When work is completed on the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron clubrooms and marina by summer this year, things will have come a long way from the tin shed, slip way and tiny jetty that was the BYS in 1952. ITN Architects, who are behind the Deck in Frankston and the modern luxury of the Brighton Savoy, were engaged to create a functional and stylish space for members that maximised the water views and complemented the coastal surrounds. The club rooms will consist of a racing lounge, seniors lounge and function rooms, while a spacious outdoor deck with bar access will wrap the front of the building. The new marina will have doubled in capacity and have the facility to get boats in and out of the water for servicing, something members previously had to go to Queenscliff or Sandringham for. Maben constructions are on track to have the clubrooms completed in October for the start of the sailing season, and the marina complete in December in time for the return of the Petersville Regatta, December 27-30. This family-friendly event was a mainstay of the sailing calendar during the 80s and the BYS are very excited to be bringing it back this year.

Celebrate indigenous art for NAIDOC Week Indigenous contemporary art takes over Frankston Arts Centre throughout June and July. Running now until June 27 is In the Saddle - On the Wall, a collaboration between five aboriginal owned galleries in the Kimberly and ABC Open (real stories from around Australia). Digital stories are alongside the stunning artworks providing a powerful and personal account of life on the cattle farms for the artists and their elders. Former Toorak College student, Lorraine Kabbindi White from Western Arnhem Land has her second solo exhibition Kolkiwarra opening on July 2. Lorraine’s work is in the Mimih style of her forebears and inspired by her grandfather a leader among his people whose works are featured at the National Gallery of Victoria. NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) week is observed from July 5-12 this year and Baluk Arts in Mornington has curated a number of events to commemorate the occasion. Frankston Indigenous artist Kunda Eamo will have ceramic works on display alongside selected works on paper by Baluk

Gallery artists. Bayside Bush Sculptures will be in the glass cube by day, with a projection show by night. Bayside Bush Sculptures is a selection of animals inspired by the bayside and peninsula made from grasses, wool and string in a workshop facilitated by Gunditjmara artist Bronwyn Razem. Agribusiness summit comes to town The Mornington Peninsula is set to host the 2015 Victorian Agribusiness Council Summit, bringing high level speakers to our region next month to discuss innovation in production. The event will also feature a ‘Peninsula on Your Plate – Linking Locals with Local Food’ dinner, to be held on Thursday July 30, the night before the summit. This will include a wonderful menu of locally sourced

Now in its 11th year, it has developed a reputation as a regional conference not to be missed. The event consistently attracts over 150 people, including farmers, decision makers, policy advisers, banks and financial institutions, as well as local, state and federal government. MEET OUR NEW SHIRE CHIEF LOOKING TO DELIVER BETTER COUNCIL SERVICES FOR THE COMMUNITY Mornington Peninsula Shire’s new chief executive Carl Cowie is an internationally experienced director, who has used his strong finance background to lead significant business turnarounds. In his current role, Carl is conducting an in-depth organisational review of the shire in order to stamp out inefficiencies and deliver better council services for the community. Carl has been in office for six months now, but says the time has gone fast. He has spent the past half year getting to know the councillors and shire staff and meeting with a range of community groups to learn what changes can be made to ‘deliver maximum value for less cost’. He says his aims are to positively promote the shire, improve productivity and build a more successful, sustainable and transparent organisation. And with 1000 odd staff members, this is quite a challenge. (He admits he has to

be ‘a bit bulletproof’ in his role, as people can often be resistant to change.) Scottish-born Carl, who was appointed chief executive on December 1, comes equipped with a lengthy career in finance. He studied accounting and economics at university and later completed an MBA at Monash University. Carl has worked for international oil and construction companies, hospitals, solar companies and Australian cleaning and catering group Spotless. After a stint as Caulfied Hospital’s general manager from 2000, Carl was headhunted and set off to Qatar to work as chief operating officer at Al Ahli Hospital in Doha. He describes this as a ‘massive project’, but says it was a fantastic experience living and working in the Middle East. From 2007 to 2011, Carl worked for the National Patient Transport Group, first as chief financial officer and then chief executive.

