t has been a long time coming, although it is never a good time for construction-weary commuters in this city. Transport Quebec announced that the Ville Marie and Viger tunnels will be undergoing work over the next three years, starting Monday August 12th. Most of the work will be done on the ceiling of the tunnels to repair the concrete components of the infrastructure - and parts of it need to be removed in order to do so. The work is part of a plan to maintain the tunnel until a major overhaul takes place, although it is unclear when it will happen. According to Maxime Guay, a communications advisor for Quebec’s Minister of Transport, there will be partial or complete closures of the tunnels, but mostly

Making Old Montreal look new

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

old place is a public space of historical importance. Renovating something that, by definition, is old and is valued precisely for its age, presents many difficulties, mainly in terms of keeping its authenticity. Of course, we don’t have to get rid of electricity and instead install gas lamps to make Old Montreal look as it was until the 19th century. Although, streetlights looking like old gas lampposts were installed in parts of St. Paul Street some years ago.The question is always how to be authentic, after all, Old Montreal is a collection of buildings and streets ranging from the 17th to the 20th century. Therefore, we don’t need to set it in just one period, but • August 10, 2019

rather to synthesize its evolution, from the colonial period to the time of being the industrial and financial hub of the city, to the current time in which it is basically a tourist attraction. When in 2015 thenMayor Denis Coderre announced the renovation of Saint Paul Street, one of the most popular in Old Montreal, he said he wanted to make it more pedestrian-friendly. This new focus would be achieved by lowering and

widening the sidewalks. For vehicles, the maximum speed in the area would be 20 km/h. It was not the first renovation the street has had. Years ago, the ugly asphalt that had covered the cobblestones in some of its sections, was removed, and the old pavement of rectangular stones was again visible. However, in the new St. Paul Street, the old cobblestones have been replaced by industrially-produced

pieces that resemble cobblestones, but are not. First of all, cobblestone, because of being created in a half industrial, half artisanal way keeps some irregularity in its shape, texture, and even in its colour. The ones that are being installed on St. Paul and other streets in Old Montreal are totally regular because they are industrially produced. (One has to ask whether they were manufactured here in Montreal or imported from China, one never

11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

knows these days when everything seems to come from there). The sidewalks have been widened, which gives more room for the circu-

lation of pedestrians; however, the city forgot one important thing: despite the extra space on the sidewalk, not a single tree was planted. Once again the bureaucrats in charge of urban planning have overlooked the fact that trees are not only a beautiful addition to any neighbourhood –old or new– but that they also provide much-needed shade, especially when there is a heat wave like the one we experienced in mid-July. They also are essential contributors to the quality of the air in the city. Of course, Old Montreal and St. Paul, the street that took its name from the founder of the city, Paul de Chomedey, will survive all these attempts at making it “look new”. Not even the nondescript stones that have replaced the old cobblestones could change its character. The city bureaucrats once more made a mistake thinking that to make an old street look “new” you have to impose uniformity where before reigned an anarchic but charming diversity of shapes.

In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. Ensemble Montréal requests the government extend the Orange Line to the Bois-Franc REM Station

T

he Mayor of the Borough of SaintLaurent and spokesman for the Official Opposition on transportation matters, Mr. Alan DeSousa, today unveiled a motion asking the Québec government to commit to extending the Metro's orange line from the Côte-Vertu station to the Bois-Franc station of the future Metropolitan Express (REM) network. “This isn't the first time that such an extension

has been requested. But, given the current context of the upcoming launch of the REM, employment growth in the West Island region, proposed real estate developments and the consequent growth in number of trips in this area, we must have a global vision of the mobility issues. In our opinion, the solution will be found in intermodal transit and the marriage of the Metro and the REM", declared Mr. DeSousa. Present plans for the REM do not include a

connection to the western portion of the orange line. However, the arrival of the REM at the BoisFranc train station, with its connections to Montréal-Trudeau airport and the west end, make it the ideal place for a junction with the Metro. "More than one-quarter (27%) of jobs on the Island of Montreal are located in the western area, a region that's relatively poorly served by public transit, compared to the city centre. As for the road network, between

500,000 and 1 million vehicles travel there daily. Connecting the orange line to the REM at the Bois-Franc station would therefore considerably reduce the number of cars on the road," added Mr. Francesco Miele, City Councillor for the Côtede-Liesse district. Overall, the Borough of Saint-Laurent believes that, once connected to the orange line, daily traffic at the Bois-Franc station would increase to 76,000 or 23 million travellers per year, causing a

related reduction in road traffic of some 22 million vehicle-km. "Finally, we want to point out that only 2.2 km separate the Côte-Vertu Metro station from the Bois-Franc railway station. Not only that, but 1.2 km of the tunnel has already been built, thanks to construction of the CôteVertu Metro garage. This will greatly reduce the cost of the extension," concluded Mr. DeSousa.

