How will you spend this Valentine’s Day? Spoilt with roses and chocolates, a lavish dinner out? Or will you be crying into your pillow or commiserating with friends? Perhaps it’s just another uneventful day? However, try as you may, Valentine’s Day is a little hard to ignore - with page upon page of love messages in the newspapers, red love hearts and long stemmed roses for as far as the eye can see…It’s like love on steroids. Even the television is strewn with love stories and romantic comedies and it seems even the most level headed of us get caught up in this day of love. Much like New Year’s Eve, the pressure is on with many lovers remembering disappointing Valentine’s Days for years. So what does it mean in the year 2014? And how can we do things a little differently? For those in love, it is a starry-eyed way of showing your loved one how much you care. And there’s no shortage of ways to spend Valentine’s Day, with restaurants, cafes and pubs all offering

Florists work for weeks around the clock just to prepare for this day of love that compares only to Mother’s Day in terms of demand.

And let’s not forget the men who inevitably succumb to the pressure of buying a gift, whether it be lingerie, flowers or chocolates, or anything heart shaped and wrapped in a red ribbon. Now this isn’t to say that I personally am not a big fan of Valentine’s Day. After all, any day you get to demonstrate your love is a good day and who doesn’t love getting spoilt and pampered? While I have a husband now, I have spent my fair share of Valentine’s Days alone, avoiding couples and being acutely aware that I was single. Not quite as bad as Bridget Jones, (I didn’t hide under my doona eating chocolate), but I still tried to do everything to avoid acknowledging that day. Some singletons have even gone so far as creating events to oppose it the PAV dinner where People Against Valentines get together for a meal, or acknowledging their own day called SAD, Singles Awareness Day, wearing

green or black instead of red. For those lucky in love, by all means spoil your partner, show him or her that you care. Dazzle them with poetry and love songs, exotic meals or just a walk along the beach. But here’s an idea - what if Valentine’s Day was also about another kind of love, the one we have for our children and our friends? Maybe taking the time to make a telephone call to your mum or dad, take the kids out for dinner or just let a friend know how much you care? Let Valentine’s Day be for everyone so let’s share the love…. We know you will LOVE the February issue of Mornington Peninsula Magazine where love appears to be the theme.

Melissa Hodge talks to Paul Dillon about his tales of the wetlands, photo Haydn Godony

POBBLEBONK FROGS AND GURUS Living near the wetlands in Balnarring, Paul Dillon would spend his evening hours blissfully listening to the symphony of the wildlife. Then one day it came to him. This was the perfect backdrop for a story and so ‘The Symphony’ was born.

“It is an eco-adventure based on the Mornington Peninsula, like an Australian Wind in the Willows,” says Paul of his first venture into writing a book. “The symphony of the wetlands is disrupted when some builders who are doing painting go to clean their brushes. The youngest is in a hurry and pours the brush cleaning fluid down the roadside drain and that enters the wetlands. The symphony stops when the pobblebonk frogs pack their bags to find a clean wetlands to live in.” What follows is an enchanting adventure where a group of young girls set out to track down the frogs on their bikes, which in turn leads to their own dramas. Readers will be intrigued and engrossed with characters like the Balbirooroo guru, an elderly frog who stops the symphony and appears to humans for the first time in history, and the spider whose magical weavings are intertwined with the symphony notes. What ensues is a fantastical journey into the world of the wetlands, as only a true eco-writer like Paul Dillon could create. He literally lets these characters come to life before our very eyes. The UK born, local songwriter and musician has been living on the peninsula for 14 years and fell in love with the community and the environment. Now living in Red Hill, Paul says he loves the fact you can be among the mountains and have the ocean just five minutes away. Proud to have always earnt a quid doing what he loves, Paul’s venture into writing ‘The Symphony’ has evolved as naturally as the wetlands’ harmonies.

FEBRUARY 2014 (27)

“I used to go to the wetlands every night after jam nights at The Heritage, and listen to the different rhythms and notes of the wildlife. I came up with two main characters, the frog and the spider, and drew them first. I showed them to my mum and she remembered them. Before she passed away, she said you should revisit those drawings. So I did about two years ago and it has evolved from there,” says Paul, who then locked himself in with a bottle of red and started writing. Before he knew it, Paul’s characters did come to life when it was performed at Frankston Cultural Centre last year by children from Balnarring Primary School. “Watching my work come to life was surreal and lovely and very moving, the most satisfying thing I’ve done apart from having my own children,” says Paul, of the process which still continues, being produced as a community play in conjunction with a live orchestra in the future. “And with illustrations for the book being completed at the moment, hard copies and online books should be available before you know it.” And of the writing process? Paul says it flowed but it is very tiring. “I didn’t use a computer but pencil wrote it in a book. It feels natural to me and flows much better. It’s a fluid movement, like painting. The process was a mixture of frustration and excitement because I knew I was onto something good,” he says. And as for his inspiration, like many writers Paul’s muse also involved his children. “My two daughters were the inspiration for the young girls in the story, for some of the adventures the girls have are actual things we have done together,” he says of his girls who are following in dad’s footsteps with their love of music and singing. It’s pretty clear that his mum was there too, guiding him along the path, and as Paul says “a strong amazing woman who was a guru of love”. read online www.mpmag.com.au

Year 21 at Woodleigh

ENCHANTING IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE Like many great success stories, The Enchanted Child started by chance, and now it has become one of the most beautiful childrens’ clothing and toy stores you could find anywhere! A true inspiration of what one woman can do when she sets her mind to it, single mother, Julie Halpern started her business as a tiny shop in Flinders on a shoestring budget six years ago. Since then the business has grown into the beautiful store it is today in the heart of Balnarring, plus a flourishing online store. The name ‘The Enchanted Child’ was chosen to reflect that pure magic within all children. “There is a divine purity in kids. You can see it in their eyes. You can feel it when you hold a newborn baby and when you see kids laugh and play. Close your eyes and you can feel it in your heart.” says Julie. The bright and colourful store has a joyous feeling about it from the moment you walk in the door with rows of babies and children’s clothes in all the colours of the rainbow, cuddly baby gifts, wooden toys, dolls, puzzles, canvas shoes and little handbags, just to name a few of the treasures you will find.

By the end of Year 12, students should be equipped with all the skills they need for the years ahead. That’s why at Woodleigh, we strive to develop their confidence and independence, as well as their intellect. Our girls and boys are presented with a range of activities designed to expand their academic, creative and social horizons. Diverse experiences prepare them for whatever the future may hold.

At Woodleigh, Year 12 is just the beginning.

All the toys and clothing have been lovingly hand-picked to reflect the boutique style of The Enchanted Child. Julie chooses each item with the kids in mind. “I am constantly searching for new and fun toys and craft activities that will make kids smile,” says Julie. “Each piece of clothing is carefully selected for its style, quality and also affordability. This is the shop where you are sure to find the ideal gift and outfit and at reasonable prices, plus have it beautifully gift wrapped!” Call into the Balnarring shop where the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Customer service is a key element of The Enchanted Child so feel free to ask for advice. There’s also a play area with a tv and toys so you can browse in peace. Alternatively, you can shop online and have your orders delivered or pick them up from the shop. The online store is www.enchantedchild. com.au.

Leave the house to us and the holiday to you!

A growing trend is taking off across Australia where thousands of individuals are getting to see the world while house sitting for holidaymakers. All it takes is a desire to travel, to be level headed, flexible, love animals and open to new experiences, as UK-born couple, Charli and Ben discovered when they took on their first house sitting assignment three years ago. Little did they know they would be spending their Christmas on the other side of the world in Mt Eliza and enjoying the beautiful Mornington Peninsula for two weeks. Charli said: “We signed up to a website called trustedhousesitters.com, created a profile and the next thing we knew, we were in Costa Rica on our first assignment. “From there, we have travelled to Vancouver, America, the UK and now Australia.” Professional house and pet sitting becomes not only a lifestyle but a career for those who have the life skills and experience, a way to see the world and integrate with the locals that your typical hotel accommodation can’t offer. “While we’ve been on the Peninsula, we’ve met up with some amazing people,” said Charli. “The best experience was definitely the horseback winery tours (pictured). I hadn’t ridden for some time but this was seriously the highlight of our stay. We visited a few different wineries and the Red Hill Brewery and bought what is still my favourite sparkling wine from Montalto, which we drank on Christmas Day.” Charli says the first thing you need to do is create a good profile with recent photographs of yourselves and linking these to any online blogging you do. “We do a travel blog called Wanderlusters and an adventure column for US magazine WildJunket,” added Charli who is still totally in love with the house sitting lifestyle.