He says under his direction the company’s profits tripled, and that he enjoys tackling roles with ‘turnaround challenges’. Carl, who lives in Wheelers Hill, near Mulgrave, with wife Terri and their three boys, says when he heard about the Mornington Peninsula Shire role, he felt it would be a refreshing challenge for him. He is currently gaining knowledge about how the shire functions, performs and responds to customer needs, however is quick to assert that the organisation is not in financial strife. “We get the majority of our income from rates and we want to get that managed so that the community is getting the best value from the shire.” He says sound financial control is vital for any business and describes the shire as a large business with a high level of responsibility to the community. “I will continue to work hard with our staff every day to support council to deliver as many services as cost effectively as possible.”

Local lad Riley Spadaro is following in the footsteps of some of Australia’s most famous actors, including Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Lisa McCune.

Riley, who graduated from Elisabeth Murdoch College in Frankston last year, is now studying at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, which has schooled some of Australia’s most successful acting talents. He is studying a Bachelor of Performing Arts, majoring in performance making. Last year, Riley flew to Brisbane to audition for a spot in the

exclusive course, which he says he was attracted to because it was the only one in Australia to offer an integrated approach to writing, acting and directing. “I was quite shocked when I got into it,” he says. “It is quite a prestigious school. “The first thing I did was ring my drama teacher (Angela Phillips).

“She’s been my inspiration to keep going. “I called her before I called my mum even, and we both cried on the phone.” The course, headed by Dr Frances Barbe who has trained in butoh (a form of Japanese dance) and the Suzuki method of acting for over 20 years, comprises both academic and performance-based classes. “It opens you up to different ways of thinking about performance,” Riley says. Riley has performed in numerous stage shows and been heavily involved with musical theatre since he joined a local drama group at age ten. In March this year, he returned to Melbourne to perform a monologue from Peter Shaffer’s ‘Lettice and Lovage’. It was his VCE Theatre Studies solo piece, for which he received perfect marks and, as a result, received the Premier’s Award for the subject. The performance was part of the VCE Season of Excellence, which showcased the state’s best performing arts students. In 2011, Riley was the recipient of the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria’s Bruce Award for Junior Male in a Supporting Role, for his performance as Mrs Meers in Elisabeth Murdoch College’s ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’. He has also previously received a judge’s award and commendation from the MTGV, as well as a Lyrebird Youth Award nomination. In June 2014, Riley directed Elisabeth Murdoch College’s production of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ at the Briars. He hopes to one day perform at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago or London’s National Theatre. “To get my masters in directing at the Yale School of Drama is the dream.” BY KRISTY MARTIN www.mpmag.com.au

Mornington Peninsula man Sean Willmore’s life is full of contrasts. One day he will be speaking with Prince William and Prince Charles at Kensington Palace and the next, he’s on the frontline in Africa, helping park rangers protect endangered species from poaching. He has brought world leaders to tears at a UN summit, receives support from Hillary Clinton and Dame Jane Goodall and yet he lives in an old Melbourne tram with no mod cons and an outdoor bathtub. Sean is the founder of the Thin Green Line Foundation, the world’s only charity that helps protect wildlife by supporting park rangers. It doesn’t matter who you are, it is the message that brings people together, Sean says. In 2004, Merricks man Sean was working locally as a park ranger and attended an international rangers conference, where he met global colleagues with bullet holes and machete wounds scarring their bodies. Stirred to action, Sean set out to make a documentary about the dangers faced by international park rangers. Taking almost 12 months to travel through 23 countries, he uncovered many inspiring stories along the way. The Thin Green Line documentary JUNE-JULY 2015 (44)

Sean has received numerous awards for his work (ABC’s Australian Story dubbed him ‘The Game Changer’), support from royalty and celebrities and the foundation now provides much needed training, equipment and funding to park rangers across the globe.

