THE INNOVATORS OF COMFORTâ„¢

BY ANDREA KELLETT

Nikki Osborne relaxes on the deck of her stunning McCrae home overlooking Port Phillip Bay. It’s a far cry from the film set in Brisbane where the actress spent eight weeks filming a television series about to air on Channel 7, called ‘Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story’. Nikki is a mother of two, an actress, a comedian, a Peninsula local and one of the lead characters in the new Channel 7 series, which airs Sunday, February 12, and Sunday, February 19, at 8.30pm on Channel 7 (in two parts). She plays Delvine Delaney, the beauty pageant winner who found fame on Australian television in the 1970s, became a cast member of ‘The Paul Hogan Show’ and later a co-presenter on the quiz show ‘Sale of the Century’. It’s a dream role for Nikki, who bears a remarkable likeness to Delvine. “When I heard about the role I just went ‘please’,” she says. “I love Delvine. I’ve been nicknamed Delvine in comedy shows I’ve worked on in the past. She and I had pretty similar careers, working in comedy and television.” ‘Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story’ tells the story of Paul Hogan - the almost accidental supernova of raw comedic talent who exploded onto Australia’s entertainment scene and then the world. He was a Sydney Harbour Bridge rigger with five kids who entered a TV talent contest, became a household name and an Oscar-nominated star. Embraced by Australians as ‘Hoges’, he is joined on his journey by lifelong friend, producer and sidekick John ‘Strop’ Cornell. Together they make Australians laugh then proud as one of the most successful tourism campaigns in history sells Aussie hospitality to the world. This, along with the success of ‘Crocodile Dundee’, cements Hogan’s legacy. ‘Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story’ explores the factors that shaped this success, his family life, his two great loves, divorce and his struggle with life in the public eye. Nikki’s career includes a role in Oscar-winning director Peter Bogdanovich’s US telemovie ‘The Mystery of Natalie Wood’ and appearances in award-winning television dramas such as ‘Rush’ and the Bryce Courtenay miniseries ‘Jessica’. It is in comedy, however, where she really made her presence felt. Her improvisational talents were uncovered when she hosted the live interactive game show ‘Quizmania’. Mick Molloy invited Nikki into the cast of his comedy series ‘The Nation’ and numerous guest spots on panel shows, breakfast radio and pilots followed. Nikki battled a gruelling round of auditions to secure the role of Delvine then spent eight weeks away from her family during filming. Her boys Will, 8, and Teddy, 4, have interesting thoughts on mum’s upcoming television role.

“Will’s little girlfriends at school are far more into what mummy does that he is!” she laughs. “And Teddy is worried I’m going to get stuck in the TV!” Nikki and her husband moved from Hampton to the “Ninch” seven years ago. “My husband wanted land and I wanted water so we travelled south until we found something that had both,” she says. As for juggling parenthood, a Peninsula lifestyle and a soaring career, Nikki is pretty relaxed. “Having an apartment in town would be a good crash pad but once you’ve had a taste of the ‘Ninch’ you don’t go back,” she laughs. ‘Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story’ - Sunday, February 12, and Sunday, February 19, 8.30pm on Channel 7.

Working together for your child’s future The partnership between students, school and parents is fundamental to achieving the best possible outcome for every student. At Toorak College the school community is united in a single vision; it is all about the students. To bring the best out of each student they need to learn to push the boundaries of what they believe is possible. They need to create, explore and inquire. They need to be encouraged to ask why and they need to learn to not accept what they read or are told but to challenge it. To take these risks students need to feel safe. Principal Kristy Kendall says fostering social relationships and connectedness is everyone’s responsibility - the student, school and parents - and when students feel safe they will embrace challenge. “The school culture needs to develop a growth mindset in all of our students, and our staff and parents as well, encouraging students to take risks and to understand that mistakes are an inevitable part of life that help us to grow and learn. They are not something to be avoided,” says Mrs Kendall. “At Toorak, we know that we develop sensational young people, because we understand that education isn’t about knowledge transfer any more; education is about skill development, character development and vision.” Mrs Kendall invites you to visit Toorak College at Open Day on Saturday, February 18, with tours at 9am and 11am or Discover Toorak on Wednesday, March 22, with tours at 9am and 10am. “When you see a school at work you’ll know if it’s the right school for your child.” Families will have the opportunity to speak with Mrs Kendall and key staff. Personalised Learning at Woodleigh Last year at Woodleigh, our Year 12 students earned our best ever set of VCE results. A median ATAR of 86.1 and median study score of 35 were both outstanding achievements – they were also the highest median scores of any school on the Mornington Peninsula. However, 2017 is a new year with new challenges and (some) new students to meet them. At our Woodleigh Campus, 2017 will see the consolidation of our personalised learning programs. Personalisation recognises that all children are different, and supports the fact that they will in turn learn differently and at different rates. Last year, our pilot program brought tremendous results. Students who participated reported to be more deeply engaged with their learning, taking greater ownership of their studies, as well as developing a more positive image of themselves as we better celebrated their unique achievements. We will continue our multi-award winning Homestead redevelopment program with the rebuilding of Homestead 6. This will create a fourth new-generation Homestead space – combining the pastoral, academic and social aspects of school for our students. There may be a few disruptions as the building takes shape; but as Homesteads 1, 2 and 3 have already shown, the short-term inconvenience is certainly worth it! On Saturday, February 18, we will hold our annual Scholarship Testing Morning and School Tours. I encourage all parents and students who are interested in hearing more about Woodleigh to join me at 9am for an Information Session, followed by student-led tours of our beautiful senior campus. Visit, ask questions of me and your guides, and join the dynamic learning community that is Woodleigh School. Best wishes for a safe and productive 2017, Jonathan Walter, Principal

