The West Island Palliative Care Residence celebrates the 20th edition of its Annual Valentine’s Ball in Roaring 20s Style

T

he 20th Annual Valentine’s Ball benefitting the West Island Palliative Care Residence (the Residence) was a huge success raising a record breaking amount of $580,000 net thanks to the generosity of more than 500 guests, sponsors and donors. The annual black- tie event was held at the Pavilion-sur-le-lac of the Château Vaudreuil last night and featured, dinner and dancing with a Roaring 20s theme, fitting for its 20th anniversary. The money raised provides critical funding for the superior palliative care delivered at the Residence. With last night’s stunning achievement, we are proud to announce that $6 million has gone directly to care for the terminally ill and to provide support for their loved ones. To date we have cared for 4,200 patients and over 17,000 members of their families. The opening performance by the “Queen of Blues,” Dawn Tyler Watson set the tone for a

lively evening. Volunteers dressed like Flappers welcomed an array of guests who provide valuable ongoing support to the Residence. Guests included political, sports, and media figures. Special guests from the world of sports included Anthony Calvillo, Montreal Alouettes quarterback legend, inducted into Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Otis Grant, former WBO Middleweight Champion of the World. Hosts of the event this year were Yolande James, RDI and CBC political analyst and Director, Foundation Board of the Residence and Ken Connors, Host, CJAD. Wellknown journalists, Mark Kelley, host of The Fifth Estate on CBC and Isabelle Richer, ICI RDI and ICI Radio Canada journalist, and host of Isabelle Richer, delivered compelling testimonials, both of whom had loved ones who died at the Residence. As family members who have both lost a parent at the Residence, we have

Among the local federal, provincial and municipal politicians who attended the sold-out event were federal MPs Frank Baylis (Pierrefonds-Dollard) and Francis Scarpaleggia (LacSaint-Louis); Quebec MNA’s Monsef Derraji (Nelligan), Greg Kelley (Jacques-Cartier), Carlos Leitão (Baldwin-Cartier) and Kathleen Weil (Notre-Dame-de-Grace). Also present were the mayors of Kirkland, Pointe-Claire, and the Montreal borough of Pierrefonds/Roxboro. “I am deeply touched that the community has adopted the Residence as

one of its own over the last twenty years and has been with us through every stage of growth said Teresa Dellar, Executive Director and CoFounder, West Island Palliative Care Residence. “With all of our recent plans to transform the Residence, we have not lost sight of our main priority - taking care of our patients and families. All of the funds raised at the 20th Annual Valentine’s Ball will support our daily, compassionate care. Thank you to each and every one of you for your support.” We are very grateful to our major sponsors, who have supported the Valentine’s Ball for each of its 20 years: Charles River, TASK, Pfizer Canada, and Merck Canada. Other sponsors included Eurostyle Fashion, Novartis, Otis Grant & Friends Foundation and another 20 year contributor, the City of Pointe- Claire. The

Air Canada Foundation and the Montreal Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel helped carry on a yearly tradition by graciously donating prizes for the raffle draw to raise funds during the evening. Organizing Committee Co-Chairs - Victoria D’Elia, Chief Financial Officer, Eurostyle Fashion and Linda Ward O’Farrell, President, Ward O’Farrell Consultants Inc. mention that “It takes a dedicated team to organize the largest fundraising event benefitting the Residence. We would like to thank the committee, a wonderful group of volunteers and staff who made organizing the 20th edition of the Ball lots of fun, but also a resounding success.” About the West Island Palliative Care Residence The West Island Palliative Care Residence is an independent, non-profit organization that provides services free of charge to patients and their families. The Residence receives one-third of its annual operational budget from the Quebec government and relies on community support and fundraising activities to raise the balance of more than 3.5 million dollars each year. With its 23 beds, the Residence is the largest freestanding palliative care facility in Canada and is recognized as a leader in its field. In 2018, the Residence embarked on a fundraising campaign to support two new initiatives to raise the relevance and appeal of the Residence by consolidating its two sites into a single, cost-efficient facility and launching its new branch, the Montreal Institute for Palliative Care. 11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

