Nikki Osborne relaxes on the deck of her stunning McCrae home overlooking Port Phillip Bay. It’s a far cry from the film set in Brisbane where the actress spent eight weeks filming a television series about to air on Channel 7, called ‘Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story’. Nikki is a mother of two, an actress, a comedian, a Peninsula local and one of the lead characters in the new Channel 7 series, which airs Sunday, February 12, and Sunday, February 19, at 8.30pm on Channel 7 (in two parts). She plays Delvine Delaney, the beauty pageant winner who found fame on Australian television in the 1970s, became a cast member of ‘The Paul Hogan Show’ and later a co-presenter on the quiz show ‘Sale of the Century’. It’s a dream role for Nikki, who bears a remarkable likeness to Delvine. “When I heard about the role I just went ‘please’,” she says. “I love Delvine. I’ve been nicknamed Delvine in comedy shows I’ve worked on in the past. She and I had pretty similar careers, working in comedy and television.” ‘Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story’ tells the story of Paul Hogan - the almost accidental supernova of raw comedic talent who exploded onto Australia’s entertainment scene and then the world. He was a Sydney Harbour Bridge rigger with five kids who entered a TV talent contest, became a household name and an Oscar-nominated star. Embraced by Australians as ‘Hoges’, he is joined on his journey by lifelong friend, producer and sidekick John ‘Strop’ Cornell. Together they make Australians laugh then proud as one of the most successful tourism campaigns in history sells Aussie hospitality to the world. This, along with the success of ‘Crocodile Dundee’, cements Hogan’s legacy. ‘Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story’ explores the factors that shaped this success, his family life, his two great loves, divorce and his struggle with life in the public eye. Nikki’s career includes a role in Oscar-winning director Peter Bogdanovich’s US telemovie ‘The Mystery of Natalie Wood’ and appearances in award-winning television dramas such as ‘Rush’ and the Bryce Courtenay miniseries ‘Jessica’. It is in comedy, however, where she really made her presence felt. Her improvisational talents were uncovered when she hosted the live interactive game show ‘Quizmania’. Mick Molloy invited Nikki into the cast of his comedy series ‘The Nation’ and numerous guest spots on panel shows, breakfast radio and pilots followed. Nikki battled a gruelling round of auditions to secure the role of Delvine then spent eight weeks away from her family during filming. Her boys Will, 8, and Teddy, 4, have interesting thoughts on mum’s upcoming television role.

“Will’s little girlfriends at school are far more into what mummy does that he is!” she laughs. “And Teddy is worried I’m going to get stuck in the TV!” Nikki and her husband moved from Hampton to the “Ninch” seven years ago. “My husband wanted land and I wanted water so we travelled south until we found something that had both,” she says. As for juggling parenthood, a Peninsula lifestyle and a soaring career, Nikki is pretty relaxed. “Having an apartment in town would be a good crash pad but once you’ve had a taste of the ‘Ninch’ you don’t go back,” she laughs. ‘Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story’ - Sunday, February 12, and Sunday, February 19, 8.30pm on Channel 7.

