Projet Montreal to hold public consultations on Mount Royal Rd

P

rojet Montreal has apparently listened and will be holding public consultations on their proposed plan to ban traffic from using Mount Royal, after bending to a petition signed by 26,000 people - who were adamantly opposed to the pilot project, which would see Camillien Houde Way closed to cars for the spring and summer of 2018. Sue Montgomery, mayor of CDN–NDG said at their borough's council meeting

last night, after debating a motion by the opposition Ensemble Montréal, that Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante will be announcing a plan to consult the public, 'before, during and after' the pilot project. The motion was adopted unanimously by the borough council, which included four Projet Montreal councillors and two opposition councillors, according to a Montreal Gazette report. Luc Ferrandez, the city’s executive-commit-

tee member responsible for large parks and green spaces, announced the pilot project last February, creating a backlash from many people. He had said at the time, 'Mount Royal will become greener and safer, with fewer cars and less parking' - but clearly did not expect the passion Montrealers have for the mountain, whether drivers used the road as a shortcut or to enjoy the scenic ride.

Wines for La Cabane de Sucre Saturday, March 17, 2018

ou know that Spring is around the corner when daylight saving time arrives and we start hearing about St Patrick’s Day. Another gastronomic event that marks the beginning of Spring is the official opening of sugar shack season ( cabane à sucre).

By Marco Giovanetti mtltimes.ca

Ever since my arrival in Quebec in 1994, I go to la cabane à sucre only once a year. As you know, it is a intense celebration of sugar, salt and fat and my body cannot handle that too much. However, I do enjoy very much the food such as delicacies such as pea soup, meat pie, scrambled eggs and oreilles de crisse and of course the sumptuous maple syrup based desserts. A few years ago, I discovered a sugar shack where you can bring your own wine. From my past experiences, most people in la cabane à sucre have only water or milk. For me, this does not really work since I am not a milk drinker and frankly

• March 17, 2018

having only water in a restaurant is just very odd. I can't recall the name of the shack right now but it will come out in a few days. Actually, I designated my wife to do the research. What wines can you bring in a sugar shack?. When considering your choices, keep in mind the combination of sugar-saltfat mentioned above. I strongly suggest that you consider fruity wines unoaked with a good acidity. The proper wines will aid your digestion and relieve some of that food coma that will hit you once you leave the table!! In addition, a cabane à sucre going out is by nature a very social outing. I recommend bringing easy drinking or pleasure wines that don't require too much contemplation. The last thing you want is to find yourself isolated in the table corner sniffing wines and taking silly notes. Now for the recommendations. For the Canadian pea soup, I recommend to try the Relax Bubbles ( SAQ # 13466926, $13.95) which is an equal blend of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling. This German sparkling wine is medium body and fruit forward recalling pear and khaki fruit. It has just the right amount of sweetness to handle the rich mouthfeel of the soup. It will also

fare well with the homemade pickles, coleslaw and cretons present in the sugar shack. For the omelets, pork rinds, ham, and fries, why not have a Canadian wine?. The Henry Pelham Pinot Noir 2016 ( SAQ # 13470722, $19.80) will help you wash down all that greasy food with its lovely juicy, racy mouthwatering acidity and pretty flavors of tart cherry, cranberry and fresh earth. My second choice will be the Finca de los Padrillos Pinot Noir 2015 ( SAQ # 13425956, $17.95). It is a pretty Pinot Noir from Argentina with smoky red fruit nuances and cracked black pepper. Medium body, it will be perfect especially with the smoked ham and bacon. What wine to have with Hot Chicken Sandwich? Last week, I went to eat at St-Hubert with my wife’s family to celebrate the birthday of my niece. I ended up eating a hot chicken sandwich which is one of my favorites dishes from the Quebec comfort food category. Traditionally, I have enjoyed this dish in the past with a Pepsi soft drink but that evening as I was eating my

