Labor candidate Peta Murphy is on a mission. This Karingal High School (Wagga Wagga) and ANU Law School graduate (she also has a double major in psychology in her science degree, and a Masters in criminology) has a clear vision of how her candidacy for the Federal seat of Dunkley should pan out. She explains. “A woman has never represented this electorate”, which is named after Louisa Dunkley who was a trade unionist and campaigner for women’s rights. (Dunkley, along with other operators, established the Victorian Women’s Post and Telegraph Association to advocate for equal pay and working conditions in 1900.) Murphy continues. “I’ve always been interested in policies that affect people’s lives. I never really wanted to be a lawyer” - her school advisor had told her that being a lawyer was a hard job for a girl – “and that was it. Needless to say I went to law school!” “I was always interested in justice policy and trying to work out how to make the streets safer, address domestic violence and support victims of crime. My father pointed out an ad in the paper in 1999 for the position of Federal Justice Policy Advisor to the ALP. I got it and worked for Hon Duncan Kerr in Canberra for three years.” In 2002, she left Canberra politics and began practicing as a criminal defence lawyer in Melbourne. She became a barrister in 2007, mainly dealing with legal aid clients, and her 15 years of practice has taken her from the Frankston Magistrates Court to the High Court of Australia. In 2011 things changed for Peta. “Rod had just secured a job overseas and I had plans to play squash at APRIL 2016 (53)

Stanford University as part of their Urban Squash program (which sees underprivileged kids play squash and receive academic tutoring), but I was diagnosed with breast cancer.” After years of treatment, and experiencing the health system up close, she’s now five years clear. It was the cancer experience that forced Murphy and her Baxter boy husband Rod (Glover) to reflect on what really matters. They bought on the Peninsula at the end of 2011 to be closer to family. “All these experiences have led me to where I am today. Knowing what Liberal bulk billing and hospital funding cuts mean for people, I am even more motivated to change things. Women need to have a stronger voice, whether in the areas of health, business, sport and

politics. We are a huge under-utilised resource and this needs to change,” she continues. Both Murphy’s parents are educators and always taught their children that if they worked hard enough they could achieve anything. “I am very passionate about education and renewables. Gonski schools funding will ensure that all children have access to high quality education and resources, and Labor is committed to renewable energy because it is good for the environment and for local jobs. We have to deal with emissions. Kristy Kendall is young, has two small boys, a Master’s degree in education (majoring in psychology), a double major in maths and drama and a CV that reads like she should be a lot older. Her voice is full of enthusiasm as she chats down the phone about dragging teaching and education into the 21st century and how she is going to do it – and you know she will.

At just thirty six years old she’s already the headmistress of Toorak College in Mt Eliza and although she’s only been in the role since January, she is determined that a) each of her students will get the well-rounded education they deserve and b) that Toorak College will be a leader in what teaching should look like for future generations. She explains. ”I want to encourage our girls to go their own personal route and to broaden their opportunities and yes, to fail! Failing is how we learn and grow. We can’t expect to be on top of our game every day and we need to explore how we communicate and engage on different levels. I intend Toorak students to be the drivers of their own learning.” Toorak College is co-educational from early learning through to grade four with a focus on Reggio Emilia principles. Kendall has got her students picking their level of challenge each day from grade five to year eight and dissecting their own strengths and weaknesses as learners. “The learning is in the way they develop coping mechanisms and problem solving skills and experiment in style,” she continues. “Our year nine Beyond Boundaries program with trips to India, Malaysia and indigenous communities opens minds and challenges ideals, while our VCE Edrolo program” (curriculum focused video lessons which enable students to watch videos of different teachers and complete live practice exams) “is challenging the way we learn. Next year we’ll look to replace text books and are already investigating redefining what a teacher’s role is in modern day education.” This exciting and thoroughly inviting headmistress is on a pathway to create, educate and invigorate her students. She moves from class to class to get to know them, coaches three aerobics teams and continually answers and asks, “Anything worthwhile takes hard work” she says, and one thing’s for certain she’s not afraid of hard work now, or in the future – a great future for Toorak College. Tenacious is coming The beautiful barque Tenacious is coming to Port Phillip in August 2016. The great news is that we can look forward to seeing her often as she will be based in Melbourne for over eight months.

She is owned and operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST is a registered charity founded in 1978). The JST also has another barque, the Lord Nelson, which visited us briefly in 2013, prior to attending the Centenary of the RAN in Sydney. The JST provides a sailing experience for handicapped people allowing them to participate fully in every aspect of the daily routine of manning its vessels on cruises of one day to over a month. Since being launched in 2000 the Tenacious has carried 9,000 physically disabled people and 3,000 wheelchair users. Lifts and wide doorways, allow wheelchair access, a talking compass and hydraulic powered wheel make it possible for physically handicapped and sight impaired persons to share in in every aspect of crewing from steering the ship, through hauling on the lines, to peeling the spuds for dinner. Those in wheelchairs even experience the view from high in the rigging by being hauled aloft in their wheelchair. The involvement of handicapped persons is made

