NSO2021

LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT Gentlemen of Morehouse: On behalf of Morehouse College and the Board of Trustees, it is my sincere honor to welcome each of you to New Student Orientation, where you will begin your journey as men of Morehouse. You are now in the most important period of adult development. Over the next four years, you will change more than in any subsequent period of your life. You will forge and solidify your sense of self as unique individuals separate from your families and communities of origin. The context in which you experience that discovery and self-definition is critically important. Morehouse offers the ideal environment necessary for that important transition. Your success as scholars and future leaders is our priority. We can honestly say that there is no college in the world like Morehouse College. We have pursued our distinctive mission for 154 years: to develop and educate men with disciplined minds who lead lives of leadership and service. During New Student Orientation, you will be introduced to the proof of our success at delivering on that mission, and the impact we have had on the world. Morehouse Men have led and served with distinction in every aspect of business, government, education, science, the arts, and humanities. Many unique aspects of Morehouse College have contributed to our success. Key for me is the brotherhood that is formed here and the mutual respect, love, and shared purpose that defines it. Talk to any alum who is decades from his date of graduation and he is likely to mention that brotherhood as the most important and enduring aspect of his Morehouse experience. Here, we are fond of saying that “iron sharpens iron.” Your Morehouse brothers will not only embrace you as family, they will also call on you to be better than you thought you could be and support you in doing so. I want to be clear that what comes with acceptance to Morehouse is high expectations. Former President Benjamin E. Mays put it best: “It is expected that a Morehouse Man will be successful.” We have chosen you with the expectation that you have what is required to make the journey from man of Morehouse to Morehouse Man. This assessment is not based solely on academic aptitude, but also on the values and experiences that you shared in your application to Morehouse. You will not journey alone. In addition to your fellow men of Morehouse and a Brotherhood of alumni, you will also have the faculty and staff of the College to support you. Our aim and our purpose is to create conditions where you can discover who you are, what you are capable of, and how you want to make a positive difference in the world. We are committed to your success. We have little doubt that if we partner in the spirit of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. described as “The Beloved Community,” this journey will challenge and reward all of us in rich and valuable ways. Finally, I hope that you will from this day forward think of Morehouse as yours. Find ways to be a leader here and to make Morehouse better than how you found her. Remember, too, that you represent Morehouse when on or off. The meaning of being a man of Morehouse will be shaped by you during your time on this campus. Gentlemen, I am looking forward to being with you on this journey and to seeing each one of you walk across the stage to receive your diploma in four years and accept the mantle of being a Morehouse Man. All the best,

David A. Thomas President, Morehouse College

“I

t must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal, but it is a disaster to have no ideal to capture. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim is sin.” — Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, Sixth President of Morehouse College

WELCOME TO THE HOUSE

New Students & Families

New Student Orientation (NSO) is a week of exciting, enriching, stimulating, and life-changing experiences designed to prepare you for life at Morehouse College. During this week, you will learn about many of the College’s legacies, meet dynamic student leaders, faculty, staff and administrators, and be exposed to resources that will assist you in being a successful student as you pursue your baccalaureate degree. As a new Morehouse scholar, you are bound to have questions, and that is why NSO is designed around you. It answers the questions you have and provides information about campus resources, programs, and services. By the time you leave orientation, you’ll be on your way to becoming a successful Morehouse student. At Morehouse College, we remain committed to our mission to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service. Morehouse has more than 16,000 alumni working globally in every sector. At Morehouse, you will be challenged to be introspective, reflective, accountable, assertive, and responsible in your role as a contributing citizen of the Atlanta University Center and the world. You will also be encouraged to explore the many depths of your potential and to work toward your highest goals. Please review the contents of this booklet. You will be expected to know where to be at all times, and to be punctual and focused for each event.

You are our future leaders. This is a position of authority, respect, and prestige that should not to be taken lightly, both in terms of competency and in pride. During the week, you will meet and bond with other students, both new and returning, some of whom will become your lifelong friends. You will become more effectively adjusted to your new environment. As you move through this week, as well as the academic year ahead, remember that you are in a large metropolitan area and should observe all the rules of caution to ensure your safety. And finally, have fun... because this is the beginning of your lifelong journey.