“It’s become a lifestyle for us now and it’s definitely becoming more popular. It’s such a win-win situation. The homeowners get their house looked after and animals cared for and we have the chance to subsidise our living expenses and to travel to amazing places like the Mornington Peninsula. It’s a simple process but it works so well.” The website, aussiehousesitters.com.au explains it all - house sitters avoid rent in exchange for the responsibility of looking after a house and the pets living in it when the owners are away on holiday. For some young people, house sitting has another advantage. In an age of rising costs and house prices, it turns out to be a way to avoid paying renting costs, freeing them up to save for their own home. So, what sort of person is the ideal house sitter and how do you know if it’s right for you? Check out any number of the house sitting websites, register your interest for a small fee, and see if the work comes to you. It could be the chance of a lifetime you have been waiting for. - Melissa Hodge

George Wallis is ninety-five years young. Large, dextrous hands still steady supporting the tray he carries with two mugs of tea and biscuits on top as he makes his way down the stairs of his mud brick house in Main Ridge. He mostly potters about these days - his hobbies used to be photography and bee keeping - but throughout his working life as an engineer, his love of family has remained steadfast and true. (George had eight children with wife Shirley who passed 14 years ago). Moving to Adelaide when he was four years old with boot maker father Charles, full time mother Lotti and siblings, George started his engineering life as a junior draftsman in 1934 before being called up for service in 1939. ‘I studied Mechanical Engineering at the School of Mines and Industries in Adelaide and then went on to a correspondence course with The British Institute of Engineering Technology’.

Engineering Wallis – an ever evolving life by Liz Rogers

‘I’d been working at the Woodville Holden Plant in Adelaide developing two and six pounder anti-tank guns and bomb casings before being called up’. That’s what General Motors did before producing the all Australian footballs, meat-pies, kangaroos and Holden cars classic automobile in 1948. His time in the army training as a Vickers machine gunner was short lived. ‘There was a shortage of technical people while the war was taking place so I was transferred to Melbourne in 1941 to work as a project engineer on special vehicles and work boats’. (Think troop

transporters, mobile photographic units and vehicle recovery units for the army and RAAF). ‘We also worked on forty foot work boats for the navy, army and air force’, he goes on. These original boats had the same hull as the Plover of Bay Fish N Trips fame docked in Mornington. ‘But there has been a new superstructure built on the Plover’, says George. ‘These projects shut down after the war was over. It was then that GM got onto producing the Holden car’. George was instrumental in the implementation of Three D graphics at the Fisherman’s Bend General Motors plant in the late seventies after travelling to head office in Detroit and realising how a computer system could revolutionise an engineering department. He retired as executive engineer in 1980. George Wallis likes to get things done. His owner/builder home in Main Ridge built thirty years ago was a labour of love. Local materials were used, including the beautiful stone (from the Mount Martha quarry) fire place in the lounge built by one of his sons. ‘Engineering has been a great choice for me. It’s an ever evolving industry and the work is a challenge, plus you meet lots of different people of diverse histories. Automotive engineering is particularly like this. You are continually reworking concepts and taking from the best to create something even greater’. And that is what George Wallis has engineered for himself and those he loves, a greatness of legacy that has a life of its very own.

ONE TOUGH MOTHER What do you get when a group of women decide to do something positive in the fight against breast cancer? A team called Tough Mothers, that’s what… Instigated by one tough mother, breast cancer survivor and team captain, Louise McIlwraith, Tough Mothers is all about a group of everyday women wanting to do something proactive to help other women. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and of course it came as a complete shock to me. I was one of the lucky ones but it made me decide I wanted to do something to help, so I started raising money for The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, benefiting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre,” said Louise. “It is a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Melbourne. It’s going to be a challenge, but we are ready to do something bold and powerful in effort to end women’s cancers once and for all.” With her mind set on raising funds, Louise then went about raising the $2,000 needed to enter the walk and the response from Peninsula women was overwhelming. She added: “It all happened pretty quickly. I had a lot of contacts who were more than happy to help and, as the word got out, more and more women wanted to be involved. Our team has already raised about $38,000. We have lots of different women from all walks of life, some who have been affected by breast cancer and others who want to help this worthy cause.” Another local lady, Francesca from Amica Hair, has joined the fight after experiencing first hand her mother’s long two year

fight with pancreatic cancer. Francesca and Louise, along with the 26 other strong, caring women are testament to what people can do when they set their mind to it. “We are proof of the power of what women can do once they get together,” said Louise, who stresses the importance of having regular mammograms. “I went for a routine mammogram which is what led me on this path. Like many others, if I hadn’t gone early enough it could have been far worse. It is important that women know if you are over 40 you can get free mammograms. You simply need to contact Breast Screen Victoria and they will refer you to your local breast screen clinic. They are free in Victoria and it saved my life.” To find out more information or donate to this wonderful cause, call up the website www.endcancer.org.au, choose the Melbourne link and search for Tough Mothers in the ‘Donate’ section.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

Lose weight, eat well, quit smoking, be a better parent, change career, donate to more charities, read books, watch less tv, walk the dog more, exercise - the list goes on. The list, that is, of our never ending New Years resolutions.

Chances are, by February, you’ve already decided that these are going to be next year’s goals as you get hooked on more tv

and less books, the dog is still waiting to be walked, and the stairmaster you bought in a positive fleeting moment on ebay sits alone in the corner still in its box. The good news is, its not just you failing miserably for another year. We’re all guilty of it and, according to the experts, most resolutions are doomed to failure. Be positive and try again!

Remember those hazy, lazy summer days at the beach when you were a kid? At Lovin’ Summer, they are all about making those days as enjoyable as possible - that’s why they developed their unique beach tents. “Unlike any other beach shade product on the market, we designed our Lovin’ Summer beach tents to put an end to uncomfortable

shade protection, tricky knots and complicated instructions.” explained Kel Farrington. Lovin’ Summer beach tents combine coastal style with practical design to create a simple, innovative product that looks great while offering maximum light, airflow and UV protection. “Our four stunning designs – Santorini, Biarittz, Bondi and South Beach - are lightweight, easy to carry and can easily be put up by one person.”

Kel continued. They can be angled to gain optimal protection from the sun all day while capturing the cool breeze. Lovin’ Summer beach tents are compact yet big enough to cover the whole family in comfort, and they come in a great range of contemporary designs. It’s the first beach tent in the world that can be put up by one person, all preassembled with no tricky knots and takes less than a

WALKING THE TALK - SMART! “Have a good day at work” is a catchphrase heard every morning and local businesswoman, Shannon Smit is actually doing something about it. Shannon relocated her accounting firm, SMART Business Solutions, to 328 Main Street, a state of the art building right here in Mornington. Shannon also wanted to do it smarter, creating an environment where people would actually like to come to work. Shannon said: “With the move to the new offices, I wanted to ensure the office was going to be great place to work. “I had done some research into the trends with offices around the world and learnt that while Europe is leading the world with this approach, why can’t this be done in Mornington? “We now have a leading office that takes care of the health and wellbeing of our employees, with open space and natural daylight, and ergonomic features like electronic height adjustable desks and boardroom tables that can be flipped up and adjusted to accommodate the meeting style.” SMART Business Solutions, true to its name, has created a paperless office with only two filing cabinets moved to the new office. “It is a cloud based firm with the ability to work from any location and has high energy efficiency with four air conditioning units rather than one for the whole office. There is also a water tank under the car park,” said Shannon, proud of her achievements in creating a great team culture and environmentally friendly work space. “Even the colour scheme has been designed to motivate rather

