MOREHEAD-CAIN DONOR REPORT | 2012–2013 | 1
Dear Friends, Thank you. These words begin and end this book. More importantly, they express the depth of gratitude we have for each of you—as the investors of time, talents, and contributions to the Morehead-Cain Program. Thank you, class of 2013. Morehead-Cains initiate, they influence, and they inspire. They also give. This year, every graduating scholar in the class of 2013 made a contribution to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund through the Senior Class Campaign. This astounding example of generosity demonstrates their desire to see more scholars creating impact on campus each year, and inspires us all to invest as they have invested. Thank you, alumni. Your gift to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund affords us the opportunity to grow the program alongside the University’s growth. We will help our scholars become the leaders of tomorrow as they learn, grow, and collaborate to provide innovative answers to community and global challenges. What a worthwhile investment it is to support the creativity and ambition of our next generation of scholars! Thank you, Morehead-Cain community. We all—scholars, alumni, family members, and friends—comprise a family. Call it a “network,” call each other “cousins,” but, whatever the designation, we thank you for always answering when Morehead-Cain calls. Every time you connect with anyone in the community, whether a potential scholar or an old classmate, the program becomes stronger. As we welcome our 61st class of Morehead-Cain Scholars, we face the reality that without the support of alumni and friends, we cannot continue as the Foundation has done for so many years, and certainly cannot grow at the rapid pace of the University at large. Please join me and the entire class of 2013 in considering the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund as you direct your future gifts to our University.
With warmest best wishes,
Keith Cowan ’78 Chair, Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund Board of Directors

A Conversation: The Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund Board The Morehead-Cain Foundation established the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund in 2004 to support, grow, and enhance the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Program. Board of directors members provost Bruce Carney and scholars Madhu Vulimiri and Hudson Vincent shared what they’ve learned and why they believe in the Morehead-Cain Program.
The Morehead-Cain Foundation provides the academic nucleus of the University.
It’s my investment in the F0undation, because I know the Foundation has invested in me.
By supporting Morehead-Cain, you are supporting significant elements of higher education that need to be fostered.

Dr. Bruce Carney
When I was asked to join the board, I was surprised, like many of your alumni, that the scholarship fund had been established. This Foundation has been one of the premier programs in the country and has been for a long time and, historically, the scholarship was funded by the endowment. The creation of this fund has been a wonderful start to maximizing the number of scholars you bring to campus and to maximizing their opportunities. Early on in my board membership, I said what I really thought about the Morehead-Cain Program. The MoreheadCain Foundation provides the academic nucleus of the University. You attract such incredible talent and that itself echoes across campus. More and more, people want to come to Carolina because of the type of talent that comes through this program. Morehead-Cain sets the standard for global education, engaged scholarship, service, and networking, which is what we want all of our students to have at UNC. The opportunities are so numerous for your current scholars, and we need additional funding and resources to maximize these efforts. When alumni engage with the program through their investment and their commitment, you can expand the imprint that the Morehead-Cain Program is making on the University.

Madhu Vulimiri ’14 As a scholar delegate on the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund Board, I have been privileged to see just how much staff and alumni value the insights of current scholars and are constantly working to strengthen this program. One of my favorite board experiences was presenting findings from scholar focus groups that Hudson and I conducted and seeing the energy and excitement with which the board members received our feedback. They gave us great tips on how to make our recommendations a reality, and to make sure the scholar voice is constantly highlighted. This board is a cross section of Morehead-Cains around the world who are incredibly engaging and supportive. When it comes down to it, I give back to Morehead-Cain every year as a way to show that I profoundly appreciate what the program has done for me. I came into college feeling quite certain of what I wanted to do when I grew up. Morehead-Cain challenged me to push my boundaries and simultaneously gave me the tools to explore my interests. At Carolina and beyond, this program has opened so many doors for me—many that I didn’t know existed—and has urged me to tap into our vast web of resources. While I’ve only given small monthly gifts to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund, I hope that that amount can grow over time. It’s my investment in the F0undation, because I know the Foundation has invested in me. Four years ago, the Foundation could have invested in any of the other students at finalist weekend, but they chose me as one of the people to come into this family of support. So giving back is something I can do as a student to show my appreciation of the program. This year, I am really looking forward to the Senior Class Campaign. For seniors, giving back to Morehead-Cain is largely symbolic—this is the start of a new, but long-lasting relationship with the Foundation. It’s the first time that we, the class of 2014, are committing to supporting this program and extending its life beyond the time that we landed on the steps of the Morehead Planetarium. We have a responsibility to make sure that our cherished Morehead-Cain experiences exist for future scholars. Giving back, even a little bit as a senior, is a way to show what the program has meant to us. Everything counts.