The dos and don’ts of Dolphin watching BY LIZ ROGERS

Most of us know dolphins are social aquatic mammals that breathe through their lungs, not gills. That means they have to swim to the surface frequently to get a big gulp of air - and that means we get to see them up close and personal. Lucky us! The Department of Sustainability and Environment has drawn up guidelines to ensure these amazing creatures are left to their own devices and free from harm. Here’s some simple pointers. If you’re in a recreational boat, keep your distance. That means 100m away from the front of and behind of dolphins and 200m away from a whale. You should also leave any encounters to chance, and if you’re on a jet ski, a 300m distance is mandatory. It is illegal to deliberately position your boat in the path of dolphins, whales or seals and any illegal interactions under the Wildlife Act 1975 will result in a fine up to $6000 or a six-month prison term. Ouch! (If you’re surfing or swimming remember that dolphins, whales or seals may see you as a threat, so don’t get any closer than 30m from a dolphin or 50m from a whale). Ticonderoga Bay, from Police Point to Nepean Rock, is a protected sanctuary zone. Boats can enter (without exceeding 5knots within 200m of shore) but must always maintain their distance from dolphins. The best way to really see these creatures is to choose a licensed tour operator who is permitted to approach dolphins and seals subject to a range of strict operating conditions. Alternatively use some binoculars - and remember dolphins don’t know who you are and may feel threatened. They have been known to attack. And NEVER feed them! Some animals (remember last edition’s seagull story?) become dependent and aggressive when they don’t get what they expect. So, still want to see or swim with dolphins? Of course, you do, but be careful. And if you see any trapped, sick or injured dolphins or whales contact the Whale and Dolphin Emergency Hotline on 1300 136 017 or the Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Customer Service Centre for seals or penguins on 136 186. Respect your local wildlife. It’s the only one we’ve got.

Youth Dressage Championships, What an Event! BY DANA KRAUSE

Fiona Selby’s magnificent world class facility Boneo Park was immaculately turned out for The Ellanbrae Park 2017 Youth Dressage Championships - a competition for riders aged 10-25 years. About 150 riders competed over three days from Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and even New Zealand. The talent of both riders and horses was phenomenal, some of which are sure to represent Australia on the international stage in the future. Dressage is often described as ballet on horseback and spectators were not disappointed as they were entertained by some of the most graceful young riders and horses in Australia. This was also the first year that interschool classes where included, supported by Toorak College, making this event inclusive of all dressage riders.

Alicia Ryan, Morgan Duell, Allysse Smith, Jordan Smith and Stuart Archibald

Jessica Hivon and Garraboo Scoobie Doo

Samantha Bingham and Richfeild won the Medium Pony; and Fern Wright, riding Kamber Pryderi, won the FEI U25 Grand Prix. The weather improved on day three and the final state championship winners were: Jemma Dodd from South Australia, once again riding Class Capture, won the Preliminary Pony; Melissa Galloway riding BWS Cabaret, from New Zealand, won the Preliminary Horse; Jessica Hivon (bottom left) from Victoria on Garraboo Scoobie Doo, won the FEI Junior Tour; Morgan Duell and Florinzz, from Victoria, won the FEI Medium Tour; Amy Bacchman from Victoria, riding Heritage Park Chartreuse, won the FEI Pony Tour; Amy Reilly riding Michar, from NSW, won the FEI Small Tour; and the picture perfect combination Charlie Welsh, riding W Esther De Jeu, from Victoria won FEI Young Rider Tour.

Dressage is a tough sport that requires dedication not only of the young riders who compete but also their families and the support of the judges, volunteers and sponsors. More at www.vydc.com.au

Claire Plenty and Queensland The state champions of day one included: Brooke Mance riding Fairbanks Ringo, from Victoria, won the Elementary Pony; Samantha Coleshill from South Australia, riding Tarrendene Forte, won the Elementary Horse; Alicia Ryan from Victoria, on Bluefields Furstentanz, won the Advanced Horse; and Fern Wright on Kamber Pryderi, from Victoria, won the FEI Inter II Horse. The state championships of day two were: Haylea Wright on Stanmore Park Ruby, from Victoria, won the Novice Horse; Jemma Dodd from South Australia, riding Class Capture, won the Novice Pony; Nicole Berry riding Euroz Jinks, from South Australia, won the Medium Horse; Allysse Smith from Victoria, on the imported Keilshoop Honeyhill,

If I can plant a seed in just one of these kids’ minds that there are possibilities out there, it’s been worth it.” The easy going My Kitchen Rules judge has been emergency relief volunteering in Dingley once a week and will be in a school in Frankston North mentoring kids one on one from February onwards. “I also fundraise for the children’s hospice Very Special Kids,” she continues, and as the rain begins to thrash the sand and sea, she tells me she’s turned her hand to distributing sailing apparel with her husband David Andrew. “I’m not a sailor, but David is mad for it, so somehow we’ve got a bedroom full of British made Rooster sailing kit! It’s a bit of fun and the brand is affordable” – Egan and Andrew like supporting club sailors and are members at Mount Martha – “We’ve taken it on and there’s a lovely tailored line for women.” Check out the website sailingkit.com.au for more info. “I’m really looking forward to the camp at Before we wrap it up, I ask Egan how her squid fishing has been Ferngully Lodge in Healesville. Following on from our Lovin’ Life on the Peninsula story in the January edition, Mornington Peninsula Magazine thought you’d like to know more about Liz Egan’s connection with our coast, cooking with local produce and creating long lasting ties with kids who’ve had a rough start. I caught up with this petit blond haired go-getter one stormy afternoon and, as the cumulonimbus nudged its way from the hazy horizon towards us, I found out that my namesake is smart, funny and very determined to make a difference.

EASY EGAN QUICK SUMMER STARTER RECIPE

Liz says: ‘This is my fave quick salad and serves four as a starter, or you can cut the prawns and potatoes smaller and serve in little glasses with drinks. If I’m serving this to guests I’ll keep out four prawns and place one on top of each serve. It’s also good served on a bed of shredded and lightly dressed iceberg lettuce.’ Yum! TIP- Keep any oil the chorizo drops and use when next making a pasta or frittata.

TAYLAH CARROLL FINDING HER MELODY BY LIZ ROGERS media and communications. Philosophy filled my electives and is my true love within the realm of academia.

