There’s a lot about Emma Freedman you probably don’t know. For instance, this much loved TV and radio host could do with a little help from the Mornington Peninsula right now. And we mean, right now. It turns out Emma lived on the Mornington Peninsula in her teens, attended school here from Year 7 to Year 9 and she still has family here (keep reading, the connection about what you need to do is coming). The 28-year-old now lives in Sydney and has created a unique pack design for Twinings’ ‘Morning Tea’, which can be seen in supermarkets across the country for a limited time, alongside designs created by Carrie Bickmore (Network Ten’s ‘The Project’), Nicole Kidman (need we background?) and Samantha Harris (Australian model). The four Australian women are finalists in the Twinings Design Challenge. What’s touching is that Emma’s design, pictured, is a visual representation of her childhood memories growing up in Mount Martha and visiting our beautiful local beaches for regular swims (note the bathing boxes)! She has chosen the Captain Courageous Foundation to receive 10 cents from every pack sold and (here’s where you, our readers, come in) if Emma can poll more votes for her design than Bickmore, Kidman and Harris, her pack will remain on shelves for the next four years and her charity will reap the rewards. So, she needs Mornington Peninsula residents to get behind her beach design and vote for it by May 8. It’s a tight deadline, we know, but it’s a charitable competition Mornington Peninsula Magazine couldn’t resist being involved in. If you miss the voting deadline, you can still buy a pack with Emma’s design on it for a limited time and help her charity! Captain Courageous Foundation exists to find a cure for children suffering from life threatening Bone Marrow Failure disease. Emma explains why she chose Mount Martha: “I was inspired by living at the beach when I was younger. I do remember when I was in my mid-teens I would go for a swim of a morning at Mount Martha, come back home, dress into my school uniform and have a cup of tea before jumping on the bus. I looked back at those memories to create an image that reflected my experience of my first cup of tea,” she says. As to whether she still visits the Peninsula, the answer is a definite yes! She was here on Christmas Day visiting her family, in fact. “I came down for Christmas and spent some time around Cape Schanck,” she says. “I don’t get down enough, working seven days.” Discussing her competition, she laughs. “Those are some pretty nice names to be in competition with!” she says, admitting she’s a Kidman fan and would love to meet her one day. Sorrento pair bring SAXX Sorrento locals Sarah and Chris Scarlett are doing big things, with briefs. LAST OCTOBER WOODLEIGH SCHOOL WERE ANNOUNCED AS THIS YEAR’S VICTORIAN STATE IMPACT AWARD WINNER, IN THE NAB SCHOOL’S FIRST AWARD. The award gives Woodleigh $60,000 in funding for our outstanding school-community partnership. We were selected from 12 Impact Award winners around VIC for our successful partnership with the Brotherhood of St Laurence and the New Hope Foundation, titled ‘The Homework Club’. This partnership, which is part of our wider Community Service Program aims to improve the educational prospects of newly-arrived refugees in the local Frankston area and to encourage the students from the

School to engage in community volunteering. The partnership was developed three years ago when the School identified the need to develop relationships with the community in an area of need; they called upon the Brotherhood of St Laurence to start The Homework Club to support Sudanese refugee students and their families. The Homework Club is entirely voluntary and runs for two hours every Tuesday after school. Woodleigh’s students travel to the venue to tutor, mentor and support the students who come from various other schools in the area. Our students have demonstrated increased cultural awareness and social responsibility from their involvement in this project and

students who have left the school also remain involved. There is even a waiting list to become a volunteer tutor for the Homework Club! Woodleigh School Principal, Jonathan Walter was rapt with the award. “It’s great to see the worth of innovative learning programs – which have both social and educational value, recognized with this level of funding. After three years, the Homework Club is no longer in its infancy. This award ensures that it will mature and grow as it should – as a positive model, which can be shared and re-applied to other Community Service programs within our School and the wider community.”

There is no doubt that school camps provide children with many memorable experiences, some good, some quite challenging. As adults, many of our school memories are still related to the camps that we attended. At Peninsula Grammar, camps are a compulsory part of the curriculum. Designed by an expert outdoor education team, the outdoor experiences created for Years 5 to 8 students in particular provide learning opportunities not possible within the four walls of a classroom. “Working as a team in an outdoor setting with their

peers, their teachers and other professionals to take on personal and social challenges is one of the most empowering experiences for our students,” said the Head of the Middle Years program, Muriel Bakker. “The relationships formed during this time of year are really important and our camps are all about engaging our students and developing positive interpersonal relationships with fellow students and mentors.” Camps at Peninsula Grammar are definitely jam-packed with activities with little downtime - setting up camp, preparing meals and cleaning up afterwards, hiking, abseiling, rafting, bike riding, surfing and many individual and team challenges. The children are exposed to a range

