Dear Friends,

John Motley Morehead III made a promise to help young leaders learn, grow, and pursue their passions, believing they would one day make a difference in the world around them. Gordon Cain shared Uncle Mot’s vision and generous spirit, and it is dependent on us— alumni, scholars, staff, and friends—to ensure their promise is fulfilled.

you possess, and realize the promise our selection committees have seen in you, you will make this dream come true.’”

We are up to the challenge. Morehead-Cain Scholars are thinkers, creators, and adventurers who embrace the responsibility of being leaders at the University. This year, one scholar navigated the complexities of serving as student body president, and then offered guidance to the fellow scholar elected to replace him. Other scholars served honorably throughout student government, on various committees across campus, and with countless student-run organizations. The class of 2014 included a Luce Scholar, a Fulbright Scholar, two Fulbright Teaching Assistantship winners, and five winners of Chancellor’s Awards, among others. These students continue to demonstrate that the scholar’s journey is about exploration, inspiration, and the celebration of working together. It is also about giving back. In addition to generous financial support, many alumni donated their time and wisdom to scholars and the Foundation. They met with scholars during our Alumni-in-Residence Program and Alumni Speaker Series, sharing stories of triumph, failure, and lessons learned. Others hosted scholars during summer enrichment experiences, and dozens more played a vital role in helping select the class of 2018. We are grateful for the generous gift from Woods Davy ’72, whose sculpture continues to captivate scholars, staff, and visitors to the Foundation months after its installation. We also owe special thanks to Naimul Huq ’08 and Glenna Patton ’86, whose creative thought partnership has proven invaluable. The success of the program has always depended on its scholars and alumni. Sixty years ago, the trustees wrote, “if you keep faith with yourself, strive whole-heartedly to develop the talents you possess, and realize the promise our selection committees have seen in you, you will make this dream come true.” As we begin the 70th year of the Morehead-Cain Foundation, I believe Uncle Mot would appreciate what we have managed to accomplish—and what we still strive to achieve. Your dedication to the program is an inspiration, and I am honored to work with so many committed scholars, alumni, staff, and supporters. Have a wonderful year, and please do visit the Foundation the next time you are in Chapel Hill. Best wishes,

Charles E. Lovelace, Jr. ’77 Executive Director

Why I Give to Morehead-Cain My experience as a Morehead-Cain Scholar taught me that all of the rules we take for granted as givens in life don’t really exist, and don’t have to constrain our ability to truly live and experience life. I realized that I have the freedom to create my own exciting, fulfilling, and joyful life. This program—and more importantly the people behind this program—set me on my way down this path. And every day I am grateful for their having done so.

“This gift is a small token of appreciation for what the Morehead-Cain Program has done for me, and a simple way to help ensure that talented, caring individuals in subsequent classes will get to have the same transformative experience that I had, and will use their experience to better their communities and our world.”

—Tom Thriveni ’10 From a note submitted with his online gift to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund

I don’t even want to call it a scholarship. It’s so much more— it’s a unique community, a unique family, a unique opportunity.”

The Parents’ Perspective: Karen Knoble and Barry Bobrow Asked what they learned while watching their daughter thrive as a Morehead-Cain Scholar, Anna Bobrow’s mother and father shot each other a knowing look. “I would have done college differently,” Karen Knoble said, laughing. Anna’s parents say there are still moments when they have a hard time believing all that their daughter accomplished and experienced during her four years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They admit that the sense of disbelief first felt during the selection process has been hard to shake. “I remember thinking there was no way it was going to happen,” Barry Bobrow said, reflecting on the implications of winning such a significant award. The scholarship had an immediate impact on Anna, who graduated from the University in May. Her parents say she returned home from her first summer enrichment experience— a National Outdoor Leadership School course—more mature and self-confident. And they marveled as Anna continued to push herself throughout her four years at UNC, working one summer in Zanzibar and spending another as an intern with the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. “I don’t even want to call it a scholarship,” Karen said. “It’s so much more—it’s a unique community, a unique family, a unique opportunity.” As parents, Barry and Karen say they are grateful Anna’s experiences made her a happier person. They also appreciate the impact the Morehead-Cain had on the entire family. “We didn’t pay for her education, and it was a phenomenal education,” Barry said. “It was really a gift of the Morehead-Cain to the whole family.” The family now believes it is obligated to give back. Not only out of gratitude for Anna’s experience, but to help provide the same opportunities to other families. It is why Anna’s parents made a gift to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund and hope other parents will consider doing the same. “Every parent of a Morehead-Cain Scholar should internalize the impact that the scholarship had on their family,” Karen said. She added that the fact that every member of Anna’s class made a gift also mattered. “If alumni feel like it’s worthwhile to support, then we will too,” she added. For Barry, the decision to contribute to the scholarship fund was an obvious one. “Forget the financial side of it,” he said. “It’s the value of all those experiences. We couldn’t have offered her those.” Karen nodded her head in agreement. “We need to keep this going,” she said.

