arch Madness is going full throttle. Houston will be beset with college basketball players here for the Final Four being played April 2 through 4 at NRG Stadium. History was made in the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament when Seton Hall’s Derrick Gordon became the first openly gay man to play a tournament game. Here’s what we’ve been reading at Houston Rainbow Herald (HRH).

T H E S TA R C O N T R I B U T I N G W R I T E R S

DJ JD ARNOLD hails from England, but has been spinning in the Lone Star State since the 80’s. He has spun records all over Houston, from the Venture N to Rich’s, as well as writing for Billboard Magazine. His dynamic sounds can now be enjoyed at Eagle Houston.

JIM AYRES by day is an employee benefits and

human resources writer. By night he turns his creativity toward the local food and restaurant scene. Do you know of a restaurant that needs a review? Info@ montrose-star.com

JOHN BUCHANAN is originally from Florida but

now calls Houston home for 20+ years. “Proud to be Gay and part of the Community – Your Gay Realtor of Choice!” johnwb214@aol.com

NANCY FORD has enjoyed a front row seat to the

most remarkable and sparkly Cultural Revolution in the history of mankind. “What a world!” She reflects appropriately. After moving to Houston from Ohio in 1981, Ford became a highly visible player in Texas’ LGBT publishing circles as an editor and contributor to myriad other local and statewide LGBT magazines and newspapers.

MARK KARIEL is from Marshall, Texas, but has

called Houston home for almost 40 years. An accounting supervisor by day, he can be found working most Saturday nights at South Beach’s RuPaul’s Drag Race events. His RuPaul obsession began 6 years ago in Palm Springs. It will all be in his book, plus much more. Stay tuned! mark@sobehouston.com

FOREST RIGGS is no stranger to the adventures of life, he bills himself as a “raconteur with a gypsy spirit.” A former educator, public speaker, hospital administrator, counselor and gay B&B owner, he was instrumental in the formation of OutSmart Magazine in the early 1990s. He has written for several newspapers, magazines and other publications. Recently he completed a collection of short stories about his beloved Galveston and is working on a novel. He currently resides on the island where he can be found wasting bait and searching for the meaning of life. JOHNNY TRLICA has called the Houston area

home all of his life. Four years ago he founded and still edits the Houston Rainbow Herald and has worked in the apartment leasing industry for the past two years. His passion is keeping the battle for LGBT rights at the forefront of today’s headlines and fighting complacency in the LGBT community.

‘I’m sorry’ So rarely do politicians admit to a mistake, it becomes big news when they do. Hillary Clinton stepped in it when she praised Nancy Reagan for her advocacy on HIV/AIDS, reports the Washington Post. “It may be hard for your viewers to remember how difficult it was for people to talk about HIV/ AIDS in the 1980s,” Clinton said. “And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan—in particular Mrs. Reagan—we started a national conversation.” That’s not exactly the way the LGBT community remembers it. The Reagan administration has long been remembered for its failure to act during the early days of the AIDS crisis with the President not addressing the issue until 1987, six years after it had been recognized as a serious public health problem. “While the Reagans were strong advocates for stem cell research and finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, I misspoke about their record on HIV and AIDS,” Clinton said in a statement. “For that, I’m sorry.” March Madness concerts Speaking of March Madness, try getting into a free Pit Bull Concert. The 2016 March Madness Music Festival announced the lineup of the free three-day event at Discovery Green, April 1 through 3, reports CultureMap.com. The festival will kick off on April 1 with an AT&T Block Party featuring performances by Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco. Jason Derulo will headline the Coca-Cola Music Mix on April 2. Then on April 3 Pitbull, Flo Rida and Maroon 5 will perform at the Capital One JamFest. The entire three-day music festival is open to the public on a first-come basis. Bye, Felicia Another one bit the dust. Florida Senator Marco Rubio bowed out of the race to in his quest secure the Republican presidential nomination after an embarrassing loss in his home state, reports GayStarNews.com. The first-term U.S. Senator is a staunch advocate for overturning the Supreme Court’s marriage equality ruling. GSN writes: “Last month, Rubio stepped up his opposition to same-sex marriage which was made legal in all 50 states by the US Supreme Court last June. He seemed to signal that if elected he would propose a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage when he said at a debate: ‘We are going to be a country that says a marriage is between one man and one woman.’” Super Bowl leverage As we’ve written here before, moves to legalize discrimination against LGBT people in the name of religious freedom are moving forward. In Georgia, HB 757 is awaiting Governor Nathan Deal’s signature, reports the WashingtonBlade.com. The bill would allow faith-based organizations to deny services or employment to individuals in a manner “that violate

such faith-based organization’s sincerely held religious belief.” The bill also contains language similar to the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act, although the bill says it can’t be invoked for “discrimination on any grounds prohibited by federal or state law.” The National Football League is speaking out against the “religious freedom” bill suggesting hopes for Atlanta to host future Super Bowls could be in jeopardy if the measure becomes law. Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesperson, issued a warning about passage of the bill in a statement: “NFL policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness, and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other improper standard. Whether the laws and regulations of a state and local community are consistent with these policies would be one of many factors NFL owners may use to evaluate potential Super Bowl host sites.” ‘End of the Rainbow’ Before her untimely but inevitable death in 1969, Judy Garland had endeared herself as a gay icon, and remains so today. Often hailed as “the world’s greatest entertainer,” Judy lives on in the Stages Repertory Theatre’s production of End of the Rainbow. The Houston Press published a rave review, saying in part: “Stage magic is a wonderful thing. And all of us realize it doesn’t happen every time we go to the theater. To be truthful, it rarely happens. But when it does, it can curl your toes! Go see Carolyn Johnson as Judy Garland at Stages Rep in Peter Quilter’s bio, End of the Rainbow and witness pure stage prestidigitation. Your toes will never be the same.” The review adds: “But if you think that extraspecial, eerie Garland magic is untranslatable anymore, witness the transformation by Johnson. It is astonishing. She’s playing Garland at the end of her life. Recently off drugs and alcohol, with new fiancé/ manager in tow (H.R. Bradford), and her trusted gay pianist (L. Jay Meyer) called back into service after a disastrous concert tour in Australia, she’s in London in 1968 for yet another comeback concert. Her hotel suite at the Ritz is radiantly conjured by set designer Kristina Marie Miller with claret drapery, stenciled wainscoting, gilded molding and shaded sconces. It is rich and warm, everything Garland no longer is.” End of the Rainbow continues through April 10 at Stages Repertory Theatre. PEOPLE WILL TALK:

The idea of LBD (lesbian bed death) makes people nervous, if you go a few days or a few weeks without having sex. You go, ‘Oh no, is this lesbian bed death? Is this how it starts?’ The reality is subsequent studies have shown that all people in long-term relationships find that the frequency of their sex lives decreases, then tends to plateau and stay H.R. Bradford ( below what it was in the first year. (But) lesbian couples report longer sexual encounters. So while they’re having sex less frequently, they’re having sex for longer, and they report similar satisfaction with their sex lives as their heterosexual counterparts.

