It’s the year of the (Fire) Monkey in the Chinese calendar, so let’s take a look at what all the Monkey business is about. The Monkey is the ninth of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. The others are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Rooster, Dog and Pig. I’m a Water Rabbit and apparently kind, affectionate and sometimes too sentimental which is sort of spot on. Your Chinese Zodiac sign is derived from your birth year according to the Chinese lunar calendar – just search say 1972 Chinese Zodiac and see what you come up with! (Each year is also associated with one of five elements: Gold (metal), Wood, Water, Fire and Earth.) Monkey people are known to be clever and skilful, and many Chinese try to give birth in a year of the Monkey because they think it will make their babies smarter. It’s also a good thing to tell a Chinese person that their child ‘is like a monkey’ because the animal is perceived to be clever and powerful. Monkeys are frequently

represented in Chinese fiction (think ‘Monkey King’ Sun Wukong who is the hero of classical novel Journey to the West published in the 16th century) and in Chinese mythology. Some Chinese even pray to the cheeky animal to wish for sons. Monkey people are apparently lively, versatile and innovative but can be jealous, cunning and arrogant. Unexpected fortune is going to find its way to them in 2016, but they are going to have to pay attention not to be too greedy or to gamble it away. They also need to watch out for minor illness and need to take care where food is concerned. They have some lucky colours in white, gold and blue but should avoid black, going east and the numbers, two, five and seven - and watch out for traffic accidents. Relationships are a bit tricky too. Recent Monkey years are 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, next is 2028. The year of the (Fire) Monkey starts on February 8. Let the Monkey business begin!

LIZ ROGERS SPEAKS WITH AJAY BANKS

Bank on it Ajay Banks has pool blue eyes. The kind of eyes that when staring down the barrel of a camera soak up the screen and pull you right in, into a world where you’re not sure you can swim. He’s not like the others, at least that’s what they told him on his recent three month trip to the States where he did acting classes six days a week and made as many contacts as he could. He’s not your typical Aussie actor, no, no – sure he’s got the same work ethic that Australians are known for in LA, but he’s more sensitive and concerned than beef cake and brawn. He’s got accents down pat too. His love affair with the boards began at The Peninsula School in Mt Eliza and he hasn’t looked back. Resolve and a strong belief in self are tools all actors must have, but this twenty-four year old also has the smarts to realise there’s going to be a bunch of rejections and tough skin is a necessary evil of the ever changing script. He explains. “My first play was Cloud Street (Tim Winton) in year ten with Toorak College. I got the lead role and fell in love with the whole scene straight away. It was the first time my parents came to watch me and they knew I was hooked. The drama department at Peninsula really supported me and recognised I had something. I came top thirty in the state in year eleven/ twelve drama and performed a monologue at Hamer Hall in the Arts Centre which got

great a response. But, you know, it’s harder out there in the real world…” although he hasn’t done too badly so far. Firstly he’s represented internationally with Bold Artist Management and is listed on the Star Now website. He’s worked on the independent web series The Happiness Curve, has had small roles on Neighbours, been the lead in a series of educational ‘mocumentaries’ for schools and will be performing in The Normal Heart at the Mechanics Institute in Brunswick from February 11 to 20. Does he enjoy the gypsy life that so often goes hand in hand with an acting career? “We moved up to twenty-five times throughout my childhood so it’s sort of part of my DNA. It’s part of what I love about acting. You get to be anyone and go deep into their psyche while moving around the world (hopefully),” - and I think he might just do that, in fact, bank on it.

