Capstone Midterm and final concept for my capstone 2022

Many people love talking and learning about the past, whether it is movies, books or podcasts, people are interested in the past. Which made me think why do we seem to have such a problem talking about the future like how we talk about the past? Thus, researching about the stigma of dying and why as Americans we do not want or like to talk about dying and death. After learning about America’s Death Denying culture and different organizations that ARE talking about death, lead to creating a space that people can go and feel comfortable talking about death.

Spring Grove Cemetery

Norman Chapel

I wanted to place my idea in Spring Grove Cemetery because I think it is the perfect composition of the beauty of life with the beauty of dying. Spring Grove and arboretum is the third largest cemetery in the United States, it sits on 733 acres and 450 acres is landscaped in the middle of Cincinnati, OH. I fell in love with this place because of the nature, it is a cemetery first and that mausoleums and headstones are at the foreground but encompassing it all is life and the beauty of the trees and flowers. They have tours or holiday themed events, and the grounds are open to the public daily.

Site

My concept is to break down my space into past, present, and future. Breaking those down into how each space should feel I landed on my design strategy, looking at a Victorian Era dinner party and how people would move into different rooms that hosted different conversations of the evening.

Parlor

Programming sequence + design strategy, Looking at a Victorian Era dinner party and how people would move into rooms that hosted different conversations of the evening. The parlor is reminiscent, and is where the conversation is about the past. The library is engaging, being in the moment and present, conversation should be of the now. The solarium is hopeful for what is to come for the future

Programming sequence

The value of talking about passing away is to minimize family tension while maximum wish of loved ones.

How do you create a space that people will feel comfortable enough to have an open conversation about death?

Parlor First space you walk into. This is where the conversation is dedicated to past. Reflecting and remembering. Is the museum space during the day, full of photos, artifacts and objects. Where the cemetery tour can start. Dark tones that remind you of the past. Antique vibe. Standing space + small sitting around before entering into the next space.

Library Second space, the main event space of the evening. This is where the conversation about death is happening. Remembering to stay in the moment, this has hospitality feel to help people be comfortable. The vibe is light but serious. People should feel however they would like, but this isn’t to make you sad it is to be enlighten and help you be open to letting in a spark something inside while enjoying a meal. Warm, airy, and lively. Light to medium tones and vibe but with plants to show life. Dining seating.

Solarium Final space, this is where people move into to decompress the conversations of the evening. Either for post dinner drinks or even dessert. A little more serious this is where people communicate with each other on what they want for their future and understand.

During the day this is where by appointment people can meet with Spring Grove to plan on paper what they would like. Very bright and light. Couches for more of an intimate and relax conversation.

King Records Fall Design Studio 2021 This was a group project that we were to ask to create a museum of King Record. King Records was is apart of Cincinnati, Ohio forgotten history. King Records recorded with artist such as Bootsy Collins and James Brown from the years of 1943 to 1970. Artist could record and get their vinyl pressed all in one place. King Records was said to be the first place to really pave the way for rock and roll music. As a group, we wanted to create a space that paid homage to the space as well as Cincinnati. King Records at the time was one of the first companies to hire not based on race or color of someone’s skin or gender. We wanted to also create a space that covered the racial inequality that is still happening in America today. Made with Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop and rendered in Lumion.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Spring Design Studio 2020 Renovated two main concourse in the Cincinnati Children’s main campus Hospital. In this project the intent was to design spaces for families to feel comfortable and calm. In hard times people feel as if their life is a disrupted pool of water, however if their child feels calm and at home it is almost like the clarity a parent needs in the uneasy water. Different texture and linear moments are placed for the child interact with. Bringing in the cool and calm elements with a mixture of play for families and their children is important for their experience. We were given to concourses to renovate. See floor plans and renders. Model made in SketchUp rendered with Enscape.

Work Place Summer Design Studio 2019 This space is a share work space for the Cincinnati women that work in the performing arts such as; poetry, acting and dancing as well as fine arts. We were given a site on the west side of Cincinnati. The structure is the only thing we were instructed to keep. This space is made for women to help women. The employed woman has gallery space as well as performing space. During the day women can come to practice and learn from other women. In the evening it is open to the public for shows or opened for women’s workshops. On the first floor after passing through the entrance main space is used for gallery or stage space for poetry or acting. This room is lined with individually pods used for practicing reciting one’s work. Traveling to the second floor this space is used for either dancing or theater performance. The audience or instructor can observe from the third floor. Model made in Rhino rendered with Photoshop.