To be honest with you, I stopped using condoms after going on PrEP. I was such a big proponent of PrEP that if I was chatting with someone on a hookup site who wanted to use condoms, it was a deal-breaker for me. I was having sex to enjoy it. And if I was wearing a condom or the other person was wearing a condom, I wouldn’t enjoy it.

This is the way we are going to break through…in a way that (U.N.) resolutions and statements never can. It’s about imagining oneself. It’s about imagining one’s child. It’s about imagining one’s father. It takes time to change the DNA of the U.N. just as it’s taken a lot of time to change the DNA of the United States.

—United Nations Samantha Power, after taking 17 U.N. ambassadors to a Broadway theater to see the Tony Award-winning play Fun Home, based on the autobiographical graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. The play’s main character is a lesbian with a closeted gay dad. I think generally queers are not mixed with kids—especially drag queens. It’s really beautiful to have drag queens painting children’s faces and telling stories. It’s disrupting that idea that queers can’t mix with kids. It’s a kid’s world to be very imaginative. If children were allowed they would dress up every day. I don’t think they’re thinking about gender assumptions. They’re just seeing the drag queens as other people who are being imaginative. I appreciated how their parents allow them to be creative and imaginative.

— Juliana Delgado Lopera, executive director of Radar Productions, a nonprofit organization partnering with the San Francisco Public Library to present “Drag Queen Story Hour” in which drag queens read stories to children in a library setting. In fact, Cruz has been endorsed by—and has not renounced—virtually every frightening, apocalyptic, wackadoodle preacher in the land, from Mike Bickle of Kansas City, who preaches that God is going to ‘raise up’ somebody in the End Times to hunt down all the Jews who have failed to convert to Christianity, to Bob Vander Plaats of Iowa, who preaches that same-sex marriage is a Satanic plot to get people to marry their own children. Then there is Phil Robertson, the ZZ Topresembling reality TV personality from a show called Duck Dynasty, who denounces homosexuals as ‘wicked’ and ‘evil’ and sometimes takes the stage with Cruz while blowing urgently on a duck call.”

I like Ted Cruz. I think he’s very conservative, and a great constitutionalist, and a very articulate man. I haven’t endorsed him or anything like that. But I also think, he’s an evangelical Christian, and probably one of the worst ones when it comes to trans issues. Let’s say he goes on to be president, and I have all my girls on a trans issues board to advise him on making decisions when it comes to trans issues. Isn’t that a good idea? Wouldn’t it be great? IN GOOD COMPANY

Alan Cumming on sappy songs, bisexuality and his proudest moments e  By

Chris Azzopardi

A

s a child, Alan Cumming cried as his older brother sang “Danny Boy” to him from across the bedroom they shared. “He would do it to make me cry,” Cumming says, recalling his reaction to the Irish staple. “It’s just the emotion of the song. I’m Scottish, so the ‘pipes’ are kind of a direct route to my tear ducts.” “Danny Boy” was the first song to break the singer-actor into pieces – but it wouldn’t be the last. There’d be Annie Lennox’s “Why” and Adele’s “Someone Like You” and Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes,” all of which are among the tearinducing tunes on the performer’s latest release, Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs: Live at the Café Carlyle. And when Cumming cries, it’s no act. Those are real tears. After all, this is not Broadway, where the actor has appeared in a mélange of shows including Macbeth and Cabaret, for which he won a Tony. Nor is this The Good Wife (he plays Eli Gold on the CBS show, which wraps in May). It’s also not Spy Kids or Smurfs or his U.S. film debut, 1997’s Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. On that Carlyle stage, Cumming is only one person: himself.

think it’s actually all right to show your emotion. In a way, the whole show is about me showing my emotions. The album’s coda is “The Ladies Who Lunch,” made famous by the late Elaine Stritch in _Company_ on Broadway. Elaine was a beloved presence at the Carlyle up until she performed her last show there in 2013. Is your performance of the song in that space a tribute to her?

Years ago I did a workshop with John Tiffany who directed me in Macbeth. We did this workshop of Company, and a lot of the couples’ genders were changed, so I was playing the Elaine Stritch role. I sang that song in the workshop. I thought it worked really well, but ultimately it didn’t go any further. Then

when I was doing this show I thought, “I can’t not sing that song at the home of Elaine Stritch.” When I was doing Cabaret, in my dressing room I would always turn on Elaine singing “Ladies Who Lunch” as the last song. Whenever it came on, it was time to go. Everyone would be quiet and listen to the song and then at the end everyone would go crazy and that was the end of the night. So, she has a very special place in my life in a lot of ways. By doing it in that venue, this is very much a tribute to her. Your résumé is expansive. When a gay guy stops you on the street, which career endeavor of yours are they most likely to compliment you on?

You’re pretty naked on that album cover. Are you wearing _anything_?

I’m not wearing anything! I was performing at the Carlyle and (photographer Jordan Matter and I) ended up texting dancers at 2 in the morning to see if they wanted to come over to the Carlyle and get naked. Two did, and we did that photo. Just took our clothes off at 2:30 in the morning. How do you explain your appreciation for music that makes you cry?

For me it’s about connecting personally. These songs are songs that have things in them that I can really understand. I feel my singing them makes people listen to them in a different way, maybe. But, really, they’re all songs that I felt compelled to sing because I connect to them in an emotional way. Which one resonates with you most?