Personalised Learning at Woodleigh Last year at Woodleigh, our Year 12 students earned our best ever set of VCE results. A median ATAR of 86.1 and median study score of 35 were both outstanding achievements – they were also the highest median scores of any school on the Mornington Peninsula. However, 2017 is a new year with new challenges and (some) new students to meet them. At our Woodleigh Campus, 2017 will see the consolidation of our personalised learning programs. Personalisation recognises that all children are different, and supports the fact that they will in turn learn differently and at different rates. Last year, our pilot program brought tremendous results. Students who participated reported to be more deeply engaged with their learning, taking greater ownership of their studies, as well as developing a more positive image of themselves as we better celebrated their unique achievements. We will continue our multi-award winning Homestead redevelopment program with the rebuilding of Homestead 6. This will create a fourth new-generation Homestead space – combining the pastoral, academic and social aspects of school for our students. There may be a few disruptions as the building takes shape; but as Homesteads 1, 2 and 3 have already shown, the short-term inconvenience is certainly worth it! On Saturday, February 18, we will hold our annual Scholarship Testing Morning and School Tours. I encourage all parents and students who are interested in hearing more about Woodleigh to join me at 9am for an Information Session, followed by student-led tours of our beautiful senior campus. The dos and don’ts of Dolphin watching BY LIZ ROGERS
Most of us know dolphins are social aquatic mammals that breathe through their lungs, not gills. That means they have to swim to the surface frequently to get a big gulp of air - and that means we get to see them up close and personal. Lucky us! The Department of Sustainability and Environment has drawn up guidelines to ensure these amazing creatures are left to their own devices and free from harm. Here’s some simple pointers. If you’re in a recreational boat, keep your distance. That means 100m away from the front of and behind of dolphins and 200m away from a whale. You should also leave any encounters to chance, and if you’re on a jet ski, a 300m distance is mandatory. It is illegal to deliberately position your boat in the path of dolphins, whales or seals and any illegal interactions under the Wildlife Act 1975 will result in a fine up to $6000 or a six-month prison term. Ouch! (If you’re surfing or swimming remember that dolphins, whales or seals may see you as a threat, so don’t get any closer than 30m from a dolphin or 50m from a whale). Ticonderoga Bay, from Police Point to Nepean Rock, is a protected sanctuary zone. Boats can enter (without exceeding 5knots within 200m of shore) but must always maintain their distance from dolphins. The best way to really see these creatures is to choose a licensed tour operator who is permitted to approach dolphins and seals subject to a range of strict operating conditions. Alternatively use some binoculars - and remember dolphins don’t know who you are and may feel threatened. They have been known to attack. And NEVER feed them! Some animals (remember last edition’s seagull story?) become dependent and aggressive when they don’t get what they expect. So, still want to see or swim with dolphins? Of course, you do, but be careful. And if you see any trapped, sick or injured dolphins or whales contact the Whale and Dolphin Emergency Hotline on 1300 136 017 or the Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Customer Service Centre for seals or penguins on 136 186. Respect your local wildlife. It’s the only one we’ve got.

Youth Dressage Championships, What an Event! BY DANA KRAUSE
Fiona Selby’s magnificent world class facility Boneo Park was immaculately turned out for The Ellanbrae Park 2017 Youth Dressage Championships - a competition for riders aged 10-25 years. About 150 riders competed over three days from Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and even New Zealand. The talent of both riders and horses was phenomenal, some of which are sure to represent Australia on the international stage in the future. Dressage is often described as ballet on horseback and spectators were not disappointed as they were entertained by some of the most graceful young riders and horses in Australia. This was also the first year that interschool classes where included, supported by Toorak College, making this event inclusive of all dressage riders.

If I can plant a seed in just one of these kids’ minds that there are possibilities out there, it’s been worth it.” The easy going My Kitchen Rules judge has been emergency relief volunteering in Dingley once a week and will be in a school in Frankston North mentoring kids one on one from February onwards. “I also fundraise for the children’s hospice Very Special Kids,” she continues, and as the rain begins to thrash the sand and sea, she tells me she’s turned her hand to distributing sailing apparel with her husband David Andrew. “I’m not a sailor, but David is mad for it, so somehow we’ve got a bedroom full of British made Rooster sailing kit! EASY EGAN QUICK SUMMER STARTER RECIPE
Liz says: ‘This is my fave quick salad and serves four as a starter, or you can cut the prawns and potatoes smaller and serve in little glasses with drinks. If I’m serving this to guests I’ll keep out four prawns and place one on top of each serve. It’s also good served on a bed of shredded and lightly dressed iceberg lettuce.’ Yum! TIP- Keep any oil the chorizo drops and use when next making a pasta or frittata.
PRAWN COCKTAIL
2 spring onions, green part only, finely sliced on the diagonal 8 baby potatoes, cooked and halved 20 cooked prawns, peeled and deveined 1/2 chorizo, thinly sliced on diagonal, then pan fried until slightly crispy * Grated zest 1/2 lemon
SAUCE
2 tbsp. mayonnaise 100 ml thickened cream Juice 1/2 lemon 2 tbsp. tomato sauce 1/2 tsp., or more to taste, Tabasco 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/4 tsp. smoked paprika Salt and pepper to taste A little warm water to thin Whisk the sauce ingredients together and adjust seasoning. Whisk in a small amount of warm water. Add potatoes to sauce 1/2 hour before needed. Just before serving toss in all other ingredients and gently mix.