Connie Johnson doesn’t need much of an introduction. She is one of Australia’s best-known cancer advocates, she’s the sister of Australian actor Samuel (Sam) Johnson and she has terminal breast cancer. You may recall Sam rode his unicycle around Australia a few years ago in honour of Connie, 40, and in the name of breast cancer awareness and medical research. He made a headline or two doing it. Connie, a mother-of-two, has a strong connection with the Mornington Peninsula. She lived here for about three years in her teens and she attended Mornington Secondary College. Connie and Sam have raised millions for cancer research since her terminal diagnosis and, after recently being told by her medical team that she has to stop chemotherapy, she has one last “hurrah” planned for May 10 in Canberra where she hopes to raise another $1million. It’s called the ‘Big Heart Project’ and she hopes Mornington Peninsula residents will get on board. Speaking to Mornington Peninsula Magazine, Connie recalled her years at Mornington Secondary College fondly. “When I was about 13 I started there, my hair was just growing back from my first cancer and the teachers and kids were great,” she said by phone from interstate. “I was so scared but I didn’t need to be.” Connie and Sam’s family moved a lot when they were kids but she still recalls her textiles teacher, Mrs Gene Young, at Mornington Secondary College who taught her to sew and whose class made her a “beautiful quilt” and a massive banner for her ‘Love Your Sister’ campaign. “We hang the banner at nearly every event we host,” Connie said. Mornington Secondary College also played a key role in Sam’s unicycle ride, Connie recalled. “They had a goal of matching every kilometre Sam rode with one dollar. Over the year of the ride they raised more than $15,000! Dan Turnbull from the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation takes me through it. Through the history, cultural importance and the perseverance. Through the array of Aboriginal artefacts, self-made shields and keepsakes made by his grandmother in the glass cabinet in his living room. Over the vast maps outlining Bunurong Country from the Werribee River down to the Peninsula’s tip in Portsea and into the deep waters of Port Phillip Bay that line his office walls (Bunurong Country also extends to the Prom). Dan Turnbull knows a lot about where his mob comes from and where he believes they should be heading. He picks up a shield and explains. “Our Ancestors have always known Point Nepean as Monmar. It is one of the

most sacred sites on the Peninsula and is the traditional land of the Burin’yong Bulluk who are a clan of the Bunurong/Boon Warrung. There are Aboriginal artefacts right across the Mornington Peninsula. Our people have lived in the region for more than 35,000 years.” He leans over to show me one of his shields. “All symbols here are viewed from Sky Country. Overhead. These u shapes are people. The more u shapes there are indicates position in the mob - an elder, while the vertical lines one line is a woman (digging stick) and two lines is a man (two spears). Long curly lines are the sand dunes while concentric circles represent campsites. And here, here are the daughter streams.” Indigenous artefacts tell their stories through symbology and craft. Dan continues. “About seven years ago we worked with archaeologists within the quarantine station at Point Nepean and found an 18,000-year-old site! The bay was a grassland back then. It only filled with water 10,000 years later which is thousands of years before the Great Pyramids were built. There have been findings

from the Cranbourne sands, Wonga (Arthur’s Seat) and Carrum Swamp areas. You know the park next to the Karingal Hub? There’s a house next to it called Ballam Homestead. It was one of the first houses in the area. A bullroarer and pointing bone which had been collected from the Bunurong people in the early contact period and kept onsite until a recent clean out were handed back by the owners.” (Bullroarers are for communicating with the spirits, while message sticks have been used to convey communications from mob to mob throughout Indigenous history.) “It’s a misconception that the message was on the stick. There was an identifying symbol of the person who was sending the message. It was the carrier who relayed the message,” he continues. The Bunurong Land Council in conjunction with archaeologists are excavating a Lyndhurst site as we speak. They are digging down 1.7 metres into ‘coffee MAY 2017 (66)

rock’ and finding pieces that could be up to 32,000 years old. Dan continues to go through his selection of stone tools, each one delicately carved for a uniquely special use. “Flaked edge axes were tied to their wooden handles with kangaroo tail sinew and solidified with grass resin. Greenstone ‘blanks’ from Mount William in the Grampians were traded for three possum skin cloaks or 90 skins and made into axes. They took months to create and were buried with the person because of how valuable they were.” We look at one of the rice shell necklaces Dan’s grandmother made. “My grandmother told me that it took up to ten times to get one shell threaded because they are so small.” The patience to complete the double stringed necklace is obvious. “I’ll never know how to do it. It’s women’s business.” Maybe so, but Dan is certainly in the business of uncovering Saltwater people’s business. Bunurong business.