Dear Friends,

Morehead-Cain

I am inspired and humbled.

Alumni family.

Your dedication to each other—fellow alumni, current scholars, and friends—is remarkable. As is your commitment to the program that first brought us to Chapel Hill as curious young scholars, determined to make a difference. Your efforts fulfill a promise shared among Morehead-Cain Alumni around the world.

For the second

Thank you for all that you do. I first wrote to you three years ago that the Morehead-Cain needed our support. That the rapid rise in the cost of tuition was threatening the number of dreamers and adventurers we could invite to our beloved University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And that, if the program was to continue providing scholars the same types of life-altering experiences that defined our time at Carolina, it was going to need our help.

straight year, every graduating senior contributed to the Fund through the Senior Class Campaign.”

You listened and you gave. Many of you invested in current and future scholars with a generous donation to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund. This year’s honor roll includes all of the newest members of the Morehead-Cain Alumni family. For the second straight year, every graduating senior contributed to the Fund through the Senior Class Campaign. Your contributions are helping our scholars flourish and grow into the promising young leaders needed to maintain the University’s standing as one of the finest public universities in the world. Your tireless—and selfless—devotion to Morehead-Cain demonstrates that the strongest families truly are those in which all the members take care of each other. Thank you for understanding that there is no greater gift to Carolina than a gift to support Morehead-Cain. I hope all of you will continue to join me in considering the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund as you direct your gifts to our University. Sincerely,

Keith Cowan ’78 Chairman, Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund Board of Directors

Giving 100% FACT: Every single scholar in the last three graduating classes of Morehead-Cain seniors made a financial contribution

to UNC as part of Carolina’s Senior Class Campaign, and 100% of the classes of 2013 and 2014 made donations to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund. The Senior Class Campaign encourages all UNC seniors to make a gift to the area of campus that means the most to them. What inspired these seniors to give a total of $7,561.03 to Morehead-Cain? Three of them share their reasons.

“The Morehead-Cain gives students four years of extraordinary opportunities. Through this scholarship, students are able to weave together stories and experiences that profoundly impact their lives and the lives of others around them. The uniqueness of the four summers enables students to start their careers with a world of knowledge. My four summers have helped to build a story of genuine interest in dedicating my life to medicine. My experiences are still topics for conversation, even in my scientific meetings. Giving to the Morehead-Cain is akin to giving a key that will continuously unlock unique doors of opportunity for years to come.”

Shenise Gilyard ’12

“From the moment I arrived in Wyoming for my NOLS course before my freshman year at UNC until today, the Morehead-Cain family has provided me with a lifetime’s worth of memories and opportunities. The wide array of experiences and close relationships with the Foundation staff, fellow scholars, and Morehead-Cain Alumni has been extraordinary, and their generosity of time and guidance, priceless. So, I give every year as a way to thank so many of my MoreheadCain family members who have given so much to me and my fellow scholars, and to ensure the legacy of giving and the creation of opportunities for future scholars. My commitment to giving each year is, in part, a way to say ‘thank you’ and to stay connected to this incredible family.” Oliver Rose ’13

“When I look back on my time as a Morehead-Cain Scholar, I realize that I was constantly challenged to lead, to serve, to think, and to create. I was always supported in the endeavors that I knew I wanted to pursue, but I was also stretched by my peers and by the staff to try new experiences. I am so thankful for the formative life experiences at Carolina and around the world that have shaped who I am today—many of which would not have happened without the MoreheadCain Scholarship Program. I give back so that future scholars can have their own adventures and follow their dreams, and maybe even discover new ones.”