possible by pairing them with ‘buddies’ who assist and share the experience with them. The program is enjoyed just as much by the non-handicapped buddies. Both handicapped and able-bodied readers who are interested can find details on the sailing program being offered as well as information about the two vessels and the story of the Jubilee Sailing Trust at: jst.org.au/australia/. Cruises of from one to twelve days are available until April 2017. Tenacious is a particularly interesting vessel. Constructed from wood she was built upside down inside a building, in a similar way to small boats. She is the world’s largest wooden hulled vessel, being constructed from laminated timber glued with epoxy. Those who are interested in small boat construction will know of the WEST System (wood-epoxy-saturation-technique). Handicapped persons were also involved in her building. She is termed a barque because of her rig; having three masts, with square sails on the fore and main masts and fore-and-aft sails on the mizzen (nearest the stern). Ship rig has square sails on all three masts. She left the UK in November 2015 and will reach Melbourne via the Caribbean, Panama, Pacific Islands and Sydney. Tyson’s Fight Tyson is a 15 year old young man, suffering from ‘FOP’ (Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressive) and is desperately needing assistance. Since being diagnosed nine years ago, he and his caring family have focused tirelessly on raising funds to contribute and support the research into finding a cure for this insidious disease. Regrettably, Tyson’s body is deteriorating and he is now confined to a wheelchair permanently. His family is hoping to receive enough support from the public, to purchase: • A much needed car / van suitable for transporting an electric wheel-chair (including a lifting platform). • Make essential modifications to the family home to ensure Tyson is able to continue living at home while maintaining a certain degree of independence. Despite all of his physical challenges, Tyson has retained his great sense of humour, an intense

love for his Western Bulldogs football team, being a Scout, playing computer games and just “hanging out” with his mates. ‘FOP’ (Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressive) is an extremely rare connective tissue disease. The condition is caused by a mutation of the body’s repair mechanism, which causes fibrous tissue (including muscle, tendon, and ligament) to be ossified spontaneously or when damaged. In many cases, injuries can cause joints to become permanently frozen in place. Surgical removal of the extra bone growths has been shown to cause the body to ‘repair’ the affected area with even more bone. This has the potential to leave Tyson totally immobilized. Hardcore storm chasers are active on the Mornington Peninsula. Melbourne is home to some of Australia’s most avid chasers and a growing number of them are beachloving locals. They are the men and women who jump in their cars with camera in hand and travel hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres in pursuit of a storm front while everyone else ducks for cover. It is the stuff of Hollywood movie scripts and it is happening in our midst every time the weather turns foul. The Victorian Storm Chasers (VSC) launched a Facebook page in 2012 and today it has more than 200,000 ‘Likes’. Two of the page’s volunteer administrators live on the Peninsula. They are Sarah Ramsdale, of McCrae, and Rose Steiner, of Somers, and the pair cannot get enough of Mother Nature’s fury. Ms Ramsdale, a 33 year old nurse and mother of one, has been looking up at the clouds since she was a little girl. “You just live and breathe it. You

wake up every morning and check the synoptic charts,” she said. “The last storm we chased we travelled over 1000km in a day, starting in Somers and ending up in Albury. Ms Steiner, a 39 year old hospitality worker, has been chasing storms since she was in her 20s and in 2013 she achieved the holy grail of storm chasing while in the US – a photograph of a tornado. “It’s just a passion,” she said. “We haven’t managed to photograph a tornado in Victoria, yet.” The VSC has images from some of Victoria’s most severe weather events, including a 2010 hail storm that wreaked havoc in Melbourne and a severe thunderstorm on Christmas Day 2011. “That (Christmas Day, 2011) was one of the first times I saw the Bureau of Meteorology issue a severe thunderstorm warning with a possibility of tornadoes,” Ms Steiner said. VSC fans were also in action during Geelong’s recent flash flooding and one of them captured video of “a street turning into a river”. The VSC’s mission is to “promote

the thrill of chasing and provide a place where the community can come together and share their experiences”. It showcases top shelf severe weather images and provides information and education. As to whether climate change has altered the chase, these Peninsula administrators say that’s hard to judge. “Weather is always changing,” Ms Steiner said. “You do notice when it’s an El Nino you get more short-lived storms and when it’s a La Nina you get more heavy rainfall but whether or not you can put that down to climate change, we don’t know.” Meanwhile, for an insight into the VSC’s passion for severe weather, look no further than Facebook. While most Melbournians were praying for sunshine over the Labour Day long weekend, the VSC was hoping for something different. “Everybody loves a long weekend!!! Hopefully there will be some storm activity…” the VSC posted. Meet Angela Gallo, doula, birth photographer and self-professed ‘birth nerd’. This 30 year old mother of two and womb warrior from Rye, is on a mission to change the way women and their families experience birth.

