elbow • Herniated/Bulging Discs Migraine Headaches • Trigger Points - Sprains & Strains - Tendonitis • Fibromyalgia - TMJ Pain - Nerve Pain • Plantar Fasciitis - Muscle Pains & Spasms The benefits of laser light therapy are numerous and the effect varies according to the person and type of condition. LLLT relieves acute and chronic pains, it increase the speed and quality of tissue repair by increasing blood supply. It stimulates the Immune and nerve function, promotes faster wound healing and reduces inflammation. Scientific research and studies have shown it to be effective and safe and has FDA approval.
