It’s almost here – the Arthurs Seat Eagle grand opening weekend is on December 3 and 4. Tourism industry leaders assembled at the Upper Station on September 5 for the official name launch and the Arthurs Seat Skylift team is now preparing for the first official flight. Adult return tickets will cost $24 and children will ride return for $15, trips will take about 15 minutes each way. Organisers are planning an official opening ceremony on December 3 with additional family fun and entertainment on December 4. There will be a charity auction, with the winner enjoying the first gondola ride. Funds raised will go to local schools. There will also be a special, sentimental touch - the first two members of the public to ride the Arthurs Seat Chairlift when it opened in 1960 (two 16-year-old girls, now aged in their 70s) have been invited. When the chairlift reopened in 2004, they were once again the first to ride and they will be in the first lot of gondolas to depart on December 3, rounding out the trifecta. Construction on the $20 million project started 12 months ago and at the brand launch Arthurs Seat Skylift CEO Hans Brugman recalled the “much loved” chairlift as a kid, swinging his feet and kicking his thongs off mid-air. “The old chairlift was described as ‘much loved’ and we hope to get back to that. Our aim is to become an integral part of the community,” he said. The new eight-seat, state-of-the-art gondolas are designed for safety and all-abilities access, and holders of Carers and Companion Cards will ride for free with their companion. The name Eagle has been chosen to represent strength, vision and that all important bird’s eye view of the bay and the peninsula, across to the city and further afield. The Eagle is set to bring more than 60 new jobs to the area and will have 24 gondolas. It will be open seven days a week from 10am-8pm in the summer season (early December – March 31), last gondola departing at 7.30pm. More: www.aseagle.com.au

Hamish hits top gear One of the bright young stars of Australian motorsport has just added to his already impressive list of achievements. Hamish Hardeman took out the 2016 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge with a win and two seconds at Phillip Island in the final round of the 18-race series on September 10-11. It follows his open-wheel Formula Ford wins in the Victoria and South Australia state championships in 2013 and his fifth place in 2014 in the national championships. The 23-year-old Rosebud carpenter’s journey began as a 10-year-old accompanying his dad on car club outings; at 15 he got a CAMS licence so he could drive his dad’s car on the track; at 17 the “bit of fun” turned

serious when he bought a Porsche 944 and began racing. “It’s a long way to get to where I am today, but it’s kind of like that in motorsport - if you’re brought up lacking the funds to go racing it always makes it a challenge. I’m always chasing sponsorships to make it happen. I was able to get a couple of sponsors behind me this year to see the rest of the year out, which was good. “(My parents) have poured their heart and soul into it, but it’s got to the point where this year was the last year they could fund it. Working’s just a part of being able to pay for it all – the end goal is to be able to take the nailbag off and be a professional driver somewhere. Next year I’ll stay in Australia and try to race in the Porsche Carrera Cup – a

few ex-V8 Supercar drivers come back to Carrera Cup so I could be racing Steven Richards, Craig Baird and Alex Davison. Hopefully I do a good enough job that I’m able to prove myself and a team from V8s or Europe are interested in having me as a driver. “My personal goal is to be able to race overseas in Europe and do the world endurance championship – that’s what Mark Webber’s doing at the moment – but if not and it all goes in a different direction, V8 Supercars would be a good category to be in.” PICTURED: Hamish with fellow drivers Shane Barwood (Class B) and Tim Miles (Elite Class); Top: Hamish powers around the track (photo: Anthony Gilbertson)

LINE-UP TO ENTICE BY ELINE COX

In the heart of summer there are a few things we can’t get enough of, and music festivals are definitely on top of the list. On Saturday, February 4, 2017, the heart of Mt Eliza Village is where you and your friends can gather and enjoy the Mt Eliza Music Festival. The event takes place throughout the village - in cafes and restaurants, three outdoor stages and eight busking locations, where more than 70 musical acts will perform. Expect bands, soloists, DJs, family entertainment, buskers and much more, day and night! The first line-up announcement tells us we can expect artists such as Josh Cashman, Reuben Stone and the beautiful Thando Sikwila (the 23-year-old from ‘The Voice’, pictured) and the major musical production Dreamgirls. More are to be announced. OCTOBER 2016 (59)

The Zimbabwean Thando moved to Melbourne only five years ago, from Canberra, to pursue her career and passion. “It’s the feeling of making a genuine difference in someone’s life and seeing people through tough times and celebrating the great ones. I’m lucky to be a performer and experience bringing that kind of joy to people,” Thando says. She’s never been to the Peninsula and is looking forward to experiencing a new part of Victoria. “And of course to perform! You guys can expect an energetic set reminiscent of Aretha-style belts, a sassy backing vocal section and a groovy band that plays for the Gods. You’ll find it hard not to bop along with us.” The Mt Eliza Musical Festival kicks off from noon Saturday, February 4 and entry is free. More at mtelizamusicfestival.com, proudly sponsored by Mornington Peninsula Magazine, Mercedes Benz Mornington, Morley’s Bar & Bistro and Canadian Bay Hotel.

Students rise to the challenge Students at Toorak College are encouraged to dream big and “give it a go”. Over the past month, many students have had the courage to do just that and be judged in competitions - not an easy thing for anyone to do. A team of four Year 7 girls, with encouragement from their maths teacher, created a video titled Geometry Around the World that was entered in the national Choosemaths Awards. Of the 600 videos entered, Team Toorak Spirit’s entry was named the Junior National Winner by Bernie Hobbs, from ABC TV’s The New Inventors, winning a $2000 prize. Students are also challenging themselves in languages other than English. Recently, junior and senior students competed in the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria Speech Contest, the Frankston Susono Friendship Association Speech Contest and the German Poetry Competition. Many hours were dedicated to practising their set passages with many students being awarded first and second places. Learning a language other than English enriches students intellectually, educationally and culturally. Visit Toorak College’s YouTube channel to view the winning Choosemaths entry and students talking with principal Kristy Kendall about their competition preparations on The Daisy Chain. You can learn how Toorak College inspires students to be brave and follow their dreams by visiting the open day on Thursday, October 13. Scholarships for 2018 are now open, with a limited number available for Year 4 to Year 9. Visit www.toorakcollege.vic.edu.au to find out more. Next chapter for ‘Moondah’ revealed – a retirement village ‘Moondah’ Estate’s next chapter has been revealed as a retirement village, but it will continue to operate as a Melbourne Business School conference venue until December 2017. The sprawling 8.9hectare waterfront property stretching from Kunyung Rd to Moondah Beach has been bought by New Zealand’s largest retirement village operator, Ryman Healthcare, for a reported $40 million. Once settlement is completed, Melbourne Business School will continue its operations at the Mt Eliza camps until December 2017 under a

lease-back arrangement. Moondah Estate was built by James Grice in 1888 as an opulent Victorian residence of 42 rooms and later owned by Sir Reginald Ansett who turned it into a luxury hotel. Melbourne Business School has owned it for the past six decades and put it up for sale this year after deciding to move its executive education programs to new state-of-the-art facilities at its Carlton campus. Ryman Healthcare managing director Simon Challies has announced Ryman will preserve ‘Moondah’s’ historic features. “This is an outstanding site in terms of its natural beauty and it is going to make an absolutely stunning place to live for

retirees who love the peninsula,’’ he said. “We think it has great potential and we are also conscious that ownership of such an historic site is also a privilege. It will be great to see Moondah Estate get a new lease on life as a beautiful home for retirees.’’ Mr Challies said the company’s research showed there was a shortage of retirement living options in Mt Eliza and on the wider Mornington Peninsula. The new village will include independent living apartments and aged care, including specialist dementia care, and Ryman will employ more than 100 staff. “We hope that our plans will provide a comfort to older peninsula residents with

concerns about the future that they can stay in the area they love and get the care they need,’’ Mr Challies said. Ryman has promised to work closely with the peninsula community to design a village in keeping with the surroundings. Ryman operates an integrated care model, which includes independent living apartments, assisted living and aged care on the same site. Ryman Healthcare opened its first retirement village in Melbourne in 2014 and Moondah Estate is its fourth site in Australia. ‘Moondah’ is subject to a restrictive covenant that only allows it to be used for education, religion, religious-based aged care or primary production.

