Australian Tourism Winners Five Mornington Peninsula tourism businesses have been honoured as leaders in their field at the 2014 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards. The event, held in Adelaide on April 10, recognises not only the efforts of individual operators but also the collaborative efforts of the Australian tourism industry. The Mornington Peninsula’s winners were The Enchanted Adventure Garden, Frankston Visitor Information Centre, Stillwater at Crittenden, Green Olive at Red Hill and the Wine Food Farmgate regional marketing campaign. Mornington Peninsula Mayor Bev Colomb congratulated these businesses on their success. “Congratulations to the local operators who were recognised at the Australian Tourism Awards for their excellence in tourism,” she said. “The Mornington Peninsula is a vibrant and unique tourism destination, and the recognition at these prestigious national awards is a great result for not only the successful operators, but for the region and tourism sector as a whole.” The Frankston Visitor Information Centre was awarded a gold medal and inducted into the Hall of Fame, while the Enchanted Adventure Garden at Arthurs Seat won gold for adventure tourism. Silver medals went to Green Olive for excellence
in food tourism, to Stillwater at Crittenden in the category of tourism restaurant and catering services and to the Wine Food Farmgate campaign for destination marketing. “The tourism industry is critical to growing jobs and future proofing our local economy and it fantastic to see our businesses recognised as national leaders in their field and to see the region represented in such a positive and prolific way,” said Tracey Cooper, executive chair of Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism Board. Owners and staff of The Enchanted Adventure Garden are thrilled with the win saying “Although there’s no financial gain, it’s the sweetest prize of all to be recognised at the Australian Tourism Awards as a Gold Medal winner.” Although the business has been in operation for over 17 years, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Owners Michael and Sally Savage began the venture in 1997 and after an initial period of success, the business started to plateau. In 2010, they took a financial risk and decided to expand the attraction by adding several new adventure activities to the existing mazes and gardens. They added Australia’s largest Tube Slide attraction with 5 dry slides and the popular Tree Surfing aerial ropes course. In 2015, the park expanded further with the opening of the Big Zip and Treetop Canopy Walk. The Enchanted Adventure Garden now employs and provides training for more than 100 local staff in a range of areas including tourism, hospitality, horticulture and outdoor adventure.

PERLS OF WISDOM By Kristy Martin
‘I’ve never felt more like myself than I do when I am able to do my two favourite things simultaneously: sing and be silly.’ Whether it’s strutting down the street in a zebra onesie, having her face pushed into a cake for a music video or making mucus sexy during a Marvin Gaye cover, you can never quite guess what Jude Perl is going to do next. And that is definitely part of the appeal of this quirky songstress. With music that blends elements of soul, funk, pop, disco and comedy, Perl has got many bases covered. The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter, who has been playing piano since she was seven, lists Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson, and Jamiroquai as her influences. And whether it be singing one of their covers or something she has penned herself, there is no doubt this lady’s got talent. Perl was born in Texas and, despite coming to Australia at age three, she never quite managed to shake the accent. Her tongue-in-cheek humour plays a big part in her music, and this is evident in her collection of online videos. One sees Perl walking through Melbourne’s CBD in a zebra print onesie trying to persuade people to come to her gig, and during her music video for the single Girls & Boys, released a couple of years back, the singer’s face gets shoved into a cake, which kicks off an epic food fight. (Despite filming a dozen takes, she admits it was a lot of fun.) This year is shaping up to be a busy one for Perl. She recently performed her first solo music-comedy gig as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival,
and while she admits comedy can be a hit-or-miss affair, she finds that “even when it’s difficult, it’s still really enjoyable.” Next month, Perl will grace the stage at the Mornington Winter Jazz Festival, held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. After that, she is set to release her first full-length album (recorded in LA last year) before embarking on an overseas tour. Despite her penchant for silliness, Perl explores serious topics like gender roles and the challenges women face in the music industry. She is critical of society’s focus on looks and the sexualisation of female artists as a tool to sell records. Demonstrative of her point about breaking down gender stereotypes, Perl names the character of Yetta, the elderly grandmother in 90s TV show The Nanny, as her biggest role model. “On my new album I have a song about Yetta. “She’s such a cool, sassy, sexy 80-something-year-old and that’s what I aspire to be. “Everything she says is hilarious and amazing. “I hope to be that cool when I’m her age.” We’re sure you will be, Jude. Check out Jude Perl live at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery on Saturday June 7 as part of the Mornington Winter Jazz Festival. Guests will participate in a panel discussion and Q&A with Music Victoria, the Live Music Office, Sydney, APRA/ AMCOS, local producer Ian Pav and local musician Marty Nelson Williams. Nankervis is a seasoned showman and, with his comedic stylings, the event promises to be a hoot. “I’ll be moderating the panel, making sure everyone is involved and who knows, there might even be a little music quiz to get things rocking. See you there!” After the panel discussion, hear from young talent and recent winner of the Voice of Frankston, Fox de Roche, rising artist Jude Perl and the Pete Kaighan Trio to kick off the Winter Jazz Festival June 5-8. They are fast, unique and built from scratch right here on the Mornington Peninsula. Introducing the $3 million ORC pilot boat, constructed by Hart Marine and making waves in the industry for its cutting edge technology and self-righting capabilities. Multi-award winning Hart Marine has been operating in Mornington for 30 years, established by director and owner Mal
Hart, who comes from a maritime family boasting six generations of sea faring and boat building. The company started out building high performance racing yachts like ‘Skandia’ for the Sydney to Hobart and other world-class events. Then along came the Global Financial Crisis and suddenly people did not have the discretionary spending capabilities to be investing in the pleasure boating market. Soon after, Australia’s mining sector took

off, which led to a growth in ports around the country, and this allowed Hart to make the transition into building commercial vessels. “We were fortunate enough to partner up with Port Phillip Sea Pilots, which needed some pilot boats in Melbourne,” Mal Hart says. The history of sea pilotage goes back many hundreds of years, when seamen with local knowledge offered their services to ship’s captains to navigate their vessels through the often-dangerous waters at the entrance to ports. Today, throughout the world, nearly every port has a pilotage service, with the pilots licensed by the government of that country and usually employed by the local marine authority. During its research, Hart Marine discovered a pilot boat designed by French naval architects Pantocarene France that was the vessel of choice in Europe at the time and the peninsula company was eventually awarded the contract with Port Phillip Sea Pilots. As Port Phillip Sea Pilots had lost a boat and two crew members in rough seas, safety was its paramount concern. The ORC pilot boat has a unique wave piercing bow that increases performance, comfort and safety, even in the harshest conditions.
Hart’s first two pilot boats were launched in 2010 and they have since built boats for companies like Rio Tinto and Chevron. Mal says it is hard to believe that the Western Australian mining industry is helping to support small business in Mornington. “We built a lot of boats for ports around Australia and we’ve just been awarded a contract for a New Zealand port, which is a coup for us. “We’re fortunate to have a unique design and that there is a real need for these boats here in Australia.” The ORC pilot boat is worth up to $3 million and takes about 10 months, or 20,000 hours, to build. They range in size from 14m-18m and Hart builds three or four each year. From its humble beginnings with just two employees, Hart Marine now employs 52 workers and every aspect of their boat construction is done in-house at the factory on Yuilles Road, except for the electrical work. While Mal says there is room for company growth, there is no intention of shifting away from the peninsula. “We’re a good sized business (as is) and we will stay in Mornington.” www.hartmarine.com.au

Used in Australia, meaning to take a sick day when you’re not really sick, e.g., “Mate, I couldn't be bothered going to work today. I might chuck a sickie.” Also known as a ‘mental-health day’. This ingrained Aussie tradition is most memorably encapsulated in then-Prime Minister Bob Hawke's exited outburst as Australia II crossed the line to win the1983 America’s Cup, “Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum!” For many of us, chucking a sickie is as Australian as Vegemite, meat pies and kangaroos. And anyway, whose idea was it to put that public holiday on a Thursday? Being so perilously close to the weekend it makes taking the Friday off look like a five dollar note sitting on the pavement: there for the taking! Well that’s one view. Your employer, no doubt, will see it very differently. After all, they have a business to run and your wages to pay. And there is no provision for ‘chucking a sickie’ in a profit and loss account.
Why Marshalls+Dent Lawyers?
If you’re ever so bold as to contemplate chucking a sickie consider the recent case of Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union v Anglo Coal (Dawson Services) Pty Ltd (No 2) [2015] FCA 265. Our protagonist, a true-blue union member, let’s call him Chuck Asikie, asks his boss for a few days off over the ANZAC Day weekend. But, no banana, and leave is denied. Our Chuck is not to be deterred and decides to chuck a sickie. On his return to work, Chuck dutifully brings in a medical certificate from his doctor, let’s call him Dr Frank Einstein, to cover his two days ‘sick leave’. Chuck’s boss, let’s call him Dee Tective, knows that Chuck’s request for annual leave for that period was denied. So Dee puts two-and-two together, and promptly sacks our Chuck.
To quote the judge, “A situation had been created where the employer had strong reason to believe that he simply wanted time off work over the Anzac Day holiday in 2014, and that he was prepared to acquire a medical certificate to overcome the [company's] refusal to grant him that time off work as annual leave". In other words, our Chuck had breached his employment agreement and had fewer legs to stand on than a carpet snake.
Needless to say Chuck was not a happy Vegemite and, represented by his union the CFMEU, took his case to the Federal Court. After men in funny wigs had done arguing with each other the judge, found Chuck’s employer was justified in dismissing him.
If you would like further information on Employment Law, please contact Nicolina Lademann at Marshalls+Dent Lawyers on 9670 5000 or visit www.mdlaw.com.au.
So what’s the lesson for all employees? A doctor’s certificate won’t make you immune! If the facts support your employer's suspicions that you took sick leave without being sick, you can be sacked. In this case, the denial of Chuck’s request for annual leave was evidence enough to see him escorted out the door. Case closed!