n response to a news article published on February 1st, 2019, describing the situation of homeless people seeking refuge at an underpass by the Lachine Canal,AJOI wishes to reiterate the urgent need of investment in the development of shelter & housing resources in Montreal's outlying neighbourhoods. Since 2010, the nonprofit organization AJOI has deplored the lack of shelter & housing resources available in the West Island of Montreal. AJOI is an organization whose mission is to establish and maintain outreach intervention services for youth at risk or in difficulty in the West Island. In 2014, the organization conducted a survey in collaboration with the City of Montreal and the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) which focused on the residential instability of West Island youth. The results of this study confirmed the phenomenon and brought to light the

prevalence of hidden homelessness in the West Island. In September 2018, an article by the Journal Metro also reported on the issue of homelessness in outlying neighbourhoods where the borough Mayor of Lachine, Maja Vodanovic, affirmed working closely with intervention workers in order to help individuals who are in the streets and in need. The Réseau d’Aide aux Personnes Seules et Itinérantes à Montréal (RAPSIM) added that "people who find themselves in situations of homelessness in the West Island are forced to move to more central areas. It only isolates them further and has them leave behind all that they know". Tristan (fictitious name) is one of the young adults that AJOI helps on a daily basis. Although recently having lost his job and his apartment, he still refuses when his outreach worker suggests accompanying him to a downtown resource. A few

months ago he spent the night in a downtown shelter and was traumatized by the event. He prefers to couchsurf at the

homes of his friends and acquaintances until he has exhausted all of his options and networks. After a grueling wait, his outreach worker manages to find him a room for the night, knowing this is only a temporary solution. Tristan is in survival mode and will find it very difficult to mobilize himself to find a job when his focus is simply on surviving until tomorrow.Tristan

is not alone. Hundreds of vulnerable people live in precarious situations of residential instability without options of emergency shelter/housing in their communities. The lack of resources in outlying neighbourhoods contributes to the overcrowding of downtown resources. The lack of investment in outlying areas leads to the funnelling of vulnerable populations towards central areas of downtown. Unfortunately, the many requests for assistance that AJOI has made to the City of Montreal regarding homelessness have gone unanswered. With no existing resources dedicated to this mandate, AJOI created Ricochet (Hébergement / Homes) in 2017 - the first non-profit organization whose mission is to de-

velop housing resources for young adults living in situations of residential instability in the West Island. Fundraising is slow and project development takes time - without an investment from the city to obtain a business development agent, it is very difficult to move the project forward to make it a reality. Meanwhile, at risk and vulnerable people of the West Island are uprooted to the city center, having no place to call home and sleeping in conditions that put them further at risk. AJOI continues to demonstrate that the fight against homelessness in Montreal also involves the surrounding neighbourhoods. We will continue, on behalf of our community and the vulnerable young adults we help, to assert ourselves until we are heard.

The evening began with dignitaries being piped into the hall followed by the sashing of the 2019 Grand Marshal Sean Finn, Executive Vice-President of CN. This year's Chief Reviewing Officer is none other than Joey Elias, one of Montreal's hottest Stand-Up Comedians. Joey Elias has appeared in no less than 12 Just For Laughs Festivals and the 2004 and 2006 Just For Laughs Cross Canada Tour. In 2004, he traveled to Afghanistan for the first time to entertain Canadian troops. Joey has also appeared in his own Canadian National TV special "Comedy Now!" The 64th annual Queen Selection kicked off the Irish season festivities

The St. Patrick's Parade is an opportunity for everyone to be "Irish for a Day." Montrealers turn out in throngs for the annual rite of spring putting aside whatever else ails them. Inasmuch as the parade hearkens back to the Emerald Isle in recent

years marching bands and floats have reflected the Canadian cultural mosaic. Faces from around the globe can be "seen among the green" while both English and French commingle with the lively Irish tunes. The St. Paddy's Parade is an opportunity to

The Queen and Princesses were selected by seven independent judges through a threeround public speaking contest from a pool of participants of Irish descent aged 18 to 25. The Queen was awarded a trip for two to Ireland by Air Canada.

