Hugh Jackman surprised and delighted both crew and passengers when he boarded the Bay Fish N Trips vessel at Mornington harbour to enjoy a spot of fishing with his two children. The X-Men and Wolverine star was blessed with great weather, dolphin sightings and even managed to hook a few flathead while spending the day on the local charter boat. “It took me about two days to come down (from the high),” said Sandra Watt from Bay Fish N Trips, who runs the business with husband Stuart Maconachie. “Hugh is the most genuine, down-to-earth person. “He talked to everyone on board and he even posed for a few photos at the end.” Despite his colossal fame, Ms Watt said Jackman and his

family were unaccompanied, kept a low profile and that the star even called ahead to book the trip himself. Jackman later posted a photo to his 21 million Facebook followers describing the amazing day he’d had aboard the Plover. The Hollywood A-lister is believed to be in Australia over winter while his children Oscar and Ava, 15 and 11, enjoy their US school holidays. It is understood Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness have relatives in Mt Eliza. The star has also been spotted shopping at Ritchies and stopping for selfies with fans. BY KRISTY MARTIN

Everybody has a story. Just ask Mornington Peninsula woman Kris McGhee. Not only has she herself led a fascinating life (think musical theatre, travel and animal activism), but Kris also meets and interviews people from all walks of life for her Facebook page ‘Humans of the Peninsula’. Based on the incredibly popular Humans of New York, which now has over eight million followers worldwide, Kris says Humans of the Peninsula was created in May 2014 as a ‘social experiment’. She wanted to showcase the diversity of the locals and to highlight the vast array of interesting achievements being carried out in the community. With a degree in Social Anthropology, Kris has always been fascinated by people (she likes to write down snippets of conversations and collects them for a memoir she is writing). Kris started Humans of the Peninsula by interviewing her friends and asking them just one question - what they are passionate about or what makes them happy. The page has since gained momentum and now has over 3600 followers. Kris trawls through social media to locate her interview subjects but many are discovered through word of mouth, while some also contact her. She admits that a few have been controversial, but her initial worries about attracting negativity, like the global Humans pages tend to do, have been unfounded. She has only ever deleted two comments in the entire 15 months. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” Kris says. The site has taken on a new format since its humble beginnings, in that Kris now asks her subjects various questions, including how and when they came to

AUGUST 2015 (45)

peninsula, what they do for a living and what they are passionate about. Or she simply lets the person tell their own story in their own words. “I find it very hard to edit the stories, because everything is relevant and everything is important.” Her subjects have included artists, musicians, writers, cooks, philanthropists, new business owners, a priest, people who have experienced grief or loss and a woman awaiting a double lung transplant. One post about a young soldier in Iraq was viewed by 20,000 people worldwide. A mother of two, Kris works as a travel agent at Sorrento Travel and Cruise

She is also part of a musical theatre group, the Rosebud Astral Theatre Society, which puts her in touch with interesting and creative personalities. “There are some people I am continually hassling to tell their story because they are so interesting.” She is also involved with the peninsula chapter of the Victorian Marine Animal Defenders (VMAD) Conservation Society, which aims to protect the unique marine wildlife living in Port Philip Bay. While Kris has been blown away by the success of Humans of the Peninsula, she hopes to continue telling people’s stories well into the future. Dishing Up a good story By Jane Hone

When Merricks North resident (and highly successful author) Garry Disher moved to the Mornington Peninsula over 20 years ago, he expected to write crime fiction set in a city. Instead, he found himself using the peninsula as a backdrop. The catalyst was a string of shocking crimes committed in the Frankston area just weeks after Garry moved down. The killer (later found to be Paul Charles Denyer) had savagely murdered three young women and was still at large. Garry went into a Hastings milk bar one day and overheard a group of mothers talking

about their concern for their daughters. It was then, in the context of community fear, that Garry realised he wanted “to write about a small community instead of another big, anonymous city.” Growing up in country South Australia also meant that Garry was comfortable writing about a rural area. The result was the popular Challis and Destry series of police procedural novels. According to Garry, there are several factors that make the peninsula a unique and ideal setting for crime stories: “It’s a distinctive place geographically, with the sea on both sides—it’s a beautiful place, but there are also very big extremes of rich and poor. “Some of the old peninsula towns like Mornington, Hastings and Rosebud have

doubled in size in the 20 years I’ve been down here, which causes a headache for the police, social services… “It’s an interesting area in which I could explore things like social tensions.” Garry returns this year to his beloved Wyatt novels—so-called because they centre on a calamitous professional criminal called Wyatt —with the eighth instalment: The

Heat. He describes his Wyatt books as less an exploration of social tensions and “much more based in caper novels.” In The Heat, Garry promises that oldfashioned thing we all long for: a good story. The Heat (Text Publishing) is due out for publication on October 21.

MURAL BRIGHTENS MT ELIZA BUSINESS A colourful mural painted by some creative students has helped liven up a Mt Eliza business. The side wall of the Fins and Scales fish and chip shop was given an artistic makeover by students from Mt Eliza Secondary College. With an underwater theme spanning almost 10m wide, the mural was painted by Year 9 and 10 art students, under the guidance of teacher Sue Holderness and Red Hill artist Michael Leeworthy. The mural was facilitated by the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce after it received two arts grants for murals to be installed at businesses that have been subjected to graffiti attacks.

At just 14, Fox DeRoche is fast making a name for himself as one of the peninsula’s hottest rising music stars. A naturally talented singer and guitarist, Fox won last year’s ‘The Voice of Frankston’ competition, scoring a recording session, music video and photo shoot in his prize pack. With a quiet confidence and maturity beyond his years, Fox says he taught himself to play guitar, writes his own songs and performs regular gigs at Baha Tacos in Rye with his mate Zepp. The Dromana College Year 8 student also makes good money busking at the Balnarring shops. Fox names Ed Sheeran as a major influence, but performs everything from Queen and David Bowie to Outkast and Britney Spears. Born into a creative family consisting of writers, film directors and musicians, Fox

began bashing around on the drums at age four and then took up piano lessons at seven. In Year 2 at Balnarring Primary, he started singing and teaching himself basic guitar chords. He has only recently commenced guitar lessons, which he hopes will increase his knowledge of the instrument. In 2012, Fox appeared on the revamp of the ’80s TV show Young Talent Time after making a shortlist of 40 from 20,000 kids who auditioned nationwide. He was treated like a rockstar for a few days, getting flown Sydney for the program, where he performed The White Stripes’ hit Seven Nation Army. A few years later he decided to try out for The Voice of Frankston and won his age category in the local talent quest. “I was really surprised because there were a lot of really talented people,” he says. He used his recording session to lay

down an original track called ‘Rosey Cheeks’ and says he writes songs about everything from his favourite films to complex emotional issues and experiences. Fox is unsure where his career will take him, but we are sure there are big things ahead for this talented teen.

Are you getting noticed? written by Andrew Van De Beek illumin8 partners Occasionally an email hits my inbox that says “Andrew, you’re getting noticed”. The email, sent via networking site Linked In, notifies me that people have been looking at my profile. That got me thinking, how do we as businesses go about ‘getting noticed’ in a positive way? What do we do that builds the public’s perception of who we are as professionals? Publicity can be a godsend to businesses, but the old saying that ‘there is no such thing as bad publicity’ does not necessarily ring true to those who are attempting to build rapport within their community. Now, I am by no means a marketing expert, often referring our marketing to a very skilled local firm. However, I have learnt valuable lessons along the way to getting noticed for all the right reasons. • Be true to who you are. The more genuine our approach, the more people will grow to recognise it as a point of difference to others who may not be. • Connect with people. Take the time to connect with those around you on a personal level. Showing an authentic interest in others’ affairs can often break down barriers and can lead to long-term mutual respect. • Don’t just sit still. If we simply sit in our workplace and expect people to find us, then we are dreaming. In this day and age of technology there can be a lot of white noise that can make it hard to be noticed. Set yourself apart from the competition. Be active and engaging, and if you are not sure on how to, get in touch with someone who does. • Passionately support a cause – We are all passionate about something, be it the lost dogs’ home, tsunami relief or refugee rights. By tangibly showing our community that we are invested in and care about something that is greater than our own business, allows them see our compassionate side. Over time the above points, and others, have become essential in growing a business that I am proud of, and one that others are noticing.

What steps are you taking to ensure that you’re getting noticed in a positive way?

Jumping for joy By Kristy Martin

If - like most people - you watch TV, chances are you’ve seen the Kit Kat ad where the female skydiver jumps out of a plane at the end and releases a huge red Kit Kat parachute. What you might not know is that the skydiver in question is peninsula girl Sarah Brown, a self-confessed ‘adrenaline junkie’ who actually gets paid to jump out of planes for a living. When she is not working as an IT recruiter in the city during the week, that is. At the weekends, Sarah works as an Accelerated Free Fall Skydiving Instructor up in Nagambie (about 90 minutes north of Melbourne), where she teaches people how to jump out of planes solo. “I have always been an adrenaline junkie, from wanting to get on the fastest rollercoasters as a kid to driving fast cars and motorbikes,” Sarah says. “That said, my other hobbies have taken a bit of a backseat, as skydiving pretty much took over my life.”

