We watch the station wagon groan away. It’s the quintessential surfing snapshot and one that hasn’t changed throughout the ages. Still looks the same. Boards in the back, their tips peeking through the top of the rear window like a sideways fibreglass smile beside the P plater sign. “There’s always boards in the back,” says Dani. “It’s all he does. Surf and hang out with mates. That’s about it.” We are talking about her son Jett Dickinson - the 15-year-old Saint Andrews board rider with shoulder-length dark blonde hair and not a care in the world.

Toorak College celebrates National and State sporting success, and congratulate our very talented students. Some individual achievements include Emily Hamilton-Smith in Year 11, who captained the Victorian Under 15 Hockey team to win their first national trophy at the recent Australian Women’s Championship in Sydney. Sophie Jackson, also in Year 11, competed at the Victorian State Sailing Championships and placed first in the 420 class, and Year 9 student Holly Garac won a Gold Medal for high jump at the National Athletics Championships. After months of training, nine Toorak Aerobics teams competed at the Schoolaerobics Preliminary Finals in Geelong recently. Our results were outstanding with eight teams qualifying for the State Finals in June. The Toorak College Equestrian team also achieved great results, winning the Equestrian Victoria Championships at Werribee during the holidays, with 22 riders competing in the event. The Toorak team also won Round 2 of the ISJ Show Jumping series. There are so many benefits to participating in regular physical activity; it can uplift your mood, give you more energy and help to maintain good health. We offer our students a wide range of sporting opportunities, and encourage them to explore leadership, teamwork, responsibility, risk taking and commitment while enjoying the health benefits from regular physical activity. Our Senior School girls participate in the Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) program, of which Toorak College is a foundation member; it is the leading provider of sport to independent girls’ schools. Toorak College provides so many opportunities for students to find their passion. There is a sport or activity for everyone, it is about giving it a go, trying new things, making new friends and finding the activity that works for you. Putting a Value on Childhood – Early Childhood Education at Minimbah As adults, many of us lament the fact that our children don’t have the same opportunities to play, explore and learn that we perhaps did. We mourn that safety concerns, perceived and real, have torpedoed these impromptu learning experiences where independence, resilience, leadership and communication skills flourish.

Fun at the creek happens throughout the year. Rain, hail, or shine.

In response to this, and influenced by the Forest Schools’ approach used in many Scandinavian countries, the Early Childhood Centre at our Minimbah Campus established its ‘Creek’ Program in 2012. Five years on, the four-year-old ECC students from Minimbah spend their Thursdays outdoors at the ‘Minimbah Creek’. Rain, hail or shine, students engage in those activities their mums and dads did, and the learning outcomes are remarkable. The children thought they were just playing but they were learning such an incredible amount. It was tactile learning, learning by trial and error, directed and self-directed learning. Jodie A – Parent Such was the success of the ECC Creek Program that Foundation (Prep), Year 1 and Year 2 students now spend their Wednesdays outside the classroom. Their ‘Discovery Day’ programs set a different learning and curriculum focus each term and draw on the students’ ‘discoveries’ at Frankston beach and along the Sweetwater Creek trail. By putting a value on the educational and social importance of play and discovery – by letting children be children – we are able to develop individual learning programs that both challenge and engage. And it all begins in our Friday three-year-old program. This full-day program is creative. It is progressive. It is a broad palette of experiential and enquiry-based programs that combine to create a fun and engaging environment, sowing the seeds for a lifetime love of learning. Top of the class If you’re looking at Tyler Wilsmore’s physique and expecting to read about a 10-year journey, you’ll be mistaken. But don’t worry, the judges thought the same and were stunned to see such abdominal definition in a novice at his first competition. Tyler, a teacher at a local peninsula school, recalls them saying: “We can’t believe you’re a newbie – you have world class physique.” Tyler competed at the 2017 ANB Melbourne Titles on May 13, exactly one year after beginning his training. Taking home first place in the Men’s Fitness Model category and second in the Men’s Fitness Model Novice category, he remains in disbelief but is taking it in his stride. This part-time carer (for his mum) and PE teacher is off to the World Competition UFE World Fitness Model Championships in Canada in November 11 and 12. If he places in the top three for his categories he’ll receive a pro card that recognises him as a professional fitness model. Mornington Peninsula Magazine asked Tyler how the win was sinking in. “There’s been a lot of attention, which is amazing. The judges warned me that this would happen but advised me to stay humble and grounded. I’m just an average guy who likes going to the gym.”

BY KATE SEARS

Witnessing first-hand his parents’ health issues and losing sight of his own health after a relationship breakdown, Tyler decided to get back on track and become as healthy as he could. Despite the judges saying he must be “genetically lucky”, his diet and exercise regime is far from effortless. There’s no calorie counting or macronutrient tracking in sight; instead he focuses on consuming organic food for his six to seven meals a day, and carb cycling. That old wives’ tale that if you eat your vegetables you’ll grow up to be big and strong? Well, a kilo of organic vegetables a day is keeping Tyler at the top of his game. Karim El Barche, director of Discovery Health and Fitness in Cheltenham, posted a request for participants to join a 12-week transformation program; Tyler signed up and started the very next day with his new trainer. Fast forward 12 months, and Karim is now his coach and friend. On stage with a sub 5 per cent body fat, he couldn’t have been prouder of himself. Tyler appreciates the support of his friends, colleagues and family, and the congratulations he’s received from his students has also been a major highlight for the quiet achiever. And his motto? “Hard work affords much respect.”

Scholars to share their stories Every year TOPSA, Peninsula Grammar’s alumni, organise a breakfast and invite the community to join them. At this year’s breakfast, to be held at Peninsula Grammar on July 20, TOPSA has brought back a number of Peninsula Grammar scholars to share their stories. Five impressive young women who followed different pathways and found their passion will talk about where they are now and how they got there.

The guest speakers include Lauren Wood from the Class of 2006 who is looking forward to sharing her story about her career in a male-dominated industry. A sports journalist for the Herald Sun, Lauren loves where she is now. “I really enjoyed being involved in as much as I could at Peninsula – I loved the sport and music programs,” she says fondly. “I went on to study Business and Commerce as well as Journalism, and as a footy and general-sport lover, I now have a dream job that has already provided many highlights.” When asked what advice she might give to today’s Peninsula Grammar students, she has some wise words. “Soak it all in and engage in as many of the programs that Peninsula has to offer,” she said. “Since leaving school, I have realised how lucky I was to have so many different experiences that helped me develop into a well-rounded person. Put yourself out there - you never know what will come of anything.” Another guest speaker, Caitlin Miers from the Class of 2010, had a slightly different pathway. Cait is a Surf, Fashion and Lifestyle Photographer based here on the Mornington Peninsula. She started a Sports Science degree and then moved to a Bachelor of Photography at Melbourne’s RMIT University which she completed in 2014. Cait has since been freelancing for major brands including Roxy and Lululemon and has travelled to work in all corners of the globe including Biarritz, The Maldives, LA, Bali and Japan. Cait also has some valuable advice for the Class of 2017 and beyond. “I would

just say, you have time. You have time to go to uni, try a course, not like it, switch courses, go travelling and come back to it later on, or don’t come back to it! Just do what makes you happy,” she said. “It’s ok to change and do what you love!” Other guest speakers include musician Chloe Smith from the Class of 2011, who has studied music and teaching since leaving Peninsula Grammar and released an independent single and an EP. Maddie Featherby, Class of 2009, will also join the panel. Maddie studied Media majoring in film and cinema and also studied at NIDA and has been able to combine work and her love of musical theatre, winning one of the main roles in the upcoming production of Paris. As a more recent graduate Alexandra Karamesinis, from the Class of 2016, will appear on the panel providing some perspective on life so far after school.

