this time without much protest. However, when former Mayor Gerard Tremblay (does anyone remember him?) tried to give the name of the now forgotten and for many – mediocre– politician, to the iconic Avenue du Parc, a furious community prevented him from perpetrating that urban crime. However, last week the decision by Mayor Valerie Plante to remove the name Amherst from that street in the east end of downtown was met with a rare case of unanimity approving a change that would erase from the map of Montreal the name of Jeffery Amherst. The British general commanded his country's forces during the colonial wars in 18th century North America, and durBy Sergio Martinez ing the rebellion led by chief Pontiac (1763-1764), mtltimes.ca promoted the use of a now given to someone kind of biological warfare else. In all justice, however, the method of infecting the aboriginals with smallpox was first used by Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes in Mexico, who had introduced an infected slave among the Aztecs two centuries earlier. This action precipitated the fall of the Aztec empire to the Spaniards. No question then, Amherst, an extreme exponent of European colo-

nial practices, wouldn't have many defenders today, Amherst Street is gone, welcome Atateken Street. The Mayor announced the new name in the company of the Chief of the Assembly of First Nations for Quebec and Labrador, Ghislain Picard, and the grand chiefs of the two Mohawks territories in the Montreal area: Joe Norton of Kahnawake and Serge Otsi Simon, of Kanesatake. The new name of the street is taken from the kanien'kéha (Mohawk) language and may be translated as fraternity

and an expression of equality between peoples. "I am moved to see us arrive together to make this gesture. Replacing a Montreal toponym that has been criticized for many years by a unifying name that invites peace and sharing between Aboriginal and non-native cultures, embodies the spirit of Montreal in its reconciliation program" said Mayor Plante during the ceremony. "Now that Amherst St. has a new name the spirit of our people, the spirit of our ancestors can rest in peace," said Picard for his

part. For Montreal, it is a new page that has turned in a long process aimed at reconciliation while it is also a reminder that the city stands on unceded territory ("Aboriginal Title has neither been surrendered nor acquired by the Crown" according to the First Nations' definition). But on that, Chief Simon was also clear: "(This) doesn't mean we're going to come in here and kick you out. It means you finally recognize that where you're standing isn't necessarily all yours – that it came at a price."

However, as part of this decree, boundaries for the special planning zone were established and, unfortunately, it is clear that the created map is completely incorrect in regards to the City of Dorval, notably for the following reasons: • The subdivision of flood zones is technically impossible. It shows straight-lined divisions or almost completely straight boundaries, which is totally illogical. • This map is supposed to rely on the floods that took place in 2017 and

hile Sun Youth had to say goodbye to one of its urban gardens when leaving its St-Urbain Street location, an opportunity presented itself with the move to the new 6700 Parc Avenue location with Université de Montréal’s MIL Campus where many ephemeral projects have emerged in the last 5 years thanks to some 30 different partners. Such is the case of Sun Youth’s ephemeral urban garden which was inaugurated on June 13th with the spreading of the soil on the ground by a group of volunteers. Two days later

Sun Youth also opened its Ville St-Laurent urban garden with once again the help of dedicated volunteers. Sun Youth would like to thank Université de Montréal for making ephemeral garden possible. The organization would also like to thank the Foresters Financial Group for their renewed financial support and salute the volunteer involvement of its members for making the Ville St-Laurent urban garden possible since 2014. This initiative alone helps Sun Youth feed over 10,000 families every year. Only last year close to 2900 lb of vegetables were harvested and dis-

tributed to the Sun Youth Food Bank users. In the last four years some 4300 lb of vegetables were harvested and distributed in that fashion. Those vegetables are also used to prepare the meals served to the organization’s Day Camp children and to its volunteers. The Sun Youth urban gardens are a great opportunity for seniors and children to develop new skills, gain useful knowledge and to be physically active. Those interested in volunteering to tend to the organization’s urban gardens can contact Sun Youth at bvt@sunyouthorg.com or at 514842-6822.

proposed Pink Line, a highlight of her electoral platform, but which so far has failed to gain much support from the provincial government. Of course, the Quebec City Mayor, Régis Labeaume, was pleased with the announcement as well: "I salute Valérie Plante's spectacular negotiating skills," Labeaume said and described the deal as "a step in the right direction." Dubé for his part remarked that the Montreal agreement with the province will also result in an improvement in the metro system, including the Blue Line connection to the light train (REM) currently under construction and the installation of protective barriers in some stations

which it will hand over to Quebec City 800 million dollars which the provincial capital wants to use for its projected tramway network whose cost is 3.3 billion dollars. In exchange, Montreal would get provincial support to build a tramway line linking Lachine with downtown. "It's a winning deal for Quebec City but also for Montreal," Mayor Valerie Plante said during a press conference held this Wednesday which was also attended by Quebec Transport Minister Chantal Rouleau and Treasury Board President Christian Dubé. Mayor Plante sees this tramway line as the western section of its