HAVE SOME FUN: Take out some playing cards or a game you can play alone or with friends and family. Listening to good music and dancing to some of your favorite tunes can also be of great benefit - and you could do it alone when nobody is watching! Being silly can do wonders for your mind, body and spirit. TAKE A VACATION: Not everyone can afford a trip down south to a warm, sunny location but if you can, 'beach therapy' can do wonders. EAT BETTER: Good news! Although eating healthy is always recommended, chocolate can help to improve your mood and offer some relief. But beware of treats like sugary candy because the relief is only temporary relief and could result increased symptoms. Given that an estimated one in four people are biologically effected by the 'Winter Blues' or SAD, perhaps leaving the science behind and following your own instincts once in a while wouldn't hurt. When the spring season seems too far away, maybe dipping into the peanut butter jar or reaching for that piece of cheesecake wouldn't be such a bad thing - and you could blame it on your biological clock.

he month of February is well upon us, with some of the coldest and dreariest days of the winter season. It has many singing the 'Winter Blues', while wistfully dreaming of spring to arrive faster than Canada's most famous groundhog Wiarton Willie would dictate. "I'm singing the blues, da-dum da-dum, the dark winter blues, da-dum dadum, it's got me unglued, da-dum da-dum, there's salt in my shoes, da-dum da-dum…" The holiday season is behind us, there are no more colorful lights hanging on trees to brighten the early nights, no more songs of cheer and 'goodwill to all men' looping on the radio or on our electronic devices - and instead of Christmas cards in the mail, the bills are pouring in. It could be very depressing. But it's not as bad for people who engage willingly in outdoor winter sports and activities or those who are able to travel south, towards warmer pastures for a couple of weeks or more. For others, like Willie the groundhog when he sees his shadow, they would like to head back into their burrow and nap for another six weeks. They dream not of sandy beaches, but of being able to take off their leg warmers and boots in exchange for shorts and sandals. CWAQ to ban religious cymbals and emojis

A

fter no debate in the province's Irrational Assembly this week, Premier Lego and his team of interlocking minifigures, unanimously voted to ban all religious cymbals and emojis - anywhere, any place and anytime. The only exceptions being the wooden cymbal hanging in the Assembly, because it really doesn't make a sound when played and therefore holds no real religious 'cymbal'ism - and the Jedi Helmet emoji (Star Wars), because Premier Lego believes the force is with him. Few details were given on how all this will be monitored, but rumours point to province-wide 'Religious Investigator' units - the ORCE (Office de la religion cymbal emoji). In the meantime, sources say banned cymbals will include any cymbal 'attached to a religious act or musical production' - such as the high-hats or crash cymbals used in the film Jesus Christ Superstar or those referred to in Psalm 150:5 'Praise him on the loud cymbals: praise him on the high sounding cymbals'. Modern day finger-symbols that have their origins in the ancient Jewish Tribe of Levi will not be tolerated and Klezmer bands will be monitored carefully. Use of cymbals by those of Islamic faith,

have not yet been identified, but a task force will be appointed to investigate the realm of possibility. It is unclear what other cymbals will be considered as 'attached to a religious act or musical production', but several CWAQ interlocking minifigures have raised concerns about the Tibetan Buddhist gong

looking too much like a one-sided cymbal. As for the other known major religions such as Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism - there seems to be some Confucianism about them. Religious emojis will certainly be a little harder to identify, as there are often small and hard to see in some platforms - but a partial list leaked to the media might have some smiley faces frowning. The banned images identified so far include: Christian religious emojis such as

