25,000 Quebecers are living with Parkinson’s disease; one in five of them is younger than 50 years old. More than half require formal or informal assistance for their daily living activities. Health care professionals from a dozen specialties look after the several motor and non-motor symptoms of the disease. The number of Quebecers with Parkinson’s is expected to double in the next 15 years. PCQ also recently initiated two patient support groups: one in Cote-desNeiges and another in Dollard-des-Ormeaux (DDO), primarily addressing an English-speaking clientele. How to sell high: Avoid these three mistakes when selling your home

M

ontreal - When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Depending on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees, and many homes are discarded by prospective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they're even given a chance of showing. Your asking price is often your home's "first impression", and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it's imperative that you make a good first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a home seller as pricing too low.

Taking a look at what homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and on it's own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision.A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled "Home sellers: How to Get the Price You Want( and Need)".This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but sell for the price you want. Understanding sexual consent through virtual reality

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

id you know... "Insisting is not an option, always make sure that one partner wants the same thing as the other… " says the titles at the end of the virtual reality short "Do you NO the limit? Consent in 360º / Connais-tu LA limite? Le consentement en 360º" presented this August 23 at Cabot Sq. by the YWCA with the support of the Quebec's Secretariat à la condition feminine. Using the new technology of virtual reality that allows exploring a scene in 360º just by moving one's head, the Women's Y launched this initiative aimed at youths between the ages of 16 and 24.The film is seen from the perspective of a young woman who is about to experience a situation where the issue of sexual consent would become crucial. The young lady finds herself alone with this young man, in his apartment, where apparently she was invited with

another girl who didn't make it. After having a beer, he would make some advances on her. Although there seems to be some mutual attraction, the girl is not ready to go to bed with him—at least not in that first encounter. The point is how to understand and respect that decision the young woman has made: a situation not always easy to take on the part of guys. "This is an awareness-

"By placing oneself in the situation of the other (the victim of sexual assault in this case), one learns about how the other feels. The virtual reality experience provides a re-

alistic portrayal of the situation," she adds. The presentation at Cabot Sq., a very central location where many people circulate every day, is only the beginning of the campaign. "From now to 2017 three virtual reality mobile posts will be located at festivals and CEGEPs, with the purpose of making young people—both, male and female—more aware of the problem," says Coronado-Montoya.

For his part the producer-director of the virtual reality video Emanuel St-Pierre tells us about the use of this new technology: "The goal of the virtual reality experience is to make the viewer feel the emotion (in this particular case regarding the non-respect for the limits). That's achieved by placing yourself not only as a viewer but also as a character." He also tells us about some of the

technical issues as well, "we had to get a camera from the States since there was none here at the time. We made many tests as well before coming up with the final product." un Youth’s traditional annual new clothing giveaway for low income families was a tremendous success again this year with some 2400 people assisted on August 16 and 17 2016. The staff and volunteers were in for a surprise though when they arrived to the organization’s headquarters on the second day of distribution. Due to the intense rain of the previous day, a great part of the city was in the dark, powerless, in-

cluding the Saint-Urbain street old Baron Byng High school! Not letting this back luck deter them and taking into account the line up of people already present, the team brought some tables and all the clothes outside in Sun Youth’s side parking, creating a festive atmosphere. With the new school year beginning, increased expenses impose additional hardship for needy families in Montreal. Sun

Youth’s free clothing distribution in adult sizes is intended for them. Such a charitable event would not have been possible without generous donations of clothing from Modern Eternity Maternity Coats and Apparel, VF Imagewear Canada Inc., Quebec Copier, JoNoCo Copier and Paragone Inc. to whom Sun Youth expresses its sincere thanks.