Sarah, 31, was still living on the peninsula (she left in 2010 but still returns to visit family) when she went and booked her first tandem skydive in mid-2009. But rough weather that day forced her to remain on the ground. It was while waiting in the hangar that she noticed photos of ‘fun jumpers’ and saw a course advertised on how to become a licensed skydiver. She immediately cancelled her tandem jump and asked to be enrolled in the next instructor course. After her first jump, she was hooked. “I’m often found jumping most weekends of the year. “There are height restrictions for jumping, so I usually jump from 15,000ft ASL (Above Sea Level) which provides just over a minute of freefall before opening my parachute. “This is the highest you can jump from aircraft without legally having to have oxygen. “The highest I’ve jumped from is 18,500ft, which was closer to two minutes of freefall.” Sarah says she had done some

skydiving work for a Big W ad campaign when she was approached to audition for the Kit Kat ad. She was flown to the Whitsundays for the shoot, where she was asked to land on the spectacular Whitehaven Beach. (Tough gig, right?) “Sounds easy, but it wasn’t... the winds were pretty strong and I was constantly fighting my way to avoid landing out in the water, but at the same time, listen and follow the directions from the cameraman. “That said, when it came to landing, it was awesome to land on an almost deserted tropical beach.” So, how do Sarah’s parents feel about her love of jumping out of planes? “At first they were a bit skeptical, and I guess they were hoping that it was just a phase. “But they could see that it made me happy and that it opened new avenues for me to pursue. “In fact, my mum was more than happy to hear that I had gotten rid of my motorbike to go towards my skydiving!”

Little Shop of Horrors Costumery

A WORLD OF MAKE BELIEVE AND FUN If you’re familiar with the 1980s cult classic movie Little Shop of Horrors, you will recall that nerdy florist worker Seymour decides to put an interesting plant in his shop window in order to attract more customers.

And certainly the crowds flock… but then the unusual plant named Audrey II grows into a humongous bloodthirsty fiend. Alicia Slater and Louise Mac experienced a similar surge in business at Little Shop of Horrors Costumery after taking inspiration from the film and hiring a graffiti artist to paint the villainous plant on the front of their establishment. And boy does it make people stop and enter the shop, which now boasts a kooky wonderland feel and is a treasure trove of all things movies, make believe and fun. Alicia and Louise - a pair of “sisters, mums, movie-holics, comic nerds, Halloween crazies, pop culture specialists and all-round ‘in a world of their own’ type of ladies” - took over the small costume shop on Watt Road, Mornington, last year and gave it ‘the mother of all facelifts’ With over 30 years’ customer service experience between them, they have an in-depth history of costume and fashion studies, web design and retail management experience, plus an impressive understanding of film, music and TV. “We used to always throw crazy, elaborate parties and a lot of the costumes and accessories are straight from our wardrobes”.

( 12

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

Plus they have the personalities to match their zany business. “We’re here because we love it and we feel like we can be ourselves in here.” Whether it’s costumes, special effects make-up or fancy dress accessories, they have your bases covered. They love helping people source obscure costumes (think Barbara and Adam Maitland from Beetlejuice, Ellen Ripley from Aliens or Helen Sharp and Madeline Ashton from Death Becomes Her). “We genuinely love all this stuff. We love our ’80s movies, our pop culture, our cult classic movies,” explains Louise. Their research involves countless hours of movie marathons and they even hand make little knickknacks from Harry Potter to add to the vibe of the store. Check out their amazing transformation of a local high school teacher into the Night King from Game of Thrones – super impressive! “We promise a fun and stress-free experience for our customers where you can sail away as a pirate, run away with the circus, be transported back in time, travel aroundthe-world, dress-up like a Disney princess, become a famous movie star, smash and pow your evil comic villains and rock out like a music icon.” Little Shop of Horrors Costumery A: 6/1 Watt Rd, Mornington P: 5977 1288 W: littleshopofhorrorscostumery.com.au

Tell us a bit about you and what you do: My name is Chessie and I am a 16 year old fashion and lifestyle blogger. I love fashion and photography which is why I love and am so passionate about blogging and instagramming. I share outfit photos, flat lays, and random photos of where I’ve been or what I’ve been up to. Another passion of mine is horse riding and I very much enjoy riding my horse, Albert. Describe your style: I can’t pin a particular style as some days I wake up wanting to wear a sophisticated, minimalist outfit and the next I want to dress in a colourful, double denim outfit! Most of the time I like to keep it simple but with a bit of a ‘Chessie Edge’ (as my friends like to call it). Do you think Mornington Peninsula style/ fashion has a certain look or feel? I’d say it’s pretty casual with a touch of beachy (especially in the summer time!). It has a different aesthetic to Melbourne’s fashion and I have to say I much prefer the laid back feel of Mornington Peninsula’s style!

The Victorian Tennis Awards were presented by ANZ at Tennis Victoria’s Championships Dinner on the 29th of June and guess who was a winner? Mt Eliza Tennis Club, that’s who! The major award of the night went to the hard working (and Peninsula Association member) tennis club for Most Outstanding Club, Centre or Association in Victoria - and they couldn’t be more proud. Professional and Talent Developer Coach Steve Foot explains. ‘We’ve had a big year. We’ve increased membership and continue to offer a variety of programs. We are dedicated to keeping girls in the sport, and are proactive in supporting the peninsula community.’ Mt Eliza Tennis Club also offers coaching sessions by the best in the business. There are three club professional coaches, two junior development coaches plus three other career coaching experts. Tennis lovers from across the peninsula come to learn from the professionals who currently train two of the best Under 10 talents in Victoria (twins Zahra and Stami Arthurs). So this is how the award works. Tennis Victoria has a community tennis officer who keeps in contact with regional clubs. Twelve clubs were originally in the running for the award before the list got whittled down to four contenders. The rest is history. AUGUST 2015 (45)

The Village Glen’s owner chats exclusively to MP Magazine. He has raced cars and yachts internationally and has an active involvement in the airline charter business. In 2006 he made headlines for purchasing the Ansett Estate in Mt Eliza for the highest amount ever reached at auction at the time. He also owns the adjacent heritage-listed Norman Lodge and has just completed a multimillion dollar renovation of the property. But Chas would much rather talk about his achievements at The Village Glen in Rosebud, the successful retirement village he commenced back in 1978. The complex was originally on 15 acres but now occupies 120 acres complete with its own nine-hole golf course. Adjacent to the village is the recently completed Ti-Tree at Village Glen, a 229 bed aged care facility designed for seniors requiring more hands-on care. Chas says he believes elderly retirees deserve to live in style and comfort and that The Village Glen and Ti Tree had brought resort-style living to residential aged care. These combined facilities are home to over 1000 residents who are cared for by in excess of 250 professional and supportive staff.

Chas enjoys being fully hands on at the Village Glen, where he and a number of his family members have a succession plan (he has four children and nine grandchildren) to continue their aged care philosophy. “I think the residents take comfort in seeing the family involved at the village every day.” Plans are completed for a Ti-Tree Lodge at Mornington, a new 91-bed facility to be located on Nepean Highway and built over the coming year. Chas has been in the construction industry since he was a teenager and was working for himself by the time he was 17. His building company was based in Braeside where he was involved around Melbourne with the construction of schools, hospitals and commercial property but was looking for a community project of some description on the Mornington Peninsula. This was how The Village Glen came into existence. “We wanted to do our own thing. We’ve never really copied anyone. “We’ve been innovative over the years in the management of the village and are one of the only retirement villages in Australia with its own nine-hole golf course,” Chas says.

There are also few private operators left these days. “We treat the village as if it were for family. “Everything we do we ask ‘Would this be good enough for my own parents?’ Chas describes his staff as special people. “You’ve got to be to work in aged care. “You’ve got to be passionate and dedicated.” And after 35 years at The Village Glen, Chas himself remains as dedicated to the business as the day he started.

Chas gave Mornington Peninsula Magazine an exclusive tour of the heritage-listed Norman Lodge, located on Nepean Highway, Mt Eliza, which he has spent three years renovating. It has been renamed to its original title ‘Manyung Lodge’. While a relative will live on the property, the family is looking to open up the grounds to the public once a year, with donations going to a nominated charity.

Into the Deep By Jane Hone

How often have you noticed that you’re swimming with spider crabs, short haired hippocampus seahorses, pot-bellied seahorses, tassled anglers and blue-ringed octopuses? PT Hirschfield is on a mission to show us what’s right under our noses. She spends several hours a week diving under the piers of Blairgowrie, Portsea, Rye and Flinders. She visits the Pope’s Eye and shipwrecks, and back beaches such as Diamond Bay and Bridgewater Bay. She also dives the Solomon Islands, Philippines, Vanuatu and Fiji, but she is constantly amazed that people don’t realise how much exquisite sea life can be seen here on the peninsula. “I just think there’s so much there that people are not aware of. “Often I go into a café or something and the people right across the street don’t even know what’s right there under those piers.

“So I try and share that with people.” PT takes incredible photographs of the creatures she encounters, and a video she posted of spider crabs two weeks ago has already amassed around a quarter of a million views on youtube. She says that as a result, people all over the world are talking about Blairgowrie. Among all of this, PT is suffering from terminal endometrial cancer, which she was diagnosed with shortly after being awarded her open dive certificate in 2010. Getting back into the water became her primary motivation to recover from the multiple surgeries she had to undergo, and from there bloomed the inspiration to foster a love and appreciation of the ocean in others. “I would hate for anyone else to miss out on how amazing it is. “Diving on the peninsula has changed my life. It’s given me a sense of purpose and joy and celebration,” she says. Visit www.pinktankscuba.com to read more about PT’s journey and view her stunning photography.

Did you know that you can burn upwards of 600 calories in one hour of playing squash? Add to that the fun and social aspects of the game, and the fact that there are several professional players in our peninsula midst, and you already have three very good reasons to visit the new Tonic Squash & Gym in Dromana. Owners Rodney and Amelia opened the gym in January this year, and have since been watching their membership base steadily grow. It’s easy to see why the gym is popular with locals: whether you’re man, woman or child, a squash novice or a serious player, the team at Tonic has you sorted. There are kids fitness classes and junior squash programs, in-house competitions every Thursday night, ladies squash sessions from 2pm on Fridays and for those looking to play competitively, the Mornington Pennant Competition on Tuesdays. Which makes perfect sense, seeing as Rodney Martin is known as one of the best shotmakers in the squash world. Martin made history in 1991 when he won the World Open title, becoming the first person ever to defeat the formidable duo Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan. At one point he was ranked number two in the world, and has five Australian Open titles under his belt.