a multifaceted experience BY KATE SEARS

There is a hidden gem in the grounds of McClelland Gallery in Langwarrin. For more than 40 years the Frankston & Peninsula Lapidary Club has been specialising in faceting, cabochon, opal carving, chain weaving, silver smithing, and mineral collection. The art of faceting is the process of cutting and polishing a variety of gemstones, from sapphire to quartz. Cabochon, on the other hand, is cutting, grinding and polishing a range of rocks and minerals. Club members can express their artistic talents with opal carving and chain weaving classes, making bracelets and earrings, while silver smithing classes teach them to make settings for the stones they find, or create jewellery using soldering and casting techniques. Field trips led by experienced organisers give members the chance to experience the excitement of finding their own semi-precious gems and minerals, which they can then cut, polish and set into beautiful statement jewellery. The club has a range of minerals and gems on display so new members are able to identify the treasures they find on field trips. The club also invites the public to donate any unwanted minerals they have to add to this display, or people can sell them on a commission basis in the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual rock auction. This August 26-27 at the Cranbourne Public Hall the club will have 20 traders attending for the Annual Gem Show. BY LIZ ROGERS Colour trend forecasting is being able to look at what’s happening now to understand what is going to be happening in the future in the world of fashion, design and architecture and this year Greenery, the humble colour of the trees, plants and the sea gets the nod. It appears that taking a breath of fresh air is what it’s all about, says the Pantone Colour Institute, who are the masters in colour trend predictions. Just look at the growing trend of vertical and rooftop gardens and leafy plazas (and Mornington’s own Lilo Café), but green didn’t always get the wrap it deserves. Historically speaking, good old green has had a somewhat chequered past. The colour green is a symbol of life, luck and hope – but it is also a symbol of greed, poison and the devil. Green pigments have been used since ancient times. Egyptians used the copper carbonate hydroxide mineral malachite. Emeralds and other green stones were admired by the Romans, and some 19th Century scholars even speculated that Greeks couldn’t see green. The colour was denigrated by Bauhaus artist Kandinsky,

while the Mona Lisa wears green although she is not from a noble family (which in Renaissance times marked social status). In 1814, the Wilhelm Dye and White Lead Company in Germany developed an emerald green dye that became all the rage in Victorian Britain. Unfortunately, it was made with arsenic and those who wore the clothing dripped in the dye soon became deathly ill developing scabs and vomiting blood while their livers and kidneys shut down! These days green is the symbol of environmental causes, social justice and the mission to save the planet. It is also seen as the colour that represents all things changeable and fleeting like childhood, love and money. Whether you believe it symbolises luck (like the Irish) or regrowth and calm - one thing’s for sure, Kermit the frog found it hard “having to spend each day the colours of the leaves” and blending “in with so many other ordinary things”. Whether on trend or not, the green of our great planet gives us life and that’s no trite thing. Sorry Kermit.

Herd about the latest additions to EastLink’s landscaping team? Goats are now helping clear noxious weeds and reduce the fuel load from a steep and rocky parcel of land along the tollway. The landscaping team responsible for maintaining 480ha identified a small area where blackberry and flax-leaved broom had taken hold and where overgrown vegetation presented a potential fire risk. However, the rugged area posed significant safety risks to staff and equipment. The environmentally friendly, sustainable and safe solution was for the team to engage the services of a herd of goats. The sure-footed animals are at home on the tough terrain and have displayed quite an appetite for the weeds since being introduced to the area last December. Unable to get on to the tollway or the EastLink Trail, the animals are able to safely feed on

the weeds’ foliage and leaf buds, which exhausts the root system and kills the plant while leaving the soil fungi, insects and worms unharmed. The area’s potential fire load is not only being eaten, it is also being trampled by the goats, and this meant the area required no extra attention over summer. The goats have been provided and cared for by Colin Arnold, of Graze Away, who has been working with goats for 20 years to assist in the restoration of native habitats. These ‘Staff Members of the Month’ will provide a better habitat for ground fauna and will in turn attract a greater variety of birds, such as wrens, kites, butcher birds, finches and kookaburras.

Microbravery: what is it and why do we need it?

Ordering a smoothie. Asking someone if you can pat their dog. Requesting assistance in a store. What do these everyday acts have in common? They’re all forms of microbravery: small, everyday risks that take us out of our personal comfort zones. These small acts of bravery can be life changing especially for girls, helping them to build confidence and self-esteem. A 2014 study by Keds and Girls Leadership, highlighted a bravery gap where boys were more likely than girls to say they were brave. The study found that 59% of teen girls define bravery as a heroic act in a dangerous situation, while only 18% of teen girls define brave as standing up for their beliefs and being honest about who they are. So when being brave feels like it is too big, it can seem out of reach to those who want to try it, and a lot scarier than it has to be. Toorak College wants every girl to know that being brave is a skill best learned gradually over time, and like any new