Cashmere is soft, sexy and seductively subtle. The finest cashmere is crafted from long filament fibres of the grazing goats of Mongolia – now that’s something to sink your body into like a velvet second skin. Vibrant and versatile, this delicious finest of fine wool wants its wearer to feel free, warm and wonderfully luxe. Local luscious cashmere clothing company Mia Fratino wants its cashmere companions to fall in love with its anti ‘fast fashion’ rebellious side and join a ‘Slow Fashion Revolution’ where longevity lounges in the arms of shape, form and beauty. Designer Amy Jones of Merino Snug family heritage explains. “Our easy to wear range is 100% Mongolian cashmere and is carefully constructed to become even more beautiful as it wears. Mia Fratino’s mission is to support a more mindful appreciation of quality and to encourage long life expectancy. They are made to last. We don’t follow fashion trends or seasons, but focus on small production runs so our stockists receive new garments every four to six weeks. No excess bulk production means no landfill.” Amy and her business partner director Tim

Fitzpatrick began Mia Fratino (meaning ‘my sister’ in Esperanto) with the aim of producing divine knitwear for forward thinking and anti-disposable fashion advocates. A donation from every purchase goes to the Mia Fratino Foundation in Sri Lanka, which is a microfinance system funding the training of women in basic skills to help break the poverty trap. The Foundation prides itself on empowering women through financial independence. Mia Fratino knitwear is produced in its own factory in Sri Lanka with 100% diligence to ethical production. Searching through the rack of carefully crafted cuts and sumptuous design selections in the Mia Fratino studio in Mornington, one can’t help but feel like melting beneath all that cashmere goodness. It’s true, winter never looked so warm, inviting and well – fiercely feminine. “We provide a care kit with each of our garments so our clients know how to look after their cashmere too,” says Amy. Welcome to the faces behind the Mornington Peninsula’s next big destination in the making – Jetty Road Brewery. Peninsula born and bred boys Grant Rodgers and Blake Bowden, both aged 28, are the faces of a consortium which is steaming ahead with plans for a craft brewery in Dromana’s industrial estate and boy oh boy, it’s going to be a cracker. The group already have their own wholesale beer (it’s called the Jetty Road Pale Ale), the building, a business plan and a huge dose of patience (it took six years just to find the right site). They also have a planning permit and a vast amount of collective experience in the industry. It’s a refreshingly local venture and at the heart of it all are two great mates who love a great craft beer. Directors Grant and Blake explain: “We’re family friends, we went

( 18

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

to the same primary and high schools and we always talked about opening a pub. Instead, we decided to open a brewery.” Their resolve strengthened after attending Oktoberfest together and they dipped their toes into commercial brewing late last year. “We’ve done 15 years of home brewing but our first commercial beer (released October 2016) took off and we’ve sold out twice,” Grant, an accountant, continues. The boys started ‘gypsie brewing’ at Mornington Peninsula Brewery (it’s a supportive industry around here, this craft brewing) and are now brewing twice a month at a bigger venue. As they show Mornington Peninsula Magazine around their (future) brewery site in Dromana, it’s clear there’s a lot of work to be done. They have, however, completed the commercial kitchen and it’s available for rent 24/7 while Grant and Blake work on the brewery approvals and fit-out, the beer hall, functions space and more. In the meantime, Jetty Road Pale Ale is soaring in popularity and the take-up from local venues is so impressive that namedropping is a must. You can find the boys’

beer at Portsea Hotel, Flinders Hotel, Casa de Playa in Mornington, Mr Pauls, Rosebud Hotel, GPO Hotel, Barn & Co in Balnarring, The Long Table in Red Hill South, Hop Temple in Ballarat, Southside Social Frankston, Freddie Wimpoles in St Kilda and the list goes on. And the origins of the name Jetty Road Brewery? It’s named after Jetty Rd, Dromana, where it all started. “We started brewing on a residential street in Dromana so we called ourselves The Jetty Road Crew,” Blake explains. The Jetty Road Brewery vision is a “cool venue” that includes a commercial brewery, commercial kitchen, beer hall, functions space and children’s play area. “We want people to walk in here and say, ‘oh wow, this is where I want to stay’ and the kids can play too,” Grant says. Watch this space because these boys have plenty of announcements to come. For now, you can enjoy this local pale ale at the venues mentioned; the boys are working on their second beer; and you can hire their brand new commercial kitchen now. More at jettyroad. com.au

ROONG SAISOMBAT - A Touch of Finesse BY ANDREA KELLETT

Roong Saisombat is making her mark in Peninsula culinary circles. She’s head chef at Commonfolk Coffee Company in Mornington, executive chef at Finesse Catering Group (a Peninsula catering company, launched last year) and she’s the Soar Collective Woman of the Year. She even has a salad named after her! Mornington Peninsula Magazine caught up with Roong as she prepares to host a string of events over the winter and works on plans for her pop-up restaurant called Naturally Thai by chef Roong.

traditional Thai food and I’m looking for a ‘pop-up’ space to do a Thai pop-up. Q: You obviously thrive on being busy? A: I love being busy. If there’s nothing going on at night – no functions – we sit down and talk about food. I love cooking. I think I’m addicted to food (she laughs). I will see some flower and think, “What can we do with that? Can we put it in this salad?”

Q: What are you up to now? A: I am still working at Commonfolk with Sam Keck as head chef and building my catering company Finesse Catering Group with my husband, chef Brad Holtz, and my sister who is our pastry chef. I’m doing Thai cooking classes for people who want to learn how to cook

Q: Tell us more about your your plans for the winter and spring A: Last year through Finesse we started a roaming restaurant called ‘Speak Easy’ dining. We team up with different wineries and local artists and take over interesting spaces on the Peninsula (more at finessecateringgroup.com.au/speak-easy) Upcoming events are planned for Friday, June 23, at The Studio & Co in Hastings, where we will cook tuna on freshly blown glass for the first course. Sunday, July 16, we are at Tanglewood Estate where we are teaming up with Mornington Peninsula Brewery and a few other locals to host a long lunch. And plans are being laid for a ‘live art meets food’ showcase at The Nook Gallery in Mornington. Q: You are the Soar Collective Woman of the Year. How does that feel? A: It’s made me feel like I want to work harder! You don’t think you’re going to get an award. Sam (her boss at Commonfolk) named a salad after me when I won it. It used to be called The Best Salad Ever then when I won the SOAR award he changed it to The SOAR Collective Salad of The Year! Q: What drives you?