the Smiling Face with a Halo, Folded Hands in Prayer, any with a Father, Son or Holy Ghost - as well as Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph the RedNose Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Little Drummer Boys, Easter Bunnies and Judas Priest Hats. Jewish emoji images listed so far include Matzah, Matzah Balls, Potato Latkes, Chicken Soup Bowls, Menorahs (candle holders with 7 to 9 branches), Gefilte Fish, Bagels with Cream Cheese and Lox, and Bubby Faces that say 'Oy Vey'. Other images falling under the category of banned emoji include, but not limited to: Yin, Yang and Om symbols, Praying Mantis, Mages,Woman or Man in Lotus Position, Woman or Man Levitating, Locusts involved in any Plagues, as well as Gandalf, Merlin and Professor Albus Dumbledore wizards. The proposed bans are expected to be challenged in court, but Premier Lego has already stated that he will put on his Jedi Helmet and use the Notwithstanding/sitting/leaning clause if necessary. *Bonnie's Babble is a satire and humour column, intended to evoke laughter. mazon is apparently considering an investment of close to $1 Billion in Quebec, according to La Presse newspaper who obtained a document from the provincial government through an access to information request. The details are unclear as the document was heavily edited, but it indicates the investment would be made over a 10 year period and expected to be channeled through one of its Amazon Web Services cloud divisions, which opened one of its data centres in December of 2016 in the Montreal region. Part of the money would be used for the hiring of executive staff, managers, accountants and specialized legal and administrative staff. Last year, Montreal had been considered among several cities to be home to Amazon's second headquarters, but it lost out after a one year search to New York City. It is possible Montreal was eliminated because they already had other poten-

15% of Canadians managed to tuck away more than $10,000 in 2018, but one quarter didn't save a penny

A

ccording to a report released today by BMO, Canadians are in two camps when it comes to saving. One quarter did not put away any savings in 2018, but 15 per cent saved more than $10,000. Canadians are optimistic in 2019, with over half indicating that they are planning to save. The report, conducted by Pollara, revealed: When it comes to this year's savings plan, half definitely plan to put savings aside (52 per cent), with three in ten (31 per cent) planning to save up to $10,000. One in ten believe they will not be able to save anything this year (12 per cent), while more than a third are unsure of how much they can save (36 per cent). However, there are some Canadians that have a good chunk nestled away, with 29 per cent of those surveyed claiming to have more than $100,000 saved. There are some barriers

standing in the way of Canadians hitting their savings goals: 67 per cent of Canadians are stretching themselves too thin on expenses to be able to save; nearly half (45 per cent) are playing catch-up and paying down debt; and, for millennial Canadians, 37 per cent of them cite social pressures as a barrier towards being able to save. According to BMO Economics, Canadian household credit burdens unexpectedly crept higher in the third quarter of 2018, with the key debtto-disposable income ratio climbing to a near record high of 173.8 per cent. Meanwhile, with interest rates on the rise, credit payments are now starting to take a chunky bite out of paycheques. The household debt service ratio (interest and principal as a share of disposable income) has jumped to 14.5 per cent, with 7.22 per cent of income being put toward interest payments – the most in seven years.

However, debt burdens are also alleviating, with household credit slowing. "Household credit is now rising the least in 35 years, and with consumers expected to spend at the slowest rate in a decade in 2019 due to higher interest rates and tougher mortgage rules, the debt ratio should stabilize if not fall modestly," noted Sal Guatieri, Senior Economist, BMO Capital Markets. "There's no better time to tighten the fis-

cal purse strings than when interest rates are on the rise." "The current environment is putting some pressure on Canadians' finances, making it more difficult for them to put a greater emphasis on regular saving," said Carola Corti, Managing Director, Everyday Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal. "However, it is encouraging to know that Canadians are coming into 2019 with saving top of mind – it's

critically important to prioritize putting money aside, even in smaller amounts. One of the best places to start is with a comprehensive plan that takes into account income and expenses, as well as long and short term goals. Once that plan is in place, it will be much easier for Canadians to begin building momentum as it relates to household savings." Battle of the piggybank: short-term vs.

