What is TRUVADA for PrEP?
Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?
TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health.
Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you:
Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must be HIV-negative before you start taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. ® Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must continue to use safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. ® You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months. ® If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. ® To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: ® Know your HIV status and the HIV status of your partners. ® Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV to infect you. ® Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer sex partners. ® Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. ® If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: ® Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. TRUVADA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have HBV and stop taking TRUVADA, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health.
® Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. ® Also take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B infection.
What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: ® Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA. ® Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. ® Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. ® Bone problems, including bone pain, softening, or thinning, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? ® All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. ® If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA. ® If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can be passed to the baby in breast milk. ® All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. ® If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include certain medicines to treat hepatitis C (HCV) infection. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

inally, some good news! The Houston Astros have clinched their first division title in 16 years, the team’s first as a member of the American League. With a strong push in their final few games, the boys of summer could head into the playoffs with a 100-win season, a remarkable turnaround from three straight 100-loss campaigns in 2011 through 2013. Now let’s just hope we get to see Jose Altuve and George Springer soaked in champagne in the locker room. Here’s a bit more of what we’ve been reading at HoustonRainbowHerald.com.

Houston takes Texas to Supreme Court Equal means equal. The City of Houston and Mayor Sylvester Turner filed a petition for writ of certiorari in the United States Supreme Court that asks the court to review the June 30, 2017 decision of the Texas Supreme Court in Pidgeon v. Parker, reports The City of Houston in a press release. The release reads in part, “In Pidgeon, the Texas court held that in Obergefell v. Hodges and Pavan v. Smith, the United States Supreme Court “did not hold that states must provide the same publicly funded benefits to all married persons,” regardless of whether their marriages are same-sex or opposite-sex. But in fact, Obergefell, decided in 2015, recognized a nationwide right to civil marriage for same-sex couples, and held that the benefits a state attaches to marriage must be provided equally to all married couples, whether same-sex or oppositesex. In Pavan, decided June 26, 2017, the Court reaffirmed that Obergefell requires that samesex marriages are entitled the same “constellation of benefits” afforded opposite-sex marriages.” Photo courtesy © Equality Daily News Home

thank for that: Edith Windsor. The gay rights pioneer, whose landmark Supreme Court case struck down parts of a federal anti-gay-marriage law and paved a path toward legalizing same-sex nuptials nationwide, died September 12 at 88, reports ABCNews.com. “Windsor already was 81 when she brought a lawsuit that proved to be a turning point for gay rights. The impetus was the 2009 death of her first spouse, Thea Spyer. The women had married legally in Canada in 2007 after spending more than 40 years together. Windsor said the federal Defense of Marriage Act’s definition of marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman prevented her from getting a marital deduction on Spyer’s estate. That meant Windsor faced a $360,000 tax bill that heterosexual couples would not have,” writes ABC News. Windsor won her case with the Supreme Court voting 5 to 4 in June 2013 that the provision in the law was unconstitutional, and that legally married samesex couples are entitled to the same federal benefits that heterosexual couples receive. That decision became the basis for a wave of federal court rulings that struck down state marriage bans and led to a 2015 Supreme Court ruling, giving same-sex couples the right to marry from coast to coast. Former President Barack Obama said, “America’s long journey towards equality has been guided by countless small acts of persistence, and fueled by the stubborn willingness of quiet heroes to speak out for what’s right. +1 Google+ F Facebook.com & P Find us on P

