1. Personal Learning Goals 1. I will learn about the commodities industry through a company that is fastly growing and expects to continue this trend. 2. I will learn the day-to-day tasks of a commodities trading company and how they leverage the values of the company to better serve their customers. 3. I will learn about human resources and what their responsibilities are to better serve the employees of Lansing. 4. I will learn how to schedule meetings and coordinate with employees in different departments of the company. 5. I will learn to be accepting of constructive criticism from my superiors so that I can hone and build upon my existing communication skills. 6. I will learn to express myself as a young professional when I am working with the CEO, executives, merchandisers and other employees of the company so that I can further define my professional persona. 7. I strive to be an active participant in meetings and give useful input when asked about projects. 8. I strive to be a better active listener. 9. I will learn how people work and get along in a relationship oriented company. 10. I will build my professional network because I never know when I may run across one of them in the future when I am looking for job.
2. Personal Vision I strive to be an open minded individual that lights a fire for agriculture and God to everyone around me by being an informed agriculturalist, a leader and an honest adult. I will achieve this goal by completing my undergraduate degree in Agricultural Education, Communications and Technology with a concentration in Communication and either further my education or become a full-time employee in an agricultural organization. 3. Responsibilities and Roles for Internship Throughout the nine weeks of my internship, my responsibilities included:
Plan and create a recruitment video to highlight Lansing’s Merchandiser in Training (MIT) program Develop a university campus ambassador program Gather research for recruitment at Lansing’s four core recruitment universities
Recruitment Video While planning the recruitment video, I served as the main contact with Digital Lagoon, the video company Lansing hired to edit and gather footage for the video. I developed the storyline, questions, and content of the video. After getting names from the HR Coordinator Melinda Lebofsky, I contacted each employee and coordinated with them to get them ready for their interviews. Whenever Digital Lagoon was on site gathering footage, I organized the interview schedule, asked interview questions, and met the employees to take them to their interview location. After all of the video footage was taken, I coordinated with the videographer and editor to decide which parts of the interview would be used and which parts to cut. I also watched the draft of the video and determined if it matched the goal of the company, which is to recruit new MITs. Campus Ambassador Program Lansing is looking for a way to stay connected with potential talent when they are not on campus for career fairs. One way of doing this is by establishing a campus ambassador program at their core recruitment universities. The establishment of such a program would help maintain their relationships with students and professors on campus and also build awareness of the opportunities Lansing presents to college graduates that are interested in merchandising. My part in this was researching other successful ambassador programs and putting ideas together for Lansing. I created an application with basic requirements, incentives, responsibilities, Prezi presentation, evaluation methods, and researched giveaway items. I then put the information I developed and researched into a proposal Powerpoint and a proposal in Word. Also, I created web and poster flyers for Lansing to post or take to career fairs announcing the program. This program will probably not be enacted immediately, but within a couple years the Talent Acquisition Manager hopes to implement my plan for an ambassador program. Research on Recruitment One of Lansing’s recruitment practices is to sponsor events and clubs at universities. I contacted the Agricultural Business/Economics department at University of Arkansas, Kansas State University, University of Missouri, and Iowa State University to see if their clubs would be interested in Lansing donating/sponsoring club events. Throughout my internship, I had weekly meetings with my supervisor, Jessica Johnson. At these meetings we discussed what I was doing, what I found, and what I should be doing differently. Outside of these meetings, I worked independently with little supervision and managed my own time and projects. I also met with Melinda Lebofsky often. She was the HR Director and had the final say on my projects.

