Head Coach - Patrick Ross Patrick Ross, the winningest football coach in Lindenwood history, is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Lindenwood program in 2012. He is in his eleventh season overall as a collegiate head coach. Ross owns a career coaching record of 88-29 (.752), his teams have appeared in the NAIA Football Championship Series six times, and twice he has earned National Coach of the Year honors. In his first eight years in St. Charles, he has compiled a record of 74-22, won three HAAC championships, and advanced to the NAIA national playoffs five times, including a trip to the national championship game in 2009. He became the all-time leader in wins at Lindenwood in 2007, and his .771 winning percentage shatters the previous best mark for the program. While Lindenwood was at the NAIA level, Ross’ players won 10 All-American awards, including six first-team honors. Jeff Hynes was twice named the Rimington Award Winner as the best offensive center in the NAIA. Ross coached three HAAC Players of the Year with DeDe Dorsey winning the award in 2004 and Denodus O’Bryant winning back-toback awards in 2009 and 2010. Ross’ players were named first-team all-HAAC 37 times, 32 players were named second-team all-conference, and 27 received third-team honors. Ross did one of his best coaching jobs in 2011 as he led Lindenwood through its transition season as the program moves from the NAIA to the top NCAA Division II conference. The Lions went 8-3 and were the only second-year transition school to record a winning record. Lindenwood’s offense continued its high-scoring ways despite the tougher competition, and having a new quarterback and nearly a completely new offensive line. The Lions averaged over 40 points and 367.9 total yards a game. In 2010, the Lions went 9-2 overall in their final season of NAIA play, and finished second in the HAAC with a 9-1 mark. Lindenwood advanced to the NAIA Playoffs for the fourth straight season and fifth overall appearance in Ross’ tenure. The Lions had one of the best offenses in the entire country. Lindenwood possessed the No. 1 passing offense, the best passing efficiency, top offense yards per game, and second most points scored. In 2009, Ross led the Lions to their best season in program history as they advanced to the national championship game. The Lions went 10-0 during the regular season and won the program’s third HAAC Championship. Lindenwood hosted playoff games in the first and second rounds and then traveled to Helena, Montana, where they faced Carroll College. The Lions would beat the Saints and move onto the national championship against defending champions, Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls upended the Lions 25-22. For the second straight season in 2009 the Lions had one of the most prolific offenses in the country. The Lions averaged over 53 points a game which was tops in the country and broke the school record for points scored with 744. Lindenwood finished ranked second in the country when the final polls came out, which was the highest ranking the school has ever accomplished. In 2008, Ross led the Lions to within one play of reaching the national championship game. The Lions went 9-1 during the regular season and finished second in the HAAC. Lindenwood had one of the top offenses in the country in 2008, setting school Alma Mater - University of Puget Sound records with over 40 points and 460 yards of total offense a game. Family: Wife Stacey, Daughters, Peyton, Ross led one of the most amazing one-season turnarounds in college football Shaelene, Son, Caden history. The Lions went 11-0 in the regular season, tying for the same number of wins the team earned in the previous four years combined, and won their first HAAC Head Coaching Career: Reg. Conf. title. In 2007, Ross directed the Lions to another conference title and national playoff 2002 Ottawa 5-5 5-4 appearance. Behind another high scoring offense, Lindenwood won its first 10 games 2003 Ottawa* 9-2 9-0 and finished the regular season ranked ninth in the nation. 2004 Lindenwood* 11-1 10-0 Prior to coming to Lindenwood, Ross was the head coach at Ottawa (Kan.) for two seasons. He posted a record of 14-7 there, winning the 2003 KCAC title and 2005 Lindenwood 7-4 7-3 advancing to the national playoffs. Prior to his stint at Ottawa, Ross served as the 2006 Lindenwood 5-7 5-5 defensive coordinator for three years and an assistant for one at Kansas Wesleyan. 2007 Lindenwood* 10-2 9-1 Ross has had five Lindenwood players sign NFL contracts and numerous others 2008 Lindenwood* 11-2 9-1 have signed contracts with other professional leagues. Dorsey and Brian Schaefering 2009 Lindenwood* 13-1 10-0 have played in the NFL, while Zac Atterberry, Marcel Thompson, and Roren Thomas 2010 Lindenwood* 9-2 9-1 signed with NFL teams after their Lindenwood careers. Dorsey was a member of the 2011 Lindenwood 8-3 N/A 2007 Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts, and Derrick Ward, a former player for * NAIA Playoff Ross at Ottawa, won a Super Bowl ring in 2008 with the New York Giants.