Not satisfied with what she describes as Western society’s perception of childbirth, Gallow intends to use her skills to “change the face of birth for expectant mothers around the world”. In July she plans to travel the world for six months with her husband and two young children, photographing and documenting pregnancy, birth and motherhood in different cultures. She calls it a revolutionary adventure and will turn her images and stories into a real-time mini-series called ‘Diaries of a Globe Trottin’ Doula’ that will follow her as she delves into birthing experiences. She also intends to publish a book. “Despite all the wonderful things I get to see, I honestly feel there is much left to be desired,” she explains. “Women want more out of their individual experiences. They are hungry for positive change in birth culture. They want to end the taboos, stigma, censorship and the shame. Their hearts are getting bigger and their voices are getting stronger.” The accomplished photographer - she was awarded an

‘Honorable Mention’ at the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers’ 2016 Image of the Year Competition– has been capturing birth moments through her lens since 2014. Social media sites have stopped her from sharing many of her images and even shut her accounts down. More recently she has felt compelled to focus on activism and has now launched a crowdfunding campaign to help finance the production of ‘Diaries of a Globe Trottin’ Doula’ and is seeking sponsors. On her crowdfunding page Gallow writes: “Over the last two years, I have got to admit there have been some moments where I felt like giving up altogether. Mainstream birth culture has had me feeling like I was banging my head against a brick wall on many occasions. But it was that same frustration that led me to some major ‘a-ha!’ moments. I’ve thought long and hard about how I could do my part in improving birth outcomes for women. Such a big feat - and what could one woman do? This April, Anjum graces our homes with ‘Anjum’s Spice Stories’, a 12-part series bringing her across the world from London to the Mornington Peninsula. The series sees Anjum taking time from her crazy city life to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of Australia alongside her fantastic Indian cooking. Dubbed the Nigella of Indian cuisine, Anjum Anand is no stranger to educating the Western World on the simplicity and healthiness of real Indian cooking. “Traditional Indian dishes are very healthy. There’s a misconception that they’re very unhealthy,” she explains. “I’m a working mum. I need to cook my food and eat it in a way that is accessible. In reality I

don’t always have time to cook a big meal but I really believe in the nutrition of Indian food – all the ingredients that go into an Indian meal are superfoods.” Born outside of India, Anjum says the journey in becoming an expert on the cuisine has allowed her to discover a special connection with her roots. “Learning about the food as I’ve done with my career taught me so much more about the history of India. I think that every cuisine has a wonderful story and for me, it brought me closer to my own country’s heritage.” “You develop passion because you want people to understand and love it as much as you do,” she says. ‘Anjum’s Spice Stories’ celebrates the best of Victoria’s fresh produce and embraces Australia’s thirst for international gastronomy. “For me it was a great opportunity to talk about the cuisine because I felt like in Australia we haven’t yet fully understood it properly.” “[The series] is really an introductory course to Indian food with a bit of everything – a bit of treat food, a bit of tapas food, BBQ food, and also of course proper curry”, she explains. And the choice to come to Australia? “I find coming to Australia is very familiar. The greenery and the blue skies are very freeing. Honestly if it was a bit closer to everything and everyone I love, I’d probably move!” “Australians are adventurous cooks with great palates and they’re used to fiery, spicy foods so there’s no reason why Australians wouldn’t love Indian food.” Catch Anjum for the first episode of ‘Spice Stories’ on Monday April 4 at 7.30pm on Food Network.

Mikaela-Rose Fowler is beautiful, but she’s also got the brains, public speaking capabilities and empathy to get her to where she is going too. This twenty-one year old Somerville girl is heading to the Miss Galaxy Australia National Finals in April and she’s there to have some fun. She explains. “There are three sections in the Galaxy Australia Pageant: Teens, Miss and Mrs. I’m representing the Miss section. I was placed in the top ten last year and

have been fast tracked to the Nationals in the Gold Coast this time around! It’s going to be fun, although there’s a lot of work involved. There will be group fitness sessions on the beach”, which is not a problem as Mikaela-Rose loves to work out, “day photo shoots in swimwear and fashion, a sit down interview and plenty of rehearsals until the final day of competition on stage.“ Sounds busy, but this young beauty knows all about hectic schedules already. She’s in her final year of a Bachelor of Graphic Design at RMIT, works in a volunteer capacity as a graphic designer for the ‘Little Dreamers Charity’ supporting the siblings of sick children and young carers in Melbourne, is a complete gym and design junkie and loves to dance. “I’m used to being on stage because I’m a dancer and I really enjoy public speaking - so I’m not too nervous!” she continues. “You’ve got to have fun with

it. I’ve just handed over the crown of Miss Westernport 2015, so I’ve got a bit of experience behind me. I’ve spent the last year attending community events and being the face of the Western Port Festival.” Pageantry work is not for the faint hearted. All the behind scenes work including building a portfolio of charity work, showing up to events and keeping yourself looking good takes effort, initiative and determination. If Mikaela-Rose wins the Nationals she’ll be off to the States to compete with girls from around thirty different countries! Does the thought of that scare this Somerville local? “It’s very exciting. ‘Singing postie’ warms hearts and sets Facebook alight BY ANDREA KELLETT

