VERDUN BEACH G iven the extreme heat waves Montrealers experienced last summer, with at least 66 people having died from heatrelated complications and the potential for more summers like it the expected opening of a new beach in Verdun could very well prove to be a welcome respite. Last November 2018, the Borough of Verdun finally received federal and provincial authorization to move forward with the brand-new beach that will be located in Arthur-Therrien Park, behind the

Verdun Auditorium. It was actually supposed to be open in the summer of 2017 as part of Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations, but was delayed due to disputes over the location, rising costs and opposition from environmentalists over concerns it would disrupt the fragile ecosystem located in the wetlands nearby. Many residents are also worried about the increase in traffic and noise. Nonetheless, contractors have been working hard to make it happen, from smoothing out and correcting the

depth of the river in front of the beach to make it safe, to temporarily moving the bike path in the area while the work is being done, as well as planting trees. The waterfront area in Verdun has been a popular place for residents and visitors from other parts of the city who like to walk or jog for exercise, or simply seek a place to relax and the planned changes should enhance the experience. Other plans for the beach include wooded areas, cascading gardens, a park and new

bike path. There will also be slides integrated into the slope down to the river and a sandy beach for swimming and lazing about, as well as other recreational activities. A big plus, and very important aspect to the beach, is that the shoreline will be accessible to people in wheelchairs, 'with paths woven through a grassy, landscaped space where visitors can relax and gaze at the water'. Whether it will be open on time, or at least before the first heat wave kicks in, remains to be seen.

to the Canadian Grand Prix renewal agreement in order to hold it Montreal from 2015 to 2029. Mayor Valerie Plante announced an investment of an estimated $59.9 million ($41 million from the city and $18 million from the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing) towards a project that would not only replace the aged paddocks and increase the seating capacity in the boxes from 1800 seats to 5,000, but also include the installation of pile foundations to minimize the impacts on cyclists and allow other activities to take place at the park during the event. Not only is the project now over budget, which should come as no surprise to most people - but the upgrades and renova-

tions that were expected to be completed by May of 2019 are behind schedule. With the Grand Prix less than a month away, many are wondering if it will be ready on time. According to a May 8th report from grandprix.com, 'construction was delayed when unsatisfactory work was done on the paddock building roof'. City Hall maintains the work will completed in time for the race, but the new building is still under construction and most of the windows are not yet even installed - leaving reason for skepticism. Mayor Plante is expected to hold a press conference this Wednesday May 15th. The Montreal Grand Prix takes place from June 7th to 9th. May 18, 2019 •

t is one of the iconic streets in the downtown area, it links the Mount Royal in the north, with the old quarter of the city. Peel St. was the prestigious address for elegant townhouses and mansions in its Golden Square Mile section where there are now some of McGill buildings. Below Sherbrooke, it has been a vibrant commercial and corporate centre, while below St. Antoine due to its proximity to the port, Peel St. was home to important industries. At one point, that section of the street, then known as Windsor St. (south of Notre Dame was known as Colborne St.), was also the site of a CN cargo rail terminal. Peel, named after the then British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, was officially inaugurated on August 23, 1854, and today it still keeps much of its functional diversity, except for the industrial segment which has given way to new residential developments in Griffintown. These days, however, Peel St. is the focus of attention by local residents, merchants, and anyone interested in urban issues. The City of Montreal held a se• May 18, 2019

ries of consultations regarding future plans for the popular artery, in particular, its most central section between Sherbrooke and René Levesque. The consultation, which took place at Espacio Mexico, one of the cultural

institutions located in the street, was well attended: merchants somewhat worried about how the proposed changes may impact their businesses, residents, and others with interest in the future of the city. The city presented three

different scenarios for that central section of Peel St. all of them sharing some common features: its transformation into a oneway street, from south to north between René Levesque and Sherbrooke (a change everybody agreed upon: the road is too narrow and in fact the new plan would make it even narrower), a more pedestrian-friendly design, meaning wider sidewalks, and the elimination of parking spaces. The first scenario contemplates two bike paths, wider sidewalks, but no space for terraces (not good, restaurant owners immediately decried). The second scenario proposes only one bike path (oneway, southbound), wider sidewalks, space for terraces. The third scenario will have no bike paths, more extensive walkways, and space for terraces. To make up for the bike paths lost in scenarios 2 and 3 (only in the section between Sherbrooke and Dorchester Sq.) a northbound bike path will be installed on Mansfield St. (in case of Scenario 2) and two bike paths (northbound and southbound) will go on Mansfield St. Some people proposed that if scenarios 1 or 2 were adopted, the bike paths be seasonal. The discussion was conducted in groups which presented their conclu-