Sean says that in the last decade, 1000 park rangers have been killed in the line of duty, mainly by commercial poachers and armed militia groups. “I’ve walked the ground with them, had a gun held to my head, been charged by elephants, had malaria and dengue fever, but at the end of the day I’m lucky enough to have a passport that brings me back to Australia. “They don’t have that option.” Despite his achievements and connections to people of wealth and power, Sean remains incredibly down-to-earth. He still calls the peninsula home and holds fundraising events locally, with the assistance of his ‘unofficial office’, the Merricks General Wine Store. “It doesn’t matter if I’m speaking with celebrities or dignitaries or that mum who www.mpmag.com.au

In 2013, they were given permission to use the grounds at Emu Plains Reserve in Balnarring and now teach people aged from six to mid-70s. “Archery is actually safer than all ball sports because there are so many rules and regulations,” Dawn says. “It is an all ages sport and is great for family bonding because anyone can do it. “So we get a lot of dads and sons coming along, or mothers who watch their kids and then want to try it for themselves.” Angel Archers offers coaching for beginners and experienced archers in recurve, longbow and compound style bows. MUM OF THE YEAR Many people joke about nominating their mum for ‘Mother of the Year’, but one very special Mornington woman can actually lay claim to the title. Dreena Lawrence-Gray was officially named Victorian Mother of the Year for 2015 by the charity group Barnardos after her foster daughter Lana nominated her in the statewide competition. Theirs is a heartwarming story, in which Dreena took in troubled teenager Lana five years ago and has been raising her as her own daughter ever since. After winning the Victorian arm of the competition in April, Dreena was flown to Sydney as a finalist in the Australian Mother of the Year. Although she didn’t win (the title went to Queenslander Leanne Robson), she met Prime Minister Tony Abbott at the ceremony at Kirribilli House, appeared on Seven’s Sunrise and was given a makeover

by Woman’s Day magazine. “It’s been a wonderful few weeks,” says Dreena, who now gets recognised by strangers in the street. “It’s given me a bit of a glimpse into the celebrity world,” she chuckles. Dreena, who manages school crossing supervisors, already had her own challenging teenage daughter, Rijana, when she decided to take in Lana as well. Born to heroin-addicted parents, Lana’s father died when she was was a toddler and her mother abandoned her to a life of abuse. At age 17, Lana herself was battling a drug problem and had just dropped out of school; she was staying on people’s couches when she befriended Rijana. One night Rijana confided in her mother that Lana had nowhere to go. Dreena, who had never considered being

a foster parent, did what she says anyone in her situation would. “When it comes to young people, you’ve got to provide this safe haven for them. “I wanted to help Lana, to guide her and give her love and support.” Lana, who is now 23 and goes by the surname Gray, is clean of drugs, has a steady job in customer service and rents her own apartment in the city. She nominated Dreena (who she introduces

Rosie Batty to speak in Mt Eliza

It has been 16 months since Tyabb boy Luke Batty was killed by his father while at cricket training. Since then, his mother Rosie Batty has stunned Australians with her candid and articulate manner and her tireless efforts to bring the issue of domestic violence to the fore—efforts which earned her the title of 2015 Australian of the Year. Journalist Jane Hone caught up with Rosie, who will be speaking at the Circle of Life event on June 19. How did you become involved with Miss Velvet and the Circle of Life? When Luke was killed, I was contacted by a friend and told that Beckie would like to donate half of the funds raised to the Luke Batty Foundation. Circle of Life sounds like a great event. It was a great event last year—a really great event. It was quite raw for me at that time. It was quite close to Luke’s death and it was one of the first times I got out in a social sense. It was a really uplifting and inspiring night, especially with all that female energy. I’m looking forward to having a really good evening. I just appreciate the effort people go to—it keeps me inspired and wanting to keep going. What did it mean for you to win Australian of the Year? Well, it’s an amazing opportunity. It’s conflicting: on the one hand you’re having amazing experiences, but at the same time, without Luke being killed, I wouldn’t be in the position I am now. I really embrace these opportunities but not without sadness. Has becoming Australian of the Year created more opportunities to promote your message and raise awareness? Absolutely. It’s been a very overwhelming schedule with a lot of requests for me to speak at or attend functions. I’m incredibly busy trying to make the most of everything that I can. It’s given me an opportunity at all levels—political, community… and I’m able to speak now and feel like I’m really pushing that message constantly. It’s a huge platform. What’s the main message you’re trying to promote in the world? That family violence is a gender issue. The statistics are that two women a week are being murdered at the hands of a partner or previous partner, and that the time of highest risk is when they choose to leave. I want everyone to know that there are two women a week murdered, and that one in three women are affected by family violence, no matter where they live, no matter where they come from, and no matter who they are. So around any community barbecue, or conference, or get-together, you can be sure that there’ll