Trump isn’t the only one with a Twitter problem e By

I
have a problem and I need your help. Much as I wish I could, I can’t stop thinking about U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and his alleged Twitter endorsement of a porn site. By now, we’re all familiar with the story. It all happened as Texas’ Gulf Coast was still soaked to the bone by Hurricane Harvey, and Florida and the Caribbean were steel drum deep in Irma’s deluge. Apparently undeterred by these Biblical-level weather events, “someone” with access to Cruz’s Twitter feed put a “like” on a spell-check evading entry titled “Sexuall Posts”. But it wasn’t Ted who had given a thumbs-up (or whatever appendage you prefer) to this online porn. Nope. No way. It wasn’t him. Honest. “It was not me,” Cruz told CNN’s Dana Bash, adding that the endorsement was “an honest mistake” committed by a staffer who apparently had a little too much time— or something—on his or her hands. “I promise you, the staffer feels terrible. It was a staffing issue and it was inadvertent, it was a mistake, it was not a deliberate action,” Cruz added in other news sources. “We’re dealing with it internally but it was a mistake, it was not malicious conduct.” Screenwriter and generally funny guy Craig Mazin wasn’t having it. Shortly after the “Sexuall Posts” tweet story broke, Mazing himself tweeted: “Sadly, the fact that Ted Cruz jacks off to mediocre porn spam is the most human thing we can say about him. This is actually his high point.” Mazin should know. He was Cruz’s roommate at Princeton University in 1988, and claims to have witnessed first hand (sorry) Cruz’s propensity for selfsalami slapping. “Imagine Ted Cruz is doing this four feet below you in the bottom bunk bed” Mazin added. Pardon me while I take time to refocus; that image caused my eyes to roll all the way back inside my skull and now they’re stuck. This isn’t the first time Cruz has found himself in a porn-y pickle. Many of us can remember way back to the early 2000’s when he worked for Texas’ then-attorney general/now-governor Greg Abbott. One of that duo’s most headline-catching activities was their defense of an archaic state law that restricted sales of dildoes. Because, you know, priorities. MotherJones.com reports that Cruz’s defending brief at that time compared “the use of sex toys to ‘hiring a willing prostitute or engaging in consensual bigamy,’ and it equated advertising +1 Google+ Find us on P F Facebook.com & P
these products with the commercial promotion of prostitution.” Finally, in 2008, the Texas Court of Appeals told Cruz to keep his grubby hands off his fellow Texans’ silicone dicks. Happy ending, so to speak. Continuing his recent “not mea Twitter culpa” CNN interview with Bash, Cruz defended that anti-dildo crusade. “The attorney general’s job is to defend the laws passed by the Texas legislature. One of those laws was a law restricting the sale of sex toys, which is a stupid law,” Cruz said without so much as a hint of irony or self-awareness. Then came possibly the most hypocritical statement to ever pass Cruz ‘s curly little lips: “Consenting adults should be able to do whatever they want in their bedrooms,” he said with an absolutely straight face. Does this mean that Cruz now embraces the fact that LGBTQ folk should be able to enjoy the same rights he and his wife Heidi do—even if only in the privacy of their own bedrooms, presumably with the doors locked, blinds drawn and an endless loop of The Gaithers’ Greatest Hits blaring on the 8-track hi-fi to drown out any offending moans of passion? It bears repeating: Ted Cruz actually said these words: “Consenting adults should be able to do whatever they want in their bedrooms.” Does this mean he believes consenting same-sex adult couples are also entitled to do whatever they want in their bedrooms? Really? Whatever? Have freaky sex? Have missionary-position sex? Have no sex? Invite a minister into the boudoir and get married? Plan a family and get busy with a turkey baster (does anyone still do that)? Curl up under the covers, watch The Parent Trap (the real one, starring Hayley Mills and Hayley Mills) and eat pizza? I know. Kinky. But back to my problem. As a free-lance writer, believe it or not, my assignments are not all gayness and glitter. My client roster is more diverse as the rainbow flag itself. And this month finds me covering an event where one of the keynote speakers is—yep, you guessed it—U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. My problem? How to accurately and intelligently report on the Senator’s speech while ignoring my mind’s image of him—I mean, his staffer—salaciously hunched over Twitter, doing what comes naturally. It burns. Help me. e

NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK
Celebrates activist couple Phyllis Martin and Del Lyon O
ctober is LGBT History Month, a time to share the history of a community whose stories are far too often neglected or ignored. Magination Press, the children’s book imprint of the American Psychological Association, is celebrating with a new children’s book about two pioneering lesbian activists: When You Look Out the Window: How Phyllis Martin and Del Lyon Built a Community. Written by Gayle E. Pitman, PhD and beautifully illustrated by Christopher Lyles, the book depicts Martin and Lyon pointing out landmarks through the city that can be seen out their window. Each landmark tells a piece of the story of one of San Francisco’s most legendary couples and how their work for LGBT rights transformed their community, sending ripple effects around the world. Written for children age four to eight, When You Look Out the Window includes a reading guide that explains how Martin and Lyon left their mark on each landmark pointed out. A note for parents, caregivers and educators provides information about why teaching LGBTQ history is important, suggestions for ways to use the book, and additional resources. “The stories of LGBTQ people have been left out of the history books for far too long, and all the more so when it comes to children’s books; too many children grow up without ever hearing about the brave men and women who helped bring about a world where LGBT identity is not something to hide or be ashamed
of,” said Pitman “In When You Look Out the Window, I hope to inspire children with Phyllis and Del’s story, showing them how their love for one another, their courage in being who they were in a homophobic era, and their dedication to social justice transformed San Francisco, and helped change the world.” Gayle E. Pitman, PhD, is a professor of psychology and women’s studies at Sacramento City College. Her teaching and writing focuses on gender and sexual orientation, and she has worked extensively with the LGBT community. She is also the author of This Day in June, which won the American Library Association’s 2015 Stonewall Book Award. This Day in June is a wildly whimsical, validating, and exuberant reflection of the LGBTQ community and welcomes kids to experience a pride celebration and share in a day when we are all united. Christopher Lyles has illustrated numerous books for children. Inspired by vintage graphics and antique surfaces, he uses collage and mixed media applications to create his art. He lives in a quiet New England town surrounded by wilderness. When he is not creating picture books, he enjoys spending time with his family and hiking the surrounding woods. Magination Press is an imprint of the American Psychological Association, the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States, and the largest association of psychologists worldwide. e +1 Google+ Find us on P F Facebook.com & P