Free Report Reveals How to Avoid Getting Stuck Owning Two Homes

MONTREAL - West Island - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate

Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you'll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled "How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes". sions at the end of the meeting: all agreed that the third scenario was the best, or as someone put it "the least bad" since indeed the audience, although in favour of some of the changes, was not much impressed by their inevitable consequences. One primary concern was how long the renovations will take considering that when such significant works have been done (i.e. on St. Laurent Blvd., Bishop St., and St. Denis St.) the inconveniences to merchants and residents

have been considerable. On the positive side, the city seems to be listening and, we all hope, it will take into account the citizens' concerns. We all agreed that some changes will certainly improve the area (brighter LED lighting on sidewalks will be installed, trees will be planted, efforts will be made to bring activities to the revamped street), after all Peel is one of the most visited streets, and we would all like it to be a beautiful, inclusive, and well-kept area.

City Stamp, Canada's biggest philatelic dealer

ontreal-based City Stamp is the largest philatelic (stamp) dealer in Canada. Founded by Robert Cooperman some 35 years ago when he was a teenager, the company has an office on Ste-Catherine Street W, but today does most of its business online, both buying and selling stamps.

“Overall, we might buy or sell 15,000 items annually. Our business focuses on obtaining and selling the top end of the stamp market.” “We offer a unique opportunity to collectors to have a supplier with a vast and second-to-none inventory of the rarest stamps from Canada, North America, the British Commonwealth, and in many cases, the entire world. At the same time, our buying capabilities are equally as strong. No collection is too large for us not to purchase outright with immediate payment.” “We are always looking to buy the most soughtafter rarities from all countries. We are known to offer very fair market value.” Online sales have continued to grow for City By John Symon Stamp, now representing 70 percent of sales. Dorval REM Tunnel extension would service 200,000 passengers

Aore than 200,000 people will have direct access to the Dorval intermodal station if the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) tunnel is extended by a mere 700 metres to create a link with the railway stations and bus terminal adjacent to the Montreal-Trudeau Airport. An independent study conducted at the request of the City of Dorval concluded that it is “essential to build this short extension for the benefit of the REM, the airport, the residents of Dorval and Lachine, VIA Rail, Montreal Transit (STM) and exo passengers, and for the metropolitan population in general.”

the airport and downtown. Transport Canada policies now encourage the planning of intermodal stations to improve road traffic and to promote active and public transportation and sustainable development. The Government of Quebec is also in favour of such initiatives. A real transit hub Just over half a kilometre in length, this extension would make it possible to create a true public transit hub providing direct access to the REM and to the Montreal subway network for the 100,000 people who live near the airport – access that is not possible with the single REM station in the airport terminal. The new intermodal station, along with the VIA

Rail and Exo train stations and adjacent Montreal Transit terminal, would provide direct access to the REM for the 40,000 public transit users who pass through this area on a daily basis – not to mention the airport’s 55,000 passengers and its 30,000 employees, and the 150,000 drivers who use the Dorval Circle every day. "This connection with the stations has always been part of the plan. However, routing the REM to the north rather than the south will prevent passengers from accessing these stations unless this short extension is built. All airports around the world now focus on providing transport interconnections for more efficient movement

of people. We need to do the same in Montreal,” said Mayor Rouleau. He also pointed out that failure to build this extension as part of the REM project would make absolutely no sense. “Ending the REM under the airport makes it impossible to create an interconnected public transit and airport network and prevents access for people who live near the REM station, while construction of the 700metre extension would achieve precisely the opposite result. A real travel hub would be created at the airport, as is the case at most large-city airports where one can easily transfer from airplanes to trains, buses or subways,” said Mayor Rouleau in conclusion.

The REM would see an additional 3,600 people pass through this station every day, and users would be able to shorten their travel time by 12 to 58 minutes. “All stakeholders are in favour of this undertaking, including the directors of Aéroports de Montréal, VIA Rail, CDPQ Infra, the municipalities and adjacent Montreal boroughs, as well as the surrounding population. This is a planning oversight that must be addressed. We have here an opportunity to act before the work begins!” stated Dorval Mayor Edgar Rouleau. Hamburger Bliss!

