STEAM learning heats up

Woodleigh’s Minimbah Campus was recently overtaken by robots, mad scientists and young engineers intent on testing the laws of physics. Minimbah’s ‘STEAMing Ahead’ night on 18 August brought students and their parents together for two hours of amazing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematical investigation.

Vying for the title of Most Popular Exhibit was the Year 4s’ presentation of their basic coding skills, learnt by programming robots. The students took turns explaining the coding process to parents and illustrating their work by having four of the robots regularly perform a carefully choreographed dance to Ram Jam’s 1977 hit, Black Betty.

Bronzed Aussie does Woodleigh proud The entire Woodleigh School community have become overnight Archery experts after watching Alec Potts (2013) become the first Woodleigh graduate to win an Olympic medal. Alec’s bronze medal in the men’s Archery team event at Rio came after he, Ryan Tyack and Taylor Worth outpointed the Chinese team to take the match 6-2. Staff felt immense pride in watching the young man who, as a senior student, would spend spare periods shooting arrow after arrow at a special ‘range’ built up behind the school’s wildlife reserve. While he missed out by the narrowest of margins in his individual match against Brazilian Bernardo Oliveira, Alec feels he is shooting as well as he ever has and returns home immensely proud of his Olympic achievements. “I wasn’t expecting to go home with a medal at all,” the 20-year-old said. “To come home with a medal, I’ve done more than what I could ask for.” His mum, Shona, was justifiably delighted with his efforts. “That’s the Woodleigh boy in him – that quiet

You’d be forgiven for thinking three-yearold Izzy (Isabella) Monaghan, AKA Zoe from Network Ten’s series Offspring, had been trained in giving wistful glances, but this little lady isn’t old enough to have gone to drama school or to dig deeply into a character’s psyche. She just loves being on television and spending time with on-screen mum Nina (Asher Keddie) and Auntie Billie (Kat Stewart). Innocence and smarts is what you’ll find when talking to this young actress who says the best part about being on TV is the vegemite sandwiches, biscuits and pasta supplied by catering! She sure has the look (she could easily be mistaken for Nina and dead husband Patrick’s daughter) and the camera loves her because she looks straight into it like a wise brown-eyed owl ready to take flight. We are sitting in Mt Eliza with her mum Samantha and 18-month-old sister Eliza (who, by the way, has her own high fashion modelling career which began at the ripe old age of five months). I pull out some paper and a few pens for Izzy to muck around with while we wait for muffins and juice and chat about kinder, pink tutus and not responding to her given name on set – she is only to be called Zoe while filming! “This all happened by chance,” explains mum

Sam. “A Facebook friend told me there was a casting call for Nina’s daughter. I thought, why not give it go? We were on the set of Offspring within three days. My husband thought I was crazy. Izzy first appeared in season five when she was nine months old. We’ve just finished filming season six and are waiting to see if there will be another one. If there is, she’ll have to audition again because kids change so much when they are young.” “I haven’t done it for a while. I miss my Offspring mum,” chimes in Izzy who can’t wait to get back into it. Her biological mum Sam is always onset with her and there’s a full-time nurse as well. Sam’s mother and mother in law help out with looking after baby Eliza while the other two Monaghan girls are working. Some of the days are as long as seven hours. “It’s like an extended family on set,” says Sam. “Everyone is so supportive - the camera men and production staff. They even gave Izzy the doll house that Zoe received for her birthday (on screen) at the end of the season.” “I like Silly Billy Ado and Megge,” says Izzy and we all start to laugh. “I don’t push her,” continues this soon-to-be Mt Eliza local (the family are moving from South Frankston). “We run lines together and have lots of fun.” Check out Offspring on Wednesday nights to see this charming Peninsula princess shine, or follow both the Monaghan girls’ careers on Sam’s Instagram.

