Head Coach - Patrick Ross Patrick Ross, the winningest football coach in Lindenwood history, is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Lindenwood program in 2012. He is in his eleventh season overall as a collegiate head coach. Ross owns a career coaching record of 88-29 (.752), his teams have appeared in the NAIA Football Championship Series six times, and twice he has earned National Coach of the Year honors. In his first eight years in St. Charles, he has compiled a record of 74-22, won three HAAC championships, and advanced to the NAIA national playoffs five times, including a trip to the national championship game in 2009. He became the all-time leader in wins at Lindenwood in 2007, and his .771 winning percentage shatters the previous best mark for the program. While Lindenwood was at the NAIA level, Ross’ players won 10 All-American awards, including six first-team honors. Jeff Hynes was twice named the Rimington Award Winner as the best offensive center in the NAIA. Ross coached three HAAC Players of the Year with DeDe Dorsey winning the award in 2004 and Denodus O’Bryant winning back-toback awards in 2009 and 2010. Ross’ players were named first-team all-HAAC 37 times, 32 players were named second-team all-conference, and 27 received third-team honors. Ross did one of his best coaching jobs in 2011 as he led Lindenwood through its transition season as the program moves from the NAIA to the top NCAA Division II conference. The Lions went 8-3 and were the only second-year transition school to record a winning record. Lindenwood’s offense continued its high-scoring ways despite the tougher competition, and having a new quarterback and nearly a completely new offensive line. The Lions averaged over 40 points and 367.9 total yards a game. In 2010, the Lions went 9-2 overall in their final season of NAIA play, and finished second in the HAAC with a 9-1 mark. Lindenwood advanced to the NAIA Playoffs for the fourth straight season and fifth overall appearance in Ross’ tenure. The Lions had one of the best offenses in the entire country. Lindenwood possessed the No. 1 passing offense, the best passing efficiency, top offense yards per game, and second most points scored. In 2009, Ross led the Lions to their best season in program history as they advanced to the national championship game. The Lions went 10-0 during the regular season and won the program’s third HAAC Championship. Lindenwood hosted playoff games in the first and second rounds and then traveled to Helena, Montana, where they faced Carroll College. The Lions would beat the Saints and move onto the national championship against defending champions, Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls upended the Lions 25-22. For the second straight season in 2009 the Lions had one of the most prolific offenses in the country. The Lions averaged over 53 points a game which was tops in the country and broke the school record for points scored with 744. Lindenwood finished ranked second in the country when the final polls came out, which was the highest ranking the school has ever accomplished. In 2008, Ross led the Lions to within one play of reaching the national championship game. The Lions went 9-1 during the regular season and finished second in the HAAC. Lindenwood had one of the top offenses in the country in 2008, setting school Alma Mater - University of Puget Sound records with over 40 points and 460 yards of total offense a game. Family: Wife Stacey, Daughters, Peyton, Ross led one of the most amazing one-season turnarounds in college football Shaelene, Son, Caden history. The Lions went 11-0 in the regular season, tying for the same number of wins the team earned in the previous four years combined, and won their first HAAC Head Coaching Career: Reg. Conf. title. In 2007, Ross directed the Lions to another conference title and national playoff 2002 Ottawa 5-5 5-4 appearance. Behind another high scoring offense, Lindenwood won its first 10 games 2003 Ottawa* 9-2 9-0 and finished the regular season ranked ninth in the nation. 2004 Lindenwood* 11-1 10-0 Prior to coming to Lindenwood, Ross was the head coach at Ottawa (Kan.) for two seasons. He posted a record of 14-7 there, winning the 2003 KCAC title and 2005 Lindenwood 7-4 7-3 advancing to the national playoffs. Prior to his stint at Ottawa, Ross served as the 2006 Lindenwood 5-7 5-5 defensive coordinator for three years and an assistant for one at Kansas Wesleyan. 2007 Lindenwood* 10-2 9-1 Ross has had five Lindenwood players sign NFL contracts and numerous others 2008 Lindenwood* 11-2 9-1 have signed contracts with other professional leagues. Dorsey and Brian Schaefering 2009 Lindenwood* 13-1 10-0 have played in the NFL, while Zac Atterberry, Marcel Thompson, and Roren Thomas 2010 Lindenwood* 9-2 9-1 signed with NFL teams after their Lindenwood careers. Dorsey was a member of the 2011 Lindenwood 8-3 N/A 2007 Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts, and Derrick Ward, a former player for * NAIA Playoff Ross at Ottawa, won a Super Bowl ring in 2008 with the New York Giants.