With projects spreading from Portsea to Mt Eliza, Icon Synergy is responsible for some of the Peninsula’s most coveted homes. The launch of their Mornington Headquarters is an exciting new move for Icon Synergy. From his first steps into the industry, Michael’s drive for innovation, excellence and extreme attention to detail have made his commissions highly sought-after. The relaxed weatherboard beach house in ‘Adelaide St’, Blairgowrie was recognised in 2001, (viewable on Icons website) winning the Master Builders Excellence in Housing award. An earlier contemporary example of Icon’s work is the long-line ‘Royston’ project in Mt Eliza, (above) boasting magnificent views across the bay. Michael took on several projects across Melbourne, including ‘Kew House 3’ (bottom right) – a home that scored international fame, including a write up in The New York Times. In 2013, Icon Synergy’s major renovation in Eaglemont, ‘The OCTOBER 2016 (59)

Eyrie’ (viewable on Icons website) won the Master Builders Excellence in Housing Award for Best Renovation over $1m. With work continuing on the Peninsula, the latest from Icon Synergy includes the ‘Shearwater’ (middle right) project in Mt Martha and ‘Sorrento House 1’ (top right). 15 years on from Adelaide St, Sorrento House 1 is a re-invention of the classic beach house. The home is causing a stir, taking out the 2016 Residential Design Award and Most Innovative Kitchen Design. Putting the heart back into homes

With a love of federation houses, a deep desire to restore period homes to their glory years and a desire to give back to the community by increasing the longevity of heritage buildings, Michael Woods decided to go back to TAFE and learn about carpentry.

1388_0916 CRICOS No 00881F

RTO No 0260

A mature-age student studying a Certificate III in Carpentry at Chisholm Rosebud, Michael’s appreciation for antiquity started years ago when he restored old furniture. “It’s here that my appreciation of aesthetics started, coupled with a need for sustainable practices. It’s through this work that I

could see the value of recycling what’s already here and spending the time to give it a new lease on life, rather than replacing those items with new pieces.” Michael’s journey as a mature-age student shows that it’s never too late to make a change, pivot, and do what inspires you. “I have a strong sense of self, can draw on life experience in learning, and know what it is that interests me specifically so that I can focus on specialising in that area.” Making the transition takes commitment and is at times a juggling act. Michael spends some days in the trade school and also works as a furniture removalist the rest of his time. He has spent some of his working life as an unskilled worker, so he’s excited to learn everything there is to learn about carpentry and apply

A better way to buy diamonds There is a better – or, should we say, cheaper - way to buy diamond jewellery on the Mornington Peninsula and the name is Diamond Coco. Owner Anthony Hansen is one of Australia’s leading diamond merchants and he says to expect prices about half that of a retail store! Despite the low prices, Anthony is passionate about diamonds and refuses to sell inferior diamonds found in so many retail stores. As Anthony puts it, his diamonds are his business card to the world, which is why more than 80 per cent of his business comes from repeat customers and referrals. A brush with destiny BY LIZ ROGERS

Are you ready for something fresh? Somers local Amber Jones and Merricks girl Georgie Debenham travelled to the Chumkriel Village of Kampot in Cambodia to teach English at the Chumkriel Language School in 2012 and noticed something other than a language barrier. They were blown away by the poor condition of children’s teeth and felt the urge to do something about it. “Once we knew we could commit to the project for a minimum threeyear period we began raising money to buy each child and their family members a toothbrush and tube of toothpaste,” explains Amber (the Toothbrush Project provides children with a new tube of toothpaste and toothbrush every three months, access to a local dentist twice a year and soap and water). “Within a few OCTOBER 2016 (59)

weeks we managed to raise enough money to take them to the dentist as well,” she continues. The Toothbrush Project also pays for local Khmer woman Saophorn to run the project and go to university. The Toothbrush Project comes from a place of change and education. Ex Woodleigh students Amber and Georgie don’t want to be seen as the girls who flew to Cambodia, made a small difference and then left. They believe real change comes from community-led education. That’s why they have locals Mt T (Nget Sothy), Saophorn and the other dedicated staff at Chumkriel Language School at the helm of the project on Cambodian soil. “It’s vital that the project comes from the locals. We’re the instigators, but the Khmer people who are distributing the products and running the classes are the ones who make it happen,” continues Amber.

“We’ve helped raise money to buy families pushbikes to get into town to find jobs and we’ve paid for petrol so locals can get to the dentist. Saophon also teaches children how bad dental hygiene can affect their overall health and she offers weekly classes covering all aspects of hygiene.” So where to now, I ask. “We are aiming to get more children into school”, says Amber. Now that’s something to smile about. The Toothbrush Project: www. thetoothbrushproject.com.au

Jessica’s Wonderful Ride BY ANDREA KELLETT

Jessica Martini has had a whirlwind year since she was crowned Miss International 2016 last November. The Peninsula girl, 28, recently returned from the US where she represented Australia at the prestigious Miss International Pageant.

Mornington Peninsula Magazine spoke with her

about that event, her year and what happens after she crowns her successor next month. Tell us about your Miss International 2016 experience: In July this year I travelled to Jacksonville, Florida, where I represented Australia against 88 other compassionate, intellectual and beautiful women. The pageant was held over seven days, which included interviews, hours and hours of rehearsals, blanket making for the Wolfsons Children’s Hospital, a group tour of the Jacksonville football stadium and local historical attractions, photo shoots and gala dinner nights, just to name a few! Unfortunately, no win or top 10 placing for Australia this year, but I look forward to working with my successor who I will be crowning in November, to help ensure she is fully prepared for when she heads over to compete next year. What were the highlights of the pageant? One of the highlights for me would have to be the amazing friendships that were formed! After the second day of the

( 28

pageant, you begin to click with certain people and from that point it didn’t matter about the crown because the women I was spending my time with were the most beautiful and faithful women I had ever met and we couldn’t help but just have fun and laugh! And thanks to the wonderful world of social media we can keep in touch even now that the pageant is over! Tell us about your outfits – who made them and how did you transport them? Packing for the international pageant was a hefty task! How does the airline expect a girl to pack her wardrobe into a 23kg suitcase?! When competing in such a prestigious competition, you have to look your absolute best at all times. This means smart business dresses, 6inch heels and full hair and makeup every day! And yes, doing dance rehearsals in heels for hours and hours on end will give you blisters on your blisters! For the onstage component of competition, I had to supply two of my own outfits, one being a fun fashion outfit and the other an evening gown. My fun fashion outfit was designed and made by an Aspendale Gardens woman named Arlene D’monte. Arlene created a gorgeous light blue, fully beaded, two-piece dress that has flowing chiffon attached to the back so when I walked across the stage it appeared I had wings! I felt so confident and happy in the outfit and I couldn’t be any more grateful to Arlene for her help. My evening gown was designed and made by a Sydney designer named Ruth Fattal. Ruth designed this gorgeous ivory and black strapless fitted gown