Catfishing and how not to be catch of the day At this point in our human history, much of life happens online. We interact through screens, 140-character opinions and endless status updates. Such a technological paradigm requires a lot of trust to make it sustainable. But with the anonymity of the worldwide web, it’s a world where, somewhat dangerously, people can present alternate or idealised versions of themselves. Some do this with criminal intent in a practice known as ’catfishing’, which is now accepted jargon for a person posing online as someone they are not for romantic and/or exploitative purposes. The term originates from the 2010 documentary, Catfish, which follows Nev’s journey to find the woman he believes

he’s fallen in love with on Facebook. When he eventually finds his ‘single, flirtatious Megan’ he is confronted with the reality of ‘40-year-old, married Angela’, who, Nev discovers, is made up from a whole cast of characters in a quest to seduce him. The moral of the story is that online romances are shrouded in mystery and rarely end well. In our current society, the ‘catfish’, however, is a much darker character than Angela who uses the intersection of technology and identity to engender trust in victims before requesting money or engaging in blackmail, harassment, abuse or cyber bullying. A glance at recent headlines confirms that no-one is immune — with everyone ¬from AFL players conned by a ‘catfish’ posing as a top Australian model to NRL players being caught out by a ‘catfish’. Many regular Joes and Josephines are also falling prey.

According to the ACCC’s Scamwatch website, in the last six months there were over 850 reported cases of catfishing in Australia. And that’s probably just the tip of the iceberg because many victims choose to suffer in silence, too embarrassed or ashamed to admit they’ve been ‘catfished’.

The Art of Remembrance is an art exhibition in support of the Alice Sloan Trust, presenting a collection of original elephant sculptures that have been created by artist and Toorak College teacher Greg Sukroo. Each one has a unique story to tell. These exhibition pieces will be included in a silent auction at the 2016 Biennial Women’s Luncheon on Saturday, October 22, at Toorak College in Mt Eliza. Women of all ages are warmly invited to attend the lunch to share in the afternoon of friendship and view the exhibition. Alice Sloan lost her life in 2005 at the age of 16. Inspired by the way Alice lived her life with love, passion and enthusiasm, the Trust was established by her family to provide young people from all walks of life with opportunities that may not otherwise be available. The Trust provides financial and in-kind support to various programs that foster fun, friendship and personal development. The Biennial Women’s Luncheon is the major fundraising event for the Trust, enabling continued growth and sustainability of its programs. Take a walk with Lionel Launch and you’re in for an unforgettable Mornington Peninsula Indigenous experience. Lionel’s walking tours not only expose participants to the wondrous beauty of the region, but also give a magical insight into the cultural history of local Indigenous peoples. “I’ve been studying geography for over 20 years and wanted to revive the culture of Indigenous people in the area,” says Lionel. (He began the walks about six years ago.) “Many people only walk through their environment. Indigenous people take in everything – the insects, plants, bark, animals every living detail. A Lionel Launch Living Culture Walk sees the land and everything in it through Indigenous eyes.” This kind of living history lesson takes on different forms for different groups of walkers. “Some people ask a million questions,” says Lionel, and others just want to breathe in this great southern land’s ancient culture quietly. Lionel chats about the day-to-day lives of local Indigenous peoples and those from broader Victoria while drawing on his intimate relationship with the coast and his ancestry. His grandmother, Nellie Austin, comes from the Gunditjmara-Kirrae Wurrung tribes in Framlingham in Victoria and his grandfather, Archibald Snowball Roach, comes from the Bundjalung tribe

in Byron Bay and Tweed Heads in northern NSW. His mum is Alma Roach, whose baby brother is the inspirational singer/ songwriter Archie Roach. So where do his tours go? “All over the Peninsula,” replies Lionel. Think of trekking through the first dunes at Sixteens Back Beach in Rye checking out bush tucker favourites such as seaberry saltbush, bower spinach and sea celery (also known as sea parsley). “The broad leaf version is twice as strong and is used for stir-fries and curries, while the thin leaf found in the secondary dunes is used for salads, fish and meat,” he explains. Other walking areas include Greens Bush in Main Ridge, Bushrangers Bay in Cape Schanck and Main Creek in Flinders. All walks end with a didgeridoo-led meditation and fire-making display. “I also love connecting with Indigenous kids and men’s groups across the Peninsula, making boomerangs and talking about their heritage,” continues Lionel. He works with Willum Warrain in Hastings, The Briars in Mt Martha, Boneo Maze and Wetlands Centre in Fingal, Peninsula Hot Springs in Rye, Lord Somers Camp in Somers, Bayplay and various schools throughout the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston. Mornington Secondary College principal Linda Stanton can’t wait to see where her new position will take her. It’s only been four months on the job and this education enthusiast who was once encouraged to “go out there and make a difference” by Monash University’s Dean of Education is ready, willing and able to set her school’s education bar high while ensuring all her students are happy and healthy.