Tell us about your vision for ‘healthy relationship programs’ in schools… I think it’s really important to look at long-term prevention—starting as young as kinder, all the way through. Because we have to change attitudes and change behaviours. We need to be looking at our future generations to ensure that as they grow up, we can expect that family violence is recognised as it should be, and that when they mature, they’ve got some other views of the world rather than the ones that are ingrained. Do you think it’s more important to target the behavior of men than educating women on how to leave? Absolutely! Women know how to leave. We need to educate men and women that violence is a choice that comes from a man’s desire for power and control. It’s men’s responsibility to understand the part that they play, to look at their sexist, derogatory comments, and understand that they are role models for the younger generation. What’s on the horizon for you this year? I’m working really hard, speaking at many events, hoping to raise awareness at fundraising events and with frontline services. I’ll be doing whatever I can to raise the profile of frontline services so people understand the resources and funding that are needed. I travel a lot and speak at a lot of different types of venues and that’s a large part of my year. I’m also part of an expert panel advising COAG on family violence—that’s something that the Prime Minister has put forward to me. I’m meeting with a lot of politicians and influencing change where I can. I’m maximising all opportunities. You must have a lot of energy! Well, it’s overwhelming. The power of authentic learning “When am I ever going to use this in real life?” It’s a question that most of us will have (plaintively) asked our teachers on at least one occasion during our academic careers… and it’s not a bad one either. As a teacher of Year 9 Humanities, I was lucky enough to be an active participant in Woodleigh’s ‘City Bound’ project. Two weeks working and learning in the city, commuting, based at City Cite, our office block campus. This is a fully immersive experience. Two weeks where students work toward a parent presentation evening where their learning is on show, their efforts starkly visible, and their ability to work as a team, wholly critical. At no point during these two weeks was I asked that question. On the night, our students’ presentations were most impressive. The power of ‘authentic learning’ was plain to see – visible in the confidence it had given the presenters, in their ability to respond to questioning and challenges, and their grasp

of the subject matter they had been dealing with in the previous weeks. Projects such as ‘City Bound’ demonstrate, in the words of Professor Jan Herrington and her team from Murdoch University in Perth, that “learning is best achieved in circumstances resembling the real-life application of knowledge”. Dr Herrington describes a ‘model of authentic learning’ that includes nine elements, such as providing authentic contexts that reflect the way knowledge will be used in real life as well as authentic tasks and activities. The City Bound project addresses all nine of Dr Herrington’s elements of authentic learning. Indeed the staff of the City Cite facility, which Woodleigh uses as a base for the program, remarked that no other school put as much thought and effort into the project or maximised its opportunity as much as Woodleigh. City Bound is a world away from the education many of us experienced. One of the most frequent comments I heard from the parents at the showcase

evening was that they wished that they had been given similar opportunities themselves at school. They remarked too, on how much their sons and daughters had enjoyed the project, as well as the challenges it had offered. Here we have our own evidence of the power of authentic learning. Authentic learning, of course, aligns very

Join the PHH Grampians Challenge 2016 Last year, 14 amazing women stepped out of their comfort zones and undertook a special challenge – to raise money for Peninsula Home Hospice (PHH) by each walking 50km along the Great Ocean Walk. Together these women, ranging from 16 to 66 years of age, raised a staggering $25,000 to support palliative care in the home and forged some fabulous friendships over the three days. Aptly named the ‘Girls’ Walk and Talk’ challenge, they talked, they laughed, they walked, they learnt a lot about each other and, most importantly, themselves. With this challenge being such a success, PHH is gearing up for its next challenge, a 35km hike through Victoria’s iconic Grampians. Under the watchful eye of Raw Travel guides, the challenge will this time be open to the boys as well. Challengers commit to raising $2000 each

to support PHH, a local charity that provides palliative care in the home to those within our community who are living with a lifethreatening illness, as well as step up to the physical challenge of the hike itself. The three day walk will take place from Friday March 18 to Sunday March 20, 2016 and registrations are now open. It will be a chance to de-stress, exercise and enjoy our natural wilderness while knowing the money raised has made a real and true difference to those choosing to receiving palliative care in the home. Life can be scary for asylum seeker, refugee and migrant women living in Australia. Imagine not being able to speak English. Not being able to complete basic tasks like grocery shopping or take public transport. Not having the skills to be able to work. Luz Restrepo knows this battle firsthand. After arriving in Australia from Colombia as a political asylum seeker five years ago, Luz suddenly felt she had no identity.

