Cotehele Quay Gig Club

Cotehele Quay Gig Club had an amazing race day at Caradon Mixed Championships at the end of June, with three crews competing in the open, vets and supervets races. The vets started their campaign in excellent form, securing themselves a place in the semifinals, where they negotiated their way around some dramatic turns to finish in second place, and secure a place in the final. Onto the final and a fantastic display brought the vets crew home with a third-place finish and a bit of medal bling. The super vets and open crews didn’t have a good start and ended up going through to the repecharge instead, where the super vets gave a solid performance but not enough to move on in the competition. However the open crew went into their repecharge with a point to prove and came away with a first place, securing a place in the quarter final. With just enough time to sniff a piece of flapjack it was back out for the quarter final, a tough race with the eventual winners Caradon and other reputable clubs - the Cotehele open crew was very pleased to finish fourth. Sheila Snellgrove, chair of the club, said: “It was another great day for us with 22 people competing across ages from 22 to 68. We strive to be an inclusive club, open to all and this event demonstrated just that. The results build on our outstanding performance at the World Cornish Gig Championships in the Scillies this year with Ladies’ A having a best ever result of 14th in the world, and our Men’s A coming 21st, another really strong result. We are investing in new equipment and rigorous coaching and training programmes to show just what river rowing clubs can do.”