TAYLAH CARROLL FINDING HER MELODY BY LIZ ROGERS media and communications. Philosophy filled my electives and is my true love within the realm of academia.
Taylah Carroll, 21 has been hooked on music most of her life. This Mornington melody maker creates music to soothe the soul and is managed by a boutique agency in Prahran called Melodic Management. Mornington Peninsula Magazine caught up with her via FB and email while she was backpacking through Peru and Colombia! Back on the Peninsula and having completed her Bachelor of Arts, she’s ready to devote all her time to the medium she loves. Get set to hear more of Taylah in 2017. There is no time I can recall that I haven’t been in love with music and performing. When did you start singing/ playing? When I was six or seven I joined a children’s performing company, so I suppose that’s when I started singing and performing music in an organised capacity. I was putting on little shows when we had people over for dinner and performing whenever and wherever I could long before signing on to CPCA (Children’s Performing Company of Australia) though. I started piano to accompany my vocals and song writing. I started taking lessons in high school, though I only attended them sporadically and didn’t really like them. I much prefer to play by ear or to simply compose. I picked up the guitar about two years ago and have been teaching myself little bits and pieces. How do you get started on a song? Where do they come from? It depends on the song. They all come out differently. Sometimes I start with a lyric or phrase. Sometimes I write

out the whole song lyrically and find a vocal melody or I’m playing around with an instrument and find a melody that I love and a song will flow on from there. Sometimes they seem to write themselves, as though they flow through me, like a stream of consciousness. These are the ones that are often the strongest songs. What instruments do you play? I primarily play piano, but have recently been writing more on guitar. Now that I’ve finished my undergraduate degree I really want to buy an electric guitar and a synth. To play the trumpet would be amazing too, although I hear it’s super difficult. How would you describe your style? I always find this question challenging to answer and usually just say alternative, but recently a friend described it as “sad indie pop”. I think that encapsulates better than I could.

I have made many amazing friends and been given loads of opportunities to perform. Where were you brought up and where do you live now? I did my primary school years in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in Blackburn and Mt Waverley and moved to Mornington when I was 11 just before high school. I am currently based at my family home in Mornington. What’s your favourite Peninsula beach and why? Cameron’s Bite in Blairgowrie. We used to moor our boat there. It is secluded and quaint, the water is always a beautiful blue in the summer, and a tiny rickety white pier stretches into the bay from the sand.
Any favourite peninsula musicians/ artists? Ruby Whiting is one of my closest friends and creates beautiful heartfelt, wandering tunes. Harrison Storm is great. Millie Souter who did the promo artwork for my Ep launch is a wonderful visual artist too.
Do you write poetry? I started writing poetry in year seven as a form of catharsis and long before I started writing songs. The songs (not including some terrible ones written when I was about six), only really started to come out of me once I could play with instrumentation as well.
Where have you played on the Mornington Peninsula and how was the experience? I’ve played a lot at Gods Kitchen, The Bay,

How will you spend the rest of your holidays? I’m in Colombia now and I will be backpacking here for the next two and a half weeks. I then finish with a week in Mexico and will be back home with my family for the rest of the break. I intend to hug and hang out with everyone I love, walk lots, go to the beach lots, and start writing more songs. What does the future hold for you? Now that I’ve completed my BA, I’m giving myself a year or two to solely concentrate on music. I will be playing more shows, writing new music and producing a new Ep. I haven’t really thought much further than that, although I would love to go to India. Which musicians inspire you and why cover Life on Mars? I love the song! It’s my favourite Bowie song. It evokes nostalgia in me and the melody is just so lovely. My musical inspirations include Tori Amos, Sarah Blasko, Laura Marling (lyrically), and, not so much an inspiration but a new love, Julia Jacklin. She has inspired me to write lately.