Mt Eliza locals have used social media to identify a joyful Australia Post employee dubbed the ‘singing postie’. Mt Martha’s Robin Wood, 56, has been singing his way around his postal route for the past 10 years and the man with the big voice is delivering much more than mail – he’s making locals smile. It’s a human touch that has been the domain of nature strip chatter for years, until it struck a chord on Facebook. It started with this post: “Went for a walk and was sitting in my car when I heard someone singing “we will sing in the sunshine” really well and really loud. It was the local postie! Just idling along singing for the joy of it! Magic moment. Thanks Mr Mt Eliza postie with the grey beard. You made my day.” Then, one of the 4447 members of Facebook group WTF Mt Eliza got wind of it and the town was talking. Within a few posts the loyal employee, he’s been doing the job for 30 years, had been named and stories of his joyfulness were flowing in: “Don’t you love him. He especially sings louder when the dogs bark at him,” one APRIL 2016 (53)

posted. “I love our singing postie. Makes me smile every time,” another said. And this: “Definitely Postie Rob. An absolute golden gem for Australia Post. The kids have all grown up with him delivering our mail. Yes, they used to ALL get rubber bands. My dog loves him more. Always makes my day when I get to chat, wave or even toot the car horn to say G’day.” Mornington Peninsula Magazine tracked him down and asked the father of two (Rhainsley and Jamieson) if the talk was true. “Yes, I’ve been singing for my own enjoyment for 10 years or so,” he said. “I sing on my postie round to cheer up people because over the time I’m seeing more and more stress and if I can make people smile then I’ve done a good deed for the day.” It turns out he is from a musical family and rumours he introduces himself as Robin the Hood are true. “It gets a smile which is the aim of the game,” he said. Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong are his personal favourites and he’s had his fair share of requests. Perhaps the last word, however, should be left to the fan who posted this: “Should we report him to his superiors for being awesome?”

yacht club facilities and public toilets. Outdoor areas have been landscaped. Mr Dooley said the curved finish of the building had been designed to respond to shapes found in the foreshore environment, such as the meandering Kananook Creek. “The Yacht Club has been architecturally designed to complement the landscape of the Frankston foreshore and its surrounding area, through its aesthetic design and features such as galvanised steel which protects it from wind damage and rising sea levels and corrosive resistant elements. The site boasts many features, including a public café and significant decking overlooking the beach, a first-floor restaurant with a balcony and a flexible indoor-outdoor dining area, public amenities and yacht club facilities including club rooms, change rooms, store rooms, a boat yard, boat sheds and a control tower. There is also additional ramp access made available for small boats and housing for rescue boats. Every level will boast unrivalled views of Port Phillip Bay, all complemented by Australian Cyprus timber.”

The Frankston Yacht Club, founded in 1937, remains as a tenant in the new building. The original Frankston Yacht Club clubhouse was built in 1973 and extended in 1981 in preparation for hosting the World Fireball Championships. The club boatshed was built in 1960 from fees earned by club members and their boats used in the filming of Stanley Kramer’s 1959 feature film ‘On the Beach’ at Canadian Bay, Mt Eliza. In 1981/82 the boatshed was extended along with the clubhouse to provide more boat storage and new accommodation for the patrol boats. Frankston Yacht Club has continued to operate during the works from a demountable next to Kananook Creek. Frankston Council has funded most of the $10.5 million project and the Federal Government has contributed $1.25 million from the Community Development Grants Program. Overall Vocational Student of the Year Nicholas Swinton, student of Chisholm Mornington Peninsula Campus in Rosebud was recently awarded Vocational Student of The Year for Conservation & Land Management and Overall Vocational Student of the Year at the Chisholm Education Awards 2016. Based in Zimbabwe while in the army, Nicholas was recruited to train anti-poaching forces to track down poachers. This effort took his love of the environment to another level by showing him how much he could do to protect it. Back in Australia he decided to formally study the subject of his passion and when he searched online he found exactly what he was looking for at the Chisholm Mornington Peninsula Campus in Rosebud. “I thought I knew a lot about the environment but when I started studying for my Certificate IV in Conservation and Land Management at Chisholm Rosebud I found out just how much more there was to learn.

“I was a competitive kid and loved that swimming enabled me to compete against myself. You’re always looking to better your last time. I made the National team in year twelve in 2005 and was doing nine pool sessions a week plus yoga and Pilates. 2008 saw me win medals in Beijing. You’ve got to believe in yourself to get to championship level and you’ve got to enjoy it – a happy swimmer is a good swimmer.” It is this motto that has led him to taking over the boutique New Wave Swim School in Frankston South and making waves about the necessity of children learning