skill it takes practice, persistence and patience. Bravery is built, not born and microbravery allows girls to build courage slowly in small increments. Eventually they develop the confidence to tackle bigger challenges. A girls-only approach to education provides a learning environment where girls feel empowered, where they can engage in more healthy competition and risk-taking. These skills set girls up for leadership and life success. Dogs seem to be the favourite four-legged friend so far in our Peninsula Pets segment and the canine companions of Exceptional Carpentry’s owners Tara and Mark Watkins are no exception! The couple’s beloved Labrador Brinkly (named after the dog in the movie You’ve got mail) passed when she was 12 years old and now seven-year-old Boxer Satchmo, who joined the family when Tara and Mark got married, has become the couple’s new shadow (Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong is one of Tara’s favourite musicians and his song ‘What a wonderful World’ played at their wedding). Satchmo is obsessed with water just like her predecessor Brinkly, so going on a walk anywhere near water turns into a mad adventure - even though Boxers are not known for swimming. “She was brought up by a water mad Labrador so she learnt to swim as a pup”, explains Tara. “She even dives under to retrieve items. She also loves watching the kids (who she adores) in the bath. She’s fascinated by it. Unfortunately, she also adores our shoes! Whenever they go missing we go straight to her kennel. There’s always a stash at the back.” This lovely little dynamo also fancies herself as the chook’s best friend. “She’ll lie down and let them wander around her”, says Tara. “She’s also a tad over the top about food just like the beautiful Brinkly who would lie down to eat! Kitchen scraps always went down fast and furiously at the Watkins’, and they still do!” Tara and Mark have always had dogs and can’t imagine life without them. Boxers have been part of the Watkins’ extended family for more than 50 years and Satchmo’s role in the business is to ‘supervise’ Mark while he is in the workshop. Satchmo also goes along to family events and stays with Granny, Grandpa and their Boxer Mia to enjoy walks on the beach, scraps of home-made meals and snoozing in front of the wood fire (just like she does at home) when Tara and Mark can’t take her with them. “She’s a big part of our world,” says Tara. Gold was the sound resonating from great master J S Bach’s Sonata BWV 1034, brilliantly arranged by David Griiffiths for clarinet and continuo, hosted by the Peninsula Music Society at the Peninsula Community Theatre on Saturday, March 18. Timothy Young (piano) and Svetlana Bogosavljevic (cello) superbly partnered David’s clarinet, in a distinguished Ensemble Liaison recital. Rich justice was done to Bach’s composition, with mellow but vibrant and lively melody, and perfect timing paced with sweetness. There followed Emil Hartman’s Serenade Op 24, moving with perfection into a warm passion. The trio then held their audience spellbound with astounding and world class virtuosity in delivering Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Timothy’s piano bringing special captivation. Svetlana and David then carried the show with rhythmic ease into the Argentinian nostalgia of Astor Piazzolla’s tango: Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, arranged by David for clarinet, cello and piano followed. Culminating the recital was Bizet’s Fantasy on themes from Carmen, again gripping an audience enthralled. In all, a wonderful evening, its outset with the opening of the concert season generously mellowed by a tasting of excellent Bittern Estate wines. Theirs is the business of producing beautiful organic skincare ‘handcrafted on the Mornington Peninsula’ from their factory in Rosebud. With more than 100 stockists in every state in Australia, it’s fair to say this mother-daughter working relationship works. Jude is the creative genius (or the mad professor as they fondly refer to her) and Sarah is the commerce brain. Sarah explains: “Fifteen years ago Jude started making soap from olive oil we produced on our family farm. From her small saucepans on the stove at home, we now make the products in 100 litre kettles in our factory. My background is commerce, so my focus is on an entirely different aspect of the business. I think that’s why we work so well together - our roles and interests are quite separate.” What do they love about working with each other? “Everything!” Sarah says. “It just feels so right, like home, it’s hard to describe. My Mum is one of those people you just like being around, she’s funny, loves to have a chat and is always making me a coffee or trying to feed me. I don’t think you ever stop being a Mum, that’s what I love about her. I feel so blessed to have her in my life and to be creating these memories with her.” And Jude? “It is so wonderful to work with Sarah. We may not always agree on things but always manage to come to decisions respectfully and still laughing,” she says. “Working all day together doesn’t change that we will often talk or text after hours having things still to talk over.”

ERICA AND VICTORIA – FIONA’S OF MORNINGTON Erica and Victoria bought Fiona’s of Mornington in Main Street 14 years ago and since then this fabulous pair have cemented their business as a ‘go-to’ store on the Mornington Peninsula for high end, exclusive fashion (think Mela Purdi, Ginger & Smart and much more). This mother and daughter have a lot of fun together in business, a “truckload” of constructive arguments along the way and a wonderful bond that’s obvious when you see them together. “After 14 years of working together, we’d want to!” Victoria adds, laughing. Mum Erica and daughter Victoria do their fashion buying together, they often attend events together and they collaborate to organise the annual Fields of Fashion charity luncheon at Mornington Racecourse. So, what is the secret to working together so successfully? “When one is in the shop the other one isn’t!” Erica laughs. “We buy our labels together and although we have arguments over what we’re buying, the blend (of older and younger generations) works well,” Erica explains. “We’ve always had a good relationship and working together makes us more in contact on a day-to-day basis.” Both agree there is no boss here, but rather a partnership peppered with the right amount of fun. Their regular luncheons together in the city during buying trips are a rather nice touch too. LOIS AND MICHELLE-ANN – MICHELLE-ANN BRAS AND SWIMWEAR The mother-daughter team behind michelle-ann bras and swimwear – the iconic retail store at the Barkly St roundabout in Main Street Mornington - is as enduring as the successful business they have run together for the past 32 years. Lois and her daughter Michelle-ann are business savvy best friends who work hard, have fun together and genuinely enjoy each other’s company. The happy vibe here is reflected no more acutely than in their staff retention – most of them have been with Lois and Michelle-ann for more than 10 years and store manager Helen has accrued a fabulous 22 years! “We just get on really well,” Michelle-ann explains when asked the secret. “We think quite similarly, luckily. And if we don’t like each other’s ideas we can say so.” Lois, who started the business 50 years ago (that’s right, michelle-ann bras and swimwear celebrates a milestone 50 years this year) describes her daughter as her “best friend”. “We always have been very close,” she says. Both agree the ability to work hard, bounce ideas off each other and have fun are crucial to a successful mother-daughter working relationship. They have also bred and shown horses together for 35 years and Michelleann’s riding has taken her to America, where she was part of a winning team representing Australia! The occasional interstate and international buying trip together (including one to Paris for a lingerie fair) sounds pretty sweet too. “We work very hard but we have a lot of fun along the way,” Lois says, smiling at her daughter. During the Victorian Gold Rush ships were regularly departing from Port Phillip with consignments of gold of immense value. A violent assault on a ship to steal the gold was a serious possibility as attacks on escorts bringing gold to Melbourne from the goldfields were not uncommon. There was also a concern that the colony of Victoria was vulnerable in time of war. Though help from Great Britain, in wartime, might take months there was a French settlement in New Caledonia and a war with Russia seemed to be likely. It was with such thought in mind that in July 1954 a warship was ordered for the protection of the colony and the ships in Port Phillip. Launched in June of the following year, the sloop-of-war Her Majesty’s Colonial Ship Victoria arrived at Melbourne on May 31, 1856, under the command of Commander W H Norman RN. A fine looking vessel with a length of 54m, she was rigged as a barque and capable of making 12 knots under sail. Her steam engine of 150 nominal horsepower could drive her at 9.5 knots and under sail and screw she could achieve 14.5 knots which was a high speed for the time. When she arrived in 1856 she was armed with a 32 pounder swivel gun at the bow and one