“It’s such a privilege. I feel like one day someone is going to wake me up and tell me that it is all a dream,” explains Linda. “I mean, how did I get to be so lucky?” Well, maybe being in the right place at the right time did have something to do with her getting the principal position at Mornington Secondary College, but I’m suggesting that her education-based credentials might have played a larger role, plus the fact she can tap into her students’ and teachers’ strengths – Mrs Stanton is a people person (she loves getting together with friends and family in her spare time). “All students can learn. I want our teachers to be able to recognise that kids are different and sometimes they learn

in different ways. Flexibility and creativity are paramount in a good learning environment,” she says. Linda was acting principal at Fountain Gate Secondary College in Narre Warren for six months before coming to Mornington and has taught at Karingal High (her own secondary school) and Monterey Secondary College among many others. She graduated from Victoria University and has a Masters in School Leadership, but her most impressive characteristics as far as I can see are her calmness, clarity and concern for her students. “Learning is occurring at such a fast pace now. Students are exposed to an information overload 24/7. Young people need to feel connected before they can even think about learning properly. I want to work with our students and their families to develop the whole person and bring a sense of overall wellbeing to the school community. “You never stop learning,” continues this book-loving Mt Martha local and mother of two girls (one a police officer, the other an ICU nurse) - and that includes herself. Linda is constantly connecting with fellow principals across the Peninsula to exchange ideas and find new ways of engaging with her students. “I want to be the best principal I can be; someone who is approachable and is abreast of new learning modalities. I want to lead Mornington Secondary College into being a great school.” Great expectations indeed, I think Mr (Charles) Dickens would agree.

We love our pets at Mornington Peninsula Magazine and thought you’d love reading about local peninsula people and their four legged (and sometimes two or none at all!) friends. To kick off this series of ‘passionate about pets’ stories, Mornington Peninsula Magazine spoke with Mt Eliza locals Andrew and Belinda Stark from Andrew Stark Garden Design and Sissy respectively and found out that puppy love well and truly exists in this family. Andrew, Belinda, Max and Mitch are all barking mad about Bonnie - their 20-week-old dachshund and one can see why she’s truly beautiful. Lovers of the sausage dog say once you’ve had a dachshund you’ll never change. Andrew grew up with a black and brown, and now Bonnie has taken centre stage of his own tight knit clan. “We’ve set her up in the back room on the couch with mood music and heat bags”, says Andrew. “Although we know, she’ll soon progress to the bed”, he laughs. “But she’s got to be careful with the

stairs”, says Belinda who holds Bonnie in the crook of her neck and I swear I can hear that dog purring.

“She eats organic free range chicken

breast with rice and I’ve started collecting clothes from designer dog labels Chewy Vuitton and Coco and Pud”, she continues. (Well of course she has, after all, Belinda knows her clothes!) Andrew has been in the garden game for around 16 years. His Andrew Stark Garden Design business creates stunning gardens Victoria wide and the pride he has for Bonnie is obvious. “She came from a breeder in NSW through the Dachshund Association. It took about three weeks – the breeder was sending us photos until she came down on the plane. We couldn’t wait to get her.” Dachshunds originated from Germany. They live to around 12/13 years old and have a deep chest that provides increased lung capacity for stamina when hunting prey underground. Not that Bonnie needs to worry about that. She’s sitting pretty. “We did FaceTime when I was in Bali”, continues Belinda. And what a face it is - pretty adorable.

Ti Tree at Village Glen and Chisholm’s Rosebud Campus have been working collaboratively throughout 2016 to provide training and employment opportunities for the Rosebud community. The Rosebud Chisholm team and Ti Tree management have programs that provide real employment outcomes and provide placement at Ti Tree at Village Glen’s 222-bed

residential aged-care facility. Ti Tree is co-located with the Village Glen Retirement Village, which provides care and services to more than 800 residents. This makes it the largest retirement village and seventh largest aged-care facility in Australia. It also employs more than 260 people, making it one of the largest employers in Rosebud West. Recognising the difficulties in attracting skilled workers this far down the Mornington Peninsula, Chisholm and Ti Tree have designed programs to attract Peninsula candidates for training and

