STUDIO: IARC 375- Experimentation and Innovation (Computational Compositions)

When experimenting with form, it is always important to ﬁnd where the connection between each part lies. For my project, I chose to trial various 3D printed explorations of both simple and more complex forms that have the commonality of uniting together. The art coming from these forms is the small sliver that connects these multiple pieces together seen through my work. I have brought these forms into my space by using them as wall and display conditions. The conditions act as a maze to ensure each part of the space is reached, allowing for endless circulation paths and posibilities within.

I have created a Dance Boutique and Studio that ﬁnds the latest in dance styles and trends. The intention is to attract the maximum number of customers into the space by using the art of coalescence. Inside, there are concentrations of similar shops that all form into one boutique. These segments include various parts of dance retail - shoes, clothing, jewelry, accessories, etc. Although these forms and store segments are separate entities, they all come together to create a sense of community, just as the art of dance does. In dance, separate movements in choreography must ﬂow together and contribute to the whole of the piece. This is also the objective of my space.

3d prints and models

Three-dimensional models were created to inspire the space. The models were developed by using software such as rhino and grasshopper and sent to the printers to be physically formed. As a class, we learned to understand the way the printers worked and created our pieces which stemmed from diﬀerent geometries. The additive process of the printers functioned by laying down thin layers of material in the form of plastic, which become fused together. Layer after layer, the desired piece was ﬁnally printed. I also began experimenting with plaster, which acted as a protective/decorative coating for our prints.

As I created more pieces, I noticed an active similarity between them: the art of connection. I saw as one geometry ended on the print, another started upon the following print. This created a relationship between the two printed geometries. From then on, I purposely continued to create both simple and complex geometries that kept a connection between the two. This began to start inspiring my overall concept - coalescence.

FLOOR PLANS AND SECTIONS

The symmetrical form of the building - both inside and outside, helps shape the programs and activities happening throughout the space. The various wall partitions placed inside the space inspired by my three-dimensional prints help an individual navigate through level one. In the process, I followed a study that considered the pattern of how an individual walks around a space, which is typically in a zig-zag pattern. Pre-exisiting stores have a forced layout that allows for every retail element to be seen, and that is what I portrayed by using these curved wall partitions.

The symmetrical form continues to shape the programs and activities on level two of the space. This level heavily relies on the experience and connection that lies within dance. The studio exhibits itself as a comfortable and encouraging space where dancers can develop their skills and build conﬁdence. Individuals can watch across the hall from the lounge room to immerse in this experience. The four walkways act as a means for controlled circulation around the space, giving the individual various possibilities and paths to travel throughout.

A client’s role is at the core of any interior architectural and design process. Everything the designer does is to achieve the vision established by each client- their involvment is valuable and crucial. For this project, I was provided a real-life client, Mitchell, by my professor and worked closely with him throughout the duration of the Spring semester. During this time, I designed a space to ﬁt his needs which involved both a space to live and work on his projects as a hand weaver. The space given was around 1,000 sq. ft, so ﬁtting all of his wants and needs inside were a part of the challenge.

In addition to working with Mitchell, I aquired significant knowledge behind floor loom weaving and the art and history behind it. I worked hands on with materials such as yarn, ribbon, and rope and used a weaving frame and warp to create a forms of textile art. I also studied many forms of nature that could be seen as woven. I finalized with a bee’s hive and worked to find a way to incorporate the design into the space.

Living Lyrics is centered around Mitchell and his ideal work environment. It is all about the art of weaving and how it incorporates more than just one of our five senses. Intense comfort can be found in white noise or music while taking part in a detailed task that is visual in nature. The positive effects of sound can be soothing and relaxing. Sound fills the gap silence creates - the audio and visual cues work together to support the task at hand.

Staging SOTHEBY’S REALTY 03

This summer, I was given the opportunity to intern for Sotheby’s International Realty and work alongside the main accredited staging professional (ACP) to stage luxurious houses. I worked with her very closely in preparing each and every home for the potential buyers. I gained professional real-world experience by working closely with our clients/homeowners to prepare for the selling of their home. During this job, I learned many skills that will transfer over into successful and professional habits. I became much more detail-oriented and realizing that every single detail matters - from accessories, to lighting, to color, and more. I learned how to become more adaptable. When a project throws a curve ball, one must know how to professionally handle that and come up with a succesful solution. Lastly, I became more curious. I found myself asking question after question and seeking knowledge about the latest styles and trends in the design and staging world. The next few sets of pages showcase three homes I staged with the ACP and display conceptual sketches I drew out to visually plan how each room would come together.