NEW SURVEY FOR HIV/AIDS PATIENTS
Ranks diarrhea as number one gastrointestinal complaint N
apo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Napo), a human health company developing and commercializing novel gastrointestinal prescription products from plants used traditionally in rainforest areas, and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jaguar Health, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAGX) (Jaguar), announced today the results of a survey of 271 U.S. board certified gastroenterologists, which indicate that the number one gastrointestinal (GI) complaint for people living with HIV/AIDS is diarrhea. The study was conducted for Napo by Schlesinger Associates, a leading global data collection provider specializing in online surveys. “While it’s typically not the main reason patients come to see me, frequently my patients with HIV inform me that they suffer from chronic diarrhea. Worth noting, diarrhea appears to be more common in patients who have been HIV-positive for several years; this is most likely due to HIV enteropathy, which is the effect of the virus on the lining of the intestine,” noted Dr. Maurizio Bonacini, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. “Diarrhea is a significant problem in many HIV patients, and unfortunately, they think there is nothing they can do and that they just have to live with it.” Highlights of the survey of U.S. board certified gastroenterologists include:
93 percent of U.S. gastroenterologists see patients with HIV/AIDS in their practice
84 percent rank diarrhea in the top three complaints of HIV/AIDS patients
53 percent indicated diarrhea is the number one
complaint in HIV/AIDS patients 65 percent of diarrhea in HIV/ AIDS patients is chronic Only 53 percent of gastroenterologists were aware of Mytesi® (crofelemer), the only drug that has been specifically studied in and FDA-approved for use in managing diarrhea in people living with HIV. “Chronic diarrhea remains a significant, underreported complaint of HIV/AIDS patients, and it is a problem that will increase significantly as the HIV+ population gets older. According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, by 2020 more than 70 percent of Americans with HIV
are expected to be 50 or older,” stated Lisa Conte, Jaguar’s president and CEO. “We are launching educational awareness campaigns to healthcare professionals, people living with HIV, and patient advocates. At the 2017 United States Conference on AIDS this past week, where Napo hosted a group of 20 healthcare activists and advocates, we heard patients discuss issues with diarrhea ranging from the impact on their quality of life, to embarrassment, to the concern over health implications when one has lost control of an important body function. Moreover, diarrhea is known to affect adherence to ART regimens. Lack of adherence to ART regimens raises concern over the potential for development of resistant viral strains. Treatment of diarrhea in this population remains an area of high need, and we are working to make sure both people living with HIV and their healthcare providers are aware of and have access to Mytesi®.” To view an infographic of the study results click here: http://enoughdiarrhea.com/infographic/. Launched by Napo in October 2016, Mytesi® is the only antidiarrheal studied in and U.S. FDA-approved for the symptomatic relief of noninfectious diarrhea in adults living with HIV/AIDS on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Mytesi® is a prescription treatment for diarrhea that works differently, by acting locally in the GI tract to normalize the flow of water. Mytesi® does not have drug-drug interactions with ART and has side effects that are similar to placebo. To learn more about what you can do about HIV/ AIDS-related diarrhea, visit www.mytesi.com. Methodology Napo sponsored the survey of 271 U.S. board certified gastroenterologists with Schlesinger Associates in July 2017. All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter on ‘freeing’ experience as a crossdresser, ‘corrupt’ music biz and support for his lesbian sister e By
T
Chris Azzopardi
yson Ritter strips down to nothing for the All-American Rejects’ new queer project. Fuzzy leopard-print top, blonde wig, fake eyelashes, low-cut skirt, stilettos – the frontman de-drags as he transforms from a prostitute, Betsy, to a seemingly married, suited-up man and life of the party, Robert. The 11-minute short film conceptualizes identity and authenticity through the complicated and ultimately haunting duality of a single person. “Sweat,” a swaggering glam-rocker,
Can you tell me about the concept of this short film and how you ended up using a crossdresser as your subject?
Jamie Thraves is a brilliant British film director who we were lucky enough – he’s actually FaceTiming me right now. Hang on. (Laughs) We’ve become brothers over this, but he approached us with a simple one-line concept that just said, “I see Tyson playing a woman and I see him playing a man named Robert whose fantasy is playing that woman.” It broadened beyond that through our correspondence because, of course, I had immediate questions for him about the story of Robert and the purpose of this film. Once we boiled it down, it was just this concept of identity and how people in all walks of life are never the same person in any room they walk into. I think Robert’s struggle to find himself was something that bled into my correspondence with Jamie, and we just
finds Betsy leaving her mark on the streets – and in a bathroom stall when things get hot and heavy with an androgynous hookup. But then, during the juxtaposing come-down “Close Your Eyes,” we discover, tragically, Robert’s “real” life comes at a price. As the alt-rockers mount a musical comeback with the two-song EP and a forthcoming album – their first since 2012’s Kids in the Street – Ritter, 33, opened up about his own femininity, being asexual for three years, his strong opinion on how “everybody’s selling celebrity” and being there for his lesbian sister when their family was not. +1 Google+ Find us on P F Facebook.com & P
started exploring all of our dark secrets together. It was really this cathartic thing to just talk about our lives and the regrets we’ve had and the compromising things we’ve done to become the person we were and are. How have you had to come to term with your own identity? Have you ever questioned your own sexuality?
I absolutely have. I went through a really bad breakup when I was in my mid ’20s and I was asexual for almost three years, just living in New York by myself, totally stone sober and trying to find myself. I was raised by my mom and my grandma, and that femininity and that balance within myself of the masculine and feminine has always been a yin-yang. It’s pushing and pulling, always. And I embrace that energy because I think some of the strongest