Off. Coordinator/ Asst. Head Coach Craig Schuler Craig Schuler is entering his ninth season in 2012 with the Lindenwood football program. He has been on Patrick Ross’ staff since the first day of the Ross era. Schuler came to Lindenwood in 2004, and has been a major part of the program’s turnaround. In 2012, he will serve as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach, as well as being the team’s recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach. This season will be Schuler’s 24th coaching football. In that time, he has won eight conference championship rings, including three as a member of the Lindenwood staff, and coached in 18 NAIA national playoff games. Last season, Schuler helped Lindenwood go 8-3 during its transition season from the NAIA to NCAA Division II level. Over the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator, Schuler has led a Lindenwood offense that has been one of the highest scoring teams in the country at any level. The Lions’ offense has averaged 49.6 points per game over the past 36 games, and has broken numerous national and school records along the way. The 2009 Lions averaged over 53 points per contest, and set a school record in points scored with 744. That year also saw the Lions’ offense rack up the awards, with freshman tailback Denodus O’Bryant being named the MVP of the league. In 2010, Schuler worked with another record-setting offensive unit, one which racked up 8.9 yards per play and 551 yards per game. The Lions continued their remarkable three-year run on offense in 2011, averaging 40.3 points per game against one of the toughest schedules faced by any Division II team in the nation. The Lions scored 60 touchdowns in 2011, giving them 140 trips to the end zone in their last 22 games. Since Schuler arrived at Lindenwood, the Lions have posted a record of 74-22, won three HAAC championships, and advanced to the NAIA Football Championship Series five times. Prior stops on the coaching trail for Schuler include 11 years at Benedictine (Kan.) and two at Avila (Mo.). He has served as a coordinator on both sides of the ball while coaching in the HAAC, and was a high school head coach in the Southern California Division I ranks. Schuler and his wife, Alison, have two daughters, Nikki and Katie.

today's game lindenwood lions vs. glenville state pioneers september 21, 2012 The Lindenwood football team continues a four-game homestand tonight when it welcomes Glenville State to Hunter Stadium for a Friday Night Lights version of Lions football. Lindenwood will be playing on Friday for the first time in program history and will be taking on the Pioneers out of Glenville, West Virginia. Lindenwood had a short week to prepare for Glenville State and also less time to get last week’s contest out of its mind. In a showdown that the Lions had circled on their calendar all off-season, Lindenwood came up just short by a 35-28 score against Central Missouri. Lindenwood overcome early adversity and tied the game early in the fourth quarter. The Mules showed why they are considered one of the top-five teams in the MIAA by scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just over three minutes remaining in the game. The Lions will have to get over the disappointment of that loss quickly as a dangerous Glenville State squad comes to St. Charles tonight. The Pioneers, who compete in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, are just 1-2 on the season, but one loss was a 10-point road defeat at Carson-Newman, a program receiving votes in the NCAA Division II national poll, and the other was to NCAA Division I UTChattanooga. The scoreboard could get a lot of work tonight as the Lions enter play tonight averaging 37.3 points a game, compared to a 43.5 point average for the Pioneers against NCAA Division II competition. Lindenwood’s offense starts with quarterback Ben Gomez who enters tonight’s game with eight touchdown passes and 300.7 passing yards a game. Glenville State counters with Darold Hughes who also has eight touchdown passes and is averaging just over 200 passing yards a game. A pair of explosive players exists in each team’s backfield. The Lions’ Denodus O’Bryant is averaging 81.7 rushing yards a game and collects another 31 yards a game through the air. He has four touchdowns on the season, including a kickoff return last weekend that was unofficially the longest in school history. The NCAA statistics counted it as a 100-yard kickoff return, but O’Bryant caught the kickoff eight yards deep in the endzone before running through Central Missouri’s coverage for a touchdown. The Pioneers’ Rahmann Lee averages just under 100 yards a game rushing and has scored twice this year.