His wife, Amelia, was a top 20 player on the women’s team. Then there’s Zac Alexander, who has won 13 Queensland junior titles and three Australian junior titles, and represented Australia in 2006 at the World Juniors. He’s spent seven years competing professionally and peaked at a world ranking of 36. All three squash experts are available to train members. And if you feel like giving the racquet a rest, Tonic also boasts a fully-serviced gym, group fitness classes (including pilates) and personal training all through the week. ARTHURS SEAT GETS GREEN LIGHT

FOR Blue Gondolas A new $16 million gondola-style cable car is set to replace the old Arthurs Seat chairlift, creating a world-class tourism attraction for the Mornington Peninsula.

Construction on the Arthurs Seat Skylift Gondola is expected to begin soon, after the Arthurs Seat Skylift consortium signed a 50-year lease. The project, which has a proposed opening date of late 2016, was given the green light after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) rejected a claim by local protest group Save our Seat that the Skylift would pose a bushfire risk. The new development includes an allweather gondola with top and bottom station buildings and facilities, including a café at the summit. Parks Victoria says it will commence

$1.5 million of public space upgrades to complement the Skylift project, improving vehicle and pedestrian safety, car parking and visitors facilities across the precinct. Victorian Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water, Lisa Neville, says the new ‘world-class tourism attraction’ would bring jobs and visitors to the peninsula. “The all-weather, all-abilities design will be an attraction for visitors all-year round, providing great opportunities for everyone to experience the sensational views over Port Phillip Bay,” she said. “The Arthurs Seat Skylift will be a significant addition to the Mornington Peninsula region, and a ‘must do’ experience for national and international visitors to Victoria.” While an elevated cable car ride has operated at Arthurs Seat since the early 1960s, the previous chairlift was closed

in 2006 due to safety concerns. Save Our Seat has been working hard to challenge the new Skylift development, starting with the eight days they spent at VCAT in November. The groups say the project will impact the natural landscape (through the removal of trees) and that there has been a lack of community consultation on the matter, according to spokesperson Kylie Greer. “We were never against a replacement of the chairlift…not one person was against an environmentally sympathetic replacement of the chairlift. But this is a gross overdevelopment.” Save Our Seat plans to return to VCAT to argue that the ‘Pantone Process Blue’ colour of the gondolas, approved by Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors, goes against VCAT conditions that the colour complement and blend into the natural surroundings.

ONE HAIRY YEAR With his long, wiry beard, Jimmy Lancaster is used to people telling him he looks homeless.

Growing ‘the beast’ since October last year, even Jimmy’s wife Carly says it’s like “kissing a homeless man”. But all jokes aside, Jimmy’s reason for deciding to go hairy for one year is actually for a serious cause. Jimmy, a father of two, is raising money and awareness for SANDS Australia after Carly suffered two ectopic pregnancies last year and the family was left with little information or support. “It was the hardest thing we have ever been faced with and I felt so helpless,” Jimmy says. “The sadness of losing two babies and not knowing how to deal with it all, and having to find a way to support my family when they needed me most, was the toughest time of my life.” Ectopic pregnancy is when the foetus develops somewhere other than the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube. Carly suffered two, in October and December, and says the hardest part was

being sent home from hospital the first time without really understanding what she had been through. Eventually the couple discovered SANDS. “SANDS Australia offers 24/7 phone support, with trained volunteers who are all bereaved parents and understand the grief of losing a baby,” Jimmy explains. “They also have volunteer parents who educate student midwives on how to support families who have just experienced a loss. “What we are hoping to achieve by me getting hairy is to raise not only money, but awareness for ectopic pregnancy and any pregnancy and infant loss.” Jimmy got the idea of growing a beard for a year from a soccer pal who grew a mullet for charity. He has now raised over $4000 and once he gets to 12 months, plans to hold a charity night at the Seaford Soccer Club, featuring a silent auction of sporting memorabilia. He is also likely to auction off the chance to

shave his beard to the highest bidder. Since starting the fundraiser, Jimmy and Carly have been surprised by how many others have experienced ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. They are pleased to have encouraged more openness about the subject. To support Jimmy by making a donation, head to https://give.everydayhero.com/au/ one-hairy-year

A Musical Extravaganza I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the 200 or so students from all three campuses who made our 40th Anniversary Musicale at the Frankston Arts Centre such a wonderful celebration of all things musical here at Woodleigh School. It seemed that collaboration, as much as individual brilliance, was the theme of the night. Students from our Junior Campuses, Minimbah and Penbank, practised and performed with Woodleigh Campus students on choral and instrumental pieces, whilst senior students were incredibly fortunate to work with and perform alongside the touring South African ‘Memeza’ Choir. Their combined performance of ‘Stimela’ was full of energy, strength and solidarity. It was a powerful thing to behold.

AUGUST 2015 (45)

As always, these evenings give us an insight into the musical journeys available to Woodleigh students. We begin with Year 7 ensemble groupings, and work our way through varying musical styles and influences to our Year 12 soloists – those at the end of their secondary education, representing the pinnacle of personal achievement in this artistic discipline. Here, we are seldom disappointed, and this year I congratulate Chloe, Andy and Max on their individual performances, which displayed skill and poise well beyond their years. A bonus, and one which was fitting at this celebratory 40th Anniversary event, was the video highlights of former students’ musical lives. From Simon Monger (1990), now Concertmaster with the Bielefelder Philharmonic in Germany, to Jazz Harpist Tara Minton (2003) who lives in London and tours throughout Europe, these vignettes

into the post school careers which music can bring were a wonderful addition to the night. My thanks also go to the Music Staff for your care and tuition of the students, and to the parents of these children. Many of us endure what seems like years of

screeching and banging before the fruits of our children’s labours come to bear. But practice and persistence makes perfect, and as we say at Woodleigh, there is no growth, without struggle. Jonathan Walter – Principal

It’s worth upwards of $20,000, sounds like a beehive and often makes people angry when it flies overhead. In fact, when Frankston man Mark

Coverdale flies his drone in the name of his aerial photography business, he often gets abused, sworn at and threatened. People have tried to run him down and once his camera was even shot at by a rifle. “Ever since that woman in Mt Martha was caught (topless) sunbaking by a drone and put on a real estate sign, everybody hates drones.” Mark says he always ensures he knocks on people’s doors to warn them his drone is going to be flying in the area. On the flipside, however, he is used to children excitedly running onto the street to take a look and strangers asking him what he is photographing. Drone photography has, quite literally, taken off. When Mark first applied to get his licence one year ago, there were only 32 other drone operators Australia-wide. Now there are hundreds. There is even an app dedicated to drone photography (Dronestagram). It all started as a hobby for Mark and a friend, who wanted to film crocodiles on an annual Northern Territory fishing trip.

After doing his research and buying a drone to muck around with, Mark then went and spent ‘bucketloads’ turning it into a commercial venture. He had to get a controller’s certificate and operator’s certificate, made easier by the fact he already had his pilot’s licence, and even drove to Canberra to do his flight assessment for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. The drone can fly up to 400ft and is restricted by legislation. Mark’s company, AXIS 5 Aerial, now does photography for real estate companies,

promotional shots for golf courses and other businesses but the potential use is far-reaching. Drones can be used to check on the success of crop growth in vineyards, for 3D mapping and volumetric measuring and, given that they can get to places humans can’t or places that are risky or dangerous, the potential impacts when it comes to workplace safety are huge, says Mark. They can also be used simply to get a unique and visually spectacular view of the world in which we live. www.axis5aerial.com.au

Back in 2000, local stiltwalker Leonie Deavin couldn’t believe her luck when she was approached by one of Australia’s premier events management companies to manage the entertainment for Melbourne’s link-up party for the Sydney Olympic Games opening ceremony. Leonie was managing director to 30 professional roving circus performers that night, plus a team of additional volunteers, before a crowd of 20,000 winning ticketholders at the Melbourne Tennis Centre. “When one of the biggest shows came to town (Sydney Olympics 2000), we were managing probably the biggest opening ceremony party in Melbourne,” recalls Republic Events’ Patrick McLoghlin. “We needed an army of entertainers and performers, and we needed to trust the source. When Leonie walked into our lives – she was a breath of fresh air. “Over coffee and a chat we forged a relationship that continues through to

( 36

today. It is one of the most enduring relationships we have – and one of the proudest!” This was the moment Leonie’s company, Nova Star Productions, came to life and became one of Melbourne’s leading event teams for entertainment. Leonie was a stiltwalking pioneer with costumes that had never been seen before and began working for large corporate companies like Crown Casino, the Hyatt, Flight Centre, Mobil, David Jones, Myer, Hilton, Audi, ING and many more. To add to her astounding repertoire of events, she was (and still is) a regular stiltwalker at events such as the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix, Australian Open (where she had a very famous rally on her stilts with Paul McNamee), Moomba, Melbourne City Christmas events and Chinese New Year, Opening of Icehouse, Luna Park, Wonderland Fun Park, Southgate, Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, Australia Day festivities, AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup Day Parade, Darwin Cup, Hamilton Island Race Week and hundreds of festivals and events around Melbourne and interstate.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

In 2006 Nova Star Productions managed the entertainment for the Commonwealth Games open day, where Leonie headed up 40 roving performers and stage managers over the day in five areas from the MCG, MSAC, Athletes’ Village, State Hockey and Netball Centre and Birrarung Mar bridge. She was also the director of entertainment for the EastLink open day in 2008, where 100,000 people cycled, jogged and walked through the historical opening. “Leonie brings a special element to any event, with her spectacular costumes, fine attention to detail and wonderful nature with kids,” says Fiona McPhee of Events Australia. “I recommend Leonie to bring that something special to any event.” Nova Star Productions also proudly donates its time to many charities such as Orphans of Ghana, Variety Christmas Party (for 10 years), Charity2Charity children’s charity, the Good Friday Appeal, and the Royal Children’s Hospital. Leonie is celebrating 15 years of a very successful career in event management specialising in her stiltwalking group.