life. It’s incredible. People have been like, “Oh, you should journal about your tea time,” and I’m like, “No, this is precious to me and private.” A lot of people sell their time to their fans. Everybody is selling access now and I think that’s the fucking complete corruption of what’s going on with the music business. Everybody’s for sale in a completely different, fucked up way. Are you referring to certain mega pop stars who give themselves to their fans in charitable ways for the purpose of advertising their brand?
I mean, I can’t even touch that, man. Everybody’s selling celebrity. And we’re a band that only sells music, and that was the most important part about this visual journey for this band. I grew up in front of the record button since I was 16 – how much have you fucking changed since you were 16? It’s funny, people put these expectations on bands to sound the same, to stay in that little time capsule with their friends from high school and their dreams in their twin-size bed and it’s like, no, art has to grow up; the artist can grow up with you, man. And so that’s where we came at with this new offering of “Sweat”/”Close Your Eyes.” We’re coming back with purpose and I’m proud of that because, ultimately, I’m not trying to sell ad time on my Insta account. Everybody has to have access to you now and so it’s really kind of – I might be shooting myself in the foot because I’m not being this, you know, social whore that most people have to be to play in this crazy rat race of the music business. As someone who’s been acting for several years now, you may be aware of opposition to cis, white men acting as LGBT or queer. There’s been a lot of pushback regarding this. How conscious were you of that sentiment while developing the storyline for this video?
things about me are from what my mother and my Nannu gave me. I feel like most alt-rockers are comfortable exploring the gender spectrum.
Iggy, man. I was covering my body in glitter in 2009 and everybody thought I was a lunatic. People forget about the spectacle of rock ’n’ roll being something that is fearless. To be a superhero in a band is something that takes all powers. And when you’re on the stage and giving yourself to thousands of people, you have to be this cartoon; it’s beautiful to embrace that in your own life. These tea dates, where you meet with fans and have tea, which I love, aren’t exactly the most masculine thing. Have you had any tea dates with anyone from the queer community?
My tea dates have just started, so it’s been such a mixed bag of all walks of
I always knew that (Betsy) was a fantasy of Robert and it’s that suspension of disbelief that kept me grounded in the character. My wife helped me a lot. I just wanted to make sure that I grabbed onto all the femininity that I’m not afraid to show and put it into Betsy. I didn’t wanna approach the character half-assed at all, and as far as it being a risk to play that role, to me it was an escape and a surreal journey through a fantasy of Robert’s. At the heart of this story is a man named Robert who has a life and has a purpose, and I was serving him. So, I guess I didn’t feel like there was a compromise given that the character I was playing was the true heart of this journey.
What does she think of “Sweat”/“Close Your Eyes”?
She loves it. She was so proud of me. I was really nervous. I was like, “I hope you love it and I hope you think I did good.” And she called me and she still has that Southern voice: “Aw, man, ‘Sweat’ is so good. You did so good, bubba.” being able to embrace that was really a freeing thing. Honestly, it put me back in my own skin in a completely different way where even now on stage I’m finally feeling comfortable to embrace everything that I am. Growing up in Stillwater, Oklahoma, what was your introduction to the LGBT community?
My sister. I was 10 years old when my baby sister was born and my parents had a complex, tumultuous Oklahoma divorce, and I was there to sort of raise her in a lot of ways. When I had to get on the road when I was 16, leaving her was… even talking about it, it kind of echoes a heartbreak for me. We kept our correspondence, and as she grew, I was on the road. When she was 15, she came out. Getting the family’s acceptance in Oklahoma at 15 – I mean, probably one of the most difficult things I’ve had to help her survive. She helped me survive getting through just being an artist, too, because my parents haven’t always supported me. So we were holding each other’s hand as she got to 18, and now she’s engaged to be married. But I kind of saw a lot of (the LGBT community) through her eyes. There are few things harder than not being accepted for who you are, but it sounds like you had each other to lean on. We did. At Christmases we were holding each other in the corner. We were the two weirdos, but at least we had each other.
There’s an album in the works. What can the gay community look forward to?
This music is gonna be out, man. This isn’t gonna be an All-American Rejects record. This is a record that is gonna feature a lot of evolution. People are either gonna be grabbing onto it or they’re gonna be letting go, and I welcome both.
You’ve given the LGBT community many encouraging songs over the years, including “Move Along.” Can we expect more along those lines?
I realize that, in these divisive times, there is so much hate and division. The thing that breaks my heart right now in the world is just how divided we are. Even my parents didn’t go through this shit. I think it’s pouring out of me right now, so the things that I see and feel in the world are the things that I’m gonna be writing about. There are gonna be songs for people who just want to sing out as an escape, but this isn’t gonna be empathetic pandering – rock ’n’ roll is the escape, man, and I feel like we’ve lost that sentiment with celebrity. People are forgetting about the music. When you come to a Rejects show, it’s non-denominational; it’s a congregation of people who are there to let go of the outside world. The greatest thing that we can do as a people is gather without any sort of ill-will, especially nowadays. So, the beautiful thing about this next Rejects record? It’s gonna be something that sets people free. That’s what it’s doing for me, man. e