Taylah Carroll, 21 has been hooked on music most of her life. This Mornington melody maker creates music to soothe the soul and is managed by a boutique agency in Prahran called Melodic Management. Mornington Peninsula Magazine caught up with her via FB and email while she was backpacking through Peru and Colombia! Back on the Peninsula and having completed her Bachelor of Arts, she’s ready to devote all her time to the medium she loves. Get set to hear more of Taylah in 2017. Follow her at TaylahCarrollMusic on FB or on Instagram @taylahcarrollmusic to see how. Have you always been a musician? There is no time I can recall that I haven’t been in love with music and performing. When did you start singing/ playing? When I was six or seven I joined a children’s performing company, so I suppose that’s when I started singing and performing music in an organised capacity. I was putting on little shows when we had people over for dinner and performing whenever and wherever I could long before signing on to CPCA (Children’s Performing Company of Australia) though. I started piano to accompany my vocals and song writing. I started taking lessons in high school, though I only attended them sporadically and didn’t really like them. I much prefer to play by ear or to simply compose. I picked up the guitar about two years ago and have been teaching myself little bits and pieces. How do you get started on a song? Where do they come from? It depends on the song. They all come out differently. Sometimes I start with a lyric or phrase. Sometimes I write

out the whole song lyrically and find a vocal melody or I’m playing around with an instrument and find a melody that I love and a song will flow on from there. Sometimes they seem to write themselves, as though they flow through me, like a stream of consciousness. These are the ones that are often the strongest songs. What instruments do you play? I primarily play piano, but have recently been writing more on guitar. Now that I’ve finished my undergraduate degree I really want to buy an electric guitar and a synth. To play the trumpet would be amazing too, although I hear it’s super difficult. How would you describe your style? I always find this question challenging to answer and usually just say alternative, but recently a friend described it as “sad indie pop”. I think that encapsulates better than I could.

Portsea Pub and venues of the like. It’s been great playing on the Peninsula and being a part of the music scene here. I have made many amazing friends and been given loads of opportunities to perform. Where were you brought up and where do you live now? I did my primary school years in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in Blackburn and Mt Waverley and moved to Mornington when I was 11 just before high school. I am currently based at my family home in Mornington. What’s your favourite Peninsula beach and why? Cameron’s Bite in Blairgowrie. We used to moor our boat there. It is secluded and quaint, the water is always a beautiful blue in the summer, and a tiny rickety white pier stretches into the bay from the sand.

Any favourite peninsula musicians/ artists? Ruby Whiting is one of my closest friends and creates beautiful heartfelt, wandering tunes. Harrison Storm is great. Millie Souter who did the promo artwork for my Ep launch is a wonderful visual artist too.

Do you write poetry? I started writing poetry in year seven as a form of catharsis and long before I started writing songs. The songs (not including some terrible ones written when I was about six), only really started to come out of me once I could play with instrumentation as well.

Where have you played on the Mornington Peninsula and how was the experience? I’ve played a lot at Gods Kitchen, The Bay,

What course are you doing at Melbourne University? I just completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in psychology and Minoring in

How will you spend the rest of your holidays? I’m in Colombia now and I will be backpacking here for the next two and a half weeks. I then finish with a week in Mexico and will be back home with my family for the rest of the break. I intend to hug and hang out with everyone I love, walk lots, go to the beach lots, and start writing more songs. What does the future hold for you? Now that I’ve completed my BA, I’m giving myself a year or two to solely concentrate on music. I will be playing more shows, writing new music and producing a new Ep. I haven’t really thought much further than that, although I would love to go to India. Which musicians inspire you and why cover Life on Mars? I love the song! It’s my favourite Bowie song. It evokes nostalgia in me and the melody is just so lovely. My musical inspirations include Tori Amos, Sarah Blasko, Laura Marling (lyrically), and, not so much an inspiration but a new love, Julia Jacklin. She has inspired me to write lately.

More than 370 guests attended the 2016 event and organisers expect an even bigger crowd this year. The speakers are Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell and Susan Berg, author of ‘The Girl Who Lived’.

Eight new poles have been installed along the Dreaming Trail at the George Pentland Botanic Gardens in Frankston. The ironbark poles, replacing ones that had succumbed to weather and white ants, tell the Boonwurrung people’s story of the Mornington Peninsula’s creation: “A long time ago, Bunjil the eagle asked Mindi the snake to help create the land. Mindi was the one that created the rivers and valleys and now she lays waiting beneath the Peninsula. The Mindi path is a reminder that creation is precious and that we must respect and care for mother earth.” Photos: Mark Calleja ( 26

Travellers advised to seek an adviser Smart travellers know the key to an outstanding trip is partnering with a travel adviser. And people who work with advisers such as the staff at Peninsula Travel, a member of leading luxury travel agency network Virtuoso®, say trips planned with an adviser’s guidance are better than those organised without them. Here are just three reasons why: 1. Personalised planning: Whether you’re the do-it-yourself type or want someone else to take the reins, when you collaborate with a travel adviser, your trips will be tailored to your interests and budget. 2. Global expertise and connections: Not only do Virtuoso travel advisers have extensive personal knowledge of destinations and products around the world, they have relationships with global partners who can arrange exclusive experiences to make a trip truly extraordinary. 3. Value: A Virtuoso adviser has access to the same (and often better) pricing than you can find online and can secure special perks like complimentary room upgrades that you can’t get on your own. “People who are overwhelmed and dissatisfied with the glut of online information now crave the human connection,” said Peninsula Travel director Michele Saunderson. “Once they partner with one of our travel advisers, they wonder why they didn’t do it sooner.” PENINSULA TRAVEL A: 9 Bay Rd, Mount Martha T: 5974 3911 E: Admin@peninsulatravel.com.au

Older Mount Martha ‘gromms’ Andrew Juchnevicius, Alex Cook and Cam Myers are amazed the event is free and are suitably impressed by Rabbit’s credentials, while local 15-year-old St Andrews surfer Jett Dickinson is so chilled out he could be in a freezer. Cornish College Celebrates Five Years