ROADSHOW COMES The Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Mornington Peninsula will welcome Lars Tharp, a presenter on the highly regarded BBC’s Antiques Roadshow program, as its first speaker in 2016. Chairman, Janet Glaspole, says that ADFAS is delighted to welcome Lars to the Mornington Peninsula on February 26 when he will tell the fascinating story of London’s Foundling Hospital. It was established in 1739 by the philanthropic sea captain Thomas Coram as a home for the education and maintenance of exposed and deserted young children. Artist William Hogarth had a long association with the Hospital and was a Governor as was composer George Handel. “We are privileged to have an international speaker of this calibre to present our first lecture in 2016” Janet Glaspole said. “Lars will explore how Thomas Coram achieved his aim of providing a refuge for ‘foundlings’, and for babies at risk of infanticide, and the part Hogarth and Handel played in this. Ditch the festive-season hangover and take a pause for a cause Alcohol and sugar consumption in Australia continue to rank highly on a global stage, with the average Aussie consuming three times the daily recommended limit of sugar, and double the average alcohol consumption - with 12.2 litres annually. As the hangover from Christmas indulgence sets in, many Aussies will be casting their sights to the monthlong pause from alcohol and sugar, as febfast 2016 returns. The challenge, which sees Australia turn to clean living in February, is powered by Youth Support + Advocacy Service (YSAS) and since its inception in 2008, has raised over $7 million. In 2016, YSAS are hoping to see even more Australians take on the challenge to reign in harmful habits, while raising funds for disadvantaged youth. Encouraging Australians to take stock of their health and bad habits for nearly a decade, febfast’s 2015 enrolments saw over 6000 participants commit to 672 hours without alcohol or sugar, with ninety two percent still maintaining these healthy habits today. While Aussies may be guilty of over-indulging in sugary treats and booze, research also shows that alcohol is an area of greatest concern for fun loving Aussies, with two in five indicating they want to cut back. And it’s exactly these individuals that febfast encourages to take on the challenge, according to febfast National Director, Laura Callow. “We know that February is a time when many Aussies are settling back into their routines - with the festive season just about done. This is also a time when people are setting their sights to the year ahead and wanting to embrace any of those new year’s resolutions made, but not yet implemented! “From those who’ve participated, we know that febfast

offers benefits beyond just the month of February - with the act of self-control inspiring thousands of people to continue this way of life for some time to come.” Whether ongoing or simply for the 29 days of February, research shows that as little as one month off booze can have significant health benefits, with a study by University College London seeing improvements in participants’ blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and a lowered risk of developing diabetes and liver disease. This has also been echoed by febfast 2015 participants, who reported a transformative effect on their lives: • 62% said they have lost weight during the month •8 1% have saved money to invest in something special like a holiday •8 6% have become more aware of how their habits impact their health • 60% are more productive at work • 44% say they slept better during the month, giving them more energy to make that early gym class! • A whopping 85% of registrants completed the fast “We know that Australians love a good challenge for a good cause , we are a nation of fun-running, mountain biking, mud clad warriors when it comes to supporting some of our country’s most disadvantaged people, so we know we can count on the goodwill of Aussies to support our specialist programs and health workers assisting disadvantaged youth,” says Callow. febfast participants won’t have to do it alone, with the organisation offering participants helpful survival tips, febfast friendly restaurants and bars, and “time out” passes if you have a special occasion where sugar or alcohol is unavoidable. I’ve always admired the art of fencing. The way opponents dance with each other, the gentleness of movement yet brutality of being hit.

This is a sport full of contradictions, strength and strategy and has its origins in the skills taught to warriors when thrusting (a Roman Centurion wielding a gladius) or slashing (the British Cavalry slashing sabres) weapons. That was then. This is now. The modern day fencer is elegant, stylish and has garnered the expertise in tipscoring weapons, foils (descendent of the light court sword used by nobility to train

for duels) and epee. Touché Fencing Club in Mt Martha aims to provide training and competition for those interested in learning this traditional yet progressive sport in an encouraging and safe environment. Predominantly focusing on epee (duelling sword) which is a simple weapon that can be mastered by any keen sportsman or woman from the age of ten upwards, this family friendly club has two coaches on Wednesday and Thursday evenings who provide constant feedback. Veteran fencer Danny Robson is the winner of the Australian Men’s Veteran National title and Murray Thompson has a physiotherapy background which means

both men bring different skills to this new fencing club’s program. "Fencing develops a strong sense of ethics, respect and self-worth", says club member Paul Baker. "Competing is fun, and it is great as a parent to watch your child develop into an agile and strong person who is respectful yet determined. Touché Fencing Club provides all the gear you’ll need to get started (like uniforms, masks and blades) and you can come and try if you are uncertain the sport is for you. There’s an introduction to fencing the first Thursday of every month and

Jess Jones of Soar Collective and The Startup Business Coach Tell us a bit about you and what you do: My partner, 3 year old and I moved to the Peninsula 2 years ago. I was in St Kilda West for 6 years prior and while I loved the cafes, restaurants, the beach and the excitement, the lifestyle down here is something else. There’s a real sense of community here, which you just don’t get in the city. In May 2014 from above a Mornington café, I launched my business, the Soar Collective. I’m incredibly passionate about empowering, supporting and connecting women in business. And we’re fortunate to have so many talented businesswomen on the Peninsula. Things you love: Coffee, summer, reading business books, learning, BBQs, music and dancing, being near the water (even though I’m not much of a swimmer!), spending time with friends and family Describe your style: When I’m working (hosting Soar Collective events or attending

