Good Times for a Good Cause BY JANE HONE

It was a sunny 26 degrees as over eighty passengers boarded a Searoads ferry for a special High Tea on the High Seas on Sunday March 22. The event, organised by Nepean Friends of Hospice, raised important funds for Peninsula Home Hospice. Guests of all ages enjoyed an incredible spread and a fun atmosphere, with dolphin sightings and one guest celebrating her 81st birthday! There were shouts of ‘me!’ from lucky prize-winners during the raffle, which raised a further $447 for PHH. Nepean Friends of Hospice is a fundraising auxiliary to PHH, an organisation that provides palliative care to the peninsula community with the aim of making those with serious illnesses as comfortable and dignified as possible. PHH offers a range of free services to clients and their families, from medical consultancy to art therapy to spiritual care. In 2013-2014, PHH cared for over 800 clients. Friends of Hospice president, Marilyn Cunnington, says that PHH is essentially there to assist ‘anyone who has a need’. Around a third of PHH’s funding comes from external sources, which is where Friends of Hospice comes in. With a focus on food and fun, fundraising events such as High Tea on the High Seas create an opportunity for people to have fun while giving to a good cause. Friends of Hospice would like to thank the Bendigo Bank in particular for its support during the event. High Tea on the High Seas is the first of a series of fabulous fundraising events being hosted by Friends of Hospice this year. Battle not over yet for

Maryrose By Kristy Martin

There’s a deer with arthritis named Opal. A pair of emus known as Mr and Mrs Oz. Dozens of chatty birds, cheeky swans and hungry wallabies. And a turkey saved from becoming Christmas dinner. Maryrose Kersting has over 200 animals on her Balnarring property and there is certainly never a dull moment. But with all these animals comes a hefty $256 weekly food bill. For Maryrose, a pensioner aged in her 70s, it is difficult to come up with that sort of cash. Maryrose made national headlines

(6

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

back in October after the bank foreclosed on the property and an anonymous benefactor bought her 10 acre wildlife sanctuary at auction then returned it to her. Maryrose’s husband Fred passed away several years ago and the family printing business later ceased operation, so it became difficult for her to cope financially. “I tried to get a job but nobody will hire me at my age,” says Maryrose. Maryrose describes the actions of the man who bought the property as ‘a miracle’. He says she is free to live there for the rest of her life – and yet she has never even met him. “It was just magic, no it was a miracle,” she says. “I can’t believe there are people out there like that.”

Dozens of people donated money to Maryrose’s cause and to this day she has no shortage of volunteers who come and help out at the sanctuary, which she is incredibly grateful for. She is also well supported by the Red Hill Bakery. However, the cost of 20 kilograms of sweet potatoes, carrots, wheat, barley and pellets each week is taking its toll. Maryrose hopes she can continue to afford to feed her animals, which include peacocks, guineafowl and several brush-tailed bettongs, a small and endangered marsupial. If you are able to donate money or grain to assist Maryrose’s plight, please contact Nigel Williamson from Nigel’s Animal Rescue on 0427 533 083.

First Impressions Last written by Andrew Van De Beek illumin8 partners

The saying goes “Your first impressions is the last impression”. Think back to a time when you’ve been utterly disappointed in a service. It may have been a less than desirable experience at a cafe or restaurant, or a business transaction that left a bitter taste in your mouth. Often negative experiences can be more memorable than the positive ones, for all of the wrong reasons. While following up on some information for a client of mine recently, I entered a business premises and was met with some of the worst customer service I have ever been subject to. I walked away from the experience feeling dissatisfied, knowing that with even just a small amount of attention to detail, positive attitude and professionalism, my encounter with this company could have been completely different. Customers come first. It is a simple rule, but one that rings true to ensure that clients feel valued and an integral part of your business. Without customers, businesses are nothing. Now I’m not saying that we are perfect in this area, or that we get it right every time, but at our practice, we aim to provide a memorable experience for all of the right reasons: • Help clients with their personal administration needs; • Offer cafe bought coffees for clients when they first arrive; • Give them a birthday text or phone call; • Be available to talk casually (without charging them as others may); • Introduce new clients to the whole team so that everyone knows the client on a first name basis, and vice versa; • Be available outside normal office hours when a client calls our mobile or sends an email; • Ensure our decor is welcoming and comfortable; • Aim for quick replies (often instantly) to client emails so they are sure that we are onto their queries; • Ensure the clients best interest is the driving factor for all services we provide. We find that this approach works for us in building stronger client relationships. What is it that you could do to show your clients that they matter to you?

Book unites motherless mums By Kristy Martin

When Leigh Van Der Horst lost her mother to cancer in 2008, she suddenly found herself without a best friend and her go-to person for motherly guidance. Trying to navigate her way through the overwhelming grief while at the same time raising four young boys proved a challenge Leigh wasn’t sure she could overcome. “We were best friends,” Leigh says of her mother, Joanne. “I would always go to her for reassurance, you know, like three phone calls a day just for parenting advice and support.” Joanne, described by Leigh as a ‘fiercely independent woman’, was initially diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2005 and underwent chemotherapy and surgery. The cancer returned in 2006 and was so aggressive that doctors gave Joanne just three months to live. “At that stage, I had a one-year-old, a three-year-old and a five-year-old, and a hard-working husband,” says Leigh, who lives in Mount Martha. “It was a massive shock trying to deal with (the prognosis). “I remember I asked her ‘Why you?’ and she said, ‘Why not me?’” It was August 2008 when Joanne passed away, and after months of trying to numb herself with alcohol, Leigh realised she needed to pull herself together for the sake of her family. “Up to that point, I was just going through the motions. You just find a way to way to exist because you have to.” Blogging about her personal

experience led strangers, other ‘motherless mums’, to reach out to Leigh and offer comfort through solidarity. “My husband was a great support, but I just wanted to know I wasn’t the only mum in her 30s who had lost her mother. “I needed someone I could say ‘Oh it’s happened to you, let’s talk’. “The blog made me realise there were so many other people out there in this position.” This gave Leigh the idea to write a book, a way to connect the world’s motherless mums together. Fast-forward to today and Leigh’s book ‘Without My Mum’ has come to fruition. Self-published and being sold online and in peninsula bookstores, it has already sold more than 750 copies worldwide. The book not only documents Leigh’s heartbreaking journey, it also features coping mechanisms from other motherless mums, plus

contributions from celebrities like Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Megan Gale, Lisa Wilkinson and Jools (aka Mrs Jamie) Oliver, who Leigh developed a friendship with after they connected through social media. While it is still early days, Leigh couldn’t be prouder of her achievement. “It’s such a legacy to Mum. “It’s an emotional read,” Leigh says, but it is also about overcoming tragedy. “If you take the lessons (you are given) and learn from them, you realise life can be amazing.” Without My Mum can be purchased online through www.vividpublishing. com.au or at Farrell’s Bookshop in Mornington and Mt Martha LPO. out for local FOLKLAW Looking koalas since 1994 By Penny Ivison

While the jury is still out on whether or not we should be eating our national emblem the kangaroo, the notion of eating a koala is a different story entirely. Koalas occupy the space in our collective mind reserved for cute kittens, puppies and babies. And just like these innocent creatures, right now the koala needs our help and protection. Nationwide, the koala is listed as vulnerable to extinction with populations in some

areas classified as endangered. This, of course, has nothing to do with people eating koalas (thankfully) and everything to do with their dwindling habitat. Where there are no native trees, there are obviously no koalas. Local volunteer organisation FOLKLAW (Friends of Local Koalas, Land and Wildlife) have been quietly working behind the scenes to help rectify this for the past 20 years. In that time they have developed and revegetated the Somers Koala Reserve with indigenous trees and plants. They also donate indigenous plants to various community organisations, aiming to improve the ratio of native plants to introduced species in the area. The current figures are pretty dire with the peninsula having less than 10 per cent of its original native vegetation. Injured wildlife is also a regular occurrence and FOLKLAW support our local volunteer wildlife carers through building animal

hospitals and possum boxes to house animals as they rehabilitate. Despite all this, FOLKLAW treasure Peter Cooper has noticed a sharp decline in koala numbers in the past five years, saying, “There are hardly any around anymore.” This is due to a range of factors including urbanisation and disease outbreaks. So what can we do to help? FOLKLAW suggests driving slowly at night and looking out for koalas and other

wildlife. If you find or injure wildlife while driving, call Wildlife Victoria, your local vet or a FOLKLAW volunteer carer (details on their website). Also ensure your dogs are kept in a restrained area, especially at night. Becoming a FOLKLAW member is just $10 per year and they hold monthly working bees if you would like to become physically involved. For full details go to www.folklaw. org.au