than depress as my research showed colour schemes can affect how we work on a day to day basis.” Supporting the local community, the office was designed by a local designer, JR Design, constructed by Geoff Taylor Constructions using local contractors wherever possible to build the office. The interior was designed by Peschek Designs. “’We are excited that we must have got it right as the building was nearly fully leased before completion,” added Shannon, who is a particular fan of the electronic standing desk SMART Business Solutions started using two years ago. “It’s an electronically controlled desk, that is height adjustable. You can put it down low to work sitting down or you can raise it up so that you can stand upright while working. We also have an office spin bike and a treadmill. This type of office environment is starting to become the norm in Europe,” said Shannon, who has actually lost kilos following the purchase of her height adjustable desk doing literally just one hour a day on the bike or treadmill under the desk. Other staff have also noticed marked improvement in their health with back problems disappearing from the ability to alternate between sitting and standing at their desks, weight loss and better overall health and wellbeing. So it seems SMART Business Solutions Accounting & Taxation Advisors really do walk the talk. Find out for yourself by visiting Shannon, Nadia and the team at 328 Main Street, Mornington. In Australia, the family will always be asked to confirm the donation wishes of the deceased before donation for transplantation can proceed. Families that have discussed and know each other’s wishes are much more likely to support donation proceeding. While almost anyone can register their intent to donate their organs, less than one per cent of people will die in hospital in the specific circumstances where organ donation is actually possible, although many more have the opportunity to donate tissue. To help optimise every opportunity for potential donation, local families should ‘have the chat that saves lives’ this DonateLife Week. With one organ and tissue donor able to transform the lives of ten or more people, it’s a conversation that could one day save lives. For more information, visit www.donatelife.gov.au FEBRUARY 2014 (27)

AdPlace 324TC.R

From Sunday, February 23 to Sunday, March 2, Australians are being urged to discover the facts about organ and tissue donation, register their donation decisions on the Australian Organ Donor Register, and most importantly, ‘have the chat’ with loved ones to make sure their donation decisions are known.

Mr Perkins and His Ape Yes he IS coming!

I grew up with Tex. He didn’t live next door, nor down the street, but he was everywhere to anyone involved in the club/pub/music scene during the 80s and 90s in Melbourne. Tex (Beasts of Bourbon, The Cruel Sea, Salamander Jim, Thug and The Dark Horses et al) was – and still is - a musical maverick. The Thug gigs would end with mock brawls between band and sometimes audience members Once Perkins had to be stitched up after landing on broken glass that had been chucked on stage. Beasts of Bourbon and The Cruel Sea were known for draining every last drop. ‘That time was intense and punishing. The Ape’ – a combination of Perkins’ animal grunt side and aping around with his primitive mates – ‘is all about having a ball’. I’d heard about Perkins before we speak. Doesn’t like interviews, arrogant, is an arse hole (quoted from The Ape website folks!) Never one to take too much notice of talk, I thought I’d kick off with asking him how much fun he was having aping around with Raul Sanchez (Magic Dirt), Gus Agars (The Dark Horses) and Pat Bourke (on bass and piano) in The Ape which will be playing at the Between the Bays Music Festival on February 22nd. The voice at the end of the phone is full, friendly and in harmony with the world and all its dirty laundry. Plus there’s much kindness to be heard. ‘I love it! It’s all enthusiasm. There are solid songs like Man on a Mission and there are tracks like Monkey in The Kitchen that morph each time we play. We start out with a drum and base groove and guitar lead from me. The rest is improvised. It changes every time’. Oh, and before he gives this answer, he excuses himself because it’s been a few months since he’s done any interviews and I may get some weird answers. Smooth as silk. Monkey in The Kitchen is one of the best instrumental tracks I’ve heard for ages. It sends you into The Shining, High Plains Drifter and Morning of the Earth all at once. The other tracks on The Ape’s self-titled debut album

catapult you into musical history where Slade, Pink Floyd, The Stooges, Iggy Pop and Crazy Horse rule. It sounds like home. ‘This is a referential album’, he goes on. ‘I’m a student. I listen to music constantly, so I’m always learning. I love a random shuffle play list’ (and St Kilda Footy club and the wacky sport ‘zone ball’) ‘or even Gold FM. Gotta love the classics. This album blends lots of influences together’. Crawl Back is the first single released. It loops inside and sets you in a trance you never want to leave. ‘I think only of you as my boss’ writes Tex, so I’ve just got to ask who that may be. ‘She’s the boss’, he answers. So that’s left a gap I’m prepared to fill. Tex has a long standing partner and five kids to boot! Do kids make your creative life better? ‘No, not necessarily, but they do enhance everything. There are no more long tours away. If I’m going they come with me’ - He also croons he’s going to make you love him in Gonna Make You Love Me and that’s for sure. I’ve met people besotted with this Man (In Black in 2010/11 playing Johnny Cash) even though they’ve never met him. Has this ‘rock god’ persona been worked on or has it grown organically? ‘I control everything you’ve ever thought and done. I am the all mighty powerful…, no really - people build up a mythology without any help from me’. Much chuckling converges. Over thirty years is a long time to survive in any industry. (Mr Perkins turns fifty at the end of 2014, but I’ve told him it won’t hurt…much!), Will ‘crossing over’ mean writing lyrics becomes any easier? ‘They are rare and precious’ and so is the fact that you can’t believe everything you hear. I’m not in love, but I am in like big time Mr Perkins. BRINGING INTERNATIONAL CULTURE HOME What are the steps to hosting an international exchange student? How do you gain a cross-cultural experience, at the right moment, for your family? Why host an exchange student – without pay – for Southern Cross Cultural Exchange? The questions can fly like paper planes, but the answers are down-to-earth simple. Think about why and how you can show off your Australian culture and way of life on the Peninsula to an international exchange student, from France, Germany, Italy, USA or Scandinavia. The exchange student is here not as a guest but as a member of your family – to learn about life on the other side of the world, to learn about a different education system overseas, to learn about how to adjust to a different culture –yours! It may just be the right time to alter or transform your family dynamics, or perspectives. Your family’s participation in an exchange program through voluntary hosting is the perfect excuse to imbibe in a different culture, in the heart of your own home. It couldn’t be easier as S.C.C.E. takes care of all the rest.

MONTHLY FISHING REPORT

If you have ever sent your son or daughter overseas on exchange, you know the strides he or she is making or has made to his or her personal development. How tremendous was your own child’s experience of being hosted? Reciprocity is a heart-felt reason. Or you and your family might have always been interested in that culture? Or are you planning to visit or return to visit that country again? Go international – live local. Whatever the reason, having an international exchange student can make a lasting impact to your family. S.C.C.E. welcomes parents and students enquiring about international exchange programs or hosting an international student. Visit S.C.C.E.’S National Office at 14 Ranelagh Drive, Mt. MORNINGTON

MORNINGTON PENINSULA: There are still some very nice snapper being taken out in the deep from Mornington to Mt.Martha. Hit the 18 to 20m line and concentrate on the early morning tide changes for best results. There has been snapper to 6kg taken on squid and silver whiting so it’s still not quite time to write them off yet! Some really solid reports of nice table sized whiting from Portsea. Anchor up around the boat moorings and send down plenty of berley and the fish will be there in no time. Pipi, mussel and strips of squid have all been doing the damage. From the southern part of the bay, some big gummy sharks to 20kg have been taken from both the Symonds and Pinnace Channels. Chunky fresh baits like squid and salmon have been the best baits. WESTERNPORT: Whiting reports have completely dominated from everywhere in Westernport of recent. Tyabb Bank, the Middle Spit and Tortoise Head have all

been on fire. Though the average size of the fish has been down a little bit some very nice pockets of bigger fish are well and truly there so keep on the move as fish to 48cm are still on offer. The usual baits in pipi, mussel and squid are all producing. Corinella through to Stoney Point has seen some nice gummies. Most fish are around the 6 to 8kg mark, which are prefect for the table, with the odd 15kg fish thrown in. OFFSHORE: It’s been a solid start to the shark season with Mako’s being caught to 100kg. The odd Blue Shark has also been about and the Threshers are also around a little bit closer to shore. For the full fishing report log onto www. ifish.com.au. You can also text your fishing reports to the reports hotline on 0427 693 759. Keep the reports coming and head on down to Tackle World Mornington to say Hi! Team Tackle World Mornington.