meetings and workshops) you can find me in black with a statement necklace. I only own 2 pairs of heels, so I alternate between them. When I’m not working, it’s all about singlets, comfy dresses and t-shirts (love a good stripe) with denim. Can’t live without black or print leggings too and my denim shirts (I own 3 for different looks and occasions!) Do you think Mornington Peninsula has a certain style: Yes, I think it’s relaxed and comfortable, but stylish. Loving the navy and white stripes and the coastal look I’m seeing a bit of at the moment, with splashes of copper or gold jewellery, denim and tan sandals. What’s new in your world: My second child will be born midFeb! While I’m nervous about the idea of running 2 businesses with a 3 year old and newborn, I’m also up for the challenge and curious to see how I’ll handle it.

Business-wise, it’s a really exciting time and it’s going to be a big year for us. We’ve just launched Soar Collective in Berwick with plans to be in a third location mid-year. And I’ve started writing the first book of my series for women in business. I’ve got a few speaking gigs lined up and will be writing regular articles for a few publications (including Mornington Peninsula Magazine) this year too as The Start Up Business Coach. Toorak College has a strong focus on building community and fostering a sense of wellbeing and belonging. With the understanding that physical and mental challenges promote wellbeing, and working together as part of a group fosters team building and a greater sense of belonging and connectedness, Year 10 is being shaped as the Year of Challenge. Currently Year 10 students participate in the Challenge Program through their Health and PE classes. This year a team of girls competed in the Hillary Challenge, Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ultimate inter-school adventure event conducted over three days. Toorak Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all-girl team has an accomplished track record in this event, which is one of very few where girls and boys teams can compete against each other and mixed teams on a level footing. Year 10 girls also participated in the iconic 404km Mighty Murray Paddle, a five day kayaking experience on the Murray. Toorak College had a strong presence on the river in the 1980s and 1990s so many people are excited to see the school back. The team were lucky enough to have the support of marathon legends Bill Robinson and Mark Thornthwaite, the Murray Marathon Founder. FEBRUARY 2016 (51)

Additionally, eleven Year 10 students went on a two day adventure hiking through beautiful countryside climbing to the summit of Mt Feathertop. This challenge builds on the skills the girls have developed with the Year 7 and 8 Camp program and Beyond Boundaries in Year 9. This year marked the tenth year that Toorak College has entered the Great Victorian Bike Ride. Twenty nine girls from a variety of year levels rode the 533 kilometre journey which took them around the Central Goldfields of Victoria. Camping and enjoying the hospitality of rural towns such as Avoca, Dunolly, Inglewood, Heathcote and Castlemaine added a social aspect to this physical challenge. These challenges are in addition to the World Challenge adventure in Sri Lanka which is open to girls in Years 10 to 12 and involves completing service learning projects and trekking for three weeks. Altogether these add up to a suite of challenges to suit every girl and every level of fitness. Toorak College has the all-girl advantage. It is the school where you can be brilliant, be you! Growing up in our own sleepy beach town of Shoreham, she once felt most comfortable in the slow and the quiet. Ruby’s love of music started at a young age, dabbling in a variety of instruments such as cello and piano, and now settling with guitar and voice as her musical vehicle. After completing high school she took a few years off and found herself writing and playing music increasingly often, developing her own sound and spending time with fellow musicians. A decision to study at RMIT took her to Melbourne’s northern suburbs, where she now calls home. In the last year she has been playing alongside friend Harrison Storm in his own project, occasionally in his 6 piece band and more commonly in a trio along with Justin Lewis. Ruby talks “I grew up in Shoreham and lived there until I was 20. I now live in Fitzroy North.” Ruby continues “I started playing music with Harrison this year and have been involved in recording the EP and live shows. We play as a band for major shows, but more commonly as a trio with Justin Lewis. We have played at a range of Melbourne venues such as the Toff, the Evelyn and Howler, and also did a short tour to Sydney in August (trio). “ Ruby is one of the featured performers at The Peninsula Picnic Sunday March 20 which will be at Mornington Racing Club. Welcome to the Wooding Galaxy Sarah Wooding is gorgeous. She’s fifteen, has long lusturous locks that stay where they’re supposed to and smart, smart eyes. This Mornington High School student’s favourite subject is science and she hopes to go into gene research one day, but for now, she’s happy hanging out with her Kelpie Jarrah and oh – did I mention – being a finalist in the Miss Teen Galaxy Australia?