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

with a huge black silk skirt and a beautiful train. This masterpiece weighed a ton, and lugging it across America in a dress bag almost made me lose my fingers ha ha! When I found out the gown was mainly black it made me nervous as black isn’t your usual pageant gown colour, and I was worried it wasn’t going to sit well with the judges. However, once I put the gown on I felt so beautiful and so elegant that I didn’t care what the judges thought. I felt amazing and I let that come through on stage. It was such an honor and privilege to wear two Australian designers on the world stage. What does this pageant represent? The Miss International Pageant represents women with compassion, intellect and beauty. It has a strong focus on platform and community work and has no height or size restrictions and instead of swimwear they have a fitness round. As a woman of God myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the faith that is a part of this system. The director prayed with us when we first arrived and also before our all important interview. I absolutely loved how open we could be with our faith and that no-one was going to judge us for it. It was truly a beautiful experience. When do you hand over your crown? My reign sadly comes to an end on November 4, when I will be handing my crown over to my successor. It has been a wonderful year and I feel I have been a good titleholder for the organisation. Between now and November I’ll be out and about in the community making appearances and volunteering my time where I can. As an

ambassador for the Cancer Council Australia, I’ll be working with them to advocate for Pink Ribbon Day and their Girls’ Night In campaign, which all takes place in October. What happens after you hand over the crown? After I hand my crown over, I will still be a busy woman! I’m a volunteer committee member for the Western Port Festival and also run the Miss Western Port Pageant, so it will be full steam ahead with that as the Festival weekend takes place in February 2017! I will also get to focus more on the Face Of The Globe Australia Pageant that I run. I’m coming into my 3rd year of running the pageant and now having more time on my hands I can focus on really growing and expanding the system. So, even though my time as a competitor in pageants is almost over, I will always be heavily involved in pageantry. I really enjoy being on the other

side of it and helping other women achieve their dreams and goals. It is such a satisfying job for me and I couldn’t be anymore in love with my life. Can you sum up your Miss Australia International experience? To sum up my Miss Australia International journey, I would have to say it has been just what I needed. It has opened doors for me that I never knew existed, it has helped me gain a greater understanding of who I am, my purpose in life and it has shown me what really matters. Pageantry is a life changing sport, and despite the negative stigma that is often associated with pageants, I will continue to push it and help change the lives of our young women. Your sponsors? Marlene Miller Antiques and JeWellerY by Liz Rogers and thought Sorrento needed more galleries and I also loved doing up buildings. I sold my partially renovated house in Brunswick and holiday house in Sorrento - left my really good job which I loved and have been here ever since. The art passion turned into a passion for antiques. Why live near the sea? Probably because of the relaxed atmosphere, fresh air and the lovely people who live here and visit the area. How does Sorrento compare to other places here and overseas that you’ve been to? Extremely well. It is a beautiful place to live and has everything I need here. Do you have any favourite spots to eat on the Peninsula? We take turns to eat at our fabulous restaurants. We are very spoilt with such good food, coffee and ambience. How would you describe your style (if you have one)? Do you think there is a Peninsula style? Maybe a bit edgy so I am told. I think Peninsula people are rather casual in their style.

What sets Marlene Miller apart from the rest is her eye – an eye for spying a history-laden find to add to her already eclectic array of wonderful antiques in Sorrento. This southern tip of the Peninsula person has been collecting for around 30 years and her store on Ocean Beach Road takes you to a world where craftsmanship and detail take centre stage and age is a thing of beauty. I’ve had a few chats with the marvellous Marlene in the past and have found out one thing for sure; she likes to laugh a lot. Did you find things as a child and bring them home? The only time I did find something was when I picked up a toy from the Doherty’s lawn (they were a big family who lived down the street). I took it home and got into a lot of trouble for it. I had to go and confess! I have not ‘picked’ up another thing since. What makes you want to collect? It is just so lovely to be surrounded by beautiful things and preserve history at the same time. I think it is really important for our future generations as well. Is there a history of collecting in the family? Not really, but my grandmother had very beautiful things. I am lucky enough to have some of those things now. What’s the oldest piece of furniture you’ve

( 30

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

had in store? I have a lovely old Georgian Oak drop-side table at the moment which is close to 200 years old. What is the most interesting piece of jewellery you’ve found? I love the Gold Rush jewellery and do have quite a lot of it, but one of the most interesting pieces I have is a beautiful 15ct brooch/necklace (with love tassels). It has the photograph of a lovely lady in the back and she is wearing the necklace. You the lift up piece at the front and there is a photo of her husband. It’s probably dated around l860. Another great piece is a black cameo necklace made from the lava from Pompeii c.1830. What’s the oldest book you’ve got and what is it about? So many old books have come down from the book room upstairs over the years. Some of them go back to the 1700s. I’ve just gone up to find one called ‘The Horse, in the Stable and Field’ printed in 1875. There are lots more but the book room is a little messy and it takes a while to find things! How long have you been in Sorrento and what do you love most about the area? I grew up having holidays houses in the area, but in 1985 I noticed a derelict building (106) in the street for sale. Whilst waiting for the ferry to Queenscliff one day, I signed up to buy it. I was pretty much into art back then

Do you have a favourite period of design you keep being drawn back to? What’s your favourite period in history? Design wise I do not think you can beat the 1920s. I do not think there has been anything like it before or after. How has Ocean Beach Road changed since you opened? (When was that?) Ocean Beach Road was very country when I opened in 1985. You could see the tumbleweed rolling down the street at weekends. I do like the way it has evolved and think the buildings blend really well. Do you think there is a future in collectables? How has the collectables business changed? Antiques have been out of fashion for a while, but teenagers are now starting to love them. Girls are buying the old cups/saucers for their friends for birthdays and loving the old books because they are interested in the history. The beautiful old furniture will again be appreciated, but it’s getting harder to find as there are not many antique shops left. It is much harder to find good antiques these days for some reason. You would think it would be easier as they are out of fashion - but it’s not. If sailing appeals to you but you’re not keen on getting your feet wet, land sailing could be just what you’re looking for. Victorian Blokart Association vice-president Tim Vance says the sport is perfect for families, young or old, able-bodied or wheelchairbound, and the association is on the lookout for new members. Tim, from Langwarrin, had been sailing Hobie catamarans for more than 25 years when illness forced him in 2010 to turn to land sailing. He found the New Zealand-designed blokart – lightweight, manoeuvrable, perfect for urban areas – ideal, and with former Frankston resident Russ Whitehouse and Brian Campbell, of Mt Dandenong, they established the VBA. “We have had family members come along and have such great times. Parents find it amazing to sail alongside the children and have fun chasing one another. The kids love beating mum or dad around the track, and both the parents’ and kids’ faces say it all. “The blokart is also open to people who are wheelchairbound, giving them the opportunity to sail a land yacht and race against able-bodied people on an even level.” The blokart packs down into a suitcase-size bag and weighs less than 36kg fully rigged. There are two classes: Production, which is straight out of the box, and

Performance, which includes extras such as a carbonfibre mast. A Production-class blokart starts at $3900. With the majority of its members living in the southeastern suburbs, the association has been keen to find land to establish a local track – but despite approaches to Frankston, Casey, Kingston and Mornington Peninsula Shire councils, it has been frustrated. Finally it turned to the western suburbs, and Melton Council came to the party with the offer of

a parcel of land at its MacPherson Park sports ground. Now the VBA can concentrate on events such as the 2016 Victorian State Championships, which it will host at Melton, and growing its membership. As Tim says: “The future of blokart is just taking off.” If you’d like to give land sailing a go, the VBA has blokarts for hire at its Melton track. Melbourne Cup Visitors

The Melbourne Cup has always attracted passenger ships, because as well as transporting the punters to Melbourne, they also provide accommodation. Four cruise ships will be in the Port of Melbourne for this year’s race. The P&O vessels Pacific Pearl, Pacific Jewel and Pacific Dawn will be joined by Carnival Spirit bringing nearly 8000 visitors. The first two ships will arrive on October 31 and leave on November 3, while the others will arrive on the morning of Cup Day. Carnival Spirit will also leave on November 3 but Pacific Dawn will leave the day before. It is also a tradition for ships of the Royal Australian Navy to be in port around the Spring Racing Carnival. One very significant year, for visiting RAN ships, was 1938 because it was the year before the start of WWII. The three ships in port that year were HMAS Canberra, HMAS Vampire and HMAS Voyager. Not one of them survived the war. The Canberra was one of the two heavy cruisers of the RAN. During the early years of the war she escorted convoys around Australia and in the Indian Ocean, including the first convoy with Australian troops to the Middle East. In September 1942 she was sunk after the Battle of Savo Island following the invasion of Guadalcanal.