The annual Western Port Festival returns on February 24-26 and with it, the Miss Western Port Pageant. Mornington Peninsula Magazine

of the February 25 judging. Miss Western Port 2017 will be announced on the RPP FM Main Stage on Saturday, February 25, 1.30pm - 2pm. The mission of the Miss Western Port Pageant is to create opportunities for local young women. Entrants are judged
on their community service involvement, ability to connect with people from all walks of life, poise, presence, interviewing skills and confidence. “She must be an allrounded woman who has a desire to make a positive impact in her community while being a positive role model to others,”

Older Mount Martha ‘gromms’ Andrew Juchnevicius, Alex Cook and Cam Myers are amazed the event is free and are suitably impressed by Rabbit’s credentials, while local 15-year-old St Andrews surfer Jett Dickinson is so chilled out he could be in a freezer. Cornish College Celebrates Five Years

Shrek and Kung-Fu Panda will light up Rosebud’s Foreshore in April at an Australian-first exhibition of some of DreamWorks Animation’s best known characters. ‘Lights by DreamWorks’ is a large-scale lantern experience. It is an interactive, walkthrough experience for all ages, it’s set to run for 30 days and it’s tipped to attract more than 300,000 visitors. You will see more than 100 DreamWorks characters brought to life and it’s previously only been seen in Chile and London. Acting Tourism and Major Events Minister Philip Dalidakis launched the ‘Lights by DreamWorks Exhibition’ at Rosebud on January 13. Modelled on the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival, ‘Lights by DreamWorks’ features huge illuminated figures from Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Madagascar. Visitors will also be treated to scenographic pieces, LED furnishings, themed technology and learning zones, an immersive cinema experience and animatronic dragons. The Andrews Labor Government is supporting the event through the $20 million Regional Events Fund, which funds the biggest events in regional Victoria. Acting Tourism and Major Events Minister Philip Dalidakis said: “The Lights by DreamWorks Exhibition is an event for the whole family. It’s also a great opportunity for visitors to explore one of Victoria’s seaside regional towns.”

