The most famous love story - Romeo and Juliet at Montreal Opera

F

soprano Marie-Ève Munger (Juliette)

rom the time it was first told, the tragic story of the forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet, two young lovers from rival families, has enchanted audiences the world over and inspired a multitude of literary, stage, film and, of course, operatic adaptations. By far the most popular version, Roméo et Juliette by CharlesFrançois Gounod, offers a powerful and captivating interpretation of the story—presented here in sets, designed by Claude Girard, that have travelled the world. Tenor Ismael Jordi (Roméo), who is making

his debut at our company, and coloratura soprano Marie-Ève Munger (Juliette) will join together to bring our production to life, building on their successful careers, which have already seen them appear on major European and American stages. A native of the Saguenay region, Marie-Ève Munger has quickly gone on to become one of the most highly sought-after singers in France—she is a member of the Théâtre National de l’Opéra Comique’s new Troupe Favart in Paris and is a regular guest of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence— while also making her debuts at Teatro alla Scala

in Milan, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and at the Minnesota Opera. Spanish singer Ismael Jordi has been praised for his impeccable technique, his refined performances, and his rich voice: he appears at some of the most prestigious companies in Europe, including the Royal Opera House (London), Teatro San Carlo (Naples), La Fenice (Venice), the Deutsche Oper (Berlin), and the Opéra de Paris. The arrival of new immigrants has been a contributing factor, of course, souvlakis came with the Greeks, while Arabs and other people from the Middle East have brought shish taouk and many different sauces and flavours. A few decades ago it was sushi, a traditional Japanese food that to some was somehow shocking at first. The shock element came from the fact that this now ubiquitous piece of gastronomy is based on the idea of eating raw fish,

It is not clear where the dish originated, according to some, the name "tartare" doesn't have anything to do with the Tartar (or Tatar) people of Asia, which at one point dominated over large parts of that continent, especially the territory in southern Russia. The name would simply refer to the "tartare sauce" (in France it would be known as "boeuf à la tartare"). But those who claim that the real origin of this meal goes indeed back to the feared Tartar warriors don't accept that rather mild origin of the tartare. Horsemen famous for their military abilities and their capacity to survive as nomadic fighters, the Tartars always on the move, would transport with them pieces of raw meat which they would fish and seafood are place under their saddles. 11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

In recent years the monster has also made it into the animation film series "Hotel Transylvania" where he joins other famous horror characters such as Dracula,Werewolf and The Mummy, but in a festive setting. Adaptations first into plays, and, during the 20th century, into movies and TV series have frequently been made, sometimes as mere exploitation of the appeal the monster still enjoys, without much consideration for the quality of the productions. Jazz Fest lineup: Summer is coming Healing Power of Cold Laser

T

he Montreal International Jazz Festival announced this past Tuesday its lineup for the 2018 edition, the 39th year of the event. The announcement referred to the indoor concerts (paid concerts), the list of outdoor, free shows will be announced later. Those who year after year cover this emblematic event in our city were relieved: if the Jazz Fest is announcing its program then it is a sign that summer is coming after all. Two guitar players, both American, great virtuosos of jazz fusion were announced: Al Di Meola will be on June 28 at 7 p.m. at the Maison symphonique, while the legendary Ry Cooder will be at Theatre Maisonneuve on June 29 at 8 p.m. Di Meola is the winner of the 2015 Miles Davis Award, and on this occasion he will be presenting pieces from his new album. Cooder is known for a distinguished career, his original soundtrack for the movie "Paris Texas," and his involvement in the documentary devoted to Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club. International artists are as usual an essential part of the program. Among the guest artists we can mention the talented Ice-

lander multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds (June 29 at the Maison symphonique, at 7.m.), and New Zealand's Kimbra, winner of a Grammy in 2012, with "her own musical world at the crossroads of pop, jazz, and soul" (July 6, at Club Soda, at 9 p.m.)