The Vampire and the Voyager became famous for their contribution to the war in the Mediterranean as units of the ‘Scrap Iron Flotilla’ and the ‘Tobruk Ferry’. HMAS Voyager returned to Australia at the end of September 1941 but was lost just one year later. While preparing to land troops in Timor she ran aground and was bombed by Japanese aircraft. After leaving the Mediterranean, HMAS Vampire was based at Singapore. In December 1941 she was one of the three escorting destroyers with the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse. When those two ships were sunk by Japanese bombers off the coast of Malaya she picked up many of the survivors. Vampire was lost off Sri Lanka in April 1942, when escorting the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes. The two ships came under attack by

aircraft from a Japanese carrier force. After sinking the carrier the aircraft concentrated on her. The winner of the Melbourne Cup in 1938 was the eight year old gelding, Catalogue, which started at 25 to 1. Trained in New Zealand by a woman, it won by three lengths. Computer giant Microsoft has named The Peninsula School’s Director of Learning Technologies and Innovation, Dean Pearman, one of the world’s most innovative educators. Mr Pearman joins only 4800 educators worldwide in the Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert program, whose members share ideas, try new approaches and learn from each other as a global community dedicated to improving student outcomes through technology. “It was humbling to be selected among so many inspirational educators from across the globe,” Mr Pearman said. “My goal has always been focused on helping our students and staff use technology in ways that empower learning. To be recognised for something you are passionate about is truly an honour.” Mr Pearman believes that, when used well, technology has the ability to be transformative, and Principal Stuart Johnston agrees. “At The Peninsula School our use of technology must enhance the learning of students; it must make functional improvements to learning and seamlessly integrate into the curriculum,” Mr Johnston said. “Mr Pearman is an excellent leader in innovation and technology and we’re extremely proud of his achievement.” The school’s technology program is specific to each year level and gives students the correct technology tools that allow them to create amazing learning. THE BUSINESS

More from our series by Jess Jones of Soar Collective. To bring some helpful tips for your business and talk about the exciting innovations of Soar Collective.

In a world of instant online connection, it’s easy to forget how important it is to connect with people offline too and, for some businesses, meeting face to face is actually more effective.

worthwhile and empowering thing you can do for yourself and your business. I believe part of the fear comes from people not being 100 per cent clear on their own pitch or purpose. The sooner you can perfect your pitch and feel comfortable delivering it in person though, the better.

1. Networking events are an excellent way to meet other business owners, just as attending workshops are. Now I know some people seem to have a fear around attending networking events. But if you can break through that barrier, get some practice and gain some confidence, it’ll be the most

2. Spending some time at a coworking space like Co.Co Place or a local library is another great way to connect with other business owners. Even working from a café is a great opportunity to meet other business owners, particularly if you’re very observant or

have great listening skills and can tune in on what they’re working on! 3. I f you’re a product-based business, having a stall at a local market could be a great opportunity to get yourself and your business out there. Even if you’re serviced based, there are plenty of business expos to exhibit at. Besides potential sales, exhibiting allows you to deliver your pitch over and over, and you’ll soon learn if it hits the spot with prospective customers or not. jessjones.com.au soarcollective.com

When it comes to finding new employees, SkillsPlus is the first port of call for Tarrion Kitchens owner Eddie. SkillsPlus has already supplied Tarrion Kitchens with an excellent employee in Joshua, who will be training a new candidate from SkillsPlus to work in the Mornington cabinetmaker’s warehouse. “Joshua has shown real initiative and is committed to his job,” Eddie said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better candidate.” Damian Paul, from SkillsPlus, said the organisation worked closely with Peninsula businesses to help them find candidates who were ready to work. “We also provide a range of support when employers, like Tarrion Kitchen, employ a new staff member through us.” Eddie said SkillsPlus, which was recommended to him by the Salvation Army, made it easy for him to find good new staff for his booming business. “It’s easy to give Damian a call. I don’t need to advertise or look through hundreds of job applications - Damian does it all for me. “I would describe SkillsPlus as a well-organised employment provider and would definitely recommend their service to other local businesses.”

THE BUSINESS

Born to Lead BY ANDREA KELLETT

Lauren Wild isn’t your average 25-year-old. While her peers are partying, studying or travelling, this young Mornington woman (a licensed real estate agent) is navigating the business world with a team of 14 staff under her direction at Harcourts Real Estate Mornington. Twelve months ago, Lauren jointly bought the agency and, in doing so, became the youngest business owner in the Harcourts Real Estate Network, Victoria. Three months later she bought another and amalgamated the two. In 12 months she has doubled the size of her team and doubled the results, steering the business to become one of the leading agencies in Mornington. It’s little surprise that she is now a contender for the Young Business Leader

of the Year Award at the Optus My Business Awards 2016. The prestigious national awards recognise the best businesses and individuals across Australia. But there’s more to her story than meets the eye. She has a savvy business sense, a remarkable drive and a compassion that hints at her extraordinary background. Lauren is a volunteer with Fusion Mornington Peninsula – the not-forprofit youth and community organisation in Mt Martha that offers supported accommodation for young people. The connection? Adversity. She lost her parents at a young age and has stood on her own two feet ever since. “I know what it is like to be orphaned and to grow up in less than desirable circumstances so I hope to be able to guide and support these young people as a role model and mentor,” she explains. Suddenly, the drive makes sense. “I never regret anything that’s happened because it leads me to where I’m going.” Peninsula Springs is a local, family owned and operated Natural Spring Water business, serving the Mornington Peninsula and Bayside Regions. There’s a new boutique in Mornington and Smoke & Vanilla is raising the bar when it comes to style. Corporate health coach turned boutique owner Raluca has opened the doors on a stunning space in Main Street stocking high-end artisan fashion, accessories, home décor and fragrances. It’s feminine, edgy and gorgeous. A Spring grand opening weekend celebration was held on August 27-28. Smoke & Vanilla is the place to shop for special occasions; when you simply want to spoil yourself; and for those head-turning outfits (perhaps a stunning Christopher Esber dress, a fun Cecelia body-suit or an elegant silk pant suit) that will have your friends desperate to know more. This is a destination for carefully selected ranges, limited edition items and exclusive

collaborations. Among Smoke & Vanilla’s brands are IRO, alice McCALL, Pakaria Powell, Dion Lee, Paige Denim and Christopher Esber. “It’s high end, often edgy, often one-off pieces,” Raluca explains. “I try to support artisans, people who are skilled in textiles, pottery, metals, wood and leather.” Raluca can also assist with personal styling. If you are a fan of denim, a dressy shirt and heels, for example, she has the perfect Dion Lee Neck Tie Sleeveless Shirt and BLANKNYC Secret Box jeans in store now. CLASSIC - TIMELESS - EXCLUSIVE PLUSH FABRICS CUSTOM-MADE TRIMS DELICATE HAND-FINISHES MADE IN MELBOURNE BECAUSE MORE IS ALWAYS MORE

Glam up with Glam Empire

Ethereal Beast chiffon dress with floaty peplum and scarf OCTOBER 2016 (59)