Attract new customers using Bartercard

Bartercard CEO Clive van Deventer

3 tips every business owner should follow In business it’s important we continually challenge ourselves and set the benchmark higher each time we reach a goal. For Bartercard, 2015 has been all about re-energising our member experience through new technology and thinking outside the box to offer more convenience and innovation to the marketplace. As 2015 shapes up to be a big year, these are approaches we recommend every business owner follows.

3. Be technology focused

1. Go digital In 2015, digital marketing continues to shape the way consumers are being reached. More than half of internet users go online to assist their spending decisions, and the most successful businesses work hard to establish preeminence in the digital space – helping them listen and respond to customers instantly, cater to their market more specifically, and enhance the consumer experience through an integrated digital strategy. Shop any reputable brand and you will see its website, social media and stores are all strategically aligned to lead the customer to spend. If you are not digital, you are missing out on a big slice of your market.

2. Think disruptive Disruptive ideas and business models requiring less resources to undercut bigger companies aren’t just successful because of the lower capital requirements. Where the structure and rigidity of big business precludes AUGUST 2015 (45)

fast action and execution, smaller disruptive models with less corporate layers are coming out on top, or are using technology to cater to their customers’ needs in better ways, thus re-shaping industries and changing consumer habits. Think long-distance calls (Skype), CD stores (iTunes), DVD rentals (Netflix) and taxis (Uber). Companies catering to their customers with disruptive solutions are cutting it in 2015.

Technology is constantly reshaping the way we do business, from the way we meet and convey information to the way consumers are spending. For many business owners, introducing new technology in the workplace can be a daunting area as it removes the certainty of archaic systems that have always been in place. Disruptive business models offering competitive market solutions and more efficient customer service are all technology-based; the only way to keep up is to embrace it. It’s a good idea to periodically look back on your results to see what you can be achieving better, and reassess your business direction each time you set a new goal in place. Take a bird’s-eye view of your business and start planning ahead with these tips. To find out how Bartercard can benefit your business, call Bartercard Mornington Peninsula on 03 9773 8177 or 0410 023 453; or alternatively visit blog.bartercard.com.au/blog for more business articles.

Orphans of Ghana

POLICE WANT YOUR HELP

Charity Ball The annual Orphans of Ghana Charity Ball has become one of the Mornington Peninsula’s most extravagant and highly anticipated events. Now in its fifth year, make sure you keep Saturday October 10 free and head along to support this very worthy cause. This spectacular event will once again be held at Mornington Racing Club and will feature internationally acclaimed show band Big City Beat. There will be a four course dinner and drinks on arrival, plus auctions, raffles and lucky door prize. Money raised from the event goes to the Ashan Children’s Home in Ghana, West Africa.

In 2005, local woman Aimee Braganza sold her hairdressing business and car and flew to Ghana to volunteer at the orphanage. During her year there, she was responsible for the care of 50 children, taught English at the local school and often had to carry the small children hours away to the medical clinic to be treated for malaria. It was an emotional roller coaster when Aimee returned home, not only for her but also the children she left behind, as many viewed her as their mother. Aimee has since worked tirelessly to raise funds for those children she came to know and love. Inspiring her family, friends

If you’ve got CCTV at your home or business, you might be able to help the police solve local crimes.

and Rotary to jump on board has meant food crops, water storage tanks, new beds and mattresses, mosquito nets and education has changed the lives of those children in Ghana. Construction of a baby clinic with sick bay and office has improved the children’s health dramatically. Aimee’s mother and organiser of the ball, Cheryl Carter, says funding is always needed. “The home now looks after around 65 children and we are primarily responsible for

education costs, food and medical supplies,” she says. “However our biggest challenge at the moment is to construct new dormitories in accordance with the social services guidelines.” To help support the cause, grab yourself a ticket to the ball. Cost is $130 and bookings can be made by phoning 0417 760 759 or 5975 0733. For news and updates, find ‘Orphans of Ghana Charity Ball’ on Facebook.

Frankston and Mornington Peninsula police are asking people to register their details if they have private CCTV cameras installed at homes or business premises. Sharron Coburn of Frankston police says the supply and use of the footage is voluntary, and any request for footage would have to be made by police. “We are trying to get a picture, for investigative purposes, of where cameras are located. “We are trying to get interest (from the community), but already we’ve had businesses and residents register their details.” Registrations can be removed at any time and all information will be securely stored on a police database. To register your CCTV camera, email SMRD4CCTVREGISTRATION-OIC@police. vic.gov.au or phone Sharron Coburn at Frankston police on 9784 5639 or Julie Simpson at Rosebud police on 5986 0444.

THE MAN IN BLACK IS BACK On September 1, 1954, an unknown young man walked into the recording studio in the Memphis Recording Service building at 706 Union Ave in Memphis, Tennessee, and walked out having cut a record that would define its own genre of music. The artist is Johnny Cash and that single was Hey Porter – released on the Sun Records label in 1955. Sixty years later, having won countless awards, including 14 Grammies and having become a worldwide household name, this unequalled artist has become an icon of 20th century popular culture and his legend has continued to grow as we have moved well and truly into the 21st century. Since 2009, award-winning AUGUST 2015 (45)

singer Daniel Thompson and Australian guitar master Stuie French have been wowing Australian audiences with Johnny Cash The Concert, keeping the spirit of ‘The Man in Black’ alive with their authentic tribute to Johnny Cash and his music. In 2015 the boys return

with their brand new show Cash 60 - 60 Years of Johnny Cash marking 60 years since the world first heard from the powerhouse that was Johnny Cash. Backed as always by their engine room, The Tennessee Studs, Cash 60 promises to be Johnny Cash The Concerts’ best show yet. Always keen to give their audiences something new and fresh, Cash 60 brings you the expected hits and highlights from Cash’s stellar career but as always the show is full of select favourites and forgotten gems from the extensive Cash catalogue. Cash 60 is showing at Frankston Arts Centre on September 4. For tickets, head to artscentre.frankston.vic.gov. au or phone 9784 1060.

Anyone for tea? 24 July – 27 September 2015 Storm in a Teacup is one of Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery’s major exhibitions for 2015.

The exhibition reflects upon tea drinking in Australia.

Image: Polixeni Papapetrou, Riddles that have no answers, 2004, from the series Wonderland 2004, type C photograph, Courtesy of the artist & Stills Gallery, Sydney

Beginning with well-known paintings of the afternoon tea table from E. Phillips Fox and Arthur Streeton, the exhibition goes on to explore the darker side of tea drinking and the social and environmental impacts of the humble cup of tea. Michael Cook’s Object (table), 2015, provides an alternative history to the narrative of colonialism while Sharon West and Adam Hill both use humour to subvert colonial understandings of the afternoon tea party as an occasion of refined gentility. Storm in a Teacup features paintings, works on paper,

photographs, ceramics, sculpture and installation by 34 artists, including Charles Blackman, Julia deVille, Julie Dowling, E. Phillips Fox, Rosalie Gascoigne, Adam Hill, Danie Mellor, Darren Siwes and Anne Zahalka. A range of special events accompany the exhibition, including a Curator’s Talk, with drinks and nibbles, on Thursday August 13 from 5pm-6.30pm (members $15, guests $18) and the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company presents a pantomime for 5-10 year olds on Saturday September 26 from 10.30am-12.30pm (children $15, adults $5). The Gallery’s self-serve café has been transformed into a 19th century tea exchange. Enjoy a range of Mornington-based Bespoke Tea and scones, jam and cream available 11am-4pm on Sundays. LOCAL WORKS BY INTERNATIONAL ARTIST By Penny Ivison

Manyung Gallery in Mt Eliza is home to the group exhibition, Urban & Iconic, this month.

“And by intervention, I mean painted, scratched and altered by means of physical action and free hand graffiti, creating a unique piece with each work.

Among those exhibiting is Alberto Sanchez, a Spanish/Australian artist based in Byron Bay.

“In a simple and spontaneous manner, I pervert those photographs not just as a means of rebellion but also to re-arrange the message.

Alberto’s unique technique of hand painting photographs results in dream-like visions of familiar cities and landscapes that have been shown all over the world. The multi-award winning artist spent time on the Mornington Peninsula recently creating works starring our little corner of the world, and Manyung Gallery is thrilled to have the opportunity of exhibiting these. The contrast of having grown up in a small town in Spain surrounded by castles and medieval architecture to living in Australia for the past 10 years gives Alberto pause to reflect on how our urban surroundings shape us and what our place is within that context. He says, “My intention is simple: to alter our perception of the modern urban landscape. Very much like a graffiti artist would tag a train or a company would place a billboard with the latest i-gadget, I have manipulated and intervened with these photographs. AUGUST 2015 (45)

“As a result of this intervention, my characters are set free to teem and detach themselves from the restraints of the matterof-fact and indulge in a limbo, deluded parallel reality.’ Other artists involved in this exciting exhibition are Fred Colla, Craig Penny, John Santucci, Tanya Stubbles, Ben Howe, Ross Wilsmore, Ralf Kempken, Darren Doye and Gavin Brown. With sculpture by Robert Delves. Caroline Ling, audiologist, has over 15 years of experience and considers herself very lucky to have such a rewarding career. “People with a hearing impairment can find themselves becoming increasingly isolated from the world and may even stop attending social activities because they cannot join in. “Hearing aids can make an enormous difference to their quality of life,” she says. Some of the testimonials of Caroline’s clients include: “The personalised service at MPH was wonderful and the result from my new aid has exceeded my expectations. New Rye Beach Business Association is here A ‘dynamic, young and outgoing’ committee has been formed to focus on the commercial interests of the Rye Beach area. The Rye Beach Business Association was initiated by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council in order to promote the Rye township. As president Peter Houghton explains, the township is “basically on the side of a main thoroughfare, which means it doesn’t always lend itself to being a comfortable and convenient town precinct.” Mr Houghton says that the “main focus is the identity of Rye – giving people a reason to visit Rye, and to shop, and to contribute… to give people a reason to visit in the off season.”