“It’s the feeling that I used to be someone, but here I am nobody.” Luz says she felt frightened, isolated and disempowered. “Here I can’t provide for my family in the supermarket, I was scared to answer the mobile, to take public transport. “My daughter had to be my translator. “I thought, who can empower me and change my situation?” Luz started English classes in Mornington, where she met other women experiencing similar hardships.

PHOTO BY LIBBY JANE This is where the idea for SisterWorks was born. To begin, the ‘sisters’ came together socially in their homes to cook traditional meals and teach others to do the same. Realising that together, they felt stronger and more powerful, and recognising a need for money to empower oneself, the women began selling crafts at markets around Melbourne, including Mornington’s Main Street Market. SisterWorks Inc. was born in May 2013 when a committee of volunteers joined Luz with legal, fundraising, marketing and administrative skills to give support and structure to her cause. “Our mission is to enable the most vulnerable asylum seeker, refugee and migrant women to work towards financial independence by developing the skills they need to settle happily into Australian society,” says Luz, who lives

in Dromana. Today, SisterWorks encompasses 68 women from countries like Chile, Iran, Liberia and Tibet. Almost half are refugees. They do weekly markets and pop up shops selling a variety of handcrafted goods and they also do educational visits to schools. “We have become like a family,” Luz says proudly. Work helps these women gain confidence, gives them life skills, breaks their dependence on welfare and improves health and family relations. Luz says the goal is to see these women develop the business skills and acumen to be financially self-sufficient and no longer require the help of SisterWorks. www.sisterworks.org.au

Facebook loves its business pages because it charges owners to post status updates - if they want to reach more than a handful of followers, that is. And although the Facebook for Business seminar at Frankston Arts Centre on May 8 was essentially a promotion for Facebook business pages, there was coffee and breakfast and tips on how to get good organic reach to sweeten the deal. In a nutshell, the advice was: research shows that people use Facebook to stay informed, but they also want an emotional connection. Emotion + information (tailored to your audience) = good social media. Otherwise, pay for your social media ads.

ANZAC CENTENARY

Representatives of the Mt Eliza Girl Guides recently took part in the 2015 Anzac Day march. Leaders Bluebell, Tonkonie and Possum (pictured) said all who attended loved being part of the 100 year celebrations and felt very privileged to be involved in the march.

Two teams of Mount Martha surf lifesavers recently competed in the youth section of ‘The Aussies’ championships on the Gold Coast, with one bringing home a bronze medal. The 10 youths (two teams of five) had already competed in nine Victorian competitions and won gold and silver at the state finals in Ocean Grove. The Aussies is the largest event of its kind in the world, with 7000 surf lifesavers representing 311 Surf Life Saving Clubs competing over nine action-packed days in Coolangatta.

The event showcases Masters, Opens and, new to 2015, Youth Championships. Jimi Hocking is one of the great Aussie bluesmen. Singer, songwriter, guitarist and mandolin player, he has been described as the ‘electric lovechild of BB King, Jimi Hendrix and T-Bone Walker’. Jimi is one of four top-notch musicians to feature in the second Mornington Peninsula Blues Sessions, an exclusive event to be held on Saturday July 11. The high-class concert also features Ian Collard, Alison Penny and Shannon Bourne. The four will perform acoustic numbers in duos and trios for the first half of the show, followed by a fantastic electric ensemble. Held at the Peninsula Community Theatre in Mornington, this nightclub-style event will also showcase premier peninsula wine, beer and produce. Having recently moved to Mt Martha, Jimi Hocking is a peninsula local who tours nationally and internationally for blues gigs and festivals. Jimi grew up in Melbourne and toured with The Angels in the 1980s before becoming lead guitarist with the iconic rock band The Screaming Jets, who he continues to tour with today.