I think it would be “Dinner at Eight.” I find that really quite difficult to get through some nights because I think about my dad. I do normally shed a tear during that song. Yeah, it’s really difficult, and you have to go with it and understand that it’s emotional because it’s an emotional song and you’re connected to it and the audience is really with you. I’m not incapable of getting through the song and I am really crying, but I think that’s all right. It makes sense. It’s a song that’s gonna be hard to sing. As long as there’s no falling to the floor into a heap of tears, I +1 Google+ Find us on P F Facebook.com & P

It’s very difficult to tell nowadays – it really is. You know, some mention the Romy and Michele thing. But now it’s really hard to tell. It may be my book ( Not My Father’s Son: A Memoir); it’s a variety of things. With lesbians, I know it’s always gonna be The L Word. Having accomplished as much as you have, what’s been a career highlight for you?

The things I’m most proud of are the things that are the most personal, the biggest challenges. I thought I was never going to be able to do Macbeth on Broadway. I thought I was going to die. Doing Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs is really an amazing thing because I am sort of being myself. Also, my book a couple of years ago – that

Montrose Star e | Wednesday March 23, 2016 | PAGE 9

was a great sort of achievement because it was a terrifying thing to do. It was so vulnerable. For me, personally, it’s the things that I might have failed at, or when I make myself really vulnerable in a personal way. Those are my best achievements. What about ones that were not your best achievements – do you regret those projects?

I don’t. If you’re happy where you are then it’s impossible to regret things, because everything you’ve done has made you who you are as a person and who you are at the moment. I get snarky journalists saying, “Why did you do this, blah, blah?” and I go, “Why do you think I did that?” Because it made money! People get a bit offended that you’ve done some commercial thing, but I did those things in order to do XYZ, (projects) that don’t make very much money. So, I’m actually doing you a favor by doing those things that make money. So I don’t really regret. I’m not a regretter. There are things I had a terrible time on, and at the time I was like, “Fuck, I didn’t know it was gonna be like this. I thought it was gonna be great fun,” but there were asshole people and the experience went wrong. Ultimately, there’s always something you can learn a lesson from. And nobody died, hopefully. As a bisexual person yourself, you’re known for being outspoken on bisexuality and gender fluidity. How do you explain bisexuality to people who still don’t get it?

I’m not here to change people’s minds about whether they believe in bisexuality. All I’m saying is that I think my sexuality and most people’s sexuality is gray. And yeah, I like cock. I love cock. But I also feel that I have an attraction to women. I’ve never lost it, actually. I’ve always been attracted to both sexes, and whether I act on it or not is not anyone’s business, really. I’m not going to close myself off to the possibility of

experience just because society says we must stick within these rigid boundaries. I find it really self-hating that the gay community, which has been so bullied, are especially the ones who might be chiding people about their bisexuality. I think, let everyone be who they are. The point I’m making is that it seems more ironic for a gay person to chide someone about their sexuality – they’re chiding all of us at heart. It seems particularly galling that that would be coming from a fellow LGBT person. I really do believe people today, especially young people, have a much more fluid idea about sexuality and gender, and I should think we’re in a really great place with the youth of today. It’s people who are a bit older who are still struggling with it. Reflecting on your early days as an activist: Why was it so important for you to start speaking out on LGBT issues?

I have a voice. I have a platform. I have a great life. I have a really great life, and I live the way I want to live. I am the person I want to be, and I feel like it’s my duty to take care of people who don’t have those opportunities. I have a personal connection to people who have been prejudiced against who are gay or bisexual or transgender. I’m Scottish and I grew up with fairness and justice. Where I come from, it’s very important that we adhere to making sure that everyone is looking after each other. So, it’s partly my genetic makeup (laughs), but also in the privileged position that I am in, I feel it’s my duty to give back and help other people along. Being an artist is understanding other people and wanting to reach and connect with other people, so helping other people is absolutely a part of that. When there’s injustice and persecution, I can’t really live in a society with that going on and not do something about it. e Chris Azzopardi is the editor of Q Syndicate, the international LGBT wire service. • ATRIPLA® (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) has been proven TO LOWER VIRAL LOAD to undetectable* in approximately 8 out of 10 adult patients new to therapy through 48 weeks compared to approximately 7 out of 10 adult patients in the comparator group • ATRIPLA has been proven TO LOWER VIRAL LOAD to undetectable* in approximately 7 out of every 10 adult patients new to therapy through 3 years compared to approximately 6 out of 10 in the comparator group† • The most common (at least 5%) moderate to severe side effects in patients on ATRIPLA were diarrhea, nausea, tiredness, depression, dizziness, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract infections, rash, headache, trouble sleeping, anxiety, and common cold. Each of these was reported in less than 10% of patients

Real ATRIPLA patient.

INDICATION INDICATION and IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION for ATRIPLA® (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate [DF]) What is ATRIPLA?

• Some people who have taken medicines like ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/ tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) have developed serious liver problems (hepatotoxicity), with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the liver (steatosis). In some cases, these liver problems can lead to death.

ATRIPLA is a prescription medication used alone as a complete regimen, or with other anti-HIV-1 medicines, to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children at least 12 years old who weigh at least 40 kg (88 lbs).

Call your healthcare provider right away if you get the following signs or symptoms of liver problems:

ATRIPLA does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS and you may continue to experience illnesses associated with HIV-1 infection, including opportunistic infections.

- urine turns dark

See your healthcare provider regularly while taking ATRIPLA.

- don’t feel like eating food for several days or longer

What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA can cause serious side effects: • Some people who have taken medicine like ATRIPLA (which contains nucleoside analogs) have developed lactic acidosis (build up of an acid in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a serious medical emergency that can lead to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get the following signs or symptoms of lactic acidosis: - feel cold, especially in your - feel very weak or tired arms and legs - have unusual (not normal) - feel dizzy or lightheaded muscle pain - have stomach pain with nausea and vomiting

- bowel movements (stools) turn light in color - feel sick to your stomach (nausea)

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

- have trouble breathing

- skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice)

- have a fast or irregular heartbeat

- have lower stomach area (abdominal) pain • You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking nucleoside analogcontaining medicines, like ATRIPLA, for a long time. • If you also have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and you stop taking ATRIPLA, you may get a “flare-up” of your hepatitis. A “flare-up” is when the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before. Patients with HBV who stop taking ATRIPLA need close medical follow-up for several months to check for hepatitis that could be getting worse. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of HBV, so you need to discuss your HBV therapy with your healthcare provider. Who should not take ATRIPLA? You and your healthcare provider should decide if ATRIPLA is right for you. Do not take ATRIPLA if you are allergic to ATRIPLA or any of its ingredients.