Cornish College is preparing to celebrate its five-year Foundation Day on February 16. The college opened in 2012 as a new co-educational independent school with 220 students. Almost five years on the school is welcoming 700 students from ELC to Year 12 in 2017. Principal Vicki Steer said the event would be a chance for everyone who had been involved in the college’s growth to celebrate. “The story of the foundation of Cornish College is one of community persistence and vision,” Ms Steer said. “Our school thrives today because of our community’s belief in our educational philosophy of preparing students for life. We recognise the importance of academic rigour, creativity and developing strong foundation skills for learning.” Despite the growth in student numbers, Cornish College is still a medium-sized co-educational school where students are known and learning is personalised and engaging. Cornish College’s motto is “Make a Difference” and at its core is the development of independence, compassion and personal excellence in order for students to make a positive contribution within their community and globally. Students come from a wide range of bayside and Peninsula regions, with the school’s extensive private bus services covering the regions, including Frankston, Frankston South and Mount Eliza. Cornish College welcomes interested families to an Open Morning on Wednesday, March 8, from 10am to 1pm. Shrek and Kung-Fu Panda will light up Rosebud’s Foreshore in April at an Australian-first exhibition of some of DreamWorks Animation’s best known characters. ‘Lights by DreamWorks’ is a large-scale lantern experience. It is an interactive, walkthrough experience for all ages, it’s set to run for 30 days and it’s tipped to attract more than 300,000 visitors. You will see more than 100 DreamWorks characters brought to life and it’s previously only been seen in Chile and London. Acting Tourism and Major Events Minister Philip Dalidakis launched the ‘Lights by DreamWorks Exhibition’ at Rosebud on January 13. Modelled on the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival, ‘Lights by DreamWorks’ features huge illuminated figures from Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Madagascar. Visitors will also be treated to scenographic pieces, LED furnishings, themed technology and learning zones, an immersive cinema experience and animatronic dragons. The Andrews Labor Government is supporting the event through the $20 million Regional Events Fund, which funds the biggest events in regional Victoria. Acting Tourism and Major Events Minister Philip Dalidakis said: “The Lights by DreamWorks Exhibition is an event for the whole family. It’s also a great opportunity for visitors to explore one of Victoria’s seaside regional towns.”

Not a great way to ring in the New Year, right? Susan and Emily from the McCulloch and McCulloch Whistlewood Gallery in Shoreham work on fundraising initiatives with various educational, literacy and health organisations to further the work of Aboriginal programs. When they heard the news about the fire, they got moving. Aboriginal artist, Bawoorooga man and Gooniyandi traditional healer Claude Carter had his first show with them in conjunction with Salt Contemporary Art in Queenscliff in 2011. This social leader and teacher of Law and Culture’s work represents a sacred cave on his treasured land, the power of connectivity to it and is painted with pure Kimberley ochres that Claude mines himself. “We’ve had the privilege of representing Claude’s work for some time now. His show was a sell-out and people were very impressed by his work and modus. Claude and his wife Andrea Pindan (who is also a leading artist of Mangkaja Arts, Fitzroy Crossing) spent 16 years building their homeland community of Bawoorooga. There was an art shed, food garden, native plant nursery and a fruit orchard. The news of the fire is devastating,” explain Susan and Emily. The girls at Whistlewood have contributed to a crowd funding platform that has been set up at chuffed.org (Rebuild an Aboriginal Community that Burnt Down) by donating one of Claude’s beautiful paintings entitled Limestone Ridge at Goonboorooru Cave which has just been sold (at time of writing) for $4800. All funds go to the cause with the aim to raise $12,000. The gallery also has two additional Claude Carter works available now for purchase as every sale helps. The Lunar Chinese New Year (or Chinese Spring Festival) started on January 28 this year and it’s the Rooster’s turn to take centre stage. The Chinese zodiac attaches animal signs to each lunar year in a cycle of 12 years and is separated into 12 blocks, with each having a one-year life-span. The Rooster is 10th of the 12 animals. Supposedly the zodiac animals originated from the Han Dynasty and used to count years and signs include the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Each animal is also associated with an ‘earthly branch’ such as fire, water, metal, wood or earth. People who are born in the year of the Rooster have a fixed element of metal and are usually active, outspoken and like to be the centre of attention. That means they love a party, social gathering and FEBRUARY 2017 (63)

expect an audience to charm the pants off. They don’t get sick that often and spring back with a vengeance which is great because they love to work, work, work and are very competitive. Multi-tasking is easy for them so you’ll find them in jobs like public relations, journalism, sales and teaching. 2017 is a Fire Rooster year which only happens every 60 years. Per Chinese astrology, the year of one’s birth sign is the unluckiest year in the 12-year cycle, so Roosters will face plenty of challenges but will get through with confidence especially if they are in leadership positions. They will be highly motivated and authoritative although a bit temperamental and overdramatic at times. Diligence and pursuit of success will outshine any setbacks. So, watch out the rest of you - The Roosters are getting ready to make some noise. Cock-a-doodle-do! www.morningtonpeninsulamagazine.com.au

Enemy Aircraft Over Port Phillip 75 Years Ago People who were out in the open on the morning of February 26, 1942, would have heard and seen a small black aircraft flying slowly over the Mornington Peninsula. It would not have occurred to them that it might be an enemy plane. Everyone knew that Japanese aircraft could not possibly reach this part of Australia. It was just too far. Singapore had surrendered almost two weeks before, but Singapore is a long way from Victoria. The raid on Pearl Harbour, however, had shown that the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) was capable of attacking targets over long distances. Few people in Victoria would have considered that the distance was greater from Japan to Pearl Harbour than from Melbourne to Rabaul, which had fallen at the end of January. Though the surprise attack on Pearl Harbour had sunk or seriously damaged 16 warships, none of the US Navy’s aircraft carriers were in the harbour that morning. The IJN needed to know where the carriers were and the location of any fleet which might be preparing to strike against it. The pilot and observer in the little black plane were here to check on Port Phillip. During WWII the IJN operated some of the largest submarines in the world, even a number which carried