THE MOREHEAD-CAIN SELECTION PROCESS The Morehead-Cain selection process begins as five distinct processes, each leveraging the expertise of Foundation staff, a corps of professional readers, and hundreds of alumni interviewers and volunteer evaluators. Candidates enter our process via nomination—either their schools’ or their own—and a team of readers render initial assessments and make recommendations. It is the task of these assessors to answer the essential question: Should this applicant be considered for a semifinal interview? North Carolinians and British candidates are interviewed in person at the semifinalist stage, while all others choose between a telephone or Skype conversation with Foundation staff or trained alumni. The UNC Office of Undergraduate Admissions also refers to our process particularly strong Early Action applicants. From semifinal interviews, 126 finalists are identified and invited to campus for Final Selection Weekend—the point where all five selection pathways converge. For nearly four days, finalists explore Carolina, meet their scholar and candidate peers, and complete two panel interviews with small groups of our Central Selection Committee. These interviews are designed to be warm and inviting, to set the candidates at ease so that they might showcase themselves with confidence. Interviews are weighed and discussed at length, after which interviewer groups make final recommendations to Morehead-Cain trustees and selection staff. Scholarship offers are ultimately made to slightly more than half of our finalist group, depending on the target class size. In mid-March, recruitment efforts ramp up as we mobilize Carolina faculty and administrators, current scholars, and Morehead-Cain Alumni to reach out to our recipients and encourage them to accept our offer. The finalized class is announced to the public in April.

British Selection Process All British secondary schools are eligible to participate in the Morehead-Cain selection process. Administration of the British Programme and selection process is coordinated by the Morehead-Cain Foundation. The London-based British MoreheadCain Scholarship Committee—established by British Morehead-Cain Alumni—oversees the selection process in Great Britain. The scholarship committee designates a selection committee, which interviews nominees in London and selects three to four students to interview as finalists in Chapel Hill. The selection committee works closely with a number of educational charities and associations, including the Sutton Trust and the US-UK Fulbright Commission, and also with Winston House— UNC’s home in London. THE SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM Celebrating its 40th anniversary this summer, the Morehead-Cain Summer Enrichment Program has evolved over the years into the centerpiece of the Morehead-Cain experience. This first-of-its-kind program consists of four diverse summers, strategically designed to help Morehead-Cain Scholars understand more about the world and how they can make a difference in it. These four experiences—Outdoor Leadership, Public Service, Inquiry and Exploration, and Private Enterprise—provide the framework for scholars to gain confidence, independence, global awareness, and hands-on experience. Morehead-Cain summers provide experiences that many students might not be able to arrange or afford on their own. With the full resources of the Morehead-Cain Foundation staff, Morehead-Cain Alumni, and friends of the program behind them, scholars have practically limitless opportunities at their fingertips. They receive stipends each summer to cover expenses, and benefit from a legacy of alumni who are eager to help the next generation of scholars in their journey. With guidance from Morehead-Cain advisors, scholars tailor their summers to explore and expand their personal and professional interests—wherever in the world those interests take them.

Jim has mentioned that I will get credit for my work on both the Michigan over-criminalization project and the disability report, so I could end up with my name on two Manhattan Institute reports come this fall when they are published! That has been one of the incredible things about getting the chance to intern with Jim Copland this summer: he is willing to give his interns a great deal of responsibility, and is extremely generous in making sure they get full credit for all their work. I have just been trying to produce work that is worthy of the trust he has put in me!”

—Meghan Herwig ’15 interned this summer with Morehead-Cain Alumnus Jim Copland ’94 at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research in New York. From Meghan’s July 28, 2014, Biweekly Report.