BLOOD MOON
This fabulous shot is a compilation of images from the total lunar eclipse - also known as a ‘blood moon’ - on Saturday April 4, as taken by peninsula resident Trent McDougall from his backyard in Dromana. When the earth casts its shadow on a full moon and eclipses it, the moon can appear to have a red glow. This blood moon was the third in a series of four eclipses, known as a ‘tetrad’. The first eclipse occurred in April last year and the second occurred in September. The final eclipse of the series is expected to take place in September this year but will not be visible in Australia. Our next total lunar eclipse will be January 31, 2018.

VISION ‘Begin with the end in mind’ written by Andrew Van De Beek illumin8 partners This is John Wulff from Wulff International’s simple yet effective approach to building a personal or work vision. Think about how different your life would be, compared to how it is now if you approached every day with this idea. What would make you really proud after all is said and done? Vision comes down to understanding what you want the end result to be, and how you want to get there. It is more than just setting a vision and working towards it; effective vision statements should be closely aligned with your personal values and the outworking of that should be in your everyday. Business coach Shirley Reeder from Brave Consulting puts it this way: “You can’t have a business/job vision without putting it into the context of your overall life vision.” She is absolutely spot on! Your vision needs to give a holistic view of who you are; physical, emotional, spiritual and social. If we live our private life one way, and then we walk into work and act totally different, there is so much separation between both identities that integrity can be compromised. In a recent meeting, I spent time discussing how truly understanding the vision for our businesses can be difficult to articulate. I’m a firm believer that deep down everyone has a good grasp on their vision, but may just struggle to put it down into a few easy-to-understand sentences. So here are some questions that I find of great benefit as I continue to develop vision for both my personal and professional future. 1. A t the end of the day, what do I want to be known for? 2. W hat does an ideal day look like for me? 3. W hat would my ideal client look like and why would they choose my service over anyone else’s? 4. W hat consistent values do I want to stand true throughout my business and personal life? These may be questions you are asking yourself already, or perhaps you have a few of your own. The important part is that you are asking these questions and allowing yourself to be challenged to greater things.

As a young girl growing up in Mt Martha, Harna Burton always dreamed of becoming a zoo keeper. At age 31, she is now employed in her dream job at Melbourne Zoo, where she gets to spend her days with playful and cheeky animals. She even witnessed Kimya the gorilla giving birth earlier this year. Harna took time out of her busy schedule to tell Mornington Peninsula Magazine about her amazing job.
Describe a typical day at work. I’ve been a zoo keeper at Melbourne Zoo for almost eight years and my current role is precinct manager of the primate department. A typical day involves an early start with breakfast at work while listening to the gibbons sing, then morning feeds and training sessions (important for health checks like injection training, checking teeth and monthly weighing) for the primates, then lots of cleaning to have the exhibits ready for our visitors to arrive. The rest of my day is spent doing administration tasks for primate welfare, breeding plans, new exhibit planning, and juggling the daily management needs of over 50 primates and 15 primate keepers. It’s busy! What studies did you complete? When I finished school I did a Certificate IV in Animal Technology and a Certificate III in Conservation Land Management at TAFE. This got me a job at the RSPCA, in the animal shelter and vet clinic. In my spare time, I volunteered at wildlife parks and my Mum, Dad and I had a wildlife shelter at home through WHOMP (Wildlife Help on the Mornington Peninsula) where we rescued and nursed injured native wildlife. Is being a zoo keeper as fun as people would imagine it to be? Yes! We get to work with endangered species every day, and work for an organisation that is committed to fighting extinction. Not many people get to spend their day with elephants, gorillas, tigers and seals. There is a lot of cleaning though! What is the best thing about the job?
Definitely the relationships you build with animals. Just like pets at home, we spend a lot of time with these animals caring for them, so you look forward to being with them at work. What is your favourite animal, and can you tell us about some of their different personalities? I have lots of favourites, but my number one would have to be the gorillas, as they are such magnificent and intriguing creatures. They all have different personalities and also moods! Just like humans, they have days where they are tired and grumpy or playful and very relaxed. Our orangutans are definitely the smartest animals and our young baboon boys would be the naughtiest. Describe your best memory from your time at the zoo. My best memory was being a ‘monkey mum’ to Estela the spider monkey after her mother rejected her at birth. A few keepers stayed around the clock for six months handraising her and teaching her how to become a monkey. But witnessing the gorilla birth just recently would definitely be my career highlight! Tell us about that. Seeing Kimya give birth was amazing. Another keeper and I were in the gorilla house just in case Kimya had birthing difficulties, however it all went perfectly. It was such a privilege to watch this little endangered treasure, named Kanzi, enter the world. And Kimya is the best mum. She is protective and nurturing, and her baby is healthy and strong. We couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome. What is one thing about Melbourne Zoo people might not know? Zoos Victoria is committed to fighting extinction in the wild. Our goal is to be the world’s leading zoo-based conservation organisation. Do you still come to visit the Mornington Peninsula? All the time. My family still lives there and the beautiful beaches are my favourite place to get time out. www.zoo.org.au for more information on Melbourne Zoo.

WE LOVE GRAN’S COOKING When we think of our grandmothers, it is often their love, wisdom and cooking we remember best. Sharing food and recipes passed down from ‘gran’ is a rite of passage for many Aussie families. For Mornington Peninsula grandmother, Melanie Georgiou, some of her fondest memories involve cooking with her own grandmother and mother. “I was taught to cook by my namesake, Grandma Melanie, and my mum Theodoula,” Greek-born Melanie says. “Some of my happiest memories are of Grandma, Mum and I cooking together – cooking is paramount to bringing family together.” Melanie is one of 60 grandmothers from across Australia whose recipes feature in a new book by New Zealand culinary personality and cook, Natalie Oldfield. Titled Love & Food at Gran’s Table, the book celebrates the culinary wisdom of grandmothers from different cultures and walks of life. Melanie’s recipes featuring in the book are Greek moussaka and Katsiki Youvetsi, (young goat with risoni in red sauce).
“I remember that even though Grandma was quite strict in the kitchen, she was always willing to share her love of cooking with recipes and advice – which was ALWAYS keep your kitchen clean and ALWAYS cook with olive oil!” Natalie also takes inspiration from her grandmother, Dulcie May, who she used to cook with as a child and the latest book follows the release of her other hugely successful titles Gran’s Kitchen and Gran’s Family Table. The book is now available at bookstores throughout Australia. We’ve got one copy to giveaway, find and like us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/MPmag) for details on how to win.

Change your water and change your life! Magnetic Water P: (03) 9786 0099 A: 2-3/19 Sir Laurence Dve, Seaford E: info@magnetic-water.net MAGNETIC WATER is unique, pure and healthy. Tap water can appear ‘clean’ but is often contaminated with harmful bacteria and undesirable chemicals like chlorine. Staying hydrated plays a crucial role in maintaining overall wellbeing, but did you know that the key to maintaining healthy cells is sustaining a balanced alkaline environment in our bodies? MAGNETIC WATER is natural alkaline water. Alkaline water acts as an antioxidant, it helps detoxify the body by assisting in the removal of acidic waste products that can aggravate conditions such as gout and arthritis. Scientific laboratory tests prove conclusively that Magnetic Water surpasses other
waters on the market today by providing a perfect ph level of 7.6 and an amazing alkalinity level of 140mg per litre. A balanced level of alkalinity in the body is a key factor to staying healthy and assisting our bodies in fighting disease. Drinking balanced alkaline water such as Magnetic Water improves hydration. Proper electrolyte balance in the body is the key to our hydration. Common electrolytes are calcium, magnesium and potassium. The mineral properties of Magnetic Water are not artificially added. Silica for example is naturally present in Magnetic Water, which contains 57mh per litre. The daily recommended adult intake is 20 to 50mh per day. Silica is essential for bone, hair and skin health. It energizes our immune system and helps promote mineral balance in our bodies.
MAGNETIC WATER contains 57 mg of Silica per litre, the highest naturally occurring silica level of any bottled water in the world.