Michele Saunderson, Managing Director, Peninsula Travel

“The rush of watching a migration crossing, as an enormous herd of wildebeest and zebra scrambled for their lives across the croc-infested rapids of a river, is still with me today. “On this truly amazing journey, we also glimpsed cheetahs hunting in the rain, a male lion sleeping next to his lioness in isolation from their pride, a sole shy leopard walking through the Masai and so much more!

“Wild and beautiful Africa has become one of the most rewarding travel experiences of my life.” Let Peninsula Travel help make it one of yours. “This house was owned by my grandmother – going back 85 years ago, she had a little toilet down the back yard under the pine tree,” chuckles 90-year-old Douglas Eddington about his limestone heritage listed house in Sorrento. Douglas is one of the first to apply for early connection to the new sewerage system being constructed by South East Water. Reminiscing about his home, he recalled: “A man used to come along every week and change the pan over and away it’d go. About 75 years ago, my grandmother had a very good septic tank built in the back yard and that’s been going ever since. I feel like after the septic tank has been there doing a good job for 75 years, it’s time it was replaced with a good sewerage system.” With the early connection option (ECO) customers can pay to connect to the new sewerage system up to 16 years ahead of the scheduled rollout. This will enable customers to take advantage of the benefits of a sewer connection sooner – such as enhancing the value of their property, eliminating odours associated with failing septic tanks and removing the ongoing cost of maintenance.

Seeing the gorillas of Rwanda, at ease in their natural environment, is a privilege she will never forget. “We spent one hour with these incredible distant relatives of ours. Young gorillas frolicked on the forest floor, annoying their older siblings, while the majestic silverbacks sat lazily casting their watchful eyes over the scene. I am truly blessed to have seen and been a part of this amazing experience,” Michele said.

A former local bank manager, Douglas says the property is now mostly used as a holiday house – much like many of the properties in the area. During peak times of the year, families and holidaymakers flock to the region, which can often put pressure on septic tank systems that, in some cases, are old and failing. “I don’t think people realise how good a sewerage system is. I know the septic tanks are okay, but for the past 10 or 15 years I couldn’t understand why something wasn’t done about the sewerage because there are too many houses down there to be putting a septic tank in,” he added. “From a personal point of view, I think it’s a very, very big improvement.” Local residents with any questions about the new sewerage system or the early connection option are encouraged to visit the South East Water sewerage connection shop at 2449 Point Nepean Road (next to the Rye Hotel) or alternatively call 1800 720 613 or visit southeastwater.com.au/eco for more information read online www.mpmag.com.au

WINNING TIPSTER Councillor Bev Colomb talks all things Briars. Hello everyone, Once again time has gone quickly and here we are well into 2014. It’s certainly shaping up to be a busy one for Council and I’m sure also for all of you too. There are a lot of projects and events ahead for our favourite place, the Mornington Peninsula. As a Councillor for the Briars ward, along with Anne and Andrew, I am looking forward to seeing the community at upcoming ward and community meetings. These will be in different places in the ward to reach as many as possible. Our next one will be at the community hall in Mount Eliza on February 25th 2014 in the evening. Contact councillor. support@mornpen.vic.gov.au for more information. Towards the end of last year we caught up with our sporting clubs and groups and enjoyed the networking. We also caught up with our service groups and community groups. There are certainly a lot of good folk out there working within our community. This time of the year too we think often of our fire fighters and our life savers and the many hours they volunteer – a big thank you to them all. We have a big project addressing the laneways near Mornington Main Street kicking off with community consultation. This will include better lighting. Also the public space of Empire Mall will have a lift, discussion with traders is about to start. Works are progressing on the $8 million redevelopment of Mornington Civic Reserve. Earthworks have been completed, underground services and drainage installed and concrete slabs poured. Structural steel framework is currently being erected. David Collings Leisure Centre is being expanded to provide new and improved recreation and leisure programs at Civic Reserve. Mornington Tennis Club will relocate to their new clubrooms and outdoor courts. Mornington Youth Club will be accommodated in a new purpose built gymnastics hall. An expanded table tennis stadium has been designed for Mornington Peninsula Table Tennis Association. The existing entry foyer will be reconfigured to include an expanded program room, kiosk, administration offices, amenities, crèche and small gym room. Services infrastructure to the building is being upgraded and a new car park constructed. The next stage in the Mount Eliza streetscape works is starting soon and we are working with Rotary to create a fun space for children at Rotary Park. The chamber has been partnering with us to enhance the Village Green. Upcoming events and recent news is listed on the Council website www.mornpen.vic.gov.au. Contact the Briars Ward Councillors on 5950 1428 Catch up on facebook or check out our Council profiles on the Council website: mornpen.vic.gov.au Don’t forget to also check out the new Library website: ourlibrary.mornpen.vic.gov.au or download the Shire App. Best wishes for now: Councillor Bev Colomb

Deane Lester With the Mornington Cup upon us for another year, it was time to turn to Australia’s number 1 racing analyst Deane Lester to help us find a winner. The 45-year-old has developed a cult following through his work on Radio Sport National with his tips, followed more closely by more punters than any other tipster. What might surprise Lester’s fans is that becoming one of the country’s leading form analysts wasn’t always his dream job. A career in racing was always his preference, much to the dismay of his father, Bob, who wanted him to be a lawyer, just not specialising in form. Bob and Deane Lester’s mother, Sandra, were operating a stud farm when Deane was born and growing up around horses left the youngster with a yearning desire to one day become a top trainer. “I had a very good education but I just couldn’t get away from the racing,” said Lester, who was educated at the Peninsula School in Mt Eliza. “Even when I was five or six, I had a great interest in it. There was a time when I tried to get away from it. I played cricket and football and all those things, but I just kept coming back to the racing.” Sandra took Lester’s involvement to the next level when he was around 13 years old, by obtaining her trainer’s licence and Lester acted as virtual stable foreman to the small team in between school commitments. In September 1989, Cranbourne ‘clocker’ Graeme Schofield fell ill and was unable to continue doing the track notes for the Sporting Globe, The Truth and Radio Sport National’s former guise, Sport 927. Unable to find a replacement, the Sporting Globe took to asking Cranbourne trainers if they knew of anyone who would be suitable and Ken Keys suggested Lester. Shortly after, in the week of his 21st birthday, Lester started as the Cranbourne trackman. And that’s when things began to snowball. The year after starting his trackwork post, Lester started doing form comment for the Winning Post with South Australian racing his beat. He combined those positions with a bit of horse trading and helping out at the stables as much as he could until the mid1990s when he landed the gig as Sport 927’s No 2 mounting yard reporter behind Roy Higgins. Lester’s posts were generally far-flung country cup meetings but it didn’t prevent him from tipping the listeners into a winner and by 1998, he had graduated to a spot on the popular Saturday morning panel, a position he retains to this day. Lester is also part of the Correct Weight team that reviews the previous day’s racing on a Sunday morning and makes brief appearances on the breakfast show throughout the week. But unbeknown to many Victorian punters, Lester is heard even more often on Sydney’s Sky Sports Radio. In addition to joining Ron Dufficy and Terry Kennedy for an hour every Monday morning for Punters Post Mortem, Lester also provides a daily Victorian form preview.

Sydney isn’t his only regular interstate gig. He has been a Perth radio regular for longer than he has in his home state, having started in 1995, and provides a Victorian racing update, including the all-important Quaddie selections every Wednesday and Friday. He is also heard every Friday morning on Radio TAB in Queensland, previews the Melbourne meeting on New Zealand radio every Saturday morning and writes columns for the West Australian newspaper.