Modelling sort of just happened for this sociable and athletic teenager. "I was at the Melbourne Show a couple of years ago and there was a stall where you could have your photo taken and enter a competition. I came second and joined Bettina Modelling Agency," she explains. It took her about twelve months to get a job but that didn’t faze her at all. "My first job was unpaid. A university student needed someone to model for their portfolio. I’ve since been on a billboard in Epping, a paddle board for Tourism Victoria, in a catalogue and am up for a spot in Emo The Musical" - which will be a feature length version of the 2013 short film from writer-director Neil Triffett and funded by Screen Australia.

So what about Miss Teen Galaxy which "provides the motivation and tools for all delegates to become the best possible version of themselves, to become role models to their peers, their family and their community", (Australia Galaxy Pageants Director, Lucinda Ferguson). "All I did was enter my details and attach some photos. Apparently they only accept entrants who have potential and I was one of them! I went to the first round of competitions in November in 2015 and got fast tracked through to the National final in Queensland in April. There are three different categories – evening wear, fashion and swimwear. You have to do a catwalk parade and an on the spot interview which is a bit intimidating. There’s a lot of charity work involved as well", she continues. Sarah held a lolly jar guessing game and a high tea event at Benito's in Mt Eliza in late January where she auctioned Michael Clarke’s autographed cricket gear. All funds go to the Make a Wish Foundation. So, does she think she’ll win? Her sponsors Bowman & Company Real Estate and Hartfords Hairdressing in Mornington do. "It’s all a bit of fun. U3A Artists Capture Summertime Beauty of Mornington Visitors wandering through the many beauty spots of Mornington this summer would have noticed University of the Third Age artists with their palettes settled beneath shady trees or nestled in the banks of native hedgerow.

Art Outside Classes offering the freedom to work within the natural environment were part of a new, U3A Mornington, Summertime Program. Unique, local settings such as Mornington Mills Beach, Beleura House and Gardens and historic Oak Hill Gallery provided inspirational places for enjoyable learning, painting and drawing experiences. In mid-January, the day’s class started with an excellent talk and demonstration by Australian artist, Carolyn Harrington on the topic of painting with acrylics at Oak Hill Gallery.

Working with oils, acrylics, watercolour or pencils, artists of all abilities, were then guided by experienced U3A art tuitors Jan Oliver and Maryanne MacPhee to select their own space and focus of painting. As the class began, they talked about the many artistic advantages of working outside. Beginning with just a few brush strokes, Margaret Thompson, influenced by the great William Turner, said "…you do not need to get stuck on too much detail to begin with…you pick up inspiration from your surroundings; the natural shapes, colours, textures, light and mood that stay with you and continue to inspire your work until it is finally completed." One of the more advanced U3A artists, Michael Lord explained how he had ‘discovered’ his talent for drawing following a busy career and life in South Africa and Australia. He chose to draw a rusty lock on a very old wooden gate post and fence that separated the 1895 Italianate style homestead of Oak Hill Gallery from the farm sheds. Michael explained, "I like detail. By focussing on the old gate bolt, I hope to invoke the much broader meaning of the drawing - its historical context and sense of agelessness." Typical of U3A members, Michael said, "I have always enjoyed art but never had the opportunity to learn how to draw until I retired and attended art classes at U3A Mornington." Over the course of 2016, U3A Mornington will be celebrating 25 years of enjoyable learning, courses, community and social activities. And we are still growing! This will be the tenth annual MS Melbourne Cycle event and is shaping up to be just as successful as the previous ones. It causes extreme fatigue and chronic pain plus vision, cognitive, continence and mobility issues, and although not all sufferers will be left with a permanent disability, the fallout from such a pervasive disease is often devastating. MS Ambassador and Mt Eliza local Steve Van Ruyven explains. “I was diagnosed with MS twenty years ago and life has never been the same. It has taken me years to learn how to live with it. I had to stop work because I was constantly exhausted and we even moved to the country for ten years. But I am one of the lucky ones. I can still ride a bike and go for long walks. What I do seems to work for me but everyone is different. You know four people are diagnosed every working day.”