Keep your eyes peeled for the Aussie Swellshark By Scott Grimster

The Australian Swellshark or Draughtboard shark (Cephaloscyllium laticeps) is a species of catshark endemic to southern Australia. This bottomdwelling species can be found on the continental shelf down to a depth of 220 m (720 ft). Usually measuring one metre, or three feet, long, it is a stout-bodied, broad-headed shark with a short tail and a first dorsal fin much larger than the second. It can be identified by its variegated dorsal colouration of brown or grey patches and numerous spots. Australian Swellsharks are mainly nocturnal, with most individuals remaining within the same local area throughout the year. They feed on small crustaceans, cephalopods, and fishes. When threatened, they respond by rapidly taking in water or air to inflate the body, hence the name “swellshark”. This shark is oviparous and females lay pairs of distinctively ridged egg capsules at 20–30 day intervals. The eggs hatch after 11–12 APRIL 2015 (42)

months. Harmless and of little commercial interest, many Australian swellsharks are caught incidentally in gillnets and bottom trawls but usually survive to be released because of their extreme hardiness. The Australian Swellshark is a generally sluggish swimmer that is more active at night. During the day, it is often found resting singly or in groups under ledges or inside caves. Tracking studies have shown that some individuals are continuously active for months at a time, while others alternate activity with periods of stationary rest lasting up to five days. This extremely hardy species can survive for more than a day out of water. One of the higher-level predators within its ecosystem, the Australian Swellshark feeds on crustaceans (particularly crabs and rock lobsters), cephalopods (including squid and octopus), and small fishes. Even large-sized prey tends to be swallowed whole; the long periods of rest exhibited by some sharks may relate to digestion. LEST WE FORGET Anzac Day celebrations will be extra special this year, with the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings coming up on April 25. For Mt Eliza resident and Kokoda veteran Lionel Smith, Anzac Day is always a poignant reminder of his fallen comrades. It brings back memories of his days in the Papua New Guinean jungle during World War 2, of being shot at by the Japanese and witnessing friends die by his side. “Whenever Anzac Day comes around, you tend to think of those boys,” says Mr Smith, who at almost 96 knows he is one of the lucky ones. “I was blessed. I don’t know why I’m still here.” Mr Smith was in the Second 14th Battalion and, like many others, lied about his age so he could enlist without his parents’ permission. “For many young men in the late 1930s, to join the army and fight for our king and country, to travel overseas to become a soldier had an element of mystique and sense of adventure. “The Second 14th trained at Puckapunyal before sailing on the Aquitania to Africa, where we became a seasoned

and disciplined battalion fighting against the Vichy French in Palestine and Syria up through Lebanon. “There were so many places of history, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Haifa, Cairo, Beirut, Tripoli, Egypt and Palestine. “Our fighting was against the Vichy French and was out in the open, under pressure from machine guns, bombs and shelling. “When we were recalled to Australia we embarked through Yemen via the Sinai Desert for the south west pacific via Colombo to Java. “This was the first step towards our ultimate destination of Papua New Guinea.” Australia declared war on Japan on December 9, 1941. “Each of us in the Second 14th at this stage were welltrained, hardened and physically fit young men aged from their late teens into their early twenties,” explains Mr Smith. “(But) the jungles of Papua New Guinea were a far cry from the desert plains and stony hills of the Middle East. continues next page

“We weren’t used to carrying 70 pound packs, plunging down mountainsides and dense forest and being dumped on with drumming afternoon rains each day.” After the war, Mr Smith’s weight had plummeted from 76 kilos to 32 but he managed to “settle back into normal living”, got married to his wife Greta and had two children, David and Heather. He still lives in the Mt Eliza house built on land he and Greta purchased in 1954. They have been together for 67 years and now have two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr Smith used to march in the Mornington Anzac Day parade with his grandson Sam, but hasn’t done this for several years due to his age. These days he spends up to five hours each day in his garden at home, a relaxing pastime that takes him miles away from the jungles of Kokoda. Anzac Day is on Saturday April 25 and a number of events will be held across the peninsula. For details, visit the Mornington Peninsula Shire website.

MIKAELA CROWNED MISS WESTERN PORT By Kristy Martin

Newly crowned Miss Western Port, Mikaela Fowler, says she hopes to make positive changes through community and charity work. Mikaela beat out 10 others to win the coveted crown at the Western Port Festival back in February, which fast-tracked her straight into the Miss Galaxy Australia 2015 national finals on the Gold Coast. Mikaela, 19, is a graphic design student at RMIT who has lived in Somerville her whole life. She was sponsored by Saya Beaute Bar, owned by her sister and mother, and her gowns were provided by Somerville boutique Fashion by Bronwyn. Mikaela won over $2000 worth of prizes and will now have an exciting (and busy!) 12 month reign serving the community and providing a fresh outlook and new ideas to the Western Port Festival Committee. “It was such a good experience and I was very surprised to win,” Mikaela says. “I’ve grown up doing dancing and cheerleading so I had some experience being onstage, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t scared! “Besides self confidence, the main thing I learnt was how important it is to stand up for what I believe in and what’s right, rather than simply saying things to please other people.”

Mikaela Fowler is the new Miss Western Port. Photo by David Thompson from Tacitic Photography.

Fundraising for the Cancer Council and helping to raise cash for a wheelchair for Rosebud local Alysia Kaiser, “Mikaela wowed the judges right from the start,” says pageant director Jessica Martini. She also supported her fellow contestants by attending the other girls’ fundraising events. “Mikaela has proven to be a graceful and humble young lady, has thanked all our sponsors who provided prizes to her without being asked and gave a beautiful winner’s speech after she was crowned - a true role model to our other contestants and the community,” said Ms Martini. Mikaela hopes to have a voice when it comes to community planning and is also keen to promote the local area. The Miss Western Port runners up were Lily WarrenVenturin, Stephanie McRoe, Alicia Jackson and Stephanie Long. Applications for Miss Western Port 2016 will be open in June. Follow ‘Miss Western Port Pageant’ on Facebook for announcements and to watch Mikaela’s journey.

Mentoring the residents on their Active Health journey has prompted Debra to undertake a more structured approach to her own health and fitness, resulting in weight loss in increased vitality. “I felt that it was important for me to ‘practise what I was preaching’,” says Deb. “Interestingly, when residents start to feel the benefits of adopting Active Health strategies, they in turn mentor others in the village.” One Beleura Village resident, newly diagnosed with Diabetes type 2, found the

support of other diabetics within the village invaluable. “The Active Health Centre nurses are a wonderful resource; they really helped with the transition period. “I feel so lucky to have doctors and physiotherapists regularly visit the village, there is no need to drive, and they are only a short walk or a phone call away for advice,” she says. “Other residents are who are diabetic also have been enormously helpful with their tips and support. “That is one of the wonderful things about living in a village. There is always someone that has walked the same road.” Deb agrees that some individuals show

more dramatic improvement than others. For those who have enjoyed lifelong activity, there are a range of choices. Residents can join the gym or aqua class, and these facilities can be accessed at any time for private use. “Education is key to maintaining good health,” Deb says. “We offer group and individual coaching on everything from chronic health condition management to nutrition and meditation. “Residents can also try new activities like tai chi and lawn bowls – these all help keep us engaged, active and fulfilled.” Call today to start planning for your active and healthy retirement 1800 633 126.