With the Mornington Cup in mind, Deane Lester gives us some key pointers for consideration when betting on a horse. Deane feels that barrier draws, race tempo, rider changes, class factors and track conditions are the integral factors to assess in every race. Barrier draws and race tempo are often reliant on eachother and the way a race sets up is determined by barrier draws. He looks for significant riding changes, i.e. apprentice to senior riders, out of form riders to in-form riders or significantly more aggressive riders taking the reins. He also looks for horses that are shifting sharply in class, either up or down. It is essential to make sure that you know what condition the track is in that you are planning to bet on. Deane places a huge emphasis on barrier draws. He is a great believer in doing speed maps that help to assess where the pressure is going to be applied from in a race. Barrier 1 is not always the best gate in a race and conversely barrier 16 isn’t a curse to certain horses if the race pace suits them. For Deane’s Mornington Cup tips, tune in to RSN 927am from 10am on Cup Day. Deane’s Daily Best Bet are available at www.rsn.com.au and for all of Deane’s selections on Victorian meetings, call Trackwatch on 1902 241 524 after 10am each raceday. Cost is $3.30 per minute, higher rates for mobiles apply, service provider Telads Pty Ltd. Follow Deane on Twitter - @defier1 fresh every month mornington PENINSULA MAGAZINE

Orchestra Victoria heads to Mornington for two days of summer sounds Local music lovers and students are in for a treat next month when Orchestra Victoria once again returns to Mornington. On February 25 & 26, approximately 50 local music students will come together for the annual On the mOVe workshop at the Peninsula Community Theatre to extend their ensemble playing and instrumental techniques under the guidance of Orchestra Victoria musicians and conductor Stephen Williams. This year students from Nossal High School, Padua College, Rosebud Secondary College, The Peninsula School, Toorak College and Woodleigh School, will participate with further school applications expected in the coming weeks. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Antonella Celi welcomed Orchestra Victoria back to the Peninsula: “Orchestra Victoria’s two-day Mornington and Rosebud Education Program is an exceptional opportunity for students to participate in master classes and for teachers to gain valuable professional development. The ‘On the mOVe’ program contributes so much to enriching the Peninsula’s local young musicians and the musical teaching sector.Last year’s community concert was inspiring. I encourage everyone to attend this year’s community concert to hear these amazing

local talents in action.” The workshop will culminate in a joint concert at 6.30pm on 26 February that will showcase students’ progress under Orchestra Victoria players’ mentorship. This is FREE to the public and no bookings are required. Last year’s showcase drew a large crowd who marveled at the standard of the Peninsula’s students as they played alongside the professional musicians of Orchestra Victoria. Featuring works by Henri Mancini, John Williams and Richard Wagner this is a fun filled, family friendly event and we encourage the Mornington community to come along and enjoy an uplifting evening of music. It’s definitely one event not to miss. Presented in association with Mornington Peninsula Shire, with the support of The Joan and Peter Clemenger Trust, The William Buckland Foundation, Arts Victoria and Orchestra Victoria’s Principal Regional Partner - Bendigo Bank. From the Cultural Planning Desk of Mornington Peninsula Shire Mornington Peninsula Shire is 720 square kilometres in area with 44 towns and villages with each community having distinct community groups, artistic and creative populations, interests, activities and events being enjoyed and celebrated. Often arts groups and artists have either a limited or no budget to promote events and activities, relying on word of mouth, placement in community sections of newspaper, flyers and posters in shop windows and in halls and with a hope that newspapers might include their editorials. Apart from encouraging artists and groups to consider marketing and communications campaigns early in project planning, the Shire’s arts and culture team believed it could assist through innovative and cooperative advertising strategies.

It’s Festival Hall, circa 1978, where crowds of screaming girls are lining up to see Sherbet and where my mum takes me to see my first crush, lead singer Daryl Braithwaite. Like all my friends, my room was strewn with Sherbet posters I had torn out of TV Week and my one and only Sherbet record would be played on the turntable over and over again. Some thirty odd years later and Daryl Braithwaite is still going strong. He has left the hazy days of Sherbet behind but still manages to do what he loves - making music with his latest album, Forever The Tourist, released last year and playing at Between The Bays this month. Often reported as an Australian icon, 64 year old Daryl says you should never be restricted by age, recently re-signing with Sony to release his new album which he started four decades ago. “I love singing and performing on stage more so than live recording, I still love the spontaneity of live gigs and I’ve heard from James Reyne that the Between The Bays event is a lot of fun,” said Daryl who has spent some time on the Peninsula surfing - his other great passion. “It’s just really important to keep passionate about what you do. I was lucky enough to have a great start with Sherbet in 1970. We were all guys just doing what we loved. When I started with Sherbet, it was that or surfing and the music was a lot of fun.” Daryl says keeping a straight head was easy for them in those days compared to the young artists of today. “When growing up, everyone goes through a crazy period,” said Daryl, who started with Sherbet at the age of 20. “But in relation to the band, we were able to keep a grip on it. I think it’s because of our personalities. “We knew what success was but also knew the other side of the coin. We were just excited about making music then and it was a lot simpler. It’s harder now for bands to have success in the music industry. “As each generation comes along, they have to reassess how they do things. For bands, it’s harder now to have success and also the record industry seemingly don’t play as big a part as they did in the 70’s, so young bands and their managers are

finding different ways to play to audiences on a world level and they are very smart about it. With pop music going for 50 or 60 years now, it constantly changes how to get your music out there.” When Daryl plays at Between The Bays, you will be able to feast your ears to all his hits - from the multi-platinum selling albums Edge and Rise through to his new single ‘Not Too Late’, when he will no doubt start a sing-along on the oval of Penbank School. “You will definitely hear a few old and new songs at the festival, one or two Sherbet songs and the rest mainly solo songs from Edge with some favourites from the new album,” said Daryl whose “Never Too Late” single could be said to be the philosophy by which he lives. “As you get older, you think you are restricted by age but it’s not true. I just love that attitude that it’s never too late when it comes to having a go at anything.” With a list of accomplishments a mile long, extensive Australian and international success, a plethora of hits including One Summer, As The Days Go By, and of course, The Horses, along with a brand new album release, Daryl is living proof that it’s never too late. A better way to buy diamonds!

Exciting times for Red Rejuvenation Skin Clinic

There is a new way to buy diamond jewellery on the Peninsula and the name is Diamond Coco! Owner Anthony Hansen is one of Australia’s leading diamond merchants and he says to expect prices around half that of a retail store!

With a fast growing customer base and great customer feedback this is one place you need to come and see. Located in the heart of Mornington and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Main Street, Red Rejuvenation Skin Clinic offers you exceptional treatments by our highly trained professional staff. Beautifully appointed rooms under one luxurious roof with state of the art equipment and serious skincare customised to your individual skin, no matter how concerned you are with your skin, we are committed to giving you results. Does your skin show your age? We strongly believe serious high end skincare should be accessible to everyone. We plan to improve and maintain skin quality from a range of only the best dermatological products with dermaviduals and Pevonia skin & body care. This month we are very excited to be introducing IPL and Laser hair removal and IPL Skin Rejuvenation for sun damage, freckles and red veins. Other products we have include Jane Iredale mineral makeup which not only looks good but nurtures your skin as well, our trained professional therapists can individually colour match your foundation and give you a complete guide on how to use your products.

Operating a little differently than most jewellers, Diamond Coco displays the bulk of its jewellery in the form of low cost prototypes that look and feel like the real thing only they are there to represent your finished piece. Once a suitable design is chosen you are then offered the choice of white gold, yellow gold, platinum or palladium depending on your budget or preferences. From there you are educated about the various diamond and gemstone qualities so that you are making an informed choice. Many remarking that they learn more about diamonds in 10 minutes than they ever did trolling the stores! Ultimately you will walk away having not only saved a great deal of money but just as importantly you get to be involved in the design process. To put the savings into perspective, Anthony points out several recent customer experiences. One was very close to paying $13,999 for a diamond engagement ring. At

Diamond Coco they paid just $7,560 for identical quality. Another was tempted by a sale price of $5,999 at another store for a pair of diamond stud earrings only to find much better quality at Diamond Coco for only $2,750. Anthony goes on to explain that these are not isolated examples, but rather regular client experiences. Despite the low prices Anthony is passionate about diamonds and refuses to sell inferior diamonds found in so many retail stores. As Anthony puts it, his diamonds are his business card to the world which is why over 80% of his business comes from repeat customers and referrals. If you are in the market for quality diamond jewellery then there really is no better place to shop than Diamond Coco. Customers could be forgiven for thinking they need to travel to the big smoke and track down so called wholesalers when in truth the best deals are at their front door. Give Anthony a call on 1300 230 430 and tell them the ‘Mornington Peninsula Magazine’ sent you! Diamond Coco is located at Suite 6 (Upper Level) 38A Main Street Mornington. Appointments can be made on 1300 230 430.

