Frequently-Asked Questions Are scholarships available? Yes! Your school may qualify for scholarship assistance with a field trip to Morehead, mobile lab visit, mobile planetarium visit or classroom/afterschool enrichment visit. You will have the option to request scholarship funding when you complete your online reservation form. My students are studying science topics that aren’t covered by your current programs. Can you still help us? If you have a special curriculum need for your school or afterschool program, please let us know! Morehead is continually expanding its program choices, and our educators may be able to help you meet special needs. Do you offer professional development opportunities? Morehead educators present workshops at various state conferences each year. Look for us during fall 2015 at NCSTA and Bridging the Gap conferences. Are your programs available in different languages? All Morehead programs are available in English. Some planetarium shows are also available with audio tracks in Spanish. Are your programs accessible to persons with disabilities? At Morehead, GSK Fulldome Theater and Science Stage are both accessible by ramp and offer assistive listening devices. Morehead’s mobile labs are equipped with wheelchair lifts, and the mobile planetarium walls can be lifted for wheelchair access. Please contact Morehead’s guest relations manager at 919-962-1236 for additional information. Can each person pay individually? To offer group pricing, Morehead requires a single payment by check or credit card (MasterCard or Visa) from the school. You will receive an invoice in advance, confirming the total participants and the amount due. For a field trip at Morehead, payment is due by the day of your visit. For a mobile visit at your school, payment is due 10 days in advance. May a charter operator make arrangements for our field trip? Morehead policy requires that we communicate directly with an official representative of the school. If a third party (charter operator, travel agent, other trip planner) who is not a school employee makes arrangements for a field trip, the third party is responsible financially, and the third party must submit full payment at least two weeks in advance of the field trip. The number of people in our group has changed. What do we do? If you need to make changes to your reservation, please contact us at least 72 hours before a field trip at Morehead or 7 days before a mobile visit at your school. If you have fewer people without providing the minimum notice, your school is still financially responsible for the full cost of your original reservation. If you have more people without providing the minimum notice, Morehead cannot guarantee their participation. In case of inclement weather, we will work with you to reschedule your program with no penalty.

Planetarium Shows Make reservations for this 360° experience and surround your students with the sights, sounds and sensations of an extraordinary educational adventure! Morehead planetarium shows are an exciting way to engage and inspire your students with a love of science — whether you are seated in the historic GSK Fulldome Theater (on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) or inside a mobile planetarium conveniently set up inside your own school gym or multipurpose room. Turn Your Gym Into A Planetarium! North Carolina is a big state, and some schools are too far away from Chapel Hill to complete a field trip within a school day. Morehead’s mobile programs bring the field trip experience to your school! Your choices include planetarium shows in Morehead’s mobile planetarium (Grades K–12), real-world science laboratory experiences in Morehead’s mobile lab (Grades 6–12) or classroom enrichment visits filled with hands-on activities and demonstrations with a Morehead educator. Mobile programs are affordable, educational and convenient. They’re available for afterschool programs, too! Make your reservations now for the best choice of visit dates.
MOBILE PLANETARIUM VISITS (previously known as PLANETS)
If your school is at least 90 miles from Chapel Hill, or if your school is within a 90-mile radius but is in a Tier 1 school district, Morehead can bring its planetarium shows to you! Morehead’s mobile planetarium is an inflatable dome with a digital projection system that creates the fulldome planetarium experience at your school. Length: 45 minutes. Maximum capacity: 30 students in Grades K–3; 24 students in Grades 4–7; 20 students in Grades 8–12. The mobile planetarium can accommodate wheelchairs. At least one teacher must accompany the students inside the mobile planetarium. To accommodate the mobile planetarium, you must have a site with these requirements: • Quiet indoor room (if the mobile planetarium will be in a gym or play space, please arrange for other activities to be moved outside or to another room) • Minimum clear floor space of 30 feet by 30 feet • Minimum ceiling height of 13 feet with no obstructions (hanging light fixtures, fans, etc.) • Two grounded 120-volt standard electric outlets • Clean, swept floor • Adjustable lighting, if possible • Air conditioning for visits occuring May–September Please see Pages 5–7 for a complete list of Morehead’s currently-available planetarium shows — any show with the green bus icon can come to your school!