At the wide receiver position, both teams are very deep. Lindenwood’s trio of Andrew Helmick, Matt Angell, and Alex Robinson have caught 38 passes for 604 yards and six touchdowns. Glenville State’s trio of Orlandus Harris, Robert Jiles, and Justin Feagin have caught 47 passes for 536 yards and eight touchdowns. With both offensives having numerous skills players who can score anywhere on the field, the winner of tonight’s game will likely be the team with the top defense. Lindenwood is allowing 25.7 points a game on the season, while Glenville State is allowing 37.3 points. The Lions are fourth in the MIAA by allowing just 104.7 yards a game on the ground, while the Pioneers are allowing 272.0 rushing yards a game. Lindenwood’s defense starts up front where starters Malach Radigan, Sean Gracy, Joe Day, and Chaz Fulton have been causing trouble for other team’s all season. The defensive line, including backups Chris Floyd, Jon McComb, and Cody Reider, have 12 sacks and 18 tackles for loss on the season. The story of the season at the linebacker position has been Connor Harris. The true freshman has led the team in tackles all three contests and he has 26 on the season. When Glenville State passes tonight, it will likely be very aware of Pierre Desir’s location. The cornerback has three interceptions the last two weeks, including one that he has returned for a touchdown. Glenville State’s Terry Reese leads the Pioneers on the season with 29 tackles from his free safety spot, one more than linebacker James Johnson. Reese also has the team’s lone interception and Johnson has a forced fumble on the year. Gary Henderson and James Washington both have two sacks on the year and are the leaders up front for Glenville State. Another key statistic to watch tonight is turnovers. Lindenwood fumbled the ball four times last week and, although it lost just one, the other three directly led to the Lions giving up the ball in the next few plays after they lost yards on the fumble. The Lions have eight turnovers in their first three games and have a -1 turnover margin. Glenville State has only turned the ball over four times, but it has only forced two turnovers. Lindenwood fans, and the rest of the MIAA, will be interested to watch tonight how the Lions bounce back after last week’s loss. If there is any hangover, the Pioneers will likely leave St. Charles with the victory. A strong performance by Lindenwood though will show the strong character of this team and will be a positive step for the program’s future success in the MIAA.

Wideouts Are Dangerous The Lindenwood Lions football team has had great offensive success over the last few years, and as always, it looks to the future for continued success. Much of the Lions offensive prowess is generated through its extremely deep receiver corps, which is a mix of experience and youthfulness. The Lions wide receiver depth chart consists of seniors Andrew Helmick, Matt Angell, and Tim Celestine, juniors Blake Arnette and Donnie Jennert, sophomores Alex Robinson and Chase Stewart, and freshmen Sam Sealer, Jordan Gater, Jacob McDermott, Travis Mitchell, Jaron Alexander, and Blake Horne. “With the depth we have at the wide receiver spot we are in a great position,” said head coach Patrick Ross. “We have experience with Andrew Helmick and Matt Angell and we have a lot of youth on this team.” Helmick has made quite a name for himself on the gridiron for the Lions and will end his career as one of the top wide receivers in school history. He already ranks in the top-10 in career receptions (6th), career receiving yards (4th), touchdown receptions (t-2nd), and points (8th). He currently has 101 receptions for 1,665 receiving yards and 21 receiving touchdowns. He is on pace to set the school’s career record in all three of those categories. Helmick’s season has been productive so far as he has 14 receptions for 200 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. Those numbers are a continuation of the 2011 campaign when he had one of the best seasons at Lindenwood for a receiver. He set the school season record with 81.9 receiving yards a game, and tied the school records with 12 receiving touchdowns and four 100-yard receiving games. Another fan favorite is senior wide receiver Matt Angell, who is back at wide-out this season after redshirting last year due to an injury. He has caught a touchdown pass in every game this year and had a career-best game against Southwest Baptist in week two of the season with five receptions for 127 receiving yards. In Angell’s first three seasons with the Lions, he caught 44 passes for 754 yards and six touchdowns. Robinson leads the team this year with 208 receiving yards and is