Haven By The Sea - Pack your bags for Wells Maine

By Jillian Clark mtltimes.ca

estled along some of the most beautiful beaches in North America, Haven By The Sea is a destination Montreal must see in Southern Maine. Between the privately run inn itself, the surrounding shops of Wells and Ogunquit, neighbouring restaurants, and pristine beaches, The Haven promises a personalized getaway guests won’t find this side of the border. Classic cathedral ceilings and a friendly English bulldog greets guests as they enter Haven By The Sea. Fresh flowers and soft music floods the entrance inviting guests to explore the other common areas. “When you walk in the front door, you feel peace. That’s the only way I can describe it,” said Nancy Ezzo, owner and operator of The Haven. The feeling of peace flows along the hallway—lined by the original church pews—up the spiral staircase to some bedrooms, and through to the back of the inn to rest on the dining room’s terrace where guests admire the serene salt marsh. Nancy Ezzo purchased Haven By The Sea in May of this year. A whirlwind of experiences led to her settling on the charismatic 1920s era church-turnedinn by the ocean. “We’re four houses away from the ocean,” said Ezzo. “Guests roll out of bed and have a gourmet breakfast, get their bathing suits on and just walk to the beach.” Fresh Flowers, the Rocky Shoreline, and Personalized Service The beach itself is a major drawing point for tourists escaping to the east coast of the continent. shoreline—a sight unlike any other. “It’s a really clean, absolutely gorgeous beach,” Ezzo said. “There’s rocks to sit on, and in some area there’s been seals, and there’s tide pools full of hermit crabs, yet the town keeps it so completely immaculate.” Visitors relax amongst the tide pools, soak in the sun, and enjoy the salty air that follows them back to their rooms at the end of each day. The guest rooms overlook the inn’s surrounding gardens. The gardens overflow, mixing vegetables alongside flowers to maintain its fresh glory, despite the season. Guests find plenty of roses, trumpet flowers, gardenias, lilies, greenery, rhubarb, and red leafy lettuce. Nancy also grows a kitchen garden full of herbs that she uses to mix drinks and cook breakfast. Mornings at The Haven start early. With the help of her friend, Danny Pelton, Nancy has coffee ready by 6:30am for the first risers, then breakfast runs from 8:30 to 9:30am. Guests have the choice of dining in the dining room or on the terrace. “I’m all about freshness,” said Ezzo, about her choice of living floral décor around the dining room. Succulents sit on each table. Fresh breakfast, too—she even handpicks groceries herself at the local market, catering to allergies and dietary restrictions wherever possible. Every aspect of The Haven appears personalized, but that’s just Nancy’s way of life. “I’m a perfectionist,” she said. Nancy tracks the tides for each of her guests, informing them at breakfast what times are best spent along the water. She also helps her guests choose a place to dine in the evening, and makes their reservations to ensure they receive the best service at her neighbours’ establishments. The general consensus from guests is awe in how one woman provides such

The appreciation of wine

W

By Marco Giovanetti mtltimes.ca

ine appreciation isn’t something you should be shy of. It’s also an activity that does not make you a snob or apart for somebody else. It’s actually easy to enjoy the differences between a pinot noir and a cabernet without too much head scratching, financial distress, or the fuss of learning a new language. Wine often gets a bad reputation. Sometimes it’s deserved: Confusing lingo and intentionally snob language make wine complex to learn, famous critics and hyper expensive wines make normal people think it’s out of reach and only for the rich people, and there’s an entire cheap market with the mission of selling you the

what you like and what you don’t like, and why. At best, it’ll keep you from drinking something you didn’t like again, just because you forgot you tried it. Now don’t run out and buy a crazy amount of wine and start making wild notes. This is a slow, gradual process. The objective here is to enjoy yourself and learn about concept that “this is the your own tastes. Don’t make it a responsibility! real deal.” Other times it’s not just: Use this as an opportuThe old “wine is bullshit” nity to expand your horiattitude stereotype an entire drink with a general misrepresented attitude, and encourages people to just give up on something they may enjoy instead of learning about it. At the very least, it one who’s been through will help you keep track of the same situation as you,

or at least someone who’s relatively simple when it comes to reviewing wines. However, this could be difficult. It requires that you open up about the wines you have been drinking and enjoy at the moment (and doing it without guilt, even if all you’ve been drinking is Barefoot and Menage a Trois, you have to be able to say that!) and you need to find critics in the wine world that aren’t out to wrap you up in all of that BS we mentioned earlier. The point of all of this is to get a little guidance before you spend your money. It can go a long way, especially from someone who knows their stuff Like any skill, you can grow on your own with self-study, but finding someone who’s been down the road you’re on is invaluable. My last suggestion is to attend as many wine festivals as you can and to visit wineries. For info on the festivals, you can visit the webpage of the SAQ to start or take a look at the local wine magazines such as Vins et Vignobles or Exquis. For the wineries, why not start with some local ones. Quebec is blessed with a burgeoning wine scene and with many interesting grapes and estates to discover. WIth this I will let you to reflect this when you are sipping your glass of wine in the comfort of your house. Until next week.

