Born in 1958, Rene Van der Velden has always been obsessed with boats and it was inevitable that he would end up studying naval architecture at university. During this period and throughout his early career René was privileged to work alongside such leading lights of the superyacht world

quality, the designs benefit from a careful analysis of systems and equipment. The boats will, for example, feature only one anchor instead of two in a pocket as is usually the case with Moonen yachts, which in turn means just one anchor winch. While offering a more aggressive styling, Nick’s designs retain the essence of Moonen quality in terms of fuel savings, low noise and vibration levels, and the exceptional comfort of a round bilged hull. It is an excellent choice for people who like to steer the boat themselves, for instance, and perhaps travel with young children. The yachts will be fitted with Volvo IPS propulsion, so the engine room is placed far aft. They will fit seamlessly within the Moonen fast displacement philosophy (see page 16) and be capable of reaching 22 knots. The IPS configuration leaves lots of space free in the forward section for four cabins. This is in line with the idea that there is unlikely to be a full-time crew onboard. An open-plan layout in the saloon/wheelhouse area also reflects the social aspect of the owners and their friends/family at the helm.

Also onboard to explain his recently unveiled modern design concepts for Moonen (see page 10) was Nick Mezas, and the press were again excited by the prospects. “I really like the new designs and I think the way that Moonen is going forward with a fresh vision on exterior design is a great way to go, especially in the current situation,” said Ibrahim Farhat from the international Arabic language publication, World of Yachts & Boats.

Typically Dutch At 17.30, My Way docked in Willemstad and the tour party disembarked for a small tour through the old town area with a guide. The journalists expressed their pleasure at this turn of events as, despite being in Holland for a week, the busyness of their schedule visiting members of the Holland Yachting Group actually means they rarely get time to experience something so typically Dutch. A delicious dinner was served at a restaurant in Willemstad and the chance to look back at the goggles pictures was a fine conclusion to a pleasant and productive day.

What’s in a name? Quite a lot it seems when it comes to distinguishing between certain types of motoryacht. Can you tell your displacement from your semi-displacement? What’s the difference between planing and semi-planing? And when should we call a yacht fast displacement instead of high speed? Moonen director Emile Bilterijst, a naval architect by trade, sheds some light on this important distinction.

The owner of the new Moonen 82 Alu had previously owned a GRP motoryacht and his experiences had convinced him that speed was nothing without comfort. He approached Moonen to commission a fast displacement yacht at the same time as we were developing a new range of aluminium vessels called the Alu-series, the first of which was the Moonen 94 Alu Nilo. “We were greatly impressed with the flexibility of the yard and its designers,” remembers the owner. “My Way is a fine classic example of customisation. The original platform for the Moonen 82 Alu specified a top speed of 21 knots but I requested 25 knots and the design was altered accordingly. At the same time she has all the comfort of a displacement yacht – going fast is no fun if it is uncomfortable – and an incredible range of 2000 miles on a single fuel tank of 10,000 litres. This is quite exceptional for a boat of this volume.” The owner and his wife also thoroughly enjoying the building process. “Each time we came to Holland it felt like a mini-holiday. The yard personnel were very friendly and it has been like being part of one big family who are all equally committed to building a great boat. Sometimes we had a question after returning home from one of our visits to Moonen and these were always answered very efficiently. With excellent communication like this, the distance

“When we founded Holland Yachts our initial market mainly revolved around selling yachts up to around 15 metres in length,” remembers Leo. “But the Russians have really caught the yachting bug and even the economic crisis has not stopped them enjoying the sailing lifestyle in increasingly larger yachts. We also opened an office in the elegant new port of Tivat in Montenegro, which has rapidly become a key meeting point of superyachts owned by Russians.”

Nothing but the best As the demands of its customers have continued to increase, Holland Yachts started looking for a partnership with a reliable brand that was capable of building yachts over 23 metres in length. Not that size alone was the issue according to Leo. “Russian owners expect nothing but the best and even yachtbuilders in Holland are viewed through this lens. There have been an increasing number of Russians commissioning superyachts from Moonen and at the beginning of 2012 we were delighted to start exploring the potential of becoming the yard’s agent in this area of the world.” “After gaining some years of experience with mass production GRP yachts,

Our goal now is to ensure that the cooperation with Holland Yachts also provides a superior standard of service to all our clients.”

over the Rainbow The amount of bead-blasting involved was painstaking and meant that Inoferro had to literally take care of every screw and bolt. “Everything on Rainbow is custom-made and we worked very closely with the designers at Dijkstra & Partners to create equipment based upon their prototypes. I am very proud of the results, which showcase our ability to make stainless steel in the most tailor-made forms possible.”