In what ways do you identify with Betsy when it comes to any overlapping femininity?
I think that’s precious to me. I think if there is overlap, just top to bottom, it was the curation of getting her walk down. I would wake up almost every day and put on my heels and walk around my house for hours on end to find my gesticulations and where Betsy carries herself. I think it was some of (my) stage persona. There’s a crazy confidence to Betsy that I loved being able to embrace and Robert didn’t have that. Robert’s this guy who hides from himself, and I think +1 Google+ Find us on P F Facebook.com & P

To thaw a frozen puff pastry, let sit in the refrigerator for 24 hours or on the counter for 30 minutes to one hour. Melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Add shallots and garlic, and cook until softened, for about two minutes. Stir in flour and cook until golden, for about 30 seconds. Slowly whisk in milk, and bring to a simmer. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, about three minutes. Remove from heat and stir in Parmesan until melted. Stir in spinach, salt, and pepper until combined. Transfer spinach mixture to bowl and let cool completely. Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease rimmed baking sheet. Roll one thawed puff pastry sheet into 14 by 10-inch rectangle on lightly floured counter. Loosely roll dough around rolling pin and unroll it onto prepared baking sheet. Brush border with egg. Spread spinach evenly over dough, leaving 1/2 inch border, and making sure the filling has cooled completely before assembling the pie. Roll remaining puff pastry sheet into 14 x 10 inch rectangle on lightly floured counter. Loosely roll dough a round rolling pin and unroll it over filling. Press edges of top and bottom sheets together to seal. Roll edge inward and use your fingers to crimp edge. Using sharp knife, cut dough into 24 squares. Brush top dough evenly with egg. Bake until crust is golden brown, for 30 to 35 minutes.