Marketing 4 Restaurants specialises in restaurant websites, customised marketing campaigns and supplies the industry with a free online ordering and booking system, minus the expensive price tag. Most competitors typically charge fees per seat and up to 10 per cent of each online order. Founder and chief executive James Eling says in a nutshell Marketing 4 Restaurants provides the industry with a series of online tools to attract food lovers and turns them into repeat customers. “We know the average profit margin for a restaurant owner is less than 3 per cent and many more are working 60 to 80 hours a week in their business,” he said. “So most restaurateurs only ever find the time to work in their business instead of focusing on attracting new customers, and funding is often tight. “We work with them to create buzz around their venue,

Get ready to be inspired when you visit the upcoming Western Port Craft Fest, which showcases some amazing creations by artistic peninsula locals. Now in its fourth year, this popular event returns to the Hastings Uniting Church Hall on Saturday April 18. A variety of local crafts will be on display, including quilting, spinning and weaving, woodturning, mosaics, rug making and paper-making. There will also be a Crafty Men’s Tent, model railway building and more! A new idea being tried this year is the havea-go area where three crafts – spinning and weaving, rughooking and cardmaking will be set up for visitors to try their hand throughout the day. Get in and give it a go! Last year’s most popular spot was the knitting corner, which has now been

expanded to allow more people clever with knitting needles and crochet hooks to sit and natter, crochet or knit and enjoy a cuppa. Charity knitters are most welcome - last year’s event featured people from KoGo (Knit one, Give one) and also people who knitted penguin jumpers for the Penguin Foundation on Phillip Island. Talks on a variety of crafts will be given at hourly intervals in the quieter area of the chapel, and children are not forgotten with a designated craft area set up for them too. Light refreshments of tea, coffee and delicious sandwiches, cakes and slices will be available through the day. Entry cost is $4 for adults and $2 for schoolaged children. Profits go to the continued restoration of the Hastings historic chapel. Enquiries to wpcraftfest@gmail.com, visit the Facebook page ‘Western Port Craft Fest’ or phone 5979 1237.

A MUDDY GOOD TIME Calling all adventurers, obstacle enthusiasts, mudpie makers and anyone who loves getting their hands dirty - Mud Up Day is coming! A new event put together by The Ideas Library, Mud Up Day will be held on Saturday April 18 at the Peninsula Obstacle Racing Course on Tyabb Road, Moorooduc. Fun for the whole family, Mud Up Day will include runs for thrill seekers who love the obstacles, as well as dedicated children’s runs for those who simply can’t pass up a good mud puddle! This year’s event is proudly sponsored by Tom-Boi, a women’s clothing brand that encourages women to embrace their inner tomboy. Tickets are available at early bird rates from $50 for adults and $30 for children 13 and under. Head to www.mudupday.com.au or find Mud Up Day on Facebook for more details.

Bonding for Business Women Local women’s networking group Soar Collective is inviting you to join their fold. The Soar Collective After Dark event is being held on Thursday May 21 at Lilo Café in Mornington. This not-to-be-missed event features special guest speaker, Luz Restrepo from SisterWorks. SisterWorks enables the most vulnerable asylum-seeker, refugee and migrant women (‘Sisters’) to work towards financial independence by helping them develop the skills they need to settle happily into Australian society. Guests have the opportunity to meet like-minded women and make genuine connections while enjoying delicious canapés and a glass of wine. Soar Collective steers away from the typical offer of filter coffee, mini Danishes and a torrent of repetitive sales pitches, they’re focused on building a community of women who by sharing their successes and failures, can learn from and empower each other. Jess Jones from Soar encourages her attendees to have a ‘no bull approach’ when introducing themselves to other women. She says, “It’s ok to say ‘I’ve had a really bad day’ or ‘Sales aren’t good at the moment and I don’t know how to fix it’.” The need for authenticity is imperative at the Soar Collective events, as the founder explains, “You need to

bust through whatever rubbish is holding you back from being your best self.” A portion of After Dark ticket sales is donated to Australian National Committee for UN Women - the United Nations

Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. Limited tickets available, so get in quick. www. soarcollective.com/eventsandworkshops

Empowering women Victorian health minister Jill Hennessy stopped in at Toorak College last month to speak to the students about International Women’s Day. Held on March 8 every year, IWD celebrates women’s economic, political, and social achievements across the globe. Ms Hennessy met with Toorak College principal Helen Carmody, deputy principal Lois Dwyer, head girl Sinead Waterson and deputy head girl Emma Wiggins at the college before addressing the students during a special assembly. “It is important for women to be strong and independent and it is particularly important for young women to support each other on the journey of life,” the minister said. She encouraged the girls to develop a strong sense of self-esteem and personal resilience and to strive to take on leadership roles in their lifetimes.

A Kite to Behold - Rosebud Foreshore By Jane Hone

2,500 years after they were first invented, kite experts and amateurs alike gathered on Rosebud foreshore to have a go at this ancient pastime for the 11th Rosebud Kite Festival. The weather on Labour Day weekend was perfect, with just the right amounts of sunshine and wind to keep everyone and their kites happy and entertained.

The foreshore sky was made rainbow by a dazzling array of kites in all shapes and sizes. Festival-goers were treated to an amazing display of world-famous kites (such as Toothless from ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, Puff, the red dragon and Pegasus, the white horse), as well as carnival rides, food stalls, live music, stand-up paddle boarding and plenty more. Once again, the Rosebud Kite Festival proved to be a unique, fun-filled family day out.

Swimming success for kids Kings Swim School is leading the charge when it comes to teaching children how to be safe, confident and skilled in and around water. Swimming is a vital life skill that every child should be introduced to from an early age, as in Australia drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under five. Kings has been a trusted name for more than 25 years, teaching tens of thousands of kids to swim using highly qualified instructors and sound scientific learning techniques. They have specialist programs for infants through to competitive swimmers, focusing on skill development and technique, with group and private lessons available. The staff are passionate about teaching and 100% dedicated to developing life skills in every child, but they also understand that every child is unique and therefore tailor programs to meet individual needs. King Swim School staff take pride in providing a complete swimming and water safety education program. Kings also provides a learning guarantee that will help ensure your child progresses through their program on a regular basis. If your child is still at the same level after 32 regularly attended swim lessons, you will receive a second lesson each week free of charge until your child progresses to the next level. Signing up with Kings is easy and hassle free, as there

are no contracts and there are great benefits like family discounts and a loyalty rewards program. All teachers are extensively trained by Kings Master Trainers. They undertake extensive ongoing professional development and they all teach the same way, ensuring a standardised program. Who’ll Put the Bins Out?

Holidaying on the Mornington Peninsula has been a mainstay of this business owner’s life. As a third generation stakeholder in the familyowned holiday house, Jenna Doyle, and her husband, Brendan have long realised the enjoyment that a holiday house brings to families and friends.

It also brings responsibilities. One pesky problem of the weekend away has always been ‘Who will put the bins out?’ When you’re back home, or back at work, remembering your fun weekend, the weekly bin task is long forgotten. And who wants to spend their precious weekend away mowing a lawn? Bring on Bin Away Property Care who can perform casual or regular lawn mowing services, and undertake the simple task of placing bins for kerbside collection, and returning them back to your holiday property. Bin Away Property Care appreciates the need for holiday home owners to keep their house presentable, well-kept and with a lived-in appearance. With 15 years of business ownership

experience, managing a landscape design, construction and garden maintenance business, (through south-east and eastern suburbs of Melbourne), Jenna and Brendan Doyle are well equipped to manage your holiday property’s basic, external property care services. Whilst recognising that bin placement is an easy task, the attraction of Bin Away Property Care to Jenna and Brendan is greater than the work task. “We feel like we have built up a good range of skills in managing a larger landscape business for many years. Most importantly, we recognise the importance of building trust with our clients, and keeping communication lines open. As our business grows, we will value personal integrity, communication and attention to property detail in developing relationships with the

right additional staff,” says Jenna. At this time, Jenna’s newly retired father, Jim, is keen to assist the growing business through bin placements. MAGNETIC WATER Bottled at the Source Clean water is a necessity for healthy living, however, locating this commodity can be challenging. Seemingly clean tap water is often infested with chlorine, harmful bacteria and unwanted chemicals and contaminates.