SKINNY DUCK FLIES SOUTH… TO SORRENTO! Brainchild of Sorrento Catering Company’s Barry Iddles, the Skinny Duck is making a return this month. After the success of the inaugural event, held in St Kilda, it will be our neck of the woods - beautiful seaside Sorrento. Skinny Duck will be attended once again by English celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, who owns the Michelin 3-star restaurant The Fat Duck at Crown Towers. Barry says when he heard that 90,000 people had entered the ballot to get a seat at the $525-per-head Fat Duck, he realised how many people out there had ‘cash to splash’ and the idea for Skinny Duck was born. The event, held at St Kilda Town Hall in January, generated $130,000 for FareShare, an organisation that delivers meals to impoverished Victorians by cooking and redistributing surplus food from supermarkets and other businesses. The 14-course degustation dinner featured

some of Melbourne’s top chefs, including Jacques Reymond and Adam D’Sylva. The second Skinny Duck event will be held on Saturday May 30, to coincide with the Taste of Sorrento festival held in town that weekend. As part of its Community Events Programme, the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club is proud to be hosting the dinner, which has been called ‘Skinny Duck Flies South for Winter’. Tickets cost $150pp, which includes a stunning three-course dinner, drinks and live music. There will be a raffle and silent auction, with dinners from celebrity chefs already donated as prizes. Barry, who is now a FareShare ambassador, says he hopes to raise $30,000 for the charity as part of the Feed Melbourne Appeal, which will provide 60,000 meals for the hungry. Mother’s Day is tough without a mum to spoil. I lost my mother to cancer in 2008. I was 32 years old and had three young sons who adored her. It devastated me, to say the least. I loved my mother immensely. I still do. She was my best friend. As long as I was close to my mum, I felt safe. I smothered her in adoration on Mother’s Day, as I knew how special she was. I will never forget my first Mother’s Day without her. It was torture. It was a very long day and I just wished the minutes away. My husband and my boys were so beautiful, making sure that I felt special and giving me hugs all day long but the lump in my throat grew larger and larger as the day wore on and I only felt relief when it was over and I no longer had to feel that gaping void of not having a mum to celebrate.
MAY-JUNE 2015 (43)
By Leigh Van Der Horst It’s now six years down the track and I still struggle. It is certainly not as hard to see out the day as it was years ago, but I do still carry a heavy burden with me each year. For me, distraction is a wonderful thing to try and keep a smile on my face. I have to enjoy the day for my boys. I am their mum and they have every right to spoil me, as I did my mother. Usually the day is action packed with no time to sit still and dwell. One recent year I thought it would be great to have no plans and just ‘relax’. The overwhelming emotion that consumed me, and in turn resulted in me being ‘not much fun’ to be around only proved that it’s all still far too raw to dismiss. There is no right or wrong way to deal with days like these when you deeply miss someone you love. I have come to realise over time that I just have to accept the unreliable wave of emotions and I also have to be kinder to
myself at certain times of the year. The beautiful thing is, as time passes, we do become stronger and our hearts do heal and each year brings with it more happiness. I honour my mum each year, but not just on Mother’s Day. I do this every day. Although I can’t see her, she is with me and I am certain she is sitting back, with a huge, proud smile watching on as my boys smother me with extra love on that one special day just as I did with her. That would make her so happy. And that makes me happy. Happy Mother’s Day to each and every amazing mother, and to those who can no longer spend the day with theirs, I send my love and strength. Leigh Van Der Horst (pictured with Mum Joanne) is a mother of four boys who lives on the Mornington Peninsula. She recently released her first self-published book called ‘Without My Mum’, available at bookstores nationwide or at www. vividpublishing.com.au/withoutmymum

When Rene Barics was a child at school, she would always draw people with bubbles around them. Not realising she was special, Rene thought that was how everybody saw other people. As it turns out, Rene was witnessing people’s aura – the energy field that surrounds the body. Rene (pronounced Reen) is now one of Australia’s leading psychic mediums. Based in Somerville, but with offices in Sydney and Melbourne, she was voted Victorian Psychic of the Year by her peers in 2013 and recently founded Australia’s first psychic agency. Psychic Agency Australia brings together talented and professional psychics from across the country. Each is asked to perform a series of tests to prove their abilities before being accepted to the agency. It is designed to help members of the public find and access reputable psychics. However, Rene is not too quick to dismiss those who fail the tests and offers them a chance to study with her in order to become more skilled in their craft. It is her goal to see the industry regulated and standardised.
I stopped by Rene’s home to chat with her about her past and how she came to realise she was different to other people. She tells me that when she was a child (the youngest of eight sisters), she always used to sleep in the hallway, where it was light, as the dark in her bedroom would ‘move around’ and this frightened her. No matter how many times her mother would carry her back to bed, she would always find her way back to the light. In her teens, Rene’s abilities became more prevalent and she recalls predicting things that had not yet happened or telling her mother not to trust strangers when they came to the door.
After high school, Rene worked in a bookshop, where she became the manager at 25 and developed strong business skills. She has since completed her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and began studying criminology a few years back. But her transition into the psychic industry came 17 years ago, after she finally decided to embrace her abilities. (“If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,” she laughs.) Rene began to look for explanations and found herself drawn to reiki, a healing technique based on the channeling of energy. She has since become a Usui Reiki Master, a metaphysical teacher, alchemist, astro-theologian, tarot reader, numerologist, past life therapist and performs spiritual house clearings. She is a regular guest on Psychic TV and contributor to That’s Life and New Idea magazines. Rene says she helps connect people with loved ones who have passed away, which allows them peace and closure. She travels extensively throughout Australia presenting mediumship workshops, exhibiting stage performances and appearing at expos. To contact Rene, visit www.soullove.com.au

GLOBAL VILLAGE
HOUSING ‘Everyone deserves a place to call home…’
It takes a special type of person to do what Mornington man Jason Thatcher is doing. After witnessing extreme poverty while volunteering in Cambodia, including children living in squalour on rubbish dumps, he has set about changing the lives of these people, one family at a time - by building them new houses. Jason is the founder of Global Village Housing, a social enterprise (‘not a charity’) that provides robust, durable, low-cost, transportable housing for people who do not have the means to do so themselves. It is a heartwarming story, whereby people living comfortably around the world are able to gift a new home to impoverished people in rural Cambodia. So far 60 houses have been provided to poverty-stricken Cambodian families through Global Village Housing’s collaborations with charity organisations, government organisations and private donors and sponsors. The flat pack houses, designed by Jason himself, measure 3m x 3m, are fully insulated and built on stilts, which helps them withstand the elements, including floods. One house costs just $1650, which includes solar power, and can be erected in less than four hours. MAY-JUNE 2015 (43)
The houses are small, but when you are gifting them to families who have been living and working on rubbish dumps, the pride and happiness they feel is immeasurable. Added to this is their improved health and wellbeing. The houses have lockable doors and windows, as robberies are a huge problem in the slum areas, and are easily transported in case the family must pack up and leave the area. “We are now working in some of the most remote parts of Cambodia,” says Jason. “Some of our houses are being delivered by canoe.” Jason, who owned a furniture restoration company in Mornington for 23 years, now divides his time between Cambodia and Vietnam, where he runs motorbike tours (his ‘paid job’), and Australia. “Everyone deserves a place to call home and Global Village Housing is committed to doing just that, helping to provide impoverished people with a safe secure place to call their own. “With all of our homes, not only can you sponsor a home for a family, but we welcome you and encourage you to come over and meet a family in need of a home and take part in the building and installation. “This in itself is a huge, life-changing experience,” says Jason. To learn more about Global Village Housing, go to www.globalvillagehousing.com or find them on Facebook. www.mpmag.com.au

THE FUTURE OF FRANKSTON Frankston is about to get a whole lot busier, with more than 150 new residential apartments set to be built in the city centre. Frankston City Mayor Sandra Mayer says developments have been approved in Davey Street, Playne Street, Clyde Street and Beach Street, with more yet to come. This exciting period of growth comes hot on the heels of the opening of the $49.7 million Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre (PARC) in 2014 and also the decision for South East Water to build its new headquarters on Kananook Creek Boulevard, which is set to open later this year, bringing the corporation’s 700 employees, plus two creek-side hospitality businesses, to town. Cr Mayer credits vision of the council in office back in the early 2000s as the driving force behind the transformation of Frankston’s CBD. It was their ambitious project to convert the previously undeveloped Frankston foreshore into a place tourists and locals wanted to visit, to complement the city centre. “I give a lot of credit to the council of that time for their vision,” Cr Mayer says. “Previously our city centre had its back to the water. They realised we needed to embrace our bayside location.” In 2015, Frankston’s picturesque waterfront boasts multiple dining options, accessible boardwalks, an award-winning Visitor Information Centre and regional children’s playground.
The new Frankston Yacht Club Precinct will also be completed later this year, offering state-of-the-art yachting facilities, function rooms, landscaped gardens, further waterfront dining options and raised wheelchair-friendly beach walk. “Finally people are realising we are a genuine seaside city, built alongside one of Victoria’s best beaches – this has had an enormous effect on attracting further investment.” Council also secured funding for the redevelopment of the Frankston train station and partial funding for the construction of a function centre at Frankston Park. Their ‘Invest Frankston’ campaign and Priority Planning model have also had a major impact, increasing private investment. “For the first time, we will see residential apartments being built in Frankston City,” Cr Mayer said. “This is exciting news for traders, as each development brings new customers past their doors.” New developments have recently been approved in Davey Street (16 levels, 60 apartments), Playne Street (5 levels, 22 apartments), Clyde Street (5 levels, 63 apartments), Beach Street (3 levels, 14 apartments) and Nepean Highway (11,000 square metres of office space), with more in the pipeline. There are a significant number of properties owned by investors waiting for the right moment to develop,” Cr Mayer said. “The best is yet to come.”