Off. Coordinator/ Asst. Head Coach Craig Schuler Craig Schuler is entering his ninth season in 2012 with the Lindenwood football program. He has been on Patrick Ross’ staff since the first day of the Ross era. Schuler came to Lindenwood in 2004, and has been a major part of the program’s turnaround. In 2012, he will serve as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach, as well as being the team’s recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach. This season will be Schuler’s 24th coaching football. In that time, he has won eight conference championship rings, including three as a member of the Lindenwood staff, and coached in 18 NAIA national playoff games. Last season, Schuler helped Lindenwood go 8-3 during its transition season from the NAIA to NCAA Division II level. Over the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator, Schuler has led a Lindenwood offense that has been one of the highest scoring teams in the country at any level. The Lions’ offense has averaged 49.6 points per game over the past 36 games, and has broken numerous national and school records along the way. The 2009 Lions averaged over 53 points per contest, and set a school record in points scored with 744. That year also saw the Lions’ offense rack up the awards, with freshman tailback Denodus O’Bryant being named the MVP of the league. In 2010, Schuler worked with another record-setting offensive unit, one which racked up 8.9 yards per play and 551 yards per game. The Lions continued their remarkable three-year run on offense in 2011, averaging 40.3 points per game against one of the toughest schedules faced by any Division II team in the nation. The Lions scored 60 touchdowns in 2011, giving them 140 trips to the end zone in their last 22 games. Since Schuler arrived at Lindenwood, the Lions have posted a record of 74-22, won three HAAC championships, and advanced to the NAIA Football Championship Series five times. Prior stops on the coaching trail for Schuler include 11 years at Benedictine (Kan.) and two at Avila (Mo.). He has served as a coordinator on both sides of the ball while coaching in the HAAC, and was a high school head coach in the Southern California Division I ranks. Schuler and his wife, Alison, have two daughters, Nikki and Katie.

today's game lindenwood lions vs. southwest baptist bearcats september 8, 2012 The 2012 home opener is tonight for the Lindenwood University football program, as the Lions take the field for the first time in front of what will be their shiny new home. The Lindenwood Student-Athlete Center, attached to the grandstand on the scoreboard end of the field, is only the latest of many shiny new jewels to be built on this incredible campus. The unique facility will house the football offices and locker room, as well as offices and locker rooms for all NCAA sports that play in Hunter Stadium. There are spacious meeting rooms, athletic training facilities, a Champions’ Room, and a stupendous Academic Success Center. If it is not the best facility in NCAA Division II, it is most certainly tied for first. The Lions opened the campaign on the road last weekend, winning their first official contest as a member of the MIAA, 49-28 over Lincoln University. The game was played in the remnants of Hurricane Isaac on Saturday afternoon, but the constant rain and wet field could not slow the Lion passing game--quarterback Ben Gomez threw for 407 yards and five touchdowns in his debut. The loaded Lion wide receiver corps also shined, with senior All-American candidate Andrew Helmick leading the way. He collected six catches for 108 yards to start his final season. There is great depth at receiver, though, and the Lions have as many as eight pass catchers who could be the star on a given night. Another important stat to be picked from the Lincoln box score: the Lions averaged 16.3 yards per completion, which speaks both to the ability to run with the ball after the catch, and to Gomez’ ability to get the ball downfield. Over on defense, the Lions were camped out in the Blue Tiger backfield all day, registering five QB sacks and a whopping 13 tackles for loss. The 28 points given up is more than a little misleading: a bad snap turnover on the Lions’ first offensive play resulted in an 11-yard drive for Lincoln’s first score, and the home team’s final score came against the backups on another short field drive with 18 seconds remaining in the game. At the end of the day, the Lions surrendered just one legit scoring drive (a 77-yard scoring pass with 30 seconds left before halftime was painful for defensive coordinator Deion Melvin), and the relentless pressure up front will play well all season. The debut of heralded true freshman middle linebacker Connor Harris went well, as the youngster from Blue Springs