“Magnetic Water” is how pure water should be. Magnetic Water’s voyage takes it through layers of basalt and scoria rock to a vast underground aquifer deep inside Mt Warrenhelp, an extinct volcano near Ballarat in Victoria. During this filtration process, our water naturally absorbs essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and silica, naturally infusing it into the water. From there it is passed through our unique chemical free proprietary magnetic fluid processor, further purifying and restoring its natural health enhancing properties. Magnetic Water is naturally alkaline, which means our waters pH is in a basic state ranging from 7.6 to 8.1. The reason our water is naturally alkaline is because our rare and unique underground spring sources are naturally alkaline. The mineral properties of our water are not artificially manipulated since we add nothing and remove nothing from our water. This ensures Magnetic Water remains in its pure and pristine state bringing you only the best naturally alkaline water there is.

Change your water and change your life! Magnetic Water P: (03) 9786 0099 A: 2-3/19 Sir Laurence Dve, Seaford E: info@magnetic-water.net

We all know that staying hydrated plays a crucial role in maintaining overall wellness, but did you know that a key to maintaining healthy cells is creating an alkaline environment? Electrolytes are the key to hydration and are vital to physiological function and athletic performance. Electrolytes act as chemical messengers in the body carrying electrical impulses from the nerves, which control all tissue function and movement. Having imbalanced levels of electrolytes are detrimental to performance and health. Common electrolytes are calcium, magnesium, and potassium, all of which are naturally occurring in Magnetic Water. Magnetic Water has an alkalinity of 140mg/L–190 mg/L. Alkaline water acts as an antioxidant and detoxifies your body to remove normal acidic waste products, accumulated daily, which can lead to more serious health conditions. Magnetic Water is fluoride and chlorine free and also contains silica, which is sometimes referred to as a ‘natural’ botox! The recommended daily intake of silica for adults is 20 to 50mg. Magnetic Water contains 57mg of silica per litre, making it the highest known silica level of any bottled water known in the world.

Enjoy beautiful choral music With over 1200 singers participating in five concerts, the Mornington Peninsula Choral Festival is a unique and exciting celebration of local choral singing. Now in its ninth year, the festival will be held throughout May at Toorak College in Mount Eliza. The Mornington Peninsula Choral Festival first came to fruition in 2006 when a small group of local music teachers and choral directors gathered to discuss the possibility of a choral festival for local choirs. The festival was launched on a beautiful

Two convenient locations Mount Eliza and Rosebud At Hanks Orthodontics, we understand you, and that your time is precious. We pride ourselves in making orthodontic treatment more convenient and accessible to patients, whether you have work or school commitments. We have two convenient locations in Rosebud and Mount Eliza. Both are linked to our network, which enables you to be seen in either location – whichever is more suitable at the time. We have also adjusted our opening hours to be more helpful. Open before school, over the the lunch hour and after school, we will try to accommodate you as best we can to minimise absence from your studies or from work. We also use modern braces and archwires that allow us to have slightly longer periods between adjustment appointments. This also means less time off school or work.

No. You do not need a referral from your dentist. However, in saying that, we believe you will receive the best dental and orthodontic management when we work closely with your dentist. This team approach is what we strive to achieve for your benefit and so we will keep your dentist informed at all stages of your orthodontic assessment and treatment.

So what is orthodontics? Dentistry has many branches and specialities. Orthodontics is the speciality that treats abnormalities of the bite and jaws in children and adults. Improvements in the appearance of the teeth, smile and face are among the cosmetic benefits derived from orthodontic treatment. An orthodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. A malocclusion is a technical term for crooked, crowded, spaced or misaligned teeth, which do not fit properly. It can exist without immediate or painful symptoms and a lot of people tend to adapt to the improper relationship between the jaws and the teeth. It is important to realise that even if you or your child don’t have symptoms, a specialist orthodontic check-up might be helpful to correct undetected problems which may worsen over time.

Fat? Exhausted? Sex is the last thing you want?

ARE YOUR HORMONES MAKING YOU

Bloated? Irritable?

These are some of the symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Research shows us that over 40% of Australian women have an undiagnosed, underactive thyroid gland. Which means no matter how many hours you exercise or cut out carbs you can’t lose that spare tyre around the middle. Blood test results from your doctor may not pick this up. If you think you may be one of these women or men you deserve to feel fantastic every day so don’t put off getting tested with the latest technology from America.

FREE

THYROID SCREEN (Usually $140) Ends April 31st

Is your diet being sabotaged by undetected hormone imbalance?

If you don’t feel this way, you may have a hormonal imbalance.

Did you know that having an underactive thyroid contributes to 40% of people not being able to lose the fat? In some cases you can have an underactive thyroid even when your standard thyroid blood tests are normal. Imagine waking up each morning and bouncing out of bed after a great night sleep, happy and energised for the day. As you pass the mirror, you admire your body. People ask, what is your secret?

WHAT DOES YOUR THYROID DO FOR YOU? The thyroid gland controls your body’s ability to burn calories, produce energy, have mental clarity and perform at your best. When it is under-functioning, no matter how many calories you cut or extra exercise you do, it is impossible to shed those extra kilos.

STANDARD BLOOD TESTING Blood tests (TSH) may not tell the whole story. Detecting how much thyroid hormone is in your bloodstream, does not identify what is working in your tissues. So, if you do have a problem it may not be picked up by your doctor.

NEW TESTING AVAILABLE American thyroid specialists, Dr Konrad Kail and Dr Daryl Turner, have developed a quick, non-invasive medical thyroid screening test, which has been used by integrative US doctors for the past eight years to accurately diagnose and treat thyroid issues. Once the thyroid is balanced with nutrients and medication you can easily lose weight, increase your energy and feel happier in yourself. So if you suspect your thyroid isn’t working quite right, head along and visit Julie at Feeling Great for a FREE test. You deserve to feel fantastic every day! RELAX, HEAL & BEAUTIFY Suriya Lotus Spa is Mornington’s premier luxury spa where the therapies are based on the ancient Thai and Aryurvedic Healing Principles. In the authentic Thai atmosphere of the spa, tranquillity and healing are the two most important things. On entering the spa, you are greeted with warm hospitality and the Thai ‘smile’ from the staff, beautifully dressed in authentic Thai outfits. You cannot help but feel relaxed and at ease as you browse through the many luxurious treatments on the menu. Seated in the comfortable large chairs, your feet are gently bathed and massaged in a healing warm bath of mountain salt and rose petal while you sip on a heavenly cup of Thai lemongrass or ginger tea. You are then ushered into your treatment room and relax to the distant sounds of Thai music on the comfortable massage bed. The aromatic organic massage oils are prepared individually for you and warmed gently to release their greatest benefit.