TYABB AIRPORT IS
TAKING OFF After receiving a $1 million state government grant, the Tyabb Airport has a new concrete apron, taxiway and state-ofthe-art radio-controlled runway lighting.
The work has created local jobs, with the solar lighting made by Somerville company Avlite Systems and construction work going to local contractors. The airport, which is operated by the Peninsula Aero Club, traditionally had a grass runway that was only made bitumen 12 years ago. At the time, the club could only afford to have the paving cover an area of five metres in width, says vice president Jack Vevers. “It is now eight metres wide, which allows for faster turnaround time for emergency aircraft, such as air ambulance, fire and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. “It makes the whole airport more viable and more operationally safe.” The Peninsula Aero Club has been operating out of the airport, on Stuart Road, for the past 50 years. The club, which now has 525 members, provides flight training for all licence levels from private to commercial, and Mr Vevers says it is quite common for local kids to begin learning to fly at age 15. “We start off with children from three local schools and we teach them to fly.
( 34
“We’ve taught people who are now flying instructors, jet pilots and international airline pilots.” Trial introductory flights are available through the club, as well as scenic flights for tourists and charter services. PAC also does ‘Angel Flights’, in which they pick up people from remote areas and take them to the city for medical treatment. This is a free service conducted by the club’s members. Mr Vevers said it was great that the previous state government had seen the importance of investing in smaller, regional airports that offer important services to their communities.

Saving $200,000 with Bartercard is as sweet as it gets for local beauty spot Peaches & Cream, which has been servicing the Mornington Peninsula with one of the most diverse range of treatments at one salon.
Owner Suzanne Johnson recently relocated her beauty therapy clinic to bigger premises and a busier location, which has allowed her to add two extra treatment rooms and expand her services to encompass laser tattoo removal. The popular treatment has quickly spread with a wave of aestheticconscious clients wanting their ink reversed, and specialised cosmetic clinics have typically catered to this service. Suzanne, who is a qualified beauty therapist with over 30 years experience, believes continual education in the industry is paramount and has applied this approach to her own practice. She has a Bachelor of Health Science and is qualified in laser and IPL. She said when it comes to tattoo removal, the market has responded with smarter and more sophisticated
equipment to achieve cleaner results, now available at her new salon. “With the addition of laser we now offer a full suite of beauty services encompassing hair, skin, brows and lashes to more specialised treatments including keratin straightening, teeth whitening, IPL and injectables.” Turning 27 this year, Peaches & Cream has built a reputation on quality and its all-encompassing range of services, which adds convenience to timepressed clients. The salon is now in its third location. “Most business owners will know how expensive it is relocate, but Bartercard saved me $40,000 on dismantling the old salon and establishing our new premises in Hastings,” she said. “I used Bartercard to offset the cash cost of the architectural plans, installing the new framework and fit out, painting, flooring, new signage, advertising, electrical work and plumbing, all of which I payed for with trade dollars instead of cash,” she said. “Last year I traded more than $100,000 through the network to conserve cash flow in my business, and over 10 years my cash savings have stacked up to double this amount – letting me bring in new services and stay competitive in the market.”
To balance her spending Suzanne takes clients on Bartercard. She said the advantages of joining the cashless network are impressive. “There’s nowhere else in business where you have access to interest-free credit and the ability to offset cash flow like you can with Bartercard.”

By Jane Hone You don’t have to wind your way up a mountain to see snow this winter – the Portsea Hotel is bringing it to you! There are already countless reasons to visit the historic pub on the southernmost tip of the peninsula: to indulge in some excellent food, meet a friend at one of the four bars, treat yourself to some beautiful accommodation, warm yourself by the fireplace, or simply enjoy what is arguably the best view of any pub in the state (making the Portsea a popular wedding venue).
The Portsea gives you one more reason to visit this Queen’s Birthday long weekend, when it will again hold its annual Snow Party. This will be the 16th annual Snow Party, starting at 11am on Sunday June 7 and going into the night. Locals and holidaymakers alike anticipate this yearly event as a way to sprinkle the colder season with a little fun and magic. The Portsea’s famous beer garden lawn will be covered in REAL snow and transformed into a winter wonderland for the whole family
WIN!!! $3000 FOR CARERS UP FOR GRABS Carers are amazing people that provide support to friends or family members who, due to illness, disability, age or mental health issues, cannot cope without their support. There are thousands of carers across the Mornington Peninsula who selflessly volunteer their time to make the lives of others easier. Just Better Care Mornington is now seeking to recognise and reward these unsung ‘superheroes’ of our society. Just Better Care is a support provider that offers a wide range of services to assist people who require in-home, social and lifestyle support. They also provide carers with respite so they can take a much-needed break and have some personal time. This month, Just Better Care will be giving away $3000 worth of support services to local carers. Nominate an unpaid carer you know, along with details of their situation, and they will go in the running to win a voucher for three hours of respite. There are 25 vouchers up for grabs, each valued at $120. “People can choose to use their respite for one hour over three separate days or they can take it as a three hour block, which will allow them the time to go see a movie, go to a spa or whatever they want to do,” says Just Better Care Mornington’s director Callum McMillan. The competition is open to carers who live in the Mornington Peninsula area and will run throughout May. Anyone who wants to nominate a carer can call 5972 1860, visit Just Better Care at Level 1/Suite 2, 346 Main Street, Mornington, or find their stall at the Wednesday market. MAY-JUNE 2015 (43)

POLICE POINT WORK GAINS MOMENTUM The Woodworkers of the Southern Peninsula have been restoring two outbuildings at Portsea’s Police Point Shire Park as part of council’s heritage conservation works. Police Point Shire Park was created in 2004, when the federal government transferred 17.5 hectares of land at the entrance to Point Nepean to Mornington Peninsula Shire. The park was the site of the original boundary and entry to the Quarantine Station, and was later used by the Department of Defence. There are six cottages, four of which will be used as respite accommodation for carers and their families, and two for a range of arts and culture purposes. Originally built between 1916 and 1921, the respite cottages and outbuildings were used as accommodation for police attendants at the Quarantine Station, and later used by the Army between 1950 and 1998, then Parks Victoria ranger staff prior to hand over to the shire. Since council’s adoption of the Police Point Recreation and Conservation Action Plan in 2012, the Shire and community groups have been working to build on the vision of the park as a place for the whole community, where people can learn from the past, enjoy the present and share into the future. Woodworkers of the Southern Peninsula are currently restoring a shed and former laundry as part of the respite
accommodation precinct to be used for stoage and laundry. Mornington Peninsula Shire Nepean Ward councillor Tim Rodgers praised the Woodworkers of the Southern Peninsula, saying their dedication and workmanship is top class. “The woodworkers have brought their incredible skill to the project - and it’s been wonderful for the shire to work in partnership with them and to have our community get involved in this great project. “Restoration work to the shed and former laundry is really coming along, and we look forward to seeing these buildings restored and once again made useful for our community,” he said. Fellow Nepean Ward councillor Hugh Fraser added: “In addition to the shed restoration works at the park, two historic cottages are currently being trialled for use as respite accommodation for carers of people with a disability and their families. “This follows the signing of an agreement late last year between Sorrento Rotary and Mornington Peninsula Shire to manage the respite accommodation service. “The trial, together with Karingal disability support agency, is likely to lead to more support agencies being able to use the cottages as respite accommodation in the future.”