Brodie Harper is a natural ambassador for the Mornington Peninsula. The high profile television presenter has travelled extensively with Channel Nine’s travel and lifestyle show ‘Postcards’ and yet, there’s no place like home. “I’ll never move away, ever!” the Peninsula born and bred woman, presenter, model, mother and local resident declares during an interview with Mornington Peninsula Magazine. Brodie is speaking ahead of her role as MC for the 7th annual Children of Ghana Charity Ball, to be held at the Frankston Arts Centre on June 17. The gala night, founded and organised by locals Tony and Cheryl Carter seven years ago, has become a major event on the Mornington Peninsula’s social calendar – it’s a chance to glam up without having to travel to the city, and it’s for a charitable cause. This will be Brodie’s third appearance at the ball and her second in the role of MC. She explains: “This came about because I’m an ambassador for Mercedes Benz Mornington and they have always done a lot with (organiser) Cheryl and Children of Ghana in the past. Living on the Peninsula, it’s easy for me to attend and I like to try and get behind local charities.” Brodie is many things, including mum to young daughter Jessica, so it was a “no brainer” when she was approached to MC a glamorous local event that raises funds to provide basic necessities for orphans and children living in poverty in Ghana. “It saddens me that children don’t have the opportunities that they should in life. I try to always back these types of events,” she explains. On a lighter note (the question has to be asked) has she sorted out her all-important ball dress yet? “No, I wish!” she laughs, admitting that’s a decision that requires careful thought a little closer to the event. When asked how she would describe the ball for those thinking of dipping their toes, or high heels for that matter, in for the first time, her Peninsula pride shines again: “It’s such a fun night and it’s great to see all the locals getting behind it. They get a great crowd. There aren’t a lot of events like this on the Peninsula and it’s such a good cause,” she says. The 7th annual Children of Ghana Charity Ball is on June 17, 6.30pm, at the Frankston Arts Centre. Tickets include a four-course meal, a start-up drink package followed by drinks at bar prices, pre-dinner entertainment, auctions, raffles and BIG CITY BEAT - one of Australia’s favourite show bands. For last-minute ticket enquiries, call Cheryl on 0400 516 265.

John Waters is heading to the Frankston Arts Centre with his one man show Lennon: Through a Glass Onion and the word on the street is it’s a ripper! This theatrical experience that encapsulates the man and musician that was John Lennon has been touring since 1992 and is now in its third incarnation. When I spoke with Mr Waters, he was adamant that his love affair with the great (Liverpudlian) ‘Scouse’ accented Beatle was still raging as intensely as it was when the show was first conceived. His collaboration with cowriter and musician Stewart D’Arrietta all those years back has stood the test of time and audiences still can’t get enough. Sure, luck played a part – Lennon had only been dead 12 years and the world-wide grieving process was still palpable, but the combination of the masterly theatrical Waters and the musicianship of D’Arrietta was spot on. But let’s go back… John Waters began performing as a musician in London before he headed to Australia in 1968 as a 20-year-old. Decades later and with a bevy of film, television and theatrical performances beneath his belt (think 20 years on Playschool, stints on Rush, The D-Generation, All the Rivers Run, All Saints, Offspring and the ABC’s Rake), he still sounds just as mellow as he did when I had a bit part in the mini-series Nancy Wake and I had to play dead beneath him (and yes, those eyes are as blue as the Port Phillip Bay sea that inspires you and me). This is a performer who can sing, dance and play a mean guitar. He’s in a rock opera in Melbourne in July, co-writing another opera and there’s always the possibility of JUNE 2017 (67)

directing because he’s “had his fill of playing dashing heroes”. He’s also just wrapped up a performance in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Jonathon Biggins’ Talk where he played a radio talk show host. This gentleman is a versatile chameleon and a showman who inhabits each character and brings them to their knees.

“It’s just what I do. I don’t get tired of it. I’m most comfortable when I’m working and giving my all. I love the intimate setting of the Lennon show. It’s an intense performance and Lennon was a troubled man, but he spoke to me. Told me that I didn’t have to do what others told me to do.” “Rolls change as you grow older,” he continues, “and the Lennon show has changed too. We only had a one week booking at the Tilbury Hotel in Woolloomooloo when we began. 25 years later – who would of thought?” (The show has been performed in the UK, Canada, USA, NZ and Australia.) “I’m looking forward to these regional performances. Aussie audiences are relaxed.” I ask him if he ever gets any time to do just that? “We have a place in the Southern Highlands of NSW and I have young children - 10-year-old twins and a 14-year-old. I spend my down time with them. I’m really enjoying having young kids again.” And we enjoy your wonderful performances Mr Waters. Encore! Lennon: Through a Glass Onion is on at the Frankston Arts Centre Sunday June 11.

Hat trick of awards for Peninsula Travel! It’s been an exciting couple of months for the team at Peninsula Travel. Not only has the Peninsula’s premier agency branched out from its flagship base at Mount Martha to open a sister agency in Red Hill, the team is also celebrating a string of victories at this year’s Helloworld travel awards. Director Michele Saunderson and her crew of skilled advisors won a swag of accolades at the May 19 gala ceremony on the Gold Coast, recognising the best of the best across the national Helloworld network of more than 1000 stores. In a thrilling hat trick, the office picked up the State Sales Growth award, was named State Retailer of the Year for the second consecutive year, and also took out top honour with the prestigious National Retailer of the Year award. “I was so surprised. I shouldn’t be, because I have the most amazing team in the world,” she said. “It’s a huge honour just to be nominated, let alone to win both the state and national titles, so I’m very grateful.” Michele said the award was testament to the hard work, skill and dedication of the Peninsula Travel team. “The competition was, as always, extremely tough,” she said. “We were up against the best in the Helloworld associates groups, of which there are hundreds across Australia - some offices have 10 branches - so we are absolutely thrilled to have been chosen.”

Jackalope: BY JENNIFER FAULKNER

If you haven’t heard of Jackalope, don’t be surprised. This luxury hotel and dining experience opened at the Willow Creek vineyard in April. Set between Balnarring and Red Hill, less than 10 minutes from the M11, it is well worth the short detour. Melbourne-based entrepreneur Louis Li pushed the creative boundaries with this bold luxury development and he entrusts his chefs with the same licence — and they’ve nailed it. It’s the hottest place in town. There is a strikingly unfamiliar (almost

JUNE 2017 (67)

surreal) atmosphere juxtaposed with a warm and inviting ambiance. A fusion of art, storytelling and hospitality at its finest, every detail has been planned to perfection; meticulously crafted around a central concept of ‘alchemy’. From the flamboyant and contemporary cocktail lounge Flaggerdoot, housed within the original 1876 Edwardian McCormick House, through to two striking conference rooms, 46 stunning hotel rooms, and the 30m infinity pool where you can sip and soak as you watch the sunset, each element comes together to tell part of the story. Boasting a strong team of personable, knowledgeable and friendly staff, this is a very special place. The name occurred to Li during a trip to Berlin when he came across a small Jackalope bunny in an antique store. A mythological creature fabled to be part-jackrabbit, part-antelope, the Jackalope perfectly represented the intangible elements of his vision — playfulness with a dash of daring. And the luxury speaks for itself.

Rare Hare was an unexpected surprise. And a welcome one. Representing the fun side of the Jackalope, this trendy and cosy casual dining space offers a full-day lunch menu with seasonal meals cooked to perfection in the woodfire oven. The relaxed atmosphere and picturesque views of the sweeping vineyards make it perfect for the whole family or lazy Sunday afternoons with friends. If you like Red Hill’s Epicurean, you will love Rare Hare. Doot Doot Doot, on the other hand, is reflective of the strong and fierce side of the Jackalope. It is a bold and enigmatic restaurant featuring marble tabletops, on-trend design and an 8m by 10m lighting installation. Executive Chef Guy Stanaway (formerly of Aman Hotels) and Head Chef Martin Webster (formerly of Montalto) each bring a solid reputation for culinary excellence and they delivered. Every mouthful was a burst of flavour and the duck was the best I’ve had. I was pleasantly surprised to see Webster out on the floor greeting patrons with his masterful dishes. “I try to get around to every table at least once,” he smiled.