South led the Lions with eight tackles. He also punted twice, and returned a kickoff – he is going to stuff some stat sheets before his career at LU is over. Senior defensive end Joe Day enjoyed a big day at Lincoln, posting two of the sacks and three other tackles in the backfield, getting his season off to a flying start. The Lions got solid games from everyone that traveled along the defensive front, and that is going to be a key to the success of this team in its maiden voyage through the nation’s toughest Division II football conference. Tonight’s opponent will give the Lions a good idea of where they stand in Week Two. The Bearcats, led by veteran head coach Keith Allen, fell behind early in their opener at home against Truman State, 21-0, before rallying to close the gap to 21-14 late in the third quarter. Truman stiffened, however, and was able to hold off the Bearcats, 24-14. Southwest Baptist was led on offense in the opener by the pass and catch duo of quarterback Dan Connors and wide receiver Derwyn Lauderdale. A sophomore from the Houston area, Lauderdale hauled in 10 receptions, while the 6’6” Connors completed 20 of 45 passes for 176 yards. His three interceptions were costly, though, and the battle of the takeaway looms large here tonight. Defensively, the Bearcats were led by senior outside linebacker Austin Otwell (10 tackles and a sack), and junior inside backer Shaquille Shedd (eight tackles), a preseason AllAmerican. Getting to Gomez will be a goal for the Bearcats tonight, to be sure, but committing to man coverage against the Lions’ stable of very fast skill players on offense is a dicey proposition. Keep an eye on that battle for a key to the game. There is much excitement on the Lindenwood campus these days. With the move into the new conference and a higher level of competition for all the NCAA sports, each game seems to bring a little more buzz to the campus. The Lions got off to a good start last weekend, and this is the first of four straight home games– a schedule quirk which means LU will have to make hay while the sun shines in September. Tough road trips and tough opponents are coming, starting with tonight, which is the only way the Lions would have it.

Lindenwood Looks To Prove Itself in 2012 The Lindenwood football team enters a new era in 2012. The Lions are in their first season as a NCAA Division II program and also the first year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), the toughest NCAA Division II football conference. Along with the excitement of taking the next step, Lindenwood also has the challenge of proving it belongs in the NCAA and MIAA. The Lions received a modest level of respect in the conference preseason polls by being selected in the middle of the pack in the MIAA. Middle of the pack, though, has not been the standard for the Lindenwood during the Patrick Ross era. There are several key areas in 2012 that will determine whether the Lions can surpass expectations and quickly move into the upper echelon of the MIAA. Winning the Line The number one question about Lindenwood’s move to the NCAA Division II level was whether its big men can handle the transition. The program’s transition season in 2011 left this question unanswered, but early indications are that the 2012 defensive and offensive lines will be up to the challenge. On the defensive side of the ball, the defensive line will be one of the unit’s top strengths. Last year, the defensive line helped Lindenwood record 35 sacks and 83 tackles for loss. Leading the way on the line are returners Joe Day, Sean Gracy, Chaz Fulton, and Malach Radigan. Day led the team last year with 9.0 tackles for loss, and Gracy was second on the team with 8.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Radigan is the emotional leader of the unit at the nose tackle spot, and Fulton moves into a starting role in just his second collegiate season. The line also has a lot of depth including Cody Reider, last year’s sack leader with 6.0 sacks, and Jon McComb, who was third with 7.5 tackles for loss. Over on offense, the line has plenty of experience. Three starters return from last year’s offensive line, led by the team’s 2011 Most Valuable Offensive Big Man, center Matt Atley. Other starting returners are tackles Matt Andreolli and Jacob Heneisen. Another starting position will be taken by Kadre Pinder, a transfer from NCAA Division I Ohio University. Best-Ever? Wide receiver Andrew Helmick and running back Denodus O’Bryant will both make their final cases this year in an attempt to prove that they are the top players in school history at their respective positions. In a small sample size of games, both players proved last year that they are great players at the next level. This year will test both players every week throughout the season.