Susan and Emily from the McCulloch and McCulloch Whistlewood Gallery in Shoreham work on fundraising initiatives with various educational, literacy and health organisations to further the work of Aboriginal programs. When they heard the news about the fire, they got moving. Aboriginal artist, Bawoorooga man and Gooniyandi traditional healer Claude Carter had his first show with them in conjunction with Salt Contemporary Art in Queenscliff in 2011. This social leader and teacher of Law and Culture’s work represents a sacred cave on his treasured land, the power of connectivity to it and is painted with pure Kimberley ochres that Claude mines himself. “We’ve had the privilege of representing Claude’s work for some time now. His show was a sell-out and people were very impressed by his work and modus. Claude and his wife Andrea Pindan (who is also a leading artist of Mangkaja Arts, Fitzroy Crossing) spent 16 years building their homeland community of Bawoorooga. There was an art shed, food garden, native plant nursery and a fruit orchard. The news of the fire is devastating,” explain Susan and Emily. The girls at Whistlewood have contributed to a crowd funding platform that has been set up at chuffed.org (Rebuild an Aboriginal Community that Burnt Down) by donating one of Claude’s beautiful paintings entitled Limestone Ridge at Goonboorooru Cave which has just been sold (at time of writing) for $4800. All funds go to the cause with the aim to raise $12,000. The gallery also has two additional Claude Carter works available now for purchase as every sale helps. The Lunar Chinese New Year (or Chinese Spring Festival) started on January 28 this year and it’s the Rooster’s turn to take centre stage. The Chinese zodiac attaches animal signs to each lunar year in a cycle of 12 years and is separated into 12 blocks, with each having a one-year life-span. The Rooster is 10th of the 12 animals. Supposedly the zodiac animals originated from the Han Dynasty and used to count years and signs include the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Each animal is also associated with an ‘earthly branch’ such as fire, water, metal, wood or earth. People who are born in the year of the Rooster have a fixed element of metal and are usually active, outspoken and like to be the centre of attention. That means they love a party, social gathering and FEBRUARY 2017 (63)
expect an audience to charm the pants off. They don’t get sick that often and spring back with a vengeance which is great because they love to work, work, work and are very competitive. Multi-tasking is easy for them so you’ll find them in jobs like public relations, journalism, sales and teaching. 2017 is a Fire Rooster year which only happens every 60 years. Per Chinese astrology, the year of one’s birth sign is the unluckiest year in the 12-year cycle, so Roosters will face plenty of challenges but will get through with confidence especially if they are in leadership positions. They will be highly motivated and authoritative although a bit temperamental and overdramatic at times. Diligence and pursuit of success will outshine any setbacks. Enemy Aircraft Over Port Phillip 75 Years Ago People who were out in the open on the morning of February 26, 1942, would have heard and seen a small black aircraft flying slowly over the Mornington Peninsula. It would not have occurred to them that it might be an enemy plane. Everyone knew that Japanese aircraft could not possibly reach this part of Australia. It was just too far. Singapore had surrendered almost two weeks before, but Singapore is a long way from Victoria. The raid on Pearl Harbour, however, had shown that the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) was capable of attacking targets over long distances. Few people in Victoria would have considered that the distance was greater from Japan to Pearl Harbour than from Melbourne to Rabaul, which had fallen at the end of January. Though the surprise attack on Pearl Harbour had sunk or seriously damaged 16 warships, none of the US Navy’s aircraft carriers were in the harbour that morning. The IJN needed to know where the carriers were and the location of any fleet which might be preparing to strike against it. The pilot and observer in the little black plane were here to check on Port Phillip. During WWII the IJN operated some of the largest submarines in the world, even a number which carried
aircraft in a waterproof hangar. In the early hours of February 26 one of these, the I-25, had surfaced off the north-east tip of King Island. The small Yokosuka float-plane was removed from the hangar and, a couple of hours before dawn, launched from a catapult. It flew to Cape Otway, followed the coast to Point Lonsdale then turned towards Melbourne. Crossing the Bellarine Peninsula, it passed over Portarlington and flew into a cloud-bank. To gain an idea of where he was the pilot descended to around 300m and broke out of the cloud right above the Laverton RAAF base. Because of the red roundel on the fuselage it was identified as Japanese by more than one at Laverton but it seems that no effort was made to pursue it. Continuing on his way, hiding in the clouds for a time, the pilot again dropped lower to determine his location and broke through the clouds above the anti-aircraft gun battery at Williamstown. As luck would have it, maintenance was being carried out on the guns and no shots were fired. The plane flew over Melbourne, observing the docks and ships in port, before turning to fly over St Kilda and Sandringham. It then crossed the bay to Dromana and over the Peninsula to Cape Schanck where it turned towards King Island and landed in the sea close to the submarine. It
was quickly lifted aboard, stored in its hangar and I-25 submerged and continued its reconnaissance voyage. Flights were then made over Hobart, Wellington and Auckland before I-25 returned to its base (it had flown over Sydney before coming to Melbourne). Because the flights from I-25 showed that none of these ports were sheltering a strong naval force, attacks were not made on any of them. In early April a powerful IJN force attacked Ceylon (Sri Lanka) seeking the Royal Navy’s Eastern Fleet. The distance travelled was similar to a passage to Melbourne. Had the US carriers been in Port Phillip there is no doubt they would have been attacked. In the days following the flight no mention was made in the Melbourne press. The Argus newspaper first reported it on August 20, 1945, (three years later) in an article copied from a New Zealand newspaper. Few Victorians then, or now, are aware of the day that WWII came so close. Cider secrets revealed at Red Hill Show BY LIZ ROGERS
Do you love Cider? If the answer is yes, then you’re in for something special at the Cider Marquee at the 89th Red Hill Show on March 11. Cider makers of all levels are invited to come together and compare technique, flavour and innovation in their industry. There will be New World and traditional types of Cider, Perry (alcoholic beverage made from fermented pears) and various blends will be on show and available for tasting. Head Cider maker Nyall Condon at Flying Brick Cider on the Bellarine Peninsula will oversee the experienced panel of judges from across the industry. Judging occurs on March 9 and the Cider Show culminates with a mini master class and the tastings on Red Hill Show Day, when trophies will be awarded. All Cider makers participating in the Cider Show are encouraged to promote their delicious product on the day of the Show. Entries are open for all of February and cost is $10 per entry. The whimsical world of Janine Daddo
Janine Daddo loves to create. She is constantly exploring ways to express her ideas that flow from her full-time mother and artist’s multi-coloured mind. This February sees her revelling in the Simple Pleasures of life at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza where the unassuming moments of living that “stop and make you smile” are indulged and celebrated.
If you were looking for a way to describe Janine Daddo’s vibrant and whimsical work, then perhaps contemporary figurative would be the way to go. Colour, naivety and love of living languish in scenes designed for making the viewer feel good. Her work represents her world expansively. You can see parts of this joyous painter’s spirit on the canvas and through the brush strokes that merge story, personality and acrylic paint to create a visual panacea for the jagged edges of a world well worn. “I’ve used a soft palate of colour for this series because of the ‘gentle’ moments it represents - A hot cup of tea or shower or being caressed by the ocean. things that make life worth living but can sometimes be overlooked.” This exhibition includes 15 cameo works hung as one large collection that Daddo calls her “wall of thoughts”, plus a selection of larger paintings. Janine Daddo’s art is hung in private collections across the globe and was selected to be part of the Melbourne Tram series in 2014. She also shows yearly in Singapore. She is a working artist – up at 7am each morning in her purpose-built studio in her “tree scaped” Mount Martha with her “busy head” (she also sculpts, is working with resin and is looking to produce a limited range of clothing and jewellery collaboratively). Merricks House Art Gallery at Merricks General Wine Store is delighted to be holding its second exhibition of paintings by local top artist Gee Ryan (Gerald), entitled Love One Another and Care For Our Planet. He was also a lawyer for many years. Gee explained, “My paintings are joyful and colourful. They reflect my central belief that, in order for humanity to achieve a positive and lasting future, each of us needs to live our life in accordance with two principles: love one another .. and .. care for our planet.” In 2015, one of the paintings from Gee’s Love One Another Basin series was acquired by the world-renowned Luciano Benetton Collection, based in Milan, Italy. The Australian contemporary art part of this Collection, including Gee’s painting, will be travelling to the world’s major art centres, showcasing the works of 210 established and emerging Australian painters.