*Undetectable was defined as a viral load of fewer than 400 copies/mL. † In this study, 511 adult patients new to therapy received either the meds in ATRIPLA each taken once daily or Combivir® (lamivudine/zidovudine) twice daily + SUSTIVA® (efavirenz) once daily. ‡ Symphony Health Solutions, Source® PHAST Prescription Monthly, equivalized counts, July 2006 – June 2015.

With over 9 years of prescribing experience, ATRIPLA is the #1 prescribed one pill, once-daily HIV treatment‡ SELECTED IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION • Some people who have taken medicines like ATRIPLA have developed build up of lactic acid in the blood, which can be a serious medical emergency that can lead to death. • Some people who have taken medicines like ATRIPLA have developed serious liver problems, with liver enlargement and fat in the liver, which can lead to death. • If you also have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and you stop taking ATRIPLA, your hepatitis may suddenly get worse. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of HBV. Please see below for more information about these warnings, including signs and symptoms, and other Important Safety Information. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Ask your doctor about ATRIPLA today.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking ATRIPLA?

MEDICINES YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE WITH ATRIPLA

Tell your healthcare provider if you:

• ATRIPLA should not be taken with: Combivir® (lamivudine/zidovudine), COMPLERA® (emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate), EMTRIVA® (emtricitabine), Epivir® or Epivir-HBV® (lamivudine), Epzicom® (abacavir sulfate/lamivudine), STRIBILD® (elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF), Trizivir® (abacavir sulfate/lamivudine/zidovudine), TRUVADA® (emtricitabine/tenofovir DF), or VIREAD® (tenofovir DF), because they contain the same or similar active ingredients as ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). ATRIPLA should not be used with SUSTIVA® (efavirenz) unless recommended by your healthcare provider.

• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant: Women should not become pregnant while taking ATRIPLA and for 12 weeks after stopping ATRIPLA. Serious birth defects have been seen in children of women treated during pregnancy with efavirenz, one of the medicines in ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). Women must use a reliable form of barrier contraception, such as a condom or diaphragm, even if they also use other methods of birth control, while on ATRIPLA and for 12 weeks after stopping ATRIPLA. Women should not rely only on hormone-based birth control, such as pills, injections, or implants, because ATRIPLA may make these contraceptives ineffective. • Are breastfeeding: Women with HIV should not breastfeed because they can pass HIV and some of the medicines in ATRIPLA through their milk to the baby. It is not known if ATRIPLA could harm your baby.

• Vfend® (voriconazole) should not be taken with ATRIPLA since it may lose its effect or may increase the chance of having side effects from ATRIPLA. • ATRIPLA should not be used with HEPSERA® (adefovir dipivoxil).

• Have kidney problems or are undergoing kidney dialysis treatment.

These are not all the medicines that may cause problems if you take ATRIPLA. Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are taking or plan to take.

• Have bone problems.

Important Safety Information is continued on the following page.

• Have liver problems, including hepatitis B or C virus infection. Your healthcare provider Please see Patient Information on the following pages. may want to do tests to check your liver while you take ATRIPLA or may switch you to another medicine. • Have ever had mental illness or are using drugs or alcohol • Have ever had seizures or are taking medicine for seizures. Seizures have occurred in patients taking efavirenz, a component of ATRIPLA, generally in those with a history of seizures. If you have ever had seizures, or take medicine for seizures, your healthcare provider may want to switch you to another medicine or monitor you. What important information should I know about taking other medicines with ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA may change the effect of other medicines, including the ones for HIV-1, and may cause serious side effects. Your healthcare provider may change your other medicines or change their doses.

ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) Important Safety Information (continued) What are the possible side effects of ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA may cause the following additional serious side effects: • Serious psychiatric problems. Severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior have been reported by a small number of patients. Some patients have had thoughts of suicide, and a few have actually committed suicide. These problems may occur more often in patients who have had mental illness. • Kidney problems (including decline or failure of kidney function). If you have had kidney problems, or take other medicines that may cause kidney problems, your healthcare provider should do regular blood tests. Symptoms that may be related to kidney problems include a high volume of urine, thirst, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. • Other serious liver problems. Some patients have experienced serious liver problems, including liver failure resulting in transplantation or death. Most of these serious side effects occurred in patients with a chronic liver disease such as hepatitis infection, but there have also been a few reports in patients without any existing liver disease. • Changes in bone mineral density (thinning bones). Lab tests show changes in the bones of patients treated with tenofovir DF, a component of ATRIPLA. Some HIV patients treated with tenofovir DF developed thinning of the bones (osteopenia), which could lead to fractures. Also, bone pain and softening of the bone (which may lead to fractures) may occur as a consequence of kidney problems. If you have had bone problems in the past, your healthcare provider may want to do tests to check your bones or may prescribe medicines to help your bones. Common side effects: • Patients may have dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, and/or unusual dreams during treatment with ATRIPLA. These side effects may be reduced if you take ATRIPLA at bedtime on an empty stomach; they tend to go away after taking ATRIPLA for a few weeks. Tell your healthcare provider right away if any of these side effects continue or if they bother you. These symptoms may be more severe if ATRIPLA is used with alcohol and/or mood-altering (street) drugs. • If you are dizzy, have trouble concentrating, and/or are drowsy, avoid activities that may be dangerous, such as driving or operating machinery. • Rash is a common side effect with ATRIPLA that usually goes away without any change in treatment. Rash may be serious in a small number of patients. Rash occurs more commonly in children and may be a serious problem. If a rash develops, call your healthcare provider right away. • Other common side effects include: tiredness, upset stomach, vomiting, gas, and diarrhea. Other possible side effects: • Changes in body fat have been seen in some people taking anti-HIV-1 medicines. Increase of fat in the upper back and neck, breasts, and around the trunk may happen. Loss of fat from the legs, arms, and face may also happen. The cause and long-term health effects of these changes in body fat are not known. • Skin discoloration (small spots or freckles) may also happen. • In some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS), signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after anti-HIV treatment is started. If you notice any symptoms of infection, contact your healthcare provider right away. • Additional side effects are inflammation of the pancreas, allergic reaction (including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), shortness of breath, pain, stomach pain, weakness, and indigestion. This is not a complete list of side effects. Tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you notice any side effects while taking ATRIPLA. You should take ATRIPLA once daily on an empty stomach. Taking ATRIPLA at bedtime may make some side effects less bothersome. ATRIPLA® (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) • If you believe you took more than the prescribed amount of ATRIPLA, contact your local poison control center or emergency room right away. • Tell your healthcare provider if you start any new medicine or change how you take old ones. Your doses may need adjustment. • When your ATRIPLA supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider or pharmacy. This is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop resistance to ATRIPLA and become harder to treat. • Your healthcare provider may want to do blood tests to check for certain side effects while you take ATRIPLA.