Johanna Leigh Griggs loves the water. She grew up on Freshwater Beach 17km from Sydney’s centre, received a bronze medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games for backstroke in it and frequently films shows like Channel Seven’s Better Homes and Gardens and House Rules near it. That’s where we come in…. because the Mornington Peninsula is one of Joh Griggs’ favourite surf, sand and wide open spaces places. “The beaches on the south coast are much more spacious,” she says. “Sydney is so built up. Peninsula people seem very relaxed. They make eye contact and are ready for a chat. The locals in Tootgarook (House Rules with Claire and Hagan) were so friendly. They were incredibly welcoming and kept mum about the show until it was ready to air. The food was fantastic too.” “We’ve showcased the most beautiful architecture on the Peninsula in Better Homes and Gardens. The top three that come to mind are The Letterbox House at Blairgowrie and The Klein Bottle House by Mcbride Charles Ryan and the St Andrews Beach House by Sean Godsell.” Johanna Griggs is one busy lady. Between her sports commentating commitments (including the Rio Olympics and Para Olympics), Better Homes and Gardens (it’s the 22nd season of the hit show), House Rules (5th season next year) and writing articles for New Idea and the Better Homes and Gardens magazines, I wonder if she ever has time to catch her breath. “I also run a construction company with my husband Todd,” she continues. The pair met 11 years ago. “It’s great because I get ideas from the shows and can also visualise what the contestants in House Rules need to do because of my experience in construction. I love what I do so it doesn’t feel like work, but I do need some down time sometimes.” That includes standing in the middle of a paddock with a bunch of cows in the Lower Hunter Valley. “We have a cattle farm where we escape to. I can just wander off and talk to the cows,” she chuckles. “They are excellent listeners!” She also loves cooking and spending time with friends and family. Joh has two sons – Jesse who is a sports writer and marketer for the NRL and JB who is a carpenter/electrician. “I had a joke with Todd the other day about him maybe needing a rent-a-wife because I’m so busy sometimes,” she laughs as I suggest good humour might be how she’s remained in the industry for so long. “It doesn’t take much to be friendly with people, to stop for a while and have a laugh. Viewers want to have a yarn and I’m happy to oblige. They are a big part of the show’s success. Kindness is really important. Linda Reeve used to be ‘that’ woman on the train – the one knitting away amid the grind of the daily commute from Frankston to the city. Those days are gone. Today, the entrepreneurial mum, 45, is the brains behind a blossoming online business called The Flying Lamb. Her office (she calls it the woolly workroom) is an upstairs studio at home in Frankston South and from there she crafts chunky blankets, throws and knitwear so divine one could almost eat them. Linda uses the highest quality wool in the world – Australian merino wool – and one look at her website or Instagram is enough to induce drooling: babies, children and beds draped in luxurious, oversized hand-knitted blankets. “Knitting is part of my DNA,” she explains. “The giant stitches of my chunky knits are an extension of standard knitting techniques that have developed over time. Hours of testing, tugging and tears all fuel my passion for these big, beautiful chunks.”

As with any speciality product, there are unique challenges to this craft. Linda buys Australian wool roving (unspun chunky wool) in ‘bumps’ or ‘bales’ and uses cumbersome, oversized knitting needles up to 1.3m long. “It’s not knitting the way our nannas used to do it,” she says, laughing. “I have to use 1.3m-long needles for the king-size blankets and that’s only because I can’t get the needles any longer!” Her most popular design is ‘The Melbourne’ – a charcoal king-size blanket – and her clients include women buying for friends, mothers and daughters spoiling each other, men shopping for their ladies and everything in between. “I’m really lucky to work in something so beautiful,” she says. Most of us have heard the phrase mind over matter and then perhaps forgotten it in times of stress! Julie Davey from Attitude Books Foundation Inc. which focuses on teaching kids how to adopt a ‘can do attitude’, knows these three little words hold big meaning. “I started writing motivational books to gain confidence,” says McCrae local Julie. “One thing led to another. I then began illustrating under the guidance of a friend’s (art teacher) father when I was 21 and started to self-publish children’s books. Self-motivation is a skill that can be learnt. The Attitude Books Foundation’s aim is to give kids the tools to be confident, self-motivated people.” The not for profit Attitude Books Foundation was established in 2015 by six founding members with the primary objective of equipping Australian children with proven strategies to boost their resilience. By sharing universal success principles with Grade 3 children that teach them positive life skills such as developing personal responsibility