Steve was asked to become a MS Ambassador five years ago and now spends his time letting other people know about the disease through information sessions and fundraising events. It will be the sixth time he’s donned red and ridden the 50km circuit which starts and ends at Flemington Racecourse, but you don’t have to ride the whole distance. There are shorter routes! “There’s no cure, but there are better drugs to help you cope. The MS Melbourne Cycle day is uplifting for families and sufferers. Free To Shine expands! Local Mornington non-profit Free To Shine are expanding their education program. The main office in Siem Reap has enrolled over 550 rural Cambodian girls into their program, which puts at-risk girls back in school to stop them from being targeted by sex traffickers. They are now in the beginning stages of opening a second office in Battambang, Cambodia which is close to the Thai border. The organisation has had a number of successful fundraising events in Mornington, including the wildly successful Mornington Masquerade party which raised over $6,500 for girls on the program. They are now looking for donations to replicate their program in Battambang after completing extensive research into the area last year. The research into the region found that the education program in Siem Reap would be as effective in Battambang in making girls less vulnerable to people traffickers and that they would be able to give rural girls there a brighter future. Education has been the main focus of Free To Shine’s programs and has been

a solution to helping girls gain better employment when they leave school as well as becoming better leaders. Family circumstances in Cambodia can sometimes make going to school very difficult. Elderly or injured family members can mean that children are required to work in order to feed the family, lack of transport can stop girls from getting to school over dangerous roads, and the importance of going to school is often understated, particularly for girls. By giving the girls on our program a bike, a school uniform and school supplies, Free To Shine helps to lessen the burden that school puts on the family. Each family is different and circumstances change from village to village. Education Outreach Officers visit each family regularly and determine how the girls are going in school and whether or not they need any further assistance. Free To Shine is committed to preventing girls from being put into the sex trafficking industry and putting them back in school. To find out more, check out freetoshine.org

Surfs up with DSAMP - AGAIN We love the surfing events that DSAMP (Disabled Surfing Association Mornington Peninsula) put on and January 16 was right up there with the best. 296 volunteers helping the 113 surfers with a disability, move to and from the water’s edge in beach wheel chairs and people being lifted on to long boards excited to hit the waves with ‘smiles on their dials’. This is what community, commitment and diversity looks like. President of DSAMP Ash Gardner

explains. “Our first event in 2012 had one hundred and eighty four volunteers and two surfers. You can see how it’s grown. We now have thirty on our committee and 2015 saw a live auction of eighteen surfboards (supplied by Trigger Bros) in AFL colours signed by the players at Baha in Rye’ - they work closely with the First Reef Project group who have really smart fundraising ideas. ‘We also ran a three part program with Frankston High School in disability awareness and are part of the Community Boardwalk project at Point Leo.” The Point Leo foreshore committee, surf lifesaving club, Mornington Peninsula Shire and local MP Greg Hunt are all contributing to the project.

Jackson explains “When we see a lost dog or cat, our natural instinct may be to take it home and search for the owner. But we have to be careful, especially with dogs who may be scared, disoriented and hungry. A dog may bite to protect itself. If you see a lost pet, take some good photos and only approach if you

are 100% certain the animal will not bite. Never approach a dog or cat if the animal growls or takes a stance position. EMPLOYEES COME TOGETHER AT SOUTH EAST WATER Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Lisa Neville officially opened South East Water’s new state of the art headquarters in Frankston on December 14. Ms Neville and Member for Frankston Paul Edbrooke were joined by members of the South East Water Board, including the recently appointed Chair, Lucia Cade. The new building and relocation of operations to Frankston will result in a reduction in costs for South East Water, a better service for customers, environmental benefits and an on-going boost for the local economy. The new building features: • technologies to provide a more efficient and better service with less disruptions for customers, • reduced operating costs, including through consolidation offices; • leading environmental features; and • a substantial boost to the local economy, including through procurement of local services and products, estimated at up to $132 million per year. By bringing together more than 700 employees in the central Frankston location, local businesses are already

experiencing a boost in trade and South East Water’s on-going procurement of good and services is expected to provide vital job and business opportunities in the region. Environmental features of the new building include rainwater capture and storage for toilet flushing and garden irrigation and LED lighting systems. The building also features new technologies to improve customer service through better communication systems – including a new text message capability for use when there are unplanned disruptions to supply. A central part of South East Water’s relocation strategy is the establishment of strong relationships with local communities and businesses – including a new Shared Value program in which employees team with local community organisations, schools and business to drive improved education, recreation and skills development outcomes in the area. Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Lisa Neville said, “This is an exciting new era for South East Water with a new headquarters and Board in place to meet the challenges of the future such as climate change and population growth.” “I want to see our water corporations play a leading role in their communities and it’s great to see South East Water