Common si Patients may concentratin side effects stomach. Th few weeks. I not mean tha depression, right away if that these sy mood alterin

What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA? • Women should not become pregnant while taking ATRIPLA and for 12 weeks after stopping it. Serious birth defects have been seen in the babies of animals and women treated with efavirenz (a component of ATRIPLA) during pregnancy. It is not known whether efavirenz caused these defects. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you are pregnant. Also talk with your healthcare provider if you want to become pregnant. • Women should not rely only on hormone-based birth control, such as pills, injections, or implants, because ATRIPLA may make these contraceptives ineffective. Women must use a reliable form of barrier contraception, such as a condom or diaphragm, even if they also use other methods of birth control. Efavirenz, a component of ATRIPLA, may remain in your blood for a time after therapy is stopped. Therefore, you should continue to use contraceptive measures for 12 weeks after you stop taking ATRIPLA. • Do not breastfeed if you are taking ATRIPLA. Some of the medicines in ATRIPLA can be passed to your baby in your breast milk. We do not know whether it could harm your baby. Also, mothers with HIV-1 should not breastfeed because HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in the breast milk. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding. You should stop breastfeeding or may need to use a different medicine. • Taking ATRIPLA with alcohol or other medicines causing similar side effects as ATRIPLA, such as drowsiness, may increase those side effects. • Do not take any other medicines, including prescription and nonprescription medicines and herbal products, without checking with your healthcare provider. • Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 to others. • Do not share needles or other injection equipment. • Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like toothbrushes and razor blades. • Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safe sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood.

If you are diz may be dang

What are the possible side effects of ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA may cause the following serious side effects: • Lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a medical emergency and may need to be treated in the hospital. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get signs of lactic acidosis. (See “What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?”) • Serious liver problems (hepatotoxicity), with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the liver (steatosis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any signs of liver problems. (See “What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?”) • “Flare-ups” of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, in which the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before, can occur if you have HBV and you stop taking ATRIPLA. Your healthcare provider will monitor your condition for several months after stopping ATRIPLA if you have both HIV-1 and HBV infection and may recommend treatment for your HBV. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection. If you have advanced liver disease and stop treatment with ATRIPLA, the “flare-up” of hepatitis B may cause your liver function to decline. • Serious psychiatric problems. A small number of patients may experience severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior while taking ATRIPLA. Some patients have thoughts of suicide and a few have actually committed suicide. These problems may occur more often in patients who have had mental illness. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you think you are having these psychiatric symptoms, so your healthcare provider can decide if you should continue to take ATRIPLA. • Kidney problems (including decline or failure of kidney function). If you have had kidney problems in the past or take other medicines that can cause kidney problems, your healthcare provider should do regular blood tests to check your kidneys. Symptoms that may be related to kidney problems include a high volume of urine, thirst, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. • Other serious liver problems. Some patients have experienced serious liver problems including liver failure resulting in transplantation or death. Most of these serious side effects occurred in patients with a chronic liver disease such as hepatitis infection, but there have also been a few reports in patients without any existing liver disease. • Changes in bone mineral density (thinning bones). Laboratory tests show changes in the bones of patients treated with tenofovir DF, a component of ATRIPLA. Some HIV patients treated with tenofovir DF developed thinning of the bones (osteopenia) which could lead to fractures. If you have had bone problems in the past, your healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your bone mineral density or may prescribe medicines to help your bone mineral density. Additionally, bone pain and softening of the bone (which may contribute to fractures) may occur as a consequence of kidney problems.

ATRIPLA® (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) Common side effects: Patients may have dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, and/or unusual dreams during treatment with ATRIPLA. These side effects may be reduced if you take ATRIPLA at bedtime on an empty stomach. They also tend to go away after you have taken the medicine for a few weeks. If you have these common side effects, such as dizziness, it does not mean that you will also have serious psychiatric problems, such as severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior. Tell your healthcare provider right away if any of these side effects continue or if they bother you. It is possible that these symptoms may be more severe if ATRIPLA is used with alcohol or mood altering (street) drugs. If you are dizzy, have trouble concentrating, or are drowsy, avoid activities that may be dangerous, such as driving or operating machinery. Rash may be common. Rashes usually go away without any change in treatment. In a small number of patients, rash may be serious. If you develop a rash, call your healthcare provider right away. Rash may be a serious problem in some children. Tell your child’s healthcare provider right away if you notice rash or any other side effects while your child is taking ATRIPLA. Other common side effects include tiredness, upset stomach, vomiting, gas, and diarrhea. Other possible side effects with ATRIPLA: • Changes in body fat. Changes in body fat develop in some patients taking anti HIV-1 medicine. These changes may include an increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (“buffalo hump”), in the breasts, and around the trunk. Loss of fat from the legs, arms, and face may also happen. The cause and long-term health effects of these fat changes are not known. • Skin discoloration (small spots or freckles) may also happen with ATRIPLA. • In some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS), signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after anti-HIV treatment is started. It is believed that these symptoms are due to an improvement in the body’s immune response, enabling the body to fight infections that may have been present with no obvious symptoms. If you notice any symptoms of infection, please inform your doctor immediately. • Additional side effects are inflammation of the pancreas, allergic reaction (including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), shortness of breath, pain, stomach pain, weakness and indigestion. Tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you notice any side effects while taking ATRIPLA. Contact your healthcare provider before stopping ATRIPLA because of side effects or for any other reason. This is not a complete list of side effects possible with ATRIPLA. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a more complete list of side effects of ATRIPLA and all the medicines you will take. How do I store ATRIPLA? • Keep ATRIPLA and all other medicines out of reach of children. • Store ATRIPLA at room temperature 77°F (25°C). • Keep ATRIPLA in its original container and keep the container tightly closed. • Do not keep medicine that is out of date or that you no longer need. If you throw any medicines away make sure that children will not find them. General information about ATRIPLA: Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaflets. Do not use ATRIPLA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give ATRIPLA to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may harm them. This leaflet summarizes the most important information about ATRIPLA. If you would like more information, talk with your healthcare provider. You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for information about ATRIPLA that is written for health professionals. Do not use ATRIPLA if the seal over bottle opening is broken or missing. What are the ingredients of ATRIPLA? Active Ingredients: efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate Inactive Ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate. The film coating contains black iron oxide, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, red iron oxide, talc, and titanium dioxide. Hear Me Out