and respect for self and others, Julie and her team aim to transform our next generation into can do communities. “Our aim is to give every Grade 3 child in Australia access to our positive psychology books,” continues Julie, who is a world renowned children’s author and illustrator. The foundation also has an Attitude TV link on their website where kids interview ‘Aussie achievers’ (think author Terry Denton, TV personality Grant Denyer and actor Steve Bastoni), a FabFirst5 downloadable app and has had great success in Singapore with the book series being distributed throughout 13 Asian countries. The group has also distributed 2000 books across the Peninsula from Frankston down to the southern tip and holds events which include special guest speakers, videos and live performance. Happy Birthday, Frankston Frankston is celebrating its 50th anniversary of being declared a city with a history day on Sunday, September 4. From 1-4pm, Frankston Football Club will host photographic displays, memorabilia and a short film produced for the anniversary. Several guests will share their stories, and residents and visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions and share memories about Frankston’s past. Frankston’s own heritage property, the Ballam Park Homestead, will also be open for the public to visit. Formerly known as Frankston Shire, Frankston was declared a city on August 24, 1966. Lovers of fine food will be in piggy heaven next month when Frankston’s Waterfront comes alive for the Seaside Street Food Festival. From October 12-16, a rotating roster of gourmet cuisine, craft beer, cider and wine and live entertainment will feature at the festival, part of Frankston City Council’s inaugural Tourism Event Attraction Program. A highlight of the festival will be the Food Truck Park, the home of Melbourne street food. An initiative to help grow the mobile food industry, the Food Truck Park is managed by the Australian Mobile Food Vendors Group and includes a host of food trucks to satisfy everyone’s taste buds. Director Frank Rusitovski said he was “delighted” to bring the Food Truck Park to a new destination and expected it would be a huge success for the community as well as tourism in the

region. Frankston Mayor James Dooley said the festival and the Tourism Event Attraction Program would strengthen Frankston’s reputation for hosting successful major events that enhance the lifestyle of residents and attract visitors from across the state. “These new events are set to bring Frankston City alive, further enhancing

Frankston’s status as a must-see destination for tourism and events on the Mornington Peninsula and within Victoria.” The festival opens on Wednesday, October 12, from 5-10pm, and continues from Thursday, October 13, to Sunday, October 16, from 11am10pm. Entry is free.

from the mouth of the Yarra in the early evening two days later and so passed us in darkness on both passages. Built at Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard at Ulsan, South Korea, in 2004, the E R Long Beach is registered in Luxembourg and owned and managed by German companies. Her overall length of 300m, beam of 42.8m and tonnages of 93,643 deadweight and 83,133 gross have set new length, beam and tonnage records for the PoM. The E R Long Beach has also set a new record in container capacity for the PoM with her maximum capacity of 7488 TEU (Twenty foot Equivalent Unit). Cargo containers are built to standard measurements to enable them to stack together aboard a ship and are either 20feet long or 40feet long. If placed end to end, in a straight line without any spaces between them, the containers she can carry would reach 7488 x 20feet which equals 45.65km. It seems impossible that a ship could carry so many containers but while E R Long Beach is big by our standards she is small compared to the world’s largest container ships. Three sister ships launched in 2015 can each carry 19,224 TEU. Their loads would stretch for 117.2km in a straight line. Many people are concerned about pollution caused by the huge engines needed to drive these vessels but in fact

they are cleaner than other means of transport. One of the operators of very large container ships stated in June this year that transporting 1 tonne of cargo for 1km aboard one of its energy efficient Triple-E ships would emit 3gm of CO2. To transport 1 tonne for 1km by air would emit 560gm and by truck 45gm. Consider the pollution caused by the truck engines if the containers aboard E R Long Beach were dropped off in Darwin or Perth. Typical B-double trucks carry one 20ft container on the front trailer and two 20ft (or one 40ft) containers on the rear. Because a B-double carries 3 TEU it requires 2496 B-double trucks to move the containers from the E R Long Beach. If placed touching, end to end those trucks would fill 62.4km of road but every metre between them would add 2.5km to that distance. The smaller ships visiting the PoM cannot match the emission levels of the largest ships but E R Long Beach causes much less pollution than two ships of 3744 TEU or over 2000 trucks. If you live for the return of The Walking Dead, this month’s Zombie Aporcalypse will really get your blood pumping. Zombie Aporcalypse is the brainchild of Ray Hutchinson, who held the first one last year at the Peninsula Obstacle Racing Course he built two and a half years ago on 22ha at Moorooduc. It was a screaming success.