Perfect weather and a worthy cause were the ingredients for success at the fifth annual Walk For Western Port, which generated about $16,000 for the Dolphin Research Institute. In the late ’90s he decided to go solo and take on the blues scene. Along with his playful banter, superb storytelling and wailing guitar, he now also has a strong following for his mandolin skills. “People see me as a guitar player, but some time ago I got the mandolin bug. “It is tuned completely differently to the guitar and more resembles the violin family. “At the start I did it for the novelty, I’d get up and play one of my three chord songs on mandolin. “Now it’s my second instrument.” Jimi says the blues sessions, the first of which was held in January and a howling success, is not like a pub gig in that the crowd is there for the music. “Often, particularly with free pub gigs, the music is secondary so people perhaps don’t value it as much. “But with this event, music lovers can go along and enjoy, knowing that they are not going to be interrupted.” For event details and tickets, head to www.morningtonpeninsulabluessessions.com MORE ARTS & EVENTS ON PAGES 82-87

The event, held on Sunday May 3, attracted 250 participants, including 24 school groups. Volunteers from the Hastings State Emergency Service (SES) also took part in the 2.3km walk along the Hastings foreshore. Face painting, a magician and sausage sizzle were also part of the fun, family friendly event. Organisers say sunny weather helped attract more people than last year (and plenty of pets!) and that the fundraising had almost doubled. The spirit of

giving Red Cross member, Genie Fiebig loves life and at 85 years of age still plays the organ at her church every Sunday, but she’s also seen her fair share of challenges. Genie’s connections with Red Cross go back to her childhood in war-torn Poland. After her relatives were separated by World War Two, Red Cross helped to reunite them. Years later, after Genie had moved to Australia, Red Cross blood donations helped her through a harrowing hip surgery operation. These days Genie receives daily phone calls from Red Cross volunteers who wish her a good morning and check she’s okay. Genie recently decided to leave a gift to Red Cross in her will. “I feel that I’ve been very, very fortunate in life and it’s one way of giving back,” she says.

Genie explains that she still needs to keep some money aside in case she moves into aged care, but by leaving a gift to Red Cross she can help people in Australia and further afield to live happier, healthier lives and get support when they need it.

With the government proudly declaring that this year’s budget is all about energising small businesses and helping them grow, one would think that they got a pretty good deal. The question is, will any of their measures inspire real change?

• T he cost of setting up a business, often legal and accounting fees, can now be written-off in the first year of business, effective July 1, 2015. Currently, the deduction must be spread over a five year period and considering that many small businesses may not be profitable during this time, the deduction would only further increase their losses, of which no tax is paid on.

SOME OF THE CHANGES INCLUDE:

The government is hoping these measures allow for small businesses to take the leap to bigger and better things, helping drive our local economy. While no one measure will instantly propel a small business into higher profit, the combination of good business planning, as well as utilising benefits announced in the budget, could help small businesses take a step in the right direction.

• I ncome tax rates for small business companies will be reduced from 30% to 28.5%, effective July 1, 2015. Therefore, for every $10,000 of profit made, $150 of tax will be saved. On face value that looks great, and if you are a profitable small business this can provide a great short-term benefit. Once you draw the profits out for personal use, however, you will still pay the same amount of tax as you have in the past. • A ssets purchased under $20,000 can now be written off instantly. This represents an increase of $19,000 from the previous limit and can be applied to unlimited purchases (motor vehicles, computers, machinery, etc). The increase brings a deduction that is normally claimed over a number of years into the first year of ownership. The write-off does not fund the asset purchase, it merely allows for it to be deducted from your income.

When an opportunity presents itself, it is always important to ensure that it fits within your current business plan. What these measures do is give small businesses the ability to decide if now is the right time to take the next step in their business evolution. I can’t stress enough the importance of thinking before acting. A knee-jerk reaction based on budget night announcements (which still needs to pass parliament) could be detrimental for a small business. Never underestimate the importance of sound, educated advice, while considering its impact on your business goals. As the 2015 financial year draws to a close, now is great time for you to reassess your current position and future cash flow expectations.

By now you will have lodged three out of four BAS statements for the year, so it’s a great time to ask your accountant to do some year end planning. Recent budget changes need to be considered when planning asset purchases. It’s also time to reconcile your superannuation payments to be sure that your final payment is able to be processed quickly after your last June payroll. To claim a tax deduction, payments must be received by the super fund prior to June 30. It’s a good idea to prepare payment summaries for your staff in the current version of your accounting software prior to upgrading for the new financial year. Laser and IPL hair removal is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in Australia.