The association is currently working on a number of projects, including an all ages music festival, the establishment of CCTV cameras on shop fronts along Point Nepean Road (to promote safety and security), and talks with VicRoads regarding traffic movement and foreshore plans. The initiative is still in its formative stages, and locals from the whole Rye precinct are invited to share what they’d like to see happen in Rye from a commercial point of view. At the very least, the association exists to facilitate communication and discussion between stakeholders and to act as a point of reference for the vicinity. LIONS GIVE SCOUTS A HAND

The Frankston Lions Club has come to the rescue of the Baden Powell Scout Group, helping them fund a new motor and prop guard for their inflatable rescue boat.

The Lions Club’s generous donation meant that the scouting group was able to run their water actives programs earlier this year, secure in the knowledge that if any learner sailors or kayakers needed rescuing, they could successfully and safely reach and rescue their members. Ron Chidgey, president of the Lions Club Frankston, said the Lions were always pleased to help local youth through the scouting movement. “We have had a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the Baden Powell Park Scouting Group that includes helping with the renovation of their beach hall and the sale of Lions Christmas cakes by the scouts at Christmas.” Lions Clubs across Australia focus on giving back to their communities and support such varied causes from medical research, people with disabilities, emergency relief and leadership development. The Baden Powell Park Scouts Group is a large and active scouting group operating from two halls and offering a broad range of outdoor activities for local

youth. Thanks in part to the Lions Club, the beach hall is able to offer a wide variety of water activities including, sailing, kayaking and canoeing.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is held nationally in May and is an opportunity for friends, family or workmates to come together, share a cuppa and some delicious food, and help those affected by cancer. “The day is as much about each supporting each other in our community as it is about supporting the Cancer Council,” said event organiser Jo Violeta, moderator of the Facebook community Mornington Peninsula

However, in many cases this does not address the underlying triggers and patients get caught up in a vicious cycle of flare-ups and treatment that never seems to end. Tirant Good Skin Clinic customises and offers treatment plans specifically tailored for each and every patient using complementary dermatology principles and Dr. Tirant’s ‘Treatment Protocols’.

“Results of trials show that the treatment protocols are very effective in the treatment of Chronic Plaque Psoriasis with a 90% success rate,” stated Prof. František Novotný MD, Ph.D., Prague, after a yearlong attestation study on the effectiveness and safety of the Dr. Michaels treatment protocols. Dr. Tirant privately operates two Tirant Good Skin Clinics, in Frankston and Melbourne. “Just a short note to congratulate you on researching and finding what I believe and have proven to be an extremely effective treatment for psoriasis. I have suffered from this chronic, embarrassing and uncomfortable disease for 15 years. I have tried Ultra-Violet treatment, iprosone, Loriox and creams and other alternative medicines - all with short term ineffective results. I might also add, at an extreme cost. Your cream was a major breakthrough for me.” N.W Vic, Australia

NEW BT COCKTAIL

We have the answers Susan Verheyen and Adelle Simic specialise in helping problematic skin conditions at their clinic, Advanced Skin and Laser, on Old Mornington Road in Mt Eliza.

They can treat acne, clogging, pigmentation, scarring and rosacea, in addition to IPL hair removal and IPL skin rejuvenation services. In addition to Sue’s 34 years’ experience in this field, Adelle has worked with a leading doctor specialising in IPL treatments and acne treatments before joining Sue two years ago. Are you using the wrong products, too many products or the wrong ingredients? And do you know the difference? Education and the correct ingredients, along with treatments that work, will show you results. No hype, just honest, commonsense results. Did you know that, according to information presented in the US recently on scientifically validated skincare offering the correct delivery systems, those with ingredients being Retinol (Vit A), Vit C, microbal peptides and growth factors

appeared to offer the best results in skin conditions? “It is important to keep up with your study,” explains Sue. “It is not good quoting from an advertising paper if it is not backed by scientific research studies in reputable universities and hospitals.” There are many differing Vitamin C products on the market, ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and ascorbyl tetraisophalmitate have better penetration. Your skin technician must know these things so you pay for results and not just hype. Now let’s discuss your new skin through IPL REJUVENTAION for face, hands and décolletage. IPL skin rejuvention removes sun damage, general pigment and redness and uneven skin colour - winter is the time to have these treatments. Book a consultation on 9787 7475, ask for Sue or Adelle, and they will help you make the changes to your skin your deserve.

Mt. Eliza Beauty Therapy has launched their ‘BT Cocktail’ treatment – winner of the Aestheticians Choice Award for 2015 in the USA for its exceptional ability to hydrate, promote cell renewal and protect cells from environmental and free radical damage. The award–winning cocktail of ingredients include the powerful ergothioneine antioxidant which assists in protecting skin cells against solar radiation, plus active peptides, which work to enhance structural support to the cells for a healthier, firmer complexion. Those lucky enough to experience BT Cocktail can enjoy a noticeable reduction in fine lines and pore size, as well as significant improvements to skin elasticity, texture and overall radiance. Get your hands on this award-winning anti-ageing skincare today! Phone 9787 7475 for an appointment.

PLASTIC

SURGERY

BOOM

DURING SPRING RACING CARNIVAL & SUMMER When you work in any industry, you start to notice different peaks and troughs in demand and some of these trends are quite obvious at different points in the year. Spring is one of those times. Having worked in the plastic surgery industry now for over 20 years, I see a huge influx of patients once the spring fashions arrive in the stores. I assume that when the clothes get lighter in both colour and fabric, that we start to think about our bodies and the little issues that bother us. A lot of people start diet and exercise regimens, while others decide to embark on cosmetic plastic surgery procedures that they have been considering for a long time. Kas, our experienced injector nurse also says that the Spring Racing Carnival season peaks demand in her skin care and injectables practice so that we are glowing and looking great for those special racing days. Even though we are busy during the rest of the calendar year, we are particularly occupied at these noticeable peak times. For example, school holidays and the

Christmas periods are always very popular for surgical procedures, and we ensure extra operating and consulting time to accommodate our patients. Our infusions and product range called SKIN by RPS is an excellent preparation for the summer months. You should always wear a good quality sunscreen, not only on your face, but on all exposed areas. Injectable wrinkle erasers and dermal fillers are a great way to hide those unwanted blemishes and Kas our injector nurse, works with a wide repertoire of products and techniques to give you an individual, natural result. Tracey and I are always available to provide complimentary consultations concerning cosmetic plastic surgery. Once you have some information you may wish to meet with Dr Brown, who charges a consultation fee. In a recent exciting move, we have commenced consulting on the third floor

of Frankston Private Hospital, which offers modern facilities in beautiful surroundings. Dr Brown continues to operate at Beleura Private for those patients who find it more convenient than St John of God Hospital in Berwick. For information on any of our services or to make an appointment, please call our rooms on 03 8768 5000

Aries

Down tools if you can and go out and play. This is your month to get the creative juices flowing by relaxing. This could mean sitting in nature and breathing in the fresh air or picking up paintbrushes and splashing colour. Watch the children around you and copy them.

Taurus

Home and hearth are the focal points this month. You can take pleasure from fixing, decorating and fine-tuning your living quarters, and from the company of loving family members. It is the small things that comfort you. If your household irritates you, then maybe it is time for a change.

Gemini This month you get to do what you do best – connect with your network of family, friends and colleagues. Neighbourhood politics may be playing on your mind and so an avenue of escape is required. It is time to dream, and then communicate your vision far and wide. Cancer

Money matters are on your mind this month. It is time to reassess your earnings and budget. Are you focusing on matters that boost your self-esteem and finances or are you distracted by activities that do not boost the coffers? August is the time to focus on practicalities.

Aquarius

The start of August sees you in the limelight. What are you going to do with your time in the sun? The choice is yours. This is your chance for self-improvement and enjoyment. By the middle of August you are likely to be focused on more practical matters. A little more groundwork is needed before you are able to truly shine. Two positive planets – Venus and Jupiter – are moving into your Zodiac Sign heralding good fortune. You have a few loose ends to tie up before rewards come your way. Your social calendar is full this month. This is likely to be because you are looking after other people. This is something you do as second nature. August sees you cooking, cleaning, washing and generally pacifying your loved ones. The trick is to also look after yourself.

Scorpio

Your professional life takes centre stage during August. It is time to apply yourself to career matters. Meaning, purpose and destiny may all be helpful matters to dwell on. Your life could change direction if so you desire. Otherwise try to see the big picture and aim high.

You can take aim and achieve your target this month. Archers love to aspire for big things. Right now you can aspire and achieve. You may also inspire others with your plans. You are unlikely to sweat the details. This is your time to pursue the big picture. Your social life may take back stage this month as you assess where you invest your time and energy. You are ready to make changes. Seasons come and seasons go. Right now you are enjoying a change of seasons in your life.

Partnerships play a prominent role in your life during August. This could be your nearest and dearest, or it could be a business associate or contract. It is time for you to pay attention to your liaisons rather than ignore them. Enjoy the unions that are fruitful.

Pisces

You take your car in for a service on a regular basis. Now it is time to do the same thing for yourself. Your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health are all due for a checkup. If you are feeling out of sorts then it is time to get back on track. Be gentle on yourself right now.

HUMAN MACHINE The new book by local GP Dr Tony Marshal A practical new book written by Frankston GP Dr Tony Marshal aims to give people a basic understanding of how the human body works and its common ailments. Written in layman’s terms, Human Machine is a handy condensation of a six year medical school course tailored to the everyday person for consultation on daily health issues. With 25 years’ experience in his field, Dr Marshal, of Playne Street Mediclinic, is a regular columnist for some of the most widely read medical magazines, including Australian Doctor and Medical Observer. He says he decided to write Human Machine after finding there was a lack of basic health literacy among the general population. Dr Marshal says that although owner’s manuals are provided for all types of

appliances, gadgets, and even mobile phones, there is still no ‘owner’s manual’ for the complex machine that is the human body. “The reality is that people often go their whole lives without ever having read a basic book about their body. “This manual was an opportunity for me to fill this gap and help to educate people about how the human body works.” The book begins with a simple description of a cell and covers the basics of anatomy, physiology and pathology, illustrating the components of all the systems that make up the human body. The book includes some of the most common diseases that each organ or system can suffer, for example hypertension, asthma, stroke and diabetes and also focuses on general health issues, such as obesity, sleep disturbances, travel medicine and first aid.