Runners wear lifebelts with three coloured ribbons – or life flags – and must

outsprint a shuffling zombie, those 60-plus obstacles will slow you to a crawl … and that makes you easy meat. Those taking part can sign up as zombies or runners, and there are also plenty of volunteer positions. The zombie role is a non-speaking part (although they will be required to moan and groan a lot). All zombies undergo a professional makeover at the ZTC (zombie transformation centre) before being unleashed on the runners. They also take home an “I Died at the Aporcalypse” T-shirt . The

runners get an “I Survived” or “I Died” T-shirt (depending on how well they managed to evade the hordes) as well as a great zombie photo opportunity. Artist Mandy Skewes creates individual abstract mixed media epoxy (non-toxic) resin creations inspired by nature’s surrounds - think unique works of art that ebb and flow unexpectedly to generate the light, shade and texture of “earth, fire, water and spirit”. Working out of Black Spot Studios in Mornington, Skewes has taken a one-time hobby that she began about three years ago - producing fun things for kids in her backyard shed - and has turned it into something she can share with artistic-minded Peninsula people. She explains: “I love working with this medium. You never know what to expect even though your technique and understanding of materials and hardware has to be precise. Temperature, the type of paint and resin are paramount to producing work that might look random but is in fact controlled and refined with a bit of surprise thrown in! able to share the experience with others and see the joy they can get out of the process. Having a space at Black Spot Studios has enabled me to do this.” Skewes is holding workshops in her studio where you can learn how to create a resin art stool, home wares or a full bodied work of art. It’s up to you. She’ll take you through the whole process from beginning to end and you’ll learn cool things like how to operate a blow torch! Last year Skewes exhibited at the Camberwell and Bayside art shows and Raw Melbourne’s Paramount Show, so she knows what she’s doing. Twenty-five years and counting. That’s how long Life-Gate has been helping individuals and families in crisis across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula, and the Rev Angel Roldán says there’s still much to be done. Mr Roldán and his wife, Pastor Ulli Rothstein de Roldán, support, counsel and feed some of the region’s most vulnerable people, from the homeless to those with drug and alcohol addictions, victims of domestic violence, at-risk youth and more. In July, Life-Gate opened its award-winning Colour of Hope Youth Art Exhibition at Cube 37 Gallery in Frankston. On August 1, the exhibition moved to Karingal Hub and Star Zone to run for a further two weeks. The exhibition was launched in 2012 as a way of engaging at-risk youth and teaching them valuable life skills. On Australia Day this year, it was named Frankston Council’s 2016 Community Event of the Year. Life-Gate is also well known for its long-standing Friday night food van at Frankston station. This Street Outreach initiative provides food for disadvantaged families, those living rough, troubled youth and more. Community awakens to plight of homeless Peninsula residents have opened their hearts to our homeless, raising almost $25,000 during August’s Sleep In Your Car. Scores of people slept in cars, tents and in the open at Mornington Park on August 6 as part of the fundraiser, the second time it has been held on the Peninsula, and Fusion Mornington Peninsula spokeswoman Gemma Bell described the amount raised as “profound”. “People are just so invested in this issue,” Gemma said. Mornington Secondary School captain Kayla was happy to rough it again this year, saying: “You can’t just sit back and expect things to change.” After shivering through last year’s fundraiser, Kayla, 17, piled on the layers this time and opted to sleep outside in her sleeping bag and blanket, but said she felt “a real sense of insecurity” that made her even more aware of the stresses the homeless face. “You don’t know what is out there so it is very hard to sleep - it doesn’t feel safe. Going to work the next day was so hard. Imagine kids going to school the next day – just awful.” Frankston Rotary member Peter, 69, described his experience as “incredibly moving”. “I didn’t sleep well, but it pales in comparison to what others live with. I have a greater empathy for youth at risk. I was asked to leave Frankston High at a young age, and looking back I can see life could have been very different for me. If I had not had (my family’s) love and support, I don’t know where I would be.” Nathan, of Mornington, has had first-hand experience of homelessness, and now that he is doing better for himself he wanted to give back to the community. “I did encourage my

Have we overplayed the science card?