Miss International hopeful holds Mt Eliza fundraiser BY ANDREA KELLETT

Jessica Martini aims to put the Mornington Peninsula on the map when she competes in a prestigious international pageant in the US and she’s hoping a gala event in Mt Eliza will help her get there. The 27-year-old Hastings woman has qualified to represent Australia at the Miss International Pageant in Jacksonville, Florida, after being crowned Miss Australia International 2016. The event is in July and Martini is holding a ‘Gowns & Crowns Fundraising Gala’ at Morning Star Estate on Saturday, May 7, to raise funds. “From plane tickets and accommodation to gowns, shoes, program ads, hair and make-up, wardrobe and more, the costs are quickly escalating and I can’t take on this journey alone,” she explains. “I’m holding this gala dinner to help raise much-needed funds to help me on my way to the United States of America and I’m hoping my local community can get behind

me and help me more than ever!” The Miss International Pageant has been developed to promote young women and their accomplishments and each contestant must be committed to a worthwhile cause of her choosing. Martini is an ambassador for the Cancer Council Victoria, the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Bully Zero Foundation. She works full time and in her spare time she is as a youth mentor and volunteer for the Miss Western Port Pageant and the Western Port Festival. She says pageants are a great way for women to “challenge themselves mentally and physically, to make a positive impact in their community, gain new friendships and be a voice for the things they are passionate about”. Enormous billboards with Che Guevera’s image decorate the buildings as, driving alongside the old relic cars of the 50’s, you’ll make your way into the capital, Havana.

It’s here you could be mistaken for thinking you’re in Europe. The cobblestone laneways running off the main Obispo Street are full of colour, flavour and music. You’ll find small cafes and bars with wooden shutter windows and furnishings from a bygone era, one where the American mafia’s dollar ruled and their cabarets and casinos dotted the town. There’s plenty to see in this city of revolution. For a glimpse into creative Cuba, there’s the Museo Nacional De Bellas Artes (Musuem of Modern Art) and the Museo de la Revolucion (Museum of the Revolution), the latter’s grounds holding the tank Fidel Castro rode through the streets of Havana in, during the Bay of Pigs invasion. At the end of a long day, do as Hemmingway did and enjoy a refreshment at the Hotel Ombus Mundos. Like jumping back into the 1930’s, the ambience here is amazing – as are their mojitos! Dragon summed it up in the lyrics, for now is the time to see Cuba because the inevitable changes will come. Stef Boadle, founder of More Tea and Co. Co Place

When Stef Boadle moved to the peninsula about 5 years ago, she knew it was time to create her own brand. She had left behind a corporate career, which involved such things as launching Jetstar in Australia (while managing an ad agency), and attending Harvard Business School in Boston, studying entrepreneurship and negotiation on a scholarship. When it came time to do her own thing, Stef knew it had to be something she was passionate about. Being a reformed coffee drinker and an avid tea lover, she wanted to make properly brewed tea accessible and available to people outside the home. Never one to do things by halves, she gained her tea certification and used this expertise to choose only the finest quality teas from across the globe. The local community has particularly embraced Stef’s invention, her beautiful glass and bamboo More Tea bottles. In recent times, imitation bottles have been popping up, but the peninsula can lay claim to being the birth place of the original (and arguably the best) of these. Thanks Stef! Stef has also opened a great little co-working

space, Co. Co Place in Mornington, and she says, “I can’t tell you, even in my own business, how much More Tea has gone in leaps and bounds, just from being around and being reinspired by other people. The more productive someone is next to you, it just feeds you. I’m over the moon with how it’s worked out and I can’t wait for the future.”

Describe your style: I definitely dress to where we live and who I am. The uniform here is cons. No heels allowed! I’m very simplistic, tom-boyish even. I’m either doing active stuff in my active wear (I play tennis a few times a week), otherwise it’s mostly jeans, t-shirt and cons. Relaxed style. Even if Im going to Melbourne, I can still be me. My style is just to be who I am. Do you think Mornington Peninsula fashion has a certain look or feel? It is definitely that fitness and active lifestyle. Nothing over the top. No one takes themselves too seriously around here and if they do its pretty obvious. I don’t think there is a set uniform but there are a lot of people who are

just happy in their own skin.

What are a couple of your favourite blogs or websites and why? Definitely Ted. It’s a great way to stay connected with what is going on, and different views of the world. I do receive the Harvard Business Review blogs. Again, a great way to keep up to date with what’s new, and see some of the great things that people are doing. I follow a few tennis players on Instagram for inspiration and training tips. Instagram becomes like a lot of little blogs for me. Most of the products I buy I find on Instagram, and I like to support small business. The social media examiner is a blog I will read, it is fabulous. And I’ll tell you where I get all my recipes, Melbourne Food Files. It’s really great because I’m not the best cook but its all simple good food. And impressive. Can you tell us one or two of your fave local spots? Definitely the Milk Bar in Mount Martha and the Mount Martha Tennis Club, And the Golf Club in Cape Schank. Those are my happy places.

Getting ready for the trip of a lifetime Two teams of enthusiastic and committed Peninsula School students have their sights set high. They’re preparing for the World Challenge Expedition to be held later this year in Central America and they know that training is the key to success.