Chemical peels are specifically designed to remove the top layers of the skin to reveal new, regenerated skin. Chemical

peels are a useful and economical addition to almost any skincare regime. They are a safe and effective treatment and when used regularly they can dramatically improve the texture and luminosity of the skin. What can peels be used for? Chemical peels can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions including acne, sun damage, pigmentation and fine wrinkles. What peels are available at Peninsula Dermatology? Peninsula Dermatology has a variety of superficial and medium depth chemical peels. Our dermatologists and cosmetic

nurses will tailor the type and strength of peel to your individual needs. In general the deeper peels result in greater clinical improvement but are associated with longer downtime and risk of side effects. For this reason we recommend that peels be performed under the supervision of an experienced health practitioner. How often should chemical peels be performed? It’s your community-based palliative care service. Our aim is to provide home-based palliative care that optimises quality of life and honours the hope for comfort, choice, dignity and peace. Why is it important? There are many people in our community who are living every day with a life threatening illness and who need support to be able to live their lives as normally as they can. Dying, as with living, should include choices such as being supported to stay in one’s own home surrounded by family and friends but many of us don’t have a big enough family or sufficient friends to give us the care we need. PHH’s palliative care is there to help. Our team includes: Specialist Palliative Care Nurses, Palliative Medical Consultant, Counsellor-Case Workers, Psychologist, Spiritual Care Worker, Art Therapist, Music Therapist and an invaluable group of Client Care Volunteers. Sweet sounds of success at The Peninsula School The Peninsula School is kicking off 2016 on a high note. With its Dux for 2015, Ngoc Hai Chau Vo, achieving the top ATAR Score of 99.95 there is a lot to celebrate at Peninsula. While the view in the rear view mirror is impressive, its 2016 they have their eye on. A new Year 5 to 8 Program, Becoming Me, will commence this year designed specifically for students at this stage of their life. Principal, Stuart Johnston

‘Nesting boxes for Eastern Rosellas and Wood Ducks’ Artificial tree hollows are very important to the conservation of Australian ‘hollow nesting’ animals. Old natural hollows in trees take hundreds of years to form.

There is lots of competition at this time of year between bats, possums, gliders, owls, parrots, ducks, kookaburras, rosellas and kingfishers as well as numerous species of frogs, snakes and skinks searching for the few nesting spots available. We decided to help our local wildlife. We worked with (from L-R) Sean, Bertil, Paul, Bill, Mic, Richard, Tony and Geoff, all members from the Mornington men’s shed to construct nesting boxes for our local Eastern Rosellas and Wood Ducks. Using marine ply kindly donated by Mornington Bunnings, we got to practice the new skills we learned from our great mentors when making the bat

After lots of drilling and screwing the timber templates together, we added some shredded bark and wood shavings into the bottom of the parrot box to make it attractive to the nesting adult Eastern Rosellas, who partner for life. Between 4-8 eggs are laid by the female rosella who is fed by the male while she incubates the eggs. These birds forage on the ground for seeds, grasses and insects and in the trees for nectar. We aim to plant native grasses and shrubs under the nesting boxes at Tony O’Connors local Landcare property and within our school to attract more ground feeding native birds. We can’t wait to sit our nesting boxes snuggly in the forks of trees, we will secure them by threading wire through a piece of old garden hose to attach to the girth of the trees. We also constructed two much larger nesting boxes for Australian wood ducks to move into, they are often found in grasslands, open woodlands, wetlands and pastures foraging for grasses, clover, other herbs and occasionally insects. They lay up to ten eggs in tree hollows near water. We plan to place the duck nesting boxes around the wetlands at Tony O’Connor’s, bordering Balcombe creek in Mt Martha where we have been working as part of the year 7/8 ‘Real Time Learning Program’ each Thursday

Happy Birthday in Heaven Not Long Now until the show! Melissa Jane is a singer-songwriter based right here on the Mornington Peninsula. ‘Happy Birthday in Heaven’ is her debut single. Melissa wrote this song to help people deal with their grief after a loved one has passed, on the anniversary of their birthdate. She hopes that this song will help people get through the day, when they are remembering their loved one. Melissa started writing the lyrics to ‘Happy Birthday in Heaven’, after her own experience with grief and loss. The focus of the song is to help others who have lost someone that they love. A percentage of all profits from the sale of the single ‘Happy Birthday in Heaven’ will be donated to ‘Too Beautiful For Earth Inc.’, a Victorian not for profit organisation established to provide information to

those who have been touched by the loss of a much-wanted baby through miscarriage. ‘Happy Birthday in Heaven’s’ release date in online stores was on Thursday January 14, 2016. Melissa’s passion is music and writing lyrics that people can relate to. Her influences include other singer/ songwriters including Tori Amos, Alicia Keys, and Missy Higgins. Blues at The Briars, the Peninsula’s Premier Blues Festival returns on March 5 for its fourth year at the Historic Homestead at the Briars Mount Martha. The festival will feature the cream of Australia’s deep pool of Blues talent. An attractive nude in a bedroom environment is an often contemplated image. Enhance the scene with sleek silk sheets or rumpled bed linen, a lady or man in repose and a sense of sensuality is immediately conveyed. Learn the skills you see on stage

