A program that helps to rebuild a normal life

n September 2006, the rise in the number of violent crimes and the tragedy at Dawson College inspired Sun Youth to create a special fund dedicated to crime victims, thanks to the generosity of the Montreal business community. "Typical cases referred to the program are linked to violent crimes such as fraud, domestic violence and sexual exploitation", says Alex Vidal, Sun Youth Crime Prevention Supervisor. This program also works in conjunction with the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) Survivors project that allows police officers as well as hospital, community and school staff to be better equipped to intervene adequately with victims of sexual exploitation. Since the beginning of the Crime Victims Program, more than 40 victims of sexual exploitation have received Sun Youth’s help. One of

those victims is Laurence (fictitious name). She was working at a financial institution when she met a man who promised her a dream life. The man who she fell in love with was actually a manipulator and this is how her downward spiral started. She explains: "with time, the abuse and violence began (…) I lost a lot of money and I had a strong attachment to this man, it was very difficult for me to get out of this situation. I was ashamed of my situation and of myself. I felt like a burden to the world. I lost myself during that time". After a particularly violent event, Laurence was fearful for her life and with the support of her family, she decided to report the man to the police. Thanks to her testimony, other women came forward. In April 2017, she was referred to Sun Youth by her CAVAC agent (Assistance Centres for Victims of Crime). “I felt supported. They took me as I was without any

judgment. They were empathetic and understanding”, says Laurence. The help she received from Sun Youth gave her the strength to regain control of her life, “to be able to see people help others with conviction and passion made me realize that we need more people like that”. Through her path and with her strength, she is today a woman who is rebuilding her life. She will return to University in September. “If you are well supported and have a good support system, there is always a way out”, she concludes. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, Sun Youth is proud to be able to help women who have the courage to get out of an unbearable situation. What still motivates the organization after 64 years is the desire to improve the quality of life of its beneficiaries and thus help make a difference whatever their situation is.

whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate

job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you'll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled "How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes". bird watching was relegated to the usual assortment of pigeons and sparrows that flew by and briefly landed in the public parks and squares throughout my hometown of Montreal. To see more please click link below or go to our website and enter Nebraska in the search bar: www.mtltimes.ca

n February 14th, we found ourselves tuned in to the news watching another horrific gun attack - this time in Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 innocent people were killed and 19 others seriously injured by a young man who had easy access to a firearm - not just any firearm, but an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. As students protest and march across the US in unprecedented numbers, taking the initiative to put an end to gun deaths, many Canadians are wondering about our own gun control laws and if they are enough. Do

According to the Criminal Code, a 'prohibited' firearm is: A - a handgun that has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge, but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union. B - a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted, is less than 660 mm in length, or is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length. C - an automatic firearm, whether or not it has been altered to discharge only one projectile with one pressure of the trigger. D - any firearm that is prescribed to be a prohibited firearm. No matter what laws are in place - as long as are guns in the By Bonnie Wurst there world, there will be deaths by guns. province wanted to set up its own registry it would get no help from the federal government. But in Quebec, the province started working to create its own long-gun registry after the national one was dismantled. In October 2012, after a legal challenge by the National Firearms Association and a pro-gun lobby group tried to block it, a Quebec judge upheld the constitutionality of the registry and on January 29th 2018,

Quebec’s own long-gun registry came into effect. But will Canada's new legislation have any real impact, will it keep us safer? Although Canada has far less deaths caused by guns than in the United States (one is more likely to be shot to death in the US than to die in a car accident in Canada) - we are still number four in the OECD (an international democratic/economic organization with 35 mem-

ber countries). It is time to bring forth legislation which actually achieves the goal of securing the safety of all Canadians and future generations. It is time for our leaders to stop their political dissent and wrangling over gun laws - that historically goes back to 1892. Let us just do it right, for once and for always. Our children should not ever have to fear going to school, never again.