32 pounder on either side but later mounted three such guns on each side. Though HMCS Victoria never had to defend the colony from attack she gave valuable service. In 1860 and 1861 she carried troops to New Zealand and some of her men took part in the Maori wars. From there she was sent to help in the unsuccessful search for Burke and Wills in the Gulf of Carpentaria where the present town of Normanton was named after Commander William Norman. She was involved in the rescue of survivors from several shipwrecks, including the immigrant ship Netherby on King Island in 1866, was used in hydrographic surveys and carried the first salmon eggs to Tasmania to begin the industry. The first ship of the Victorian Navy, she was de-commissioned in 1882 and was sold to Western Australia in 1884. Peninsula businesswoman Kirsten Norman is on the cusp of earning national recognition for her forward thinking professional bookkeeping business, as a finalist in the Australian Accounting Awards. Sam Keck is a young entrepreneur. There’s never been any doubt about that since he opened his award winning roastery café Commonfolk Coffee Company in Mornington’s industrial estate when he was 24. He’s now 29, has a second successful café in McCrae (Merchant & Maker) and he’s just been named the Frankston Foundry and Rotary Club of Frankston’s Peninsula Young Entrepreneur of the Year. When Mornington Peninsula Magazine caught up with Sam, he was visiting coffee farmers in Central and South America, as one does when they are an entrepreneur, but he took time out of his crazy schedule to answer a few questions. What are your thoughts on being named the Peninsula Young Entrepreneur of the Year? I was pleasantly surprised and humbled to be recognised for my businesses. Like a lot of small business owners, so much of my time and energy is spent focusing on work and having someone tap you on the shoulder and say well done is really

incredible. More to the point, it gives our entire team a real lift and a sense of pride because of what we have achieved. At the moment I’m not even the most celebrated award winner in the business - with our Head Chef Roong Saisombat the current SOAR Woman of the Year for her tireless and against-the-odds work as an immigrant female chef. She’s probably more inspiring than I am! If you were to inspire others, what advice would you give? I think a lot of young entrepreneurs just want to be entrepreneurs. They learn the buzz words and focus a lot on developing their business acumen but I think often

they can be missing the key ingredient any successful entrepreneur needs, which is a passion for a product and a passion for people. I never studied business, sales, marketing or any ‘entrepreneurial’ course. Instead I got down and dirty becoming the best barista/roaster/leader that I could be. I scoured the internet for the latest trends in coffee, I met with key industry figures asking questions every chance I got, and most importantly I developed my own opinions and style of coffee. I also got stuck into the business of people and learned what it meant to rally a team together and invest in your staff to bring the best out of everyone. My advice would be to figure out what your business

is, get good at it by working for/with the industry leaders (volunteer if you have to), and figure out how to involve others in your journey and invest in them. You have two successful businesses on the Peninsula. Any plans for more? We’re always looking to grow our family. In fact, we just launched Commonfolk’s mobile arm ‘Bussy McBusface’! It’s a refurbished Mercedes school bus that lets us bring the brews to you. We’re also in the process of developing an international market for our product. We’re looking very closely at Asia, in particular Hong Kong, but I guess you’ll just have to wait and see!

When Rollo Crittenden stands up and announces “There’s going to be quite a bit of wine to get through today and the pours are going to be quite generous,” you know you’re in for a food and wine experience. Crittenden Estate – one of the Mornington Peninsula’s longest established and most celebrated wineries - played host to more than 100 guests as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival on Saturday, April 8. Naturally, tickets sold out.