aircraft in a waterproof hangar. In the early hours of February 26 one of these, the I-25, had surfaced off the north-east tip of King Island. The small Yokosuka float-plane was removed from the hangar and, a couple of hours before dawn, launched from a catapult. It flew to Cape Otway, followed the coast to Point Lonsdale then turned towards Melbourne. Crossing the Bellarine Peninsula, it passed over Portarlington and flew into a cloud-bank. To gain an idea of where he was the pilot descended to around 300m and broke out of the cloud right above the Laverton RAAF base. Because of the red roundel on the fuselage it was identified as Japanese by more than one at Laverton but it seems that no effort was made to pursue it. Continuing on his way, hiding in the clouds for a time, the pilot again dropped lower to determine his location and broke through the clouds above the anti-aircraft gun battery at Williamstown. As luck would have it, maintenance was being carried out on the guns and no shots were fired. The plane flew over Melbourne, observing the docks and ships in port, before turning to fly over St Kilda and Sandringham. It then crossed the bay to Dromana and over the Peninsula to Cape Schanck where it turned towards King Island and landed in the sea close to the submarine. It

was quickly lifted aboard, stored in its hangar and I-25 submerged and continued its reconnaissance voyage. Flights were then made over Hobart, Wellington and Auckland before I-25 returned to its base (it had flown over Sydney before coming to Melbourne). Because the flights from I-25 showed that none of these ports were sheltering a strong naval force, attacks were not made on any of them. In early April a powerful IJN force attacked Ceylon (Sri Lanka) seeking the Royal Navy’s Eastern Fleet. The distance travelled was similar to a passage to Melbourne. Had the US carriers been in Port Phillip there is no doubt they would have been attacked. In the days following the flight no mention was made in the Melbourne press. The Argus newspaper first reported it on August 20, 1945, (three years later) in an article copied from a New Zealand newspaper. Few Victorians then, or now, are aware of the day that WWII came so close. BY MAURIE HUTCHINSON President, Peninsula Ship Society T: Maurie Hutchinson (pres) 9787 5780 The Peninsula Ship Society meets at Hastings Yacht Club on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 10am. Visitors always welcome.

time. It’s a unique period of student growth and development,” explains Mrs Muriel Bakker, Head of the Middle Years’ ‘Becoming Me’ program. “This is when we extend our students’ academic skills, promote personal development and encourage responsible citizenship through a variety of learning experiences.” The School believes that co-educational and single gender classes for Mathematics and English in these years, combined with a targeted teaching approach, provides the optimal learning environment for students in this age group. Head of Student Wellbeing, Mrs Lyn Bylart explains. “This approach, which also offers enhanced pastoral care through House-based mentoring, understands the social,

emotional and physical changes that occur at this time. It ensures every student has what they need to flourish and promotes positive relationships between boys and girls as they mature.” The program includes interdisciplinary learning across a range of academic areas and an extensive outdoor education program and starts to prepare students for their transition into the all-important Senior Years. A PERFECT FIT Less than three months after opening, Balnarringym has reached its target of 300 members. “The fact that we are open 24 hours every day has been a big factor,” said manager Tiffany Jukes. “For example, a lot of tradies tend to use the gym early in the morning, whereas some mums are coming around 8pm after the kids are in bed. Shift workers also appreciate the 24/7. Retirees seem to enjoy working out during the quieter times of the day. We’re finding a lot of young lads are getting fit for the football season in the gym after work.” Tiffany’s colleague, Brendan Potter, added: “The wide variety of fitness equipment is a real plus. The sled run, the battle rope and the boxing circuit

are all proving popular. The True Stretch Frame is also in great demand. And with the snow season approaching, our new True Traverse Lateral Trainer (pictured), which increases the muscle on the outside of thighs, is also in high demand.” The True Traverse is a revolutionary piece of cardio equipment that combines the motions of a stepper, elliptical and treadmill all in one, allowing users to achieve a more complete workout in a fraction of the time spent on traditional cardio pieces. In the relatively short time Elm Hair has been in Balnarring it has been quick to make an impression. Owned and operated by sisters Emily

and Laura Mayle and from whose initials it takes its name, Elm opened in a small boutique salon and soon gained a reputation for service and quality, rapidly building its client base and realising the need to expand to a more suitable space. A week before last Christmas, Emily and Laura moved to their new premises, which they have fitted out to the highest standards. This has created an environment not before seen in Balnarring - as soon as you walk through the beautiful curved copper entrance you know Elm Hair was purpose-built and designed to give clients the best experience in hair possible. As well as providing the full range of salon services and spray tans, Emily and Laura will soon be introducing beauty services and are also looking for another qualified hairdresser to join their team. “It will be a very special night that celebrates the making of the epic film ‘Putuparri and the Rainmakers’ by film director Nicole Ma and the work by artists of the art centre responsible for its making,” says Whistlewood’s codirector Susan McCulloch. ‘Putuparri and the Rainmakers’ is an award-winning documentary that spans 20 transformative years in the young Kimberley man Tom ‘Putuparri’ Lawford’s life as he re-engages with his grandfather who is a ceremonial ‘rainmaker’. Lawford and his grandfather go on a series of epic journeys to their family’s stunning and remote Great Sandy Desert country as he navigates the deep chasm between his largely Western upbringing and his traditional culture. Set against the backdrop of the long fight to reclaim their traditional lands, ‘Putuparri and the Exhibition opening, film screening and in conversation: Saturday, February 18, 6-9.30pm. Since, their work has developed a soft luminescence that makes it quite distinctive. FEBRUARY 2017 (63)

‘Simple Pleasures’

By Janine Daddo

The whimsical world of Janine Daddo

Janine Daddo loves to create. She is constantly exploring ways to express her ideas that flow from her full-time mother and artist’s multi-coloured mind. This February sees her revelling in the Simple Pleasures of life at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza where the unassuming moments of living that “stop and make you smile” are indulged and celebrated.