My belief in and commitment to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Program is deeper than it’s ever been. It’s not from a need to give back to a program which has given so much to me, necessarily, it’s more of a belief in the power of supporting excellence in education, supporting leadership and creativity, supporting passion and ambition in the ways the Morehead-Cain Scholarship does. By supporting Morehead-Cain, you are supporting significant elements of higher education that need to be fostered. It’s really my belief in Morehead-Cain’s mission that has enhanced my resolve and commitment. I think it’s a difficult task approaching your peers for money during the Senior Class Campaign, given the way that scholars interact with the Foundation during their undergraduate years. It’s not obvious from the scholar perspective that the Foundation is in need. Scholars are presented with a fantastic set of support and resources from the staff to help pursue their passions and interests while at Carolina. The thought of investing in the future of the program while still here, and after as alumni, doesn’t naturally cross their minds. Being on the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund Board has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding about the state of the Foundation and everything that goes into providing the resources for our scholar experience. This made it easy for me to articulate to other scholars why their help and contribution was needed both now and in the future. Once we started breaking down the numbers and the reasons for supporting Morehead-Cain, every single scholar gave back to Morehead-Cain this year, raising over $1,500 for the Foundation. It was an extraordinary feat and the first time this has ever happened. I’m very proud to be a part of this class of scholars.

We thank our parents, staff, alums, and all of the trustees, For driving us toward greatness and then handing us the keys. Planning for the future: The John Motley Morehead Society The John Motley Morehead Society planned-giving society was created in 2007 to recognize the legacy gifts of alumni and friends and to pay tribute to the founder of the Morehead-Cain Program. John Motley Morehead believed that an investment in the education of young leaders would yield the greatest return and make the biggest difference in our world. It was this conviction that led him to establish a trust in 1945 to support the scholarship program and to later turn it into a permanent legacy through a substantial additional gift by bequest in 1965. It is this same conviction that inspires the planned giving of alumni and friends. It is with gratitude and esteem that we recognize the following members of the John Motley Morehead Society: James L. Alexandre ’79 Charles P. Brown ’64 Richard G. Cashwell ’59 Lucy H. Chatham Robert F. Coleman III ’68 Keith O. Cowan ’78 Francis H. Craighill III ’61 Joseph M. Craver ’63 Kenneth W. Epps William A. Graham ’66 Shauna Holiman and Robert H. Membership in this society is open to all alumni, parents, and friends who document a bequest, retirement plan designation, charitable trust, or gift annuity to benefit the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund.