Over four delicious hours, Crittenden Estate and Pei Modern took their guests on a four-course food and wine journey, peppered with talks by Rollo about the estate wines accompanying each course, the fermentation process and more. Pei on the Peninsula is one of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival’s signature Peninsula events. Such is its significance that the festival’s gastronomy manager was among the guests seated at the communal tables under a marquee on the lawn overlooking the lake. Pei on the Peninsula was a relaxed feast in a stunning setting. After sampling the 2016 Los Hermanos Saludos on arrival, guests sipped a range of premium estate wines, among them The Zumma 2015 Savagnin and 2016 OGGI with entrée, and finished with dessert (white chocolate, yoghurt, burnt fig and sesame) accompanied

by 2016 Pinocchio Moscato. Estate grown apples, tomatoes and even pumpkins featured as edible table centrepieces and Rollo and Zoe Crittenden oversaw the event personally. After commencing a music and vocal teaching position at the college in 2014, current Head of Music Jacqui Rodden was determined to not only lift the level of vocal and instrumental music at the college, but to combine all the performing art forms in a musical production. “We chose The Wizard of Oz because it had so many wonderful vocal roles for solo and chorus and had a number of big dance scenes,” Jacqui said. The production also gives instrumental music students the opportunity to perform in an orchestra at the Frankston Arts Centre, which will be directed by Jacqui and feature students from Years 7 to 12. Jacqui now teaches more than 30 vocal students, and the school boasts an impressive choir and a cappella ensemble. Recent enhancement programs in the performing arts, specifically dance, have given seasoned dance teachers Taryn Sabell and Jennii Johnson an opportunity to work with and choreograph talented performers and prepare them for Wakakirri in 2016 and the college’s musical production this year. The Wizard of Oz showcases the college’s impressive performing arts students. Thirty-three dancers from all

year levels fill the stage in glittering snowflake tutus and vibrant poppy costumes in Act 1 and return as menacing Jitterbugs in Act 2. VCE Dance student Madeline Turnbull features as the acrobatic commander of the monkeys, sidekick to the stunning-in-green yet evil Witch of the West, performed by VCE Drama student Julia Gregory. William Buckley, another VCE Drama student, takes the title role. Year 10 soprano Iris Roberts studies voice with Jacqui and will be playing the starry-eyed Kansas girl Dorothy. Jacqui’s other vocal students also headline this production: Kayla Wilson as the Tinman, Daniel Gough as the Scarecrow, and bass-baritone Trent Taylor as the Cowardly Lion. The Wizard of Oz is the first musical production with full orchestra that the school has prepared in a long time. “It really is a whole school production,” said choreographer, teacher and production coordinator Sarah Cossey. “VCAL Technology students have helped build sets and props, art students have contributed to media and marketing, and a large number of staff and students have assisted in rehearsals, costuming, make-up and design.” The Wizard of Oz will be performed at Frankston Arts Centre, 27-37 Davey Street Frankston on Friday 12 May at 7:30pm and Saturday 13 May 13 at 1:00pm and 7:30pm. The Rotary Club of Frankston Sunrise is the proud sponsor of the 7th annual Children of Ghana Charity Ball on June 17, 6.30pm at the Frankston Arts Centre. This fabulous night, started just seven years ago by local family Tony and Cheryl Carter, has become an important date in everyone’s calendar. The Carters started raising funds for children living in poverty in Ghana after their daughter Aimee Braganza spent more than 12 months volunteering at a children’s home in 2005. It was an experience that changed her life forever, as it did for Tony and Cheryl after their visit in 2010. With the help of local Rotary clubs, they have been working tirelessly to raise awareness and help provide the children and babies with a happier future. Funds have been generated into supplying school uniforms, education, medical services, food and clean water. Aimee returned to Ghana in September 2016 to visit the children, visit local Rotary clubs and look for worthwhile projects for the Carters to support. This year the funds raised will help provide fresh drinking water to a remote village with help from Disaster Aid International and the Sky Juice Foundation. The Carters also hope to arrange concreting of a school yard at the Offin Children’s Centre in Kumasi. This area, used by the school children and children from the home, changes from a dust bowl in the dry season to a muddy mess in the wet season, making play time almost impossible. The Days for Girls International project, which was very well received on Aimee’s recent visit to Ghana, will be the Carters’ last project for 2017. They will be seeking a local Rotary club in Accra or Kumasi to help implement this and the other projects. “Elemental Landscapes” Exhibition May 12 - 28

Wilinski’s view to Europe Marek Wilinski is charming and so is his vibrant art. This painter works throughout the night in the quiet to produce acrylic on canvas ‘stories’ that tell of his European roots and how they connect with his adopted homeland Australia. “We came to Australia in 1981 and I really believe that if we hadn’t migrated from Poland I would have never painted. I told my wife then that I was going to paint full time. And so, I did”, he says. Marek has no formal training bar working hard at developing his craft. He’s been painting for 25 years, works 10 hours a day, and makes his gesso, stretches his own canvas and experiments with colour, form and texture to produce work that speaks from the heart with visual eccentricity. He also travels widely which is represented in his eclectic body of work including figurative, landscape and still life explorations. These days his paintings hang in collections throughout Australia and MAY 2017 (66)