I

t’s barbecue season again! One of my favourite meals on the bbq is the hamburger. I normally cook up some bacon until crispy and let it drain. In the drippings, I sauté up some diced onion, garlic and fresh mushrooms. I combine all these ingredients with the lean ground beef, add some Montreal steak spice and a dollop of my homemade barbecue sauce and I make an incredible hamburger patty! Placed inside a hamburger bun with a little texture (no air filled white bread buns for me) and I have a meal worth drooling over. My good friend, Dave Fisher, at CJAD, wanted to know what I would cook up to begin the new barbecue season. What came to mind is an old favourite I discovered during my stay in Calgary. A hamburger emporium offered a wide array of hamburgers including what would become an institution at home. It was mentioned on their menu with a byline that read “don’t laugh until you try it!”. It was called the Peanut Butter Bacon Burger. Now I will say to you, don’t laugh until YOU try it. Afterall, how can you go wrong eating something with peanut but-

ter and bacon – step outside the box, you may just discover a new favourite! Ingredients • 2 lbs lean ground beef • 2 tbsp Montreal steak spice • 1 lb bacon, cut into 2” strips and cooked, drained and kept warm peanut butter • 6 buns, preferable onion buns, Kaiser rolls etc Mix the steak spice into the lean ground beef. Form 6 patties, making sure the patties are flat and tight around the outside. With your fingers, make a depression in the centre of the pattie. This helps to keep the pattie flat during cooking. Grill the patties on the barbecue. After the last turn, divide the bacon and place on the patties. Slice and toast the buns on the upper rack. Slather the peanut butter on both sides of the toasted bun. Insert the patty and be ready for a great taste sensation. Chef ’s Tip: Have a napkin ready. May 18, 2019 •

Montreal needs extra garbage pick-up during the summer

T

here is a problem that appears to be increasing over the past few years during the summer and it has never really been addressed. Perhaps it is time to make a 'stink', a really big 'stink', against the stink - which prevails in the garbage bins of our fair

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca

city and its boroughs. It's that time of the year again when people, especially tourists, start to notice the stench - the 'je ne sais quoi' odour suddenly attacking their olfactory senses in a way that leaves many gagging, fanning at the air with their hands in hopes of making it go away. It doesn't. Tourist season adds even more garbage and last summer I met more than a few visitors who questioned whether dead animals (or worse) were being dumped into the bins. Complaints went out to City Hall and the Boroughs, but like most things, they fell upon deaf ears. It all started back in 2015 under the Coderre administration, when they announced plans to eliminate twice a week garbage collection in all of its 19 boroughs by 2019 and instead have it collected only once a week. At the same time, they also announced the rolling out of brown bins for the Organic Waste Program, with weekly pick-ups. In theory it should have balanced out the changes to the regular garbage collections, but fast forward to 2018 and it is not working for many people. Once a week pick-up is not enough, especially in the downtown area. And it gets even stinkier. What they did NOT announce in 2015 and implemented in several boroughs, is that once households are part of the Organic Waste Program - once a week regular garbage collection was reduced to once every TWO weeks. The smell lingers on and it is growing. It is simple to understand; regular garbage bins are usually filled within the first week and by the • May 18, 2019

Overflowing garbage bins are seen all over the city and neighbouring boroughs

second week they are overflowing with all the other smelly trash that is non-compostable like: diapers, rags, pizza boxes, sanitary napkins, cat litter and lord knows what else. Only the raccoons, squirrels, skunks, mice, rats and even crows are celebrating. It is the same problem in areas that went from twice a week to once a week - and this goes for all apartment buildings with over eight units who are not participating in the Organic Waste Program, plus they are required to keep the bins inside the building until pick-up day. The stench from overflowing bins are wafting up into the apartments. Adding to the mess, I noticed less and less people were using the brown bins during the warmer months. When I lifted the lid of our organic waste bin last summer to add more scraps, it was filled with maggots - and not just a few. The underside of the lid was coated with them and inside it was

maggot-armageddon. The compostable liner bags, of which the city suggested I buy and use, had rotted through - and it stank to the point of making me dizzy. I was told to use the smaller household bin they also distributed to put my waste in until pickup day. But that was not a viable option for us because the bin needed to remain in our home - and it smelled repugnant when I had to open it, permeating our entire place. I tried leaving it on our back balcony but raccoons managed to throw it down the stairs and pop it open. I tried all the tricks they recommended and none of them worked. Maggots multiply very quickly. And they are gross. With the exception of homeowners, most people don't have places like balconies or garages to store their bins until pickup day. The solution for most was to simply stop participating in the program and throw the

waste into regular bins in sealed plastic bags. It defeats the purpose of the program on all fronts. Last autumn during the election campaign I hap-