eflexology is not a new therapy by any means, it has been around for more than 5000 years ago practiced in China, in Egypt, which had one of the oldest documented examples of the practice of this therapy. A pictograph dated around 2500-2330 BC at Saqqara in the tomb of the Physician Ankmahor shows two practitioners working on their two clients. Another track if this therapy was passed down to the American Indians. The western knowledge of Reflexology has early roots in Europe where it was known and practiced as far back as the fourteenth century it came to North America about 100 years ago. The interest and knowledge has continued and it has developed into a worldwide therapy. Reflexology is a Natural Healing Therapy without the use of drugs. It is based in the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feet which correspond to every part,

By stimulating these reflexes, we are sending natural energy along the nervous system or meridian lines to clear any congestion or blockage on these lines in the corresponding zones. sk the goats how much they love to chew the leaves and meaty fruit of the gnarly argan tree, native to Morocco. Climbing the tree is child’s play, they’ll say, and sometimes as many as 8 or 9 goats will challenge the swaying limbs. They do not seem to care if they damage or destroy the tree, or eat the fruit before it has ripened. After all, they are goats. Ask the goats about the succulent argan oil hidden in the inner kernels, and they’ll look down at the Berbers anxiously waiting below. They will tell you that they can’t digest everything so they poop out the small nuts. The Berbers are then able to easily crack them open to relish the kernels inside. That is where the argan oil treasure lies. But the goats don’t seem to care. But we do. We love the miraculous oil on our hair, our nails, our skin. Rich in omegas and Vitamin A and E, argan oil moisturizes, protects and feeds us. We could also thank the goats for playing their part in helping us discover this magic oil from Morocco. Without them, the Berbers may have given up on trying to crack the case.TODAY most co-

SATURDAY INSANITY ops (like Targanine where Earth To Body gets their oil) do not ask the goats to help. The trees are protected not only against damage by these nimble climbers but also against deforestation and desertification. Instead of waiting for the goats to do their thing, local women are hired (fair trade co-ops) to help crack open the fruit to retrieve the succulent oils hidden deep inside. The goats are fed the fruit without having to do the climbing. Everyone is happy. We were one of the first companies to sell Argan oil in Canada. A rare treat and unknown by most. Our customers adored it and wanted more. So we made an argan moisturizer cream. All of our creams are created from scratch. We never use commercial bases for any of our products. “Please make an argan soap”, they asked. So we did, along with avocado, organic oatmeal and tamanu oil, the latter nut oil also very new to Canada (and the subject of a future article). We also make a “Spoil Me Body Oil’ with argan. It is truly decadent on the skin. As the popularity of argan oil increased, so did the demand. ‘Moroccan Oil’ entered the salons, advertised for hair and nails. A large marketing

budget skyrocked the desire for this oil. But it is not pure. ‘The ingredient list for the commercial product Moroccan Oil are listed in declining volume order on the label: cyclopentasiloxane, dimethicone, cyclomethicone, butylphenyl methylpropional, argania spinoza kernel oil, linseed extract, fragrance supplement, D&C Yellow11, D&C Red-17, coumarin, benzyl benzoate and alpha-isomethyl ionone. For a similar product, One 'N Only Argan Oil, the ingredients are dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, dimethiconol, C12-15, alkyl benzoate, fragrance, argania spinosa kernel oil, Yellow 11 and Red 17.‘ L ivest rong.com This long list may or may not be meaningful to you, but if you continue to read our articles, you will become aware of what you SHOULD be feeding your skin. Deciding to use natural nutritious ingredients can be life changing. Try pure argan oil. Tell the goats. They will be proud of your choice. We stand behind our products. Seinfeldia by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

(Simon & Schuster, $35)