Samantha Auld (a.k.a. Samantha Glam) was always destined for a career in fashion. Some of her most vivid childhood memories are sitting by her mother’s feet as she sewed the garments Samantha designed and putting together a runway show for the school talent quest. Formally trained in garment production and fashion design at RMIT’s school of fashion in Brunswick, some of Samantha’s biggest achievements are designing the dress that came first runner up in Myer Fashions on the Field at the Melbourne Cup and later winning first place at the Adelaide Cup. She has also worked as a senior stylist at Collette Dinnigan. With more than 15 years’ experience on the bridal and race wear scene, Samantha has taken the same sensibilities to create Glam Empire, a label all about feeling unashamedly glamorous and feminine. The pieces are classic, timeless confections dreamed up by Samantha in her home studio and exclusively manufactured on the Mornington Peninsula and in Bayside suburbs by seamstresses with the same eye for detail and quality. Samantha’s biggest influence comes from different cultures around the globe. “The current collection, ‘Pink Skies Over Paris’, is all about romance, haute fashion and getting lost in the city of love. Our next collection will be a nod to my heritage, but I’m keeping that under my fez for now,” she says. Glam Empire features plush fabrics, custom-made trims and delicate hand-finishes. The philosophy that more is always more resonates strongly with Samantha, who says one can never underestimate the power of dressing impeccably. “The more glamorous you are, the more unforgettable you’ll be,” she says. Over the years we have constantly updated and expanded our unique jewellery collection and we are still going strong in sales, repairs and remodelling. The latest addition to our jewellery collection

is the Blush Pink Diamond Jewellery range. This range is crafted from 18 carat gold with an exquisite blend of fine white diamonds and Australian natural pink diamonds and is available in rings, pendants and earrings. These pink diamonds, which are mined from the Argyle diamond mine in East Kimberley, WA, are the rarest and most precious diamonds in the world, with the supply of these diamonds becoming even rarer. Gouzlan is now an exclusive stockist for Blush Pink Diamond Jewellery on the Mornington Peninsula, in fact, we are one of only a handful of stockists in Melbourne. - Farid Madkour GOUZLAN EGYPTIAN JEWELLERY A: 76a Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza T: 9787 0100 M: 0419 778 814

In August 2005 I was looking to establish a unique new jewellery business in Mt Eliza when I met the late John Richards, of Hall & Hall Real Estate. John leased me a small shop in Ranelagh Arcade, where I remained for the next five years before I moved out in October 2010 to our current location. So Gouzlan has now been established more than 11 years in Mt Eliza.

“With the arrival of spring there’s no better time to think about how you can look and feel your best,” says Total Face Group chief executive Jo Hannah (pictured). “We’re committed to helping our clients through personalised, long-term treatment plans carefully created by medical professionals to achieve effortless looking improvements.” The result is a considered, realistic and gentle journey to looking your absolute best. “We’ve all seen those people who turn heads for the wrong reasons, because everyone can clearly see the work they’ve had done,” says Jo. “At Total Face Group, we are the antithesis of this. Our clients turn heads because we ensure each treatment plan is perfect for the individual, making them look and feel amazing.” Total Face Group’s Peninsula clinic offers a range of cosmetic treatments including anti-ageing injections, skin rejuvenation and CoolSculpting treatments overseen by Aesthetic Nurse Consultant Michelle Bird. Jo’s final advice to those who think the world of cosmetic treatments isn’t for them is to carefully think about how wonderful it feels to receive a sincere compliment. “When we look good, we feel good, and wouldn’t it be wonderful to feel good more often?” TOTAL FACE GROUP A: 1050 Nepean Highway, Mornington T: 13 32 23 W: totalfacegroup.com.au/peninsula/

It’s your health, your body

are you prepared to compromise? BY ANDREA KELLETT

There’s nothing glamorous about plastic surgery or cosmetic treatments when something goes wrong. It’s an industry crowded with mixed messages about overseas plastic surgery holidays, Botox parties and discounted injectable treatments, but what about the all-important results and patient care? Mornington plastic and reconstructive surgeon Mr Mathew Lee is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons. He knows the importance of selecting a qualified practitioner focused on patient care and the risks of cosmetic and plastic surgery ‘holidays’. He is a fully trained Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in reconstructive and cosmetic breast and nose surgery. In addition to his private practice at the CANVAS Plastic Surgery Centre in Main Street Mornington, he has appointments at both Frankston and St Vincent’s public hospitals. He has seen first-hand what can go wrong when patients compromise on quality. “It’s Russian roulette,” he warns on overseas plastic and cosmetic surgery. “You don’t know who is going to perform your surgery, their techniques, the sterility of the surgeon or the operating facility, or even whether the water supply is clean for the team to wash hands before your operation. There is no guarantee of the quality of any implants used, which implant is used and whether the surgeon has a vested interest in a breast implant

company.… there are so many things that you just don’t know,” he explains. Mr Mathew Lee’s philosophy is all about tailored, personal treatment, excellent results and patient care. Use of the Vectra 3D camera located in the practice applies the latest imaging technology to ensure patient expectations are met. This allows people to see how surgical changes may translate into physical results. In addition to plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, the CANVAS Plastic Surgery Centre offers ‘Clear and Brilliant’ laser skin treatment and anti-wrinkle injections (Botox), performed by experienced plastic surgery and injectables nurse Tara Whitaker. Downtime is minimal and patients can return to work within 24 hours. Also located at CANVAS Plastic Surgery, Cosmetic Physician Dr Fiona Milne provides specialist cosmetic injectable services including lip enhancement/ rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, facial contouring, hand rejuvenation and more. Cosmetic clients are guided through the process of how injections work and how to achieve their goals in the safest, most cost-effective manner. Skin types and needs are assessed and treatment and maintenance plans are devised. Call for a consultation. Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

BY ANDREA KELLETT

The Bellarine Peninsula is set to ignite when the Queenscliff Music Festival returns for its 20th year on November 25-27, and Mornington Peninsula residents are invited to join the party. The 2016 event is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet, with an “all killer, no filler” line-up of more than 80 local and international acts. There’s craft beer, regional produce and accommodation from beachside B&Bs and historic hotels to camping. For Peninsula residents, there are special ferry deals, check out www. qmf.net.au Australian ‘90s indie pop darlings Killing Heidi will reunite at the festival for their first show in 10 years. A festival goer herself, Ella Hooper says: “We’ve been asked to perform live many times over the years and have always declined. But it just goes to show – never say never. To join such a stellar line-up at this year’s Queenscliff Music Festival is the perfect way to return to the stage for us.” The artist announcements have been flowing, including news that international stars Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals will bring the band’s first new album in eight years ‘Call It What It Is’ to Queenscliff. Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen will present songs from a new collaboration and Peter Garrett & The Alter Egos will play songs from Garrett’s forthcoming

solo album ‘A Version of Now’ featuring an all-star band including Abbe May, Martin Rotsey (Midnight Oil), Mark Wilson (Jet) and Peter Luscombe (Rockwiz, Paul Kelly). The legendary Australian band george will reform to play their first shows in 11 years; musical comedy trio The Doug Anthony Allstars will bring their new show Near Death Experience; the Pierce Brothers will perform songs from their Top 10 Aria Chart EP Into The Dirt; and Melbourne’s Jordie Lane returns from LA with a new record and his new band The Sleepers. There’s Sweet Jean, Eilen Jewell (USA), Geoff Achison & The Souldiggers and many more. Festival director Andrew Orvis says: “Turning 20 is a major milestone and we’re really excited about the festival this November. We’ve assembled a fantastic program to celebrate the occasion. Queenscliff is more than just the music though... It’s about great shows, comfy surrounds, a family friendly vibe, yummy food and drinks, all in the beautiful historic Queenscliff. This is a 20th anniversary party you don’t want to miss!” Organisers are predicting a sell-out, so head to www.qmf.net.au to book your tickets. With Rosebud’s long history as a great place to enjoy summer beach holidays, what better place to revive the fun-filled ‘50s and ‘60s lifestyle? This new festival, Foreshore RockFest, will run over three days from November 25-27 and will involve a series of different music, dance, movie, car and vintage shopping events. In its first year, all activity will be based in Rosebud. The fun starts on Friday evening with a beach party in the Rosebud Scout Hall. A new show added to the program is the Mark Andrews Legends Show at GPO Hotel from 7pm. On Saturday morning the town centre will rock with hot rod and ‘chrome bumper’ cars on show, ‘50s performers and dancers along the footpath and a ‘50s and ‘60s market running at Rosebud Primary School. The market will include clothing, food, DJs, live bands and dance demonstrations, with a gold coin entry. The vintage shops in town will pump with music, fashion and bargains while the cinema will feature a classic Audrey Hepburn movie. Saturday evening will provide fans of the ‘50s and ‘60s with multiple dance venues hosting live bands, including the Lincolns, Fender Benders and Honey B and the Stingers, along with a special Elvis double feature at the Dromana 3 Drive-In. Sunday will see a pre-1970s hot rod and classic car show on the Village Green, featuring hundreds of cars and vintage caravans, with live music. For the fashionistas from the era, a vintage clothing and ‘pin up’ contest will also be held in the Memorial Hall next to the car show. The market will continue at the Rosebud Primary School on Sunday from 10am. All events will culminate at 3pm. Tickets are available online and are essential for many events. …AND THE WIND BLOWS INTO SPRING BY CATHERINE GODONY