SURIYA LOTUS SPA AND GALLERY A touch of luxury and wellbeing in Mornington Suriya Lotus Spa on Main Street is the Mornington Peninsula’s premier luxury Thai spa where the therapies originate from the ancient methods of Thai healing. The Spa offers a variety of body and pampering beauty treatments from the famous traditional Thai massage to rejuvenating body scrubs and organic facial therapy, all of which will leave you feeling and looking younger with an increased sense of wellbeing and mental calm. The practitioners at the spa have many years’ experience in the ancient art of Thai massage and will use these time proven methods to gently rejuvenate your aching body and relieve even the most chronic pain. Head masseuse Sasipha Budthep says, “Most of the time we tend to put up with our aching bodies, but this is counterproductive. “The longer we leave the problem, the deeper it gets and it then becomes a long
process to heal.” In Thai therapy, the masseuse is trained to determine the underlying causes of the musculoskeletal pain and treat them with specialised techniques that have been developed for thousands of years. On the other hand, stress can build up caused by many factors and later on lead to a serious illness, so a regular relaxation massage is an important ingredient of our busy lives. The spa also contains the Victorian gallery of internationally acclaimed and multi-award winning photographic artist Visuddhacara Philip Ayres. Combining the luxury Thai Spa with its classic Thai décor, music and scents with his spectacular award-winning landscapes offers the visitor a unique experience, while at the same time receiving one of the many famous healing treatments. A local expert You may not think that Mornington is Australia’s leading destination for research into cosmetic surgery - but you’d be wrong! Plastic surgeon, Tim Brown, has worked on the peninsula for a decade and recently changed the emphasis of his practice so that now he treats only cosmetic surgery issues. Although he has over 20 years experience in plastic surgery, there is now such a demand for his skills in the particular area of cosmetic work that he has taken the decision to super specialise. “Whilst I would like to continue treating the whole range of problems I have dealt with on the peninsula for the last 10 years, I can’t do everything!” Over the last 20 years, he has published over 60 papers in peer reviewed journals concerning various reconstructive and cosmetic topics. The quality of his work has been recognised with the award of ‘Best Journal Article’ by both the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, and more recently the Australasian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Since 2012 his attention has been exclusively focused on breast implant surgery. The last three papers he published have tracked the progress of over 750 women who have had breast implants under his care, outlining the results, complications and satisfaction with outcomes. In particular, he has focused on fitting the size of an implant to the size of the patient to ensure great outcomes. “It’s a matter of horses for courses, and recognising what suits who. Did you know for example, that patients with a low body mass index (BMI) are more likely to want a very small implant compared to those of a “normal” BMI? Also, almost one in five women wish they had picked a bigger implant by three months after their procedure.” These issues are important and can help patients decide and make choices that are likely to produce happy outcomes. Whilst anybody thinking about breast implant surgery wants to make sure that they have made good choices, the amount of information produced on the internet can make this task daunting. To assist, Mr Brown has written a book ‘Precision Breast Augmentation – the science of breast implant surgery’. Currently in production, it will be soon available on Kindle from the Amazon Australia store, and also free in hard copy to all patients who attend for a breast augmentation consultation. The book explains the published facts about breast augmentation surgery and also Mr Brown’s personal research. It answers all the common questions that patients ask during a consultation.
Presently, Mr Brown is the only surgeon in Australia who has ever published personal data concerning his results following breast augmentation surgery. He believes that this is vitally important that patients realise this before deciding who undertakes their procedure “How can any surgeon honestly look you in the eye and tell you that their technique will give you a good outcome if they don’t even know the answer themselves?” Mr Brown does not personally charge for revision surgery on his patients should they have a problem, although hospital costs need to be covered by either insurance or individually. “We provide a lifelong guarantee on my surgical work in the event of implant failure or capsular hardening, and are always delighted to see our previous patients.” There are a number of lower cost options available for Australians who wished to have breast implants. Mr Brown suggests that you should ask some very specific questions about their results and care, not just look at a series of before and after photographs. “Results should be published in a peer reviewed journal, so that they are available for the whole world to see and criticise. It is a time consuming learning process, but if you are serious about the work, why wouldn’t you?” Mr Brown also believes that surgeons should provide long term care and responsibility for their patients, “If a patient has an issue, I want to know about it, even if it is 10 years later. Whilst it is important for my research, it also provides reassurance for patients that someone locally is there for them.” His ethos with cosmetic surgery patients is the ‘three A’s’ – available, able and affable. “Berwick is where my practice is based, and the hospital is across the road. All of my staff have worked with me for ten years. We’re on call for patients 24/7 and I live in Frankston South, not Sydney or Thailand. If you have a problem we are there for you. You will get seen by us. Oh, and incidentally, I think we are pretty affable too!” If you wish to have an appointment to see Mr Brown for any cosmetic surgery issue, please call 03 8768 5000 for an appointment. We also provide some Saturday appointments. ‘Precision Breast Augmentation – the science behind breast augmentation surgery’ by Tim Brown will be available on Amazon Australia Kindle Store from May 31, 2015.

Another summer has passed, and yes it is time again to look at your skin and refresh after the sun has taken its toll.
SCOUTS HAVE FOUR TIMES THE FUN!
Never before has Baden Powell Park Scout Group celebrated so many achievements in one evening, when Rebecca Gynes, Aaron Kebbell, Hugh Wetherill and Connor Sunkel-Lozell were all presented with their Australian Scout Medallions after masses of hard work and fun!
The Australian Scout Medallion is the highest award in the Scout Section and is considered the pinnacle of scouting. To earn the Australian Scout Medallion requires an enormous commitment of time and energy by the scout. Rebecca, Aaron, Connor and Hugh have collectively participated in 81 camps, 35 hikes and 214 nights under canvas and hiked a total of 800 kilometres. Each had to complete an adult Level 2 First Aid course, attend two leadership courses, organise two patrol activities and two hikes, including menus, transport plans, food purchase, budgets and risk assessments. They have each organised at least six patrol
( 52
nights or outings. They have taught other scouts knots, lashings, navigation, camp safety and first aid and completed at least 16 hours of community service. During their time in scouts, they have had the opportunity to go on camps focused on abseiling, top rope climbing, caving, water skiing, ski touring, ski camping, bushcraft and survival, high ropes, canoeing and rafting. Of course, none of this would have been achieved without the assistance and support of the wonderful leaders from the Baden Powell Scout Group. As the Baden Powell Park group leader Mike Beadle said: “These guys have worked really hard, had an enormous amount of fun and fantastic experiences and grown and developed their skills as young people which keeps them in good stead into their futures. We as a group are really proud of their achievements!” Pictured from Left: Dee Kebbell, leader, Rebecca Gynes, Aaron Kebbell, Hugh Wetherill, Connor Sunkel-Lozell and Sandra Sunkel-Lozell, leader.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) facial rejuvenation for brown spots, sun damage and red veins is the place to start. Inevitable though it is, ageing is something few of us welcome with open arms. But our attitudes to dealing with it have changed, especially in recent years. Turn back the years, restore your more youthful look, and remove the years of sun damage. Where? At Advanced Skin and Laser! “With over 32 years’ experience in skin problems, rosacea, clogging and acne and also 16 years’ laser and IPL, you will be in the most experienced professional hands on the peninsula,” says Sue Verheyen. It is also time now to start your IPL hair removal. “Fade your tan, have your test for your hair removal,” says Sue. “Receive the results you deserve for your money.” Clients at Advanced Skin and Laser do not have to re-treat each year. It is serious hair removal, with serious equipment, with a tried and tested history of well over 7000 clients, for over 16 years, as mentioned. Take your hair removal seriously and see Sue or Adelle. While overseas recently, Sue looked into a study by a leading manufacturer of muscle relaxant injectables and facial fillers, which
shows there is a distinct move towards a subtler, less dramatic (and traumatic) approach to looking younger. The ideal is now to look an average of eight years younger, and Sue says: “The majority of our clients are asking for a fresh, rested and healthy look. “Our doctor and nurse injectors have never advised or treated our clients resulting in a stark or frozen look, and now it seems from this study that, in general, clients are seeing the ‘light’. “Today we have more control over how we age.” “Muscle relaxant injectables and fillers, when used with a practised hand and artistic eye, can slow down the obvious effects. IPL can improve damaged skin, and removal visible damage. “ “Together with the latest ingredients in skincare, we can all contribute to whether we age well – or not.” With all this in mind, remember our chest, neck and hands require assistance also. Moisturise every day - every second day with a AHA moisturiser to lift dead cells and lactic acid body moisturiser every other day to assist in the retention of moisture, and of course, have IPL to remove the obvious signs of neglect over the years. Maybe try an injectable in these areas to plump and smooth the skin, alongside IPL. With the right advice and treatments, you can turn back the clock for a fresher and more youthful look. Make an appointment with Advanced Skin and Laser, the skin professionals, today on 9787 7475.

GET YOUR HAPPY BACK! Spinal Health Week: May 25-31
The team at Adam’s Back in Rosebud would like to invite you to ‘Get your happy back’ during Spinal Health Week, which runs from May 25-31. Every day, more and more Australians experience disabling low back pain, neck pain and headaches, limiting their ability to work and engage in an active, healthy life. Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between body structure (primarily the spine and pelvis) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how this relationship can restore and maintain health. Adam’s Back is a dedicated and highly skilled team of chiropractors who are proudly celebrating 20 years of service to the Mornington Peninsula. A recent addition to the team is Dr Jason Monahan, (pictured) who has completed a Bachelor of Health Science (Chiropractic) and a Master of Clinical
Chiropractic. Dr Jason’s decision to become a chiropractor stemmed from his upbringing in preventative, proactive
healthcare while heavily involved in his chosen sport of ice hockey. “The wellbeing of your spine and nervous system is vital not only to how you feel, but more importantly, how healthy you are,” Dr Jason says. The principal chiropractor at Adam’s Back, Dr Adam Mackey, says chiropractic care may be of assistance for many conditions, including back and neck pain, arm and leg pain, sports injuries, headaches and migraine. “Maintaining your spine with chiropractic adjustments and specific exercises is an important part of a wellness lifestyle,” he says. “Spinal Awareness Week acts as a timely reminder to have your spinal health assessed, so book appointment with us today.” Adam’s Back A: 881 Point Nepean Road Rosebud P: 5986 5700 W: www.adamsback.com