If you were looking for a way to describe Janine Daddo’s vibrant and whimsical work, then perhaps contemporary figurative would be the way to go. Colour, naivety and love of living languish in scenes designed for making the viewer feel good. Her work represents her world expansively. You can see parts of this joyous painter’s spirit on the canvas and through the brush strokes that merge story, personality and acrylic paint to create a visual panacea for the jagged edges of a world well worn. “I’ve used a soft palate of colour for this series because of the ‘gentle’ moments it represents - A hot cup of tea or shower or being caressed by the ocean. Simple FEBRUARY 2017 (63)

things that make life worth living but can sometimes be overlooked.” This exhibition includes 15 cameo works hung as one large collection that Daddo calls her “wall of thoughts”, plus a selection of larger paintings. Janine Daddo’s art is hung in private collections across the globe and was selected to be part of the Melbourne Tram series in 2014. She also shows yearly in Singapore. She is a working artist – up at 7am each morning in her purpose-built studio in her “tree scaped” Mount Martha with her “busy head” (she also sculpts, is working with resin and is looking to produce a limited range of clothing and jewellery collaboratively). Head into the ground breaking and beautiful Manyung Gallery in the village Mount Eliza to view (and select) your own Daddo piece of joy this February. And experience happiness. ROSEBUD

KITE FESTIVAL

The sky above Rosebud will be ablaze with colour next month as kites of every imaginable shape and size take to the air for the 13th annual Rosebud Kite Festival. This year’s festival will feature maxi kites from across mainland Australia and New Zealand. These giant kites, in the shape of sea creatures, dragons, astronauts and more, are so large they take a string of runner kites and a team of people to get them in the air and some pretty strong cabling attached to a car or two to keep them anchored to the ground. Flying high in the sky against a backdrop of blue, they never fail to impress. Bands confirmed for the main stage include Headmasters Apprentices, SugaTree, Luck-Louise and young rising stars Madison Bailey and Bridget ‘A’, and there’s a packed program of free family activities, circus workshops, kite workshops, a kids’ carnival, roving entertainment and food stalls to satisfy all ages. You’ll be able to get a preview of the maxi kite displays on Saturday, March 11, from 10am-1pm before the main event on Sunday, March 12, from 11am-5pm. For more information on the festival, which is brought to you by the Rosebud Chamber of Commerce, go to www.rosebudkitefestival.com. au or phone 0403 889 559.

award winning duo The Robertson Brothers play the magical sounds of The Everly Brothers and singing superstar Scot Robin plays the role of Buddy Holly. The Roberston Brothers are one of Australia’s leading vocal groups, best known as providing the vocals on the theme song for TV soapie ‘Home & Away’. They have toured the world with international acts such as The Eagles, America, John Denver, ELO

and more. They also featured in the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Ben and Geoff Robertson have performed in Frankston as the Everly Brothers three times and, speaking with Mornington Peninsula Magazine from Sydney, Ben said he loved the venue. “Frankston is unreal,” he said. “The audience is always very supportive.” Expect the hits that made The Everly Brothers the legends they are including ‘Bye Bye Love’, ‘Wake Up Little Susie’, ‘All I Have To Do Is Dream’, ‘Bird Dog’, ‘Let It Be Me’, ‘(Til) I Kissed You’, ‘Cathy’s Clown’, ‘Crying In The Rain’ and ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Scot Robin will showcase Buddy Holly’s hits including ‘That’ll Be The Day’, ‘Peggy Sue’, ‘Raining In My Heart’, ‘Rave On’, ‘Maybe Baby’, ‘It’s So Easy’, ‘Everyday’ and many more. This international production is tipped to have audiences dancing in the aisles. Tickets: artscentre. frankston.vic.gov.au

Bronwyn has helped thousands of women banish unsightly and unhealthy cellulite over the past 27 years and her book ‘Cellulite Free Me’ has educated and helped women around the world lose their cellulite for good. Bronwyn has “never met a bottom I can’t fix” or a client who doesn’t lose weight on her treatment. She assesses the client’s cellulite situation and her treatment combines blended plant hormones in aromatherapy oils with massage and body brushing. Cellulite, Bronwyn explains, is an external sign that something is wrong with your internal systems and organs. “Women know we’re not meant to have it,” she explains. “You can have liposuction but if your body isn’t eliminating toxins, it will keep producing cellulite.” “I will stop what is causing your cellulite and then get rid of your cellulite lumps permanently.” Call 0457 495 325 for a consultation. It’s not often that low prices and high quality go hand in hand. More often than not, low prices come at the expense of quality. But it’s not always so. Here on the Mornington Peninsula we are treated to high-quality diamonds at prices around half that of retail. That’s great news to many of us who are in the market for a diamond engagement ring or perhaps some diamond studs or a tennis bracelet. Sure, diamonds will never be listed under affordable fashion, but when the time does come to buy something special, go see Anthony Hansen at Diamond Coco. Diamond Coco has been in business for 10 years and operates a little differently to the typical jewellery store. But we won’t spoil the surprise. This is a go-getter month for the Rams of the Zodiac. You have plenty of zest when it comes to pursuing your hopes, dreams and wishes. You are more social than usual and may take up a new group activity. This is an excellent time to set goals.

An Eclipse occurs in your Zodiac Sign heralding good news. Something positive is coming and you are likely to welcome its arrival with open arms. It is also time to turn your attention a little to your relationship status. Partnership issues arise if you focus only on yourself.

Your social diary is likely to be full. Your mind is active and you are likely to reach out to neighbours, groups and clubs so that you keep your thoughts positive and your activities fun-filled. In particular you seek like-minded associations. This is your month to be spontaneous.

Cancer Why are Cancerians sometimes moody? It is

because you are so intricately linked with the cycles of the Moon and therefore connected to the ebb and flow of emotions. It is time to tune into these patterns. Acknowledge the cycles of the Moon and the correspondences in your own life.

Scorpio Family life is busy this month. This is true

whether you live on your own or with others. This is also an opportune period during which to adopt healthier habits. Physical activities that provide an outlet for excess energy and propel you on the road to better health are beneficial this month.