fashion health & beauty Team Barefoot stepping it up Consistency is the key to success As the Australian Triathlon season settles into its second half, Team Barefoot Age Group Squad are well into their final push towards the Melbourne Ironman Triathlon Asian Pacific Championships on March 23 starting at Frankston Pier. For those not familiar, the event consists of a 3.8km swim off Frankston Pier, 180km ride over two laps along Eastlink and culminating with a gruelling 42.2km marathon from Frankston Pier to Catani Gardens in St Kilda. Two thousand athletes from all over the world including some of the world’s best and fittest on the planet will be there racing head to head. “The professionals don’t just survive the event distance of 226km but actually race it going head to head with one another, sometimes with only seconds separating them at the finish line” said coach and manager, Stephen Foster. The Team Barefoot Junior Development Squad’s aim at the start of the season was to qualify all three members - Hamish Martin, Yoann Colins and Shane Strahan - for the Victorian Schools Triathlon Team and that’s exactly what they did with all three successfully making the team over the three qualifier races. The Australian Schools Triathlon Championships are in Bendigo from April 8-11 this year. “All three have done a great job applying themselves and showing that consistency is the key to success in all aspects of life” continued Foster. Team Barefoot Elite Team athletes are going great guns this

season with Grace Deveson currently leading the Gatorade Triathlon Series Open Female Elite and Nathan Buschkuehl and Nathan Barry holding second and third overall in the Men’s Open Elite. “They are all doing a fantastic job, especially Nathan Buschkuehl, who was Junior Elite Series Champion last year and has made a smooth transition to senior division this season.” As the sport continues to grow at a rate of knots,Team Barefoot is gradually expanding to cater for all levels of triathletes from beginner to professional and will soon bring on board a few more assistant coaches and new programs. They are affiliated with local club, Mornington Peninsula Triathlon Club, of which Stephen is a life member. Stephen Foster and long-time friend and team sponsor, Rob Licciardo of The Gallery Bar & Grill, catching up after training.

TEARS AND LUNCH BOXES - SURVIVING THE SCHOOL YEARS Finally the day has arrived and Peninsula parents share a sigh of relief as they send their little ones back to school. For some there will be tears as the inevitable milestone arrives when the little one leaves the nest to start school for the first time. This is often much harder for parents than it is for the children, as you see your baby dressed in their school uniform, with a school bag on their back and, of course, mandatory sun-safe hat. Whether you are sending your fiveyear-old to school for the first time or watching your soon-to-be teenager head out into the big world of secondary school, there is no doubt it’s a landmark in your family life. You wonder where those years went all of a sudden and wish you hadn’t spent so much time wanting them to grow up as you see it happening in front of your eyes. Stepping into a new school with teachers, books, uniforms, excursions, interviews and other school mums is a foreign experience for all of us.

( 38 The peninsula’s favourite funky SQUARE magazine

So here’s a few tips I have learnt along the way….

•H ave everything your child needs before the first day of school to ease their way into the first year. Children like to feel that they fit in and if they are missing an item, be it a book or part of the school uniform, it creates a rocky start. •B e on time. Punctuality is important for children and, as you will find, teachers as well. At primary schools, children will get a late pass which makes them stand out (the very thing they don’t like), and secondary is more severe on tardiness, often punished with a detention. • S pare some time to spend at school. You will not believe what a difference it makes to your child when you attend school for any reason. Watch their little chest puff up when you go to school to do the reading, help in the canteen or go to the school open days. With so many parents working, it’s harder to get to school events but any appearance is better than none. •P ack a healthy lunch. Of course children would much prefer junk food and, everything in moderation, but a lunch box full of unhealthy food will fresh every month

only make them stand out more. With a sandwich, rice cakes or roll, a small treat, drink bottle and fruit you can’t go wrong. • Develop a good rapport with your child’s teacher. Teachers actually appreciate when a parent takes an interest in their child’s education. You don’t have to just hand your child over to the system, and have every right to be part of your child’s school life. • Be aware that you WILL embarrass your child. No matter how cool we try to be, there will eventually be a time when we embarrass our children. Usually this starts in the late primary school years. Don’t worry. It’s not personal, just a child and parent’s initiation into the next part of the process - adolescence. Finally, to all those mums, make the most of it. Enjoy your free time now. You deserve it. If this is your only, or last child, to go off to school, crack a champers and celebrate the good job you have done so far. Start a new career, go to school yourself or embrace your freedom - even if it’s only from 9am till 3.15pm. - Melissa Hodge

Sarah’ s Style POLLen by hunterminx

A chic hand-painted sheath in 100% silk, this dress is perfect for race day. It is cool and practical to wear in hot weather, yet dazzles with a dramatic print in gorgeous colours. This is a winner with a simple hat, shoes and bag in a plain colour. Let the gorgeous dress be the star on the day. Morrison dress $215.

With the fabulous Mornington Cup on this month, it is the perfect day out in which to shine as a style star! Great accessories are key to dressing for the day, as we might already have a dress from the spring carnival, so all we have to do is top up with a gorgeous new bag and/or shoes. Or perhaps it is having a lovely new dress to wear that is a statement piece. Something in a beautiful fabric, print and colour. Something that not only will be a great dress to wear on the day remember, the weather is usually very warm - but also something that will become a favoured dress in our everyday summer wardrobe, both this year and beyond. Whilst it’s great to stand out in a fashion piece, we also must be comfortable, as it’s impossible to look fabulous if we are too hot or too cold, or in something too big or too small. Comfort is Queen! So think shoes that are both chic and comfortable, bags that are both pretty and practical, and a statement dress that is cool and classic. Good betting, have fun and enjoy!

DON’T END UP LIKE A PRUNE We all long for that healthy summer glow but, truth be told, in the warmer months, too much sun, chlorine and air-conditioning only leads to dry, lifeless skin. With a few helpful hints it is possible to save your skin this summer, and get that fabulous complexion we see in magazines. 1. Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is number one. Seems simple but it’s not always easy to do. Drink around eight glasses of water a day to keep your skin moisturised. 2. W ear sunscreen every time you are out in the sun, even when undercover. A tan is great but who wants leathery skin so make sure you continually top up the sunscreen to avoid skin damage. 3. A void the sun from 11am till 3pm. If at all possible stay out of the sun during these hottest hours of the day to avoid adverse reactions to your skin. 4. F ollow a skin routine. Even if you don’t normally have a set routine, summer is the time you need to start. Use a toner and moisturiser every day to replenish the lost moisture in your skin. 5. D rink less soft drink and alcohol. Aerated drinks and alcoholic beverages only dehydrate the skin and body more so remember to have them in moderation. 6. U se artificial tans. Whether its a tan in a can or a spray tan, using artificial tans is far better in the long term for your skin and they look great. 7. N ever get your face burnt. If you must get a sun tan, make sure you always protect your face as it will age much quicker with sun damage than the rest of your body. 8. K eep cool. Replenish your body on the inside with water, and use natural face masks and body masks to rehydrate from the outside. Natural yoghurt and cucumber offers great skin relief. FEBRUARY 2014 (27)

SOVEREIGN POINT GIVES BERTH TO A LUXURIOUS NEW OPPORTUNITY

Waterfront living on the Mornington Peninsula has never been this easy with house and land packages – each with a marina berth – selling for less than a million dollars. Thirty lots have been released at Sovereign Point, the only waterfront blocks currently available in the Martha Cove marina development on Safety Beach. Priced from just $499,000 for prime waterfront land and less than $1 million for land with a luxury house, the sites range in size from 697 to 920 square metres, each boasting harbour frontage of up to 22.5 metres and the title to a berth at your back door.

include a variety of styles from award-winning Latitude 37 Homes, including the single-storey, double-storey and split level homes. Homes are available with three, four or five bedrooms. Alternatively, buyers can design and build their own. “Sovereign Point is a unique offering that gives buyers the chance to enjoy waterfront living and all the high-end attractions for which the peninsula is famous, including world-class golf courses and wineries. And the city is less than an hour away on Peninsula Link,” Mr Carson said. Another attraction is the revamped Martha Cove Café & Store, where catering supremo Peter Rowland has launched his latest

enterprise to offer the best of the region’s renowned food, wine and coffee. Martha Cove is a 94-hectare residential marina development, being overseen by a unique alliance between three key stakeholders – development company Three Pillars, and receivers and managers KordaMentha and PPB Advisory. When completed, it will include around 1100 residential dwellings, 750 marina berths, a commercial precinct and an aged care facility. Sovereign Point’s waterfront location and style is showcased now on site with the opening of the Spinnaker Display Home.