Transfer sheet to wire rack on counter to cool completely, about 30 minutes. Transfer pie to cutting board and slice along lines. Ready to serve. CHICKEN THIGHS WITH GREEN BEAN AND MUSTARD SAUCE.
8 bone-in chicken thighs, trimmed 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 pound green bean, trimmed 1 small shallot, minced 1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 cup dry white wine 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard Salt and pepper
Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 450 degrees. Pat chicken dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper. Melt one tablespoon butter in 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook until browned both sides, about ten minutes. Transfer chicken, skin side up, to rimmed baking sheet. Add green beans to middle of sheet and sprinkle with approximately 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Bake until chicken registers 175 degrees and green beans are tender, or for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, pour off all but one tablespoon fat from skillet. Add shallots, garlic,1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper and cook over medium heat until softened for about two minutes. Stir in wine and mustard, scraping any browned bits, and simmer until slightly thickened for about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in remaining two tablespoons of butter. Serve chicken and green beans with sauce. BACON-BRAISED RED POTATOES. 1-1/2 pounds small red potatoes, unpeeled and halved 2-1/2 cups water 1 onion, halved and sliced into 1/2 inch slices 2 slices thick cut bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped Salt and pepper, to taste
Arrange potatoes, cut side down, in a single layer in a 12-inch nonstick skillet. Add water, onion, bacon, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Bring to simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium, cover and simmer until potatoes are just tender, 18 to 20 minutes. Uncover skillet and increase heat to medium-high. Simmer well until water has nearly evaporated and potatoes begin to sizzle, about 10 minutes. Continue to cook five to seven minutes longer, stirring occasionally until potatoes and onion are spotty brown and bacon is rendered completely. Remove from heat and stir in thyme. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ready to serve with main dish. e Paula Dream, AKA Kale Haygood, owns Beyond Service, a Montrose-based home-cooking catering company. Foodie Diaries
Chapman & Kirby ceviche
After Harvey, we help others and then we eat e By
I
Jim Ayres
t’s funny how a simple fact about my life can change in the blink of an eye. I started the last edition of Foodie Diaries by saying I rarely venture downtown. After Hurricane Harvey, that changed. I’ve been downtown a lot lately, mostly dropping off donations and offering a comforting word or helping hand where I could. It’s been amazing to see this city come together in a time of crisis, as it always does, in good times and bad. I wondered aloud if this was the right time to write about restaurants. After all, to so many of the faces I saw, getting food—any food—was a top priority. Luckily, some of Houston’s greatest restaurants dedicated the days after Harvey to feeding first responders and those in need. Frank’s Pizza, Reef, Coltivare, The Pass & Provisions and Underbelly are just a few places that opened their kitchens. Many more are holding fundraisers this month to raise money for Harvey relief. Want to know where you can eat (and drink) to help the efforts? Check houstonfoodfinder.com, where information is updated regularly. Back to my dilemma, however. We’ve been resilient, and Houston is slowly but surely returning to a life as normal as it can be after a life-changing storm. People are starting to get out. Then came a note from the MONTROSE STAR’s unsinkable copy editor, Nancy Ford: “Thank goodness we all weathered the storm last week—pun intended. I am so grateful. We’re a tough bunch, ain’t we?” My mission was clear and my discoveries of newly-opened downtown area eateries continued apace.
It was a quick jaunt underneath 59 (I’m still finding it hard to say I-69) to St. Emanuel, a street I’d previously known for Warehouse Live’s BCBC events and Huyhn, a terrific Vietnamese restaurant. BBVA Compass Stadium and thousands of apartments have sprung up since, bringing a young professional population that’s hungry and ready to party. Turn the corner onto Lamar and you’ll find Chapman & Kirby, the shining star of this rising EaDo area. First gaining buzz during the Super Bowl when Drake reserved the facility for his exclusive soirees, its imposing tarnished copper entry reveals a beautiful interior. The lighting, the furnishings… no expense was spared here. Chapman & Kirby is a gastropub, first and foremost. There’s a selection of specialty cocktails (I recommend any of the tequila-based drinks named after Houston roadways), and beers on tap are all local. The food menu may read like a bar bites greatest hits, but everything is well prepared and presented. I especially liked the Texas Beer Battered Chicken Tenders, the Mushroom Swiss Bourbon Glaze Burger and the Asian Crunch Salad. And who can resist just a bite of a Candied Bacon appetizer? Not me! Right now, Chapman & Kirby is open only Wednesday through Ġ Sat › w ith Sunday Brunch promised soon. It’s a great addition to the neighborhood. e

ately it seems that everywhere we look there is some cataclysmic event or catastrophic threat that is wreaking havoc upon the earth and we, the inhabitants. To put it bluntly, these are scary times and many people are asking a lot of questions. Some are offering all sorts of answers. Back in the 1960s, a cute little country singer Skeeter Davis released a song that was to become a huge hit which, over the years, has been covered by many singers and groups. Though the song “End of the World” is about the aching pain of losing love, some of the lyrics ring true for today’s collective feelings and attitude.
Across the Causeway
“Why does the sun go on shining? Why does the sea rush to the shore? Don’t they know it’s the end of the world?” They go on shining and rushing to the shore because they know it is not the end of the world! This is not the first time in the history of our beautiful planet that so many rotten things have happened in such close succession. These days we have media overload, social media and multiple sources to view and hear of everything that happens, as these things happen. In most cases, it has just become too much. In recent weeks we have experienced hurricanes, massive flooding, earthquakes, wildfires, a solar eclipse, threat of nuclear annihilation, hunger, disease and a myriad of other negatives that are causing even learned people to wonder if the end
is near. As my dear, old grandfather would say, “Poppycock!” There are those that attribute the horrible events to a climatic change. “We have destroyed the earth…Mother Earth is fighting back…sending a message.” The holier-than-thou un-holies (ass-holies?) are saying “God is punishing man!” The real impotent-ates, those who brag about being “called by God” are stating the world is being punished because of the “sin of homosexuality!” “It is the same as in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah….” I know folks whom I have always thought of as rather bright and somewhat above the earthworm, who are sending me crazy, cafeteria-style pluckings from their gingham-covered bibles, proving it is the end because, “It is in the Bible!” Give me a break (and I am not talking femur or humerus)!
How absolutely stupid can people be? Anyone can take any issue they want and dig around in the Bible and find some “hidden clue” or stories that parallel or foretell any message they want to cram down the throat
of mankind. As Karl Max stated, “Religion is the opiate of the masses.” Indeed! We are in more than one kind of opiate epidemic! Is there a “lesson” to be learned or some great teaching from all that is happening around us in our world? Yes, I think there is. Humans are being called to help one another and love each other, no matter their color, beliefs, sexuality, age or anything. We are being forced to forget self and look at our neighbors and those suffering and in pain around us. We have seen it over and over in the past few weeks, strangers helping strangers, enemies forgetting their differences and doing what they can to alleviate the suffering of others. Kindness has come back; caring is all over the media. Maybe this is the “Big Message” we are supposed to get. God, Goddess, Mother Earth (or whatever deity you prefer) does not punish, no matter the religion, belief system or association. Ancient philosophers taught there must be balance to everything—good and bad, light and dark, etc. We must as humans come to the understanding that for so long now, we have neglected each other, slammed labels on people, marginalized so many and created a world driven by selfishness and greet. Maybe this is a wake-up call. It is happening, people helping people. We see it on the news and read it in our papers. Strangers cry for the loss, pain and devastation of those affected by these events. In these trying times, we bear witness that all humans are connected and the golden thread is spirit—that innate thing that
makes us human. As LGBTQ men and women, we are now perhaps more than ever being given a chance to shine and show our spirit as we work to help in communities destroyed by these catastrophes. I have seen so many LGBTQ groups and organizations working to save people, pets, clean houses, provide food and care, legal assistance and tremendous financial aid through fundraising. This is what we do! Believe me, people are looking, and our good works are noticed, appreciated and changing the way some have looked upon us in the past. This mess is our opportunity to put the lies and misconceptions to rest, to show that we truly do belong and are caring, integrated individuals, regardless of what our government, churches and great “ass-holinesses” say. As LGBTQ communities all across the globe come together and work to clean up, heal and bring light where there is darkness, we must make a difference and do so in loving and positive ways. The stars keep shining and the sea rushes to the shore because we will settle for nothing less as we collectively overcome the hurdles that have come our way. Peace to all and may love abide. e