2012 LINDENWOOD FOOTBALL GAME DAY PROGRAM
Helmick had one of the best seasons in school history for a receiver last year. He set a school record with 81.9 receiving yards a game and finished with 56 catches for 901 yards and 12 touchdowns. If he repeats those numbers in 2012, he will shatter Lindenwood’s career records in every major receiving category. O’Bryant was injured for much of 2011, but still showed his explosiveness late in the season when he rushed for 179 yards on just 11 carries against the MIAA’s Central Missouri. He is already Lindenwood’s career touchdown leader with 47 trips to the endzone, and he needs just over 600 rushing yards to become the school’s career leader in that category. Passing the Ball The biggest light always shines on the quarterback, and this year it will shine on Ben Gomez. Gomez seeks to prove that he is on the same level of great Lions quarterbacks like Philip Staback and Ben Kisner. Gomez has experience surpassing school legends. Last season, he attended Saddleback College, the same junior college that Colt Brennan played at before becoming at Hawaii, statistically, one of the top NCAA Division I quarterbacks of all-time. Gomez erased Brennan from Saddleback’s record book by completing 268 passes for 3,651 yards, and 33 touchdowns. With a plethora of skills players, and an improving offensive line around him, Gomez has high expectations to put up big numbers in a Lindenwood uniform. Stopping the Pass Lindenwood’s starting cornerbacks were expected to be one of the best duos in the conference, but that position now has to face another hurdle after an injury to Tevin McCaskill against Lincoln. McCaskill will be replaced by Justin Broome. Broome led Lindenwood in interceptions last season and pick off a pass last weekend. On the other side is Pierre Desir who is already a NCAA Division II All-American and two-time all-MIAA selection during his time at Washburn. He intercepted 12 passes in just two seasons with the Ichabods. True Freshmen With its move to the MIAA and NCAA, Lindenwood’s recruiting has improved greatly the last two years. Last year’s class was so good, in fact, that several players could see action as true freshmen. One of the top players in last year’s recruting class was linebacker Connor Harris. Harris was the 2011 Missouri Class 6 Defensive Player of the Year at Blue Springs South after he led his team to a state championship. He was also named the Kansas City Star Player of the Year after last season.

Lindenwood Takes Another Step Lindenwood Li d dU University i i received i d word d over the summer that it had taken another step in its transition to the NCAA. On JJuly 12, President James D. Evans, PhD and Lindenwood Athletics Administrators received a call from the NCAA Division II Membership Committee and learned that the University has been granted provisional membership. Lindenwood remains on track to become a full NCAA member for the 2013-14 school year. “We were very pleased with the news,” said Evans. “Many people all across our campus have been working toward this goal for some time. I am proud of their hard work, and thankful for the support of our board of directors, who made this possible when our journey began three years ago.” In its provisional year, Lindenwood will continue to follow all NCAA Division II regulation and rules. Lindenwood can begin using the NCAA brand for promotional and recruiting purposes, including the NCAA logo, but it is ineligible for postseason competition
ffor the h year. Lindenwood is now officially a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The MIAA sponsors championships in 19 sports and is currently a 15-member conference with schools in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Lindenwood will sponsor 27 NCAA sports. On the men’s side, the Lions will compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, lacrosse, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. The women’s sports teams are basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. “We have come a long way in a short amount of time,” said Athletics Director John Creer. “I am proud of our administrators and coaches, and faculty and staff, all of whom have adjusted and adapted and have continued to amaze me with their creativity.”
Around Campus Lindenwood begins MIAA play in five other fall sports in 2012, as women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s cross country get introduced to one of the top NCAA Division II conferences. The women’s volleyball team had a very successful season last year with a 27-13 record, including three victories over MIAA schools and seven wins over NCAA Division II GLVC programs. The Lady Lions concluded the year by winning the Lindenwood Transition Tournament over a number of programs that are also making the transition from the NAIA to the NCAA. Lindenwood, which went 3-1 last weekend at the Drury Classic, lost its top offensive threat from that team but still returns a very strong roster, especially among the specialist positions. Kaila Schrimpf returns as the libero after averaging over five digs a set last season, and Emma Brydels was last year’s starting setter, averaging nearly six assists a set. The top offensive threats are outside hitter Erin Anselman and middle hitter Katie Weber. Both players averaged around 2.40 kills a set last season. Defense was the story for the two Lindenwood soccer teams last season. The men’s team did not allow over one goal in a game for the final 12 games of the season, and the women’s team allowed over one goal just three times in 17 games. Both defenses need
20

to be stingy again this year in order for the two teams to be successful in the MIAA. The Lady Lions return eight starters from last year’s 8-6-3 squad, including many of the key pieces of its backfield. The offense will be led by Bailey Cody who has led Lindenwood in goals in each of her first two seasons on the team. The team’s recruiting class looks to also add some punch to an offense which struggled to score goals at times last year. The Lions return seven players who started at least 10 games in 2011 when Lindenwood went 10-8-0. Lindenwood will be starting a freshman goalkeeper throughout the season as they choose between Jonathan Newkirk, Aitor Vaillo, and Fermin Hughes. Through one weekend, Lindenwood women’s team went 1-0-1 and did not allow a single goal. The men’s team went 0-1-1 and allowed just two goals. Cross country enters a new era as Randy Cole takes over as the men’s and women’s head coach. He comes to Lindenwood after holding the same position since 1997 at NCAA Division I Kansas State and Wyoming. Cole will inherit a very young roster, with just six juniors and seniors spread between the two teams. Tanya Chibanda led the women’s team to a fourth-place finish at the Big River Early Bird meet last weekend, while Ben McGraw was the top finisher for the men’s team, which came in 12th.

