RESEARCH

How to do architecture that solves the problems rather than the symptoms of modern day crisis?

I

n the investigation part, which marks the starting point of the project, we tried to summarize and analyse problems with present-day living. With a special focus on pandemicrelated topics we tried to formulate a sort -of „Manifesto“ that accumulates concepts & ideas that later were inserted into the project itself.

P R O B L E M S

ISOLATION Little contact with other people Physical contact is regarded as dangerous. Outdoorspaces for gathering as well as parks and nature are visited less.

ARTIFICIAL SOCIAL CONTACT Contact is easy to maintain due to social media and internet access. Artificial interaction is more and more dictated by social media providers. Psychological and mental problems arise.

LACK OF MOVEMENT Movement between Tasks and differen activities of the daily life fall short. These used to act as interaction opportunities. Our buildings don‘t encourage moving inside the building but rather sta indoors or leaving the complex altogether.

PAST Definitive housing solutions that were seen as housing machines. They were designed for a specific purpose and failed to be good housing solutions as soon as requirements changed. = no flexibility, low re-use posibilities of materials and space

PRESENT Living has become more isolated. Links to nature and our neighbours have been seperated. Economic interest ist rated above the well-being of the individual. Flats and living space is generally seen as a capital investment.

FUTURE Relinking our connection to our neighbours and nature. Providing a more social approach to architecture and the use of living spaces.

ADAPTABILITY Future-proof architecture needs flexible systems that can react to change in society and living cond itions. Concepts and ideas that help provide that architecture: URBAN MINING DESIGN Architecture whitout the use of permanent / irreversible connections. Includes the detailed calatogization of used materials for easier re-use later.

MODULAR / PRE-FABRICATION Modular, easy to adapt systems that can be pre-fabricated and installed without much effort on-site.

MOVEMENT Creating movement within the buidling apart from the „classical“ staircase and elevator. New forms of moving between levels. The posibility to „get lost“ and find hidden places and situations. Like in a small village with narrow streets. HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL VIEWS Using existing structure and removing restraining walls. Opening up spaces between levels to allow for interaction and connection. New pathways / meeting points / resting points.

TACTICAL URBANISM

SHARED SPACES Respect the different levels of shared spaces; and incorporate uses into those definition. Through this the community-feeling can be strengthened. LAYERS OF SHARED SPACE (see also next page for more info) Intimate - Piso = respect and protect these spaces Familiar - Planta = extend and enable these, through connections with newly created elements

Activating the hidden potential of distribution zones through „interventions“, that can create incentive to claim space and re-use it according to needs.

NATURE Providing the posibility to come into contact with nature - and it‘s aspects; light, fresh air and plants, while being confined within built environments is key to sustainable future architecture. CONTACT WITH NATURE

Neighbourhood - Cluster / Racimo = create „neighbourhoods“ through joining different levels; create meeting points

Via: gardens, (Indoor) parks, patios, rooftop greenery, urban mining, liberal ventilation systems (vertical & horizontal), opening up facades, ...

Village - Whole building = enhance the building as a whole with the insertion of new uses. „Pueblo“-like atmosphere. Interior „streets“ provoke new ways of experiencing the buildings.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN

Re-connect with nature through desing, natural materials and forms. Focus on circadian well-being.

MANIFESTO CONCEPTS & IDEAS FOR THE CONTEMPORARY BUILDING

LA TORRE SAN JORDI

How can we re-vitalise existing architecture while creating new forms of living together?

T

he „Torre San Jordi“ is a residental tower situated in San Juan, Alicante, in a very touristic area close to the beach. For this project we focused on the architectural posibilities that buildings like this one provide. Rather than limiting our thoughts to this specific area we took the Tower as a „canvas“ for our ideas; that in the end should be aplicable anywhere where architecture created „mis-used“ spaces.

ANÁLISIS E S PA C I O

What spaces can be re-claimed and used to enhace the building as a whole?

T

o see which spaces we could use to attach our „Parasitic“ architecture that re-enhances the building from within and tries to apply the concepts we formulated in our „Manifesto“, we looked at the facade of Torre San Jordi. Appartments whose windows were completely closed during our visits are „un-used“ spaces. We defined those spaces for every level of the tower and picked the most promising cluster to apply our ideas in detail.

MAIN CLUSTER

O

ur analysis showed that the best spot for our main cluster would be between the fifth and the eight storey. There, in this „belt“ (cinturón) around the middle of the tower, the most „un-used“ space accumulates. In this area we put the central meeting point, or market place. A vertical room-structure that connects all storeys. The unused space on the ground floor would be the Entrance Cluster, as well as a Cluster and place for a more public use.

he completely empty last storey of the building could be opened up to nature and made accessible to all the inhabitans of Torre San Jordi. It would be used for urban-gardening, roof top communal areas and such. Together with the Main Cluster in the middle and the Entrance Cluster at the bottom; the three parts form the whole „body“ of the parasite.

How does the contemporary city compressed into a contemporary building look?

T

he parasite architecture that uses the existing pillarstructure as a base grid and anchor-point runs from the first to the last storey. For part D. we focus on the Main Cluster area and it‘s central „market place“. Between the existing structure of the tower we insert modular wall, floor and facade elements that follow the given grid of the original structure. This construction method follows our principals that we defined in the „Manifesto“.

S

ection through the main cluster area, the „market place“. On the lowest floor this cluster provides a central meeting area that opens up over multiple levels. Workspaces, outside-areas, reading corners and other shared community spaces span acroos three levels. They are accessed from every floor. The facade is light and lets in a generous amount of light.

iew of the main cluster from the top most level. The „bridges“ can be seen that span the inner patio that forms the center point of this cluster. The module wall elemts are aligned along a grid that follows the original beam-structure of the building. They can be rearranged at will and are meant to provide inhabitants with some liberty how to „create“ their space.