Five stunning young musicians from our shores, forming the Arcadia Wind Quintet, gave life to a mix of French and Australian compositions on September 4 at the accessible Peninsula Community Theatre, hosted by the Peninsula Music Society. Their brilliance captivated the audience, warming it with virtuosity and rhythmic spontaneity. The opening, Ibert’s Trois pièces brèves, exploded into hues and textures of wind combination. Ravel followed, with Le tombeau de Couperin (1917) depicting the memory of fallen friends of World War II, reminiscent more than nostalgic, yet melodious and vital. This gave way to a picturesque rendition of

Debussy’s Quatre mélodies — his musical reflection focussed on Paul Verlaine’s poetry. Then the excitement of To Ash from Embers, by young Australian Gabriella Vici, commissioned under Musica Viva for the auspices of the Hildegard Project, in support of women in composition. The evening finished with Francaix, with Wind Quintet no. 1, a plethora of colours and articulations, through which the instruments once again blended gently, in sounds transporting the imagination. The softly lit grey backdrop provided a subtle ambience for a performance met with tumultuous ovation.

All nature is but art… 18th Century English poet Alexander Pope from his Essay on Man Master print maker and artist Dianne Fogwell likes to build nests around her. Her home is a creative place - Dianne’s son Jack and his funk band are playing in the music room and her husband Mark is working in his studio while we chat on the phone about the sensory pleasure of artist books, studio solitude, pollination (in nature and of ideas), shimmering surfaces disguising the deep and artists being the grand observers. All is as it should be. It is easy to see how this Canberra School of Art student (graduated 1980), lecturer in foundation, printmaking and Graphic Investigation studies 1981-1996 and finally lecturer in charge of the Edition + Artists Book Studio ANU School of Art from 1996-2005 gets things done. She’s not afraid of an intense dialogue with ideas. This Wollongong girl (who was brought up with five sisters) has a full-bodied creative catalogue of printed and painted works. She has been exhibiting since 1979 and has no intention of stopping. “I’ve been in my studio 10 years after retiring from academia in 2006. There’s no hiding from the work when you are alone. It’s either a good success or a good fail!” she says. Fogwell has created hundreds of linoleum blocks. Her “alphabet of images” is “archived into different draws”. She’s worked with installations, musicians, prominent artists such as Magaret Olley and Robin Wallace-Crabbe and has been invited to international biennials for print and the artist book in Poland, Belgium, Belgrade, France, London and South Korea. Her next exhibition Elegance in nature at Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza explores themes of ugliness and beauty, resilience and strength in nature and trees as our guardians. Both prints and oil paintings (on traditional Italian Gesso board) will be on show from early October onwards. To plan your trip, pick up a trail map from the Frankston or Mornington Peninsula tourist information centres or download a map from the PST website. There’s nothing quite like a gorgeous animal story to put a smile on your face and leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy. Or furry. Ros Almond has collected 50 or so delightful tales of Australian animals for A Wombat In My Drawer (Affirm Press). You’ll meet Bazz the labrador, who sniffs beehives for the presence of a disease that destroys the insects’ larvae – all while wearing a custom-made beekeeping suit to protect him from stings. You’ll read about Winston the python, who literally bit off more than he could chew when he swallowed the barbecue tongs his owner was using to feed him his usual meal of rats. And Swino, a wild pig who consumed 18 tinnies at a Port Hedland camping ground and went on a drunken rampage before passing out under a log. There are incredible stories of animals’ attachment to us humans. When Lulu’s carer, Len, was knocked unconscious by a falling tree branch, the 10-year-old western grey kangaroo began “barking” to alert Len’s family (Skippy would have been so proud). And when an elderly farmer broke his hip on his Benalla property and was unable to move, his pet goat and his dog stayed by his side for five days – the dog lying next to him to keep him warm at night and the goat allowing him to drink her milk so he’d remain hydrated. There are also animals that form unlikely interspecies friendships – such as Iris, a retriever-mastiff cross employed by Taronga Zoo staff as a companion for a cheetah cub called Siri after she was rejected by her mother; and Samson the poodle, who has helped raise kangaroo and wombat joeys and dingo pups at Geelong’s Jirrahlinga Sanctuary. Sometimes it seems as if our intolerance of each other’s

differences is increasing. Perhaps we should look to these animals as an example of how to get along. Mornington Peninsula Magazine has four copies of ‘A Wombat In My Drawer’ to give away this month. Competition entry is open to existing and new Mornington Peninsula Magazine members. Join at www. morningtonpeninsulamagazine.com.au/membership.

Award a tribute to Haydn Godony An up-and-coming performer at the Main Street Mornington Festival is about to get a welcome career boost.

The $500 Haydn Godony Music Award is an initiative of Willochra Enterprise in memory of its founding director and former journalist and photographer Haydn Godony. It consists of a recording opportunity offered by Haydn’s close friend, Don Wallis, and will be presented by Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Graham Pittock. Willochra will also donate $250 to the Peninsula Folk Group and the Balnarring Musicians. Haydn’s sister and current Willochra director Catherine Godony said the organisation’s involvement in and sponsorship of the festival was “a way of encouraging, inspiring and supporting music and musicians on the Mornington Peninsula while promoting the memory of Haydn, who dedicated a lifetime to passionately working in the interests of music and musicians on the Peninsula”.

Carnegie coup for Peninsula choir From Leonard Bernstein to The Beatles, New York’s Carnegie Hall has hosted some of the biggest names in music. In three months the Mornington Peninsula Chorale will join them. The choir has been invited to take part in a performance of Welsh musician and composer Karl Jenkins’ Requiem on January 15 as part of Distinguished Concerts International New York City’s Concert Series. Fifty-one of the choir’s 100 members will spend five days and four nights in New York, performing at Carnegie Hall and in a church in Manhattan, in what choir convenor Judi McKee says will be a once-in-alifetime experience. The choir has performed several of Jenkins’ works in the past after seeking his permission to do so, and Judi believes he probably put the choir’s name forward for the Requiem performance. “We got a call from DCINY inviting us to audition for the performance – Carnegie Hall is very discerning. Our audition was fantastic – we performed something

from Elijah, which we did this year, got an audio-visual contractor in, sent it to DCINY and they were impressed.” DCINY artistic director and principal conductor Dr Jonathan Griffith described the choir as “wonderful musicians deserving of the community’s recognition and support”. Judi says each choir member will have to find a “bare minimum” of $4500 each, which includes rehearsal costs as well as travel and accommodation expenses, but it’s an experience that far outrivals anything in the choir’s 30-plus-year history. “To walk in the steps of some of those famous singers who have performed at Carnegie Hall will be incredible.” Karl Jenkins found fame as a member of the highly influential jazz-rock ensemble Soft Machine before releasing a string of vocalise-style albums, movie scores, and compositions for the likes of Kiri Te Kanawa and the London Symphony Orchestra. He received the OBE in 2005 for services to music. To donate to the choir’s expenses, visit australianculturalfund.org.au/projects/ mornington-peninsula-chorale-new-york-tour/