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

The national presence will also be noticeable with the François Bourassa Quartet on July 3 at 6 p.m. at Astral, Ontario aboriginal singer Jeremy Dutcher, on July 4 at the Gesù at 6 p.m., and from Nova Scotia, Holly Cole, one of this country's great jazz singers, on July 5, at 7 p.m. at the Maison symphonique. These are among a large contingent of Canadian talents from Quebec and other provinces. Those looking for a dif-

The Orchestre Métropolitain will perform the themes of several animation movies, from "Shrek" to "Kung-Fu Panda" on June 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilfrid Pelletier Theatre. Also, for something different, Spanish jazz pianist Chano Dominguez and the Flamenco Sketches Quintet will be presenting "a reinterpretation of the legendary Miles Davis work." This concert will be on June 28 at the Ludger Duvernay Theatre of the Monument National, at 8 p.m. And for those who missed it last year, "Slav" staged by Robert Lepage, with the voice of Betty Bonifassi and with the innovating style of Ex Machina will be featuring what has been called "A theatrical odyssey based on slave songs".This presentation will go from July 2 to 7, and July 10 to 14 at 8 p.m. at the Theatre du Nouveau Monde. the second time our country put a commemorative design on the 25 cent piece (the first being the bobcat coins of 1967). Coinage in the late 60`s and early 70`s was undergoing a tremendous amount of change. In 1968 the introduction of nickel coinage began, and large amounts of coins were produced to replace the old silver ones. At the same time coin collecting was at its peak, with millions of collectors worldwide and many rare coins trading at all time record prices. Inflation was rampant, and the price of everything seemed to be going up fast. The 1973 25 cent was produced during this peBy Michael Joffre riod. After reading the above, there are probably a few of you who are going to raid the old change jar to see if you have one of the rarer types. Here are a few tips to help you. Firstly, it is very unlikely you have one. I would put the odds at probably 1 in 100,000 or so. So if you have a few 1973 quarters do not expect to find the rare one. Secondly, here is an easy way to tell the small and large bust apart...on the obverse of the large bust the beads look like they are touching the rim, on the small can still be found with a have the older larger bust there is a little bit of little luck in your change, sized bust on the ob- space. hat does it mean to be a woman in 2018? Nowadays, a woman can wear a variety of different hats. They’re stay-at-home moms, career-oriented women, women with careers and families, young women trying to find their place in this world, young girls learning what it is to grow up with teen angst and peer-pressure. Being a woman today

means being fearless and being you. But, most of all, being a woman means allowing yourself to be among other successful women, just like you. So, why not partake in a bad ass conference about women hosted by women with radio personality and journalist Natasha Gargiulo and event architect Maddy Kojakian. Both successful entrepreneurs, respected industry leaders, community builders and moms who understanding the challenges women face every day. The inaugural conference will be fittingly held at Montreal’s iconic Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel on Saturday May 5, 2018. I AM will witness some of the city's most acclaimed female business leaders, visionaries, brand ambassadors, wellness advisories and social media influencers speaking on a variety of topics including confidence, branding and

investment with the aim to arm women with tools they need to become architects of change in their own lives. I AM brings together the next generation of women thought leaders and influencers to inspire and empower each other. I had the pleasure of speaking to both Natasha and Maddy. Here’s my Q&A with these fearless supermoms.

There are so many days, I make a list of things I need to do and I only get through three of them. I need to be busy and feel like I’m constantly doing things. That’s what makes me a better person and a better mother to my daughter. I’m able to do more things with her just because I feel accomplished. Everything I do is for my daughter.

What was the idea behind the I AM conference?

Natasha: Maddy and I have been producing and curating events for women around the city including retreats and events such as Hustle & Heart. A lot of women though weren’t able to leave their lives for four days because they had other obligations, but they really wanted a day where they could be inspired. They said that if they if we were ever to do a conference then they would be in. Thanks ladies, because of your persistence, I AM – a conference for HER was born! What can people expect from each speaker?

Natasha: We realized that our circle of friends has a great story to share and a successful story to share.Whether u want to pursue a job in philanthropy, entrepreneur or you’re a stay-at-home mom and you want a day to figure out your next step in life, you’ll learn from each of these women that regardless of what they do for a living there is something in their story that will inspire you, and push you, and motivate you to take the next step in your life. From CEOs to stay at home moms, to creative entrepreneurs and corporate professionals, the I AM – conference for HER is your opportunity to

connect with driven and focused women, who are empowering each other. Here are the list of presenters: Natasha Gargiulo – Virgin Radio Shannon Walsh – life coach Priya Chopra – publicist/owner 1 Milk 2 Sugars Tatiana Londono – owner Londono Group real estate agency Nadia Saputo – event planner Samantha Kris – Business Coach Laura Casella – Global Morning News anchor Mariella Katz – Social Media & Branding trainer Mandy & Rebecca Wolfe - Mandy’s Salads – co-owners