The best sugar shacks in and around Montreal Reservations: by phone 514.288.0914 or email: info@scena.ca

Cabane à sucre Au Pied de Cochon It's the first to make the list and also the most talked about sugar shack in Quebec: Martin Picard's Au Pied de Cochon Sugar Shack is unlike any other. The chef has been elevating the traditional sugar shack cuisine to another lever for years now, serving unconventional desserts before the meals and adding foie gras to almost any dish. Maple cotton candy, maple whippet cookies, and a yogurt gelatin with jello cubes of maple inside are just the beginning. Au Pied de Cochon sugar shack is always fully booked months in advance, but you can always check for last minute cancellations on their Facebook Page.

La Cabane d'à côté Martin Picard's student at La Cabane au Pied de Cochon just opened his own "sugar shack" simply called La Cabane d'à côté (The shack next door) that sits on the land next to the Érablière Au Pied de Cochon. There, traditional food slightly revisited is served. The concept is based on the idea of preparing the dishes right in front of the customers, highlighting the use of the cabane's masterpiece oven: the woodfire evaporator. The atmosphere is intimate and cosy but nonetheless spectacular, where expertise and know-how come and go, in a real show. Led by chef Vincent Dion-Lavallée, La Cabane d'à côté has been open since Feb.15th for their first year of operation and will be open from Wednesday to Sunday until • March 3, 2018

Protecting your skin

F

By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

ebruary, you are not always a sunny month here in the north. We need the sun on our

skin. Let’s join the airport lineups to sunny destinations and be a chameleon. Lose the mittens, scarves and winter boots. Stuff them into the luggage side pockets … quickly, before your luggage is whisked to the bowels of the plane. Don the sunglasses, the sandals and the Hawaiian shirt. Inventory for the hundredth time the passports, the camera and scuba fins jutting from carry-ons. Adjust the sunhat. Revel in the buzz about the resort destination, weather reports. Dream of the margarita and pina colada’s and island music. The golf, the tours, the zen. Is it Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican, St Martens, Costa? Any

place where the sun shines to heal our souls is good for us. If you are fortunate to have lots of melanin in your skin to help protect you from the strong rays, then you should not be overly worried (but don’t be foolish) about sunburn. If your skin is lily white, BEWARE. Most of us have experienced sunburn. Not a pleasant experience. By now, most of us know our limitations. Your children do not, so it is up to you to teach them. A loyal customer called me last week, excited about her trip to Bermuda. Please tell me what I should bring with me in skin care because I do NOT want to use the chemical products on the market. "Use the zinc oxide when you are in the sun. Every morning apply emu or argan oil (mixed with tamanu is even better). The butters ( Sheamu and Shargan) are wonderful and can be applied anytime, but are especially

nourishing after a cleansing bath or shower. I also suggested our revitalizing eye oil blend. People LOVE it all over the face, not just around the eyes. And the SPF of these products is good. Moisturizing and protecting." Do not travel anywhere without the neem salve and or the neembodybar. Essential in case it is the season for nosee-ums, bug bites, etc. We are not permitted to list any SPF factors but our customers look them up. They tell us that tamanu is an 18, emu is an 8, carrot is near 40. OILS do contain SPF factors and can help against extreme weathers. And of course, good old ZINC, the block. The other side (reverse) is much like the 5, 10, and 25 cents; having St. Edwards crown on top of two rows of maple leaves with a ribbon on the bottom. Because of its large size and value, it was not issued every year, and most Victorian dates have modest mintages. All are of great value in top condition, and are still scarce even somewhat used. 1890 is the scarcest date By Michael Joffre with only 20,000 minted, and few surviving (espemtltimes.ca cially in new condition!) in 1870 by the Dominion today. of Canada, it was the highThe early 20th century est value coin. George V 1911-1936 again kept a similar design, but in 1920 the silver content was reduced from 92.5% to 80%. The mintages were greatly increased during WWI and by 1919 over a million were made annually. By the early 1920’s there were so many 50 cent pieces around that much of the 1920, and almost all of the 1921 dates were held back from circulation and eventually melted. Only 75 to 100 1921’s are known to have survived, and this coin sells for between $20,000 and $250,000 depending on condition!!! The coin has a nickname as the “King” of Canadian coins because it is so hard to find. No other dates appear until 1929, and then only 1931, 1932, 1934, and 1936, the last 4 minted in much lower quantities. So putting together a date set of these coins will indeed be hard work, and cost quite a bit. There was a total design change for the George VI (1937-1952) issues. For the first time the bust of the king (or queen) had no crown on top…just a bare head. On the reverse there is a Canadian coat of arms. Most years