14.75/

pened to meet Mayor Alan DeSousa of Ville Saint-Laurent, who was on the ground meeting his constituents. I took the opportunity to discuss

the problem with him and offered insight into why the plan might not be working. I put forward the idea of the city going back to once a week pick-up for the summer. He acted surprised, insisting the program was a success, so I suggested he take a drive around his borough and see for himself what was going on - and he promised to look into it. Well, it's been over six months since and not a word from him - nothing in the borough agenda or in their news releases, nor were there any changes indicated on the nifty 2018 Collection Calendar they sent out. Montreal's waste management program should really be looked at again by the new administration, under Mayor Valérie Plante - but will someone listen? Perhaps Montrealers need to make some noise about it, because something certainly stinks. In the meantime, how about adding the extra garbage pick-up this season, before the 'nosepinch and gag' reflex kicks in - especially in the downtown area?

tion. Recent studies have reached some surprising conclusions about what causes anxiety in the first place. Previously, there had been a great debate over nature vs. nurture. Is it the bills piling up and the overbearing boss, or are you just a naturally "high-strung" person? Everyone is born with a natural hard-wired response to stress and anxiety. However like any

• May 18, 2019

Do you have anxiety? other mechanism, this response is complex. If one variable in this system response goes wrong, the entire system can spin out of control. In prehistoric times, we needed this heightened level of awareness and caution with danger lurking around every corner. But in modern times, this same survival mechanism that is meant to protect you can make you feel nervous and anxious for no reason. How many times have you said to yourself, "There is nothing to be nervous about," but the anxiety is still there and you don’t really understand it and you can't help feeling this way? Most people feel anxious when facing a challenging situation, such as a job interview, an exam or new life situations such as getting married. In moderation, anxiety isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, anxiety can help you stay alert and focused, spur you to action, and motivate you to solve problems. But when anxiety is constant or overwhelming, when it interferes with your relationships and activities, it stops being functional— that’s when you’ve crossed the line from normal, productive anxiety into the territory of anxi-

ety disorders. If you identify with several of the following signs and symptoms, and they just won’t go away, you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder. Are you constantly tense, worried, or on edge? Does your anxiety interfere with your work, school, or family responsibilities? Are you plagued by fears that you know are irrational, but can’t shake? Do you believe that something bad will happen if certain things aren’t done a certain way? Do you avoid everyday situations or activities because they cause you anxiety? Do you experience sud-

den, unexpected attacks of heart-pounding panic? Do you feel like danger and catastrophe are around every corner? Because anxiety disorders are a group of related conditions rather than a single disorder, they can look very different from person to person. One individual may suffer from intense anxiety attacks that strike without warning, while another gets panicky at the thought of mingling at a party. Someone else may struggle with a disabling fear of driving, or uncontrollable, intrusive thoughts.Yet another may live in a constant state of tension, worrying about anything and everything. Despite their different

www.mtltimes.ca

forms, all anxiety disorders share one major symptom: persistent or severe fear or worry in situations where most people wouldn’t feel threatened. In addition to the primary symptoms of irrational and excessive fear and worry, other common emotional symptoms of anxiety include: feelings of apprehension or dread, trouble concentrating, feeling tense and jumpy, and anticipating the worst, irritability, restlessness and always watching for signs of danger. Anxiety is more than just a feeling. As a product of the body’s fight-or-flight response, anxiety involves a wide range of physical symptoms. Because of the