gravy drenched sandwich, I wondered what wines would be good with that. Later last week, I decided to create my own version of Hot Chicken Sandwich. My sandwich started with some shredded cooked chicken. Many recipes call for leftovers, or for a rotisserie chicken, but if you really want your gravy to shine you could do what I did: simmer a whole chicken in a quart of chicken stock and enough extra water to cover, along with ingredients like cracked black pepper, bay leaf, onion, carrot, and celery, until the meat is pulling away from the bones. Then remove the chicken, cool it and shred it, reserving the liquid for making the gravy and peas. For the gravy, I made a roux, and used my chicken poaching liquid instead of beef broth that many recipes call for with paprika, homemade ketchup and other spices. This resulted in a thick and savory sauce, much more than I needed for my sandwiches (though I did find a use at the end for the remainder). For the peas, I sautéed them with some garlic and butter, using that to heat the drained peas, then finishing them with some black pepper and a bit of the remaining poaching liquid. Now, it was time to put together the sandwich. I

started with a piece of buttered white bread. I used my homemade white bread, but you could go with a normal bread available at the supermarket. You don’t need to toast it, just butter a piece of bread and put it on your plate. Then I covered the bread with a good thick layer of poached shredded chicken. After, I putted the top slice of buttered bread on and added ladle more gravy on it. The gravy should cover the sandwich and spread out onto your plate. then scatter a good sized spoonful of peas over the sandwich A comfort dish like Hot Chicken Sandwich needs a rich generous wine. A inexpensive Roussillon or a Corbières will handle well the dark and rich gravy. For instance, the Mas Janeil Le Petit Pas 2016 Côte du Roussillon 2016 ( SAQ # 12561198, $16.60) really shines with this dish. Fruit driven and generous with spicy flavors of licorice, smoke, cumin and plump tannins. This wine is a blend of Carignan, Syrah with Mourvedre made with the Carbonic Maceration method. This vinification

technique allows the twine to keep fresh and helps bring out the aromas of these Mediterranean grapes. My second wine choice was the Jean-Noël Bousquet La Garnotte 2016 ( SAQ # 11374411, $10.65). From the Corbières wine area in the Languedoc, this wine always overdelivers in quality for the price it commands. A southern blend of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache, this is a darker and richer wine than the Petit Pas. If your sandwich has more brown meat than white, this wine will be terrific with it. I loved its blue and dark fruit nose seasoned with roasted garrigue herbs, cacao and other spices.

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

What you need to know about ‘Net Neutrality’

B

ack in 2015 under the Obama administration, ‘Net Neutrality’ was introduced. The FCC (US Federal Communications Commission) approved regulations making sure the internet was at a level playing field, by preventing the major broadband service providers like Verizon, AT&T and Comcast from blocking or slowing down apps or services which compete against their own.

The whole idea was to treat all web traffic equally so that a provider, like Comcast for example, would not be able to charge extra to an online streaming service like Netflix to secure a faster path to its customers – or not be allowed to block or slow down sites like Google and Facebook. http://mtltimes.ca/Montreal/entertainment/movies/montreal-actor-jamie-mayers-journey-to-venus/

t’s been nearly a year since Eda Holmes took the helm as the new artistic and executive director of the Centaur Theatre. And somehow, as if destiny prescribed it, her first season where she gets to decide what productions will grace the Centaur stage is a rather landmark one. The 2018-2019 season will mark a major milestone for the Centaur, as it will celebrate its 50th anniversary. “Montreal theatre audiences are passionate, intelligent and curious, not to mention loyal and intrepid, which is why this season will be a celebration of the Centaur’s audiences,” said Ms. Holmes during the annual launch event to unveil its up-