4. Reflection Week 1 (June 1-5) The first week of my internship was filled with getting acclimated to the company’s culture and office work style. My first morning I sat in on the Merchandiser in Training (MIT) course to learn about the company history, benefits and culture. This was good for me because it taught me about the company and how it is ran. I also met the new MITs, who started at Lansing the same time I did. After lunch, I was taken to my work desk. I had a double screen computer set up and an office phone. I also filled out a lot of paperwork my first day so I could get paid. Jodi Mitchell, human resources coordinator, gave me a tour of the offices so I knew who worked where and so forth. I sat across from Jodi in the office and we became good friends, often going to lunch together or happy hour after work. After the first day of getting used to the office, I immediately began my research for the projects I would be working on. I searched for videos that captured the culture of companies, because originally that is the kind of video I was supposed to produce. I brainstormed and developed a storyboard for the video and wrote down the types of clips that should be captured. I also researched campus ambassador programs to see what incentives other companies were offering to college students. I researched mobile advertising campaigns because the Talent Acquisition Manager was thinking of implementing mobile advertising as a recruitment strategy. I also provided website recommendations for the company’s outdated website. Even in the first week of my internship I was shocked that I was using skills I learned in classes from my previous semesters at the U of A, especially campaigns. I knew the type of information to research for the campus ambassador program and mobile advertising because of the research that I performed in my campaigns class. I also knew how to develop a storyboard for the video because of the work I have done in the ELL and topics I learned about video production in my broadcast and ag communications classes. This is the first time I really felt like the things I learned in class were being implemented in real life. It was awesome! Week 2 (June 8-12) My second week at Lansing went smoothly since I was getting used to the office life. I reported to Jessica Johnson throughout the duration of my internship. We had meetings scheduled every Monday where we discussed my responsibilities, what I had found through my research and things I should be doing differently. After meeting with Jessica I got busy on my assignments. I continued to research ambassador programs and mobile advertising. I also sought out sponsorship opportunities at Lansing’s four core recruitment campuses, the U of A being one of them. I emailed the agricultural business and economics department at each school to see what kind of opportunities were available for Lansing to sponsor to build the company’s awareness on campuses. During this week I experimented with mobile app websites and began creating an app for Lansing to direct students to their Talent Network when they are recruiting at universities. During my second week we decided my special project for the company would be re-designing and creating the employee newsletter. I was super excited that this was my special project because creating publications and layouts is my favorite! So of course, I immediately got started writing articles and thinking of topics to be covered in the newsletter. On Friday, I met with the video company, Digital Lagoon, that would be creating our recruitment video and had a conference call with Aarki, which is a mobile advertising platform that creates and manages mobile campaigns. Both of these meetings I set up and directed.

Week 3 (June 15-19) By my third week I learned to manage my own time and continued to work independently on my assignments. I continued to edit the storyboard for the video, which this week was decided needed to be focused on MIT recruitment. I thought of questions to use for interviews and tweaked the storyline. In between my work on the recruitment video, I started to design a brochure about the campus ambassador program, remade Lansing’s logos, began to creat PowerPoints to be used to present the material I found to the Executive Committee and began the newsletter layout. One day I met with Scott Wernimont, the director of business development, to discuss topics I would use as the main article in the newsletter. One of the things I enjoyed most about Lansing is that the relationships formed at work extend into employees personal lives. Employees are friends with each other and hang out after work and on the weekends. Because of the relationships formed, Lansing employees enjoy social events hosted by the company every month. The event for June was the Big Slick Event, which was created by famous actors to raise money that is donated to Kansas City’s Mercy Children’s Hospital. Lansing bought Royals game tickets for anyone in the company that wanted to go. I signed up because I did not know if I would go to a Royals game otherwise. It was fun and so nice to see everyone at work out having a good time together outside of the office. Week 4 (June 22-26) Geesh! Time was flying by, before I knew it I was almost half-way done with my internship! During week 4, Jessica and I met with Digital Lagoon again to discuss the final details of the video and go over Digital Lagoon’s proposal and pricing. I also met with Jessica and Melinda to go over the storyboard and finalize the questions and people that we would interview so I could begin to contact them to check their availability. I also listened to music to pick out songs to use in the video. This week I interviewed Scott McWilliams, who is in charge of the MIT short course, and asked him questions about the program for one of the newsletter stories. All the while I continued making edits to the ambassador program and newsletter. Week 5 (June 29-July 3) My fifth week at Lansing was a short week because of the holiday. Nonetheless, I continued to get things ready for the interviews that would happen during week 6. I corresponded with the employees being interviewed so that if they had any questions I could answer them and I finalized the interview questions so the interviewees could practice ahead of time. I also continued to edit the newsletter. Once again, I was surprised at the relationships within the company. I was invited to a Bunco party at Jodi’s house with other Lansing employees. I had never played Bunco before but it was so much fun just to visit and get to know the other ladies at Lansing. Since I am only at Lansing for a short time, I was glad to be treated like a regular employee. But that is what made my experience there so wonderful and encouraged me to do the best job I could everyday. Week 6 (July 6-10) This was the week that tested my abilities in the workplace! The video company was there on Tuesday to gather B-roll footage. Tuesday morning I met with all of the employees being interviewed to have a rundown of the interview process and to answer any of their questions. When Wednesday rolled around, the videoing began with the executive meeting at 8 am, followed by interviews starting at 8:15 am then every 45 minutes after was another interview. I asked questions but also got the interviewees ready to go. At one point in the day I had to meet with one of the merchandisers about a piece I wrote for the newsletter. This week taught me what it was like to work with the big employees (CEO and VP) and showed me how to be professional in a stressful setting where a lot was riding on my shoulders. I was in charge of the video project and questions were directed to me. I never would have thought I would have that much charge and responsibility in my name for an internship. But I know it has made me a better professional.