Sia, Panic! at the Disco e  by

chris azzopardi

Sia, This Is Acting Before she rebranded herself as a behind-the-scenes scribe for mainstream pop giants, Sia reveled in authenticity. Every feeling was pure – and even if it didn’t reflect her life, you believed it could. Remember “Breathe Me”? There was a big sigh, and then she broke you into a million sad, empowered pieces as she came clean one key change at a time. These days, having constructed a persona that’s distant and vague, that same Sia hides behind actual veils so as not to reveal too much of herself, generating hits for radio heavyweights like Adele and Beyoncé. So what happens when they and other pop stars pass on your songs? If you’re Sia, you record them yourself. Once again, Sia, following 1000 Forms of Fear, is larger than life. It’s a role she’s fine at playing – her distinctive warble packs a powerful punch – but it has become apparent that the same mask concealing her face is also obscuring the fact that Sia is a gifted storyteller full of things to say about herself. So if this is, indeed, acting, the bump-andgrind windup “Move Your Body” is either an Oscar winner… or a Razzie contender, depending on how you look at it. Same with “Sweet Design,” a very Bey-during-B’Day banger, with Sia singing contrived lines like, “Word travels fast when you’ve got an ass like mine.” Not that Sia doesn’t have a great ass, but it’s a hard, silly sell for an artist not known for such boasts. Her strengths lie in underdog anthems like “Bird Set Free,” where she pushes through the cage door and unleashes herself, singing, “I find myself in my melodies.” There are 11 other songs after “Bird Set Free,” none of them great, leaving you thinking: If only they, too, could find her essence again.

Panic! at the Disco, Death of a Bachelor You know how it goes with pop bands: Eventually the frontman becomes this red-hot superstud star whose spotlight-stealing ways make everyone forget the names of the other band members... or that they exist. Just ask Adam Levine. Unlike Levine, though, Panic! at the Disco’s most delicious dish, Brendon Urie, knows it’s time to seize his solo status and move on. So with Death of a Bachelor, he has. On his own, but still under the Panic! moniker, Urie doesn’t reshape the band considerably, at least not for now, not while he establishes himself as the Brendon Urie Band. It’s clear from this solo release, though, that all his shameless pop dreams are coming true, which is to say Urie is fixated on being your power-pop god. Boisterous rock booms throughout the album’s front-end, but so much of it is empty-calorie ear candy that fans will be longing for days of yore, when Ryan Ross and the rest of the band’s pre-breakup lineup were also a part of the creative process. With Death of a Bachelor, where’s the ambition that once set Panic! apart from other dude bands? The band’s delightfully wonky wordplay? Not on “Victorious,” the album’s first cheapshot of a single, a glossy grab stuck on a sound that’s highly commercial and mind-numbingly insipid. It rolls right into the grungy piano-interrupted “Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time,” better but typical. “Crazy=Genius” at least breaks the been-there-done-that mold with a fun old-timey swing sound, and it’s good to hear Urie take it down several notches on “Impossible Dream.” Still, though, Death of a Bachelor is a backwards evolution for a man still conceptualizing what it means to be on his own. e

s you read this, yours truly will be packing her bags for the annual spring trip to West Hollywood! Miss Paula is getting so excited that I just blew a fuse in my food processor, or was it the vibrator? I have three consecutive days of “priority” tickets to The Price Is Right. I’ve already been to three shows with no luck. They say the fourth, or fifth, or sixth is the charm, right? I just can’t wait to get these garters around ol’ Drew Carey. I hope I get lucky out in West Hollywood this time—and get on the game show, too! OK, let me “simmer” down and get to business. Many times I don’t have time to eat breakfast, so as I run out the door, I grab a package of granola bars to eat on the go. They are not too bad; I especially like the blueberry variety. They serve the purpose, but you do pay for the convenience at the grocery store. Then I realized I could make my own version of an on-the-go breakfast, and you can, too. I like to get the ingredients grocery stores where they have the nuts and fruits in bulk, where you can make your own variation. And you are going love the very quick and easy pork chops recipe for dinner!

» GRAB-AND-GO BREAKFAST BITES.

¼ cup honey 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup butter, room temperature 2 cups whole wheat flour 1 generous teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups chopped mixed nuts and dried fruit, combined 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 tablespoon orange juice or cranberry juice

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Beat together honey, butter and salt on low speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Add the flour, vanilla, and baking soda and mixing for a couple of minutes. Stir in nuts and fruit. Shape dough into a log about three inches in diameter, wrap in plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at

least eight hours. Cut dough into 1/2 inch slices and place on parchment paper on cookie sheet. Bake 20 minutes. While bites are cooling, mix together powdered sugar and juice together and drizzle over bites. If it is too thin, add more powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time. Makes about eightto-ten bites. Refrigerate dough up to a week, if you want to bake in batches.

» SKILLET CHOPS WITH ONIONS AND APPLES.