through the 1940’s and 1950’s were produced in large quantities, and this

coin was well circulated in commerce. Four basic varieties exists with the 1947 coins. There are two types of 7’s in the date, one with the tip of the 7 facing left (this is called “Straight 7”), and another with the tip curved right. To make things more interesting some of 1947 coins were minted with a small maple leaf after the date...we will explain why in a future article. The rarest combination is one where the 7 is

For the 50 This is a classic Canadian cent, an image of a howling wolf was struck...designed by well known artist Alex Colville. In 1968 all 50 cent pieces were struck in pure nickel, this continued until 2000, and since have been made of plated steel. For some reason the bust of the Queen appears with a crown starting in 1990, and this continued until 2002. A decision was made in the early 2000’s to end the regular circulation of 50 cent pieces. Since 2003 no coins were distributed for general use as money...however these coins are still produced every year in mint sets, and obtainable in rolls rarity. Lime Pie Wine & Dining

e just returned from a holiday in Dominica; a little island paradise between Guadeloupe and Martinique. There are no high rises and no resorts on the island. It is a taste of what the Caribbean was before tourism took over. We found a little café on one of the beaches. The owner was a gal from France who served Lime Pie. She used the limes from the Island which have a rather interesting skin and a very pungent flavour. She used a regular pie crust and kept it in the freezer until someone ordered a piece. The first time we saw it we said we would pass on the slice – it was not what we were expecting. She was so confident in the lime pie, she gave us a

piece on the house. It was really good! We also returned twice to enjoy it some more! She would not pass on her recipe but here is a lime pie recipe below. It uses egg yolks in the custard filling. You may decide to make a meringue with the egg whites or freeze them for another use. I used some whipped cream for the topping. Ingredients: • preheat oven to 350ºF Crust: • 4 cups graham wafer crumbs (ginger crumbs might work well here too) • 3 tbsp sugar • 120 g melted butter (1/2 cup) • 1/4 tsp cinnamon Filling: • 4 large egg yolks • Zest of one lime (about 1 tbsp) • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice

(about three to four limes) • 1 can sweet and condensed milk Garnish: • Whipped cream or meringue In a medium sized bowl, combine the graham wafer crumbs, sugar and cinnamon. Pour in the melted butter and stir until the mixture begins to stick together. Pat into a 9 inch pie plate and up the sides. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, until the crust turns a golden brown. Cool to room temperature. In a stand mixture, using a whip attachment, beat the egg yolks until thickened. Add in the can of sweet and condensed milk and half the lime juice and the lime zest. When incorporated, add in the rest of the lime juice. Pour the batter onto the prepared crust. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes or until the filling sets. Cool to room temperature and then refrigerate for at least two hours. Slice and garnish with the whipped cream or meringue. any people are unaware of the tremendous benefits of acupressure. It's an effective non invasive technique that uses pressure on traditional acupuncture points with fingers instead of needles. In recent evidence based research acupressure has been shown to be calming, relieves pain and induces relaxation. It's an ancient Chinese method that involves applying pressure to meridian points on the body to

relieve pain. The human body has 365 pressure points and 12 main meridians that carry energy through the body. These meridians connect to the brain and the organs associated with the specific meridian. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same point, acupuncture uses needles but acupressure at the hands of a trained therapist uses gentle and firm pressure . Acupressure deals with all aspects of a person as whole and not as separate parts. It relaxes muscular tension and balances the vital life forces of the body.

Following is a list of common benefits that many people report after having an acupressure session. • Relief of Stress and tension • Relaxation of mind and body • Increased blood circulation • Helps the body in the removal toxic waste • Provides relief from head, neck and shoulder aches • Promotes the healing of injuries • Increases energy Levels For more information please see ad below