Montrealer Samantha Kris takes the stage at Fearless Women’s Summit MT: What role have men played in shattering the glass ceiling for you?

SK: Throughout my career men have had critical roles as my allies. I’ve learned a great deal from my male colleagues and superiors and I have returned the favor by adding significant value to their projects and teams and clearly measuring the impact of my contribution. rom October 3 to 19, the 2019-2020 season will kick off with a double program featuring Edward Clug’s Carmina Burana and Stabat MATER. Carmina Burana is finally back with the company for the first time since 1998, the year Fernand Nault’s fabulous production, created in 1966, was last staged here. Romanian choreographer Edward Clug revisits a powerful and entirely humanizing 20th-century work in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. The piece was inspired by me-

dieval poems, and its introduction, O Fortuna, evokes the fate of the world as men find themselves powerless in the face of an uncertain future. Over 150 artists will gather onstage for a formidable spectacle: 40 dancers, the 70 musicians of the Grands Ballets Orchestra, 40 choral singers and 5 renowned solo singers, including soprano Aline Kutan, tenor Spencer Britten and bassbaritone Alexandre Sylvestre. The artistic director of Les Grands Ballets decided to call once more

on the services of the gifted choreographer Edward Clug, firmly anchored in modernity, in order to reflect the implicit torment of Carmina Burana, but also and above all springtime, hope and love, central themes of the work, one that reaches out to human beings in their most visceral dimension: that of our legacy, and of our continued existence. “We have learned from history that only human feelings are constant; only the esthetic and the context change. Italian Centennial Exhibition in Montreal

T

he Italian community is celebrating 100 years of cultural life in Montreal from 1919-2019 and a host of activities are planned through to 2020. The Centennial

celebrations kick off with the Italian Archives Exhibition sponsored by the Order of the Sons and Daughters of Italy of Canada (O.F.I.). "We are working to define our cultural life here," says O.F.I. President Joseph Fratino. "What we brought to Canada is different. At my age, I am passionate about seeing my culture come alive," the affable sexagenarian says. The O.F.I. is the oldest Italian organization in Montreal. It was originally known as the

1928. Representatives of the Piave Lodge in the parade in honor of G. Caboto organized by the O.F.I.

Order of the Sons of Italy or Ordine Figli d'Italia in Italian, but this year was rebranded as the Order of the Sons and Daughters of Italy to reflect gender equality. The exhibition was conceived in part to commemorate its own centenary as a pivotal institution in the life of the Italian community in Montreal. The exhibition will include photos, memorabilia, minutes of

meetings, and folkloric costumes - you name it. "It contains the most archives of any Italian organization, private or governmental since the 1920s," Fratino says. The documentary film Terra Mia by Agata de Santis of Redhead Productions will also be part of the exhibition. The daughter of Italian immigrants to Montreal de Santis turns the camera on her family and com-

munity as she seeks to articulate the effects a half-century of adaptation and integration has had on the immigrant experience. The exhibition opens with a vernissage and private reception on Aug. 9th and will be available for public viewing free of charge from Aug.10th - Aug. 23rd at the Casa d'Italia Rotunda. Located in a landmark 20th century Art

Deco building across the street from MarchĂŠ JeanTalon, the Casa d'Italia cultural center bridges the past and present in "Little Italy" as the historic Italian neighborhood is known in travel brochures. These days the bustling commercial hub in the Villeray district is home for families and individuals from many different ethnic communities as well as those of Italian descent.

O.F.I. is also presenting a commemorative book published by iconic Canadian publisher Guernica Editions to mark the Italian Centenary. The pictorial history tells the story of successive waves of Italian immigrants who came to Canada beginning in 1870 to make a better life for themselves and their families. It includes major highlights of the Italian Canadian experience in Montreal tracing an arc from arrival to survival through the difficult years of the Great Depression followed by the Italian Canadian Internment to the eventual flourishing of a new generation that embraces a dual identity as Italian-Canadian. Fratino who says he still "feels Italian" hopes that the Italian Archives Exhibition will be a window on the past for the next generation "to know where they came from" even as the Italian Centennial is an opportunity for everyone to recognize and celebrate the active presence of the Italian community in Montreal and the value of it has added to the Canadian cultural mosaic.