Why we give: Robert Hackney ’75
Robert Hackney ’75 is Senior Managing Director of First Eagle Investment Management, LLC in New York City. He is a member of the John Motley Morehead Society, a designation that recognizes his commitment to the Foundation through planned giving.
My wife Shauna and I have been very, very lucky. Years ago, a scholar doing an internship in New York for the summer wrote us looking for a place to stay, and there happened to be an open apartment in the building where we lived. We asked if we could borrow the apartment for the summer, and the owner graciously said yes. So we had the first of many scholars come into our lives. That was over twenty years ago. Since that time, we have been fortunate enough to spend time with many current and former scholars and our lives have been enriched by that contact. We made the decision to join the John Motley Morehead Society to try to perpetuate that enrichment for others. There are really at least two and probably more advantages of planned giving. As Shauna says, since we don’t have children, our children are many of the scholars. And that’s the first reason we are completely committed to planned giving. The point of estate planning for most people is to take care of their children. I think that if you’ve been a Morehead-Cain Scholar you consider the scholarship and the alumni network your family (and the future scholars your children). And I think there’s a place in everybody’s estate plan for that child. I think all of us who have been Morehead-Cain Scholars should have a spot in our estate plan for the child who is the next Morehead-Cain Scholar. I think the future generations of scholars are pretty cool. That’s why it matters to us. The second advantage of planned giving is that, if you look at the community of Morehead-Cain Scholars as a whole, few of us have the capacity in terms of creating great wealth like Mr. Morehead and Mr. Cain, and fewer are able to give it away with a sizeable, impactful gift during our lifetime. However, many of us can truly and safely, like Mr. Morehead and Mr. Cain, make a sizeable, impactful gift upon our death, because that’s when we don’t need it anymore. You can really look at your lifetime cumulatively and know what will have the biggest impact both at Chapel Hill and probably in the world: creating a spot for a Morehead-Cain Scholar. So, what we want to do is create the opportunity for another one and another one and another one, and planned giving is a great way to do that. It allows you to have enough impact not only to replace yourself, but with any luck, provide the opportunity and resources for another one, maybe even two or three.

Caroline Orr (top right) of Memphis, Tennessee, was a featured artist in the show, “The Water of Life: Artistic Expressions,” at the FedEx Global Education Center last spring. The proceeds of her auction benefited the student organization A Drink For Tomorrow (ADFT) and its water pipeline construction projects in Las Cocas, Peru.

A scholar’s thank you.
Caroline Orr ’16
It’s interesting how the combination of a certain place and a lapse of time elicits very sharp, lucid memories. As I write this reflection while home in Memphis, I feel ever closer to the memory of who I was a year ago this time, eager for graduation and my life at Carolina to unfold in three months’ time. I believe Carolina, more than anything, has taught me to embrace every single circumstance as a learning experience. It has become increasingly apparent to me that I must wholeheartedly embrace challenge and opportunity alike with a learning mentality. Of course, as I put that into words, I can only confess it sounds cliché—and that it sounds like the sort of statement any rising college sophomore would be expected to say in reflection of the past year. I want to say thank you for this gift of an education. Thank you for providing a pathway, a call to action, and inspiration to strive for goals and dreams. Through the Morehead-Cain Program, we are endowed with the tools we’ll need to construct layers of our lives. I believe I speak for most of my fellow scholars in asserting that our passions and interests have never manifested themselves unilaterally. We are the premed English majors, the Art History/Econ double majors, the baseball pitchers, the beekeepers, the filmmakers, the squash captains, the bureaucracy, and the start-up innovators. Our challenge is to seek unity and cohesion among the different elements of which we’re comprised. And as we’re challenged to link interdisciplinary focuses, we embark on a lifelong process of both discovery and collaboration. If a scholar confesses confusion with regard to his or her “life’s direction,” the truth is that confusion is code for “linking.” I believe we are all linkers. As we enter Carolina with multifaceted perspectives and intentions, Morehead-Cain supports a holistic exploration process so that little by little, we encounter new links and fuse the pieces of our story chain together. I’m beginning to understand the long-term significance of the Morehead-Cain Foundation and Program. More than anything I believe we are all cultivating a mindset, a style of thinking and a style of caring that becomes an embedded component of who we are. With each impression and experience extracted during our lifetimes, we’ll see niches of opportunity then act accordingly, doing our part to help leave this world a better place. I’m thankful to be part of such a dynamic community within the Morehead-Cain Program, and I am forever grateful for the gift I’ve been given. Thank you.
