You don’t have to stop sharing, just be mindful of when and how you share With the increasing popularity of social networks, today’s cybercriminals are using information easily available to them online to plot break-ins on their potential victims’ homes. In the era of social networking, geolocation – the identification of the real-world geographic location of an object such as a mobile phone or computer terminal – can be blamed for breakins and Google Street View is fast-becoming a sneaky tool used in planning burglaries. Most people provide a wealth of personal details such as their workplace location, people with whom they have relationships, their vacation timing and their address, and that can be putting them at risk. According to the survey, sixty per cent of men and just over half of women (51 per cent) do not always deactivate their geolocation on their mobile device (smart phones or tablets) while travelling. ‘‘Travelers may be excited to post a countdown leading up to a trip or getaway or that they are en route or have arrived at their destination, but they need to be mindful of what, when and how they share online,’’ adds Randez. Top safety tips for homeowners on vacation To help protect travelers from social mediasavvy burglars, Allstate Insurance has partnered with Francisco Randez, TV and radio host, social media and travel expert, to offer some topline safety tips.

On social media • Be aware of your use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social networks. Do not publish your vacation departure dates on your social media accounts and remind your children not to do so either. Even if you are careful and only a few friends can see what you post, it is possible that some of your contacts have much less rigid security settings. • Check the privacy and security settings of your social media accounts, and use them to determine who has access to your personal information. You can set the parameters according to the highest possible level of security to protect your personal information and know which "friends" can access detailed personal information rather than "everybody" or "friends of friends." • Before posting pictures, ask yourself if they reveal too much information. • Avoid posting photos with geotagging. Most smart phones and many digital cameras automatically record the exact location where a 4

photo was taken. If you view this photo online, geotagging can reveal the street address or that you are far away on vacation, making your home a target. Disable geotagging functions and remove geotags on your older pictures using photo editing software. • Set an example and teach your children and other family members to be careful online. • Consider saving your photos for posting once you return home instead of throughout the trip, making it clear you are back home. Allstate Insurance survey finds that 23 per cent of Quebec vacationers have posted messages about being away on their social media accounts

Scots have long and historic ties with the province of Québec. They were instrumental in the building of the Lachine Canal, turning Montreal into one of the most important and prosperous ports in North America. Scots constructed the first bridge across the StLawrence River and notable Scot, Henry Morgan, built the first department store in Canada. Not to mention the numerous philanthropists of Scottish descent that are responsible for the funding of various institutions including museums, universities and hospitals such as James McGill, Peter Redpath, David M. Stewart which has shaped our province’s cultural landscape. However, celebrating Scottish culture www.mtltimes.ca

ou may have heard their slogan: “You can't beat Pete's meat." Smoke Meat Pete may be one those few cases where there is truth in advertising. Walking into Smoke Meat Pete’s and smelling the delicious aromas of the succulent food, your taste buds are saying order the smoke meat but give Pete’s meat a chance. His Steak, chicken and Ribs are to die for. Nothing beats Pete’s Meat is so true, try everything! On a recent early summer afternoon, we made the drive out to Île-Perrot to try some of Smoke Meat Pete's famous cured and seasoned smoke meat brisket and some sides. Our small group of dining companions included

both the uninitiated and the experienced, and knowing that Pete's has long been a favourite of Montrealers, all were eager to taste what was in store. It was a clear, gorgeous day, and when we arrived it felt like we had walked into a true smokehouse locale, just like you would expect to see. Colourful wood accents and great blues music contributed to the relaxed ambiance. We decided to dine outside in open air, which was an excellent choice. We ordered some jumbo smoked meat sandwiches, poutine, a dill pickle, and of course, some Cott's Black Cherry cola.

The meat and potatoes: The sandwich came on two big slices of fresh rye bread with just the right amount of yellow mustard (fear not mustard detractors, you can request that this be left out). The meat was very tender and flavourful, prepared with an expert blend of spices, and served at the ideal temperature. Even the peppercorns in the seasoning melted with each bite -- the whole dish fused perfectly. What's more, the portions were ample, mak-

ing a fork a necessity. The preparation method of the smoked meat here is commendable, and it's a rarity to find brisket this good. The poutine was another hit, owing partly to the fries, which were soft with just the right type of crispness at the edges, and made from quality potatoes. The mild cheese curds held up well, doused with Pete's gravy, which was itself a treat, tasting both homemade and gourmet, a happy medium somewhere between sauce brune and a lighter gravy.

We devoured the sandwiches along with the poutine, and the pickle, which was one of the best around to be sure, likely to be appreciated by any dill aficionado. The cold black cherry cola was the cherry on top, bright and refreshing, a perfect final kick after the comfort food feast we'd just taken on. While we stayed with classic smoked meat during our visit, there are other items on the menu to try. Pete's also offers steaks, smoked meat spaghetti, ribs, latkes, other sandwiches, etc.

As we were leaving, we noticed a drum kit on the stage inside, a promise of the live show to be experienced should you choose to visit during the evening (Pete's offers live music on a nightly basis). After the satisfying meal described above, all agreed we would return to eat at Pete's again, and soon. Kirkland Resident spends weeks in coma after bike accident

By Rhonda Massad mtltimes.ca

hen Kirkland’s Mike Shetler woke up after three weeks of being in a coma, he did not remember much about the 2012 bike accident that cost him life as he had come to know it. Shetler suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (T.B.I.). “I do not remember much anything about the accident,” he explained, “I was in a medically induced coma for 3 weeks, intensive care for several months and then a rehab hospital for several more.”Mike Shetler, Kirkland, Para-cycling, The Shelley Gautier Para-Sports Foundation, Rhonda Massad, West Island Blog Before the accident, Shetler was an active 55-year-old, competing as a 'middle of the pack' long distance triathlete, finishing three Ironman events. He enjoyed downhill skiing and tennis among other activities. “I worked alongside my wife Cathy as we built the Mansfield Club in Pointe-Claire over the years,” he said. “While she is still working there and I am still a shareholder, I am on long-term disability and no longer working.” After being brought out of the coma, Shetler had to relearn virtually everything, from walking to brushing his teeth. “I was left with moderate Ataxia, which affects my balance and coordination, and some cognitive issues.” Only two short years after the accident, Shetler believes he is lucky to be alive and is happy to be able to participate in family functions. Today, he focuses his determination on helping others with disabilities stay active while he works towards mastering riding a 3-wheel racing tricycle. “I volunteer helping a new foundation that aims to help people with disabilities lead healthier, 22

more active lives through sport called The Shelley Gautier Para-Sports Foundation, www.sgpsf.ca.” Shetler believes people that are disabled need to stay active to stay healthy and he practices what he preaches. “As I have worked to try to put my life together, I have tried para-cycling, recently riding a 3-wheel racing tricycle that forms one division of 4 in paracycling. Many people stop me when I ride around the West Island to ask me about my bike,” he admitted and gives much of the credit to Cycle Paul in Pointe-Claire for putting together his rather unique bike. “These 'trikes' are extremely tough to ride, however, I have been fortunate in that while I have only been riding mine for 2 months, I recently won a silver and a bronze medal at the Canadian Para-cycling Championships in Ottawa/Gatineau.” Shetler still has a ways to go to be able to ride at the World Cup level and make the national team but intends to make these his goals for the next season.