Showcase to the world While readers of Moonen magazine will be primarily interested in motor yachts we guess, the growing fleet of new generation J-class super sailing yachts is a phenomenon that interests all sailors. “The entire Inoferro team was glued to their television sets this summer to watch Rainbow as she took part in the special J class events surrounding this summer’s Olympics in the UK,” adds Richard. “It was a great thought that a global audience of spectators were looking at our railings, air inlets, cleats, mushrooms and other stainless steel equipment that we supplied to the deck of this marvellous boat.”

The stainless steel experts from Moonen sister company Inoferro have supplied some very impressive deck equipment to the newest member of the J-class fleet. From her phenomenal rig to her awesome hydraulics, the 40-metre Rainbow benefits from the very latest sailing yacht technologies, all set within a lines plan first drawn up in 1934. The desire to ensure historical authenticity is just one of the reasons why the yacht owners and the shipyard responsible for the project asked Inoferro to come up with some innovative

Respecting pedigree “We had previously worked with Holland Jachtbouw on the world’s largest two-masted schooner Athos, which made her racing debut last year,” explains Inoferro manager Richard Mecklenfeld. “Because Rainbow’s owners wished to respect the pedigree of a yacht designed in the 1930s, all the deck equipment had to have an anodised grey theme. They initially asked us to take care of the stanchion poles but the results of our special glass bead-blasting techniques were very impressive. We were able to create a lovely light-grey colour that will not erode. Holland Jachtbouw then commissioned us to make all the equipment except the large custom winches from Lewmar.”

As well as being famed for its superyachts and all-round expertise related to water, the Netherlands has also achieved a reputation for innovative sports cars. Born to sail My passion for sailing must have started in the womb when my parents were enjoying their American speedboat in the early 60s. I was given my first boat – a 2.80 m tender with a 4 hp outboard engine – at the age of eight and went on to own many different vessels. I currently have a classic handmade Turkish fishing vessel and an American offshore speedboat. The latter keeps my teenage boys happy, while the fishing boat is much more my wife’s cup of tea. I love them both of course!

done a great job and, throughout our subsequent tour, countless people would tell us how they thought SJS was a brand-new yacht. They simply refused to believe that she was built 11 years ago, and I too found her incredibly seaworthy, even in the challenging currents of the Irish Sea.

Excellent understanding Having spent my career in the merchant navy, royal navy and aircraft navigation, I set up Nauticon in 2006. We offer yacht management, delivery & collection services and crew recruitment, as well as organising cruises for owners. The trip onboard SJS was with the owner and one guest. Normally I would take my own crew with me – at least a deck hand – but on this occasion there was just the three of us to run a superyacht. Fortunately, I had an excellent understanding with the owner and I could lie with a relaxed head on my pillow when it was my turn to sleep! He and his friend did a very good job and I was very impressed at the clear understanding the owner has of how his yacht handles. Of course, when sailing with an owner you also have a hospitality role to fulfil. I would take two hours to clean the boat on the outside and my complements are also due to the Moonen welders and painters who created such a smooth surface that made these duties much easier too.

Canal via Fort William. Sailing into the loch with the tidal runs, eddies and currents, it felt like you were in a washing machine. SJS crept forward like a crab and was on brilliant form: All three of us stood on the bridge at six am marvelling at this phenomenon. And that’s when the hard graft really started as the Caledonian Canal itself is a different cookie with its 29 locks, four aqueducts and ten bridges. Although I was well prepared and knew all the protocols, we had to really work as a team. Again, SJS handled superbly and we completed our tour of the Scottish Highlands in style.

Blown away Throughout our cruise we experienced no issues with the boat at all. I was blown away by her terrific fuel consumption: We ran at an average speed of 8.5 knots at about 1800 rpm, and we only took on fuel once, in Dublin. SJS averaged no more than 35 litres/hour and has twice the range I would expect from such a yacht. In my long career I’ve never experienced anything like this and SJS is truly a transatlantic boat! Her comfort levels were also super. Most systems are automated and, if you set a temperature in the saloon, that is the temperature you get. SJS is luxurious throughout and everything is available you could possibly need.