“This is a challenge to trump all challenges. If we don’t get a realistic idea of what’s in store, we’re in trouble,” says Sue Barlow, The Peninsula School World Challenge Expedition Leader. Last month on a hot and humid day, both teams set off for an intensive training expedition through the gorgeous countryside of the Bunyip State Forest. Their plan was to prepare for and practice a number of different scenarios for their trek so they could apply some of their learning from the months prior. What they didn’t expect was to be practising in the same weather conditions as they are likely to experience in Costa Rica and Nicaragua later in the year. This was a key focus for the team, hungry hikers were not an option! The teams rehearsed many ‘in country’ scenarios including broken legs, river crossings, lost backpacks and lost people. There was a hilarious bus booking in Spanish with an unsafe bus and an incapacitated driver. The teams realised their Spanish skills needed vast improvement especially for the leg of the trip through Nicaragua, a largely non English speaking country. However, the most important lesson learned through the training was the time spent together as a group, getting to know each other better, identifying the character strengths of the team, practicing leadership skills and having a sing and a laugh as they walked. There’s a lot this group will learn through this experience. Year 11 student, Lucy Smith explained “I am most looking forward to helping the less fortunate communities of Central America smile a little more, discovering more of what our world has to offer, creating unforgettable memories and experiencing new and exciting challenges with such an awesome group of people.” This trip has highlighted many things, but most of all, it really set the scene for the fantastic time they we will have when we do the ‘real thing’ later this year. Nicaragua and Costa Rica better watch out! The Peninsula School is coming!

A maze of connection for kids, families and local culture Building on the success of their inaugural summer lantern event, Boneo Maze is hosting a school holiday program to promote well-being, relaxation and connection for families. Commencing on Good Friday with kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s yoga and nature craft activities, the program also includes indigenous cultural tours. Held in the heart of the park, the kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s yoga is aimed at children from 5 to 10 years as a fun, mind-body activity. Available every day from Good Friday until Sunday April 3, the yoga is being offered free of charge (park entry fee required). As well as the free Easter holiday program, the kids will be kept busy by the regular program of adventure activities including pedal boats, climbing wall, bungy trampolines and inflatable waterslides. Bookings are essential for the indigenous cultural tour, inspired and led by Gunditjamara elder, Uncle Lionel Lauch with his unique presentation of living culture. With permission from Bunwurrung elder, Aunty Carolin Briggs, Lionel will take visitors on a walk through the wetlands sharing stories and identifying bush tucker plants and their significance to Aboriginal people. The 1 hour tour commences at 10.30 am (check dates) at a cost of $30pp. The tour includes a didgeridoo healing meditation and visitors are free to enjoy the rest of the 27-acre park, mazes, free activities and games garden afterwards. Australia’s wool industry is going from strength to strength thanks to a strategic move on the Peninsula’s doorstep. The nation’s largest independent wool broker, the Australian Wool Network, has opened a purpose-built processing plant in Carrum Downs. Dunkley Federal Liberal MP Bruce Billson officially opened the new Hysport factory on March 9. AWN acquired the third-generation knitwear manufacturer and retailer Hysport Pty Ltd in 2014, making AWN the only wool marketing company with its own Australian-based manufacturing facility. Factory floor space at the new Carrum Downs site has increased threefold over Hysport’s former Seaford plant and seven new jobs have been created. The factory is one of three Australian knitwear manufacturers using ‘whole garment’, or seamless, technology. Hysport chief executive officer Rod Murray said the move was in stark contrast to the nationwide trend of manufacturing decline. “Manufacturing in Australia is going through tough times but we are bucking the trend – you can count the number of Australian knitwear manufacturers remaining on two hands,’’ he said.

Hysport Pty Ltd manufactures garments made from pure wool and wool blends, marketed under the brands MerinoSnug and Only Merino. At the official opening, Kangaroo Island wool growers inspected their first regionally branded pure wool garments to come off the production line, complete with a swing tag linked via a QR code to a video showcasing the island’s wool. The branded garments will be marketed through retail outlets at Australian international airports. Artist thirsty to paint up Summer in Flinders

A few years ago Ria Brenchley moved from outer Melbourne to Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula, found her creative home, and now paints full time. This has resulted in her latest series ‘Peninsula Roaming’, which celebrates a love of the Peninsula and its rugged coastlines, golden pastures, sunny beaches and hay bale harvests. Ria’s technique exploits the palette knife and results in highly textural paintings full of colour and movement. “I have always drawn and painted.