There is also a useful compendium of addresses and telephone numbers of local and national organisations in the Australian health system. Human Machine is on sale now at Bookpal, Amazon.com and other leading booksellers. You can also pick up a copy at the Playne Street Mediclinic.

‘Let’s talk about organ donation’ Local family’s plea to the community

Running around in his superhero cape and boasting about his upcoming ‘spooky dress-up’ birthday party, Jagger Fangmeier seems like your regular four-year-old boy. However, Jagger’s appearance of health is misleading, as the petite blonde boy with the rosy cheeks suffers from a rare condition called autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), which affects one in 20,000 children worldwide. The vast majority of children with Jagger’s condition will progress to kidney failure in the first five years of life, requiring a transplant or dialysis until a suitable donor is found. There is also a significant risk of liver failure, requiring a liver transplant and medical intervention for the rest of his life. This is the reality Jagger’s mum, Amelia, and his 11-year-old sister, Savannah, live with every day. “When you have a child that is sick, you can never relax,” says Amelia. Jagger is in and out of hospital, he is tired all the time and

constantly suffering liver infections and UTIs, so the knockon effect really takes a toll. But, despite his young age, Jagger knows he will one day need an organ transplant and Amelia strongly believes this is a conversation every Australian family should have with their children, regardless of their health. “It’s important that we have the conversation (about organ donation) and it’s the younger generation we need to target.” Amelia says people can become uncomfortable talking about organ donation because potential donors typically have to die in a sudden or traumatic way. But with DonateLife Week coming up on August 2-9, now is a good time to for families to raise the issue and discuss their wishes with loved ones. DonateLife Week is the national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation in Australia, with people being urged to register on the Australian Organ Donor Register and to share that decision with their family. Savannah is doing her own part to raise awareness of organ donation by coordinating a ‘Holding Hands’ art project and sausage sizzle at her school.

Each student at Rye Primary School will dress in pink on August 4 and paint/design their own life-size paper person cutout. The figures will then be stuck together to give the impression they are holding hands. Savannah has been approaching local businesses for support and even did a presentation for her grade 6 class to educate them about organ donation. She says her efforts are just one way of showing her little brother how much he means to her. To learn more, visit donatelife.gov.au

CLOTHING TO BOOST SELF ESTEEM

It is amazing what a makeover can do for a woman’s confidence and self esteem.

Especially somebody who has perhaps never been able to treat herself to new clothing and cosmetics before. Clothes4U is a unique boutique in Rosebud helping disadvantaged peninsula women and girls look and feel better. The service was started two years ago by retired solicitor Veronica Whittaker in a spare room of a house, then a garage and now, finally, a proper shopfront, which was officially opened recently by Australian of the Year Rosie Batty. “I saw a need for giving disadvantaged women everyday clothes to help with their self esteem and confidence,” Veronica explains. She says while there are plenty of support services for people suffering addiction, mental health issues and homelessness, this was more about helping women in need feel safe, pampered and special. Women aged anywhere between 16 and 70 have utilised the service, which carries a variety of clothing styles and sizes. Clothes4U is run by a team of 35 volunteers,

( 68

who act as personal stylists to the women that come in to the store. “We pamper them, make them feel really special,” Veronica explains. The women are asked what they need clothing for, whether it be going to court, obtaining a rental property, a job interview or even a funeral. Clients are women on a benefit who have been referred by other services, including St Vinnies, The Salvation Army, Good Shepherd

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

or employment agencies. “We work with homeless youth from Mornington, women who have been emotionally, physically or sexually abused, women with mental illnesses, parolees,” Veronica says. Clothes4U also provides makeup and toiletries, including shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes and deodorant. All items have been donated by the volunteers, friends, local businesses and

wholesalers. “Every Tuesday a Salvation Army bus comes from Hastings with four or five women and we dress them. “It’s a real treat for them. “We want them to feel safe and pampered, even if it’s just while they are here.” Often the women cry because they have never seen themselves in new clothes. “Everyone sees a difference between when the women come in and when they leave,” Veronica says. The team at Clothes4U are always looking for quality clothing, but sometimes the goods they receive are not suitable for the boutique. These items are given back to people in need through SecondBite, who does a weekly food distribution in Rosebud. “We wouldn’t give anything to a client we wouldn’t put on ourselves.” Veronica says 100 per cent of the money raised for Clothes4U goes back into the service. “People who utilise the service will be given great community service, respect and no judgement.”

HERE COME THE BRIDES Why the Mornington Peninsula is such a popular wedding destination... Given that the Mornington Peninsula is a spectacular destination with so much to offer, it is little wonder our region is fast becoming the number one location for weddings in Victoria.

photographers, celebrants, entertainment, hair and makeup artists and attire options.

“The region has a great diversity of landscapes that is unmatched anywhere else in Victoria,” says Mornington Peninsula Weddings (MPW) group president Mary-Anne Brasacchio.

Buying Diamonds at Trade Prices Buying diamond jewellery direct from the trade no longer requires you to be associated with the trade in order to access trade prices.

of exceptional brilliance not typically found in your local jewellery store cabinet. So the questions is: why pay retail? So, where exactly do you go to secure trade prices on diamond jewellery? Well Diamond Coco in Mornington is one such company. Owner Anthony Hansen has been selling diamonds and jewellery to the trade for many years but he is just as happy selling diamonds to the end consumer too. Anthony has been revolutionising the way diamond merchants do business in Australia with a hybrid business model that no longer differentiates between his online, trade or private clients. But don’t expect a flashy retail showroom

with commission driven sales staff to serve you. At Diamond Coco you deal direct with Anthony in a friendly and approachable environment that does away with the hype and instead offers you expert guidance on not only choosing the right diamond for your budget, but also assisting you with the finished jewellery piece too. Whether you are looking for an engagement ring, diamond stud earrings or a bracelet, Diamond Coco offers you unbeatable prices backed by oldfashioned service and expert guidance. Diamond Coco is located at Suite 6, 38A Main Street Mornington. Private appointments can be made by calling Anthony on 1300 230 430.

Nor do you need to seek out some city address following a tip-off from a friend of a friend. The internet put an end to all that years ago! The cost benefits alone make buying from the trade highly rewarding, with typical savings of 60-70% over retail store prices. But, just as importantly, with the right advice and guidance from a genuine diamond vendor (and not a retail sales clerk) allows you to purchase a diamond

EXCEPTIONAL FOOD FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY Ambience Events & Catering is a small, friendly, family-owned business, born and bred on the Mornington Peninsula. Because of their local heritage, they only serve the finest selection of fresh, seasonal, hand made canapés using ingredients sourced from local producers across the region – from the meat to vegies, fruit, seafood, cheeses, creams, chocolate and crisp breads. What sets Ambience Events & Catering apart is their commitment to providing clients with a tailored, completely individual touch. Rather than simply providing a ‘one size fits all’ or ‘off the shelf’ set menu, they create bespoke selections, in consultation with their brides - to not only satisfy a range of tastes and food intolerances, but to specifically complement factors such as the overall theme and vision of the special couple’s once-in-a-lifetime event. “Our other non-negotiable mission is to ensure a constant stream of finger delicacies throughout the duration of your event,” says Gay Whiteley. “From entrée to dessert, no guest will ever go hungry or miss out on your full array of specifically selected choices.” While some guests nibble on succulent king prawn, nectarine and wasabi aioli ‘boats’, others will fill their stomachs with heartier treats like indulgent mini Angus beef sliders, or Thai chicken lemongrass skewers.

Conveniently located on Main Street, the agency is owned and operated as a franchise by Robyn Woodruff and is also an ATAS accredited business. The friendly and reliable staff - who live for travel - are there to help you get the best value for your holiday budget. Robyn talks: “Monique Cook married my son Jamee in June this year at Treasure Island, Fiji. “It was without a doubt one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever seen. The Fijians do it so beautifully. “Monique initially had her concerns about getting married overseas, but after going through the process, she now wants to help others with what can be seen as a rather daunting task.” According to Monique, when she and Jamee decided to tie the knot, their ‘to do’ list seemed never-ending. “I didn’t know where to start,” she says. “You’ve got the venue, flowers, cake, dress, music, photography, bridesmaids and groomsmen - the list just goes on and on. It was so overwhelming! Treasure Island in Fiji offered the perfect backdrop for an exotic overseas wedding for helloworld Mornington Cruise and Travel’s Monique Cook, who married the son of the long serving agency’s owner/manager, Robyn Woodruff, last month.

“The process was scary, having to surrender full control to a wedding co-ordinator in Fiji, and waiting for email

responses that are on Fiji time became frustrating. “It would have been nice to have had some assistance from someone that had been through it themselves. “I spent countless hours surfing the internet for guidance. “I have now learnt so much about overseas weddings, I would love to assist others to make their day as special as mine was.” Monique says her wedding, from start to finish, was exceptional. “The entire day was amazing. “Imagine swaying palm trees, clear skies, blue water, tropical flowers and a beautiful beachfront choir. “I highly recommend taking your wedding offshore for a truly unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience.” For helpful and friendly travel advice, including assistance with your wedding in paradise, contact helloworld Mornington Cruise and Travel. Making everything Rosy

Weddings

Tyabb Roses has come a long way since its inception in 1988.