The sky above Rosebud will be ablaze with colour next month as kites of every imaginable shape and size take to the air for the 13th annual Rosebud Kite Festival. This year’s festival will feature maxi kites from across mainland Australia and New Zealand. These giant kites, in the shape of sea creatures, dragons, astronauts and more, are so large they take a string of runner kites and a team of people to get them in the air and some pretty strong cabling attached to a car or two to keep them anchored to the ground. Flying high in the sky against a backdrop of blue, they never fail to impress. Bands confirmed for the main stage include Headmasters Apprentices, SugaTree, Luck-Louise and young rising stars Madison Bailey and Bridget ‘A’, and there’s a packed program of free family activities, circus workshops, kite workshops, a kids’ carnival, roving entertainment and food stalls to satisfy all ages. You’ll be able to get a preview of the maxi kite displays on Saturday, March 11, from 10am-1pm before the main event on Sunday, March 12, from 11am-5pm. The disability sector is experiencing a boost in jobs due to the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The NDIS is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs in Victoria and fund support for 105,000 people with a disability. Abbey McRae and Katie Absolom chose BRACE as their preferred training provider. Both have previously completed qualifications with BRACE, and returned earlier this year to complete their Certificate IV in Disability (CHC43115). “I wanted to change my career path and already knew from past experience that BRACE is a really good training provider. I like that it is a really welcoming environment where everyone says ‘hello’ to each other. My trainer (Susanne) also organised our practical placements, which was a big plus,” said Katie. Abbey smiled and nodded, adding “Our trainer was always available. When I needed help, I just contacted her and she always responded. I loved completing my qualification with BRACE.” Abbey and Katie are now both working for a local disability service provider. They explain that it is very rewarding working with people with disabilities. They enjoy helping people to enhance their independence and become more confident.

