In Memoriam

JOHN A. MORAN John Moran often shared a simple mantra: You won’t be remembered for how much money you made; you will be remembered for what you did with it. Upon his passing on September 23, 2023, at the age of 91, Mr. Moran was recognized not only as a business leader whose success exemplified the American Dream, but also as a man who had heeded his own words. John provided the literal foundation for an eye center that has restored the sight of countless people across the world, in the United States, and here in Utah. At the same time, his generosity created a launching pad for groundbreaking research at Moran that could lead to treatments for major eye ailments like age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. Mr. Moran dedicated much of the wealth he earned during his finance career to worthy non-profit organizations across the country. At the University of Utah, his beloved alma mater, he left a beacon of hope bearing his name. He wanted the center to provide compassionate care and make breakthroughs in research that would improve the treatment of blinding eye diseases.

In remarks at a news conference opening the Moran Eye Center building, he said, “It is my hope that the research and the work that’s being done here will prevent diseases of the eye that cause blindness, and God willing, restore sight to people who have lost their vision.” Today, the Moran Eye Center ranks among the 10 best in the nation for patient care, education, and research and is known for its outreach to increase access to eye care in Utah and around the world. “He was a true friend with a desire to help others, and his dedication to our vision to provide hope, understanding, and treatment deeply motivated me and everyone at Moran to strive for excellence,” said his good friend Randall J Olson, MD, CEO of the John A. Moran Eye Center. While Mr. Moran had no vision issue himself or in his family, he was deeply moved by his mother’s teachings and Dr. Olson’s dedication to the mission of restoring sight. “When Dr. Olson told me about his dream to carry out research that might someday restore vision to the blind, it brought to my mind stories from the Bible that my mother had read to me as a child. One of the reasons the Moran Eye Center exists is because my mother planted within me a belief in miracles.” Thank you for being a man of your word John, the world is better for having you been a part of it.

John A. Moran at the opening of the first John A. Moran Eye Center building.

“T

hat irresistible sense of hope that

exists in each of us can be felt in this new building, in the hearts of those who will be caring for patients, and in those who are working to advance the science of human sight.” —John A. Moran

LIVE AUCTION Rosé and Brunch

Utah Cutthroat Slam

Throw a fabulous rosé-themed Saturday or Sunday brunch for 40 of your lucky friends without lifting a finger! You could call it the ultimate pre-game “tailgate party” without the tailgate since it takes place on the inviting urban patio of Current Fish and Oyster. Or, make it an occasion to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary. Your hosts, chef Mikel Trapp and Zach Wojdula of Current Fish and Oyster, will walk you and your guests through a special menu paired with the beauty of blushing rosé wine.

Take a guided trip across the state to fly fish for the four native cutthroat species in an effort to complete the Utah Cutthroat Slam. This trip for two includes an Orvis Helios rod and a Blue Halo fiberglass rod with reels and lines, two Orvis sling packs, private casting lessons with Steve Schmidt, and customized rod grip art from Tim Johnson. Transportation and meals provided. Will likely require four full days of travel/fishing in the summer of 2024. Lodging for possible overnight stays can be arranged. A valid Utah fishing license is required. Courtesy of Brett Prettyman, Western Rivers Flyfisher, Orvis, Blue Halo, Tim Johnson, Steve Schmidt, Fish Tech Outfitters.

Ski Vacation at Deer Crest

The Ultimate Dinner Party

Make yourself and your friends or family at home in a private luxury ski-inand-out home in the gated Deer Crest community in Deer Valley. The house accommodates 20 people with seven bedrooms, five king-sized beds, and a bunk room that sleeps six, plus 10 baths. The recreation room is equipped with a pool table, shuffleboard, and game table, plus an outdoor spa/hot tub and a movie theater. It would be tempting to stay put, but you’ll want to take advantage of Deer Valley’s perfectly groomed slopes with complimentary ski passes. Top your stay off with dinner at RIME at the St. Regis Deer Valley, a signature restaurant that serves traditional American cuisine in an elegant rustic setting.

Host up to 10 lucky guests in your home for the most exclusive concert and dinner party of the year! Culinary giants Mikel Trapp and Lloyd Kianfar of Trio, will create a custom menu with fresh, enticing flavors matched to the season. After dinner, savor a private concert by pianist Kurt Bestor. An Emmy Award-winning composer/performer of music ranging from film scores to hymns, Kurt has been connecting with audiences in sold-out concert halls for more than 30 years. Give your guests an experience of art, cuisine, and music they will cherish for years to come. No piano? We will arrange delivery and tuning of a beautiful rental.

Wine Tasting and Pasatiempo

Paradise on the Island of Kauai

Take advantage of the beauty of California’s coastal wonders with a private wine tasting for four in the atmospheric cave at Sonoma’s award-winning Deerfield Ranch Winery. A little further down the coast around Santa Cruz, enjoy a round of golf for four at the historic, Alister MacKenzie-designed Pasatiempo Golf Course. Cap it all off with a relaxing stay in a fun, retro-chic room with an ocean view at the Dream Inn Santa Cruz.

Experience Hawaii with carefree island comfort. The Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu Beach on Kauai blends casual luxury with the timeless natural beauty of the island. This two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite is thoughtfully designed to bring the tranquility of paradise into your room through its disappearing glass doors while you enjoy every modern amenity. For six nights, four guests can wake to a dream that is the island of Kauai. Breathe in the ocean air from your expansive lanai, swim in our award-winning pool, cook up some local flavor in your full kitchen, and spend your evenings walking the edge of the surf. The Koloa Landing resort is the largest of any Poipu hotels and is infused inside and out with the aloha spirit.