To help prepare you for the world-at-large, the following is required during NSO.

Wear business attire.

Dress pants, dress shoes, solid dress shirts, and ties (jackets optional) are required for designated occasions; casual attire will be allowed only during certain events.

Low-rider pants, do-rags, and flip-flops are not allowed. All hats are to be removed in campus buildings.

Turn off your cellphones.

Please refrain from using your cellphones during the learning sessions, classes, Crown Forum, and lectures. Remember it’s up to you to get the information you need to become a successful student.

NSO2021 Greetings New Maroon Tigers: Welcome to the next phase of your journey to live a life of purpose, meaning, and consequence. The staff of the Office of Student Services looks forward to supporting you as you embrace your potential and begin to make your mark in society. You represent the next chapter in Morehouse’s storied history of producing men who change the world. We know that the first years of college life are a transition from youth into adulthood, and there is honor in seeking assistance when you need it. Know that all across campus, there are faculty members who will eagerly serve as your mentors, staff members who will help you access resources, and brothers who are there to share the journey with you. As you dive into New Student Orientation week, make it a point to take advantage of the opportunities presented to you to learn about our traditions, get to know your campus community, and prepare yourself for academic success and co-curricular engagement this semester. Remember that how you start your Morehouse journey will affect how you finish it. Make decisions wisely from the beginning. When you make mistakes, own them and grow from them. When you face obstacles, have confidence in the fact that here, you never have to face challenges alone. We are all our brothers’ keepers. You have a special responsibility to do your part to keep our community safe and healthy as we continue to encounter the COVID-19 pandemic. Make sure that you have met the vaccination requirement or received an exemption; that you wear masks when appropriate; to practice physical distancing of at least six feet, and to keep your hands washed or sanitized as much as possible. Adhering to these and other protocols will make sure that we can focus our time on preparing you for your future, not addressing health concerns. As dean of students, I look forward to supporting each of you as you become the man you were meant to be. Welcome to the House and welcome home. Sincerely, Kevin Booker Vice President for Student Services and Dean of the College

THEY SET GOALS. Goals keep students focused on the future. Goals help students decide on what’s important and what’s not. If you have a vision of where you want to go, you’re more likely to get there. Students with goals find it easier to say no to irresponsible behaviors because they are saying yes to their vision of the future.

THEY PLAN THEIR TIME. Responsible people meet their obligations, whether it’s turning in a paper on the day it’s due or having a report on the boss’s desk when it’s needed. It takes planning. (If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.) Use a digital or big calendar to help organize your time.Write down all your commitments and use the calendar to plan time for homework and study each day.

THEY STUDY EVERY DAY. Responsible students set aside time for homework or studying every day. If there is no homework that day, review your class notes or research additional material in preparation for an upcoming exam. READ! READ! READ!

THEY HAVE THE TOOLS THEY NEED. A carpenter wouldn’t think of showing up without a hammer. A nurse always has a stethoscope. A responsible student is always properly prepared for class.

THEY TAKE NOTES IN CLASS. Teachers will almost always spell out what they think is important. Taking notes while the teacher is talking is a MUST.

THEY KEEP THEIR COMMITMENTS. Responsible people honor their commitments. They succeed in school by doing their assignments well and on time, and they do

7 Habits of Highly Responsible Students 12

their share of group projects. Set realistic and attainable commitments to yourself and others and feel the satisfaction that comes from meeting those commitments.

THEY GET READY AHEAD OF TIME. Some students start out every morning with a crisis. Yes things happen! But responsible students have learned that being late, or being early, is not something that simply happens; it is a choice they make. Take five or 10 minutes before bedtime to get ready for the next day. Pack the bag appropriately. Lay out clothes. SET YOUR ALARM! You will soon see that those few minutes will make the mornings easier and help get you to class on time, ready to learn.

Dear Old Morehouse by J.O.B. Moseley ’1929

Dear old Morehouse, dear old Morehouse, We have pledged our lives to thee; And we’ll ever, yea forever Give ourselves in loyalty. True forever, true forever, To old Morehouse may we be; So to bind each son the other Into ties more brotherly. Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, Make us steadfast, honest, true, To old Morehouse, and her ideals, And in all things that we do.