Wine connoisseurs will be pleased to know that Head Winemaker Geraldine McFaul is still creating all the Willow Creek favourites, while other premium wines have been sourced from regions around Italy, France, Spain and Australia. The wine list showcases only small-production vineyards smaller than 11 hectares, like Willow Creek. There are also two fully equipped kitchens in the main building — one for the restaurant and one for the sumptuous in-room dining menu — and staff are encouraged to experience each area as they broaden their skills and knowledge under expert guidance. A dream come true for any aspiring hospitality professional. Take a peek, I can highly recommend it.

Sammy J returns to his home town to perform his Barry Award nominated show, Hero Complex at the Frankston Arts Centre. The award-winning comedian, musician and writer has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and Montreal Just for Laughs festivals, has been nominated for three Aria awards and is known as the human half of the Barry Award-winning man and puppet comedy duo Sammy J & Randy. You might recall one of his most popular songs, the Backward Song, where he without fault sings the song backwards. Sammy also wowed a huge audience in 2016 with his ABC TV show, Playground Politics. Hero Complex had its beginnings in 1996 when Sammy J borrowed some Phantom comics from his school gardener. He wasn’t to know until much later, but this moment set off a chain of events that led to the birth of his daughter, saw him committing a crime in Canberra and ended with a federal policeman searching his attic. This is an unbelievable true story directed by Chris McDonald that will have you intrigued, touched and laughing until your cheeks hurt. Hero Complex has already received incredible reviews. The Adelaide Advertiser said: “Hero Complex is, quite simply, comic genius.” The show has something for everyone. It’s a story-telling masterpiece that’s lighthearted and heartfelt. Sammy J’s intelligent humour and impeccable timing has audiences in fits of laughter. This well-crafted story includes stand-up and music – it’s simply wickedly funny. This year Sammy J was named the winner of the Best Comedy 2017 Award at the Adelaide Fringe Week One. Last year he took home the Best Comedy 2016 award at the Melbourne Fringe and was the star of the 2016 ABC hit Playground Politics. Be super and book today; you won’t be disappointed. Australia’s final journey Although there were occasional rain showers, the night was reasonably clear as the Royal Mail Steamer Australia approached the Rip, under the guidance of a pilot. At a speed of almost 30km/h she ran aground on a reef off Point Nepean where she stuck fast with her bottom plates stove in. She had 246 passengers and more than 2000 tons of cargo aboard, including the mail. It was 1.45am on June 20, 1904. Water flooded in through the huget hole, stopping her engines and plunging the ship into darkness. There was no panic aboard, however, as the crew helped the passengers into the life boats. After standing by the ship for more than an hour, the boats carried the passengers to Queenscliff, where all were landed safely. Fortunately, the sea was calm and with the tide in the early stage of flood, the Rip was not in the turbulent state which it can be in unfavourable conditions. At the subsequent inquiry, the pilot was found guilty of misconduct and his licence was cancelled. He was very experienced, having piloted vessels into and out of the port on more than 6000 occasions during 26 years of

service. Unfortunately, his eyesight had deteriorated to the extent that he was unable to correctly identify the navigation lights. The Australia could not be moved from the reef and the ship was sold at auction for 290 pounds plus 20 pounds for the cargo. A large amount of the fittings and cargo was removed, including all the passengers’ luggage and the mail. The purchaser is believed to have cleared more than 180,000 pounds in the subsequent auction sales of cargo and fittings. On July 15 a fire broke out which lasted for five days and completed destroyed the ship. The RMS Australia was built for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company by Caird & Co of Scotland in 1892. One of a pair, her sister was named the Himalaya. The two ships, 142m long with a tonnage of 6900 tons, were among the finest on the run to Australia having all of the most luxurious fittings of their day. They were also among the fastest. The Australia set a new record of 26 days 6½ hours from London to Adelaide in 1892. Chefs cook up a storm Four Peninsula chefs are making their mark on the culinary scene after reaching the finals of two national competitions. Michael Cole, a chef at Georgie Bass Café & Cookery in Flinders (pictured left), and Victoria May, a sous chef at Mornington’s Winey Cow, are among 26 finalists in the Australian Professional Chef of the Year contest. After a series of cooking heats and semis involving all finalists, the top two chefs were due to cook off in a grand final at the Royal Exhibition Centre on Tuesday, May 30. Competition director Gary Farrell said the record 200 entries this year demonstrated how the competition had become one of the most sought-after in the Australian culinary landscape. “And with a share of $10,000 cash up for grabs, it is also one of Australia’s richest competitions.” Meanwhile, Floyd Armstrong, from East Bar and Dining in Mount Martha, and Timothy Chittenden, from Georgie Bass, have made the finals of the Young Chef category of the Appetite for Excellence program. They and the other finalists will be mentored by some of the industry’s most well regarded members, with judges including Peter Gilmore, Christine Manfield, Nick Hildebrandt, Dave Pynt, Sam Christie and Lisa van Haandel. The winner will be announced on August 14.

100 Years and Still Bowling June is a significant month in Mornington’s history – it’s exactly 100 years since Mornington Bowls Club formed. To mark the milestone, Mornington Peninsula Magazine sat down with club member Steve Missen, who has spent months researching and compiling a centenary

( 44

booklet that will be presented to bowls club members in September. Steve and membership officer Susan Gullidge have meticulously researched the club’s history Susan scouring old minutes and Steve searching club computers and old newspaper articles, interviewing long-time members, liaising with the Mornington Historical Society, gaining access

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

BY ANDREA KELLETT to family photo albums and scrap books and more. The result is a fascinating compilation of history, images and facts that we can only scratch the surface of in our magazine pages. For instance, chances are you have heard of Linley Point in Mornington, but do you know who it’s named after? The answer is Frederick Murray Linley who, amongst many other

things, organised and convened the inaugural meeting of the Mornington Bowls Club on June 1, 1917. And that’s just one snippet from the Mornington Bowls Club’s 100-year history. We all recognise the priceless parcel of clifftop land on the Esplanade, opposite the Royal Hotel, that the club has called home for the last 100 years. That land was most probably an Aboriginal camp site and in November 1917 it became home to a four-rink green, but the task of hand watering (by watering can!) proved too big for the bowls club members and the club closed. A permanent water supply became available in 1921 (when Mornington tapped into a town water supply) and the green re-opened on January 30, 1922. And, here’s an interesting note from the club’s archives: “Because of the poor quality of both roads and transport of the day, bowlers living at the southern end of the Peninsula found it infinitely more convenient to travel across the bay by ferry to play at the Queenscliff Bowls Club…” (How times have changed!). The club has had 69 presidents; the site lease was £2 per annum when it opened; the pavilion was built in 1957 at a cost of about £4500 and was extended in

1995; and 1923 saw the opening of the Mornington Croquet Club on what is now known as Green 3. Ladies, who were not allowed to bowl at that time, played croquet while the men bowled! (Again, how times have changed!). Steve contacted the family of the club’s best ever player (the late Jack Glasser, who ran a butcher’s shop in Wilson’s Road with his sons); the club’s oldest living member Bill Saunders, aged 96; several female life members aged in their 90s; 87-year-old Alex Davis whose membership extends back to 1960 and who, with his father, a builder, was heavily involved in the pavilion construction back in 1957. “It’s the first time it’s ever been done that we know of,” he says of the history booklet. And, he readily admits, the research would have been much easier “had we not thrown some of our history into the ‘dumper’ a few years ago”. A centenary gala dinner and a Centenary Cup tournament, both in September, will formally mark the 100-year anniversary. Until then and beyond, bowl on ladies and gentlemen of Mornington Bowls Club. HOW YOU CAN ACHIEVE THE PERFECT COLOUR When you colour your hair, visiting a reputable precision colourist is not the only thing that helps you get the best result. The power of perfection is in YOUR hands. Follow Zúmay’s Top Three Tips before you book, to guarantee you get the look you desire:

#1 ~ DO YOUR HOMEWORK Keep photos of both the looks you do and don’t love. It makes a huge difference when you and your colourist share the same vision. Even if you’re an expert in all colouring lingo, photos will ensure you are explaining your look exactly the way your colourist would.

