High-rise Area Strategy
Research Studio with Neil Denari, 03-06/2012 Professor: Neil Denari
From the urban scheme we previously discussed before, I took Lot 36 to develop a specific strategy The Circulation Around Hybridized linked System for continuous and diverse urban space. The reason why I chose Lot 36 is because it is the main high-rise part of the westwood village. Because of the vertical and identity and complexity of program of Lot 36, the design strategy should be different from low-rise world.

Laboratory University Study
The whole program is connected both underground and in the air to generate a mini city with filmic urban public space. As people move around, over and through multifaceted spatial layers of the project, the continuous and diverse spatial experience makes the Lot 36 a “hyper connective city. The project promotes interactive relations and encourages encounters in the public spaces that vary from commercial, residential, and educational to recreational. The entire complex is a three-dimensional urban space in which buildings on the ground, under the ground and over the ground are fused together.

For Lot 36 which is a multiple-function and high density area, I want to unify the two formal types (blocks and irregular folding system) into hybridized linked system. Simple block towers with triangular volumes subtracted from the corners produces a “Z facade in either singular or repeated profiles. The block towers provide the main space for the program while the triangle corners create a series vertical sharing and communicating space along the towers. The No.1 building will hold four main functions for Lot 36 and provides a landmark for the site. Each floor will be provide vertical circulation by one of the elevators and escalators. The spiral arrangement of every floor gives the maximum sharing space and three-dimensions connective with each other.

Westwood Village Urban Design Proposal
Organic City
Research Studio with Neil Denari, 08/2011-03/2012 Professor: Neil Denari Partners: Suiwei Yang, Ehsan Lima
When we talking about cities, there are blocks which contains all the buildings and the public spaces which offers space for people to move and gather. In the automobile world, all the streets are line up and the blocks are in similar scale and there are clear boundaries between street and square. However it the walking world, all these restrictions are no longer exist.
each box stands by itself to generate a block. The public spaces around blocks automatically have variety scales and sections. This make the public space ambiguous whether it is a street or plaza. Without the cars in the site, the streets also are plazas.

KIT OF PARTS BLOCKS WITH CLOUDS When people move in between the blocks, the movements generate a space associated with human bodies, which flow in the world of loose blocks. So there is a contrast between the uncontrollable human bodies movements and controllable, fixed blocks. Thus we introduced a high contrast system of the folded “clouds”, which imitate the free movement of people to connect loose packed blocks.
Now the urban space made of blocks and clouds are convert from fixity to the liquidity. By introducing this contrast system, the boundary of interior and exterior, private and public, inside and outside becomes blurry. The scheme still have the idea of grid and blocks which also operate as right angle. Because of the multiple scales of the blocks, so the movements between them generate a loose pack pattern and variety experience of the streets.

Urban Renew Design Graduation Project in Huaqiao University, 06/2011 Professor: Yuan Long Partners: Tingwei Xu As the most density city of the world, Macau’s city developing history is kind of a self-organization development without little up-bottom planning. This kind of urban characteristic on one hand make Macau a amazing city with such a city energy. On the other hand, without any design some areas which has much more urban vitalization potential are in a chaos level currently. Our site, Sidakou, contains multiple urban elements such as a small plaza, some historical architectures and the facing to the city bay. However, without any necessary organization, such a potential area now is quite chaotic and disorder for living. Using a ‘acupuncture therapy’, we do some surgery in this area to organize the positive elements such as plaza, city bay and small parks into a continuous experience. Thus, this area is refreshed into a active zone to attract people coming in.

We hope to connect and activate these isolated small gardens all around the neighborhood. And make them into a attractive walking network.

Most of the building on site were built for more than 100 years and have very bad living conditions and have been vacant a lot. They formed a circle and its own inside yard. So we want to open them to the community.
3 3 4 5 4

Existing Situation
The streets near the site are too narrow and crowd for cars and motorcycle to drive and park. So we reorganize the motor lanes and leave some of the street to be footpath.
The Sidakou Square is divided by the long fountain into a linear area. So we demolish the fountain and change the square into a multi-used space which offer people to gather.
The abandoned harbor block not only the sea view from the Sikadou Square, also the circulation of people. So open the harbor and connect it with Sidakou Square is essential.

It seldom happens that the conditions for crystal growth are such to permit the development of ideal symmetry. The crystals may have grown more rapidly in one direction than in another; other surrounding minerals may have interfered, and in various ways its symmetrical growth been prevented. Such a crystal is said to show distortion. Ordinarily the amount of distortion is not so great as to prevent one from readily imagining what the ideally developed crsytal would be like and so determining its symmetry and character. At times we find a mineral occuring in crystals which prove to be not the characteristic forms for that mineral, but are rather the typical forms of some other species. In rare cases, unexplainable externalities are the cause of distoration. This phenomenon commonly operates within the the pseu do reality known as space oddities (Figs. 215 and 216).

regions (Fig. 217). The resulting mineral formation displalys multiple dominant grains, separated by faces of attenuated curvature bounded by the lines of ambijunction (Fig. 218). This behavior, well understood at the level of quantum particles, lacks theoretical consensus when observed at the level of the mineral. Since weak forces should no longer exert meaningful influence at this scale, Ronsonite is often studied posited as the key to forming a unified theory. Structure. Research Studio UCLA, 08/2011 Professor: Jason Payne Partners: Jenny Donnelly In the beginning we took an interest in a sequence that farmers use when planting and harvesting their crops. A continuous sequence that is broken down into 3 phases to fully cultivate one area of land. Those coupled sequences created an unusual edge condition in which we decided to generate our design. Our design uses the efficiency of the tractors pathway to create a large scale backdrop to enforce our primary intrigue in the smaller, human scale, features of our site.
At the master plan scale the greenhouses lose a sense of personal engagement, because the only way to view this plan would to be from an airplane, and at that scale the correlation between pathway and greenhouse would also be lost, and that was not the relationship we were interested in.
