Summer Programs at Moorestown Friends School Exceptional Teachers and Outstanding Facilities Moorestown Friends School offers a variety of summer learning opportunities for students in prekindergarten through high school. Summer Programs Master Teachers are MFS faculty and department heads with multiple years of teaching experience. They hold undergraduate and advanced degrees from major American colleges and universities such as Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Brown, New York University, Notre Dame, Haverford, and Wesleyan. Summer Programs are held on the school’s beautiful 48-acre campus in Moorestown, NJ. Students enjoy the use of many of the school’s facilities, including: • Hartman Hall, a newly renovated classroom building that opened in 2012 • Greenleaf Mansion and outdoor play area • Field House Gym, home to MFS varsity athletics during the school year • Computer, Music, Technology, and Science Laboratories • The White Building and Playground, home to Beginnings at MFS: The Moorestown Friends School Early Childhood Program • Woods and Wetland Areas All indoor spaces are air–conditioned.

Summer Scholars MFS Summer Scholars learn and collaborate with peers and master teachers to produce exciting, hands-on, student-centered projects. They have the opportunity to further personal interests by participating in activities related to academics, arts, sports, music, science, and fun!

Mini Scholars Ages: Four- and five-year-olds (must be four by September 30, 2014) Dates: July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25 Times: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. $180 per week 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. $240 per week Young children are wired to explore and to learn through play and motion. Moorestown Friends School Mini Scholars get to do just that. We invite your four- or five-year-old child to join us this summer for a unique experience of learning, interacting with others, cooperating, communicating, and growing in resilience and resourcefulness. The programs offers small class sizes with a typical 1:6 teacher/student ratio. Junior Scholars experience the best of both learning and summer fun. Mornings are spent learning and collaborating with peers and teachers on hands-on, studentcentered projects. Afternoon activities include swimming, arts, and athletics. Students in grades 4-6 may opt to take an afternoon mini-course.

Students Entering Grades 7-9 July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28-August 1, August 4-8 Courses meet Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.

Senior Scholars choose one area of study and engage in a fun, creative, and academically rich program. They learn through hands-on activities and projects supported by superior technological resources and instruction. Scholars receive reports at the end of the session which can be sent to the childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school if desired. Chemistry: Kitchen Science and Nutrition (3 weeks, July 7-25) $1450 Students will conduct experiments, participate in nutrition analyses, and prepare seasonal meals in a sustainable manner. They will learn principles of nutrition such as fat versus carbohydrates, vegetarianism, and supplement usage. Students who are interested in careers in biological and chemical sciences will enjoy this course. Singer-Songwriter Workshop (3 weeks, July 7-25) $1450 Each day will consist of vocal technique class and individual voice instruction to hone vocal skills, in addition to song study, lyric-writing sessions, rehearsals, and studio recording. Students will collaborate with scholars in the Video and Audio Production course, documenting their performances in a music video. Video and Audio Production Workshop (3 weeks, July 7-25) $1450 Students engage in the art of music video production from concept to postproduction, including inception, design, storyboarding, pre-production, audio recording, video recording, and editing. In collaboration with the Summer Scholars Singer-Songwriter Workshop, students will produce and direct real music videos. Journalism and Publishing: $1450 Making an Online Magazine (3 weeks, July 7-25) Students will produce a magazine on a topic of their choice, culminating in a published online product. Throughout the course, they will critically evaluate magazines and meet with professionals in the field, sharpening writing skills such as brevity, clarity, voice, and audience; photography skills such as composition, lighting, and editing; and graphic design skills such as typography, color, layout, and interactive digital features. Computer Programming and Digital Art (3 weeks, July 7-25) $1450 Scholars will learn the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop CS6, including filters, layers, masks, and other tools necessary to create graphic designs. Then they will be introduced to programming, first using the Code.org site and AppShed and then moving towards Python, Java, and JavaScript. Students will create final projects as well: webpages and apps created with their original digital artwork. 6

Mock Trial $970 (2 weeks, July 28 - August 8) Scholars will take a case from a series of assumed facts to a juryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision. Through research and collaborative work, students will learn about the legal system, the role of the prosecution and defense in trial cases, and how to properly prepare and present oral arguments. The class will culminate in a mock trial simulation with prosecution, defense, and witnesses. Filmmakers Workshop $970 (2 weeks, July 28 - August 8) Students will work as a team to develop a narrative video from beginning to end â&#x20AC;&#x201D; from original script development, cinematic design, storyboarding, and pre-production, to video recording, directing, acting, and all facets of post-production. The course will culminate with a premiere party of the group video and accompanying trailers. Science, Robotics, and Engineering Competitions $970 (2 weeks, July 28 - August 8) Students will compete in hands-on events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Each day the events will vary, but all will fall under the main categories of Science Concepts and Knowledge, Processes and Thinking Skills, and Application and Technology. Exploring Three-Dimensional Art â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Space (1 week, July 28 - August 1) $485 Students will create three-dimensional art projects that explore concepts of space, from the tiny innermost concepts of space to the vast distances of outer space. Participants will investigate different ideas and then develop both individual pieces and large scale group installations. They will receive a collection of photographs of their work, in addition to the original projects, that can be added to their portfolios. Musical Theater Audition Preparation Workshop $485 (1 week, August 4-8) Student actors and singers will work intensively to develop audition skills and confidence. Each day will include intensive vocal instruction, repertoire coaching, dramatic exercises, and character development. In this master-class setting, students will develop songs and monologues that can be used in future audition situations. The course will culminate in a performance for friends, family, and other Scholars. 7

Help your child prevent summer learning loss in a relaxed, yet focused environment. Students in Academic Transitions mini courses will refresh and review necessary skills to help them make a smooth transition to the new school year. Classes take place in the newly renovated and air-conditioned Hartman Hall. All sessions are taught by Moorestown Friends School teachers and department heads. Enrollment is limited. General Information Registration All registration should be completed online at summer.mfriends.org. Sibling Discount for Summer Scholars We welcome families to join our programs and provide a 5% discount for families enrolling two or more children. This discount does not apply to Courses for Credit or Academic Transitions courses. After You Register After you register, please consider your child to be enrolled unless you receive a call from the Program Director. Official confirmation will be sent via email in June, following receipt of final payment. Deposit and Payment A deposit per course must accompany the registration form. The deposit amount is deducted from the total tuition due. Full payment is due on or before June 1, 2014. Extended Day Program Our extended day program is available in the morning from 7:45 a.m. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 8:55 a.m. and in the afternoon from 3:30 p.m. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 4:30 p.m. Extended Day takes place in the Action Room where students can engage in individual or collaborative play. The charge is $5 per hour, which must be paid in cash or check upon drop-off or pickup. Parents may also pay in advance each week for the extended day program. Withdrawals, Cancellation, and Refund Policy Full refunds are granted if a program is full or cancelled and a change in course selection cannot be accommodated. Refunds, minus the non-refundable deposit, will be granted for withdrawals submitted before May 1, 2014. Parents must inform the Summer Programs Office in writing if they are withdrawing their child from any program. There are no refunds for absences; there is no provision for make-up classes. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable. Inclement Weather Programs will not be cancelled due to inclement weather. In case of rain, there is a rainy day plan in place. If a heat advisory is issued, students will be encouraged to drink plenty of water and their time outside will be limited. In addition, the Summer Programs facilities are air-conditioned.