Marley Internship Portfolio | 4
Week 7 (July 13-17) I was out of the office at the ALE Conference in Washington D.C. with Dr. Rucker and Dr. Graham presenting a poster. While I was on the plane, I looked through the interview transcripts and highlighted the parts that I thought would make good sound bites. Week 8 (July 20-24) As soon as I returned from D.C. I immediately dove back into my work. I went through the interviews with Jessica to decide which pieces to send to the editor. Within a day or two he sent me back a draft with all of the clips that we selected, at which point I went back through the video and cut it from 15 minutes down to about seven minutes in length. I already knew from making videos for the ELL that it was easy to make a video long, but to cut it down and still have all the information you want to come across is more difficult. During this time I also created a blooper reel from the interview clips. The employees at Lansing are always laughing and having a good time so I thought it would be fun for them to see that everyone had difficulties and were uncomfortable being interviewed. I even put a little tune to it that made it upbeat and even funnier! For the majority of my internship I got out of typical intern duties. But during week 8, I spent an entire day filing paperwork. I am pretty sure Lansing had not filed anything for about a year! I spent all day pulling out files and adding in paperwork. Then some of the files were not up to date! So for those, I had to pull out the health insurance papers and put those into a red folder in each file. Let’s just say I got my fill of filing that day and quickly realized I was not missing out on anything before! This week was also the week that my newsletter became finalized and sent out to all of the employees! All of my time and effort finally paid off and I was so excited! A lot of the employees told me I did a good job and they really liked the new look of the newsletter. Even one of the executives personally told me I did a good job. It was so cool to see my work be implemented and used while I was still at Lansing. Every week there was an HR department meeting and I got to participate! This meeting was a big different than the rest. This was the meeting where HR Director Melinda Lebofsky told us that she was leaving Lansing for an offer she got from another company that she could not refuse. I was very sad to hear this because Melinda is who hired me for my internship and I look up to her a lot as a role model in the work place. Outside of work, Lansing sponsored a dinner through AFA for interns in Kansas City to network. On Wednesday, I traveled to Jack Stack barbecue restaurant to meet other interns in the area. Jessica also went and the CEO of AFA was there and sat by me for dinner. I was the only intern there that had been to the AFA Leaders Conference so Russ Weathers and I had plenty to talk about. Week 9 (July 27-31) You know that old saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” That is the perfect way to sum up my time at Lansing. My final week in Overland Park was bittersweet as I created cards with the QR code to Lansing’s Talent Network to take to career fairs. I also spent this time organizing all of my files to leave for Jessica. I even got to see the rough draft of the video to approve it. I printed out the materials that I have worked on throughout the summer to leave for Jessica when I am gone. At the start of the summer I was nervous about coming to Lansing because I did not have a definite set of responsibilities laid out. But I could not have been more blessed getting hired as the HR intern at such an amazing company that still has huge potential and growth in the future. Everything that I have done here has matched my career interests and helped me develop my skills as a professional.