S

Perfect Summer Feet By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

everal years ago, I wrote an article called ‘A Love Story’. A revisit is timely. Summer fun. Vacation. Cottage country. Wherever there is sand, there lays the perfect partner for your feet. A Love Story A beach. A riverbed. A desert. An ocean floor. Sand, sand and more sand. Those tiny gritty eroded rocks. Those small loose granular grains that can do absolute wonders for our feet. A perfect match. ‘Wriggle the sand between the toes. Rub the sand against the soles.’ Luxuriate in nature’s natural exfoliant that helps soften the feet and remove the dry skin buildup. Exfoliation reduces aging. So, for younger and healthier looking feet, walk that beach or sit near the water’s edge and dig tunnels with the toes. Don’t stop there. Sand the hands. Build a castle, or bury yourself as far as

you dare. Play. Yes, the sand will find its way into the folds of your bathing suit. Yes, wind gusts will blow it where you do not want it to go. It will end up in your cooler and sneak into your sandwich bag (thus the name), and it will attach itself to your sun lotions like a magnet. It may get in your eyes and your mouth and your ears. But think ‘glass half full’. Sand cleanses, softens and soothes. And it simply washes away. Lancelot and Guinevere. Orpheus and Eurydice. Napoleon and Josephine. Sand and Feet. Perfect mates. Alas. No beach, riverbed or ocean floor? Is the Sahara out of the question? Exfoliate at home. Use salts instead. Soak, scrub and enjoy the tub. Improvise. We do suggest alternatives to sand. But if the sand is an option this summer, perhaps you might engage it with a new perspective. There are many health benefits to befriending the sand. The 3000 to 7000 tiny nerve endings in each foot are stimulated

by walking or running, eliciting that tingling pleasurable feeling. All muscles in feet, legs, calves, quads and glutes are strengthened. Sand ‘exercise’ makes you feel grounded and centered, relaxed and energized. Montreal’s West Island could soon have largest municipal park in Canada

n a press conference on Thursday August 8th, along with several West Island Mayors, Mayor Valerie Plante announced a proposal to build a 3,000-hectare ‘Grand parc de l’ouest’ (Great West Park). It could be fifteen times the size of Mount Royal park, at least eight times the size of Manhattan, New York’s Central Park and the largest municipal park in Canada. It will combine

parks running from St. Anne de Bellevue and across Ile Bizard. Plante stated, as far as funding the project, that she is ‘“…having conversations with the federal and provincial governments, but it’s worth it. This is how we need to change the paradigm.” There are developments already in the planning stages in some of the areas where the park would be built on, but

his summer was certainly one for the books for Sun Youth Football as many of their players took to the field on some of the most elite stages in Canada. Not only did the Hornets participate in various all-star events but they showed up to play and make The Nest proud. Fresh off of a municipal and provincial championship, quarterback Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald and linebacker Liam Masley represented the Hornets for Team Quebec in the Canada Cup. While the team claimed the silver medal they earned major respect after a four overtime victory over Alberta in the semi finals. It was no surprise that Eloa brought home top honors as tournament MVP (offense) after the impressive performance. To top it off, the quarterback’s talents and hard work have earned him a spot on Team Canada for the 2020 IFAF

World Junior Championship! Keep an eye on these two players as they take their talents to the CEGEP level for the 2019-20 season (Eloa: Vanier and Liam: AndréGrasset). The tournament also featured former Hornet and Coach Anthony Di Francesco who made Sun Youth proud by coaching the U16 team to a 28-7 victory over Ontario to bring home the Gold medal. At the U17 level, four of the Hornets Bantam players represented The Nest for the QBFL elites in this years’ edition of the Nike Team XL Bowl. Oscar Escobar (WR), Luca Lapaix Lorenzo (RB), David Stefu (DL) and Andrew Lainis (LB) put forward a valiant effort to secure the bronze medal in a decisive 31-13 victory over EMS. Watch out for these guys next year as they will help defend Sun Youth’s title as city champs! Also represented was Bantam Coach and former Hornet Frank Kociper who