#2 ~ GO IN FOR A FREE CONSULTATION Your desired colour could take as little as an hour or even multiple appointments. A consultation will help avoid disappointment and guarantee your booking(s) allow enough time to give you exactly the look you’re dreaming of.

#3 ~ BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR COMMITMENT Be true to your nature. If your colourist knows how often you will realistically come in for touch-ups, they can determine the technique and colour that you will best be able to maintain. Once your hair is exactly the way you want, there are a few tips you should follow after your appointment as well. Famiglia a tavola by Andrea Kellett

‘Famiglia a tavola’ - family at the table. It’s the way Italians have, for centuries, dined with family and friends gathered around a hearty meal of homemade pasta, slow-cooked meats and more. And now, it’s here in Mornington. Bronx Napoli Pizzeria 1999 in Queen St is celebrating ‘famiglia a tavola’ on Sundays and everyone is welcome to dine and experience traditional Italian food and atmosphere. Head Chef Alessandro (Alex) D’Auria and Chef Federica Argeramo explain: “When we grew up, Sunday lunch was a big thing. We used to have hand-made pasta and roast. This is what we want to do.” Bronx Napoli Pizzeria 1999 will embrace Sunday ‘famiglia a tavola’ with weekly roast specials and, of course, plenty of homemade pasta. Alex explains that slow cooked meat, including roasts, have been an Italian winter staple for centuries. Gather your family and friends and enjoy Sunday lunch, the authentic Italian way at Bronx Napoli Pizzeria 1999. Blindsided by Bling! BY KATE

I had always assumed my engagement ring would be different to everyone else’s. I’m uniquely individual and so I wanted my engagement ring to be uniquely individual too. Truth be told what I really wanted was for my engagement ring to be the envy of others. Bigger, better and in true bridezilla form, more expensive too.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

In choosing the ring of my dreams I did what most of my girlfriends did. I loaded myself up with various clippings from high end retailers and even the odd movie star. The more outrageous the design the better. I’m going for maximum bling here! Everything changed when I met Anthony at Diamond Coco. Anthony gave me clarity in the form of expert advice. Not only did he show me a range of designs similar to what I thought I wanted but he then blindsided me with a design so utterly different to what I was looking for that it was a game changer! In an instant I knew I had found the one! So what did my dream engagement ring turn out to be? Well it must be said that it was the very ring that I swore I would never wear. A simple solitaire with a breathtakingly beautiful round diamond. Simple, elegant and timeless. All I need now is a boyfriend. Diamond Coco is a diamond wholesaler located at Suite 6, 38A Main Street Mornington. Anthony is available for appointment by calling 1300 230 630.

Itchy Fingers is a versatile band that can cater for all sorts of events ranging from Rock’n’Roll dances to hot rod runs, nostalgia festivals, biker club events, weddings, birthdays and more. The only way to describe Itchy Fingers’ style, whether it be Rock’n’Roll, Rockabilly or Rhythm & Blues, is they play with plenty of ‘oooomph’! The band has frequently been referred to as playing “Rock’n’Roll music with an attitude” with a repertoire and versatility that blends Rockabilly, 1950s Rock’n’Roll, Blues and popular classics from Chuck Berry, CCR, Jimmie Vaughan and Van Morrison. They are guaranteed to please any crowd and keep them tapping their toes, while holding a full dance floor. Itchy Fingers features Domenic Raso (lead guitar/vocals), Robert Monea (rhythm guitar/harmonica/vocals), Steve Virgona (double bass/vocals) and Emmanuel Cushieri (drum). Domenic, Rob and Steve are founding members of Itchy Fingers and are still going strong, with the band’s newest member, Emmanuel, joining in 2012. Founding artists, award winners and rising stars for Whistlewood’s Winter Salon Aboriginal art from six regions of Australia and featuring the work of some of Australia’s best known Indigenous artists are featuring in the McCulloch’s Winter Salon + Art Parade at Whistlewood this month. “As writers and publishers as well as curators of Aboriginal art we’ve had a long working association with Australia’s leading Aboriginal-owned art centres and artists,” says Whistlewood’s co-director Susan McCulloch. “Because of this, we’re able to show works by Australia’s most well known Aboriginal artists, many of whom have been of great significance in the development of this unique art form. As well we love ‘discovering’ new young talents and supporting the work of younger generations.” Some of the well known founding artists whose works are included in the June winter show, says Ms McCulloch, include Western Desert artists Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Paddy Japaljarri Sims, and Shorty Jangala Robertson, Utopia artists Minnie Pwerle and Barbara Weir, the Kimberley’s Freddie Timms, and Eubena Nampitjin and the Pilbara’s Nora Wompi and Bugai Whyoulter. Award winners include Katie Morgan Petyarre, Betty Pumani, Barbara Mbitjana Moore, Freda Brady, Shirley Purdie, Sonia Kurarra, Robert Fielding and Djirrirra Wunungmurra. Opening the exhibition on the Saturday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend is a dynamic Art Parade presentation of 70 + works with informative commentary on the art, artists and their regions. Manyung Gallery’s latest art warehouse move in Mornington serves as a nucleus for all things art the group does on the Peninsula and beyond.

All Manyung Gallery Group locations exhibit original works including sculpture and paintings. New art arrives daily and can also be viewed soon after on the Manyung Gallery Group website at www.manyunggallery.com.au.

Open to the public three days a week and available for intimate private viewings on the weekend, Manyung’s ingenious light and bright space serves as a centre point and new destination for contemporary art lovers. The seven-metre-high ceilings are ideal for observing large works and upstairs there is an enclave for viewing 50 small works. David Wemyss-Smith explains. “Our new space has what I call ‘top to tail’ capabilities. Clients can bring their families for discreet private viewings on the weekend while our doors are open to the public on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am until 3pm. Being situated in between our Mount Eliza and Sorrento Galleries, plus being only 45 minutes from our Malvern Gallery enables us to connect all Manyung Gallery Group concerns with ease. It fits perfectly with our vision of expansion” – they organise their Hong Kong and Singapore showings from here as well - “while offering an eclectic range of contemporary art to our clients.”

A gripping evening of dance Sydney Dance Company’s ‘Frame of Mind’ is a wildly powerful double bill featuring the smash hit ‘Wildebeest’ by Australia’s own Gabreielle Nankivell and the multi-award winning ‘Frame of Mind’ from Rafael Bonachela. Having premiered as part of Sydney Dance Company’s inaugural New Breed season, choreographic prodigy Gabrielle Nankivell’s eloquent ‘Wildebeest’ showcases the power of dancers as individuals and strength en masse. Moody and animalistic, it’s backed by a stormy and industrial score by Luke Smiles. Bonachela’s ‘Frame of Mind’ features a dramatic contemporary-classical soundtrack by Bryce Dessner (from American hit rock band The National), recorded by San Francisco’s virtuosic Kronos Quartet. It won all four categories at the 2015 Helpmann Awards including ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Dance Work’, ‘Best Male Dancer’, and ‘Best Female Dancer’ for its critically acclaimed premiere season. Don’t miss this gripping evening of dance at Frankston Arts Centre on Friday July 14, 8pm. Tickets $27 - $45. Bookings 9784 1060 or thefac.com.au.