The John Motley Morehead Society The John Motley Morehead Society planned-giving society was created in 2007 to recognize the legacy gifts of alumni and friends and to pay tribute to the founder of the Morehead-Cain Program. John Motley Morehead believed that an investment in the education of young leaders would yield the greatest return and make the biggest difference in our world. It was this conviction that led him to establish a trust in 1945 to support the scholarship program and to later turn it into a permanent legacy through a substantial additional gift by bequest in 1965. It is this same conviction that inspires the planned giving of alumni and friends. With gratitude and esteem, we recognize the following members of the John Motley Morehead Society: James Lawrence Alexandre ’79 Oliver Filley Ames, Jr. ’85 Timothy John Balch ’67 Charles Palmer Brown ’64 Stephen Eugene Buie ’77 Jack Pool Byrd ’72 Robert Marshall Campbell ’74 Richard Gordon Cashwell ’59 Lucy H. “ In Good Society: Mike Deimler ’86 Mike Deimler ’86 vividly remembers the happiness he experienced upon learning he won the Morehead Scholarship. He also recalls the feelings of responsibility—and gratitude— that came with winning such a life-altering award. “My mother always used to say, ‘for those to whom much is given, much is expected,’” Deimler said. “She used to just drill it into my head when I was kid.” The childhood lesson stuck. Deimler, who celebrated his fiftieth birthday this year, is now finding ways to give back to the people and organizations that he credits for positively affecting his life. The milestone led him to reflect, and as he and his wife updated their estate plans, Deimler says he realized there was no organization he wanted to support more than the Morehead-Cain Foundation.

It’s the ethos of the entire program. The experience of being a scholar reinforces the notion that every day counts, and that you need to find a way to make a difference.”

“I don’t know how other people feel,” he said. “But when I stopped to think about it—and I’m saying this from the heart—I could not think of another organization that had a more meaningful impact on my life.” Deimler is among the growing number of alumni who belong to the John Motley Morehead Society. Created in 2007 to honor “Uncle Mot” and those who choose to follow in his generous footsteps, the society welcomes all alumni and friends who either include the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund in their will, make the fund a beneficiary of their retirement plan, or arrange another type of deferred gift. In the Deimler family’s case, they chose to grant both specific and contingent bequests from their estate. To make things simple, they also nominated a percentage of their estate rather than a fixed dollar amount, meaning the bequest will continue to grow over time. “I think it’s a great cause,” Deimler said. For Deimler, the scholarship went beyond academics. Growing up in a modest, western North Carolina household, he says the experience exposed him to more of the world and broadened his perspective. He was grateful to be selected, felt privileged to be around other scholars, and was struck by the level of shared aspiration for doing more. Deimler believes paying tribute to Uncle Mot is the right thing to do next. “It’s the ethos of the entire program,” he said. “The experience of being a scholar reinforces the notion that every day counts, and that you need to find a way to make a difference.” Deimler hopes other alumni will share his sentiments and help the Scholarship Fund grow, ensuring that future scholars will have the opportunity to experience the same lifechanging adventures they did. “We all should update our estate plans from time to time,” Deimler said. “And including the Foundation in some way is another opportunity to give back.” Deimler says the math is simple—the more who give, the more whose lives will be impacted. “Whatever you can give, it’s rewarding to feel like you’re making a contribution.”

THE DISCOVERY FUND Launched in 2008, the Discovery Fund is one of the more recent innovations to the Morehead-Cain Program. Through the Discovery Fund, each scholar may apply for grants of up to a total of $8,000 over the course of his or her four years at Carolina. Discovery Fund grants allow scholars to say “yes” to serendipitous opportunities that will accelerate their life experience and increase their self-awareness. The Discovery Fund provides opportunities to explore new ideas, develop practical skills, and connect with Morehead-Cain Alumni.