As the masseuse skilfully works her way along the shen (energy) lines of your tired and aching body, your muscles relax and rejuvenate releasing the blockages and toxins that have caused you pain and illness for so long. Your mind goes into a deeper state of relaxation, losing its anxiety and becomes blissful on the edge of conscious sleep. Suriya Lotus Spa has a variety of healing body and pampering beauty treatments, including traditional Thai massage, rejuvenating organic body scrubs and the famous Thai facial therapy. Dry eyes disappear at Mt Eliza Optical There won’t be a dry eye left in the village when Mt Eliza Optical opens their Specialist Dry Eye Clinic in May. Along with the consulting optometrist and dry eye specialist Mark Besley, Marcus will be installing stateof-the-art equipment into his already up-to-date optometry practice. “Most dry eye treatments just manage the condition”, says Marcus. “We will be able to attack the underlying cause and really make a change. It’s very exciting!” Always ahead of trend, make sure you check out the new Fleye range of sculpted hypoallergenic resilient frames that are light, flexible and oh so good-looking while you’re in store. HAIR BE GONE Sue Verheyen says she is still constantly surprised by new clients coming into Advanced Skin & Laser - 5 Old Mornington Road and complaining about paying for IPL and laser treatments at other clinics that simply have not worked. “You only get what you pay for,” says Sue. “Medical equipment with ‘real power’ and delivery systems that

Ph (03) 9775 2922

are tried and tested in the medical field by upstanding laser manufacturers, established for many years, cost money.” The good news is, you do not have to come back each year for further treatments. Sue has been performing laser and IPL treatments for over 15 years and the truth is in the long-lasting results. Secondly, when it comes to skin rejuvenation only a first-grade skin technician should be trusted to not only perform your skin IPL treatments, but to be honest about how many treatments you require, and deliver the new regenerated and transformed skin you are looking for, taking away those years of sun damage. Even for major concerns like rosacea, clogged and oily skin, results are available to you. Phone 9787 7475 for an appointment at Advanced Skin & Laser – 5 Old Mornington Road, Mt Eliza.

ANTI-AGING & ASSOCIATES The team of highly trained, long term injectors Dr Juan Romero, Lara Boardman and Kay Nuttall have welcomed new nurse practitioner Carla Parker at 5 Old Mornington Road, Mt Eliza. Injectable procedures include most leading brands of injectable therapies, not only for the face, neck and hands, but headaches and sweating. Make sure it is the REAL PRODUCT, not an inferior, cheaper solution. Remember the law states ‘ALL PATIENTS MUST BE SCRIPTED’ so know who your medical practitioner is. “Ask the questions,” says Sue Verheyen.

your stars April Aries

Once again the overwhelming theme of your month is ‘me, myself and I’. This is your month to truly express your authentic self. All of the self words apply – self-development, self-aware, self-assurance and self-acceptance, to name a few. You may also receive gifts or a boost to your personal income.

Taurus

April heralds a time of reassessing what motivates you. It is time for you to reflect on your priorities. On the surface of things you are likely to be social. However, there is much stirring beneath the surface. You need to listen to your innermost urgings and plan to improve your health and happiness.

Leo

Sagittarius

Virgo

Capricorn

Big plans. Big picture. Big ideas. These are some of your themes for April. The planets are aligned happily with the Sign of Leo. Therefore this is a happy month during which you can move forward with some of your bigger schemes. You can have fun, relax and enjoy yourself. Seasons come and seasons go. April can be quite an intense month for Virgos. Perhaps you have been considering a serious life change, or perhaps you are about to receive news of something that changes your life direction. This month you can change how and where you invest your time and energy.

Gemini

Libra

Cancer

Once again you are urged to consider your lifestyle and make changes that favour your health and wellbeing. April is your month to focus on the little things in life, those daily habits that either annoy or uplift you. You may also help others to make these types of changes as you learn about them yourself.

Geminis are known as good communicators. Now it is time to excel in getting your message across. You are social, fun to be with and able to mingle in groups. You can chatter away, but what do you really want to communicate? If you have something that you want to share then spread the word. April sees you receive the recognition that you crave in your public life. You are ready to shine in your chosen profession, whether in the paid workforce or working as a fulltime parent. Recognition comes in the form of praise, awards, promotions and perhaps a boost to your personal income.

This is your month to date, mate and relate. Romance is in the air and could easily lead to something quite serious. If you are already in a committed relationship then it is time to spread your wings and rekindle the passion. If you are single then you may seek a new partner.

Scorpio

April sees inspiration and fun come your way. You may have connections with people from overseas or plan a trip to a foreign land. Cultural events may appeal this month. This is a lighter month than recent times. You have a reprieve from the serious planet Saturn. Creativity and fun are the flavour of the month. Like last month, April once again sees the main focus on paying some attention to your private life. The foundations of your life may require some fixing. This can mean that your home needs some repairs or improvements, that you work from home, or it could mean that your family needs your support.

Aquarius

Once again the planets are aligned positively for any commitment made publicly and for business and marriage partnerships. You are able to express your own wish for happiness and health, and to involve others in your pursuits. The focus is well and truly on your associations with a marriage or business partner.

Pisces

Money matters are likely to be highlighted this month. It is time for you to revisit your personal spending habits, to renew your budget commitments and to look at how much you earn. Your self-esteem plays a key role in this process. So boost your self-praise and your coffers at the same time.

By Tania Zaetta TV presenter, speaker, pilates instructor, natural beauty therapist, peninsula local and founder of the ‘6 Wk Trim & Tone’ online pilates weight loss program

By understanding a few of my healthy eating tips, you’ll be able to work towards your desired body and health goals no matter what your age, body shape or fitness level. Eating enough during the day is a simple guideline I’ve used for many years throughout my TV and media work and one that I learnt during my studies and research as a natural beauty therapy and pilates and barre pilates instructor.

Fuel your body more to help weigh less Your body needs a regular supply of nutrients each day in order for it to work properly. If you skip meals you will be more likely to make up for it by snacking on the wrong foods, or eating more than you should at the next meal. A healthier way to lose weight is to eat more small meals throughout the day, which is something I teach all the ladies on my ‘6 Wk Trim & Tone’ online pilates and weight loss program. Eating every 3-4 hrs including your snacks will help keep your metabolism cruising along nicely and your body fuelled for your daily activities.

Snacks Tip – 6-8 almonds or 1/2 apple spread with 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter make 2 nutritious and delicious healthy snacks to have between your main meals. Serve both with a green tea to help fill you up and aid digestion. There’s a variety of snacks to choose from with my online program, along with over 70 of my ‘fast, easy, family friendly’ personal recipes so you’ll never get bored and they guarantee to keep your taste buds satisfied too – you should give them a try, they all work great for me! Learn more about healthy eating, foods for weight loss, plus have access to all my meal plans, recipes and online pilates workouts with my ‘6 Wk Trim & Tone’ Online Pilates & Weightloss Program right now. Commencing 2015 Three Campuses, One Vision 2015 marks an incredibly important year for our school. This is the year where Woodleigh turns ‘The Big 4-O’ and the year where we welcome Penbank into our School. And Woodleigh is an awesome school. I say that from the bottom of my heart. There are people here to help you – staff and students alike, who will teach you so much more than you realise. Sure, you’ll learn Maths and Science and English in your time here, but the most amazing thing Woodleigh gives you over your time here is an identity. Woodleigh offers so many opportunities; you will learn to play a musical instrument, you can take up kayaking, debating, or sheep-showing. You have the opportunity to play so many different sports like handball, underwater hockey and floorball – you can even visit other countries like France, Germany, Indonesia, India, Cambodia, and Thailand. You can feed kangaroos, pat emus, or even do what

my friend does, and walk the school’s pet lizard ‘Snoozy’ at lunchtimes. There is so much you can do, but only one thing you have to do. You have to take every opportunity that comes your way, because every time you try something new, you will learn something new about yourself. You will meet people who have the same interests as you, and your world will grow to include people who have the same classes as you, people who give up a lunchtime to play in the same band as you, and people who always seem to be in your Camps and Activities. So take my advice; from your very first assembly, you’ll hear endless tales of Outward Bound, City Bound, Hattah, Mt Rothwell, Round Square and Ampilawatja. Take any opportunity you can and challenge yourself to try something new. Rebecca Sherrington – Year 12, 2015

The Mornington Football Netball Club is currently raising money for a new electronic scoreboard for the grounds, located on Main Street. At over 30 years old, the existing scoreboard has been described by the club as ‘slowly dying on the inside, with rotting wood, rusty rails, broken floors and tin numbers that fly off on a windy day!’ The electronic scoreboard will give the users of the park, Mornington Football, Mornington Cricket and Superules, the ability to showcase their scores in an instant to supporters and bring match scoring into the 21st century. And with extras like animations, player profiles and sponsorship banners these will help enhance the game day experience for all involved and attract valuable sponsorship money for the teams. Over $16,000 has been raised, but a further $11,000 is needed to complete the project. To donate to this valuable community project, head to https://teambus.com.au/projects/374/project-info/ or contact the Mornington Football Netball club for bank details. Emma competed against students from Rosebud, Dromana, Padua and Frankston secondary colleges at the event, which was held in March at Rosebud Primary School. Local MP Martin Dixon presented the prizes. The annual Youth of the Year program, sponsored by Lions Clubs, aims to encourage young people between the ages of 16 and 18 years in academic, sporting and civic achievements. Lions Clubs and independent judges meet with the students for a half hour interview and later the students present a five minute speech of their own choice. They are also required to respond to impromptu questions from the three judges. The aim is to encourage students to be confident in meeting with and speaking to adults, which can assist in their future endeavours, such as job interviews or workplace scenarios. Emma won the public speaking component and was also named overall winner.