of the Orange Line to prevent suicides. Also enthusiastic with the announcement was the head of the STM, Phillippe Schnobb: "We're talking about projects that now are funded. Before today, these projects were just in the air," he said. The agreement also counted with the support of the federal government, François-Philippe Champagne, Infrastructure Minister in a communiqué indicated his gratitude to the Montreal Mayor and the Quebec Treasure Board Minister "for their efforts in reaching a solution" to the question of the transfer of funds. Since the announcement is still very fresh, there are no many details

about the next steps and when Lachine commuters will be able to ride the new tramways. There have been plans in the past, and probably some of them would be revived now that the funds will be available. In 2014, Michael Seth Wexler an urban planning graduate student at McGill University has come up with some ideas regarding a tramway line coming from downtown with a connection to the

Du Canal train station, and then running on Notre Dame and turning north at 32th Avenue. He had actually thought of such tramway as a connection to the Trudeau Airport, but since the REM will fulfil that purpose, a line ending in Lachine seems now more appropriate, and that is what the city has also projected. Very likely, the Lachine tramway may become the western por-

tion of the projected tramway line on the eastern part of Notre Dame St., an idea that has already been approved by the provincial government. The irony, particularly for older residents in Lachine, is that once the new tramway is built and running, for them, it would be like a time journey: the last streetcar connecting the city centre to Lachine ran in November 1954.

Le Cordon Restaurant a real treat + A new "Greek Festival" menu for summer! off and will feature traditional Greek fare, in addition to Canadian cuisine, for a value-added summer menu. I sampled a variety of dishes including the mouth-watering ribs with a side of crunchy creamy coleslaw and sweet potato fries along with three different kinds of pizza: a spicy but not too hot Mexican pizza with jalapeño chili peppers; and a hearty sausage pizza made especially for me.

The third option, a thincrusted vegetarian pizza made with fresh veggies, was the best I've ever had. The "Vegetarian Deluxe", made with a blend of parmesan and mozzarella cheeses, was topped with mounds of broccoli, mushrooms, onions, tender artichoke hearts, and ripe cherry tomatoes. You really can enjoy authentic vegetarian cuisine at this meat lovers bistro! Unlike many restaurants, Le Cordon offers a variety of

substantial vegetarian dishes along with traditional meat-based dishes, sandwiches, and burger platters. "Must Try" dishes include Le Cordon Lasagna made from a blend of meat and Béchamel sauces, Seafood and/or Shrimp Linguini, and the house specialty "Le Cordon" Pizza, a meaty concoction made with ground beef, Italian sausage, and mozzarella cheese. This is a great place to

eat and unwind at the intersection of Notre Dame Street in Lachine and Dollard Avenue in LaSalle. With more than 50 eclectic and delicious items on the menu, Le Cordon offers something for every palette at reasonable prices that won't hurt your wallet. It is all affordably priced with a full alcohol license for restaurant and bar. For owner Tony Zoitakis it is all about the quality of the food which brings satisfied customers back time and again. "Everything is homemade from the sauces to the pizza dough," he says. The place is bustling at lunchtime Monday to Friday and at night it's a good bet Habs fans are watching the hockey game on the large TV screen. Sheamu butter on the menu

By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

ou could butter your toast with our Sheamu, it is so pure and so full of goodness. But we do sell it for the skin. Lucky skin, all those omegas and vitamin E. Shea is called the Karite nut, native to Africa. It has been known for centuries as a beautiful skin treatment. Besides doing all of the wonderful things like moisturizing, nourishing, mending foot cracks, enhancing the hair, smoothing the cuticles, dryness, and itching, and soothing many more skin issues, Shea has always been a part of natural body care. Instead of selling pure shea alone, we blended it with emu oil, called Sheamu Butter. An enhancement marvel. Allergy Season is upon us

Did you know that a little shea butter can help clear nasal congestion? If you have seasonal allergies and ‘cannot breathe’ this is a rather uncomfortable predicament. Common solutions include the application of petroleum jelly into the nostril or the use a nasal decongestant. While the jelly has been around for over 100 years it does not mean it is a healthy

12

www.mtltimes.ca

option. It is petroleum after all. Opting for a nasal decongestant can be risky. When I was 17 years old, way back in the 60’s and suffering with nasal congestion, I became addicted to Otrivin. I remember walking to the bus stop, patting my pockets for my handy nasal spritz and coming up empty. Too late to go back. “How would I breathe?” The entire scenario transported me into another sphere. “Was I dependant on nasal spray?” Back then, answers were not a click away, so I had to rely on texts. Books, lest we forget. I discovered that one’s nasal passages could become dependent on a nasal spray. I was terrified at the thought of being married to Otrivin. So, I chose cold turkey. I suffered for close to a week until my nose decided to be its normal self. Had I known about shea, it would have been the first on my ‘to do’ list. Studies have shown that if you apply a few grams of shea directly into the nostril using an index finger, the passages clear with a minute or two and can stay clear for 5-8 hours. If you try our butter, you have the benefit of the added emu oil. We also offer a choice of a butter blend for Vegan or Vegetarian: Shargan Butter. It has pure argan oil from Mo-