The girls at Hair on Barkly have gone a little mad this month! As the colder weather rolls in and we turn to thoughts of families and fires, onesies and slippers, these girls decided to have a dress-up day at the salon, just for fun! Crowns and feathers always go well together, so why not? (Shhhh, there was a little bubbles involved as well!) However, while we are all about having a bit of fun in the salon, we are also very dedicated to our day job, which is what we do best. EMMA (blue) has a fabulous new range of exotic colours from DE LORENZO, with turquoise, bright purple and HOT PINK. Wow - they look fantastic! Check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for pics. NONIE (black) has gone all CURL CRAZY! KEUNE has released the most fantastic NEW KERATIN enriched perm – yes, it’s a perm! Believe it or not, it’s true. BIG, LUSCIOUS CURLS ARE BACK. Nonie is the girl for you; she’s got the goods when it comes to this groovy look.
CARLY (purple) is an expert in all things colour! Her foiling expertise is amazing! If you want to see yourself with something special, come see Carly. Her cutting ain’t bad either - she loves to cut short, funky styles… For guys too! TAYLOR (pink) is our apprentice. She is building her clientele. Taylor has become efficient in her basic cutting skills, while her foiling and colouring is always improving, and is getting quick now aswell. Taylor also is our KERATIN STRAIGHTENING EXPERT. Get the ‘apprentice rate’ with Taylor. And don’t fret, Vicki is certainly still with us! She just happened to be on holidays during this photo shoot (lucky thing!). With Mother’s Day just around the corner, now is the time for everyone to get thinking about a gift for mum or grandma. So why not give them something they can use and appreciate? Gift certificates are available in store or order one over the phone and we will post it out to them, or you.
Alternatively, visit the website or email us, leave your details and a short message and we will be back to you in a flash. It’s that easy. Hair on Barkly A: 3/74 Barkly Street, Mornington P: 59752397 E: info@haironbarkly.com.au W: www.haironbarkly.com.au www.mpmag.com.au

Have you ever wanted to dramatically change your colour but were worried that you would damage your hair too much? Well, worry no more, as Zúmay has just the thing that will change the way you think about hair colour - forever! The Zúmay team is excited to introduce the revolutionary Olaplex to their clients. It is the brainchild of two chemists, Craig Hawker and Eric Pressly, who claim that it is the solution to never having hair breakage ever again! Zúmay owner, Lorna Evans, said: “As a hairdresser for over 30 years, this was a massive claim, so over the past few months, I have been researching and watching the media around the world to see if this really could be true.
“Let me just say - it is the REAL DEAL! “You only need to Google ‘celebrities’ and ‘Olaplex’ and you will see it was the answer to how Kim Kardashian went from dark to white blonde. “Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow and Dakota Johnson, to name just a few, have also sworn by this new treatment. “The suppliers of this liquid gold are the major sponsors of the Lorna Evans Education business, so we were ensured first delivery as it hit Australia.” So, what does this mean for you? It means when you visit Zúmay for a colour and add Olaplex to your service, you can push the boundaries of the hair so colour correction has never been so easy. Going blonder has never felt so good, and perhaps you can now add in those highlights you have always wanted, but your hair was too damaged?
Extra for Long Hair & Toning
HOT TIP: If you are after a dramatic change and your hair is already damaged, call into Zúmay and buy the Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 and treat at home for one week before your salon service. This will strengthen the bonds in your hair and give you the most mind-blowing results. LONG TERM EFFECTS: Everyone wants to know if Olaplex builds up in your hair, making it difficult to colour or lighten after several uses. The quick answer is that the hair just keeps getting better. The Olaplex testers, top celebrity colourists who have everything to lose, have used Olaplex on thousands of clients multiple times for over a year with not one single report of anything negative. What will happen if I use Olaplex a few times on compromised hair then stop? Will the bonds that were created eventually break and cause my hair to then break? These questions are asked often and the answer is no. Even if you completely stop using Olaplex, the protection that Olaplex offers is permanent. Does Olaplex contain silicones or parabens? Olaplex is free of silicones, oils, aldehydes, parabens, gluten and cruelty towards animals. The Zúmay team is ecstatic about this new salon service that will leave clients’ hair softer, shinier, stronger and easier to manage. Just call the salon on 5977 0711 to book in and give your hair the treatment it so rightly deserves. Leo
Sagittarius
The positive planet Jupiter continues to generously influence your Zodiac Sign resulting in good times for those connected with Leo. This month sees you reap the rewards when it comes to your public life. This is your month to shine at work and in any arena that has you in the limelight.
Taurus
After a month of fun, it is now time to get down to more serious business. You need to focus on your own goals, catch up on chores and focus on work. Your responsibilities are calling. Your connections with other cultures and people overseas may still influence you this month.
You are now in the mood to spoil yourself. You can indulge in a few luxuries, personal favourites, when it comes to possessions and activities. Your self-esteem and finances are good this month as is your self-confidence. Just make sure that you take loved ones needs into consideration as well.
It is possible that you are at a crossroads in your life right now. Perhaps you plan to take a trip, start a form of study or increase your commitment to a religious or spiritual organisation. On the other hand, you may instigate changes in your working life.
Virgo
Capricorn
Gemini
Libra
Aquarius
Cancer
Every now and then a person’s sense of equilibrium is tested by those around them. May sees you in such a position. Two planets – Mars and Mercury – are aligned in your opposing sign Taurus, heralding a time when relationships sorely test your limits. Calm consideration is called for.
Scorpio
Pisces
Geminis are known as good communicators. Now it is time to excel in getting your message across. You are social, fun to be with and able to mingle in groups. You can chatter away, but what do you really want to communicate? If you have something that you want to share then spread the word. Friendships are positive during May. Your alliances with other people can shed light on your own personal hopes, dreams and wishes. Therefore you are likely to seek the company of others, perhaps even joining a new group or association. Attention to detail at the start of the month augurs well for fun later.
It is a time for a shift in the way that you view yourself and the world. Any area of your life that is stagnant needs to be faced and changes implemented. Librans are the world’s best procrastinators but May demands that you delve deep. It is time to let go and move on.
Your creative projects are at the forefront during May. It is time to enjoy the fruits of your labours. This can mean different things to different people. Creativity can range from painting watercolours to enjoying catching up on accounts. You get to choose where to enjoy yourself.
May sees your focus shift to family and your home. It is time to ensure that your private life supports you. Your family structure needs to be nurturing. Otherwise you may seek changes. Your home needs to be safe and sound. If not then you are likely to fix, renovate or even consider a move.
Worthwhile communication is the key this month. You need to keep your thoughts focused on positive matters, your words kindly and assertive and your connections with others uplifting. You may make some decisions regarding your working environment. This is not a change of direction, but rather a change of job or office.

Water, war and wonder, the Penny drops
‘He told me stories about the war when I was a kid and I’d pick up a pen and draw stick figures’, says Penny. ‘I was always shooting down the (German Fighter Pilot) Red Baron. All my pictures turned black when the bush fires hit the Mallee in the 60’s. My grandmother said “one day that boy is going to be an artist”’ - looks like she was right! Mr Penny loves water, though he used to avoid painting it because everyone seemed to produce seascapes. Then things changed. ‘I came down to the peninsula and the sea was so beautiful I couldn’t help myself.’ He’s been painting it, (along with landscapes and street scenes) ever since. Penny explains: ‘I interpret life visually. When I go on holidays I take a camera, pens, pencils anything to record a response to what I am seeing’, and the result is both emotive and deeply reflective. Penny’s work
(mainly in watercolour and acrylic) takes you deep into the landscape while washing over you with colour and light. Penny has been a technical and architectural illustrator and has even illustrated poker machine symbols. Graduating from Hamilton Technical School and Ballarat College of Advanced Education (Art) sees him in the role of tutor at both Victoria and Swinburne Universities. He also takes artists (groups of twelve) on travel tours to wonderful places – next trip is Cambodia. Does he have any advice for fledgling artists? ‘Stay grounded. Set goals and think commercially’. This advice has set him in good stead. His paintings hang in galleries in Brisbane, Singapore, California and of course here on the peninsula at the fabulous Manyung Gallery in Mt Eliza where you’ll be able to see his work – and lots of it – in November and December. ear Beneficiary follows the adventures of Cynthia Hartworth, a feisty 60-year-old woman who, despite strong convictions that she has everything in her life under her control, finds out the modern world isn’t always as it seems. Widowed in her late fifties after a lifetime of marriage to the dutiful, but dull, Colin, she decides that life is for living and she takes on a number of activities with enthusiasm and energy – often to the distress and discomfort of those around her. She embarks on a passionate affair with a 38-year-old African man she met at Advanced Driving Classes, and is subsequently heartbroken to hear he has to return to his home in Nigeria to tend to his sick parents.

Cynthia’s grandson, Tom, helps her get on the internet in her bid to try and contact her former lover, Darius, via email. When she receives a ‘spam’ message asking for her bank details to help a friend who needs medical help, she immediately assumes Darius has been in contact to ask for her support.
As a result of her naivety and stoic resistance to suggestions she needs to be careful about communicating via email, she ends up travelling to Nigeria where she meets some very interesting people, and experiences a life she could never have imagined from the comfy sofa of her home in leafy suburbia. Humorous, witty and fast-moving, Janet Kelly’s Dear Beneficiary has a unique voice which questions the fragile foundations of middleclass conformity.
‘Cynthia is a wonderful character and makes for a unique story...’