Harlen C. Hunter Stadium
Hunter Stadium is one of the busiest places on campus throughout the year. It is the home for Lindenwood football, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and both men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. The stadium was built in 1976 by the St. Louis football Cardinals as a place to hold their training camp. In 1988, the stadium was renovated and a new artificial turf was installed. Eleven years later in 1999, Hunter Stadium debuted a new turf called Astro Play. After the 2004 season, Hunter Stadium underwent its biggest renovation. The stadium was completely renovated, including end zone seating and a brand new two-story press box. In 2009, the playing surface at the facility was replaced with Enviroturf. The facility has hosted NAIA football playoff games in 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010, and the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championships in 2001 and 2002. The last three seasons the St. Louis Rams held training camp scrimmages at Hunter Stadium. All three games drew over 5,000 specators. During the NFL Lockout in 2011, several St. Louis Rams players chose Lindenwood for offseason training. The stadium is named after Dr. Harlen C. Hunter, who founded the St. Louis Orthopedic Sports Medicine Clinic in Chesterfield in 1979, the first clinic of its kind in the St. Louis area. Hunter was the key to the upgrades of the playing surface in 1988.
The New Home of Lindenwood Athletics The Lindenwood University Student-Athlete Center is a 43,450-square-foot athletic building with an academic support center, new locker rooms for football and other Hunter Stadium sports, coaches’ offices, and a Hall of Fame Room. The building opens in early September. The ground floor of the building will house home and visitor locker rooms and athletic training facilities. The nearly 3,000-square-foot academic success center is on the second floor, along with locker rooms for men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and field hockey. The third floor overlooks the bleachers and the scoreboard, and consists of coaches’ offices, a Hall of Fame Room, and meeting rooms.

ABOUT LINDENWOOD With her husband, Major George Sibley, pioneer educator Mary Sibley founded Lindenwood as a school for young women in 1827. Lindenwood was committed to combining professional issues with academic pursuits, the social with the intellectual, and the spiritual with the physical. In short, Mary Sibley brought holistic higher education to the American frontier. Lindenwood became a Presbyterian college in 1853 and still maintains a historical relationship with the Presbyterian Church. In 1918, Lindenwood became a four-year college, and in 1969, Lindenwood attempted to strengthen its financial base by becoming co-ed. The school altered its name in 1974. The Lindenwood Colleges referred to the school’s individual operations for men and women and also to its accelerated evening program, The Lindenwood College for Individualized Education, and its graduate programs. During the ‘70s and ‘80s, the school struggled with a changing economy and accumulated substantial indebtedness. Enrollments began to decline, and by the spring of 1989, the number of day
students had dropped below 1,000. As well, institutional change during those decades had led to some loss of clarity of mission. In view of these fiscal and cultural challenges, the Board of Directors resolved to “refound” the school by returning to the fundamental precepts of individualized, holistic, values-oriented higher education that combines the practical with the academic. A president experienced in financial management and organizational revitalization was hired to lead the whole Lindenwood community in its collective renewal initiative. The result was a period of rapid growth and innovation that enabled the College to become the higher-education leader that it is today. At the height of its revival, Lindenwood College became Lindenwood University in 1997. Enrollment burgeoned, and new construction arrived in late 1997 with the Hyland Performance Arena. By 1998-99, the annual enrollment approached 9,500, the faculty was growing, and the school balanced its budgets and increased revenues. In 2000, Lindenwood dedicated the first of eight new residence halls to be constructed over the next decade—the first such construction in more than 30 years. In 2002, Lindenwood built the beautiful new Spellmann Campus Center. The 136,000-square-foot J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts opened in 2008. The growth has not slowed. Additional construction has included expansion and renovation of Harmon Hall, now the home of the Lindenwood University School of Business and Entrepreneurship, and the 120,000-square-foot Evans Commons opened to great fanfare in 2011. A new athletics building is being added in 2012 adjacent to Harlen Hunter Stadium, corresponding with Lindenwood’s transition to the NCAA, Division II. Academically, Lindenwood has grown as well with extension of its longstanding general accreditation, the additional of numerous specialized accreditations for individual programs, and the addition of a number of degree programs, including the school’s first doctoral degrees in the School of Education. Mary Sibley ran a tightly managed school with a resourceful spirit and a clear purpose. She would have been proud of today’s Lindenwood.