As well, early bird subscribers (before May 11) will be entered in a draw for a number of prizes including a one-night getaway at the Hotel Bonaparte in Old Montreal; renewing, returning and new subscribers will be able to take advantage of last year’s prices for 4, 5 or 6-play packages before June 30; and new subscribers 30 years of age and under can sign up for the complete Essential Series of plays for only $150, which includes a Bring-a-Friend Pass. West Island retiree has launched a service to help seniors learn about technology. Monica Reider, of Dollard des Ormeaux, has always had a knack for understanding electronic communications and always enjoyed teaching people. Now she offers training sessions for Facebook, Skype, smartphones, computers, etc at her clients’ own homes. She wants her clients to enhance their lifestyles However, perhaps most importantly, Reider (who is 62 and proud of being a senior) is close to the age of many of her clients. “I am not intimidating to seniors,” as she puts it. Her clients generally range in age from their 60s to early 90s. “I start by asking questions, seeing what my clients’ needs are. I listen to them. I listen to what they want to know. Why must they wait for a course to come along with an abundance of information that is, frankly, useless to them. They don’t need to know the intricacies of a computer, they just want to email, chat, or even play games like solitaire. I show them, step by step. I don’t do it for them. It’s important that they do it for themselves. Everything is written out and we go over it as many times as necessary until they can comfortably manage on their own. Everyone is different. Everyone works at their own pace.” “Sometimes when younger people try showing us how to use technology, they have little patience or understanding. The young ones were born into this computer world, we weren’t, and they sometimes forget that important fact. For them it’s 2nd nature, for us • March 17, 2018

it’s a whole new learning process. I’m a ‘Hands on’ person and know how important it is. I show people and guide them so that they can do this on their own.” It is becoming increasingly important to cope with modern electronic technology and communications for both business and social reasons. Reider points to online banking as an important feature that many seniors are unfamiliar with. “It’s a great feeling; it’s liberating when you

don’t need to go out in bad weather just to make a bank transfer,” she notes. Reider can also show how to sell unwanted items the modern way, via electronic notice boards such as Craigslist and Kijiji, helping clients to de-clutter. Making purchases online via E-bay and PayPal is also becoming increasingly important. “But the biggest push for seniors is coming from wanting to keep in touch with their families and friends. Young people today prefer to communicate online by Facebook, Twitter, and email; letter writing is almost a lost art.” She also notes Canada Post’s stated intention to phase out home mail delivery as another reason to get aboard with electronic communications. “Telephone communications can be carried out easily and inexpensively via

Skype. Learning about electronic communications is especially pertinent for many Montreal seniors whose families have moved away from Quebec. These new skills help to keep seniors in touch and break the isolation.” “Smart phones can also be intimidating for some users. I had one client who bought such a phone for emergency use, but never used it, never turned it on, not even once for an entire year. She was embarrassed to admit she didn’t know how to use it. She is not alone. I can show people how to use these things...” Reider jokes about how her husband always used to call for her whenever the family TV or VCR machine wasn’t working properly, and how she was able to quickly get it working right. To supplement her knack with new technology, she has taken various courses at the Cummings Centre, The West Island Career Centre, and at John Abbott College in recent years. Reider also tends to be one of the consumers who rushes to buy the latest technology just so she can stay abreast of the newest developments. Reider recently impressed the Quebec government enough to merit receiving a new business start-up grant. “I go to my clients’ place of residence to show them how to use their new technology. I have clients over the West Island, in NDG, Cote St Luc, Park Extension, and downtown. There’s a one hour minimum with my services. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, or credit card.” Monica can be reached at 514-830-9156 and at info@50PlusPC.ca

‘Devil’s Itch’ in Disguise C

Baie D’Urfe invests almost $300K in playground and curling rink

By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

“Have you ever heard of ‘Devil’s Itch’?” the phonein customer asks. “No, but I am looking it up as we speak.” I scan the horrors of ‘skin on fire’. “It happened to me”, she continues. “I had sunburn and the itching started after I showered. It felt like ants crawling inside me. It was a hell. I called to tell you that your zinc oxide saved me. Nothing else worked. Any cream or lotion I applied made it worse. Yet your zinc worked.” This phone conversation surfaces in my mind several months later in Prince George, BC. A beautiful silver-haired, elegant, woman enters the booth, wide-eyed and anxious. She looks distraught. “I am at a loss.” She manages a smile, “ I do not even know how I made it down to this craft show. I just had to get out of the apartment, but I am not well. I am so itchy I cannot stand it. I do not know what to do. The doctors first thought I had scabies and that was a nightmare. But now they say I don’t have that. Nothing suggested helps. The relentless itching is all over." I thought of the similarity to Devil’s itch and