Have you ever wanted to learn from the stars you see on the stage? In 2016, Frankston Arts Centre is presenting all kinds of workshops from drumming to dance to acting, delivered by the professional artists who will be starring in the performances. In March, the internationallyacclaimed Brazilian Afro-fusion band Ara Ketu arrives on Aussie soil to perform at Frankstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own Ventana Fiesta. Before they step on the Frankston Arts Centre stage on March 10, they are offering two workshops

at 6pm. Choose from either drumming or samba and learn the beats and moves that were made famous on the streets of

Rio. Tickets are only $10 if you have a performance ticket to the show at 8pm or $15 for the workshop only. On Tuesday 22 March, the actors from the smash production 4000 Miles are offering a workshop for students in Year 11 and 12. Learn contemporary acting skills and storytelling techniques from members of the touring company and then see them putting these skills to impressive effect as they perform this award-winning play about a grandmother and the extended stay by her couch-surfing grandson. The 10am workshop is free with a performance ticket to the show at 8pm. In April, young aspiring dancers will get the opportunity to work with the cast from Vincent. The LissaJane Dance Company will deliver a workshop in exhilarating contemporary dance on Saturday 2 April at 11am & 1.30pm prior to the performance at 7.30pm. Crazy In Love

People fall in love all the time and they go crazy doing it! Research by the British Psychological Society has revealed that the brain ‘in a state of love’ and ‘a state of mental illness’ shows a ‘considerable overlap.’ What that means I suppose is that when love comes knocking on your door, it is impossible to think clearly or behave in the same way that you did before. So let’s explore this strange word ‘love’ and what it does to us. Most of us have felt it - that surge of dizziness, sweat clinging to our palms, the heart pounding pushing blood away from our stomachs so the big butterflies begin to flap. Apparently it only takes a fifth of a second to fall in love, thanks to the chemicals released from our brains, and the sense of euphoria that comes with the ‘love drug’ is extreme. The chemicals dopamine, oxytocin and phenethylamine are potent bed fellows and give us the overwhelming urge to attach to someone. The bonding chemical oxytocin makes us enjoy sex (thank you very much) and is designed to keep us together for as long as possible to have babies! Very sneaky! Valentine’s Day (or Saint Valentine’s Day) is the time when all this body and brain chaos is celebrated worldwide. The origins of the day aren’t clear but some sources believe it comes from the story of the martyred Roman priest St Valentine. Regardless, Valentine’s

Lazy Joe ain’t so lazy as he now does fresh gummy shark and chips as well as his normal pizza menu. As a traditional pizzeria Lazy Joe’s in Safety Beach ticks all the boxes but the big surprise is when I heard about the gummy shark and chip pack for $12.50, I thought I better go and see for myself. Beer battered gummy, steakhouse chips, house made tartar sauce and lemon wedges. Probably the best kept secret this side of Mt Martha, the serve is generous and tasty. News from our Vignerons Annual Piers & Pinots Sunday March 13 at Flinders Foreshore from 12 - 3pm Mornington Peninsula is uniquely situated with 3 breezes delivered via Port Phillip Bay, Western Port and Bass Strait. The effect creates ideal conditions for the region’s pinots, wines with outstanding flavours, balanced natural acidity and fine tannins. Twenty two Mornington Peninsula Pinot producers will gather by the sea at the annual Labour Day weekend showcase to taste a range of Pinots along with local fine food and music. A wonderful range of wines are available to taste , or to buy a glass to enjoy along with a seaside lunch. The annual Piers & Pinots Yacht Race is also held on the day, run by Flinders Yacht Club Mornington Peninsula Piers & Pinots is held at Flinders foreshore. Each ticket includes a complimentary Riedel tasting glass, tasting notes and all wine tastings between 12noon - 3pm. Picnic style food will be available for purchase also. We proceeded to amble along a purpose built walking track to Red Hill South. After stopping at Red Hill we walked along a beautiful historic rail trail to a private vineyard to meet winemakers showcasing a range of their wines and then down to Stonier and Merricks General Wine Store in Merricks. Join local vignerons to celebrate the end of the 2015 harvest from Red Hill to Merricks...around 10 kilometres. return to Lindenderry by bus. Buses will be available to return walkers to Lindenderry from Merricks from 12-3pm. • start the walk after checking in