He says he is a “raconteur with a quixotic, gypsy spirit.” He has written for several newspapers and magazines as well as other writing pursuits, including a novel and collection of short stories.

8 reasons i’m a gay man who prefers female strip clubs e By
mikey roX
M
aybe it’s just me – and it probably is, according to my fellow gay male friends – but I prefer a greasy-poled female strip club to a beefcake revue any day. Here are eight reasons why.
1
. Rogue dicks don’t come flying at my face
Let me get this straight first: I’m not a super-fan of strip clubs. It’s not like I’m there every chance I get. In fact, I’ve only been to a handful in my day, but in hindsight I’ve had more fun at a traditional gentlemen’s club than a gay joint. Sure, the naughty atmosphere is exciting, but I don’t get off on stuffing exotic dancers’ tube socks full of my hard-earned singles, so I generally drink and socialize without much regardp for what’s happening on stage, no matter whose junk is out. My lack of undivided attention doesn’t always go over well with the “entertainment,” like the “firefighter” who smacked me on the head with his “hose” during his “performance” because my back was turned to him. Guess the “six foot rule” didn’t apply there.
My friend Brooke relates another tale of cockiness gone awry. “I knew someone who was at a male strip club and something flew off (the stripper’s) dick into her eye. She had to go to the hospital; turns out it was pubic lice,” she recalls. “I’m not gay, but I’ll take a pair of titties over crabs helicoptering off a dick any day.”
2
. BOOBIES!
I’m strangely fascinated by females’ breasts’ buoyancy. My buddies’ girlfriends usually let me take theirs for a test drive – much to my buddies’ dismay (especially Kevin) – but I have to limit those occasions, lest I be branded the homo who’s always touching somebody’s tits at the party. The ladies at the club, however – well, they let me satisfy this odd craving for an affordable five dollars. Fair price.
3
5
. Gay-for-pay dancers turn me off
It’s not like I want to go home with a male stripper, but if I wanted to go home with a male stripper I’d like to know that for $100 an hour he enjoys sucking my beautiful cock. Anything else is just a waste of my time and money.
6
. A bar full of horny straight guys is a challenge I willingly accept
I perfected the art of bedding “straight” dudes during my time in a fraternity, which makes a room full of drunken bros with boners and broken egos motherfucking amateur hour.
7
. I like to root for the underdogs
All eyes are on the skinny bitches grinding the stage, but I prefer the big girls with ass and confidence to spare. I once watched this portly chick with gladiator sandals tied around her calves like twine on a holiday ham slink around the pole with the ease of a giant elf sliding down a chimney on Christmas Eve. She got extra drizzle.
8
. Nudie man bars are increasingly hard to find
Even if I wanted to go to male strip clubs more often, I couldn’t. Full-nudity male clubs are increasingly harder to find – thanks to America’s nouveau Puritans – with most states outlawing them altogether. I prefer a little mystery anyway. What’s underneath the banana hammock? My imagination usually serve me better than reality. e Mikey Rox is an award-winning journalist and LGBT lifestyle expert whose work has been published in more than 100 outlets across the world. He splits his time between homes in New York City and the Jersey Shore with his dog Jaxon. Connect with Mikey on Twitter @mikeyrox.
. I enjoy giving my unsolicited financial advice to single mothers
When I’m not delivering sage advice and anecdotes via this celebrated column, I’m writing about money matters as a fairly successful personal finance expert. Day in and day out I practice savvy spending and saving tactics, which I teach in earnest to those in need (or really anybody who’ll listen), and the strip club is like Sunday service for my financial sermon.
4
. Female dancers don’t pressure me into buying drinks or lap dances
If the meth heads at the male strip club aren’t hustling behind-thecurtain action, they’re trying to shake you down for a drink or prescription meds – in my experience, at least. But as soon as you tell the strippers at the vagina store that you’re gay, they cozy up for a cocktail and conversation with zero expectations, a.k.a. the perfect date.

