AND SALUTES ZOE SALDAÑA ON RECEIVING
THE SPOTLIGHT AWARD
Twenty-seven years ago, the Costume Designers Guild, IATSE Local 892, launched the Costume Designers Guild Awards to honor not only our union members but also costume designers worldwide, knowing that it was essential to establish the value of the work and the workers. Costume design is more than an art—it is a language. Through fabric, texture, and color, our members craft stories that transcend time and place, giving audiences a visual anchor to characters and narratives that inspire, entertain, and move the world. At the Costume Designers Guild, our mission is to amplify this artistry while securing a future where every member thrives.
UNION F orward
This year tested us like never before. As the industry faced an unprecedented slowdown, and as devastating wildfires swept through our communities, the Guild stood unwavering in its commitment to its members. When challenges arose, we met them with action, ensuring access to emergency relief, essential resources, and unwavering support. Through partnerships with organizations like the Motion Picture and Television Fund and the Entertainment Union Relief Fund, the IATSE Walsh/ DiTolla/Spivak Foundation, and grassroots efforts by IATSE members donating to the homegrown Entertainment Union Relief Fund—and creating stores for displaced entertainment workers—the CDG continues to help members navigate the challenges while keeping the spirit of our community alive.
Amid these challenges, we secured monumental success in our negotiations with AMPTP, earning well-deserved recognition for our members’ invaluable contributions to the motion picture industry through improved wages and proper credits. United with our fellow unions and guilds, we showed the strength of collective action. Solidarity is not just a principle, but a force that drives meaningful change. Together we secured advancements that honor the dedication and skill of those who bring stories to life through costume design. Our members’ imaginations remained boundless even in a time of fewer opportunities. They brought to life extraordinary realms, breathed depth into bygone eras, and enriched modern narratives with authenticity and flair. Their unwavering dedication during the most challenging times underscores the profound impact of their artistry on storytelling and culture.
This year marked a continuation of groundbreaking progress for our Guild. For the second time in our 27-year history, assistant costume designers will stand proudly alongside costume designers as honorees at our prestigious awards, reinforcing our commitment to recognizing every role in the creative process. Additionally, the artistry of costume illustrators will once again be celebrated with a dedicated award, honoring the visionaries who transform concepts and ideas into stunning visual realities. These acknowledgments are a testament to our belief that every contribution shapes the future of the art, inspiring us to continue championing inclusivity and excellence across our industry.
To the nominees, your artistry and dedication have brought us here. This moment is a tribute to all who elevate storytelling through their craft. Together we show the world the power of our creativity. The future is ours to shape. Let’s show the world the power of what we can create together.

MESSAGE FROM THE
President
sumptuous samurai glory. The supernatural, inventive romp Agatha All Along surprises at every turn, and there’s no question that Wicked is bathed in sparkle magic. Conclave’s deftly nuanced religiosity is counterpoint to The Book of Clarence’s imaginative “religious order.” Meanwhile, Borderlands and Furiosa give us exacting and vastly different views of brutal futures. These are just a few examples of nominated projects. Storytellers extraordinaire, our nominees are essential visionaries.
Challenge, perseverance, and hope spring to mind as I write. Our community has suffered overwhelming, unfathomable losses during this unprecedented fire season. Creating miracles, our members supported, shared, listened, donated, cried, and comforted each other. This is the definition of union: helping colleagues—however, wherever, and whenever. Streams of volunteers, newly created donation centers, distributed gift cards, organized racks of clothing, home goods, and essentials in mere days. Miracle workers. We are production. And at our creative best when time is fleeting. In the trenches with us during contract negotiations as well as this tragedy, IATSE leadership strategized, solved problems, and dissolved roadblocks. The empathy, determination, and resolve to always serve and protect our members is palpable.
When the fires erupted, we were past the critical planning point for this 27th awards gala, and that could not be renegotiated. We hope this evening offers the opportunity to escape, celebrate, and share with your community. Despite negotiations and strikes, an explosion of outstanding work was created. From the moody, darkly exquisite Nosferatu to the regally adorned Gladiator II, eras, genres,
Our honorees all share our passion for “the work.”
Extraordinary dedication to our guild is emeritus CDG President Salvador Pérez’s legacy. I’m proud to honor his selfless commitment with our Distinguished Service Award.
We invite the inimitable visionary John Waters to induct his prolific costume designer Van Smith posthumously into our CDG Edith Head Hall of Fame.
We are thrilled to celebrate Jenny Beavan with our Career Achievement Award. She and her beautiful work are legendary, one of a kind. We look forward to more magic from Jenny!
Cherishing our fearless Spotlight Award honoree Zoe Saldaña, her career of costume transformations make her the perfect candidate to spotlight our work.
Our Vanguard Spotlight shines on Janelle Monáe. From their iconic Halloween costume inspired by The Fifth Element character Diva Plavalaguna to their bold black-and-white stylings, we applaud their experimental spirit!
Pay parity and contract negotiations dominated 2024. Jimmy Kimmel and John Cena have our eternal thanks for their showstopping 2024 Oscar costume design gag. Brave, succinct, and minimal, their 2-minute, 57-second gag brought global awareness to our #nakedwithoutus pay equity campaign.
And as a naked John Cena demurred, “Costumes—they are so important. Maybe they’re the most important thing there is.”
We agree!