The sale is being managed by PPB Advisory, the receivers and managers for waterfront land at Martha Cove in conjunction with Foxwood Innovative Property Solutions. “Sovereign Point gives people a rare opportunity to build their dream architecturally designed home in a masterplanned waterfront community with parks, cycle paths and walkways,” the Chairman of Partners at PPB Advisory, Ian Carson, said. “You can have it all for less than $1 million.”

The architecturally designed home will feature four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, two living areas, a study, an alfresco dining area, a two-door garage, plus a 13.6-metre marina berth. It includes a spacious alfresco area with views to the pool and marina. The Sovereign Point, Martha Cove sales office is located within the Martha Cove Café & Store at the corner of Anchorage Avenue and Harbourside Esplanade, Safety Beach. The Sovereign Point display home is located at Lot 676, Sovereign Point, Safety Beach. Visit www.marthacove. com.au or ring Jules Alexander at Foxwood on 0401 255 555.

Thirty lots have been released at Sovereign Point, the only waterfront blocks currently available in the Martha Cove marina development on Safety Beach. Selling agent Jules Alexander from Foxwood Innovative Property Solutions expects strong interest from buyers with each site at Sovereign Point boasting harbour frontage of up to 22.5 metres and a berth lot entitlement. “When people look for marina berths there are several things they must consider and Sovereign Point ticks all the boxes,” Ms Alexander said. “Firstly, always look for possible power and water connections to the berth,” she said. “It’s not safe or practical to run extension cords across large distances if you don’t have power near your boat.” Onsite fuel supply is also important, with Martha Cove the only site on the peninsula where boats don’t have to leave the water to refuel. “Make sure your berth is well protected from the weather. Your boat represents a significant investment and should not be

MT ELIZA

The Eyes have it Marcus Bland is anything but. With over thirty years’ experience in the spectacle making trade, this craftsman who gained his English qualifications while working in Oxford Street London, loves to smile, go roller blading and ride motor bikes. Not your typical eyewear specialist perhaps, but certainly one who focuses on finding the perfect fit, style and optimum comfort for each ‘unique’ client. Marcus knows spectacle construction inside out. His eyewear salon, which proudly hangs a chalk board out front with quirky lines which all relate to smiling on it, is something different. ‘Keep it in place, the smile on your face’, is one of his favourites,

and smile is what you’ll do when you enter this Davies Ave store because Marcus takes the time and care for you. There are no time constraints and advice is free when you come into Mt Eliza Optical. Attention to fit is of supreme importance. (There will be no slipping down the nose or off the ears while smiling with a pair of specs from the spectacle specialists). Here you’ll find high end, high quality European frames and perfectly crafted lenses while the Couta Boat inspired décor invites you in and makes you want to stay. 2014 sees the introduction of the Mt Eliza Optical package. Dental Care Mt Eliza The journey of dental health is one that culminates in our entire overall wellbeing. Health dentistry is all about understanding why problems happen in the first place and then providing the correct treatment to improve them. Dr Scott Robertson has lived locally since 1975 and has operated a practice in Mt Eliza since 1989. His aim is simple – to provide clear advice and quality health dentistry answering simply the questions that all patients ask – • Will it hurt? • How much will it cost? • Is it worth it? The decision making process is ultimately controlled by

A great smile please! BEFORE

the patient – after the provision of effective, efficient and accurate advice involving a written estimate and clear direction regarding the options available. Complex dentistry must be broken into simple parts in order to obtain the best possible results. Choices in dentistry must be balanced with risks and benefits – where the dental professional’s expert knowledge is provided in a way that the patient can fully understand in order for the correct choices to be made. Dental Care Mt Eliza is a hands on service that supports and co-ordinates the journey to dental health. The team will show you exactly what is possible with intraoral cameras and photography and examples to make it easier to understand proposed treatments. Treatment co-ordinator, Robyn Maini, has a wealth of experience in demystifying dentistry and costs and written estimates are always provided. Evening appointments are also available. Changing Moves

February 21st 2014 could be the first day of the rest of your life. Anna Jorgensen has the clue; her fresh teacher training course in Hatha Yoga (which is a physical style of yoga) at The Yoga House in Ranelagh Drive. Want to know more? Anna Talks; ‘This course is all about personal development and is for people who currently practice yoga. Yoga provides a guide-line for personal growth, focussing on the connection between mental and physical strength which ultimately leads to a holistic way of living where the mind, body and soul are nurtured and strengthened’. PLUS you get a new career as a fully qualified yoga teacher while morphing into a better, stronger version of yourself. Sounds too good to be true! Anna has been practicing yoga since she was a teenager and running the two hundred hour Teacher Training Course for the last two years. Many of her previous graduates have gone on to teach with The Yoga House at their two studios. All have changed their lives for the better. Look out for the exiting new classes just launched; a more spiritually based class Healing with Yoga and Reiki on Tuesdays and the Sunday Sanctuary which is a gentle yoga practice with long guided meditation (obviously on Sundays!) in term one. These classes are ideal for all ability levels because all TYH teachers work with each individual to achieve their ideal outcome. And guys, you have not been forgotten! Term two sees a new ‘Less Fluff, More Stuff’ class for the boys where challenge is the operative word. So there’s absolutely no excuse not to get moving in 2014; whether into a new physically and mentally rewarding career or into a more centred, fitter and fabulous you – at The Yoga House.

Harba Oyster Bar and Grill never stops. Now open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, this Mornington Peninsula institution is well known for letting the good times roll with live music, delicious restaurant quality menus – specialising in seafood, steak and sizzling grills - plus cocktails that pack a punch. It’s all about feeling good at Harba whether you’re catching a bite at the restaurant downstairs or partying on in the Sunset Lounge and restaurant up above. Live music and comedy nights get the groove going, while the open deck upstairs has views to die for. Trivia comes to Morning-town on Thursday nights at Harba where five dollars will get you in. First and second prizes are available plus plenty of give-aways throughout the evening. (Harba proudly sponsors Variety, The Children’s Charity with this event). Live music from five on Sundays wraps up the weekend. Now let’s talk food. Harba Oyster Bar and Grill knows seafood. Tuck into a dozen (or more!) of your favourite zinc and iron fuelled oysters. Natural, Kilpatrick, chorizo, mango salsa or Vietnamese style will do the trick. For seafood seekers, look no further than wonderful Wednesdays where ordering Harba’s famous seafood platter for two gets you a free bottle of wine from their fabulous Rothbury range. Fresh and mouth-watering local, Harba’s seafood (and wine!) is second to none. Try a Porterhouse or Wagyu steak on Tuesdays, served up with a side of salad and chips of mashed potato and vegetables – bookings essential. A-la-Carte lunch (smoked salmon flatbread with citrus dill cream and fried baby capers and sliced fennel) and dinner (calamari dusted with salt and pepper flour, harissa aioli and roquette) menus cover all tastes. And remember – Harba is available for private hire for engagements/weddings, birthdays and any old celebration. That’s what they do best; make sure you have the best time. Bucket Sunday at The Rocks The Rocks restaurant, overlooking Mornington Harbor, is perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner at this time of the year. Now that the ‘high summer’ visitors have returned to the city, we can once again enjoy the pleasure of having our own backyard, a little more ‘just for us’. Something special to add to your bucket-list, The Rocks has Bucket Sundays each week from 4pm.