Cara Delevingne lines up Carnival Row
e By
romeo saN viceNte
he’s still less known as an actress than as a model – we just saw her in the pages of the new September issue of Vogue over our morning tea, honestly – but really that’s not Cara Delevingne’s fault. The bisexual actress was a charming presence in the indie Paper Towns, and you can’t blame her for the disastrous one-two box office failures of Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets and Tulip Fever (both still in theaters now if you hurry). And the camera, obviously, loves her. So it’s good news to us that she’s just signed on to star in the new Amazon series, Carnival Row, alongside Orlando Bloom. The show is described as a fantasy noir that takes place in a neo-Victorian city populated by mythical creatures, and Delevingne will play a fairy-like refugee named Vignette Stonemoss. And why not? We saw the giddily strange Valerian, and Carnival Row will have to work overtime to be as wildly fantastical as that one, so we’re not even a little shocked by any of these details. Most of all, we’re glad to see this currently underrated performer get more screen time. The Wedding tackles conservative religious culture Nikohl Boosheri is one to watch. Currently the Persian Canadian actress is making a name for herself playing a headstrong Muslim lesbian artist on Freeform’s series The Bold Type. She also starred in the 2011 indie Circumstance, as an Iranian teenager exploring queer sexuality, among other taboos. And now she’s involved with filmmaker Sam Abbas for his debut feature, The Wedding. Abbas wrote the screenplay, and is also directing and starring in the story of a young Muslim man who is also exploring queer sexuality in strict conservative religious and cultural environment. And while Abbas is the ringleader of this project, we have to admit that Boosheri’s rising star and LGBTQ-centric career path to date has us especially intrigued to know where she’ll go next. The film also stars Israeli actress Ruba Blal (Sand Storm, The Bubble) and filming is underway. Look for The Wedding at your nearest queer film festival, most likely in 2018. Andre Leon Talley gets his own documentary, thank god In the documentary, The September Issue, Andre Leon Talley is the imposing arbiter of taste who shouts, “There is a famine of beauty!” while Vera Wang sits next to him and holds up her hand to testify to his truth. It’s a scene everyone should watch over and over daily, and if you don’t do that then there’s probably something wrong with you. The man needed his own documentary, though, because his importance in fashion and queerness in general is not to be underestimated. And that’s why we’re

thrilled to announce the premiere of The Gospel According to Andre, taking place at the Toronto International Film Festival as we speak. The film will cover the life and work of one of fashion’s most vibrant stylists and Vogue personalities – where he worked for years alongside the legendary Diana Vreeland and then Anna Wintour – before becoming the fiercest of judges on America’s Next Top Model. After its Toronto bow, please wait breathlessly for its general release to theaters, and when it arrives, wear an enormous brocade cape as you walk up to the box office for your ticket. That’s how it’s done. Freddie Mercury biopic rounds out cast At long last, after so many fits and starts, they’re calling the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, and gay director Bryan Singer will steer the ship. Critically acclaimed Mr. Robot star Rami Malek will play Mercury, and his bandmates in Queen will be UK actors Gwilym Lee, Joseph Mazzello and X-Men Apocalypse star Ben Hardy. But we’d be lying if we weren’t even a little more excited about the latest cast addition, Allen Leech. Leech, you will recall if you were even half a fan of Downton Abbey, played the sexy, Socialist chauffeur who married his way into the aristocracy on that series. And he did the most shirt-takeoffing of any man in the cast, which is always important. In Rhapsody he’ll play a much less sympathetic character: Mercury’s manager, Paul Prenter, whose place in Queen history involves him having been paid to out Mercury’s HIV status to British tabloids. The story may be tragic, but we’re anxiously anticipating this one all the same. It’s currently still in pre-production, so fingers crossed for a 2018 release. e
Romeo San Vicente’s has, in fact, been a bed of roses and a pleasure cruise.