numerous physical symptoms, anxiety sufferers often mistake their disorder for a medical illness. They may visit many doctors and make numerous trips to the hospital before their anxiety disorder is discovered. Common physical symptoms of anxiety include: pounding heart, sweating, stomach upset, dizziness, frequent urination or diarrhea, shortness of breath, tremors, headaches and fatigue. Many people who suffer from anxiety attacks also suffer from Depression. Depression makes anxiety worse and vice versa. Stress, anxiety, pain and depression are all related. One often exacerbates the other.Trying to isolate these emotional and physical states and to deal with one aspect is difficult. Where does one begin and one end? What we do know though is that relaxation can help in all of these conditions. The common factor, learning to relax, has been shown to reduce stress, calm anxiety, reduce pain and alleviate depression. While Dali also met other big time movie figures as Walt Disney and Cecil B. DeMille during his visit to the movie capitol, Harpo arranged a pitch meeting between MGM boss Louis B. Mayer and Dali about the possibility of having the studio – where the Marxes’ previous two comedies were box office hits for MGM – turn the idea into a major motion picture. Jimmy realizes that the Surrealist Women is indeed the girl of his dreams; however, the forces of normalcy (mostly in the form of a very jealous Linda) tries to block the hooking up of the pair. But it is up to the efforts of Groucho and Chico (who are close associates of the Surrealist Woman) to make sure that she and Jimmy become lovers, in order for

him to find true happiness. Whoever reads the graphic novel portion of this book may, understandably, scratch their heads in a state of confusion of what the story of “Giraffes” is all about and how it’s presented. But in order to appreciate it further, one must take into account that this story is from the mind of Salvador Dali and his unconventional, surrealistic world. Looking like a combination of “A Night at the Opera” and the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine”, “Giraffes on Horseback Salad” looks like a movie scenario that would have

made it to the screen had it been produced 30 years later, at the height of the psychedelic period, which is so well exemplified by Manuela Pertega’s vivid, colourful illustrations. And thanks to Josh Frank’s diligent efforts to tell the full story of this rarely heard piece of the Marx Brothers story, we get a fascinating, wellrounded history behind Salvador Dali’s quest to break into the movie industry, and the lengths it took to have this longburied story resurrected to satisfy the never ending quest for little known facts and stories by future generations of classic film

buffs. Giraffes on Horseback Salad is a wonderful piece of unearthed Hollywood hidden history. We get that rare opportunity to experience what could have been had two sets of unconventional artistic minds would not have been regarded by the real world as way ahead of their time. …Now if Marx Brothers fans could get that same diligent treatment about what happened to “Humor Risk” (the brothers’ much sought after first movie, which was made in 1920, and no copies of it exist at all. Or does it?).

our hero (or anti-hero) still on the run. Ready for chapter 4, one should say. "John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum" is very entertaining, there is violence from beginning to end, but some of the kills, in fact, are so excessive that most people in the audience laughed. Those who like

action and feel curious about the ritualistic practices and codes of a sophisticated criminal organization such as the High Table, will undoubtedly enjoy this movie. Of course, if violence is not your cup of tea, this is not the movie for you. Running time: 131 min

She in turn will take him to another assassin, Berrada (Jerome Flynn) who will not cooperate, until he is persuaded –by the usual methods– to give the information allowing John to get to the mysterious elder (Saïd Taghmaoui) seeking the removal of his excommunicado condition. But the troubles for John won't end there. Indeed he gets deeper into trouble, mainly when The Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon) makes an unannounced visit to the Continental with the bad news that would also involve both status of the establishment and that of his owner. This modern cinema noir story starts at the moment that was left in chapter 2, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) sentenced to death by the High Table, the consortium of crime, after he contravened a rule that prohibits to do business (i.e., to kill anyone) in the premises of the Continental Hotel in New York, a sanctuary for criminals. A 14-million dollars bounty is offered to anyone who kills the now

excommunicado John. Winston (Ian McShane) owner of the Continental, had delayed the official announcement of the prize on his head, to give John one hour to elude his potential assassins. John will make good use of the extra time, but it won't be enough to be safe, and he would be again on the run. Fortunately for him, his killing abilities remain intact and just in the first twenty minutes of the film you would have lost count of the bodies that he has left lifeless. If your broker is present during the visits, perhaps they can pick up on buyer’s body language, answer questions and obtain valuable feedback from observations. This can help tweak your pricing and marketing strategy. With your broker, you may decide to clump all visits together on certain days of the week, cutting down on cleaning and preparation. You may decide it’s best to accept all visit requests with a 24 hour minimum notice, which is the most common.