Padua College offers a Catholic education for students across the whole of the Mornington Peninsula, and seeks to inspire in our students a lifelong love of learning. 2015 is an exciting year at Padua, with our newest campus at Tyabb having a full enrolment at Year 7. We are gradually growing our Tyabb campus to its capacity, and in 2016 will have students in Year 7 right through to Year 10. Our Tyabb campus has the same standard of facilities and curriculum as the Year 7-10 junior campuses at Mornington and Rosebud. All of our students move to the Year 11-12 campus at Mornington for their senior years, and all benefit from the extensive facilities of the larger college network, having a huge range of subjects to select from and co-curricular activities in which they may participate.

Padua College has played a vital role in Catholic education on the Mornington Peninsula since 1898. Each child at Padua College has their individual needs catered for, while experiencing a comprehensive, balanced and robust curriculum. The daily support of your child’s homeroom teacher is paramount in helping our new students to be happy and secure as they adjust to life at secondary school. Regularly timetabled pastoral care activities, specifically designed to build the confidence and interpersonal skills of each student, also take place in the homeroom.

For further information about the myriad of opportunities that Padua College offers, please contact the registrar, Amanda Arnot, on 5978 2700.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

Mamma Mia, has it been 40 years? Celebrating the 40th anniversary of ABBA (the album), it is time to relive this one-of-a-kind band’s catchy hits, powerful anthems and fabulous costumes live on stage at the Frankston Arts Centre on Saturday May 2. In 2014, GOLD The Ultimate ABBA Show landed in Australia for their ‘New Arrival Tour,’ performing to sold-out houses and playing to over 10,000 people across the country. Now Happy Days Records are thrilled to present them once again in 2015 for their new show celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of the 1975 album ABBA – featuring all your favourite hits including ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘SOS’, ‘I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do’ and many more. Can you believe it has been four decades on since the release of the band’s third self-titled album? The opening track, Mamma Mia, was released as a standalone single due to Australia’s adoration of the Swedish pop group that forced pressure on the group’s record label and

management to eventually lift the track as a single in September 1975 – a single that rocketed to the top of the Australian singles charts where it remained for ten straight weeks. The album sold eleven times platinum. GOLD The Ultimate ABBA Show is all about giving audiences a true ABBA experience and this will prove no different once again featuring internationally recognised ABBA performers who have taken to the stage globally with both Kathleen Maloney (Agnetha) and Kirsten Elliott (Frida) commanding attention and respect in their performances on the most recent 2014 New Arrival Tour. Don’t miss your chance to unleash your inner dancing queen to all of ABBA’s hits in this special two-hour concert production. It’s time to bring out the flares and platform shoes and prepare yourselves for GOLD The Ultimate ABBA Show 40th Anniversary of ABBA Tour! W: www.thefac.com.au P: 9784 1060

A Creative Peninsula Over the last few years there has been an amazing array of creative outcomes realised for our communities as a result of a dedicated arts and culture team of Mornington Peninsula Shire. Andrea Ebsworth, Mornington Peninsula Shire Cultural Planner, looks at where we are at with Arts & Culture. Since becoming the Shire’s Cultural Planner my focus has been on building links, networks and stakeholder connections and collaborative opportunities with businesses, schools and communities in the delivery of an Arts & Culture Strategy. The Vision: Fostering creativity, sense of place and cultural vitality. To do this it has been integral to rightfully position practicing artists and cultural producers at the core of programs, projects and events that raise the profile of the peninsula as a culturally vital destination and crucial to expanding the view of and imbedding greater value for culture as an integral element of place and the liveability of community life.

Some of the key achievements have been: • Initiating a dedicated Shire website Arts & Culture page • Integrating the cultural dimension into Shire policy and planning processes • Dispersed $135K in 4 years via Creative Community Grants for place-based community driven projects. • Established an online Arts Blog promoting over 20 events per month, averaging 100 visits per day, over 93,000 views since 2010. • Established the Mornington Peninsula Music Network and website in 2011. • Acquired works by artists representing the peninsula’s cultural heritage. Contact Andrea Ebsworth on 5950 1716 or mobile 0447 629 628 Email:andrea.ebsworth@mornpen.vic.gov.au

• Seeded new festivals and music events. • Supported Indigenous heritage collections, activities and festivals • Drafted a Public Art Policy • Purchased a pop-up tent with Shire branding to present Art on the Move • Presented a series of Artalk Roundtable Sessions as peer networking and other information sharing sessions. • A monthly changing exhibitions program for artists in the Foyer of Mornington Library. • Provided a Music Bursary program for peninsula classical music students. • Hosted Orchestra Victoria for 4 years to work with music teachers and peninsula students. • Employed a Southern Peninsula Arts Development Officer to assist communities to realise their creative aspirations. The ‘pilot’ Artist designed Flags Project goes up in April - Sorrento, Rye and Rosebud.

Where are we up to: Later this year we begin evaluating the A Creative Peninsula Strategy. The community will be encouraged to respond to the direction of the policy and resultant outcomes to assess the effectiveness of the vision and goals in preparation for the next.

CUSP Design ideas that push boundaries

Architecture, fashion, robotics and sound design are just some of the fields explored in an exciting interactive exhibition now showing at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. CUSP: Designing into the next decade brings together 12 Australian designers who have the potential to influence lifestyle, learning and culture, developing ideas that could change the way we inhabit the world. This fun and interactive exhibition considers who is working ‘on the cusp’ of thinking in their field and what is driving their work. Mari Velonaki’s Blue Iris is ‘intelligent’

ANZAC the music

A hundred years and still standing

War brings out the best and the worst in folk but the memories of grief, happiness, sorrow and mateship are best remembered in music. This seems a much neglected part of the 100 year remembrance of Australia’s bloody birthing at Gallipoli! Without the songs they sang, it is unknown whether the soldiers could have maintained the morale to survive the horrors of war. The Diggers and Kiwis always sang, whether to laugh in the face of dreadful adversity or to remember their loved ones at home. To revive this often forgotten chord of conflicts past, Andrew Farrell and Peter Mungo Jupp have decided to put on a show dedicated to that very spirit of the Australians and New Zealanders, who shoulder to shoulder, in many battlefields, guarded their countries. To understand these horrendous times, Peter has dug out some great video and photography to illustrate the maelstrom that is war! Some of the songs are sad. Some stir us to comradeship. Some are even frivolous, but all kept the souls of the troops heartened and aware. Join them in this musical and image rich journey from Gallipoli and the Somme. From Tobruk to London and New Guinea. From Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan to the present day. From the men and women of the air force, navy and armies of New Zealand and Australia. The musicians are the legendary pianist Andrew Farrell (the Wizard), the elegant vocalist Donna McConville and saxophonist/trumpet player Ashley Gordian. All top rankers. Enjoy a meal and wine beforehand or just celebrate our musical heritage. Your hosts, Andrew and Terryn Hickinbotham are only too keen to participate in this rich story. Concert at Beleura House and Garden Beleura – the House and Garden in Mornington – takes us back to a time where life was unhurried and truly elegant. A heritage mansion and the former ‘Summer House’ of the Tallis family, Beleura was left to the Victorian people after John Tallis’ death in 1996 and was opened as a

house museum with its historical artefacts (furniture, art, library, music room and an amazing archive of theatre memorabilia) in 2004. This treasure-trove of some of our peninsula forefather’s effects is enhanced by an extensive and inspiring ‘Italian garden’. Individual and group bookings to tour this house of national significance are a must when on the peninsula. Tours include tea/coffee and a light lunch. A special recital awaits on Tuesday May 26, when Melbourne contemporary chamber music ensemble