FEBRUARY 2014 (27)

Laze away on the shady deck, overlooking the harbour, and enjoy a bucket of mussels for $18, a bucket of tiger prawns for $28, a bucket of fish & chips for $26 and a bucket of Coronas for $28. The mussels arrive fabulously fresh, straight from the boat at the pier, thanks to Peter Lillie at Bay Sea Farms. Seats are now very limited for this year’s Valentine’s Day dinner, so call now or you could be disappointed. The romantic three course menu

begins with a complimentary flute of French champagne which is a superb ‘taster’ for the seafood platter which presents an array of more than eight varieties of crustaceans and fresh fish. The main course is an 18-hour slowbraised lamb shoulder, accompanied by a traditional Greek salad using Main Ridge marinated fetta. An assiette of house-made sweets follows for dessert, cost is $105pp. Visit The Rocks website for more menu details at therocksmornington. com.au or phone 5973 5599

A New Lease of Life for a Mornington Peninsula Icon Local couple Robert and Analou Lawson have taken on the task of re-inventing Main Ridge’s Pig and Whistle Tavern. After purchasing the freehold ownership mid 2013 – which includes 30 acres of property and the business Bayview Estate Winery – their grand plan is to restore the iconic English style tavern to its former glory. Located just five minutes from the top of Arthurs Seat, The Pig and Whistle is set amongst picturesque gardens with a spectacular view overlooking Port Phillip Bay. The venue has indoor seating near an open fire for winter dining and outdoor seating for the warmer months. Open daily for lunch and dinner the menu features hearty pub style meals, an extensive wine list and a famous range of domestic and imported beers. While extensive renovations are planned for the future, The Lawsons intend to retain the original character, warm atmosphere and eclectic collections that have built the reputation of the property. “We will continue serving quality, affordable food and provide friendly service with a smile.” Along with building expansion and landscaping, the changes include a revamp of the Bayview Estate Winery – which re opened in December 2013 for wine sales, tastings and group bookings – and an increase in the services offered to locals and tourists. “We are open 365 days a year and have the space and facilities to cater for groups, to host weddings and be a place for community functions and meetings.”

The Food With new owners, comes a new menu! Still serving the hearty pub meals it is famous for, the menu features house-made pies, fresh seafood, juicy steaks and decadent desserts with vegetarian, gluten free and childrens’ meals available. Also choose from an extensive range of wines and over 25 different beers (including 12 international). There is something to suit everyones tastes with indoor and outdoor seating available.

CHILL OUT AT THE GALLERY BAR GRILL

New Licciardo’s Gallery Bar Grill

a runaway success

The Gallery Bar and Grill is all abuzz this summer. Treat your senses with their light, fresh and creative menu, or try one of the classics Rob Licciardo is famous for. New to the Gallery Bar and Grill is the latest city music, every weekend, under the shade of the massive oak tree. Diners can sit back in the cocktail bar or enjoy fine dining in the brasserie. Outside on the deck, chill out with some tapa’s and wine while you groove to music under that 100 year old oak tree.

Rob Licciardo with Raymond Blanc and David Moore from The Restaurant

Chef Rob Licciardo’s influence is obvious, boasting the latest trends in food and music from his recent stint in the UK. For the past three years Rob has been cultivating his craft in the UK, with successful chefs Raymond Blanc, JJ Goodman and Aussie export Shane Osborn. Licciardo was head chef opening Blanc & Goodman’s London Cocktail Club. He was also head chef at The Moat located in Port Isaac, Cornwall and frequently featured in the UK TV series Doc Martin. After returning to Australia Licciardo decided he wanted to bring a city-feel to Mount Eliza. “I’ve lived in Mount Eliza all my life,” Licciardo explains, “It’s a great place to be. I love surfing, horse riding and competing in triathlons. I just wanted to give this place a fresh modern look; the sophistication of London nestled amongst the beauty of Mount Eliza.” Start the night at the gallery bar and grill with some decadent, price-friendly cocktails or choose from the extensive wine list, then head over to the restaurant where your tastebuds will be titillated. Perhaps you could start off with raw yellow kingfish with accents of lime, green chilli and coconut cream. Licciardo recommends the flamed grilled duck with blackberry sauce and celeriac purée for mains. Then you could finish off with a chocolate marshmallow soufflé with homemade vanilla bean ice cream. Tapa’s are available, for those who enjoy grazing and sharing. Paella can be ordered for groups who will enjoy the combination of flavours only found in this classic Spanish dish. And if you are looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion, the gallery bar and grill has an expansive menu of delicious

summer tunes to groove to finger food. They can now cater for up to 150 for weddings or celebrations. Perfect for large or small gatherings, business and school groups welcome. Licciardo describes the warm atmosphere: “This place is definitely friendly, everyone feels welcome.” Licciardo isn’t afraid of a slightly younger crowd, “I love the youth, they bring in energy and I tap into that. This Summer we are introducing the latest city style live music.” Trying to create harmony in his food is what Licciardo enjoys most by using the freshest ingredients. “I want to create flavours which will heighten a person’s tastebuds.” Come in for lunch or dinner from Wednesday onwards; breakfast is offered on Saturdays and Sundays; or if you’re in a rush, order takeaway food and a coffee from the kiosk. Light up your home .. and you’ll light up your life !!

Light is a very powerful tool to create the illusion of space in our homes. New-build homes often have wonderfully large windows, through which floods natural daylight. However, owners of older homes with small windows need to maximise natural sunlight, and some tricks for this include placing mirrors opposite windows, carefully selecting paint with high ‘light reflective value’ and, where possible, using polished floorboards and gloss surfaces to bounce off light into the room.

Top Interior Designers use three basic layers of lighting:

Light is very important to our general wellbeing, stimulating our central nervous system and affecting melatonin, the hormone which regulates sleep. When we’re deprived of light, we can become depressed and lethargic.

Although not possible to fully replicate sunlight, downlights provide clean working light close to natural daylight, which is ideal in active areas and distributes an even flow throughout the home.

Paint colours such as red, orange, black and brown will absorb light, whereas pale green, blue and lilac will bounce light around walls, making rooms appear larger, and a skylight will let in twice as much light as a window of the same size.

So whether your lighting challenges are natural or artificial, embrace the challenge and spread some light ... you’ll be glad you did!

General Lighting in the centre of the room which can be updated, if necessary, using rods of directional lighting to spotlight certain areas; Accent Lighting creates mood and atmosphere, whether these be wall lights, table lamps or candles; and Task Lighting, which is used for specific purposes, such as lamps for reading, desk lights for study, and under-cabinet lighting in kitchens.

DECOR HOME GARDEN THINK LESS WASTE is a community behavior change, engagement and communications project that aims to encourage the Mornington Peninsula community to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill… About Think Less Waste Think Less - know your waste, reduce your waste is a conversation about waste with the Mornington Peninsula community. It offers practical tips and hints and builds conversation among residents and visitors to the Mornington Peninsula to inspire a reduction in the amount of valuable material thrown into rubbish bins every week. In 2013, a look inside the rubbish and recycling bins on the Mornington Peninsula revealed far too much valuable material in our rubbish bins. • There was rubbish in bins that could have been recycled • Recyclables were tied up in plastic bags (which prevents them from being sorted at the recycling facility) • And an abundance of edible food and other organic material was headed for landfill via rubbish bins.

This isn’t only wasteful - it also means our landfill is filling up faster than it needs to. Samantha Ackland, Education Officer for Peninsula Zero Waste said: “Earlier this year, Council conducted a random audit of waste bins on the Peninsula. We found that people were putting recyclables into their garbage bins, plastic bags in recycling bins and perfectly edible food straight into the garbage. “We developed the Think Less Waste (know your waste, reduce your waste) program in response to this to give our community the right information, advice and tools needed to ensure we are recovering as many resources as possible and that we minimise what gets sent to landfill. “One aim of the program is to encourage residents and holidaymakers to reduce their food waste. They can do this by using a shopping list to avoid buying too much food, storing food and leftovers correctly, using up all leftovers in new meals, and if there’s something they can’t use in time, give it to a neighbour or friend who can use it. We don’t want to send good food to landfill.” Think Less Waste representatives will be at forthcoming local markets and events and will provide information through Mornington

Peninsula Magazine and other local publications over the next few months. They will be talking about the four key elements of ‘know your waste, reduce your waste’, that includes smart shopping, recycling right, making the most of food and leaving less for the rubbish bin. The Think Less Waste challenge will commence in March, when 200 homes will get the chance to be part of a tailored, practical waste-in-the-home program complete with incentives. For further