For the last eight years, Woodleigh School’s Indigenous Education Program has promoted ‘two-way learning’ for indigenous students from Ampilatwatja in the central eastern deserts of the NT and Miwatj communities of northeast Arnhem Land, enabling them to travel to Melbourne and experience life on the Mornington Peninsula. Elders in both communities want their children to have these ongoing experiences but, without significant funding support, these life changing opportunities cannot continue. Profits from LITTLE BIT LONG WAY will be used to fund the travel costs of visiting students and elders from two Yolngu homelands of Dhaliny-buy and Garrthalala in Miwatj (North-East Arnhem Land) and two Alyawarre communities; Ampilatwatja and Irrultja (Central Australia). Presented by McCulloch & McCulloch, the exhibition comprises more than 80 works from 25 leading Aboriginalowned art centres of the Central, Western and Eastern Deserts, Utopia, the Kimberley, Arnhem Land and the Pilbara. It also features works of Baluk Arts - indigenous artists of Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. With this diversity and quality of works, LITTLE BIT LONG WAY adds an important dimension to Woodleigh School’s indigenous program. With your generous patronage and support, this program will continue to make a significant difference to the lives of indigenous children in remote communities. The charming comedy Educating Rita is coming to Frankston Art Centre for a night of entertainment and quick-witted humour. Premiering in 1980, Educating Rita has delighted audiences young and old alike, quickly becoming a classic. It is universal in its themes as though it was written only yesterday, yet it still offers comedic relief. Frank is a cynical, burnt-out English professor who drinks far too much whiskey. Rita is a hairdresser and a bit naive. She has, however, a wonderful and indeed desperate thirst for knowledge and she chooses Frank of all people to introduce her to culture. Frank soon discovers that Rita has a lot more common sense than the so-called educated class within which he moves. He begins to fall in love with Rita for her zest for life, her almost child-like qualities and her simple, natural intelligence. Two very different worlds then collide, merging to produce a charming human comedy. Educating Rita is on Thursday, October 13, at 7.30pm. It contains strong language and is recommended for people 15 years and older. Tickets: members $46/full $52/concession $49/groups of 10 or more $49. To buy, phone 9784 1060; for pre-show dining, phone 9784 1074. FRANKSTON ARTS CENTRE A: cnr Davey and Young streets T: 9784 1060 W: artscentre.frankston.vic.gov.au

Jordie Lane thinks Mornington Peninsula Magazine’s call waiting music is “pretty funky”. That’s rather cool, considering this globetrotting muso’s impressive bio (he’s performed at major festivals around the world including the US, Canada, the UK and Australia). The Aussie artist has phoned in from Nashville, Tennessee where he’s been performing at AmericanaFest and co-writing songs. He’s preparing to jet back to Australia to kick off a two-month tour with his new album GLASSELLLAND (pronounced Glas-Sell-Land) and new band The Sleepers. It’s his first full-length studio album in five years. The Jordie Lane & The Sleepers GLASSELLLAND Australian Tour will see him sweep across Australia’s major capital cities and key regional venues this October and November, ending with a gig at the Queenscliff Music Festival on November 25-27. Growing up in Melbourne’s northern suburbs in Thornbury, Lane has a soft spot for the festival, having holidayed in the seaside town “heaps” and performed at the festival twice. “It’s one of the best festivals in Australia. Coming from Victoria I love driving down to that part of Australia… and having a festival that’s kind of out of a town is always the best I find,” he says. So what can Queenscliff Music Festival goers and Jordie Lane fans expect from this artist at Queenscliff? “A whole bunch of new songs a whole lot more rocked up,” he says. “It’s a brand new band so I feel like we’re going to have a lot more energy.” There’s 13 tracks on the new album and one of them explores the sounds of an ice-cream truck (yes that’s right, an ice-cream truck). But don’t expect that in his live show. On a personal level, he can’t wait to get back home and play his new songs for Aussie audiences. Catch Jordie Lane at the Queenscliff Music Festival, November 25-27. Festival tickets at www.qmf.net.au OCTOBER 2016 (59)

Eat, Drink, Mingle on Main Dr Fox is turning up the heat in Main Street this Summer, unleashing a new menu to complement a funky refurbishment and rebranding. This Café and Bar down the water’s end of Main Street is the place to eat, drink and mingle in Mornington. It is bursting at the seams with new ideas, flavours, cocktails, craft beer, hand-picked wines and extended evening opening hours over Summer. It’s top shelf all the way, including a full service cocktail bar! (there’s no lining up for drinks here). “I don’t have bottom shelf in my bar,” owner Ben Townsend explains. “I have mid shelf and top shelf and you’ll get mid shelf at the price you would pay for bottom shelf elsewhere.” Ben took over the café two years ago and has been crafting the perfect vibe ever since. He has Mornington Peninsula Brewery lager on tap, super tasty liqueurs made with real fruit, fresh produce sourced daily and three different loyalty cards (beer, coffee and cocktails!). It’s a funky venue for intimate functions, catering for up to 45 people, and a great spot for breakfast, lunch and lingering with friends. They’ve got the passion, the location and one of the best bars in town. Dr Fox at 37 Main Street - #yourpoisonisourpassion

Meet Joel Mielle, a qualified chef, filmmaker and Peninsula local with the online presence of an international celebrity. This Mt Martha man can make a chicken breast cooked with cheese and sundried tomato so appealing that 31 million people view in on Facebook. He has made 230 of his online cooking videos, and counting. He started doing it for fun and isn’t completely sure why his Chicken Mozzarella went viral, apart from the fact that he knows how to cook and how to make food look good. His Chicken Francaise did the same, only he posted that one three times and reached about 100 million pairs of eyes. “It’s crazy, crazy that the videos go viral,” he says over a coffee in Mornington. “I think I have

better recipes (than the Chicken Francaise) and they don’t rate even close and it’s gone ballistic and I can’t pinpoint why.” Joel’s business is called Recipe30 and while he still produces and posts the free video tutorials, he is talking to Mornington Peninsula Magazine about his next big thing, a travel and cooking VLOG series showcasing world chefs and their recipes. He started the series while in Italy recently and now plans to feature Mornington Peninsula restaurants and wineries. “We have so many worldclass wineries and restaurants here,” he explains. Joel is essentially a man who has turned something he is passionate about – cooking and filmmaking, into a success. The French-born entrepreneur quit his day job as a chef to pursue a career in advertising, video production and filmmaking. “But I never thought I’d sharpen my knives like this again,’’ he says. His Recipe30 videos are a hit internationally, currently featuring on a Lebanese TV station (NBN TV) daily and

on supermarket video screens across the US. “My potato is on a plasma screen in New York,” he says. “It’s insane when you think about it!” And the reason he’s not instantly recognizable like the Jamie Olivers of the industry? Joel’s face doesn’t appear in his video tutorials. He doesn’t even do voiceovers. He uses video, music and text to tell the story and he believes cooking should be “simple, fun and tasty”. “I’m not on camera, it’s just the food and my hands,” he says (the new VLOGS, however, are a different format and do feature Joel). And he does it all himself, the cooking, filming and editing, from his home in Mt Martha, for now. Marklew Housing win major awards Marklew Housing has scooped the pool at the 2016 HIA Eastern Victoria Regional Housing Awards. The company won the Custom Built Home ($700,000-$1 million), Best Bathroom, Best New Kitchen and Kitchen of the Year categories for a three-bedroom house it designed and built in Mornington. The area it had to work with was only 320 square metres, but the architecture embraces the complexities of boundary setbacks and building height controls, culminating in a visually impressive, contemporary and well-proportioned house that pushes the boundaries in a bold but gentle manner. OCTOBER 2016 (59)