PLEXUS brings together three of Melbourne’s most vibrant and versatile musicians, Monica Curro (violin), Philip Arkinstall (clarinet) and Stefan Cassomenos playing the splendid concert grand piano in the John Tallis Pavilion. Head along at 1.30pm for the PLEXUS recital, followed by Beleura’s famous afternoon tea at a cost of $30 or $25 concession. P: 5975 2027 E: info@beleura.org.au

As a Tallis family friend, Anna Russell spent time at Beleura in the 1950s, entertaining all with wild accounts of her “scads of international relatives, ‘dotty’, ‘potty’, endearingly eccentric and exceedingly unfecund to the last. Local students’ art shown at NGV Three Mornington Peninsula students have been selected to have their work showcased in the exclusive StArt Up: Top Arts 2015 exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The exhibition, now showing at Federation Square, features works by 42 of the state’s top VCE art and studio arts students and offers a glimpse into young people’s concerns, experiences, ideas and creativity. It is also hint at the future of contemporary art.

Woodleigh College’s James Bugg, Brittany D’Argaville from the Peninsula School and Mount Erin Secondary student Ashleigh Newman all have works on display. Clockwise from top left:

James is showcasing his stunning photographs that emphasise the disjointed relationship between human, technology and nature.

Brittany’s work involves striking neon light designs that critique gender roles and stereotypes in the media, while Ashleigh presents a series of colourful portraits of pop-culture figures. Other students’ works include a self-portrait constructed with Rubik’s cubes, a film-projecting bicycle and a ‘living dress’, with each of the thought- provoking pieces carefully chosen from nearly 3000 submissions. They consider a variety of themes including our relationship with nature, exploration of personal identity and gender politics.

Ashleigh Newman Tyler Oakley 2014 coloured pencil 31.5 x 20.6 cm (image), 41.7 x 29.5 cm (sheet) Mount Erin College, Frankston South

“Each student has engaged with a high level of conceptual thinking and artistic technique to develop these pieces, and we’d like to thank the teachers who’ve supported and fostered their artistic development thus far,” says Tony Ellwood, NGV director.

The exhibition also features a People’s Choice Award, which will be determined by votes cast on-site at the NGV. StArt Up: Top Arts 2015 is showing at the NGV Studio in Federation Square until June 28. Admission is free.

The Mornington Peninsula Art Show, now in its sixth year, runs until April 6 and is raising money for the Rosebud Secondary College Chaplaincy program, which offers a variety of pastoral care, and health and wellbeing programs to students. The Mornington Peninsula Art Show is supported by Mornington Peninsula Shire, numerous local businesses, a curatorial team of local artists and dedicated volunteers. Mornington Peninsula Mayor Bev Colomb said the shire offers an annual Art Acquisition Award as part of the art show. “The award, now valued at $2000, is given for the best Mornington Peninsula-themed work, which contributes

Mushroom season is almost here and who wouldn’t love to sit down to a hearty meal of locally sourced mushrooms to help warm the belly this autumn? As well as tasting delicious, mushrooms are packed with antioxidants to boost your immune system and they are a great source of vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin D and B12, folate, potassium, copper, riboflavin and biotin. Head chef at T’Gallant Winemakers, Riccardo Messora, is a local expert when it comes to mushroom picking and takes great joy in creating fabulous fungi dishes. Riccardo says the best places to source mushrooms locally include Dromana, Main Ridge and Red Hill. However, you must be careful not to collect poisonous varieties, which can be difficult if you are not properly educated. “Get a good book to learn what mushrooms grow wild in your area,” Riccardo advises. “Cross-examine the mushroom you have found with the book; stem, a spore print, what the mushroom is growing on and the structure of the stem base. “Take two collecting baskets when foraging and put the

mushrooms positively identified as edible in one. Put mushrooms you are uncertain about in the other. “You won’t get sick by simply touching a toxic mushroom, but throw away when uncertain. Go with an expert the first few times.” If you want to learn more about local mushroom varieties, such as slippery jack and pine mushrooms, and how to select them, Riccardo will be running tours throughout May where he will take you on an educational ‘mushroom meander’ through the vines of Main Ridge. You even get to feast on such delights as mushroom soup, mushroom and gorgonzola pizza and sautéed wild mushrooms followed by a private wine tasting. “As a mushroom lover, I like to appreciate them more on their own, simply sautéed with herbs and garlic or white wine,” Riccardo says. “My favourite dishes would be chicken cacciatore, wild mushroom and sausage risotto and mushrooms with four cheese polenta.” Yum! meet the Blue Bay a fresh new look The family owned and operated business of Blue Bay has been abuzz with excitement with the launch of their new brand. Blue Bay has been steadily growing over the last few years with greater distribution and expansion into local supermarkets. “We reached a stage in our business where our brand and label had to be redeveloped to reach a wider audience,” explains managing director Andre Kogut. “For many years we have sold our product at farmers markets and we have been able to speak directly with our customers and tell them the benefits of our products. “When a product is sold through retail outlets, the label has to do the talking for you.” The new brand is fresh and clean, with a strong emphasis on the product being made on the Mornington Peninsula.

Step back in time when you step inside Ox & Co Bakery, to a time when bread was baked fresh using only natural ingredients. After a lifetime of working in the industry, Steve Noonan, known fondly as ‘Ox’, decided it was high time he set up his own bakery that cut out the chemicals, pig fat and palm oil and favours natural yeast over commercial yeast.

Ox and his team bake naturally leavened bread, taking 16-26 hours to ferment on the board, making it easier to digest. They even roll their dough by hand, ensuring a gentler process than machine handling. Ingredients used are of a high standard and are sourced as close to home as possible. Try the light organic rye, made from ingredients like certified organic white flour, filtered water and Murray River

Salt, it is also vegan friendly. A new high hydration loaf, Pane Aqua, is now available on Saturdays, but stop in any day of the week and ask Ox for advice on breads that will suit your family’s tastes, or have him bake you up some loaves specifically tailored for your upcoming dinner party menu. wining & dining at its best

Polperro has created a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy great food and wine, with its own take on an already well-established wine and dining culture on the Mornington Peninsula. With its strikingly modern interior and designer detailing, Polperro Bistro and Cellar Door at Red Hill provides a contemporary setting for drinking and dining. The space is earthy, warm and inviting and integrates the outdoors seamlessly with its floor-to-ceiling windows and large open-air timber deck. Polperro Bistro has a casual approach to dining with impeccable service, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the ambiance of the venue overlooking the vines and valley.

APRIL 2015 (42)

The kitchen works daily to create regional, contemporary and seasonal plates; incorporating the harvests from the Polperro garden, while also sourcing quality produce from nearby local suppliers. The menu is built on fresh, textural and seasonal flavours and provides flexibility for diners. Try a share-style plate and pair it with a glass of Polperro or Even Keel wine. The friendly and informed staff at Polperro are always happy to recommend a matching wine to accompany your meal, and can suggest the wines that are produced from the vines on the property and from other nearby vineyards owned and managed by the winemaker. Over the coming months, bistro diners can take advantage of the special lunch deal of 2 courses for $45pp and 3 courses for $55pp. The bistro provides a cosy retreat for long lazy meals, with the open fireplace and outdoor fire pits helping to ease the chill. Dinner Thyme After 30 years in the industry, About Thyme’s head chef Scott Devery knows a thing or two about creating an exciting, modern and diverse menu.