FINE ART AT FLINDERS
THE MAGIC OF WOODTURNING The Peninsula Woodturners Guild will host its annual ‘Woodturning Magic’ competition and exhibition this month. Woodturning is a form of woodworking that is used to create wooden objects on a lathe. Differing from other forms of woodworking, woodturning uses wood that is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood. See stunningly crafted pieces such as candle holders, vases, bowls lamps and clocks at the exhibition, to be held at the Peninsula Community Theatre in Mornington from May 19 to 24. The event is open from 10am to 4pm. Entry cost is $5, with light refreshments available and ample parking at the venue, located on Wilsons road. The Peninsula Woodturners Guild meets weekly at McClelland Gallery in Langwarrin. It was formed in 1984 and now has 200 members aged between 16 and 90. For more details, visit www.pwguild.org.au
The Flinders Art Show is held on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend in June each year and this year marks its 48th year. Profits from the show, which runs throughout the long weekend, are distributed to local charities and community groups on the Mornington Peninsula. Over the past six years, more than $160,000 has been distributed to local groups. The art show commences with an opening night on Friday June 5, which is always well supported by the community and visitors who are in town for the long weekend. Radio presenter Neil Mitchell returns this year as MC for the evening. Opening night, which runs from 7pm-10pm, is a great opportunity for people to view the art, meet the artists and purchase some quality pieces. Entry cost is $30, which includes canapés and door prizes. Local wine and beer will also be available. The art show will be open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and features a number of categories and awards, the funding for which is kindly donated by sponsors. A provocative new exhibition at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery called Windows to the Sacred explores the existence of a universe beyond our world. Challenging mainstream religion and pursuing alternative forms of spiritual practice, many notable artists are represented in this provocative exhibition including the English occultist Aleister Crowley, once named ‘The Wickedest Man Alive’. Curator, Robert Buratti, one of Australia’s leading experts in the area of esoteric art, says ‘Esoteric art is essentially focused on man’s search for hidden knowledge of himself and his place in the universe.’ The exhibition also features key works from Rosaleen Norton, the infamous ‘witch of Kings Cross’ and Austin Osman Spare, a British artist devoted to the supernatural, as well as major Australian artists such as Danie Mellor and James Gleeson, whose works are re-examined in the context of their esoteric influences. Windows to the Sacred is showing from May 15 until July 12. Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery is located at Dunns Road in Mornington. www.mprg.mornpen.vic.gov.au

The Where and When of Jo Scicluna By Jane Hone
If you are human, then Jo Scicluna’s installation at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (opening this month) is for you. Her exhibitions have a political motivation, (“with a lower case ‘p’”, she adds): that art is for everyone - not just the art world. All of Scicluna’s exhibitions begin with the words ‘Where’ or ‘When’. ‘Where We Begin’ comprises several of her exhibitions and work from the past three years. Her titles point at her fascination with time and place, or rather, “timelessness and placelessness.” Scicluna lives in Fitzroy, but met her partner on the Mornington Peninsula many years ago. He has since built a house on the peninsula. Being a first generation migrant (Scicluna’s parents came from Malta), Scicluna understands the idea of displacement, of being in-between places, very well. Scicluna says that she “hasn’t found home yet”, and so her work documents this search for home. It is possibly her experience as an outsider that provides her talent as an artist.
The last Emu Plains Market of the season was held last month. The popular craft and food market in Balnarring will be back later this year.

The photographs from ‘Where We Begin’ were shot exclusively on the Mornington Peninsula. Scicluna says that the peninsula is beautiful “because it’s on the edge”, referring to her preoccupation with borders (or the lack of them). Considering Scicluna’s interest in the fluid nature of time and place, it makes sense that seascapes would feature heavily. There are around 15 ‘objects’ in the installation, and not all are photographs. The photographs were shot on her iPhone, a Hasselblad and an old 1960s toy camera, which is a nod to her wish to dismantle hierarchy in the art world and be open and inclusive, rather than elitist. Scicluna is currently undertaking a PhD at Monash University, which involves her questioning whether her position as the daughter of migrants has impacted on her approach to art and the world. So much more than a single event, the Winter Wine Weekend Festival is a showcase of everything our spectacular wine region represents. Think magical settings, incredible views, fine wine, food and pleasant music - all highlighting the Mornington Peninsula’s riches of winter. Winter and wine is a fantastic combination – and has been since the very first Winter Wine Weekend in 1981! It is after vintage, when the camaraderie between producers is particularly palpable. The grapes are in, the wines are being created and producers can take some time to relax. This makes for an exciting range of offerings, in this 34th year of winter and wine. Saturday June 6, between 11am & 4pm, head to Red Hill, where you will find 49 producers under one roof, showcasing around 150 wines and hosting seminars on chardonnay, pinot noir & shiraz. This is where the fun begins.

The large range of wines reflect winemaker Rollo Crittenden’s passion for traditional varieties as well as his inability to resist the temptation to experiment in the winery. The wine tasting experience is informative and educational but imperatively, it is fun and like anything to do with wine, best enjoyed with friends and family. The Crittenden Wine Centre will be open daily over the Queens Birthday Winter Wine Weekend and will have some exciting additions to the regular line up of wine flights. A retrospective tasting of our premium wines, in particular The Zumma Pinots, is just some of what we have on offer.

AWARD-WINNING WINES
AT YABBY LAKE
Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998. With a focus on single vineyard wines, single estate espresso by Market Lane Coffee and a relaxed lunch menu, Yabby Lake Vineyard is a must-see destination on the Mornington Peninsula.
Local chef Simon West’s menu changes daily, focusing on beautiful and relaxed fare, which partners perfectly with the wines from this special site. Start with a house-made parfait or rillettes, discover beautiful local seafood or enjoy Victorian organic beef to share. An outdoor deck takes in the stunning views of the vineyard and beyond, while inside, the open fire crackles and the wine and food experience is complemented by an engaging collection of artworks. The light and welcoming cellar door features recycled timbers throughout, complemented by industrial-style fixtures and the building’s original fireplace, built with local Victorian stone.
Visitors can take a seat at the tasting bench and taste through the complete Yabby Lake Vineyard and Red Claw range, relax in the lounge with a glass of wine by the fire, or simply pop in for a coffee at the bar. The wines from Yabby Lake Vineyard have achieved some exciting recognition in recent times. In 2013, Yabby Lake celebrated the history-making honour of being the first Pinot Noir to be awarded the revered Jimmy Watson Trophy. Twelve months later, another vintage of Single Block Pinot Noir amounted 11 trophies in less than a year, including the Len Evans Memorial Trophy for Champion Wine of Show at the 2014 National Wine Show and six trophies at the Sydney Royal Wine Show 2015 – among them ‘Wine of Show’ and the revered Fine Wine Partners Trophy for overall best performing wine in all state wine shows for the year. TRUFFLE HUNTING It is a crisp morning on Jenny McAuley’s Red Hill property. Thomas the English springer spaniel is leading the way around the truffiere, followed closely by Jenny and a group of keen truffle hunters. Thomas knows what he is looking for and it doesn’t take long, his well-trained nose firmly sweeping the ground, to find the hidden treasure he seeks. He sits and waits for Jenny’s command: “Show me.” With this, Thomas places his two paws out in front. Between them, hidden a few centimetres below the ground, is what everybody has come to see - that traditional truffle hunters searched jealously guarded rare, round fungus known as ‘black gold’. forests for this elusive fungus. This is the scene that plays out in winter In Red Hill today, the Perigord black truffle as the peninsula’s only commercial truffle (melanosporum) grows underneath a variety of oak grower, Red Hill Truffles, conducts its and hazelnut trees and is harvested during the winter popular public truffle hunts. months. Truffles are a rich delicacy, categorised in “Truffles enhance the flavour of dishes really well,” the same luxury league as caviar, foie gras explains Jenny. and French champagne. “They have an earthy, sensual, rich flavour. Originally found in France and Italy, it is “The aroma is just wonderfully overpowering. only during the last 20 years that truffles “It is a strong and pungent smell - you either have been produced in Australia. absolutely love it or you hate it.” Using specially-trained pigs in France and dogs in Italy, Australian truffles are predominantly cultivated in Tasmania and are starting to be sold to France and Italy during Europe’s off-season (Australian winter). These grow well in Red Hill because they like the red, volcanic soil and the favourable combination of sunlight and cool temperatures. Jenny’s truffiere has 1000 trees and she is hoping to collect up to 15kg of truffles this season. They will be sold to local restaurants and food producers, as well as to restaurants in Melbourne. Truffles can be shaved over foods like pasta, eggs and potatoes or into camembert, butter and gravy. Growing truffles is no easy task and only a small percentage of growers in Australia have achieved success. “I have been incredibly fortunate,” says Jenny. While Red Hill Truffles is the only commercial grower on the peninsula, Jenny McAuley other producers are experimenting, with Jenny’s full support, in the hope developing a local truffle industry to complement our fabulous wine and 0417 190 193 of food production. www.redhilltruffles.com To book a truffle hunt with Red Hill Truffles, contact Danielle at MP jennymcauley@redhilltruffles.com Experience on 0410 596 637 or email tour@mpexperience.com.au