Maria Antonpoulos – Director of Marketing, Antonopolous Group Hotels Lisa Brookman – co-founder Wise Women blog / psychotherapist Nannette De Gaspe – Luxury skincare company owner / philanthropist Maddy K – upscale event planner Caroline Neron – owner Caroline Néron jewellery & handbag company Solange Tuyishime – UNICEF Canada Ambassador Tuti Do – publicist / owner Rev Communications Erica Diamond – motivational speaker & contributor on Global Morning show Dr. Tamara Gafoor – pediatric emergency

physician Katia Piccolino – Director of Sponsorships & PR – Ritz-Carlton Montreal Leisa Lee – publicist / owner The Leisa Lee Group

How do u manage being moms, working full time and being able to create projects such as these?

Natasha: Every night before we go to bed our minds are still racing because we think about what do we do next? Were we a good mom? Were we the best at our jobs? What about your friends? When’s the last time you spoke to them? I think everybody is just trying to be the best they can be every day. Not putting too much pressure is the best way

Maddy K.: If everyone thinks we have our cool, that’s a myth. What people see on social media is only 10 percent of the reality. We love what we do and we’re very passionate about everything that we do. We love our families. It is a challenge, just like every woman who’s trying to prioritize what’s important. It’s not always easy to get the support that we want and to follow our dreams and figure out what our next steps are. These are all things that a lot of women experience in every stage of their life. The is the reality of being a woman. We do it with grace and with love, and as long as we wake up every morning being true to who we are. Being a happy mom means taking care of yourself and doing what makes you happy, whatever that may be. What is the definition of what it is to be a female leader? (Both at home and in the work place for those who have established careers)

Natasha: We’ve known the definition of what it is to be a woman for a long time but because of what’s been happening with the Me Too movement and Times Up, we’re more confident about what a woman is. I think it’s a great time for us to be women and I don’t mean this in a feminist way, but in a way where it’s our time to be proud of who we are and our accomplishments. continued on Page 12

In the end, it should be him and nobody else the one that must make the crucial decision on whether to get again on the rodeo ring or not. Then lay your hands on your chest and shout "Ha ha ha". Lay your hands on your stomach and yell "Ho ho ho". Concentrate on your feet and trample with your feet on the ground, saying: "Hu hu hu". Do the laughing wave. Bow your upper body to the earth. Have your hands facing down. Focus on the ground. Send your hands upward to heaven. Wail like a siren: "Ha ha ha ha." Perform the laughing

wave several times. Through your laughter, connect heaven and earth. Do the welcome laughter. Within a group, keep eye contact and laugh, until all people in the group are happy. At home, look in the mirror and welcome yourself. When you look into the mirror there is always something to laugh about. Think the mantra: "May all beings be happy. Let there be a world of laughing." See all people in the world and see ourselves as laughing Buddhas. At the end of your Laughter Yoga, sing the mantra "Om" for one minute. Sing it with your own melody. Sense in which part of your body the Om resonates best. Sing the Om until you are calm. Then proceed optimistically through your daily life. Comments, ideas, suggestions are welcome. Contact me: donna@ashcanada.com Or at 514-695-3131 Monday to Friday between 8:30 to 4:30. Health Access Home & Nursing Care www.ashcanada.com

pril 15th to 21st was the 2018 National Volunteer Week and Sun Youth would like to highlight the invaluable contribution of its own volunteers without whom the organization wouldn't be what it is today. Over the last 64 years these thousands of individuals shaped the organization into one of the bestknown and well-respected organizations in Montreal. It all started in 1954 with a group of friends, including 9 yearold Earl De La Perralle and 13 year-old Sid Stevens, who got together to create their own sports and recreation club, financing their activities by publishing a handwritten community newspaper, the Clark Street Sun. Over the years, many other volunteers joined the ranks of the organization, each bringing something new to the table and allowing it to grow in multiple directions. Today Sun Youth still relies heavily on volunteers to accomplish its mission. Only last year 1,735 indi-

viduals lent the organization a helping hand. Together they accomplished 165,764 hours in volunteer work as coaches, youth leaders, counsellors or receptionists. This was the equivalent of 80 fulltime jobs (40 hours a week). Whether sorting goods, recycling, doing accounting or administrative tasks, they are at the core of Sun Youth’s activities. During the Holiday Season alone, 877 individuals, including public figures, and 588 company representatives, volunteered 15,268 hours raising

funds, collecting, sorting and distributing food as well as collecting, wrapping and distributing gifts.