Poland. “I have two souls when I paint. One for me and one for others. They are both valuable and valid. Painting is hard because you need to choose and it’s about timing. It’s a physical involvement. My work was viewed in an advertising campaign for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. That changed everything”, he explains. Third generation glass blowers Hamish and Calum Donaldson are going through the slow process of learning how to blow glass at Gordon Studio Glassblowers in Red Hill. It takes years to learn the hand skills of furnace glassblowing, so they will be developing their own ideas and learning the skills to achieve them. Over the past 27 years Grant Donaldson and Eileen Gordon have developed and grown their business. Autumn hues at Whistlewood Turn of the season colours feature in the Autumn Salon exhibition of Aboriginal art from around Australia at Shoreham’s Whistlewood Gallery this month. Selected by Whistlewood’s curators Susan & Emily McCulloch, works come from all regions of Australia including some of the most remote, such as tiny homeland communities in the Pilbara, the Western Desert and the Pitjantjatjara lands of South Australia. “It’s fascinating to see the different hues come to the fore in paintings each season,” says Whistlewood’s cocurator Susan McCulloch. “As well as the autumn tones of yellows, browns and deep soft oranges, there are striking new black and white and soft pink paintings, as well as those in lovely blues reflective of the clear colour of outback skies and waterholes after the recent rains.”

The McCullochs are also gearing up for one of their popular Art Parades that launches their Winter Salon on the Queen’s Birthday weekend on Saturday, June 10. After the release of his blues-inspired EP The Burke & Wills Sessions last year, coupled with a host of live shows and festival performances, Matt Katsis shows no sign of relaxing the pace in 2017. Matt hopes Colours, his new single to follow last year’s Need You Here, will be out this month, and a new EP, As The River Runs, is scheduled for a mid-year release. A tour to promote the new EP is also planned. “The bare bones of the song and lyrics came about in reflection,” he says of Need You Here. “It’s about wising up as we get older, having that special someone by your side through thick and thin to share life’s experiences.”

Blending blues, roots and folk music, Matt’s raw vocals and command of the acoustic guitar have endeared himself to audiences here and overseas. During each of the past three years he has played more than 100 in-venue shows as well as numerous street performances and festivals, including Queensland’s Blues on Broadbeach, Bendigo Blues & Roots Festival, Bruthen Blues Festival, Swagger Music Festival and the Queenscliff Music Festival. He headed to the US for a string of shows in Oregon in 2014, and in 2015 he embarked on a search for creative inspiration through Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta. At a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881, the men and women of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve went head-tohead with the Aboriginal Protection Board. Their goal was both simple and revolutionary: to be allowed to continue the brilliant experiment in self-determination they had pioneered for themselves on the scrap of country left to them. Coranderrk recreates the Inquiry. This is both great theatre and great history. It revives the voices of all those, black and white, who fought for a better pact between the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants. Coranderrk is a collaboration between leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, researchers, education experts and community members. The production aims to encourage a shared understanding of the past between Aboriginal and nonAboriginal people. Coranderrk is marching into Frankston Arts Centre on Saturday, May 20, at 7.30pm. Mornington Peninsula Magazine spoke with the owners of two Peninsula olive groves who have signed up to the MPP brand and have earned the right to use the MPP Certified Trade Mark. We spoke with Penny Hart from Hart’s Farm in Shoreham and Sui Tham from Cape Schanck Olive Estate. Hart’s Farm was one of the first businesses to apply for MPP accreditation. Owner Penny explains: “We thought it was a great idea,” she said. “People who buy a product with that logo, they know there’s very clear certification that it’s from the Peninsula.”

Authentic Italian pasta. There’s nothing like it. We’re talking about melt-in-yourmouth gnocchi, rich Napoli sauce and delicate seafood. When Bronx Napoli Pizzeria 1999 in Mornington invited Mornington Peninsula Magazine’s editorial team to sample their pasta dishes, we couldn’t resist. The experience proved why this relative new kid on the block (Bronx Napoli Pizzeria 1999 opened in November) is earning a reputation as one of the places in Mornington to dine if you want an authentic pizza and pasta experience with ‘no fuss’ and ‘no pretention’. Head Chef Alessandro (Alex) D’Auria makes his pasta fresh every MAY 2017 (66)

day and he promises an experience true to the regional cuisine. It’s a $25 trip to Naples. The first of the three pasta dishes was the Gnocchi Sorrento (fresh Napoli sauce topped with melted buffalo milk mozzarella and basil - Campania region). Alex makes his gnocchi by hand daily and he slow roasts his Napoli sauce for 4-5 hours. The result is a chunky, melt-in-yourmouth dish that will have you scraping the sauce from the bottom of the plate after the gnocchi is devoured. “With my pasta, we take great care,” Alex explains. “It’s a delicate process.” Next is the Fregola (small roasted semolina pebbles tossed with Napoli, chili, vongole, mussels, prawns, calamari, fresh fish, white wine and garlic - Sardinia region). It’s a surprisingly spicy, yet balanced dish packed full of seafood and flavours. The delicate fregola pasta is a taste sensation unlike any other pasta and it’s one Alex sources directly from Sardinia. If you love mushrooms, the Pappardelle (Ragu Di Funghi)