4 thick, bone-in pork chops 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 Granny Smith apples, cut into 1/2” wedges 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced 1/3 cup chicken broth 1 cup whipping cream 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons bourbon (What? No vodka?) 8 sprigs fresh thyme

Heat oven to 450 deg. Sprinkle chops with salt and pepper. Heat oil in iron skillet over medium heat, then add chops cooking on each side until good and browned. Remove chops from skillet, then add the apples and onions. Cook for about 4 or 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until apples are brown. Add broth and cook another couple of minutes. Make sure you scrape the bottom of the skillet to get those good bits loosened up. In a bowl, mix together cream and mustard; add to skillet and cook, stirring, until it bubbles. Remove skillet from heat and stir in bourbon. Add chops, turning to coat, then top with apples, onions and thyme. Place skillet in oven for 10 minutes. Remove and let stand for a couple of minutes before serving to let meat absorb sauce and juices. As always, thanks for your comments and questions. And please support our advertisers who help make this publication possible. e

emember The Magic Pan? This crêpe restaurant, which once had 110 locations nationwide (including one in the Galleria), was immensely popular in the 1970s and 1980s. But food fads change, chains change hands, and The Magic Pan fell victim to (they say) the low-fat craze and (I say) neglect. The last Magic Pan in McLean, Virginia was phased out of business about the same time George H. W. Bush was phased out of office. To prove that crêpes aren’t really a fad, Moroccan chef Youssef Nafaa opened Houston’s first Coco Crêpes, Waffles & Coffee in Midtown in 2007. I remember being impressed when I visited with a friend after a Bayou City Boys Club meeting (more fond memories). That location’s popularity has spawned three new ones, including in Rice Village, Vintage Park, and one on Washington. I found the Washington location by accident. Indulge me as I quickly tell the story. I loathe sitting in traffic. I needed to drop off my cat for an early vet appointment in the Heights. Returning home was hopeless. Studemont was backed up. I already knew the traffic lights would be out at Waugh and Allen Parkway. Shepherd wasn’t an option. Westcott was my last chance. But I needed breakfast first. And I was in no mood to cook. I remembered the bright, cheery space from when it was a Hollister Grill. The layout hasn’t changed much, but the counter area now boasts an ultradeluxe coffee and espresso setup. Chef Nafaa was there, interviewing a potential employee. Patrons darted in and out. Some lounged in comfy armchairs. People are happy here. So was I when my Caramel Crisp coffee drink arrived. Imagine—a real, breakable coffee mug filled to the

brim with sweet, caramel richness. Real flatware to stir, as well. I had a Goldilocks moment: not too hot, not too cold. Just right. The crowning glory was the intricate latte art on top. I guess it’s a coffee shop cliché, but only skilled baristas can inject steamed milk into espresso just so… and this one did it so the pattern remained intact after I drank the whole beverage! Equally as delicious was my Breakfast Crêpe with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, and an exotic Merguez beef sausage integrating the spices of Morocco into coin-sized medallions. The crêpe itself was a bit thicker than I expected, but that helps it stand up to the generous amount of filling. It’s not quite a pancake, but it was light and crispy on the outside, and I devoured the whole thing. Coco offers a wide selection of sweet and savory crêpes to enjoy at any time of day. The Mediterranean with oven roasted tomatoes, feta cheese, Kalamata olives, and harissa sauce is a spicy vegetarian option. And for your sweet tooth, I can recommend the S’mores Crêpe with marshmallows, graham cracker crumbs, and chocolate sauce. Of course, there’s always the irresistible Nutella Crêpe! Paninis, soups and salads, and house made gelato are also available. At any Coco location, you’re sure to find what you’re craving. e

In The GayBorhood

Moving 101 e

By John BuChanan

H

ello, my fabulous Gayborhood residents! Here’s some good news after a few months of slower market activity: Houston has rebounded and we actually show some sales growth for this month. The interest rates are still great, so if you’re sitting on the fence thinking about moving or buying or selling please contact me so I can make your decisions a little bit easier. Moving is a b*tch. Yup, I said it. There’s just no other way to describe it. You never hear anyone say, “I’m so excited to move all my stuff!” No ma’am, you never hear that. But, quite frankly, you can change the way you move to make it less painful. I will use myself as the guinea pig because I just moved five days ago and, yes, it was from hell! I think over the past 15 years I have probably moved six times, so you would think with me being a realtor and the past experiences I would be a professional at it. Hell to the no! I felt like a baby bird being pushed out of its nest. Of course, you would think I would fly, No ma’am, I hit the ground so damn hard I was unconscious! LOL! First, if you are about to put your house on the market, you should have already started packing. You have to be one step ahead of the game. I found myself running to the grocery stores (and yes, to Walmart) to collect empty cardboard boxes for the upcoming move. I was there at 12 midnight, 6 a.m. and at various other times. I thought I was so smart. Then I went to my local U-Haul store. Girl, they had 20 large boxes for $22 dollars. I thought they would be more expensive so I should have started there first. Now I know, and so do you! Pack one or two boxes per day so you are not totally overwhelmed and worn out. I have learned to pace myself on this issue. Pace yourself. Don’t try to pack everything in a day, weekend or even a week. Give yourself plenty of time. If you try to do everything over a weekend, you will regret your decision. One thing I did do right was move to my closet clothes

right on the hangers—from closet to out of the closet to the car then, yup, back in the closet. It was the first time my clothes were ready before I even moved in the house. Something most folks forget is to plan your transfers early, such as your utilities and all your mail and bills. I did this early this time and I haven’t noticed a gap in my in my mail being delivered. Make sure you have a record of what your bills are because every once in a while one of them will not get to the location and you will end up with a late fee, so make sure you do this in advance. I decided this time to move all the smaller stuff on my own and hire a moving company to move the larger items (since I’m such a delicate flower). Not, but you know what I mean. I decided to use the same moving company I used last time. They did a fabulous job the last time, but this time was from hell. I promised I wouldn’t bash them to bad so I won’t tell you there name, but I’ll give you a hint: They are a fruit and it’s not an orange! The last time it took them a total of five hours with three guys to move me. This time, with same stuff but a different crew and day, it took them 11 hours. Seriously! Thank God, I had already discussed my charge and since it was the same stuff, they agreed to charge me the same amount. If not I would have been kicking someone off their street corner to pay for the 11 hours. I was a little disappointed, for sure. Try to move things into their correct place from the beginning—it will save you time. Yes Girl, I started hanging pictures and placing rugs before I moved anything in. It made me feel a little ahead of the game. Meet your new neighbors, for several reasons. It will break the ice and you will have familiar eyes watching your house during the move. Hello! This is important and a wise move. I hope some of these moving tips will come in handy for your next move. Until next edition—so long…farewell… goodbye! e