Purpose The purpose of the video is to capture the culture of Lansing Trade Group by interviewing employees from different sectors of the company (human resources, merchandisers, accountants, CEO). The video will focus on the merchandisers because it will be shown to potential employees in attempt to recruit new MITs. The video will be linked on the website and the mobile app for easy sharing capabilities among the target audience. The goal will be to showcase the various job opportunities that are available at Lansing. It isn’t just the merchant merchandisers that make up the company. There are accountants, human resources staff, secretaries, IT, etc.. It takes more than one person to make Lansing successful, so that is what needs to be shown. Target Audience The primary audience the video is being made for are college students majoring in agricultural economics, business administration or finances. These students are who Lansing is looking to recruit as new hires for the MIT program. Lansing believes that their best merchandisers happen when they are trained by the company with no prior experience as merchants in the industry. That is why Lansing targets college students on the verge of graduating. The secondary audience would be employees at competing companies or people that are interested in merchandising, trading or commodities. Themes 1. Relationship Oriented 2. Values of Lansing 3. Entrepreneurial company (P&L, risk takers, fast paced, lots of change, power to make decisions, flexibility) 4. Environment (fast paced, community involvement, family) 5. Experience of a merchandiser 6. Employee = customer (equal importance) 7. Work to better each other, not against each other 8. Company is growing 9. Types of people sought for employment 10. 6. Special Internship Project After much thought and consideration, my supervisors and I decided that my special internship project would be the Lansing employee newsletter. In the past, Melinda gathered content for the newsletter then sent it to their graphic designer to put into a PDF to post online and share with their employees. Whenever I reviewed the previous newsletters, I had noticed that they did not always use the highest quality photos and were, quite frankly, boring to look at. This left me plenty of opportunity to use my creativity in design! Immediately after getting the “go ahead”, I got started by jotting down ideas of content and researched newsletter template designs. I began scheduling appointments with people within the company to interview for articles and started creating a header for the front page. I often met with Melinda, who directed me in the right direction to find people to interview. We went through my ideas of stories and what I had come up with so far so I could work on the content. I remember her saying during one of our meetings, “I just love the way your brain works!” I had a lot of support and help along the way between Melinda and the people whom I interviewed to keep me moving in the right direction. As with any project, I did run into some bumps along the way. Whenever I emailed or called the merchandisers I often did not get a reply. However, I am used to that from working in the ELL because there are many times I struggled getting in contact with my clients there, too. Thankfully, Melinda is known among the employees and she helped me get ahold of the people I needed. If that did not work, then Melinda would email them the story I was working on so that they would send back their edits and comments. It was hard writing some of the stories because I am new to the merchandising industry and do not know much about it. But with the help and guidance of my supervisors and other employees, I quickly learned and was able to complete my project. After getting all of the content written and the layout finished, I sent the finalized newsletter to Melinda and she read over it and gave me edits to make. Then, it was sent to the CEO and one of the executive vice presidents to approve. The executive vice president told me when he met me with his edits that I did a good job and he really liked the colors and design. After I made the final corrections, it was ready to send to the entire organization! After its publication, I did notice one thing that was off - you can see where I pieced together the logo on the front page of the newsletter when the transparency was dropped. I do not know how to fix that because on the other pages it is fine. So when you view the newsletter, you will be able to see that on the front page. I received many emails from employees after it was sent out that I did a good job and they enjoyed the new look. Hearing positive feedback from the people I worked with and became friends with all summer made all of my hard work and struggles throughout the process worth it. I could not be happier that I was able to see the execution the work during my internship. The newsletter can be accessed at: http://lansingtradegroup.com/3dissue/issue3/index.html

Comments: Morgan did a great job with her major project of creating a story board for a recruitment video and coordinating the production and completed the project by the deadline. She was also able to assist with several other projects including creating an employee newsletter, putting together an outline for a campus ambassador program, researching mobile app advertising options and updating a few power points including a new employee overview and new employee orientation. Morgan was very receptive to feedback and utilized that feedback to improve. My only constructive feedback is that I had asked Morgan to come up with a project of her own a) that would add value to her portfolio and own learning desires and b) add value to the organization. There were a few time periods where she had down time due to waiting on vendor responses that she could have utilized to work on such a project. However, that being said, during those down times, Morgan was very willing to help out in other capacities (typically administrative) such as copying and filing.

10. Statement of Work Style and Philosophy This internship has taught me a lot about myself as a professional. I learned that I am the most effective when I feel the work I am doing makes a difference. I like to see what I am doing come together, so creative design is what motivates me to work long days. I am also effective when I believe that I am in a trusting environment with my co-workers and supervisors because it makes me more relaxed while working. Even though I already knew that I am capable of working alone or on a team, because I am a task-oriented leader I enjoy working alone because there are less distractions and I have the autonomy to make my decisions on what I am doing. I am capable of figuring out a job on my own. I need little direction to get started on my responsibilities. This summer I was considered the “expert on videos and creativity because those are my strengths, where the other ladies in HR do not know about these things, so I made the important decisions that affected the outcome of my projects. Of course I prefer when I get more direction for a task because then I do not have to go back and re-do my work if I stray the wrong direction. When my core values align with the company I am working for, I feel much more motivated to come to work, and I enjoy my day. The value of networking cannot be overlooked. Even though networking is not my favorite activity to participate in, I found a new appreciation for making connections in the professional field. The people I met at Lansing over the summer may be my future co-workers or boss at a different company.