The dinner menu consists of tempting tapas (great for a night out with friends), delicious meat dishes of lamb, duck, pork, steak and seafood, plus plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options. The restaurant is also fully licensed or you can BYO wine and the decadent desserts are the perfect way to complete your evening.

Following stints at La Banque (now The Bay Hotel), Harry’s Bistro, Albert Street and most recently Garlic Kiss, Scott brings his talent and flair to About Thyme, on Mornington’s Blake Street, which he owns and operates with wife Katrina. Local foodies will recall Garlic Kiss’s famous Hungarian goulash, which has been just as popular on the About Thyme menu. Stop in for a hearty brekkie or lunch from Wednesday to Sunday, or saunter in for dinner on Thursday to Sunday nights.

food & wine AT ROSE GPO

Rosebud has really come of age With awesome music, a great vibe and one of the most on trend menus on the peninsula, Rose GPO has got the goods. Just over 12 months ago Patrick Bowring took over as Head Chef. “One year on and I am loving it,” he said. Patrick has introduced many innovations including the smoker, which has become so popular they now have 2. With the weather cooling down, their seasonally changing menu is now focusing on Autumn ingredients. This new menu really showcases their smoker. New items include 12 hour smoked pork sliders with buttermilk coleslaw, jalapeno salsa, pickle in a brioche bun; Rolled pork belly filled with fennel garlic and lemon, parsnip puree, sage and grilled radicchio; Porcini gnocchi, local pine mushrooms,

parsley, white wine and butter with buffalo mozzarella; a 350gm crumbed veal cutlet, potato salad and anchovy butter; Texas 600gm smoked rib eye served with beer battered chips, seasonal greens and choice of sauces. And that’s not even touching the sides, you are offered some fabulous choices from their Express Lunch menu. You simply must try their desserts like GPO eskimo pie or Ricotta donuts, there is even a cheesecake in a glass with biscuit base, lemon curd and meringue (and it is sensational!) There is one thing for certain the Rose GPO is the place to go when you want to explore delicious new flavours. And don’t forget they will entertain you as well. Sunday arvo Blues is back. Soloists, duos and the odd band all regular performers - will entertain throughout the season. Get away from mundane and get down to the Rose GPO.

Madame President!

@ Mornington Peninsula Gourmet by Liz Rogers

Tamara Newing from BoatShed Cheese is one busy lady. Up early most days to nurture her range of delicately delicious artisan handmade cheese, this motivated gourmet food lover is now president of Mornington Peninsula Gourmet. “It happened out of the blue,” she says. “I’ve been a member of MP Gourmet since 2011. I went along to a couple of meetings when I first moved to the peninsula. “I’ve never been the type to sit back and let others do all the work.” And that’s one thing Tamara isn’t afraid of – hard work. She has built her BoatShed Cheese business out of love and into a world recognised business. Her Compass Gold and Persian Feta have received gold medals (in the biggest worldwide cheese competition in Nantwich, England), and you can now enjoy her finely crafted gourmet cheese in restaurants, shops and delicatessens across the

peninsula and throughout Melbourne. She also sells at eleven regional markets. No wonder she’s moved into larger premises and now has her oldest daughter Brittany working alongside her making cheese. “I was MP Gourmet’s secretary from

2013/14 so I understood the mechanics of the group. “When the president (Greg Olive) decided to step down, they asked me to do it. “I had to laugh and said ‘Only if you call me Madame President!’ So here we are.” Tamara brings business capabilities and creative entrepreneurial acumen to the role, and a sense of humour! “I want to make sure there is real communication between members,” she says. There will be four included networking events per year and committee meetings every six to eight weeks. “I want members to exchange knowledge. It’s important to work together and build a strong membership list and offer real

solutions to business problems.” MP Gourmet will be running a Social Media 101 session in the near future to do just that. “Showing members how to use social media to promote business gives them skills and control,” says Tamara. There are also monthly updates on gourmet food news via the MP Gourmet newsletter. So if you’re a gourmet producer on the peninsula, why not get in contact with Tamara directly on Tamara@ boatshedcheese.com to find out more about how becoming a MP Gourmet member can help your business. The next MP Gourmet networking event is in June. www.mpgourmet.com.au

of the total heat in your home, creating a trapped layer of air between the fabric and the window, which results in an insulating air pocket. Studies demonstrate that curtains made from block out fabric can reduce heat gains by 33 per cent. Curtains also stay cooler than other window treatments in the summer because their pleats and folds lose heat through convection. Linings Adding Dollar Curtains

It is also the highest quality lining available - Australian Made, manufactured in Melbourne and ISO Certified to 9001- 2008. Pelmets Boxed pelmets form a barrier to stop the warm air that has risen to the top of the room from escaping over the top of the curtain and through the window. The pelmets also stop air coming back through the glass in summer by trapping it under the pelmet before it gets into the room.

Coastal walkway still closed

Residents of Mornington’s Beleura Hill are eagerly awaiting the reopening of the popular coastal cliff pathway between Caraar Creek Lane and Mills Beach, which remains closed by council for safety reasons. The pathway was deemed dangerous and closed off in November 2013 following a landslip, believed to be related to stormwater drainage issues from nearby properties. Mornington Peninsula Shire has been

undertaking studies in the area to determine the best course of action. Mayor Bev Colomb acknowledged the pathway was a ‘highly valued and muchloved community asset’ and said the shire continued to carry out testing to determine on how best to stabilise the area and repair the path before cost estimates are prepared and advocacy for funding can commence. Residents and visitors can keep up to date with the progress by visiting the shire website at www.mornpen.vic.gov.au

With this mild autumn weather and the first plantings of our winter veggies in and growing strongly, it is a good time to plan for the addition of a few more deciduous fruit trees. We can grow a wide range of fruit trees on the peninsula to provide us with fresh, delicious produce for much of the year. You may have to adjust the condition of your soil a little depending on where you are, but generally if your soils drain adequately you will be able to grow much of what you want. Apples, pears, quinces and nashi do really well, as do all stonefruit, persimmon, figs and mulberries. All of these fruit trees can be grown as standards (or stand-alone trees) but you will need to dedicate a fair bit of space to fit them all in. There are other ways though to be just as productive in your yard while taking up much less space. Two common methods are to grow fruit trees on semi-dwarfing rootstocks as standards or as espaliers. The advantages of both being the number and variety of fruit trees you can fit into the same space. Espaliering fruit trees along fence lines or against walls can make use of otherwise under-utilised space and can add interest in your garden, while of course providing you with an abundance of fresh produce. You can

also grow your climbing and cane fruits in a similar fashion. Trellises erected on fences, walls, sheds and water-tanks make great use of vertical spaces for grapevines, kiwifruit, raspberries and a range of blackberries. These can all be available bare-rooted from around June-August. As you plan where and how to grow more fruiting plants, take time to consider how the various spaces you choose will look during the cooler months when the trees lose their foliage. It’s often a good idea to combine perennials with your deciduous plantings to maintain some colour and structure during winter, which may be in the form of evergreen fruiting plants, perennial herbs and flowers or companion plants. You can also use local and native plants species to complement your fruit trees. While growing deciduous fruit trees and climbers can provide a lot of fruit over the warmer months, let’s not forget about the other fruit trees you can grow. Avocados, tamarillos, and a range of citrus fruits could all occupy some room in your garden and can be highly productive if cared for. And if you have a family there are few things more nourishing for young souls and

bodies than to forage in a garden full of goodness. To be able to walk out your door and grab a basketful of fresh, juicy fruit is one of the great pleasures of edible gardening. So replace that old camellia with something that is going to be more productive for you and have a think about other spaces in your yard that can be used to grow more fruiting varieties. You won’t be disappointed.

Happy GARDENing! Drew Cooper, Edible Gardens www.ediblegardens.com.au