coached the QBFL AllStars. At the U15 level, Hornets Adam Bateman (DB), Vince Elie (RB), Ethan Hall (RB), Ariane Neveu (DL) and Mohamed Traore (WR) took the field to capture the Gold medal for the MRFL Monstars for the second year in a row. Accompanied by their coaches Jesse Blizzard, Alex Vidal, Duane Collins, Rubens Ernest, Tony Mohammed, Robin Hunter, Bubba hunter, Nicky Sklivas and Sophie Roy, the Monstars managed to edge out the LLL Predators in a 48-38 victory. Sun Youth congratulates all players and coaches who made the organization proud this summer! If you have children between 7-17 who want to play football at a competitive level and be part of a winning culture, Sun Youth invites them to join the family! in common? If you answer "they are all left-handed," you are right! August 13th is Left Handers Day. Full disclosure. I am left handed. In LEFT IS RIGHT: The Survival Guide for Living Lefty in a Right-Handed World, author Rae Lindsay presents an upbeat look at the sinisterly side of life. She lists dozens of well-known people who belong to this "exclusive club" (estimated members in the United States: 40 million), discusses the theories about hand preference and brain organization, and traces the superstitions and religious customs associated

th

with lefties through history. Rae Lindsay writes that "all the world's major languages have special terms for being left-sided or lefthanded...and very few of them are flattering," dating back to the Latin word sinister, which really meant "the pocket side" of togas. In modern languages gauche means "clumsy" or "awkward," mancini indicates "crooked" or "maimed “in Italian; in Romany bongo translates as "evil" or "crooked;" and in Spanish, no ser zurdo means to be "very clever," in other words, not to be lefthanded. Bizarre information is that some people are afraid of left handedness. What causes someone to become a southpaw? Scientists aren’t exactly sure, but research points to a complex collaboration between genes and environment. While no exact set of “leftie genes” have been discovered, people who dominantly use their left hands do have more left-handed family members. Researchers have found different brain wirings in righties vs. lefties. Why exactly people are lefthanded is still a bit of a mystery — partly because left-handed people are

often excluded from scientific research, experts say —There’s no denying it. Left-handers are the odd ones out. Lefties make up about 10 percent of the population but it seems as if society has forgotten about them. Just consider all of the right-handed gadgets, awkwardly designed desks, and cooking tools that fit comfortably only in your right hand. Lefties are more likely to have allergies and are more prone to Migraines. They are more likely to be insomniacs and are three times more likely to become alcoholics – the right side of the brain has a lower tolerance to alcohol!

On the brighter side, lefties seem more adept at processing information and concepts from the right side of the brain, the hemisphere which controls intuitions, the five senses, and "holistic thinking" which allows them to grasp broader concepts, such as an entire painting or musical composition. They are more likely to be on extreme poles of the intelligence scale Lefties are better at 3D perception and thinking and better at multi-tasking. . We certainly shouldn't worry about lefties chances of success: here’s a list of left handed presidents. James A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry S Truman, Gerald Ford,

Roald Regan, George H W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Lefties make especially good baseball players, tennis players, swimmers and boxers.Almost 40% of the top tennis players are lefties. Graduating lefties are likely to become 26% richer than right handed graduates. Four of the five original designers of the Macintosh computer were left-handed. One in four Apollo astronauts were left-handed – 250% more than the normal level. It seems the percentages have remained consistent over the years dating back to Neanderthal days so I guess we are here to stay…

Selling your house in Montreal’s hot real estate market 2019

urgent repair that needs attention. This is a crucial step enabling the seller to declare everything to the next potential buyer. Sellers can also obtain estimates for a major repair, which will help the buyer better assess your home. Work with a realtor who understands the type of home you have and the target buyer the home will appeal to. This will allow you to fill out the Declaration of the Seller efficiently and prepare your home to sell! 2) PRICE PRICE PRICE! Remember your property is red hot when it first comes out on the market and everyone will want to see it! If no one has shown interest within the first week, then you may have a problem with the price. Make sure you price correctly at the start of the listing, to avoid several drastic price changes. If not, work with your realtor and be proactive with the pricing to always keep the interest of the buyers, which dwindles very quickly!

The price is the number one factor that drives buyers today – they are more knowledgeable than ever before and are economically cautious due to the restrictions of their mortgage pre-approval amount. They can smell an overpriced house a mile away and will steer clear of putting in an offer – they will just sit on the side line and wait it out. Work with a broker who offers you a plan and strategy on how to get the most money within your timeline. There are different ways of pricing your home smartly to beat out the competition, either slightly under the market value, or as close as possible to it, in order to incite a high number of qualified buyers.