Spring Has Sprung e  By

forest riggs

inally, it has arrived: Spring! After a few months of cold and wet weather, Gay Galveston is once again sprouting new buds and busting forth bigger and better than ever. Spring or springtime refers to the season and the ideas of rebirth, renewal, rejuvenation, resurrection and regrowth (that is a mouthful of R’s!), as well as a general celebration of life. Now that the doldrums have passed, the island is coming to life again. It is Spring in Galveston, and lily-white mainlanders are ready for some of that rejuvenation and resurrection. Folks are returning to the beaches, restaurants have waiting lines, hotels and motels are slowly filling and Walmart is chock full of screaming kids grabbing skim boards, brightly colored sand pails and T-shirts with every imaginable attribute of Galveston printed on them. The adults are racing to the beer and wine aisles to load into their new Styrofoam coolers with all the adult beverages they can carry and still walk. In the parking lot, visitor autos are stuffed with beach chairs, umbrellas, barbecue pits and everything to make for a pleasant escape from daily mainland life. The familiar sound of bags of ice being slammed against the pavement to loosen the frozen cubes can be heard as you move up and down the parking lanes. Locals know spring has sprung by observing the bold grackles (large black birds with big, fan-like tails) as they begin their sexy dance moves to lure a mate. Darting and ducking around bushes, trees and sidewalks, the ebony-clad warriors are puffingup, strutting, wing quivering and making the loud catcalls for which they are known. For years, their “call” has reminded me of a paper bag filled with air, sealed and then crushed; a pretty obnoxious noise only to be followed by a shrill whistle or shriek. When you

stop to think about it, the grackles are much like humans in their behavior. Speaking of noise and celebration, a huge “Happy Anniversary!” goes out to favorite island club, 23rd St. Station. Locals know it as “the Station” and love it! Todd, Dan and their talented staff have taken the shell of a former club and, like the mythical Phoenix, it has risen from the ashes, becoming a hugely successful bar for the Galveston GLBT community. Eddie Aucoin worked his artistic magic and created

“A little Madness in the Spring Is wholesome even for the King, But God be with the clown, Who ponders this tremendous scene— This whole experiment of green, As if it where his own! —Emily Dickenson

new fixtures, lighting, an extended stage and a re-vamped garden/patio, as well as other physical improvements. After a year of steady business and special events, Todd Farrish says there is more to come. In addition to highquality drag shows, the club also offers fantastic buffets, special event fixin’s for sporting events, birthday parties, weddings and just about any event worth celebrating. If you have never had the opportunity to sample the great dishes prepared by Island Diva Misty Valdez, drop by the Station on

a weekend show night or holiday and be prepared to pig out! The beer is cold, the drinks are strong and the staff friendly and engaging—always. 23rd St. Station celebrated its one-year anniversary on March 12 with a huge, all-day party. Prepared foods and cold drinks filled the club. Throughout the day, islanders and visitors stopped by the club to extend their congratulations and best wishes to Todd, Dan and the staff. At 9:30 p.m. the buffet took over the tabletops and the feast began. Shortly thereafter, the show of shows began with Misty Valdez, C.C. Ryder, Carly Hart, Symphony McKnight Capri and Island Idol Iris Fuentes entertaining the jubilant crowd until the wee hours. It’s safe to say, “a good time was had by all.” Always a great time at the Station and we wish them many years of success and patronage by the locals and visitors. Lastly, but certainly not least, the real unsung heroes in the gay community are the bartenders, and the Station has some mighty good ones, always there to serve your favorite beverage, re-fill your empty glass, offer snack food or even listen to your woes if need be. David, Chris, Michael and Rob have been at it for a long time and they know how to please bar patrons and keep everyone happy. Kudos to Todd and Dan for hiring and keeping the A-Team! So Spring is here, things are happening and the sap is flowing. Every year about this time, Gay Galveston emerges from the post-holiday “slow-downs” and starts anew. The Island is a way of life and one that everyone should sample! As the old saying goes: “Be there or be square”. e A resident of Galveston where he can be found wasting bait and searching for the meaning of life, Forest Riggs recently completed a collection of short stories about his beloved island and is working on a novel.

Season 8: Ain’t It Great! Season 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race has begun, and it’s off to a fast and furious start. At press time, the first 2 episodes have already aired. We learn during episode 2 that Acid Betty has a very sharp “acidic” tongue. Friend and fellow Brooklyn, New Yorker, Thorgy Thor, has not-so-nice things to say about Acid Betty, as they are on the same team in a dance challenge where teamwork is critical. After all is said and done, the dance is polished and receives praises from the judges. At age 38, Acid Betty is the oldest of the group of 12. As a seasoned queen, will this work in her favor? Will she learn to control that acidic tongue, or will that tongue (in cheek) lead her straight to the top of the group?

In each of the first two episodes, Acid Betty has placed in what we call the “High” category. (I promise, no pun intended!) Of course, you do not want to be eliminated. The next level up from eliminated is “Low”. One step higher is “Safe”. RuPaul always warns the queens about being in the “Safe” category. You want to be anything but safe! After “Safe” and before the highest category, the winner of the challenge, is called being “High”. Hope this helps! Starting out with only 12 contestants (the previous three seasons each had 14 contestants), three queens were eliminated in the first two episodes, combined. Therefore, only nine queens remain. However, at the end of episode 2, RuPaul makes a phone call on Michelle Visage’s cell phone. We are not told who is on the other end of the phone call, but all that we know is that RuPaul invites whoever it is to come on the show. Is it an eliminated contestant? Is it Shangela popping out of a box? Stay tuned! e