The Discovery Fund . . . Inspires self-discovery · challenging scholars to dream, develop, and explore · encouraging scholars to be active participants rather than passive observers in the world · feeding scholars’ insatiable curiosity Cultivates leadership · strengthening scholars to have the courage to see a need and take action to meet it · inspiring scholars to engage in thought leadership · enabling scholars to gain practical experience and skills that will enhance their development as leaders · prompting them to bring their learning experiences back to campus Catalyzes connections · mobilizing the Morehead-Cain network of doers, dreamers, thinkers, and adventurers · giving scholars the tools to network with interesting people · sparking conversations within the community Enables scholars to embrace the journey · empowering them to embody grit and perseverance in “stretch” experiences · equipping them to navigate obstacles and pivot to new directions · emboldening them to counter fear with ambition and excitement for the journey

How do scholars use the Discovery Fund? Scholars have used Discovery Funds for participating in workshops, retreats, and clinics; for presenting at conferences; for shadowing, networking, and informational interviewing opportunities; for conducting research; for pursuing innovative ideas; and for unique skill acquisition. Norman Archer ’17 and Amy Woff ’17 conducted medical anthropology research in Otavalo, Ecuador. From Norman’s final report on the research trip: “It was simply uncanny how much this trip overlapped with the anthropology class I am taking this semester. Every day, topics from our lectures would come up in the fantastic interviews we had. I had a firsthand experience using etic and emic perspectives (outside and inside perspectives) that affirmed my interest in anthropology. In fact, I recently changed my major to anthropology and could not be happier about it! Furthermore, after conducting a weeklong project on the dichotomy of the two healing systems in Ecuador, the subsequent lecture in class was on medical pluralism!”

61

It was awesome to have just lived and experienced the very situations we were now talking about in class, and I am still reeling from the amazing encounters I had in Otavalo.” — Norman Archer ’17 after returning from Ecuador, where he used a Morehead-Cain Discovery Fund grant to research the relationship between traditional and Western medicines

Morehead-Cain Partners Through sustained loyalty and generosity, our Morehead-Cain Partners join us in our mission of sustaining and enhancing the excellence of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Our partners’ contributions of $100,000 or more over time, through cumulative annual-fund giving and deferred-gift commitments, ensure the success of the Morehead-Cain Program today and tomorrow. The Morehead-Cain has taught me this: no matter what the situation—whether I’m facing the challenges of entering a new culture or attempting to navigate the icy waters of the Rockies— I can handle it. For it is not the fear of uncertainty that has made each new experience at Carolina great, but the excitement of possibility. And for that, I am so grateful.” — Clay Hackney, Class of 2015

Yeah, I guess you won’t become a better person because you receive the Morehead-Cain. You are the person that you are. What you’ll have is opportunity. . . . And Elliot asked about imagination. Well, I’ll ask you. If you had a summer to go anywhere and do anything, what would you do? If you could change the world through a community service project, what would you do? If you had the chance to work anyplace, to contact anybody and work anywhere, what would you do? And again, it really is your imagination.”

2014 Senior Class Campaign Through the University’s Senior Class Campaign, graduating scholars are invited to make a financial gift to the area of campus that means the most to them. The Campaign educates UNC seniors about the importance of private giving, and encourages them to start their own tradition of giving back to their alma mater. Because 100% of the Morehead-Cain Class of 2013 made a gift to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund through last year’s Senior Class Campaign, it seemed impossible for the Class of 2014 to break their record this year—but they found a way! This year’s senior class was again at 100%—every senior made a gift to Morehead-Cain—but they also raised more than $2,200 over last year’s total. This year’s class—with the help of matching gifts from several generous alumni—contributed more than $4,000 to the Fund. We send our sincere thanks to Madhu Vulimiri and the rest of the Senior Class Campaign Committee for their enthusiasm and hard work, and to the Class of 2014 for their generous support of Carolina and Morehead-Cain! This week Emily gave me a copy of Mr. Morehead’s speech to the graduating class in 1959. Fifty-five years ago, at this same dinner, Uncle Mot listed off some of the tips for life after graduation. They included advice like: open a bank account; get a job at a big growing company; be interested in politics; get along with people—all important things. Yet, in reading the speech, there is a quote that stands out, and I think remains true regardless of the times:

“He writes, ‘Stay with it, play the game, play it according to the rules. If you get hurt, don’t holler; if you lose, pay up. Nobody can win all of the time. Play it hard, for any machine—electrical, human, or mechanical—shows its greatest efficiency when loaded closest to its capacity.’ “I think that we did push each other to a certain capacity here—at least to our perceived limitations and then beyond them—and as a collective we played hard, we stuck with it, we lost at times, but we never gave up on it. That is all that we could have asked for.”