Since The Winey Cow opened nearly three years ago. I started as a Sous Chef and moved into Head Chef role last winter. Please tell us a little about your professional background? I started my apprenticeship straight out of Year 12 with Spotless Catering and I’ve been in the industry for nearly nine years. My career has taken me to different venues around Victoria and I am continuously building my knowledge of food. What do you love about living and working on the Mornington Peninsula? I love being able to work with fresh local produce in the cafe scene. The Peninsula provides us with great wineries, beaches and endless adventures.
What’s hot right now on The Winey Cow’s summer menu? Our summer menu has something for everyone but the real winner is our red velvet waffles with salted caramel ice cream, which has been very popular in these summer months. Tell us your favourite Peninsula past-time? Summer nights at the beach, fine foods and family times are my most fond memories on the Peninsula. What is your style in the kitchen? As is commonly known these days, growing your food at home brings many rewards. Vegetables, herbs, berries and orchard fruits all contribute to a healthy and clean diet that can get expensive when purchased through organic suppliers. Clearly for most it is not possible to be totally self sufficient with your fresh food, but there are methods to increase the intensity in the way that we produce food at home. Understanding your property and designing your food growing systems in such a way as to maximise variety and productivity is important. Building a raised bed or two in the backyard will provide you with small amounts of seasonal vegetables and herbs which will satisfy many people. There are ways though to look at your landscape that can significantly increase the amount of food that you can produce at home.
Vertical structures such as walls, fences, or screens can serve multiple functions by providing shade or wind protection for sensitive plants (or animals), while supporting climbing or trellised plants. All fences on your property can be used cleverly. For example, east facing fences can be home to trellised cane berries, climbing fruits such as kiwi or passion fruit, or a good site for your backyard chooks or other animals. North and west facing fences or walls are fantastic for hardy espaliers such as citrus, apples, pears or hardy climbers. South facing fences will cast more shade in the cooler months and are often good sites for elements in your garden that don’t want a lot of sun. Layered planting is another great technique for increasing your production. For example, instead of planting a stand alone fruit tree surrounded by mulch or grass with access all around it, familiarise yourself with the concept of “guilds”. A guild is simply a collection of plants in a finite space that can benefit each other while providing increased yields. So with a single fruit tree you could underplant with a few deciduous or evergreen small fruiting shrubs such as currants or gooseberries
and a useful groundcover such as nasturtiums or cranberries. You will still need to consider the plants requirements for light, soil type and water. And to take the “guild” concept further you can look at linking guilds and creating areas of “food forests”. When it comes to designing your property for planting, food and other, spend adequate time mapping out how much sun various areas receive on a seasonal basis, where the predominant winds come from and which areas may be naturally dry or wet. This will significantly help in your planning and reduce the number of mistakes that are made in the process. Don’t rush. Observe. Planning for increased production on your block is an exciting and inspiring experience. Lateral thinking and creativity goes a long way in structuring a sustainable and productive garden.