It includes two precision folded metal floating staircases, the second of which leads to a rooftop deck accessed by a hydraulic lifting roof section. Here you are treated to 270-degree panoramic bay views without looking into neighbouring properties, thanks to its clever design. The house also responds uncompromisingly to passive solar design principles. “Nothing about this home is ordinary,” said director Brian Marklew. “Every detail is special, yet there is a peaceful warmth and simplicity that exudes from its understated style.” (see advertisement page 19)

Mornington’s Aquarius Pools has made a huge splash at the Swimming Pool and Spa Association’s 2016 awards. The family-run business, which has operated on the Peninsula for more than 30 years, took out Australian Pool of the Year and picked up gold awards for Best Lap Pool and Most Innovative Pool at the national SPASA awards in Queensland. This follows

the company’s Pool of the Year triumph at the 2016 SPASA Victorian awards. The company’s award-winning lap pool forms part of the ceiling in the living area and kitchen. Three windows in the bottom of the pool are visible from these rooms, and their clever positioning not only provides light into the rooms, it gives the occupants a view of the swimmers above them, creating a visual link between interior and exterior living. It required complex engineering to suspend the pool, which weighs about 50 tonnes when full, within the ceiling of this home, but the stunning result was well worth it. The pool is able to be controlled from the living area and even using an iPad or iPhone - from the office or the golf course. Garden DesignFest returns Garden DesignFest - Australia’s premier open garden event - returns to the Mornington Peninsula on November 12 and 13.

Held biennially since 2004, the event opens professionally designed, private gardens to the public across Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and regional Victoria. It is conducted by Rotary and all funds raised are donated to charity. The 2016 event includes 45 gardens across Victoria and six of them are on the Peninsula. It’s an opportunity to draw inspiration for your own garden and to have a wonderful ‘sticky beak’. The distinction between Garden DesignFest and other open garden events is that all the gardens are designed by professional garden designers. The Peninsula gardens, open on the weekend of November 12 and 13, 10am to 5pm, are: • Flinders - Musk Cottage, 371 Musk Creek Rd, designed by Rick Eckersely • Sorrento - 187 Ocean Beach Rd, designed by Ben McDonald • Mornington - 14 Tallis Drive, designed by Steve Taylor • Mornington - 25 Morell St, designed by Eugene Gilligan • Rye - 7 Douglas Crt, designed by Clive Abben • Mt Martha - 33 Deakin Drive, designed by Clive Abben Musk Cottage in Flinders (1 & 2) is a large garden over several acres in a rural setting. Rick Eckersely blended the previous European garden with native plantings to create a harmonious, natural flow. There are wetlands and forests - some quite formal in the French manicured style and others completely natural. The garden balances broad vistas with intricate detail and there is a surprise around every corner. The garden architecture and furniture blend with the sweep of the land and a jetty

The house is set back from the street and is a bold, modern example of well proportioned architecture. The garden, in contrast, is organic and free flowing. For his planting, Steve used a combination of cuttings, left over plants from other projects and new plants. The colour palette is silver blue, lime green and dark green, with an emphasis on foliage. The use of architectural features shows how good design enhances liveability in a garden. The Morell St garden in Mornington (3) by Eugene Gilligan is within walking distance of Mills Beach. The contemporary residence has bay views and city glimpses at night. The client had just purchased the property when Eugene Gilligan became involved in the redesign of the front and rear gardens as well as the overall refurbishment of the exterior architecture. Natural materials and indigenous plantings have been used to achieve a relaxed haven. Dry stone walls are used extensively as the retaining on a steep block, while timber fencing and decking complement the walls. The Clive Abben garden at Mt Martha (4) - An elegant retreat that has a structured garden towards the street with a sweeping driveway, an open lawn with deciduous trees and an entrance courtyard with pergola and cottage-style planting. The planting is a mix of natives and exotics. A Japanese-style courtyard is, in contrast, minimally planted with some feature rocks surrounded by silver birch. The house that hemp built

The best way to prevent problems with fruit trees is to make sure the tree is in good health. A healthy tree is naturally more resilient to pest and disease problems than a weak tree. That means we have to get our soils right, in particular drainage and pH. Most fruit trees prefer well drained soils and so soil preparation before planting is important. Both drainage and soil pH issues may be remedied with the addition of organic matter. We also need to pay attention to the way we manage our fruit trees. A number of factors may affect the pest and disease status of your orchard, including variety, irrigation methods, feeding, mulching habits and pruning techniques.

We probably all know by now that drip irrigation is the preferred method of watering our gardens, and your fruit trees should be no exception. Overhead irrigation can lead to mildew and fungal problems in warmer periods and can also waste a lot of water. Installing drip irrigation isn’t expensive and you will be rewarded with cleaner fruit. At this time of year, removing rapidly growing grasses from the base of your fruit trees, feeding well with composted manures and mulching heavily will give your trees some protection as they enter the hotter months of the growing season. Summer pruning can also be done now to remove excessive spring growth, overflowering and overcrowding of new shoots. This is a particularly important time to prune the excessive new growth on your espaliered fruit trees. The above simple methods should be enough to keep your trees healthy year after year. As a last resort however, and if our trees are suffering or have suffered recently a major pest or disease issue, we can remedy this promptly to reduce infestation and spread by using organic sprays. There are a number of multi-use sprays that you can either prepare yourself

or purchase to tackle the majority of common fruit tree problems we find on the Peninsula including horticultural oils, white oil, lime-sulphur, milk sprays and Bordeaux to name a few. For your deciduous trees, winter is the time to consider applying your fungicides to combat last season’s disease issues, so don’t do it now. The horticultural oils and pyrethrum-based sprays will clear up unwanted pests, but be mindful of harming beneficial insects at the same time. It is well worth researching companion planting to bring in predatory insects that will assist in keeping pest insects at manageable levels. Most problems that the home orchardist faces can be overcome without the use of harsh chemicals and success can be achieved with less fuss than many expect. If you are observant and treat your fruit trees well you can have plentiful supplies of fresh organic fruit for much of the year. And won’t the kids love that!

Happy gardening. Drew Cooper, Edible Gardens www.ediblegardens.com.au

We can grow a wide range of fruit trees successfully here on the Peninsula; stone fruit, apples and pears, berries and figs can all thrive given the right care. Some thrive with no care at all. However, if you do suffer problems with your fruit trees there are a number of things to consider.

Keep your cool with cellular shades In recent years the cellular shade has fast become the quiet achiever in the window-covering world. It’s easy to see why it’s now the top blind product for energy efficiency. With summer fast approaching, cellular shades become much more popular as we all start thinking about how to keep our homes

cool during the warmer months. Whisper cellular shades from Dollar Curtains & Blinds are constructed using a fabric that is cellular/honeycomb in shape, providing superior insulation. This unique shape traps air and helps to create a more constant indoor temperature, keeping you cool in summer as well as warm

during the winter months. The unique construction of DCB’s Whisper cellular shades results in savings of up to 32 per cent on a home’s energy cost. If you’re interested in cellular shades, or curtains, shutters or awnings, make sure you book your free in-home measure and quote soon to ensure pre-Christmas

NO MORE Leaking Showers Bayside Grout Solutions owner/operator Jorg talks about leaking showers and some of their causes. Considering a shower recess is one of the most used and harshly treated parts of the house, in some cases it will be used up to 4 - 8 times a day especially in summer and on sports days. It is then subjected to harsh chemicals and constant moisture. This causes the grout and the silicone to become weak. If not maintained properly it will cause the recess eventually to leak into its surrounds.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

Sure signs of this are damaged door frames, plaster boards and wet carpets adjoining the bathroom’s shower. In some cases, showers leak due to poor installation and ill fitting screens as well. So why not have the shower recess serviced just like you do a car by giving it a full ‘rejuvenation’? This means replacing the grout and all the seals, polishing all surfaces so the shower gleams again like new and gives you many years of use again. All this can be done in most cases in a day and your shower is back in action 36 hours later for a fraction of the cost of a full replacement. For a FREE no-obligation quote call Jorg on 0424 843 358.