Over the last few decades, the technology behind hair removal has evolved in leaps and bounds. Susan Verheyen from Advanced Skin and Laser has been performing these treatments for over 15 years and says: “The hair does not come back if the procedure is performed correctly with the correct equipment and by experienced operators with a strong knowledge of skin and hair.” For hair removal, lasers and IPL machines work by delivering photothermal energy to the hair follicle. Put simply, it is necessary to ‘heat’ the follicle, where the hair is nourished from, to destroy the growth pattern. In selective photothermolysis, wavelengths of light are chosen to target a chromophore (target) without causing damage to surrounding structures. There are a number of targets, including melanin, water and collagen. In the hair removal process, the target is melanin (brown colour), to keep it simple. Because melanin is found in the surface of the skin, cooling off is required to avoid damage to the skin and this is where experienced operators, with efficient medical equipment stand out. Both laser and IPL machines are very effective for hair removal and therefore there is not one ‘best’ machine. Although these types of hair removal are very safe, they are paramedical procedures with the potential for serious adverse outcomes if not performed correctly. Unfortunately, over the past few years poorer quality equipment with inconsistent energy output and wavelengths, which can vary each output, are making some clinical results unpredictable. IPL PHOTO-REJUVENATION: At least once a year, an IPL treatment for the removal of sun damage, general redness and uneven skin colour is a must.

Create a NEW YOU, or simply remove the surface damage for a new refreshed skin. Sue says rosacea, a type of skin inflammation, is one of their most commonly treated conditions, along with acne. Although rosacea can not be ‘cured’, life is much easier once IPL treatments, together with LED (Light Emitted Diode), are used. Again, with rosacea, experience is the key. PEELS – NEW POSSIBILITIES: A vast amount of new information is coming forward in ingredient technology, combination peels and applicable methods. Clients know that peels are a very efficient way to remove cell debris. A Burst of Colour at Manyung this Winter

JULY EXHIBITION ‘Evocative Landscapes’

The June/July exhibitions at Manyung Gallery in Mt Eliza will be a celebration of vibrancy and Australian landscapes from a collection of award-winning artists. Colour Your Works and Brighten Your Day (June 5 – 28) JANINE DADDO Daddo has an “enthusiasm for life expressed in joyous, colourful paintings.” She uses a technique of layering colours to give added texture to her works. For Daddo, painting is “like creating a conversation, a memory, a yearning.” HELEN DI TOMASSO Di Tomasso explores ways of playing with line and motif in her work, as well as colour and juxtaposing soft and bold tones. She is interested in other cultures and the convergence of memory and identity. Evocative Landscapes (July 3 – 31) MELANIE HAVA Hava combines her Austrian and Aboriginal heritage to express her love of Austrian and Australian landscapes. She started in the 1990s by painting on digderidoos and canvas at local markets in her native Mt. Isa.

PETER COAD Coad displays a “distinctive and masterful fusion of colour and composition”, reflecting the vibrant hues of the natural world. He is inspired by ancient cultures and their art forms. GREG MALLYON The dominant theme of Mallyon’s work is the Australian landscape, and he uses aerial and satellite photographs taken while on field trips as inspiration. His work has been exhibited in Australia, Europe, Asia and the United States. GUY DETOT French sculptor Detot has called Australia home since 1982. Detot has a background in professional dancing and is inspired by “movement, rhythm, lyricism and the flow of nature”. His exhibition is the first to be shown in Manyung’s sculpture room. CAROLE FOSTER Foster uses a modern abstract impressionist style to convey a combination of works of a quiet nature and high energy, vibrant pieces. THE BEAUTY OF LIFE For local artist Angela Russo, inspiration lies in the beauty and wonder of life – the people, the places, the animals. “My desire in painting is to share this beauty, to evoke happy memories, to hear the music, to be uplifted and feel the joy,” she says. “My artwork is about capturing the essence of the subject matter and this is done in my favourite medium of pastel and charcoal. I love the vibrancy of the colours, the directness of the application and the diversity of effects.” You can see Angela’s work on display in the foyer of Mornington Library from June 13 to July 10. Her collection is categorised into three groups: African animals, musicians and landscapes. The animal artworks were inspired by the artist’s visits to an open range zoo, with each captivating painting telling its own story. The musician collection, in charcoal and conté, was inspired by Angela’s love of music and the many musical performances she has attended. “When I look at these, I can hear the music and feel the joy it gives.” Anglea continues: “The Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne and Venice feature in the places I have captured in my