long-term savers The study also looked at how Canadians want to use their savings. While some Canadians are looking to tap into savings in the coming year, others have a longer-term horizon: For Canadians that are looking to dip into savings this year, 47 per cent are looking to use their savings for a trip or vacation, nearly 20 per cent need the money for home renovations, and 15 per cent are saving for seasonal activities like holidays or birthdays. For those that are trying to save for the longerterm, 36 per cent have their eyes turned towards retirement although 32 per cent don't think they are saving enough. Another 36 per cent are setting money aside for an emergency fund but, similarly, close to 40 per cent feel it's not sufficient. For Canadians that have taken on debt, 17 per cent are focused only on getting back to the black.

un Youth has been partnering with the police since its inception in 1954. Over the years, the organization developed multiple initiatives with police forces, starting with the Montreal Police Service (SPVM). One of these initiatives is Sun Youth’s Reward Program, through which anonymous donors provide sums of money in the hope of helping police forces solve cases of wanted criminals or missing persons. The program was created in 1991 following the brutal and unexplained murder of 82 year-old Ada Burns and one of Sun Youth’s donors wanting to help the police find her killer. Since the beginning of the program almost three decades ago, 105 rewards have been offered through Sun Youth in partnership with various police corps,

www.mtltimes.ca

including the SPVM, the Sûreté du Québec, the Laval Police and the Longueuil Police. The reach of Sun Youth’s Reward Program goes even beyond the provincial boundaries, the organization having signed an agreement with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in 2014 to act as the manager of rewards for this police service. Since 1991, 27 cases in which rewards were offered were solved, which proves the usefulness of the program for investigators (a success rate of 26%). While Sun Youth manages the money for these rewards, they are first requested and approved by the police force in charge of the investigation. They are offered for a limited period of time after which, as decided by the donor, they are renewed,

or the funds given back to the donor or used in other crime prevention activities like in providing assistance to victims of criminal acts in particular. In all cases Sun Youth is the sole manager of these rewards and acts as an intermediary between the anonymous donor and the police force in charge of each investigation. Investigators are the ones who decide whether it is appropriate or not to grant a reward as well as the amount to be paid. At present time 12 reward offers are active with the latest one being released concerning the murder of Yves Cyr whose remains were found in June 2016 after having gone missing in December 2015 (see photo). 7 cases are or missing people and the remaining 5 concern wanted criminals.

What to make for super... Wine & Dining

By Chef Peter Webster of Bouquet Garni Catering

I

t is the age old question. We ask it every night and most times there is an easy response. However, there are times when the answer doesn’t come easy – even for a professional chef! Take last night for instance. I went freezer diving to see what inspiration I could come up with. I found some chicken breasts and some bacon. Bacon is one of my favourite things so I threw together a couple of ingredients and I had a wonderful dinner of chicken with a tossed salad and a side of rice. Here is what I did and the quantities are estimated. Having an exact amount of any one ingredient is not really important – it is the technique that counts. Ingredients: 1 lb of bacon, chopped into 1/2 “dice 10 chicken breasts (that’s what I had on hand) 1 tbsp Cajun spice 2 onions, roughly chopped 3 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped 2 packages of white mush-