(sautéed porchini and button mushrooms infused with truffle oil) has to be experienced. This is an ideal winter dish with an earthy flavour and tender ribbons of Pappardelle, plenty of it! Enjoy it with a glass of wine and good company. The pasta experience won us over and there’s a wonderful selection of wines to accompany your meal (including on-tap wine imported from the great wine regions of Italy). Buon Appetito. The inaugural MY Mount Eliza Run and Fun Festival 2017 kicked off for a good cause on Sunday, March 26, at Emil Madsen Reserve. More than 1000 people attended and 680 people registered for the 5km and 10km trail run/walk. Founder Geoff Nyssen described it as an incredible success. “We smashed our fundraising target, raising a total profit of $30,050! For context, these funds are sufficient to employ a parttime nurse for one year to provide direct information and support services to Myeloma patients, carers and their families.” “It was an incredible success as we brought to life our vision to create an event that thrived on community spirit and celebrated the importance of family and friends having fun together. We empowered each other to enjoy the 10km and 5km trail run/walk events and ultimately we promoted health and wellness while raising much-needed funds for a very important cause - Myeloma Australia.”

It also includes some wonderful stories of the people who lived and built their houses there and the Griffins themselves! Mornington Peninsula Shire adopted a Conservation Management Plan for the Ranelagh Estate in Mount Eliza in 2009. The plan aims to assist residents, statutory authorities, land owners and managers in the conservation of this important heritage place. Members of the community were welcomed to a meet the author talk at the Mornington Library in March to hear more about the Ranelagh Estate in our very own Mount Eliza.

And here comes the cool weather. Those nice long days seem long gone now. But on the upside, we get to harvest and store the end of our warm season crops and sow some of our favourites. The enjoyable month of May. Pumpkins and garlic. Harvesting your pumpkin crop is a very rewarding and productive time. If harvested carefully, cured and stored well, they can last you through close to next years harvest. Keep a good length of stalk, let them sit in part sun for a day or two and store them dry in a cool shady space for the winter - not in the warmth of the house. You will want to protect them from the rodents also. Once you’ve harvested and stored the pumpkins, grab your left over garlic from last year and get planting. It’s one of the most productive hours you can have, each clove multiplying beautifully by around 10 by the time you harvest in 6-8 months. And with little or Bay Linen Logo_CMYK.pdf

no extra attention other than irrigation, this ritual will provide you with garlic for a year (depending on the type and varieties you choose to grow). Another one of the favourite crops to get in now is your broad beans. Sow heaps. you can never have enough bags of frozen broadies to see you through the year. Easy to grow, very productive and delicious. But don’t forget the other staples for this time of year. Already we can have our first plantings of broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower in and growing strong and preparing for another round to plant now. Peas and spring onions, dark leafy greens and salad greens can all be planted continually for regular daily harvests. May is a good month to achieve a whole lot in the garden. It’s still warm enough on those sunny days to enjoying getting in to do a bit of cleanup after a productive warm season. All spent crops can be dragged from the garden beds now and composted or otherwise disposed of. Berries, deciduous climbers and deciduous fruit trees can all get some of your attention and receive a tidy up both within the

canopy and below the plant. A bit of a feed and re-mulch of your fruiting plants will send them into dormancy happy. And while you have easier access to these plants you might as well check the irrigation system to make sure it is all functioning properly. We like to also use this time of year to begin planning for the following Spring. This may be organising where to add more vegetable beds, or additional fruit tree plantings, or perhaps clearing an area for somewhere to sit within the garden. Once the cold weather sets in we can be reluctant to get outside to prepare for the following season, and then before we know it Spring is on our door step and we scramble to get ready. It’s much easier to begin your planning and preparing early.

HERE’S WHY DUCT CLEANING IS IMPORTANT Consumers are often sceptical about duct cleaning. They are often unsure as to what duct cleaning entails and how often it’s needed. “If you are considering cleaning your ducted heating system it is important to realise that the entire system needs to be cleaned, not just the ducts.” In most cases up to 90 per cent of the dust (and therefore dust mites, pollens, germs and fungi) that clog up your system are located in the air return ducting and heater interior, only 10 per cent is in the outlet ducts. The dust and germs stored here breed and multiply continuously, even when the system is not in use. These contaminants lay ready and waiting for you to turn the system on, allowing them to blow around your home for you and your family to breathe in. Full System Cleaning removes this build up and ensures your system delivers clean healthy air into your home. A full system clean system also allows air to flow unrestricted, ensuring your system runs more efficiently.

The Full System Duct Clean Process Step 1: Return Air Duct Cleaned: Removes built up dust and contaminants from the return air duct line. Takes around 45 minutes to complete. Step 2: Cleaning of Heater Interior: Removes ducts and contaminants from lining inside the heater, the fan blades and motor and the heat exchanger. Also takes around 45 minutes. Step 3: All Duct Lines Are Cleaned and Checked: Removes contaminants, dust and debris from the duct lines that run from the heat to each individual outlet. About 5 minutes per outlet. Step 4: Sanitising with Bactigas, Natural Teatree Disinfectant: This sanitises your entire ducted heating system. Bactigas is distilled from the Australian teatree plant, and is a natural antiseptic. Provided your system is cleaned correctly, three years is a suitable time frame for cleaning, more often if your household contains people with severe dust allergies.