at Lindenderry (please confirm instructions on your ticket when booked) - Arthurs Seat Road, Red Hill, at 9am or 10am. •w alk a couple of kilometers to Red Hill to enjoy a sparkling wine and morning canapes at Red Hill Epicurean at the start of the Merricks track- then along the way stop at a vineyard adjacent to the walking track and taste wines from Paringa Estate with a sample of food to match from their Chef • c ontinue on to Stonier Wines and Merricks General Wine Store to taste a selection of their wines (with a couple of surprises along the way) • F inish between 12 and 3pm at Merricks and return by bus to Lindenderry to close the day with a relaxed snack Bookings are essential, tickets sales online are $50pp *Please note, the walking track from Red Hill to Merricks is quite well maintained but good walking shoes are recommended. Other than the odd muddy patch in wet seasons, the track provides for an easy walk which is all on a level or slightly down hill terrain. There is one steep but very short up hill section mid way. Wise up on waste Mornington Peninsula Magazine is serious about

being green, clean and living sustainably. So is Frankston City Council. Their Follow Your Waste Tour late last year saw participants take a guided tour of the Polytrade Material Recycling Facility which is the leading recycling company across Australasia. The Polytrade Material Recycling Facility sorts and processes more than 400,000 tonnes of recyclables each year across its fifteen Material Recovery Facilities. This Australian owned business is focused on generating environmental, economic and social benefits through its recycling of ‘fully commingled’ (all recyclables together as in household waste) recyclables. Think paper, plastic, glass and metals. Tour members also dropped in on the Suez Hallam

Road Landfill which provides ‘responsible environmental management’ of waste that can’t be reused or recycled from households, businesses and industry in the eastern and southeastern suburbs. From this initial tour, here are some of the free environmental events Frankston City Council has organised for the first half of 2016 to help increase awareness about ways in which residents can reduce their amount of landfill waste. First off on February 6 is a Detox Your Home event that educates residents on how to safely and easily dispose of potentially dangerous household chemicals. This is a must for all residents who are concerned about where their unwanted cleaning products end up! March 6 sees various locations around Frankston become part of Clean up Australia Day where residents can get together to help clean up their local environment

With a fairly mild summer and our gardens producing an abundance of beautifully ripe home grown fruit and veggies, many of you may find you have more produce than you can use for your daily meals. This is where the real beauty of growing your own food begins to shine. Preserving! While there may be loads of meals you can prepare with your abundant crops of tomatoes, basil, zucchini, cucumbers, chillis, eggplant and capsicum, there are many preserving techniques to help you enjoy your plentiful supplies later in the year; pickling, freezing, dehydrating and bottling just to name a few. Tomatoes are easy. Making sauces, pastes and jams are on most home-growers radars. But simply storing your whole or chopped tomatoes can allow much more flexibility for many months to come. And if you have planted a good crop (say 20-30 plants) you will likely have enough to take you close or through to the next harvest in 2017. Abundant herbs can be quickly transformed into pesto’s, whacked in the freezer and thawed as

required throughout the year for cooking or snacking. Zucchini’s (and cucumbers) have well earned reputations for overproducing with most people choosing to let them rot on the ground after getting sick of too many zucchini meals over summer. How often though have you wanted to use zucchini or cucumber when they are not in the garden though? Pickling both of these fruits in various ways is fantastic, as is making and freezing zucchini soups, slow cooking or dehydrating zucchini chips and juicing both if you still have too many. Eggplant and capsicum are always well enjoyed in many ways during the warm seasons weather it’s cooked on the barbie, made into dips or just eaten raw. If enough is enough, then think about charring them and storing them in oil to be used all year as condiments and additions to a wide range of meals. And as for chillis. Well if you have more than one good sized plant in this season you’ll likely be wondering what to do with the excess long after the plant has withered and died. Stringing chilli’s up to dry and hanging alongside your garlic in the kitchen

will give you two very versatile and well used meal additions. However, chilli pastes and sauces are a must have in the fridge and cupboard for any spicy food loving family. And, depending on the variety of chilli you have grown, will provide you with many spiced up meals through the year. Doing a bit of reading on preserving will surely give you limitless ideas on how to continue to enjoy your home grown harvests over the coming year, and given a little time and creativity your pantry will be filled with many delicious alternatives for your already fabulous produce.