50

rooms, washed and quartered 1 cup sour cream 1/2 cup 35% cream Jus from cooked chicken breasts Salt and pepper to taste Cook the bacon in a large frying pan until crisp. Using a sieve, drain the bacon and save the drippings in a bowl. Using 4tbsp bacon drippings, place half of the chicken breasts in the pan (folding the thin side of the breast under to achieve a uniform thickness of the breast), sprinkle with Cajun spice and brown on the bottom. Flip the breast and brown the top side, sprinkle again with Cajun spice. Place the breasts in an ovenable pan at 300º and continue cooking the rest of the

breasts, and place them in the oven also. Heat 3 tbsp of the bacon dripping and sauté the onions for two minutes until soft and fragrant. Add in the mushrooms and garlic, sprinkle with salt and pepper and stir until the mushrooms release their water. When most of the moisture has evaporated, stir in the sour cream and cream. Add in some of the chicken jus from the chicken in the oven, to thin the sauce if necessary. To serve, slice the breast into 4 or 5 slices and ladle the sauce on top. My daughter had two servings of the chicken but left out the mushrooms!

Finding the right senior community for a loved one with alzheimer’s or Dementia Sponsored

T

By Matt Del Vecchio mtltimes.ca

he heartbreaking effects of Alzheimer’s or dementia can be challenging for both the individual and their respective caregivers. Eventually, families have little choice but to adapt to their loved one’s failing condition and they must try to find the best solutions for them. One option is to approach your local CLSC and pursue the route of the public system by placing your loved one into long term care. Although long term care nursing homes in the public system are doing the best they can with limited resources, some families choose to go the private route to avoid long waiting lists; to have the luxury of selecting a senior residence of their choice as opposed to the public selection; and to offer their loved one premium levels of care. Here are some helpful hints and recommendations to find the ideal private senior community for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Community Specialized for Alzheimer’s or Dementia Choose a retirement home or senior community that

specializes in “memory care”. Memory care goes beyond what is traditionally offered in an autonomous or assisted living setting. Often these communities incorporate design elements that research has shown to lower stress in individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia. These elements include increased natural lighting, memory boxes outside the room and a neighborhood design that allows for safe wandering. Amenities in a memory care community The amenities found at a memory care community may not be as glamorous as those found in an independent living or assisted living community. This is done by design rather than oversight. Research has shown that seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia can become easily stressed and disoriented, thereby memory care communities are designed to create a relaxing atmosphere and environment. Security in memory care communities Because an estimated six in 10 people with Alzheimer’s will wander, communities are designed to minimize the risk of leaving or elopement, whether employing security alarms on doors or performing more frequent safety

checks. Specialized Activities Activities are specially designed around a resident’s past interests so they may reconnect with their memories. Art classes, music and games are usually offered, along with exercise classes. Some communities may also provide escorted outings. At a memory care community, staff typically

handle all the responsibilities of life—from housekeeping and laundry to meal preparation and transportation.Assistance with activities of daily living is also a standard service offering. your loved one.Touring at different times of the day is recommended, as this way you can view residents and staff throughout the day, rather than just at lunch or during activities Once you have selected a community, try to take measures for a smooth transition. One of these steps could be as simple as having your loved

one’s room already decorated with items or belongings that are familiar to them. This will also help with the transition and reduce the stress of moving. Feel free to seek out or ask for professional services from advisors specializing in senior care. They can offer added insight and experience during this challenging transition period. Settle for More by Megyn Kelly Book review

O

n August 6, 2015, the day of the fateful Republican presidential candidates’ debate in Cleveland in which Megyn Kelly’s question to Donald Trump about his treatment of women would make her a household name, there was one major preoccupation the Fox News host would have before the debate even started. That was thanks to a sudden case of a stomach virus she contracted just hours before the live debate went on the air, which made her quite violently ill and almost put her out of commission. It got to the point where Kelly was given a blanket to put around her legs while she was at her seat on the debate stage during the broadcast, as well as an empty wastebasket placed at her feet, in the event she was overcome with nausea, and had to vomit on live TV (with her mic conveniently cut off and the cameras turned away from her). Yet, through the illness and controversial question to Trump, Kelly survived the stormy night in Cleveland, not to mention the other storms that would come her way as a result of that question. And when it comes to survival, both personal and professional, Megyn Kelly is someone who knows how to weather them. As she writes in the prologue of her best-selling memoir Settle for More: “I was raised with strong values, and had spent much of my life to that point seeing my character tested. I was viciously bullied in middle school. My father died when I was a teenager. As a lawyer, I worked eighteen-hour days immersed in acrimony. As a cub reporter, I was targeted by a violent stalker. Once I became a well-known news anchor, I accepted without complaint the scrutiny that comes with that role. I’d also navigated my way through plenty of sexism from powerful men. So I suppose I was as prepared as anyone could be to spend the 2016 election being targeted by the likely Republican nominee.” That paragraph basically sums up the personal story that Kelly conveys in her book. Without trying to elicit a feeling of pity from the reader, she recounts how she managed to work her way up the ladder to a great degree success in two mostly male-dominated career fields – law and news media – through a great deal of struggle and hard 18