rocco instead of the emu. If you have ever purchased pure shea on its own, you have experienced its qualities. Natural, unrefined, and off white in colour with a slightly nutty smell. Natural shea does not spread as easily as a cream. True shea is a little firmer and requires the loving warmth of your hands to melt in into the skin. If this does not sound familiar, you may have purchased the more common refined shea. ‘Refinement’ whitens the shea and removes the natural nutty smell, most often replaced with synthetic fragrances and added preservatives. The refined shea is not as good a choice. When you are looking over your skin care menu, opting for real Shea is always an excellent selection. As mentioned we offer the combo blend. You might remember an article from some time ago when we wrote about ‘Sheamu to the Foot Rescue’. A good read, especially if your feet are of interest. Either way, remember shea. reason may be food intolerance. I talked last week about food intolerance. It is a negative reaction to certain foods that can sabotage your health by triggering inflammation and causing a host of nasty symptoms. Unlike food allergies that are acute and severe, food intolerances can be difficult to pinpoint. If someone with a peanut allergy eats peanuts, she/he can go into anaphylactic shock and immediately need medical attention — this type of reaction is acute and severe. Someone with a food intolerance, on the other hand, will experience subtle symptoms By Donna Byrne that can worsen over time. mtltimes.ca Food intolerances fire riencing a fatigue, achiness up your immune system and bloating? one. Different people react to different foods. Food intolerances can trigger a leaky gut, immune reactions and inflammation, and they can also stall fast fat loss. Food intolerances trigger numerous symptoms. If you recognize even one of these symptoms, you could be suffering from a food intolerance. Digestive trouble – bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, sleep issues – fatigue, insomnia, restlessness, waking during the night, congestion, sneezing and coughing, muscle aches and joint pain, dark circles under your eyes, dull, lifeless hair, skin problems, including acne and rosacea, mood problems – lack of focus, brain fog, depression, anxiety or irritability, poor or unsteady energy,

premature aging, weight gain or inability to lose weight. This is a long list and so many of us probably experience some of these symptoms and have no idea to what they are related. Because food intolerances trigger an immune reaction, they can also cause inflammation. Chronic inflammation is connected to just about every disease on the planet, from dementia to cancer. Inflammation also makes fat loss impossible. So what do we do about it? Like most of what I have been talking about for years is “We must take charge of our health”. To do this we have to know our individual needs as we can determine by doing the Micronutrient blood testing. This test lets us

know what deficiencies we have and how to replenish them. Next we can test for food intolerances. This is a laboratory test looking at a long list of possibilities to zero in on what we are intolerant to, so that we can eliminate them. Next we can decrease inflammation caused by these intolerances by receiving our Magnetic Resonance Therapy. To summarize: 1. Decrease inflammation for disease prevention and to allow our bodies to do their job…be strong and healthy. 2. Know what our bodies need and replace deficiencies and 3.Know what our bodies are intolerant of and eliminate them. This all sounds complicated but the more we

learn and understand our own specific needs the more this review and self examination becomes a way of life. Understanding that we are all different and that the traditional health care approach of “same old, same old” and “one size fits all” is not a good fit anymore. As well we don’t want to wait to be sick. We want to promote health. To help us learn and understand our relationship with health there will be a series of workshops at Clinique PsySanté on Saint Jean’s Blvd. starting September 24th. The first workshop called “The Heart and Soul of Self Care” will give you tools to empower and educate yourself in order to live a healthier, happier life. Going forward the whole series of workshops will be of great benefit to everyone. Call for information. (514) 620-3535. Stay tuned…… .. Comments, ideas, suggestions are welcome. A taste of Spain - Salmorejo and Rose Garnacha

Besides an enriching wine learning experience about Garnacha/Grenache, I was lucky to quickly reconnect with Spanish gastronomy. First Taste of a Spanish Summer: Garnacha rose and Salmorejo Spain is the second largest rose producer in the world after Italy and consumes roughly about 10% of their domestic production. The Spanish consumption is highly seasonal and occurs predominantly during the summer season. In my mind, the idea of an Spanish summer is represented by copious quantities of rose wine and tomato based dishes. The arid lands of Spain’s historic Kingdom of Aragon are currently producing some of the world ́s best rosé wines. The protagonist grape is Grenache noir, which traditionally has been the variety used to make these wines. Another great feature, the episodes are all around 5 minutes and you get to see the results literally 1 week after completion on YouTube. When you have neglected a space in your home for awhile, the task becomes daunting. With a little planning and inspiration anything is possible. Watching Scott’s House Call will give you insights and ideas from building