At a very young age I entered a colouring competition for a newspaper. It was a simple garden scene, however I extended the drawing to include a detailed landscape with large trees and complex plants. It was ‘out of the box’, I won and was very proud. I had found what I loved to do at an early age yet it took me many years to come back to it in the form of painting. Those years were filled by a busy career, being a mum and a significant family health issue. It is comforting that many years later, now in my 50’s, I am able to immerse myself painting these landscapes that were quietly waiting for my return,” says Ria. Ria Brenchley celebrates the space and forms of the landscapes, and human interaction within the landscape from farming to leisure. She also celebrates summer in the region through her paintings. With plans to open a new studio from her home in Flinders late 2016, we can look forward to this talented artist to be added to the cultural activities of the area. Jennifer Riddle, local artist and long time exhibitor at Art Red Hill, recently had her artwork recognized by one of our nation’s highest honours – being added to the Parliament House art collection. With only a few pieces purchased every year, this significant collection is considered an assortment of the best of Australian art and includes works by renowned artists Ken Done, Arthur Boyd, Winston Churchill, Luke Roberts, Clifton Pugh, Megan Walch and Magna Carta. And now, they have not one but TWO Jennifer Riddles. Speaking of this great honour and recognition of her work, Jennifer says she feels that Art Red Hill was a launching pad for her career in many ways. “Today, I look fondly back on those first Art Red Hill exhibitions 13 years ago and am reminded of the growth I’ve experienced since, and how important exhibitions like Art Red Hill are to the community”, she said. When asked about how she feels about having her work in the same catalogue as of some of Australia’s most revered artists Jennifer says she finds it both humbling and inspiring. “I can only hope, and of course, paint, passionately towards making their recognition worthy”, she said. The last time I spent two weeks there and it was a life changing experience. The African Children’s Choir supports young Africans who can sing and are keen to learn. Children live in a residential school for six months where they develop their performance and life skills and graduate with a world tour. Ubuntu Africa is the next step for some of these amazing children.” Cate has been fundraising for the African Children’s Choir the last two years and has raised approximately fourteen thousand dollars. “We have a beautiful native garden here in Mt Martha which we open to the public

and hold sausage sizzles on these days” she says. Cate’s also helped organise families on the Peninsula to billet the Ubuntu Africa members. “The Ubuntu Africa group arrives at the Mornington Church of Christ at 5am on April 2 where they’ll meet their host families. They stay with them until April 9. They’ll be singing at the church on Sunday, at Elm Aged Living on Wednesday, and Balcombe Grammar on Friday April 8 with lots of rehearsals in between! “We’ll be taking the group on a tour of the Peninsula and making them feel as welcome as possible”, says Cate. Music on the Hill, the community music event at Red Hill has been going from strength to strength with recent shows selling out to a very special audience of musiclovers here on the Peninsula. A listening audience, attentive, discerning and most of all respectful. MOTH showcases local, national and international singer songwriters and it’s as much about the storytelling as it is about the songs and the playing. During MOTH shows, artists often open their hearts to reveal their innermost secrets and during introductions to songs. It is not unusual to hear the odd ‘shh’ at the back as our respectful audience members remind others that they are all present to hear as well as see the performance. Artists have told us that it can be intimidating to stand in front of such a focused and attentive crowd. But both performers and audience members consistently let us know that MOTH is a unique and enjoyable experience for all. Racecourse to host MS fundraiser BY ANDREA KELLETT

Donna Bradley-Robinson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1994 when she was 29. After recently retiring due to her condition, she’s now facing a new challenge, raising funds for MS. MS is a disease with no cure. Donna’s goal is to raise funds for MS research and services and make a positive difference for MS. The Mornington Racecourse will host a fundraising event on Sunday, May 29, supporting research into multiple sclerosis and support services for people living with the disease. The Scarlet Cup will include local food and wine, silent and live auctions, raffles, a Calcutta horse race, fashions on the field and more. Funds raised will support the MS Ambassador program, MS Support Services, MS Connect programs and new MS research projects. Channel 9 presenter Brodie Harper, who was born and raised on the Mornington Peninsula, will host The Scarlet Cup. The theme is race day attire with a touch of red. Come and support this great cause. Fletcher the Etcher takes flight at Oak Hill Gallery Perry Fletcher is one the world’s finest engravers. His rendition of ‘The Last Supper’ engraved on a single 5’ x 2’ piece of brass which took him six years to complete (1970-76), is coming to Oak Hill Gallery in May as part of his exhibition ‘70 – a Journey So Far Highlighting Diversity’and you won’t want to miss it. This is going to be a retrospective full of detail and surprise. The ‘etcher’ is also a dab hand at painting and writing poetry and Oak Hill’s display of over a hundred pieces of this local Peninsula artist’s work represents a breadth of inspiring creation. The world renowned ‘Last Supper and Borders’ which Fletcher began upon his return from the Vietnam War and completed with intricate borders featuring 370 figures and 500 scrolls is impressive. Locally-grown produce has a brand new identity Mornington Peninsula Produce (MPP) Certified Trade Mark In 2010 Mornington Peninsula Shire undertook an agricultural audit to better understand the scale and diversity of food being grown in the landscape. A key ‘Opportunity for Action’ identified was the development of a Mornington Peninsula regional brand to highlight the many aspects of the region that are appealing to the consumer e.g. quality, freshness, local farmer efforts, food miles, sound environmental management and distribution efficiencies. Thus began the inception to explore the concept of a brand or “trust mark” for the shire’s food producers. 2016…..Locally-grown produce has a brand new identity with the launch of the Mornington Peninsula Produce food provenance brand. The certified trade mark, developed by Mornington Peninsula Shire and the Food Industry Advisory Body, will help consumers confirm the provenance of fresh produce when purchasing from the farm gate, farmers’ markets and retail outlets. The MPP trademark provides consumers with a guarantee of authentic provenance from the Mornington Peninsula with the legal backing of the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC). Furthermore the trademark provides a structure designed to highlight and lift awareness of locally produced foods. It also allows consumers to readily identify locally grown produce through the use of a distinctive logo.