work, yet at the same time deflecting the many slings and arrows that were thrown at her. There are plenty of stories offered in the book that give the reader an unblemished portrait of how Megyn Kelly became the multi-faceted individual that has drawn so many millions of viewers every night to watch “The Kelly File” on Fox News (and later this year, to her new broadcasts for NBC News, which the move was officially announced last month).

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

Perhaps the most compelling part of the book – and is a vivid example of Kelly’s strength and resilience in times of adversity – is the portion towards the end of the book that chronicles her battles with President Donald Trump before and during his run for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. “I enjoyed interviewing him,” Kelly admits about his first two appearances on “The Kelly File” before his candidacy. “He was fun to watch, irreverent, and you never knew what he was going to say.” Then in early 2015, before he announced his presidential run, Trump launched a campaign to charm and court Kelly, with constant phone calls, personal notes, highly complementary tweets, and even an offer to pick up the tab when she spent a weekend with some old friends at the Trump Soho Hotel in New York City (an offered that she vehemently refused). Kelly then realized Trump’s motivation behind this “campaign”. It became quite evident during an interview she did with Trump for a Kelly File broadcast just before he announced his candidacy, in which he tried to convince her to ask him about some less than reliable polls that were favourable to him, instead of the series of reputable polls that stated he was trailing behind some other Republican candidates (which she flatly refused to do). And following the pre-taped interview, he tried to ma-

nipulate her to air the interview intact and unedited (which she also refused to do). These two examples of Kelly sticking to her guns for the sake of journalistic ethics created a divide between her and Trump, which came to a head with her asking Trump the question about his treatment of women at the debate in Cleveland. Kelly is to be given a great deal of respect for her courage in how she handled the swift firestorm that greeted her after the debate, which was sparked mainly by the series of hateful tweets Trump posted that questioned her abilities as a journalist and attacked her personally as well. Her strong will, courage and determination in the face of these attacks (which could have easily toppled any individual both physically and emotionally) is a true testament to the inner strength she has built for herself through all the difficulties she faced throughout her life. As a result, a somewhat reconciliation was established between the two (which also ended up with an interview with him on a year-end TV special Kelly was hosting) that was dubbed the “Trump Tower Accords”. “Some described me as ‘fearless’ throughout these events,” Kelly reflects in the book. “But I wasn’t. I was fearful at times – for my safety and that of my family. For what the attacks might mean to my career, my relationship with my viewers, and some of my professional relationships. And yet I knew I had a job to do. And doing it felt empowering. In showing up at Trump Tower that day and later interviewing him for my special, I was taking control of my life, refusing to accept the status quo. Fear did come, but so did courage. If you can muster courage in the face of fear, you become more confident. You become tougher.” So whether you agree or not with Megyn Kelly’s viewpoints, or her tough, sometimes confrontational interview style (which ratchets up several notches if the interviewee doesn’t get their facts straight), her book Settle for More will inform you, enlighten you and most importantly, inspire you. She is someone who started with less, and by settling for more, she boldly faced many struggles and obstacles, and as a result, achieved many of her goals, both professionally and personally.