Kate Save could quite literally change your life. That’s right. This Mornington Peninsula accredited practicing dietitian and exercise physiologist is changing lives with her expertise in nutrition and her advice on what we are putting in our mouths. If you can’t shed the kilos, Kate and her team have a dietary solution. If you suffer from diabetes, she can help you bring it under control via nutrition, rapidly. In a clinical trial with 10 diabetic patients, Kate and her business partner, Mr Geoffrey Draper, brought her participants’ diabetes close to remission in one week. Kate Save is the director of Peninsula Physical Health and Nutrition and co-director of Mornington-based Be Fit Food (dietitian designed, chef created and prepared, home-delivered food). She is also a business woman and a mum. From this issue, she joins Mornington Peninsula Magazine as a columnist. She will explain how you can lose between 3kg and 6kg in two weeks on a well portioned diet; Art Red Hill celebrated its opening with a VIP event on Friday, May 5, at Red Hill Consolidated School Gymnasium. Art Red Hill is the major fundraising event of the year for Red Hill Consolidated School. The event has been running for 37 years as the premier art show on the Mornington Peninsula. This year’s collection includes more than 60 new artists, along with previously exhibiting artists. Photos: Andrea Haynes

how you can achieve rapid weight loss without supplements or shakes; and how to find out what’s going on in your body when you eat. A few recent success stories include a couple each losing more than 3kg in seven days, a lady losing 6kg in less than two weeks, a man losing 29kg in nine weeks, and another man who lost 36kg in a similar period and who has kept it off for more than six months now. She’ll give us sample meal ideas, share a little about what she’s working on with the CSIRO (she’s been invited to Sydney for a meeting!), talk about the impact of stress on our blood sugar levels and, ultimately, we hope she will help you, our readers, gain a little more control over your health. “We have an abundance of food and information available 24/7 at the touch of a button, yet we’re even more confused about what, when, and how much we should be eating,” she explains. To find out more about Kate and Be Fit Food head to befitfood.com.au and, of course, check out Kate’s columns in our magazine. Her first column is in the Health and Beauty section of this issue, just turn the page.

Rapid Weight Loss v Continuous Weight Loss When looking to lose weight, slow and steady wins the race, right?! This may not always be the case… Evidence is emerging from an Australian study that shows you are likely to lose more weight in the long term (5 years) and retain that weight loss if you lose weight rapidly, rather than slow and steady. The researchers have found that eight out of 10 people assigned to the rapid weight loss program achieved their weight loss goal compared with just 50 per cent of steady dieters (published in the Lancet – Diabetes and Endocrinology, Oct 2014). When talking about rapid weight loss, the term ketosis is common. Rapid weight loss involves the body entering a state

of ketosis, which is achieved when the body doesn’t have enough carbohydrate to use as a source of fuel. Instead, the body breaks down fat in preference to carbohydrates, resulting in rapid weight loss. When your body enters a state of ketosis (2-3 days), you won’t feel hungry! This is due to the production of ketone bodies, which suppress the appetite, making rapid weight loss more achievable. The exciting news about ketosis is that by decreasing the consumption of carbohydrates and high calorie foods, your body has no choice but to burn fat to produce energy! Ideally, a ketogenic diet should consist of no more than 800 calories per day and it should minimise carbohydrate intake, instead relying on protein as a large component of meals. The not-so-exciting news about ketosis is: • Y ou will feel lethargic in the first few days while your body adjusts to the changes in fuel source • Y ou may experience fruity ‘bad’ breath, caused by the production of the ketone body acetone But remember, a ketogenic diet is burning fat and will also improve long-term glycemic control, improve cholesterol levels and result in greater weight loss in a shorter time frame, with less chance of it being re-gained in the long term. You can learn more about this or try a Be Rapid program at Be Fit Food’s website or call us in-store. More than 40 Mornington Peninsula businesswomen gathered on Thursday, May 11, for a cuppa for cancer. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in Dromana’s Green Room raised more than $3236.50 for the Cancer Council, with entertainment by magician Cath Jamison, auction items, manicures, massages and food from Peninsula caterers. Hosted by the Mornington Peninsula Business Women Facebook Group, the annual event was part of a national campaign to recognise how the Cancer Council saves lives through prevention and offers vital counselling and support services. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea was an opportunity for friends, family or workmates to come together, share a cuppa and some delicious food, and help those affected by cancer. Event organisers Jo Violeta, Janelle Curry, Janet McNeill, Caroline Leslie and Melanie Gard enjoyed connecting with other businesswomen. “The day is as much about supporting each other in our community as it is about supporting the Cancer Council,” Ms Violeta said. “We were thrilled to be coming together as Peninsula women to support this great cause, and thank the Cancer Council for all the wonderful work it does in our community in so many ways. “It doesn’t matter if you are a successful businesswoman, juggling part-time work or starting out in your own business – if you are touched by cancer you need all the help you can get. So many generous local businesses donated their time and expertise to the charity day yet again; we can’t thank their generous spirits enough.”

FACTS ABOUT FAT FREEZING Fat freezing…body sculpting has been around for a number of years. And now newer, more advanced equipment is available. You can reduce love handles, stomach bulges, inner and outer thighs etc and it is ideal for clients on a stable weight with small to moderate, stubborn areas of fat that do not reduce, even with diet and exercise. A good example is back fat or, as we say, “back bra fat”. A controlled cooling system is used to freeze fat cells, thus destroying them at a low temperature, killing them. These fat cells will gradually disappear over the next few months (often less than six weeks), without damaging surrounding tissue with the benefit of skin tightening. Natural looking fat reduction occurs without surgery, needles, or risk. No downtime. Simply read a book, work on your iPad or listen to music. For a consultation, please phone Advanced Skin & Laser on 9787 7475. IT IS TIME... remove that stubborn fat. BY SUE VERHEYEN JUNE 2017 (67)

your June stars

by Stephanie Johnson

Aries

Independence comes naturally to most Aries. You are usually ready to forge ahead with your own plans, leading the way for others to follow or not. In your opinion it is their choice. You can break free of any restraints and feel liberated. However, practice your rusty diplomatic skills.

Taurus

The erratic planet Uranus aligns with Venus, disrupting your usual security when it comes to mating, dating and relating. This can be a positive influence if your key relationship needs a little extra sparkle. You may or may not welcome the changes that are afoot but ultimately they are liberating.

Gemini June is your month to make plans and ensure

your mind is positively occupied. Geminis don’t like to be bored. Boredom makes you agitated. This month sees you busier than usual, particularly in your social life. Friendships, groups, clubs and any organised activity is likely to demand your attention.

Cancer This month tests your self esteem. If you are

self-assured then you can assert yourself in new and diverse ways. You make inroads on your personal goals. If you suffer from a lack of confidence, then this is your month to take steps to boost your self-regard.

Leo

The Moon’s nodes have moved into your Zodiac Sign, heralding a fortunate phase in your life. All Leos have a date with destiny. You begin to notice synchronicity at play in your life. Opportunities arise for you to express your unique gifts. People arrive bringing good fortune.

Virgo

Others are less Virgo now that the Moon’s nodes have moved from your Zodiac Sign into Leo. This could be quite irritating as others start to play and you stay focused on the nitty gritty of life. Your ruling planet Mercury is reminding you to stay focused on the big picture.