And her diary about the Netflix reboot is basically a chronicle of an emotionally-charged return to Stars Hollow, especially the “Fall” episode that paid tribute to actor Edward Herrmann, who portrayed her father, and who passed away last year before production begun on the reboot. All in all, the book is quite enjoyable to read, as Graham delivers this collection of essays in a very self-deprecating manner that is more realistic and genuine in approach. And as you read each essay, you can actually hear Graham recite each line of prose in her trademark breathless, rapid-fire patter that she is known for and has made famous through her Lorelai Gilmore and Sarah Braverman characters. Lauren Graham has firmly established herself as television’s favorite single mom. But with books like Talking As Fast As I Can, she has proven she can write snappy words of wisdom as well as deliver them. And while “Gilmore Girls” fans eagerly await production on the recently-announced second series of new episodes for Netflix, she can turn this book into a solo stage show, so that we can get our fix of that delightfully breathless Lauren Graham rapid patter.

n aligned spine is associated with better health and human function. A body in alignment has the structural advantage to resist gravity with proper posture over time, to move with proper postural biomechanics, and to resist pathology associated with postural distortion patterns. Your posture is the structural framework of your body, a component of health and wellness that is of fundamental importance throughout the lifecycle. Posture is impacted by environmental factors, such as occupations that promote standing posture versus seated posture. Whether seated or standing throughout the day proper postural biomechanics supports the development of Postural Fitness to prevent postural collapse. According to McGill (2014) standing is better for the body than sitting is. There are many positive health effects with standing versus sitting such as caloric expenditure, better posture, and increased dynamic movement throughout the day. While seated the goal is to mimic standing posture as it reduces stress and strain to the lower back. Occupations that require prolonged sitting should

eration is how thoracic posture affects cervical alignment. While seated many people have a tendency to have flexor dominant posture with postural hyperkyphosis. This C-shaped spinal curvature is associated with a higher degree of forward head posture. Quek et al. (2012) demonstrated that the presence of postural hyperkyphosis is related to decreased range of motion of the cervical spine, cervical postural distortion patterns, neck pain, and cervical impairments. For correction of postural alignment, the thoracic spine has an ‘upstream’ effect on the cervical spine and a ‘downstream’ effect on the lumbar spine. Postural biomechanics is directly impacted by seated posture, especially in a society with a tendency toward working while seated instead of standing. An emphasis on proper postural biomechanics renders better health and functional output of the body. If you are experiencing pain, do not ignore your body’s cry for help, and consult your local chiropractor for a spinal check-up! what services it provides. Each retirement residence provides a certain level of service. It can range from independent living, assisted living and memory care. The level of service depends on each residence or community. 2. How is the residence managed? Find out the staff to resident ratio. Ask if they are a certified residence. Check to see how the staff interacts with residents during your tour. Is there a positive atmosphere? Find out about their nursing care abilities and how often a doctor visits the residence. Another important aspect is what safety and security features are available. 3. What services are provided and what will cost you extra? Do not shy away from financial questions. You need to know exactly what is included with your rent and how much services cost, how you can terminate a lease and what financial penalties may apply after ending a contract early. 4. What are the types of activities that are provided? In many cases, the social lives of residents improve