Monáe’s acclaimed trilogy of albums—The ArchAndroid (2010), The Electric Lady (2013), and Dirty Computer (2018)—all reached the top 20, featuring gold-certified singles such as “Tightrope,” “Yoga,” and “Make Me Feel.” Their fourth album, The Age of Pleasure (2023) celebrates the African diaspora with grooves from Jamaica, Nigeria, and Atlanta. Dirty Computer and The Age of Pleasure (2023) each earned Album of the Year Grammy nominations.
Growing up in Kansas City, Kansas, Monáe studied musical theater in New York before moving to Atlanta. They founded the Wondaland Arts Society and self-released The Audition (2003), catching the attention of Outkast’s Big Boi. After Monáe’s feature on Fun’s pop hit “We Are Young” received multiple Grammy nominations, they returned with The Electric Lady, which featured collaborations with Prince, Erykah Badu, and Miguel. In 2015, Monáe moved Wondaland to Atlantic Records and released the EP Wondaland Presents: The Eephus Monáe has balanced music with a successful acting career, starring in Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Antebellum, Glass Onion, and the series Homecoming Monáe’s sci-fi collection of stories The Memory Librarian became a New York Times bestseller in 2022. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Salvador P e rez
Salvador Pérez is an accomplished and versatile costume designer who has worked in genres ranging from feature film and television movies to television series, commercials, and red-carpet gowns. Born and raised in Central California, Pérez moved to Los Angeles to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. He planned on a career in fashion design, but his talents were soon discovered by costume designers. He made costumes, and then became a costume manufacturing foreman and assistant designer on such films as Titanic, Stargate, The Flintstones, and Barb Wire
With his vast knowledge of clothing construction and manufacturing, Pérez was sought out by the J. Peterman catalog to design and develop their Movie Legends line. When working on The Mindy Project, he produced a fashion jewelry line with BaubleBar and a signature coat line with Gilt.com.
As a costume designer, Pérez has applied his experience to creating characters on projects as diverse as the hit TV series The Mindy Project—where he earned an Emmy nomination for costume design—Castle, Veronica Mars, the Hulu series Four Weddings and a Funeral, Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, and feature films Pitch Perfect 1–3, Think Like a Man 1–2, Men of Honor, Drumline, and Hocus Pocus 2, for which Salvador received a CDG Award nomination and his second Emmy nomination.
Pérez considers every aspect of a character’s personality while telling the story through costume. Knowing how clothes should fit and be made, he has a unique ability to make actors look their best. He brings his love for his art with him to every fitting, every shopping trip, and every day on set. Pérez’s passion for costume design and the film and television Industry has been recognized by the Costume Designers Guild, whose members elected him president for three terms.
EDITH HEAD HALL OF FAME Van Smith
Van Smith (1945–2006) created a legacy with his distinctive costume design, primarily collaborating on the iconic films of John Waters and considered one of the Dreamlanders, Waters’s ensemble of regular cast and crew members. He first worked with Waters on Pink Flamingos (1972), and created the famous look for the film’s star, Divine. From the extreme looks of the flamboyant criminals and hairdressers in Female Trouble (1974) to the grotesque citizens of Mortville in Desperate Living (1977), Smith contributed his extraordinary talent to 10 of

Waters’s works, showcasing his versatility as he delivered more conventional looks in the later, more mainstream films.
“Van Smith’s costumes are one of the main reasons my films’ popularity with the twisted public has lasted over the decades. I called him my ‘ugly expert,’ but his celluloid creations ushered in a new kind of radical beauty. You can’t think of Divine without giving Van the ultimate credit—he created this fashion monster’s look that still is alarming audiences all over the world,” said John Waters of this year’s inductee, Van Smith.

IATSE International President Matthew Loeb and 3rd International Vice President Michael Miller’s leadership and advice were crucial to our success. Their support of our campaign was extraordinary, and we are indebted to their steadfast resolve. Thank you both.
CDG Executive Director Brigitta Romanov steered every aspect of our campaign and presented our case with unwavering commitment and dedication. Her leadership and knowledge led us to our most successful contract in decades. We are forever grateful. We also acknowledge the efforts of Dr. Deborah Nadoolman Landis, who initiated the Pay Equity campaign during her CDG Presidency and has fought tirelessly for change.

Tonight’s honorees were selected by the members of the Costume Designers Guild, IATSE Local 892, as a tribute to their efforts and achievements in the entertainment industry. A slate of distinguished costume designers were nominated and voted upon by the Awards Steering Committee, resulting in the Career Achievement Award Honoree and the Distinguished Service Award Honoree.
A three-stage ballot process decided the nominees for the competitive awards.
For all categories, costume designers were asked to submit eligible projects released between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. Competitive awards are open to all designers given the credit of costume designer, regardless of union affiliation.
Costume Designers Guild members nominated five candidates for excellence in the following categories: Contemporary Film; Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film; Period Film; Contemporary Television; Sci-fi/Fantasy Television; Period Television; Variety, RealityCompetition, Live Television; Short Form Design; and Costume Illustration. In the event of a tie, a sixth nominee is added to the category.
The entries receiving the most votes in all categories, Film, Television, Short Form, and Illustration became the nominees for the final ballot.
The costume designers receiving the majority of votes in each category will become the award recipients tonight.
Nomination and final ballots were tallied online by awardsforce.com.
IN 2004, I DIDN’T THINK ABOUT IT. TV can be full of ups and downs. But I’ve been fortunate to work with gracious people who want to help others. Paying it forward is important to me. You want to give back to those that may be hitting hard times. Life in this business can knock you on your butt, and MPTF is like that hand that comes out of nowhere: “Come on, get back on the horse. We got you.”