he Soup Nazi … Yada, Yada, Yada … the Bubble Boy … the Summer of George … Master of Your Domain … Kenny Bania … the Junior Mint … Vandalay Industries … Festivus. These are some of the phrases and characters that for nine seasons were associated with the NBC sitcom “Seinfeld”, the show about nothing that defined TV comedy during the 90s, and is now regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms in television history. However, it was a long, tough road for the weekly misadventures of Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer to make it from just another sitcom to iconic TV series. And that nine-year endurance test is well chronicled in Jennifer Keishin Armstrong’s fascinating behind-thescenes account Seinfeldia. Armstrong, a former “Entertainment Weekly” journalist who has written critically-acclaimed books detailing the histories of “The Mickey Mouse Club” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, offers a detailed, thorough history of “Seinfeld”’s uphill battle to TV immortality. The show was the brainchild of two New York-based comics: Jerry Seinfeld, who was increasingly building a reputation as a popular comic on the club circuit, and Larry David, a former member of the 1980s ABC late night sketch comedy show “Fridays”, and an unpredictable, volatile stand-up at best. When the show about nothing was formulated and pitched, it didn’t have the right amount of confidence from NBC, the network that somehow reluctantly picked it up.The pilot, which was called “The Seinfeld Chronicles”, aired in the summer of 1989. After the pilot received a great deal of negative reactions from test audiences, NBC decided to give the show – with its name now shortened to “Seinfeld” – a four-episode order, one of the smallest episode orders ever offered by a TV network. Somehow, with a scenario that could have been a death sentence for a potential TV series, “Seinfeld” slowly began to build an audience with its simple, quirky, reality-based approach to its episode plotlines, from getting a restaurant busboy fired, to wandering around a suburban shopping mall parking lot in a vain search to find their car, to waiting to get a table at a Chinese restaurant. But it was the airing of its controversial masturbation episode “The Contest” in 1992 that earned “Seinfeld” its permanent place in the pantheon of classic television. What I found so interesting about Seinfeldia is how Armstrong effectively argues that the success of “Seinfeld” lay not only in the terrific comic performances offered by Jerry Seinfled, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards, but how its constantly changing staff of writers (whom were subject to almost annual purges by Seinfled and David) managed to craft scripts that somehow effectively blurred the line between fiction and reality with every half-hour episode. And there are plenty of absorbing behind-thescenes stories in the book that backs up this argument. There are the actual people who inspired such memorable “Seinfeld” characters as the Soup Nazi, Kramer and “Crazy” Joe Devola (who was actually a Fox network executive and producer); the story behind Festivus (which

The Soup nazi on an episode of Senfeld was created by Seinfeld writer Dan O’Keefe’s father – who was an editor for Reader’s Digest – and developed the name from the Latin word for feast); how the Elaine character was originally a waitress (and only appeared in the pilot); and how many of the actors who por-

trayed Seinfeld’s most memorable characters have successfully made a living from their appearance(s) on the show (case in point: Larry Thomas, who continues to make countless personal appearances in the guise of the role that made him famous: the Soup Nazi). As well, readers get to find out more about the fan outrage over the disappointing series finale, how there was almost a 10th season of the show, the “Seinfeld Curse”, Michael Richards’ career-ending performance at the Laugh Factory in 2006, and how Kenny Kramer turned his real life inspiration for the Kramer character into a well-paying cottage industry, which includes his vast line of Seinfeld-related merchandise, and his popular Seinfeld Reality Tours of New York City. Seinfeldia is another fine addition to your TV history library. Jennifer Keishan Armstrong has firmed her reputation as a topnotch TV historian with this book, as she tells the story of how this show about nothing has turned generations of viewers into a nation of “Seinfeld” devotees who have absorbed the comically cynical world of Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer … and all of the quirky catchphrases and characters that make up this uniquely TV world.

he city of SainteAnne-de-Bellevue and the Electric Circuit are delighted to announce the commissioning of a new public charging station for electric vehicles. EV drivers can now charge their vehicle in the parking lot in front of City Hall located at 109 de la rue Sainte-Anne, in the heart of this commercial street.

“The shift toward transportation electrification is well underway in Québec, and we are very proud to now be able to welcome EV drivers who wish to use a public charging station. The city of SainteAnne-de-Bellevue has always been sensitive to environmental issues, and it therefore seemed natural to us to take an active role in the expansion of

Québec’s public charging network. I strongly believe in the importance of implementing infrastructure that will foster the municipality’s growth, and this initiative is perfectly in line with our local sustainable development plan,” explained Sainte-Anne-deBellevue Mayor Paola Hawa. “We are pleased to count the city of Sainte-

Avis public est par la présente donné que lors de la séance régulière du conseil le 26 septembre 2016 à 19h30 au centre communautaire George McLeish, 20 ave Morningside, la mairesse présentera pour fin d’adoption les projets de règlements de modification suivants :

Public notice is hereby given that at the regular council sitting to be held September 26, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. at the George McLeish Community Centre, 20 Morningside Avenue, the Mayor will present for adoption the following draft modification bylaws:

These modifications prohibit council members and employees of the municipality to make the announcement at a political fundraiser event, of the completion of a project, of the conclusion of a contract, or the awarding of a grant by the municipality, unless a final decision on this project, contract or grant has already been taken by the municipality’s competent authority. In addition, municipal officials must take the necessary measures to ensure that their office staff, if any, comply with the prohibition. In the event of non-compliance to this prohibition, the faulty person is accountable and may be subject to sanctions.