once a move is made into a retirement home. Most residences have a monthly calendar of activities. Ask for this calendar and inquire about the various activities that are offered. 5. Is there a referral agency or counsellor that can guide you through the process? Referral agencies or housing counsellors, such as Lianas Services, can be a tremendous source of support and guidance. Very often, their services are provided for free to families as their fees can be covered by sponsored senior communities. Their experienced advisors can help navigate the many challenges of transitioning into a senior residence and they can help ask the tough questions when narrowing down the search for the perfect senior community. promote frequent postural adjustments. Regular changes in postural biomechanics are more advantageous than continued sedentary posture. To integrate postural changes take a posture break each hour for 30 seconds to reverse flexor dominant posture associated with postural collapse due to gravity. Sitting on an instable surface such as an exercise ball or posture cushion also promotes frequent changes in posture, which is advantageous for better spinal alignment. Researchers sought to evaluate measurements of seated posture of the thoracolumbar junction and lumbar spine. After 10 minutes of sitting, on average the spinal angles demonstrated flexion of 24 degrees at the lumbar spine and 12 degrees at thoracolumbar regions relative to standing. This research is important because it demonstrates that people have a tendency of increased flexion with sitting in relation to standing (Claus et al., 2015). With postural correction, the participants of the study demonstrated correct seated posture with a thoracolumbar angle of 2 degrees, which was similar to the thoracolumbar angle while standing of 1 degree (Claus et al., 2015). Postural correction is thus important for proper postural biomechanics while seated to emulate standing posture. Another important consid-

re you or a loved one considering a move to a retirement home or senior community? Many Canadians have either already made the move or are considering such a move. Some moves are for proactive reasons (i.e. wanting to downsize and enjoy a better quality of life) while other moves are for reactive reasons (i.e. physical or cognitive issues, death of a spouse, safety and security, etc.). Regardless of the reason for wanting to transition into a retirement home, the search for the perfect residence can be stressful and overwhelming. Like any important decision, it takes time, research and preparation to make the best choice in choosing the right retirement home or senior community. Here are 5 important questions you should ask when looking for a retirement home or senior community: 1. What level of care will I need? When looking to move into a retirement residence, it is vital to do the research and find out

headaches, tooth grinding, upset stomach and digestive problems, sleep loss and exhaustion, skin problems , unhealthy weight gain or loss, and of course, loss of sex drive. These are just the physical symptoms. Stress is linked to depression, anxiety, mood swings, confusion, restlessness, irritability, insecurity, forgetfulness, and a host of other negative mental and behavioral symptoms. We hear about good stress, bad stress. How do we know the difference? How does all of our stress accumulate? Stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. What’s it doing to us? With stress so clearly linked to our health, it is shocking to me that we

don’t think about our own level of stress and do something about lowering it. Oh yes, we say “I am so stressed” but do we really know what that means? The things that cause stress are called stressors. Do we know our own stressors? Are we aware of the feeling of stress on our own bodies? Have you ever felt sick to your stomach during a test? Have you had days when you were so loaded down with homework that you had trouble sleeping? Have you ever been so worried about something that you ended up with a terrible headache? If so, then you know what it's like to feel stress. Stress is often worn as a badge of accomplishment in our society. It’s not enough that we compete to see who can do the most, but we compete to see who can handle the most stress doing it. With such an unhealthy attitude towards stress, it’s no wonder that stress-related illnesses are so common. Canadian Mental Health Association slogan in 2009 was, "Now more than ever, invest in yourself” The number of Canadians reporting stress has increased by 30 per cent since last year, the Canadian Mental Health Association reported at the start of its 58th annual national mental health week in 2009. Recent studies show that it does not seem to be getting any better now in 2018.The economy is down, jobs are being lost, flu season is here and it’s cold outside Stress © Jody Mark Stress is eating at me every minute and second of the day, how do I cope

with the horrible effects and make it go away? I feel so tired and run down and I don't sleep, I lie in bed at night and wonder why it runs so deep. Everyone asks why do you look so sad, do I tell them that my stress is eating me up and that I feel really bad? Does everyone notice how I walk around in a daze, and that I have deep black bags under my eyes nowadays. I wake up every morning feeling so hopeless, like nothing ever goes right and wondering why my life has to be such a mess. Stress is my one worst enemy, it’s taken over my mind and my whole life in every single degree. Source: Stress Effects Life, Poem about Sadness All too often people feel what this poem is all about. Collecting World Gold Coins 1850-1933

F

or those with a slightly enhanced budget, collecting older circulating gold coins is a fun challenge. From around 500 BCE to around 1933, gold coins were an important part of commerce in most western civilizations.