The disability sector is experiencing a boost in jobs due to the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The NDIS is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs in Victoria and fund support for 105,000 people with a disability. Abbey McRae and Katie Absolom chose BRACE as their preferred training provider. Both have previously completed qualifications with BRACE, and returned earlier this year to complete their Certificate IV in Disability (CHC43115). “I wanted to change my career path and already knew from past experience that BRACE is a really good training provider. I like that it is a really welcoming environment where everyone says ‘hello’ to each other. My trainer (Susanne) also organised our practical placements, which was a big plus,” said Katie. Abbey smiled and nodded, adding “Our trainer was always available. When I needed help, I just contacted her and she always responded. I loved completing my qualification with BRACE.” Abbey and Katie are now both working for a local disability service provider. They explain that it is very rewarding working with people with disabilities. They enjoy helping people to enhance their independence and become more confident.

With the wealth of knowledge available at our fingertips and access to a huge range of supportive services, there has never been a better time to start a business - and Frankston has been named one of the leading places in Victoria to make that happen. The launch of the inaugural Big Small Business Expo combines the essential ingredients required for a successful start-up. Jo Schutt and Emily Jones had been running their separate businesses for several years before joining forces to create The Garden in

Frankston and both agree there is nothing more effective in terms of growing a business than face-toface networking and authentic relationship-building. Their vast experience in events and passion for business development has lead them to create Frankston’s first large-scale event where local startups, SMEs and entrepreneurs could find inspiration, discover innovative business tools and potential businesses owners with whom to collaborate. The Big Small Business Expo is on March 22 at Functions by the Bay in

Frankston and will include an expo with spaces for 50 sponsors and exhibitors, a conference with six high-profile keynote speakers and a networking event in the evening. Do you have a will? Standard Will $125.00 (plus GST) each.

Last November, I had a great idea. I would launch the inaugural Regional Business Women’s Day on February 6 via a documentary about regional businesswomen while going on a 3321km road trip from Geelong to Townsville. Oh and taking 2 businesswomen, 2 babies and a video camera with me. All we needed was an automotive sponsor, accommodation in 8 locations, venues and speakers and to cover it with an $8000 crowd funding campaign. And we had five weeks to do it.

Power of Attorney $100.00 (plus GST) each.

Was I scared we wouldn’t achieve these crazy goals? I had half a day of freaking out at one point but otherwise, no. As the great Sir Richard Branson says, ‘You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.’

If not, or if your Will needs reviewing, let me help you.

How to feel the fear and do it anyway

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

If your fear is holding you back from achieving your goals, try this: 1. R emind yourself of your why. Why are you doing what you do and who are you doing it for? If your crazy goals will serve others, keep going. 2. I s this goal you’ve set for yourself achievable? If you can break down what you need to do and when you need to do it and stick to your plan, you can achieve it. 3. T here’s no such thing as failure. If it doesn’t turn out, try another way using what you’ve learnt from the experience. Real growth comes from being out of your comfort zone. 4. B elieve in yourself, no matter what the non-supporters say! 5. V isualise your goals. Top performing athletes use the technique of positive visualisation before doing it in real life. You can too.

Then think Woodman Estate Fine Foods. All products are made onsite in the kitchen at the Woodman Estate Luxury Country House in Moorooduc. Most of the ingredients are sourced directly from Mornington Peninsula growers and cooked in small batches in traditional open copper pans. There are no factories, no artificial ingredients and no mass-scale production. The result - beautiful

soft set preserves achieved with absolutely no additional setting agents. Woodman Estate Fine Foods won four medals at the 2016 Australian Food Awards - Australia’s leading national premium food awards program. Wonderful flavours to be awarded include Rhubarb & Ginger / Spiced Pear / Peach & Cardamom / Raspberry & Boysenberry. Modern Greek cuisine in the heart of McCrae! Ooopa! Alatonero (saltwater in Greek) is the newest offering from hospitality duo Zac and Jacqui Poulier, from the renowned Stillwater at Crittenden and Freshwater Catering. Alatonero (saltwater in Greek) is the newest offering from hospitality duo Zac and Jacqui Poulier, from the renowned Stillwater at Crittenden and Freshwater Catering.

As always with the Pouliers, local produce is the menu hero and all seafood and meat is Australian and only the finest quality. Alatonero is the perfect backdrop for weddings and special events, with stunning food and wines and exclusive access to the venue. With literally thousands of beautiful weddings under their belts at both Stillwater and Freshwater Catering, Zac and Jacqui are now offering their unique touch on weddings at Alatonero. Dates are filling up very quickly for the season ahead, so book your site inspection with one of their highly experienced event managers.

Formally the McCrae Pavilion, the venue received a significant makeover before opening mid October, to rave reviews. Crisp white and royal blue are the distinctive colours used to create a restaurant oozing seaside and Mediterranean flavour.

There are Greek and local wines, tap beer, cocktails as well as a full range of other beverages. Bookings are taken in the dining room, however the same menu is available throughout the venue.

The menu is full of Greek delights made to share, with a modern twist. Think mezze such as chargrilled octopus with fava and dill, goat cigars with pomegranate glaze and favourites such as saganaki and dips to start. Follow this with large plates such as whole fish, spit roasted free range meats and traditional moussaka.

Yasu!

FOOD WINE PRODUCE

BY LIZ ROGERS

The Hart of Tyabb’s chef Dean Caldwell has been in the kitchen for as long as he can remember, helping his mother and grandmother make fabulous food. As a result, at only 25, he instinctively knows what flavours combine to produce taste that inspires and delights. This summer sees Dean’s cooking instincts come alive with rotating specials – think duck breast, scallops or clams, pork sliders or pork and chilli dumplings – all made from scratch and fresh local ingredients. Intensive experimentation and love of produce means you’ll always find four specials on the board including soup, seafood and salad, and all Caldwell’s condiments and sauces are authentic (he’s even been known to come out of the kitchen and chat with a food intolerant customer and whip up something they can eat). The Hart of Tyabb is the ideal weekend spot for coffee and cake made by Caldwell’s Mum too. Drop by for a treat and stay for the down to earth atmosphere. A CHAT WITH MORNINGTON PENINSULA FOOD, WINE & DINING EXPERTS Nathan Witting, Head Chef at The Winey Cow, Main Street, Mornington BY ANDREA KELLETT How long have you worked at The Winey Cow? Since The Winey Cow opened nearly three years ago. I started as a Sous Chef and moved into Head Chef role last winter. Please tell us a little about your professional background? I started my apprenticeship straight out of Year 12 with Spotless Catering and I’ve been in the industry for nearly nine years. My career has taken me to different venues around Victoria and I am continuously building my knowledge of food. What do you love about living and working on the Mornington Peninsula? I love being able to work with fresh local produce in the cafe scene. The Peninsula provides us with great wineries, beaches and endless adventures.