It’s Hot and It’s New
The new hot spot of choice on the Mornington Peninsula is The Milbri Espresso, Bar and Restaurant.
An impressive addition for local revellers. Walk in and be impressed by the funky layout, the main dining area flows upstairs to the mezzanine which boasts a long cocktail & espresso bar plus adjacent high bench tables to sit or stand around. Perfect for a crowd. “Fresh honest food should be accompanied by great service and a refreshing beverage”, according to chef Chris Miller. On the floor Chris Fabri has customer service covered. The name Milbri comes from the combination of their names. Keen to explore their edgy dishes, many with South American flavours, we recently popped in for a long and fabulous lunch. Sharing is a super way to taste the mouthwatering options on this menu.
We were offered both the Brunch and Lunch/Dinner menus, great - we wanted to try everything! It came down to Croque Monsieur – a classic French toastie with smoked ham, Swiss cheese & béchamel ($12); Sticky BBQ Wings chargrilled sticky cola wings ($16); Sumac Calamari with white rum & lime zest aioli ($15); Quesadilla pulled pork, pico de gallo, chilli mint yoghurt dressing ($26) with sides of Sumac coated beer battered steak fries & house mayonnaise ($10) and Quinoa & watercress salad with goats cheese, sliced apple with a honey & fig dressing. Serious flavours, perfect presentation and a cool laid back vibe make this place a standout. Can I say there this menu has everything from Super Food liquid breakfasts to Rueben’s house made pastrami on rye or Argentinian 300g Chargrilled Rib-Eye Steak. They boast a plethora of liquid delights
including locally roasted coffees, exotic teas and amazing cocktails. The Milbri is definitely attracting the 20’s to 30’s for meals, drinks and bar snacks. It winds right up on the weekends as the place to be. With their extensive cocktail list it is no wonder, and every week with a different special! Whether you’re catching up for a drink with friends, enjoying breakfast, lunch or dinner, try uber cool The Milbri with it’s relaxed and friendly atmosphere. This place has the vibe, I love the feature wall covered in vintage newspaper clippings, apparently from the days both Milbri owners were born. This funky new venue has its own individual style. Definitely a place worth checking out. The Milbri A: 1183 Point Nepean Rd, Rosebud T: 5982 3901 E: info@themilbri.com.au www.themilbri.com.au

“To cook is to create, to share, to taste, to explore.
Whatever takes your fancy, just remember that it’s never too early or late for a piece of cake! “We look forward to seeing all of your lovely, smiling faces at A Mini Kitchen.”
This was Amy Minichiello’s mission when she was creating her lifelong dream of opening up her very own cafe.
“Cooking takes us on adventures through the culinary world with different flavours and cultures to be explored. “It really is one of life’s greatest pleasures and I feel blessed to be able to share my passion with every single person who comes to visit us.”
Sixteen months and one crazy up and down rollercoaster ride later she couldn’t be happier. Creating, cooking and baking using seasonal and local produce wherever possible is something that AMK is extremely passionate about. They even have their very own beehive, which is cared for by Save The Bees Australia. “We are also pleased to support Transition Farm in Fingal, who grow the most incredible produce, by collecting all of our food scraps and coffee waste and dropping it off in their compost once a week,” Amy says.
For Amy, food is a glorious thing.
Baking every delicious morsel at AMK allows them to offer a large selection of sugary delights, from the ever popular burnt butter and almond tart to the dark chocolate, blueberry and pistachio brownie and of course “granny’s scones”.

Since a local family – Erin, Eddy, Julie and Simon – started Sound Bar 18 months ago, it has garnered an impressive local following. So-called not just because the restaurant/ bar is located at Capel Sounds (Rosebud West), but also because it has a strong focus on live music, owing to the owners’ passion for providing a live music space for the local community to enjoy. Sound Bar features a range of local bands, touring artists and DJs, free Friday and Saturday nights, plus occasional Sunday sessions. The drinks list is varied, boasting local beers and ciders on tap as well as an extensive collection of craft beers, and some exciting cocktails, including the ‘Sound Bar Crusher’ – a tropical mix of Malibu, blue curacao, coconut cream and coconut water that highlights the bar’s beachfront locale. Sound Bar has gained a strong local following due to its delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. People flock to the bar for its famous big breakfasts and ‘breakfast burritos’ (on
weekends you can choose one of three cocktails as a hair of the dog special!). Sound Bar smokes the bacon and prepares the pulled pork in-house. Each Wednesday, the venue holds a ‘Pub Night’ from 6pm, with a meat tray raffle, ‘beer o fortune’ and drink specials to get you through hump day. Try the much-loved ‘Oink’ pulled pork burger, the ‘Moo’ or the vegetarian ‘Garden’ on a Thursday night at ‘Burger ‘n’ Pot & Poker’ night’, when it’s just $16 for a burger and a pot. A WHOLE LOT OF HART The Hart of Tyabb Café, located at the Tyabb Packing House, continues to set itself apart as a destination venue offering great food, coffee, service and ambience. Coming into the cooler months, there is a new winter menu consisting of hearty soups, delicious homemade gnocchi and the ever-popular pies. Head chef Dean Caldwell strives to achieve a perfect balance between café fare and fine dining. His latest menu includes mouth-watering gnocchi with basil pesto and parmesan or blue cheese and prosciutto. You’ll also find delicious pies baked in a sour cream pastry, containing delicious flavours like beef cheek and red wine, beef cheek and Guinness or lamb and rosemary. These come with yummy sides of seared beans, slivered almonds and creamy mash. A selection of regularly changing soups including roasted pumpkin, vegetable,
roasted tomato or cauliflower and bacon are just what the doctor ordered to warm you up on those chilly days. But don’t fret, your old favourites like the haloumi burger (a hit with the vegos!), the salmon croquettes and the pan fried baby snapper with crispy school prawns and lemon sauce (pictured) are certainly still available. Head along on Mother’s Day and enjoy a lazy breakfast or lunch, or simply stop by for a coffee and cheeky slice of cake. Now that our summer crops have well and truly finished and successive plantings of cool season veggies are underway, it’s a good time to consider how to rejuvenate those ‘tired’ beds that gave us so much delicious produce over the warmer months. Rotating crops through our beds is a sensible practise and will benefit the growth of each subsequent crop while looking after the soil, but if you can afford the space it is a good idea to reinvigourate the bed(s) that have been exhausted the most. To continue to grow in nutrient depleted beds will only lead to smaller, less healthy and less nutrient dense crops. There are a number of ways we can reintroduce nutrients into our beds. Firstly, we can add our composts, manures or organic fertilisers to the soil in layers or lightly turned in and reapply mulches. If space is limited, then these beds can be replanted with the subsequent season’s crops. However, if there is already enough room for a cool season crop and you can afford to “rest” a bed or two, growing a green manure or cover crop will not only revitalise the soil but it will also
( 100

give the entire soil ecosystem time to reenergise. Green manure and cover crops can be sourced from any of our wonderful Australian online seed companies. Be sure to select seeds that are specific to your growing zone and climate. For Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula you can use blends that include the common crops such as mustards, peas, oats, vetch, fenugreek and clovers. Most of the seed companies will have blends for specific purposes. For example the mustards (and marigolds) have bio-fumigation properties that will help clean the soil supressing certain pest and disease populations, while the legumous crops will help add nitrogen to the soil. All crops once turned in will also be adding valuable organic matter to the soil. Other useful additions to your soil that you may want to look into include rock dusts, mycorrhizal powders and liquids, beneficial bacteria products and of course the organic fertilisers with fish and seaweed as their bases. Although there is much benefit from a range of products, it is always preferable to be able to achieve our desired levels of soil nutrition while relying as little
as possible on bringing in manufactured products. Which brings us to composting, worm-farming and homemade liquid manures…which we will discuss in more detail in the June edition.

It’s Better To Sell Your Home IN WINTER!!!
Contrary to popular belief, winter can be the best time to sell your home with fewer properties on the market to compete with and the laws of supply and demand helping to maximize prices.
While the real estate market traditionally slows over winter, demand for quality homes remains constant year round and those who get in early often maximize their sales result. A flood of homes coming on the market in spring means vendors are competing against a larger number of other properties – often without a corresponding increase in the number of buyer, says Realtywriters director and photographer Les Hams. Based in Mt Martha, Realtywriters has been charting the local real estate market for 18 years. Its founders Les and Jody Hams wrote and edited local newspapers before stepping into property marketing and work hand in hand with many of the peninsula’s leading agencies. Another advantage of targeting June and July to hit the market instead of August and September is that agents will have more time to better manage a successful sales campaign outside of the Spring rush. “A lot of home owners want to wait for the garden to burst into color before putting up a For Sale sign but every year we see some of the best results happening in the period before the spring onslaught.’’ “It’s a competitive market and you need to take advice from a range of sources to get the best outcome. “We’re finding presentation is becoming more and more important but that doesn’t necessarily mean

using costly hire furniture – it can be a simple de-cluttering exercise, re-arranging what’s already there or using a stylist for some fresh input. All agents have access to professionals who can help and can offer advice on the best way to market your home.’’ Together with eye-catching photography, Realtywriters also has a team of journalists preparing catchy advertising,
qualified draftspeople producing floorplans, videographers, artists creating computer-generated visuals of new developments, as well as licensed drone operators providing aerial photography and a library of more than 30,000 aerial images of the peninsula.