The pair are passionate about the welfare of their animals and say having having healthy and happy cows is a priority. The cattle are pasture raised, live in a herd environment and are grass fed. “We transport the cattle ourselves so they are handled gently by people that they trust. “We MSA grade each carcass as a further guarantee of quality.” All beef is long hung for 14-18 days prior to being cut up by a butcher and vacuum packed for freshness. Premium quality is of the highest priority, says Ali. “We take one steak from each animal (rump or round steak) and pan fry it to medium. “We class it as acceptable if it can be cut with a serrated edged butter knife.” Ali says the beef has outstanding flavour and melts in your mouth. “Our cattle are slow growing and take 2-3 years to be ready to be processed. “This growth rate, combined with the natural feed, produces

CARBON NEUTRAL? Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is aiming to be the fourth council in Victoria with carbon neutral accreditation. In accordance with this, the council is currently seeking community input on its Carbon Neutral Options report, which identifies a range of options for achieving carbon neutrality to ensure our community reduces the risks associated with climate change, lowers energy costs, and minimises impacts of shire activities. The report presents several options the shire could implement to achieve zero net emissions or become accredited as carbon neutral under the federal government’s National Carbon Offset Standard accreditation. Key benefits for the shire in becoming accredited as carbon neutral include reducing the shire’s greenhouse gas emissions and resources used, as well as saving money and reducing impact on climate change. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said carbon neutrality is an ambitious and forward-thinking approach to long-term environmental stewardship. “Only three councils in Victoria are currently accredited as Carbon Neutral,” she said, adding that the council had a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and ongoing leadership across climate change and environmental awareness. Community input to the options report closes on Friday June 19. Council will consider community submissions relating to the report at a meeting on June 24. Most gardeners will tell you that their compost is the life source of their garden. For those with an edible garden composting is important for you to maintain the health and fertility of your crops. While the primary function of composting is to recycle nutrients in order to return them to our soil to feed our plants, it also helps to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill, thus helping to reduce the impact our households have on the wider environment. Many families these days will have a compost bin out the back of the yard in which food scraps, leaves and lawn clippings are housed. Unfortunately, often these bins do little to help break down your waste in the short term and serve only as a storage vessel and beacon to small flies and mice. You will find that over time the waste does break down, but it can take many, many months and rots rather than composts. While there are many ways to compost, there are a three main composting methods that homeowners can use to recycle their food and garden waste; compost heaps (including bays and bins), worm farms and liquid manures.

Bulk garden waste, spent crops and lawn clippings can go into the traditional compost heap, compost bay or compost bin. It is important though that the compost receives sufficient oxygen to feed the bacterial driving force at the heart of your compost. You need to also ensure that the pile has adequate moisture, is layered well and has a good ratio of dry to wet matter (carbon to nitrogen). It is worth doing some research in order to understand the composting process better to produce optimum results. The easiest way to deal with kitchen food waste is to use a worm farm. These can be readily purchased from nurseries and hardware stores, though it is easy to make your own using recycled materials such as polystyrene boxes, bathtubs or old rubbish bins. When used well, worm farms don’t tend to smell as much as the common compost bin. You also get the added benefit of a constant supply of worm juice and worm castings, some of the best natural fertilisers you can get (depending on what you feed them, of course). Weeds can also be composted, but not with your garden waste compost system. We can use weeds separately to form liquid manures, thus retaining the goodness they have drawn from the soil. Old bins

work well for this purpose. If you grow comfrey, nettle, nasturtiums or abundant herbs, these will all benefit your liquid manure by increasing the range of nutrients and minerals in your solution. Composting needn’t be confined to a single plastic bin in the back corner of your garden. Using a combination of systems can provide you with an array of ready to use fertilisers for your food crops by retaining many of the nutrients that are coming out of your garden and kitchen.