By Michael Joffre mtltimes.ca

In ancient times gold, being scarce, hard to copy, easily meltable, and stampable, made it an ideal thing to use as money. At first designs and animals were put on lumps of round metal, and this evolved to flat coins as we know today, often with a king’s portrait or another national symbol. During a period of roughly 1850 to 1933, gold coinage was pro-

16

duced in very large numbers by wealthy nations. USA, England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and others often minted millions of coins each year. These coins were usually on a “gold standard”. USA, France, Italy, and others would produce their coins .900 fine. A French Franc would be equal to .29g of pure gold. A US Dollar would have about 1.50g of pure gold. So the exchange between USA and France would be fixed at around 5.2 Francs to the Dollar, and not changing like today. This made international commerce much simpler. Some other countries were producing gold coins .916 fine purity. These included England, and others in the British empire. One British “pound” was equal to about 7.32g of pure gold...so the ratio of USA Dollars to Pounds was fixed at about 4.86. Besides commerce, the other advantage ofthis gold system, was one where governments could only spend what they had, or could borrow. They could not “print” money that was

possibility of economic collapse, and so a new system that was not backed by metal needed to be adopted. Thus, using gold coins as money came to an end in 1933 when the USA government made owning gold in quantity a crime, and melted all of that years coinage (creating the ultra-rare $20 1933...the world’s most expensive coin). The great news is that a lot of coins from the 1850-1933 period were saved. Most coins can be purchased at, or close to, the actual gold value. Popular coins from this period include the gold sovereign from England, 20 Franc coins from France, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland, and of course the extensively collected USA $, 2 ½, $5, $10, & $20 gold coins. My advice would be to first look online, and The $20 Liberty Head gold rare coins were first check out how much struck by the US Mint in 1849, before the Civil War. gold is in the coin you want to buy. Of course like in everything there are some rare type and or dates that will cost much more. The best reference book for collecting gold coins by type, and certainly the most complete, as it starts with ancient Greek, and Roman, is “Gold Coins of the World From Ancient Times to Present” by Friedberg. Currently in its 8th edition. It is a bit hard to find, but will give you a basic idea of what is possible to collect, relative pricing, and basic historical information. len Spence knows bagels. With 21 years of working experience in the kitchens of iconic Montreal bagel shops, opening his own shop was an easy decision. Not only did Spence like the idea of being his own boss, but he thinks the art of creating a fresh, traditional Montreal-style bagel has been lost. So begins the story of M.T.L. Bagel. Spence opened M.T.L Bagel in May 2014 in Côte-Saint-Luc. He creates what he calls “breakfast bagels” by using the original recipe used in the early days, when bagels were popularized in the city. Perfectly round, puffy and cooked in a woodburning oven, Spence still makes them as he was taught two decades ago. “The quality of bagels [today is] not what it used

to be when they started out,” Spence says. “Most bagel shops mass produce so the quality is gone.” He emphasizes that he uses real, fresh ingredients, rather than liquids and powders which have become the norm among other bakeries. As the cost of ingredients increases, “a lot of these places have switched to cheaper alternatives,” which do not always yield the best bagel. “Go to your local bagel shop and get a dozen bagels and then come get a dozen from M.T.L. Bagel. Have your kids tell you which one they like,” he says, confident his will ace the taste test. Spence has created 11 bagel varieties with the traditional recipe. There are classics like multigrain, healthy options with reduced sugar, as well as pumpernickel, coconut,

and carrot bagels for those willing to try something different. Additionally, Spence makes sandwiches with his bagels, the most popular being smoked salmon and the Bagel Matin, topped with egg and bacon. Turkey and the vegetarian-friendly TLC bagels are also available, and two Montreal staples collide with his smoked meat bagel. “The goal is to have an M.T.L Bagel cafe in which we specialize good sandwiches,” says Spence about the future of his shop. His bagels are currently also found in Café Depots and Frutta Si grocery store in LaSalle. M.T.L. Bagel is located at 5452 Westminster. Opening hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.