third with 11 receptions. In his freshman campaign in 2011, he started all 11 games and was the team’s number two receiver. Robinson recorded 412 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 34 receptions. He was also the team’s favorite target on third and fourth-down plays. “We are in an exciting position this season with lots of unproven, but very talented guys,” said Ross in reference to wide receivers like Sam Sealer, Jordan Gater, and Jaron Alexander. All three are expected to make big contributions to the Lions offense sooner than later. “We have great youth on this team, with a lot of guys having three or four years to go,” said Ross. Sealer had a standout high school career in the Kansas City area. He was selected first-team all-state during his senior season at the wide receiver position. Sealer was also a two-time first-team all-conference selection, second-team all-Metro selection, and won the Otis Taylor Award given to the top receiver in the Kansas City metro area. Gater, a freshman out of Avilla, Ind. also had an impressive high school career as he was selected first-team all-state and first-team allNortheast Indiana. Gater caught 50 passes for 1,072 yards and scored 14 career touchdowns in high school. He showed his explosiveness in the Lincoln contest with a 42-yard play that set up the touchdown that put the Lions ahead for good. One of the brightest stars for Lindenwood over the next four years could be true freshman Jaron Alexander. Alexander is another receiver from the Kansas City area and he was a finalist for the Otis Taylor Award. The first-team all-state and two-time first-team all-conference performer collected 1,177 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns last year. It didn’t take him long to make an impact at this level, catching five passes for 68 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut versus Lincoln. “All of our receivers are very football-smart kids,” said offensive coordinator Craig Schuler. “They know how to read schemes very well and understand our block first, receiver second mentality.” With its vast depth at the wide receiver position, the Lions football program looks to continue its explosive offensive productivity now that it has moved up to the NCAA Division II level and began competition this year in the MIAA.

Field Hockey Looks to Improve The Lindenwood women’s field hockey team is looking to turn a new leaf in its 2012 season. The Lady Lions are coming off a 2-13 record in 2011, their first year of official NCAA competition. Lindenwood’s 2012 schedule is full of tests for the Lady Lions, including games against the top programs in Division II and two matches against Division I programs. Lindenwood has already made strides this season, matching last year’s win total and having a 2-4 record to start the season. “Our key goal this year was to move the program forward,” said head coach Sarah JJohnson. “We want to have a record above .500 and show that we can compete with the ranked teams.” Part of moving forward is having a new identity this year after losing five seniors from its 2011 roster. The new identity consists of 12 newcomers including 10 freshmen and two transfers. The 2012 field hockey roster also returns eight players this year, four of which are seniors. The new youthful identity will demand more from its newcomers as the team moves forward. “The returners and freshmen all share the same drive to push this team to the next level,” noted Johnson. “One of our themes this year is accountability: holding ourselves and our team accountable and that is what will help us

reach our goals.” One of those newcomers is freshman goaltender Victoria Gil. Gil has started in all six matches for the Lady Lions this season and recorded her first Lindenwood shutout in a 6-0 victory versus Mercy College on September 8. “College hockey is a big step from high school,” said Gil. “I just want to be beneficial to the team in any way I can while stepping my own game up to a new level.” Another key newcomer is junior Kristi O’Connor. O’Connor comes from Missouri State University and leads the team with five goals for 10 points. “As a transfer, I wanted to bring my experience from a Division I field hockey program, leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game,” said O’Connor. “I’m excited to get deeper in the season and put our hard work into play. We are ready for the next step into Division II.” A key element to Lindenwood’s progression lies in the guidance of its returners and coaching staff. “This year’s team is clearly much younger than last year’s but the tone was set from the get go that we will be a competitive force in Division II,” added Johnson. “Everyone wants to win and is willing to put in the time and commitment to get there.”

Around Campus The Lindenwood men’s soccer team is the hottest team on campus. The Lions finished last week with a record of 2-0, and have now won four games in a row. Lindenwood started the week with a 3-2 win over Southwest Baptist. The win was the first MIAA win for the program, and to close out the week the Lions shut out Ouachita Baptist 1-0 at home. Freshman goalie Fermin Hughes has already recorded three shutouts this season. In the team’s last four wins the defense has surrendered just three goals. Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action this past weekend. The Lady Lions had their best finish of the season. The team came in fifth place and was led by Tanya Chibanda who won the college division 5k. She finished with a time of 18:41. The men’s team finished in 16th place and was led by Ben McGraw who placed 22nd. The men’s golf team played in a pair of tournaments this past weekend. The Lions shot 604 as a team at the Pitt State Invitational. Lindenwood led the tournament in scoring on day two, turning in the low team score of 292. Greg MacAulay carded a four-under 68 in round two, followed by a 74 by Erik

MacAuley shot seven-under for two rounds and placed fourth overall. Isacsson finished the tournament in 13th place while Matt Loewen and Oscar Isacsson finished in 24th place. The women’s soccer team had a busy last week. The Lady Lions finished the week with a 1-2 record. The week started with a 3-0 win over Maryville. Senior Courtney Bresnahan recorded her first career hat trick against the Saints. In the final two games of the week, Lindenwood played its first two MIAA games. The Lady Lions fell 3-2 to Northwest Missouri State and 2-1 against Missouri Western in overtime.