Libra

June sees you enjoy a break from your usual routine. You may travel abroad, attend a conference, or escape everyday life immersed in an enthralling novel. You need to enjoy an adventure, an unusual or exciting experience, whether in your neighbourhood or further afield. Largesse is the name of the game.

Scorpio Scorpios are more likely to learn from personal

trial and error rather than from books and other people’s advice. Experiences come thick and fast broadening your life skills and fast-tracking your understanding. Other people may surprise you, in a good way as the planets Uranus and Venus line up in Aries.

Sagittarius

Other people are the focus during June. Mating, dating and relating may be high on your agenda. Someone special may demand your attention. Alternatively, perhaps you are keen to spend quality time with family, friends and colleagues. Groups are also a focus as long as they align with your own wishes.

Capricorn The daily grind may get some people

down but not usually the diligent Capricorn. This month sees you attend with relish to jobs that need doing. Cleaning, organising, fixing, employing tradespeople and generally getting your house in order are all penciled in and completed. Your work environment may also need attention.

Aquarius

Disruptions become the norm in your home. You may welcome surprise guests, an impulsive suggestion from a partner or visits from loved ones. On the other hand, you may start a creative project that spreads across every spare space in your house. Home decoration ideas could blossom and projects sprout around the house.

Pisces Changes in your personal income mean that you

have a little extra financial support which means that you can reassess how you invest your time and money. This could be because of a female friend or loved one. Any investments in banks, shares, property or joint accounts benefit.

Students on the Mornington Peninsula are becoming qualified to work as teacher’s aides with BRACE Education & Training. A teacher’s aide provides assistance to teaching staff in preschools, primary schools and high schools. Janet and Erin are currently enrolled in the Certificate IV in Education Support CHC40213 with BRACE and have already been recruited by a teacher relief agency. Both Janet and Erin are glad they chose BRACE as their training provider. “I wanted to change my career path to something more fulfilling. I am very glad I decided to study to become a teacher’s aide. The course is enriching, rewarding

and fun,” Erin said. Janet agreed: “I had already done a qualification with BRACE, so when I decided to study again the choice was clear. Our trainer is wonderful and the administration staff are very approachable and friendly.” Janet and Erin are now both on call for teacher’s aide relief. They hope to go into permanent work when they have completed their qualification. BRACE offers the Certificate IV in Education Support in Frankston, Hastings and Rosebud. How to manage when you can’t manage your business From the outside, running your own business can look pretty amazing. You choose your own hours, you’re doing what you love, you get interesting opportunities plus freedom and flexibility. And it is all of those things. But there’s a down-side too. Recently, I had a week of drastic highs and lows. I celebrated my birthday in Sydney by (among other things) attending the Small Business Champion Awards. The celebrations continued when I got home to Melbourne with my family. And then...the kids got sick. I waved goodbye to my personal space for a few days as I was cried on, slept on, even puked on. Anything business related got dropped as I rode out the not-so-high of being a business owner - wishing I could just call in sick and someone else in the office would pick up the slack. I’ll be honest with you, I struggled (as I shared over on Instagram @soarcollective – look for the pic of sick kids leaning on me!). I missed business-owner me and I didn’t know when I’d see her again! Regardless of whether or not you have kids, there will always be something that pulls you away from your business - your own illness, a family crisis, a friend who needs your support. You’ll feel guilty, maybe even resentful. The work will continue to pile up so when you do get back you’ll probably feel overwhelmed, having lost sight of your own version of super-sized, on-fire you. Here’s what I remind myself at times like that, and I want you to hear it too: You are doing the best you can and when the wave passes you will climb back on top. You will once again feel like you can conquer the world!

Peninsula Made clean green local . . . Red Hill Truffles provides an opportunity to step into a world of sights, smells and taste sensations without parallel. Owner Jenny McAuley is passionate about her venture into farming the knobbly fungus which grows underground, and the only truffle hunt available on the Peninsula. “The spectacular beauty of the farm, even in winter, combined with unearthing truffles and their intoxicating flavour is something I have come to cherish,” she said. Jenny’s truffle hunts (maximum of 15 people) are a glimpse into the mysteries of growing and harvesting the marbled fungus, which can smell and taste like chocolate, beetroot and even seafood. The remarkable skills of her truffle hunting dog Thomas add another delightful dimension to the experience. The hunts conclude with a visit to the Pavilion overlooking the truffière (truffle ground), for sumptuous truffle tastings, more stories by the wood fire and the option of buying a truffle or truffle products including salt, honey, butter and even truffle ice cream. FOOD WINE PRODUCE

Come in from the cold this winter at the GPO Hotel where American Style BBQ gets locals and day trippers alike smoking hot! The GPO Hotel is renowned for its tasty and tender Texas style American BBQ and has been developing this delicious southern American technique over the last three years. The style is trending heavily in town and the GPO Hotel is one of the only spots on the Peninsula to dive right in and embrace the concept completely. American smoked BBQ creates a depth of flavour unlike anything you’ve tasted before. Yoder Smokers bought from Texas bring an exciting and mouth-watering edge to the already extensive menu at the GPO Hotel, and their 600gm Cape Grim Rib Eye smoked rare over Australian hardwoods and then chargrilled to perfection is an infamous speciality. Other cuts perfected on the smokers at GPO include 12 hour pulled pork, beef brisket and beef ribs. Pub food with a modern Tex Mex twist is at the heart of this forward-thinking hotel. Inside you’ll find a balance of modern gastro dining, classic pub meals and a robust hint of Tex Mex cuisine. Forget heading to the snow this Queen’s Birthday long weekend and meet up with friends at the GPO Hotel to experience Tex Mex at its best. There’ll be live music too! (Check website for details). Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the kitchen is open all day from 8am. GPO HOTEL A: 1003 Point Nepean Rd, Rosebud T: 5982 3200 W: thegpo.com.au

Modern Greek cuisine

in the heart of McCrae!

Ooopa!

Have you tried the Peninsula’s new Greek restaurant, Alatonero (saltwater in Greek) yet? Bursting onto the Peninsula’s dining scene in October 2016, Alatonero is the newest offering from the people who brought you Stillwater at Crittenden in 2004 and Freshwater catering in 2013. Formally the McCrae Pavilion, the venue received a significant makeover before opening to rave reviews. Light and bright and reminiscent of a trip to the Greek islands without the airfare, Alatonero features 2 bars, a gorgeous main dining room complete with private deck, and a Hellenic-inspired garden and terrace area. The Greek islands inspired menu is designed to share and features starters such as chargrilled octopus with fava and dill, goat cigars with pomegranate glaze, chargrilled sardines and favorites such as saganaki and dips and fried local calamari. Follow this with large plates such as slow roasted, spit roasted free-range meats and traditional moussaka. Or, try the crispy pork belly with local quince and pickled fennel and some local mussels saganaki from the Josper charcoal oven. Loukamades (little Greek doughnuts) drenched in local honey and rich chocolate mouse with a baklava crumble are just some of the incredible desserts on offer. Local produce heroes the menu and all

FOOD WINE PRODUCE T’Gallant’s annual Mushrooms in May tours are proving as popular as ever. More than 25 guests enjoyed the mushroom meander on May 13, starting in the rustic setting of T’Gallant’s Cellar Door and venturing through the vines of Main Ridge on a journey to identify the different varieties of mushrooms – both palatable and poisonous - prevalent on the Mornington Peninsula. It was followed by a fabulous lunchtime sampling of head chef Marco Vanuzzo’s talents, with mushroom soup, fresh egg tagliatelle with a wild mushroom ragu, Gorgonzola pizza and a private wine tasting. Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