Starting with one hot house and 3000 rose bushes, this family owned business now includes eight hot houses and 15,000 bushes on its 20-acre property. The team at Tyabb Roses has been fortunate to assist many beautiful brides on their special day with their bridal bouquets, ceremony and reception styling. Over the past decade, they have seen many trends such as the classic rose posey ball and tear drop/cascading bouquets, to the more eclectic arrangements full of wild greenery such as gums, berries and succulents. Flower crowns now adorn the heads of brides, replacing the traditional veil. Ceremony and reception styling has become an integral part of the wedding day. You’ll see archways covered with roses, baby’s breath and jasmine, plus hanging blooms and scattered petals as aisle decorations.

“When talking with our brides, we like to get a thorough understanding of how they want their special day to look and feel. “This can range from elaborate centre pieces of tall vases, with an abundance of roses, orchids and lillies to a more minimal country chic look of mason jars with three to five roses and baby’s breath. “We are passionate about what we do and strive to exceed our clients expectations.” Tyabb Roses A: 45 O’Neills Road, Tyabb P: 5977 4652 or 0400 567 215 www.facebook.com/tyabbroses

In fact, when he first applied for the job at Hickinbotham eight years ago, he showed up to the interview with a “slapdash resume and an esky full of home brew”. Still, he got the job and the rest, as they say, is history. “It was a bit different going from 50 litre batches to 1000 litre batches. Every day I am learning new things.” Cameron still loves his job as much today as the day he started, and admits people are jealous when they find out what he does. “A lot of home brewers wish they could do this for a living. “It’s long hours and it’s hard work, but I wouldn’t do anything else.” Cameron says he’s now got his sights on the trophy (the highest accolade) for next year’s AIBA.

Red Hill Truffles Sadly, the end of the truffle season is closing in, but you can still try these rich delicacies of the food world in the form of truffled eggs. Red Hill Truffles owner Jenny McAuley says the rare round fungus, categorised in the same luxury league as caviar and found exclusively on her property, tastes superb with local free-range eggs. If you want to experience the unique and sought-after taste of the truffle, also known as ‘black gold’, pick up some truffled eggs from Cellar & Pantry in Red Hill or Red Hill Estate ($12 half doz). “It’s been a wonderful season and we have had so much fun introducing truffles to people with our public truffle hunts.” Jenny is also working with local businesses the Epicurean and Max’s at Red Hill to develop some exciting new truffle products, so watch this space! Red Hill Market

Celebrating 40 years Red Hill is the most famous and longest running of Victoria’s craft markets. Red Hill Community Market began in 1975 as a community based event where 28 local producers and crafts people came together to sell and barter their goods and excess produce. While the bartering is a thing of the past, the vibe, colour and excitement of those early years is still very much alive. This September, Red Hill Community Market celebrates its 40th year of operation and, according to Craft Markets Australia, the public support for the market continues to go from strength to strength. This comes as no surprise considering Craft Markets Australia are dedicated to ensuring the high quality of produce on offer. Soak in the ambience and regenerate your senses as you meander through a labyrinth of unique treasures. There’s a fairground ambience where over 300 talented stallholders display their unique wares, from old world to modern contemporary - there truly is something for everyone. Munch your way through samplings of local produce from AUGUST 2015 (45)

honey and cheese to fruit and vegetables to hand baked fare and organic beer, without straying past the perimeter, for these stalls cater to metropolitan sophisticates as well as seekers of bargain produce.

Stalls offer everything from metal sculpture to rustic aged timber wood products, but all share the motto: ‘We make what we sell’. Think beeswax candles, hand-crafted glass bowls and ceramics, pendants, candleholders and recycled jewellery. If you want to spend a day wandering about, unearthing a few bargains along the way, there is little doubt that on the first Saturday of the month (September to May) between 8am and 1pm, the Red Hill Community Market is the place to be. In fact, your weekend is not complete until you experience the colour, atmosphere, excitement and great value of this quality endorsed market. www.morningtonpeninsulamagazine.com.au

MAGNETIC WATER Magnetic Water P: (03) 9787 0747 A: 2-3/19 Sir Laurence Dve, Seaford E: inquires@magnetic-water.net

MAGNETIC WATER is unique, pure and healthy. Tap water can appear ‘clean’ but is often contaminated with harmful bacteria and undesirable chemicals like chlorine. Staying hydrated plays a crucial role in maintaining overall wellbeing, but did you know that the key to maintaining healthy cells is sustaining a balanced alkaline environment in our bodies? MAGNETIC WATER is natural alkaline water. Alkaline water acts as an antioxidant, it helps detoxify the body by assisting in the removal of acidic waste products that can aggravate conditions such as gout and arthritis. Scientific laboratory tests prove conclusively that Magnetic Water surpasses other waters on the market today by providing a perfect ph level of 7.6 and an amazing alkalinity level of 140mg per litre. A balanced level of alkalinity in the body is a key factor to staying healthy and assisting our bodies in fighting disease. Drinking balanced alkaline water such as Magnetic Water improves hydration. Proper electrolyte balance in the body is the key to our hydration. Common electrolytes are calcium, magnesium and potassium. MAGNETIC WATER comes from a pure natural source deep under the layers of basalt and scoria rock of Mt Warremheip, near Ballarat in Victoria. Our water is naturally infused with essential minerals and electrolytes, calcium, magnesium, potassium and silica.

For more details on the health benefits of Magnetic Water visit

Once our water has been extracted from the earth it is passed through our unique, chemical free, magnetic fluid processor which enhances its alkaline properties and creates our unique MAGNETIC WATER. The mineral properties of Magnetic Water are not artificially added. Silica for example is naturally present in Magnetic Water, which contains 57mh per litre. The daily recommended adult intake is 20 to 50mh per day. Silica is essential for bone, hair and skin health. It energizes our immune system and helps promote mineral balance in our bodies. Silica is a vital component of collagen. Collagen is the connective tissue that makes up most of our skin. As we age we lose silica and this contributes to the ageing process. Maintaining balanced silica levels helps us delay the ageing process, keeps our skin, hair and bones healthy and promotes general good health. Silica can be found in every cell in our bodies. MAGNETIC WATER contains 57 mg of Silica per litre, the highest naturally occurring silica level of any bottled water in the world. MAGNETIC WATER not only tastes good, it is good for you. MAGNETIC WATER; choose it and drink it to help preserve your good health.

FAULTY TOWERS

couldn’t fault it By Julie Saville

Prepare yourself for unexpected, fully immersive and highly improvised comedy in Faulty Towers The Dining Experience at Brooklands of Mornington. Set in a charming dining area, this unique show pays homage to the popular British sitcom ‘Fawlty Towers.’ Check in to the theatre, be shown to your seat by Basil, Sybil and Manuel, then try not to laugh yourself silly as they serve up a 1970s-inspired four-course lunch or dinner. Expect delayed and interrupted service, hilarious improvisations and sidesplitting theatrical scenes throughout this interactive and rip-roaringly fun dining experience that has won international acclaim. Having watched many hours of Fawlty

Towers episodes over the years, we were a little dubious about how good the acting would be, but were astonished with the uncanny resemblance to each of the characters. Sybil was a great host, Manuel was a fumbling barrel of laughs and Basil made the entire evening complete with his eccentric mannerisms. Highly recommended for an entertaining night. The caramelised red pork with Asian mushrooms, sweet potato puree, bok choy and mandarin glaze is just one of the fabulous dishes that will have you wanting to come back for more. At About Thyme, breakfast and lunch are available from Wednesday to Sunday and if it is something different you are after, this is probably the only place in Mornington you will find nasi goreng - a famous Indonesian dish of chilli fried rice with a fried egg on top - on the breakfast menu. A great cure for those weekend hangovers! (Sunday brekkie kicks off at 9am.) With a range of fresh, yummy salads and decadent desserts including strudel, lime brulee, bliss balls and brownies, plus the great coffee, you won’t find the ‘thyme’ to dine elsewhere! Affordable, consistent and sustainable food is what Matthew Bisogni and Mark Blyth are aiming to deliver at their new Mornington café, Carbine Cantina. Oh, and don’t forget the steaming hot coffee and speedy service. The café, on Carbine Way, features a menu designed to reflect that favourable middle ground between industrial takeaway and fine dining. This is simple and honest food, reflective of the local community and the local region. Think eggs and bacon, French toast or muesli for brekkie, fresh rolls and baguettes for lunch or, for something heartier, tuck into one of the delicious burgers (panko crumbed chicken, pulled pork or roasted Wagyu beef). Whether you are a worker in the industrial estate, a retiree living nearby, a local student or someone who frequents the racecourse, you are sure to find something to satisfy your tastebuds. Convenient hours, including a 6am opening, make Carbine Cantina the perfect spot for a quick and quality start to the day. The robust Gravity coffee will wake you up, or if it is something stronger you are after, the venue is also licensed and stocks a selection of local wines and beer. There is even an upstairs area that is perfect for business meetings or group catch-ups.

Seeking autonomy and wanting to spend more quality time with their young families, the guys left their previous jobs and took on Carbine Cantina, formerly Grazen Café, back in March. Matt’s experience, most recently at Tuck’s Ridge in Red Hill, includes managing cafes, restaurants and wineries in Australia and Italy since 1986. Mark was employed at Max’s at Red Hill Estate and, prior to that, worked for restaurants in and around Melbourne. Matt works front of house, whilst Mark is training in the kitchen, assisting the chef in preparing tasty and affordable meals and keeping the menu fresh, up-to-date and exciting. Matt and Mark encourage you to stop in for a cuppa, say g’day and try one of the daily specials, which include a selection of soups, salads, fish and chips or pasta. They can also assist when it comes to catering for your work functions, social groups or special events. Carbine Cantina – the new place to eat, laugh and enjoy!