Harlen C. Hunter Stadium

Hunter Stadium is one of the busiest places on campus throughout the year. It is the home for Lindenwood football, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and both men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. The stadium was built in 1976 by the St. Louis football Cardinals as a place to hold their training camp. In 1988, the stadium was renovated and a new artificial turf was installed. Eleven years later in 1999, Hunter Stadium debuted a new turf called Astro Play. After the 2004 season, Hunter Stadium underwent its biggest renovation. The stadium was completely renovated, including end zone seating and a brand new two-story press box. In 2009, the playing surface at the facility was replaced with Enviroturf. The facility has hosted NAIA football playoff games in 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010, and the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championships in 2001 and 2002. The last three seasons the St. Louis Rams held training camp scrimmages at Hunter Stadium. All three games drew over 5,000 specators. During the NFL Lockout in 2011, several St. Louis Rams players chose Lindenwood for offseason training. The stadium is named after Dr. Harlen C. Hunter, who founded the St. Louis Orthopedic Sports Medicine Clinic in Chesterfield in 1979, the first clinic of its kind in the St. Louis area. Hunter was the key to the upgrades of the playing surface in 1988.

The New Home of Lindenwood Athletics The Lindenwood University Student-Athlete Center is a 43,450-square-foot athletic building with an academic support center, new locker rooms for football and other Hunter Stadium sports, coaches’ offices, and a Hall of Fame Room. The building opens in early September. The ground floor of the building will house home and visitor locker rooms and athletic training facilities. The nearly 3,000-square-foot academic success center is on the second floor, along with locker rooms for men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and field hockey. The third floor overlooks the bleachers and the scoreboard, and consists of coaches’ offices, a Hall of Fame Room, and meeting rooms.

ABOUT LINDENWOOD With her husband, Major George Sibley, pioneer educator Mary Sibley founded Lindenwood as a school for young women in 1827. Lindenwood was committed to combining professional issues with academic pursuits, the social with the intellectual, and the spiritual with the physical. In short, Mary Sibley brought holistic higher education to the American frontier. Lindenwood became a Presbyterian college in 1853 and still maintains a historical relationship with the Presbyterian Church. In 1918, Lindenwood became a four-year college, and in 1969, Lindenwood attempted to strengthen its financial base by becoming co-ed. The school altered its name in 1974. The Lindenwood Colleges referred to the school’s individual operations for men and women and also to its accelerated evening program, The Lindenwood College for Individualized Education, and its graduate programs. During the ‘70s and ‘80s, the school struggled with a changing economy and accumulated substantial indebtedness. Enrollments began to decline, and by the spring of 1989, the number of day

students had dropped below 1,000. As well, institutional change during those decades had led to some loss of clarity of mission. In view of these fiscal and cultural challenges, the Board of Directors resolved to “refound” the school by returning to the fundamental precepts of individualized, holistic, values-oriented higher education that combines the practical with the academic. A president experienced in financial management and organizational revitalization was hired to lead the whole Lindenwood community in its collective renewal initiative. The result was a period of rapid growth and innovation that enabled the College to become the higher-education leader that it is today. At the height of its revival, Lindenwood College became Lindenwood University in 1997. Enrollment burgeoned, and new construction arrived in late 1997 with the Hyland Performance Arena. By 1998-99, the annual enrollment approached 9,500, the faculty was growing, and the school balanced its budgets and increased revenues. In 2000, Lindenwood dedicated the first of eight new residence halls to be constructed over the next decade—the first such construction in more than 30 years. In 2002, Lindenwood built the beautiful new Spellmann Campus Center. The 136,000-square-foot J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts opened in 2008. The growth has not slowed. Additional construction has included expansion and renovation of Harmon Hall, now the home of the Lindenwood University School of Business and Entrepreneurship, and the 120,000-square-foot Evans Commons opened to great fanfare in 2011. A new athletics building is being added in 2012 adjacent to Harlen Hunter Stadium, corresponding with Lindenwood’s transition to the NCAA, Division II. Academically, Lindenwood has grown as well with extension of its longstanding general accreditation, the additional of numerous specialized accreditations for individual programs, and the addition of a number of degree programs, including the school’s first doctoral degrees in the School of Education. Mary Sibley ran a tightly managed school with a resourceful spirit and a clear purpose. She would have been proud of today’s Lindenwood.