MOBILE LAB VISITS (previously known as DESTINY/DREAMS)
More than a quarter-million North Carolina students have climbed aboard a Morehead mobile lab to experience hands-on laboratory activities — the same type of real-world experiments that North Carolina scientists conduct every day as part of their research. Length: 90 minutes. Capacity: 24 students. Give your students an opportunity to explore science careers in a laboratory setting with these programs. Morehead mobile labs offer high school and middle school modules; you can request a mobile lab visit whether or not you have participated in DESTINY professional development in the past.

Use a simulated viral extract and perform an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to screen hypothetical patients for the presence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Investigate genetically-inherited characteristics and adaptations, including those used for camouflage. Build a “monster” of varied animal parts and identify a habitat in which it would thrive. Learn how to use star charts and take one home to locate constellations at night. Role-play celestial bodies to demonstrate planetary movement and discover why we have seasons. Create your own constellations!

AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT VISITS Does your school provide afterschool care? Morehead offers its programs for Classroom Enrichment Visits (Page 12) as Afterschool Enrichment Visits, too. Program content may be adapted for afterschool groups that include several different grade levels. Maximum capacity: 20 children per session. If more than 20 children participate in your afterschool program, please schedule additional sessions to accommodate all participants (up to four sessions per day). These sessions are a fun way to provide STEM enrichment to your afterschool program. Morehead’s mobile planetarium is also available for afterschool programs; the “weekend/evening event” fee applies for any mobile planetarium visit occurring after regular school hours.

North Carolina Science Festival — founded and produced by
Morehead in 2010 — is a statewide series of science-themed events hosted by museums, science centers, parks, libraries, schools and many other community sites. In 2016, the Festival is scheduled for April 8–24 and will include hundreds of events, with many free programs and activities. Some events are ideal for class trips! Look for expos (hosted by universities and colleges throughout North Carolina), public lectures, tours and other special activities. All 2016 Festival events will be listed on the Festival website in the months before the Festival begins:

UNC Science Expo Saturday, April 9, 2016 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
UNC-Chapel Hill hosts one of the biggest science expos in the state as part of the NC Science Festival. This free expo features dozens of booths with exhibits and hands-on activities, behindthe-scenes tours of campus research laboratories, presentations by faculty and graduate students, live entertainment, play areas for young children and much more! The UNC Science Expo is a perfect opportunity for students to explore educational and career opportunities in science disciplines including archaeology, astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer sciences, marine science, medical fields, nanotechnology, physics and other fields. Special Opportunities for K–12 Classes As part of the annual North Carolina Science Festival, Morehead invites teachers to submit applications for the Festival’s K–12 initiatives. If your application is selected, you’ll receive free resources to conduct activities for your students in March or April 2016. The Festival will accept applications Aug. 18–Sept. 18, 2015. Duke Energy Science Nights (Grades K–5)
The Festival team distributes event kits, designed to help you host a fun family science night for your students and their families to more than 100 schools. Each kit includes a planning guide, 12 hands-on activities and all materials for up to 200 participants. (Look for six all-new activities in 2016!) Elementary schools, afterschool groups, PTAs and upper-level schools interested in hosting for their local elementary school students are welcome to apply.
Invite-a-Scientist (Grades 6–8)
The Festival team recruits dynamic and dedicated scientists from academia and industry to share their excitement about science with middle school students. Each visit is designed to inspire your students to consider science careers and to engage them in a fun, hands-on activity. Middle school educators are welcome to apply for a visit from a scientist to their classes. Visits may be in person or via Skype.
Science Spotlight (Grades 9–12)
Get your high school students talking about complex, interdisciplinary topics in science that have public policy implications, including energy and climate change. Students will have the unique opportunity to continue the discussion with a Festival-paired scientist in the field. High school educators in the sciences, civics, history or language arts are welcome to apply for this interdisciplinary program.