Welcome to Polperro - the peninsula’s new hotspot. Located in the heart of Red Hill, this family-owned winery is ticking all the boxes. Owners Sam and Emma Coverdale bought the Polperro property back in 2013 and have steadily taken it from strength to strength, with their luxury accommodation, a to-die-for bistro menu showcasing fresh local produce and a cellar door that attracts busloads of tourists. Emma has even recently opened a gorgeous yoga studio, Hothut Yoga, nearby, offering classes to villa guests and peninsula locals on weekends. Young, down-to-earth and accessible, Sam is not the type you might expect to find running the show. And perhaps this is why things work so well. A trained winemaker who has been in the industry since he was 18, Sam’s first vintages were in the Hunter Valley, NSW. He studied a Bachelor of Wine Science at Charles Sturt University and went on to work throughout Australia for Hardy’s and then France, Spain and Italy. In 2006 Sam started his own label, Even Keel, established in NSW, because not only was the industry lacking jobs at the time, but he had become disillusioned with mass produced wine. “I took a punt and it worked well,” he says. He met his now wife, Emma, and the pair began looking to settle down.

passion is surfing) and had the major wine market of Melbourne in close proximity. Seeing the opportunity for extending his winemaking further, Sam in 2009 launched Polperro - a single vineyard premium wine label based solely on the Mornington Peninsula - and began wholesaling to boutique restaurants and bottleshops. In 2013, he decided they needed a cellar door and set out in search of the perfect property, which was found in the 25 acre ‘Vines of Red Hill’ estate. After a complete transformation with the assistance design team Hecker Guthrie, Polperro was established. Sam and Emma now have a four-year-old daughter, Amelie, and their family dog Alfie can be found tearing around the vineyards on any given day. The staff are also like family, including head chef Daniel Kerekes who has had a major hand in the success of the bistro. “Food is a huge part of what we are doing and it is very much based around seasonal produce and sharing,” Sam says. Visitors can expect a casual yet informed approach to service, and a unique winery experience when visiting Polperro. For a complete experience spending a night at the accommodation or visiting the cellar door is highly recommended. Polperro A: 150 Red Hill Road, Red Hill P: 5989 2471 W: polperrowines.com.au

decor home garden At the back of every seller’s mind is a dominating thought: Is this the best time to sell? If you approach this question scientifically, you might consider factors like the number of similar properties on the market that are competing with your home to attract buyers, interest rates, the general mood of the market, the general mood of the economy, the occurrence of school holidays, gazetted long weekends and hours of sunshine per day. However, when it comes to real estate, science goes out the window and emotion is sitting at the front of the class. Because it has no specific recommended retail price, real estate lives in an open market environment which gives the astute seller and their savvy agent an opportunity to actually manipulate the market and create a higher than usual sale price by getting a combination of things right. The season in which you choose to sell really has nothing to do with it. The power of emotion is a real estate agent’s best friend. When a property appeals to a buyer, a chemical reaction occurs in their brain which ‘encourages’ them to buy. The buyer will go through a series of emotions but essentially, they see themselves living in the property. They see where their big screen TV will sit, where the dining table will be

AUGUST 2015 (45)

positioned and where they will sit at it. They will see the way a child’s room will look and the garden they will create. I call this MMI or Mentally Moving In. As an agent, I know how important it is to recognise this condition because when my buyer goes MMI, it means I have something they want. The amazing thing is that all of this planning and scheming and wanting and wishing goes on before a contract is signed or any money changes hands and considering this flood of raw emotion consuming a buyer who is ‘hot and heavy’ for your property, do you think they would give any thought to the weather or the price of money or other homes for sale? The only science to selling comes in the formula of your presentation and agent selection. The seasons don’t really matter as much as the way you go about introducing your property to buyers. Your local Bestagents Approved Member is skilled at advising exactly what you should be doing to sell for more. Ask them for a copy of my book and I will show you how I sold my home in the ‘wrong’ season at the height of the global financial crisis and how you can do it too. Permaculture is an often heard term, but how it can be used to benefit your home garden‌ Permaculture is a term used to describe a natural approach to the designing of our built environment and encompasses both the home and garden. Here we will briefly touch on the latter, and if you are a keen gardener it is well worth your time sourcing some further reading about Permaculture systems. Before considering any form of garden design it is important to have an understanding of your immediate environment and the local region where you live. Observation is the key. Before embarking on a garden design journey it is worth spending some time mapping out the warm, cool, wet and dry areas in your yard so that you can make sensible decisions about your plant choices and structure placements. Also have a look around the neighbourhood to see what does well. Wise plant selections are important. Indigenous and appropriate native plants are best adapted to your local environment and require less maintenance while providing natural habitat for local wildlife species. Diverse plants with diverse relationships are desired

to create a thriving ecological community. Make use of perennial plants where possible, as they require less attention than annuals. Annual plants have an important place in a Permaculture system, but confine these to vegetables, leafy greens, useful flowers and green manure crops. Various elements of a Permaculture system will have multiple functions. Carefully placed elements provide a number of uses. Whether it’s a structure or plant arrangement, consider how a particular element can serve more than one purpose. You may be able to not only provide food from a selected tree, but also seasonal shelter and shade. Other plants can help to build the soil by fixing atmospheric nitrogen or provide organic matter that can be dug into the soil or used in your compost. Recycling of resources is paramount to a functional Permaculture design. Water harvesting, grey-water reuse, kitchen and garden waste recycling are a few basic concepts that will significantly enhance your garden system. Composting used in conjunction with a productive worm-farm provides consistent quantities of organic fertiliser and soil building material.

Outside inputs can be kept to a minimum with a well functioning system. However, should you require additional materials try to source clean, unpackaged, local and preferably recycled material. Chooks are an important part of the waste recycling system in a Permaculture garden. As well as a few eggs a day, chooks will also help to keep your garden free of weeds and fallen fruit, but it is wise to design your chook systems carefully to prevent both plant and chook losses. Spring is the perfect time to introduce chooks into your backyard, so if it is something you have been thinking about for a while give it a go now. The kids will love it. So, the Permaculture approach is really a term used to describe a thoughtful, integrated and sustainable way of design. Combining food growing with sensible plantings and waste recycling will surely reduce the footprint we leave on this fragile earth.

COUNTRY POTS Traditional Clay Cookware In the Magdalena River in central Colombia, the women from a village called La Chamba continue to carry on an artisanal tradition that goes back at least 700 years. They create pots from dark organic clay found in the region using traditional techniques. The pottery is shaped by hand and its surface polished with semi precious stones to give it a distinctive black colour before it gets fired in an open air kiln at high temperatures. This is unglazed clay, so it contains no lead or toxins. The naturally porous quality of the material allows the cookware to retain heat and enhance flavours, which is suitable for those who appreciate the merits of cooking and presenting in organic, handcrafted vessels. The Full System Duct Clean Process

They are often unsure as to what duct cleaning entails and how often it’s needed.

Step 1: Return Air Duct Cleaned: Removes built up dust and contaminants from the return air duct line. Takes around 45 minutes to complete.

“If you are considering cleaning your ducted heating system it is important to realise that the entire system needs to be cleaned, not just the ducts.” In most cases up to 90 per cent of the dust (and therefore dust mites, pollens, germs and fungi) that clog up your system are located in the air return ducting and heater interior, only 10 per cent is in the outlet ducts. The dust and germs stored here breed and multiply continuously, even when the system is not in use. These contaminants lay ready and waiting for you to turn the system on, allowing them to blow around your home for you and your family to breathe in. Full System Cleaning removes this build up and ensures your system delivers clean healthy air into your home. A full system clean system also allows air to flow unrestricted, ensuring your system runs more efficiently.

Step 2: Cleaning of Heater Interior: Removes ducts and contaminants from lining inside the heater, the fan blades and motor and the heat exchanger. Also takes around 45 minutes. Step 3: All Duct Lines Are Cleaned and Checked: Removes contaminants, dust and debris from the duct lines that run from the heat to each individual outlet. About 5 minutes per outlet. Step 4: Sanitising with Bactigas, Natural Teatree Disinfectant: This sanitises your entire ducted heating system. Bactigas is distilled from the Australian teatree plant, and is a natural antiseptic. Provided your system is cleaned correctly, three years is a suitable time frame for cleaning, more often if your household contains people with severe dust allergies.

A Space for Playing & Learning

‘Something magical happens when you plant a dream with a seed. With plenty of love, hard work and patience, it can blossom into an extraordinary gift.’ (MacKay, 2013)

Something special has happened at Toorak College’s Junior School, Wardle House. A passionate and dedicated group of students, staff and friends from the wider community united together to create a beautiful garden. The project, inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, embraced real-life problem solving with opportunities for creative thinking and exploration. It encouraged the acceptance of multiple points of view, a sense of community and collaboration. Children from 3 year old preschool to Year 6 were invited to think creatively and imagine how an unused area of the Junior School playground could be transformed into a space for playing and learning. Over six months they imagined, shared visions, collaborated and respectfully negotiated elements of the garden to conclude the garden needed a working creek bed, a

maze and an eagle sculpture with movable parts. Year 2 student, Sophie said, “I chose a creek with a bridge so we can paddle in the water when it is hot. The creek will be filled with water.” Jasmin in Year 1 continued, “I think we should have a maze. We will make the bushes short so we can look over them so when the bell rings we can quickly find our way out. We can have stepping-stones to the creek where children can put their feet in it when they are hot. The stepping-

stones can be made out of the stones from the area. We are going to make the creek shallow because if people fall in they will not drown.” Sculptor Ben Wrigley was invited to help the eagle sculpture come to life and with his support the students created something spectacular using engineering and physics principles so the eagle spins and soars above the garden. Year 3 students wrote to Boon Wurrung Elder, Aunty Carolyn Briggs, to ask for permission to call the statue ‘Bunjil’. In June the garden was officially opened. Flowing water symbolises a new beginning so students pumped water down the creek bed to celebrate the new use for this space. In the true spirit of any Reggio Emilia inspired project, the Wardle House ‘Space for playing and learning’ will continue to grow and evolve becoming a living installation providing an opportunity for the environment to be a teacher. Toorak College warmly invites you to experience this children inspired garden. Call 9788 7234 or visit www.toorakcollege. vic.edu.au