What’s hot right now on The Winey Cow’s summer menu? Our summer menu has something for everyone but the real winner is our red velvet waffles with salted caramel ice cream, which has been very popular in these summer months. Tell us your favourite Peninsula past-time? Summer nights at the beach, fine foods and family times are my most fond memories on the Peninsula. What is your style in the kitchen? I’m quite the perfectionist and my style relies on fresh local ingredients treated with love. I also like putting a quirky modern spin on old favorites. The Winey Cow is at 39A Main St, Mornington

Take a trip down memory lane or journey into the contemporary world of cinema and television with Silver Screen at Tyabb Packing House Antiques. This little gem of a movie memorabilia spot has something for anyone who is passionate about movies or television and everything they encompass. Owner Greg Chilvers and his team (Christine and Michelle) know their stuff. Connect with all your favourite old television shows – think Batman and Robin, The Lone Ranger or Thunderbirds or trawl through the huge range of horror, Sci-fi, classical, musical, drama, romance or thriller titles on tap. Greg has been collecting movie posters since he was eight years old (the original Walt Disney Peter Pan poster hanging on the wall is life size and magical). He moved on to amassing antiques and returned 25 years ago to Silver Screen at Tyabb Packing House Antiques to offer movie enthusiasts a huge range of screen collectables. He also loves a chat and provides his clients with sensational

cinema studies sessions free of charge – he’s spent years reading and researching the topic! Originality is the order of the day at Silver Screen and there’s something for all generations. Greg specialises in unique, old and modern movie posters and has the largest collection in the country. He also stocks the coolest comics, a range of limited edition figurines (think Star Wars, Pop! Vinyl toys and Game of Thrones collectables) and life sized movie figures such as a Star Wars Darth Vader, Yoda and Spiderman – and he’s the agent for Sideshow and Hot Toys Collectables. Bring your family and friends into Silver Screen for a front row seat at the Peninsula’s main attraction movie memorabilia show, and be taken back to a time when lights, camera and action were three very big words indeed. Keep your cool with DCB Purchasing window coverings from Dollar Curtains & Blinds is a great way to enhance your interior design scheme, but more importantly it will also save you energy and money. The right window coverings will insulate your windows, resulting in greater control over the interior temperature of your home and significant savings on your power bills. Uncovered windows are responsible for up to 50 per cent of unwanted heat gain in summer and up to 40 per cent of heat loss in winter. DCB specialises in a number of products that can make a difference to your energy consumption and your bank balance. DCB’s curtains create a trapped layer of air between the fabric and the window, which results in an insulating air pocket. Studies demonstrate that curtains made from block-out fabrics can reduce heat gains by 33 per cent.

Alpha Awnings from DCB are ideal for regulating the amount of solar energy that reaches the facade of your home. They can greatly improve your home’s energy efficiency in summer, reducing solar heat gain by up to 77 per cent on windows. If you’re interested in finding out more about DCB’s range, contact the Mornington team on 5975 3655 or drop by their showroom in the Peninsula Home Centre, Shop C4 1128-1132 Nepean Highway, Mornington. The showroom is open Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm, Saturdays 9am-5pm and Sundays 10am-4pm. DCB also offers a free in-home measure and quote service. Property Home Garden

As is commonly known these days, growing your food at home brings many rewards. Vegetables, herbs, berries and orchard fruits all contribute to a healthy and clean diet that can get expensive when purchased through organic suppliers. Clearly for most it is not possible to be totally self sufficient with your fresh food, but there are methods to increase the intensity in the way that we produce food at home. Understanding your property and designing your food growing systems in such a way as to maximise variety and productivity is important. Building a raised bed or two in the backyard will provide you with small amounts of seasonal vegetables and herbs which will satisfy many people. There are ways though to look at your landscape that can significantly increase the amount of food that you can produce at home.

Vertical structures such as walls, fences, or screens can serve multiple functions by providing shade or wind protection for sensitive plants (or animals), while supporting climbing or trellised plants. All fences on your property can be used cleverly. For example, east facing fences can be home to trellised cane berries, climbing fruits such as kiwi or passion fruit, or a good site for your backyard chooks or other animals. North and west facing fences or walls are fantastic for hardy espaliers such as citrus, apples, pears or hardy climbers. South facing fences will cast more shade in the cooler months and are often good sites for elements in your garden that don’t want a lot of sun. Layered planting is another great technique for increasing your production. For example, instead of planting a stand alone fruit tree surrounded by mulch or grass with access all around it, familiarise yourself with the concept of “guilds”. A guild is simply a collection of plants in a finite space that can benefit each other while providing increased yields. So with a single fruit tree you could underplant with a few deciduous or evergreen small fruiting shrubs such as currants or gooseberries

and a useful groundcover such as nasturtiums or cranberries. You will still need to consider the plants requirements for light, soil type and water. And to take the “guild” concept further you can look at linking guilds and creating areas of “food forests”. When it comes to designing your property for planting, food and other, spend adequate time mapping out how much sun various areas receive on a seasonal basis, where the predominant winds come from and which areas may be naturally dry or wet. This will significantly help in your planning and reduce the number of mistakes that are made in the process. Don’t rush. Observe. Planning for increased production on your block is an exciting and inspiring experience. Lateral thinking and creativity goes a long way in structuring a sustainable and productive garden.