How would you describe the atmosphere at the Pier 10 Estate? Relaxed. Whether it’s an informative yet playful wine tasting, a platter with a glass of wine (and a game of bocce) or a three-course meal, the feeling at Pier 10 is relaxed and fun. Our philosophy is to invite guests into our home to experience our wine, food and hospitality. What can people look forward to when they step through the doors of the Pier 10 Restaurant? A warm reception and beautiful smells coming from the kitchen, plus a roaring fire! Please give us an insight into some of the winter dishes on the menu. We serve dishes like homemade potato gnocchi with textures of artichokes and broad beans, or all manner of slow cooked meats like braised beef cheek, confit duck and pork belly - and of course our spiced calamari with chipotle mayo (We just can’t take it off the menu!). For dessert, you’ll find fruit crumbles, decadent chocolate and homemade honeycomb. Please describe some of the local produce your chef uses when creating the Pier 10 menu and take us through your herb garden. We have just finished with our own figs. Mushroom foraging is also coming to a close. Chilies, tomatoes, pomegranates, eggs and kale are some of the local produce you’ll find being used by our chef. We grow everything from rosemary and lavender to Vietnamese mint and Thai basil. The boys are constantly in the garden picking Kaffir lime leaves and fresh Bay. The Tamarillo tree should be ready to harvest in the next month. What wines do you recommend pairing with some of the dishes on your winter menu?

The latest release Pinot Gris sits well with spiced calamari as well as roasted Kingfish with Romesco sauce. Our estate Pinot Noir is amazing. It pairs well with our glazed quail entrée and confit duck main course. It also finishes well with our cheese board. The braised beef cheek is a real winner with our bold Heathcote Shiraz. What’s on your cellar door grazing menu? Small bites like Hoisin Pork spring rolls, fresh fish croquettes and Calamari. Charcuterie Platter - homemade terrine and pate, salami, prosciutto, cheese and olives. Seafood Platter for 2 - roasted fish and prawns, croquettes and calamari, cured salmon and seared tuna. Please tell us about your wine tastings. Craig will take you through the Pier 10 journey to find amazing bubbles and gorgeous new release Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The Sangiovese is almost sold out! Sundays at Pier10 are all about long lunches listening to live music. What’s on the music menu each Sunday over winter? Local artists play every Sunday in the main restaurant at Pier 10 and include Rob Papp, Jay McLean, James Vincent, Troy Wilson and Frank Bayzer.

In business for more than 40 years, specialising in Georgian and Victorian furniture in walnut, mahogany and cedar, Tom and Jan Hearn are familiar faces at the Tyabb Packing House. With the experience gained from their first venture in the hills and their time in the serious High Street Antique shops, this English couple finally joined the Tyabb Packing House 20 years ago. Here they have created a place where genuine antique collectors can source rare pieces and discuss their passions and interested passers-by can gain a wealth of knowledge on the craftsmanship and skills of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Whether it is a Burr Walnut card table, a Mahogany barley twist bookcase, or a dining table to seat 10 with matching chairs you may fancy, this is where to find it. The hottest window covering trend this winter If you’re on the look-out for the right window covering this winter, then look no further than Dollar Curtains & Blinds’ floor to ceiling curtains. Short curtains are out and floor to ceiling curtains are in! Short curtains do exactly what short pants do - they shorten the height of your windows, and the height of your rooms, making them feel more enclosed. Designed to hang the full length of windows, custom-made floor to ceiling curtains are a must. Hanging curtains as high as possible creates the illusion of height to a room, making windows look bigger and rooms feel more spacious, so it’s no surprise they are becoming more and more popular in Australian homes. Now for the endless practical benefits that make these curtains so popular. Floor to ceiling curtains ensure complete light control, privacy and thermal insulation. So, in winter they are the top choice to ensure your windows keep the cool air out and hot air in! Dollar Curtains & Blinds has specialised in manufacturing custom curtains for more than 50 years, all made right here in Melbourne. Call 5975 3655 to book in your FREE in-home measure and quote or drop by their showroom in the Peninsula Home Centre, Shop C4 1128-1132 Nepean Hwy, Mornington. We’ve got you covered this Winter

Property Home Garden

Winter is considered by most home owners as somewhat of a ‘downtime’ in the garden. If you are an avid or an aspiring food grower, however, this time of year is when we can not only continue to grow many crops but also get prepared for future harvests. While the cool season may see many of our favourite crops fade away, there are many abundant fruit and veggies that can be planted, nurtured and harvested during this period. Vegetables such a leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, peas, broadbeans, garlic, onions, among others, and many herbs, thrive during these wintery months. Several fruits are also providing nature’s goodness now, in particular the huge range of citrus that we can grow here on the Peninsula. Keeping up with successive plantings of your vegies is an important step in linking growing seasons and ensuring that you and your family are receiving the year-round pleasures of edible gardening. Depending on the crop and your available space, you will want to

be planting new seedlings every two to six weeks to keep up with your meal requirements. Crop rotating is one tool that we use to determine how this process works in the garden, and it is worth familiarising yourself with the process, but it’s not ‘the be all and end all’. If you are relatively new to edible gardening, what we want to focus on is simply getting new plants in the ground on a regular basis. Even if you have a small patch, there is always room to squeeze in the next plantings. For a few brief examples, broccoli or broccolini can be planted every four weeks, lettuces and radishes every two to three weeks, and dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale every six weeks (depending on your usage, of course). Perennial vegetables including rhubarb and asparagus can also be planted now as bare-root crowns that will spring to life again as the weather warms. The cooler months are also the time when we maintain and plant our deciduous fruit trees. Structural pruning, feeding and disease control are all carried out at this time of year. We can grow an extraordinary range of fruit trees on the Peninsula, including apple, pear, quince, peach, nectarine,

apricot, plum, mulberry and fig, to name a few. Also many nut trees. While caring for these during winter is most important, it is a great time to expand your small home orchard or begin the journey with your first trees. And it’s not just fruit trees that can go in now. The deciduous cane-berries (raspberries, blackberries, etc), currants and gooseberries can all be planted now also, and planning for space in your garden for a range of these beauties will surely add some flavour to your summer harvests. When planned, planted and cared for well, many people are surprised the amount of food you can produce around your home. It’s not so rewarding when you don’t harvest much. But if you manage your garden cleverly, regular harvests will become your new norm. And if there’s an oversupply? Well, preserving aside, sharing your excess brings its own joys.

Get inspired, Happy gardening. Drew Cooper Edible Gardens www.ediblegardens.com.au

TILE AND GROUT CLEANING

Porcelain floor tiles

Here’s how to get your porcelain and ceramic floor tiles and grout to gleam and sparkle like new, with our tile cleaning, grout cleaning service. Our clients are absolutely astounded when they see this system actually work on their own floors, and you will be too. This exciting system does not just remove years of built up dirt and grime from tiled floors, it also removes detergent residues from the grout lines. Detergent residues can make the grout lines appear discoloured and patchy. In fact, detergents actually make the grout more porous, thereby collecting more dirt. This spoils the look of your floors and leads to them resoling relatively quickly.

Ceramic Floor Tiles

By removing detergent residues, as well as soils, grout lines return their original colour, and, with a little care, you will be able to keep your floor looking cleaner for longer.