It’s been the next big thing in education for some time - science and IT, the courses that students are being encouraged to study to guarantee their future in a growing industry. However, a recent report from the Grattan Institute showed that only half of those who graduated with science degrees in 2015 found full-time employment within four months. So is there a future for young Australians in science? “Oh, without a doubt,” says The Peninsula School’s Head of Science, Tracey Carter. “Our students are incredibly passionate about learning, about exploring and experimenting. It’s these things that studying science brings to them and that creates options for their future.” On August 23, the school opened its state-of-the-art VCE science centre, including three hi-tech laboratories and

accompanying classrooms. The opening was attended by environmentalist, author and science journalist Tanya Ha, who said: “The concept of challenging the status quo, of asking why and why not – that’s the skill set that our young people need and that’s the learning journey of science.” As part of the opening celebrations, the school held a Q&A panel where students asked experts about the future of science. Sometimes the smallest things can make the greatest difference. When Coastal Hair and Makeup owner Megan Pipe approached Dress For Success with an offer to help one of its clients, it was a case of similar philosophies coming together. “It was more a question of aligning myself with a community resource with the same desire to make a difference for women in our community,” Megan says. “I do like the idea of empowering women, and in some cases it can be just teaching someone a new skill. There is a lot to be said with building someone’s selfconfidence and self-esteem.” Among the many ways DFS helps women who have been unemployed

for some time is providing free workshops to help build personal and work-related skills. DFS introduced Megan to Linda, who had been taking some of the workshops. “DFS has changed my life, built my confidence and given me the courage to enjoy looking for work,” Linda says. “DFS gave me a complete outfit to wear to interviews and their courses are wonderful.” Megan provided Linda with a complete makeover. Hvezda Hair and Beauty provided Linda’s cut and colour and Sukin supplied the skincare and haircare products that Megan organised “as an additional surprise” for Linda, along with a makeup starter kit. Linda described her makeover as “an amazing experience”.

Should we be wearing hats or fascinators for the 2016 Spring Racing Season? Go with your style, wear a headpiece that reflects your personality and you feel comfortable in. For the races I love a hat. It is one of the only times you can have fun with different millinery styles and looks. A hat just adds that extra special detail. Hat styles that will be popular are the boater, fedora, large brims and turbans. However, clients who attend the races for the first time may choose a smaller headpiece. This year we are seeing headbands and crowns which would be perfect for those starting to wear headpieces and the young race goer. What colours are on trend this year? Black and white will be popular and will be frequently seen in bold geometric designs. Colours will vary from all tones of blue and sorbet, shades of pinks, nudes, lemon and mint to the brightest of colours. Metallic accessories will continue to strongly feature as well. Describe your Spring 2016 Collection? Elegant, stylish and classical with modern edge. It’s all about sculptural shapes that complement and flatter your face. Inspired by the snood and turban, this year’s fresh designs sit further back on your head. Classic shapes such as the boater, fedora, crowns, halos and the platter are delivered with a new twist. Pleating, hand sculpturing and layering enhance these architectural headpieces. Trimmed with geometric handmade silk flowers, fringing or handcut feathers, the shapes remain uncluttered and clean.

My collection is at www.felicitynortheast.com Enjoy! Where have your drawn inspiration from? My main sources of inspiration are the materials themselves. I love discovering how different textures and colour combinations can totally change the feel of a piece. This year I have also drawn inspiration from repetitive geometric patterns in wallpaper, furnishing materials and architecture, especially staircases. Are flowers in trend this season? Flowers rarely go out of trend but their shapes and styles can change with time. This season we are seeing more structured petals and leaves that complement the shapes within the headpiece. Each year I design a new flower. This year it’s a silk satin flower with the veins embossed in the petals. The stamen are vintage or handmade and the leaves are spiky feathers giving the flower a modern architectural feel You won the Melbourne Racing Club Professional Millinery Award, Caulfield, 2015, and the Melbourne Racing Club Professional Millinery Award, Mornington, 2015. What impact has that had on your business? It’s fantastic to know others enjoy your work too and it’s wonderful to reach new clients. Winning awards also ensures clients that my work is of high quality and I can design and create a range of styles. All my pieces are one-offs and I am very happy to create a piece that complements your dress, style and face shape. However, when working from a home studio (in Mt Eliza) some people may feel a little bit more intimidated to ring and pop in to see my work. Please don’t. What is your proudest moment as a milliner? When a client sends me a thankyou note or picture it really puts a smile on my face. What do you love about living and working on the Mornington Peninsula? Besides being a great place to live, I have a wide diversity of wonderful clients, from those working in the industry, trainers, owners, Fashion on the Field contestants (Mornington Peninsula ladies do exceptionally well) to those going to the races for work or fun.