The MPP trademark allows for one brand (MPP) to be developed and promoted that will cover all registered producers, while providing producers with a readily recognised brand underpinned by a set of rules governing its use. A comprehensive MPP trademark website has also been developed. This site provides a searchable directory of all MPP registered producers and their produce as well as providing the food service industry with a guide to seasonally available produce to enhance menu development. The website also provides a snapshot of existing food production allowing for new opportunities to be readily identified by existing and future new producers. It also will enable producers to ‘find each other,’ share information and facilitate business to business leveraging. So look out for products bearing the promotional MPP numbered logo (see example right) which highlights the traceability element as each grower has their own allocated number which can be identified on the website. Les Hunter, Stereo Espresso Les Hunter grew up on the peninsula but spent a chunk of his adult life living in the city, working as a graphic designer. When he was made redundant a few years ago, he toyed with a few business ideas until Stereo Espresso was born. His simple offerings of great coffee and crowd pleasing jaffles have been fuelling Frankstonites for about 10 months now.. Tell us a bit about you and what you do: I live in Frankston with my beautiful wife, Bianca, and our two young boys, Finn & Jonny. In May 2015 I started my first small business (Stereo Espresso), with the sole purpose of bringing quality coffee to the streets of Frankston. I’m able to do so with the awesome work done by Sam and Ryan at Commonfolk

coffee, amazing coffee and super helpful advice. Keep it local and independent peeps! Describe your style: Well, besides the hair, I’d basically describe myself as scruffy. I tend to wear white t-shirts pretty much 100% of the time - which is a poor choice when you spend most of your waking hours behind a coffee machine (they tend to end up beige by day’s end). Apart from that, it’s shorts and thongs. Skinny jeans if it’s wet, (it’s still thongs if it’s wet). Do you think Mornington Peninsula style/fashion has a certain look or feel? Mos def; tight jeans, baggy tees, floppy hats and thongs (not mutually exclusive). What are a couple of your favourite blogs or websites and why?

I tend to peruse music sites like Pitchfork and Noisey, music nerd-out watching reviews on The Needle Drop on the YouTubes. Mostly just Netflix and chill ‘til I fall asleep in the couch. Can you tell us one or two of your fave local spots? One or two? There’s too many on the peninsula! Most days off are spent at Mornington Peninsula Brewery, I’m a massive beer snob and the stuff coming out of Mornington is top notch. Coffee at Commonfolk, Merchant & Maker or Flock. Burgers at Southside Social, pizza at DOC or DoppioZero, threads at Jac n Jean and Caminha. During summer I try and hit the beach with wifey and kids. Frankston and Mt Eliza skate parks are also great for the kids, as too is the Frankston BMX track and PARC

With this mild Autumn weather and the first plantings of our winter veggies in and growing strongly, it is a good time to plan for the addition of a few more deciduous fruit trees. We can grow a wide range of fruit

Deciduous trees do not need to be in full sun all year, so you can be a little flexible and creative in your placement of your trees. So, from mid-Spring through to the start of Autumn you will want a good 6 hours of direct sunlight when the sun is higher in the sky, while during the winter months when the sun is low direct sunlight is not as important. Once you have chosen your site, you may have to adjust the condition of your soil a little depending on where you are. Generally if your soils drain adequately you will be able to grow most of what you want. Apples, pears, quinces and nashi do really well, as do all stone-fruit, persimmon, figs and mulberries. All of these fruit trees can be grown as standards (or standalone trees) but you will need to dedicate a fair bit of space to fit them all in. There are other ways though to be just as productive in your yard while taking up much less space. Two common methods are to grow fruit trees on semidwarf or dwarf rootstocks as standards or as espaliers. The advantages of both being the number and variety of fruit trees you can fit into the same space. We generally recommend semi-dwarf rootstocks for suburban blocks. Espaliering fruit trees along fence-lines or against walls can make use of otherwise under-utilised space and can add interest in your garden while of course providing you with an abundance of fresh produce. You can also grow your climbing and cane fruits in a similar fashion. Trellises erected on fences, walls, sheds

blackberries. These can all be available bare-rooted from around June-August. As you plan where and how to grow more fruiting plants take time to consider how the various spaces you choose will look during the cooler months when the trees lose their foliage. It’s often a good idea to combine perennials with your deciduous plantings to maintain some colour and structure during winter, which may be in the form of evergreen fruiting plants, perennial herbs and flowers or companion plants. You can also use local and native plants species to compliment your fruit trees. While growing deciduous fruit trees and climbers can provide a lot of fruit over the warmer months, let’s not forget about the other fruit trees you can grow. Avocados, tamarillos, and a range of citrus fruits could all occupy some room in your garden and can be highly productive if cared for. And if you have a family there are few things more nourishing for young souls and bodies than to forage in a garden full of goodness. To be able to walk out your door and grab a basketful of fresh, juicy fruit is one of the great pleasures of edible gardening. So replace that old camellia with something that is going to be more productive for you and have a think about other spaces in your yard that can be used to grow more fruiting varieties. You won’t be disappointed.