Appearing like magic just in time for the school holidays, scarecrows pop up in front gardens, shop fronts, mazes and vineyards dotted around the Mornington Peninsula hills. Everyone can join in the fun by building a scarecrow to add to the touring trail and win some great prizes, whether you live in the hinterland or not. The scarecrows come in all shapes and sizes and this year they are either traditional or Aussie icon themed art installations made from hay bales, farmyard relics or papier mache’. For a free day out with the kids you can drive around the hills and admire the scarecrows which have evolved into a community art form. Then vote for your favourite online and play the ‘Spot the Scarecrow’ interactive game to win some great prizes. The Scarecrow trail map is also available on the mobile-friendly website or you can print it off before you leave home from www.scarecrowfestival.org.au A special Scarecrow Festival Day will be held on Saturday, October 1, at the Red Hill Recreation Reserve from 9am til 3pm, coinciding with the Red Hill Market. With Rosebud’s long history as a great place to enjoy summer beach holidays, what better place to revive the fun-filled ‘50s and ‘60s lifestyle? Foreshore RockFest, from November 25-27, will involve a series of music, dance, movie, car and vintage shopping events. In its first year, all activity will be based in Rosebud. The fun starts on the Friday evening with a beach party in the Rosebud Scout Hall. On Saturday morning the town centre will rock with hot rod and ‘chrome bumper’ cars on show, ‘50s performers and dancers along the footpath and a ‘50s and ‘60s market at Rosebud Primary School (continuing on Sunday at 10am). The market will include clothing, food, DJs, bands, and dance demonstrations and classes, with a gold coin entry. The town’s vintage shops will pump with music, fashion and bargains, while the cinema will feature a classic Audrey Hepburn movie. On Saturday evening, bands will perform at multiple dance venues, and the Dromana 3 Drive-In will screen an Elvis double feature.

Sunday’s entertainment will include a pre-1970s hot rod and classic car show on the Village Green, and a vintage clothing and ‘pin up’ contest will be held in the adjacent memorial hall. All events will culminate at 3pm. Details: foreshorerockfest.com.au or Facebook Foreshore Rockfest.

This is the latest offering from multi-media artist Wendy JordanPelz, whose show at Lamppost explores the synchronicity of spirituality and art-making processes. Emerging from a practice that comprises painting, video and macroscopic photography, this new selection of Wendy’s artwork uses colour, scale, texture and random paint application techniques to investigate ideas of temporality, emergence and creativity that mirror spiritual experience. The paintings themselves become remnants of the artist’s act of worship, inviting the viewer into their own intuitive perception of what is art and God. Wendy is a Melbourne-based artist whose painting and video works have been exhibited in group shows throughout Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and, most recently, in her first major solo show at Cube 37 in Frankston. Wendy was a finalist in Chapman & Bailey Gallery’s 2015 Belle Arti Prize and in Gallery Smith’s 2014 MCollection Art Award. She holds an MFA from RMIT and is currently Head of Art at Flinders Christian Community College (Carrum Downs). Set Free is currently on show at Mt Eliza’s Lamppost Gallery until September 25. A Byzantine icon writing workshop and open art card competition are also ahead on Lamppost’s program for 2016, offering inspiration and opportunities for creative thought and art-making to all who visit. Wynne Prize winners at Whistlewood Paintings by two of the five sisters whose large collaborative painting of their country won the Wynne Prize for Landscape Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in July feature in the Spring Salon + Art Parade exhibition at Whistlewood Gallery, Shoreham, this month. The Wynne Prize is Australia’s longest running art prize and is awarded each year in conjunction with the Archibald Prize. This year’s winners were the Ken sisters from the Aboriginal-owned art centre Tjala Arts in Amata in the Pitjantjatjara lands of northern

South Australia. Whistlewood’s co-curator Susan McCulloch says: “The Wynne is a hugely prestigious award whose past winners include many of Australia’s most famous landscape artists. We’ve shown the works by the Ken sisters and many other artists of equal stature for a number of years and it’s fabulous to be able to feature them now in this new context as major prize winners!” Ms McCulloch will open the show on September 24 with one of McCulloch & McCulloch’s unique Art Parades. High-jinx on the high seas The hilarious comedy Simon’s Final Sound sails into Frankston Arts Centre on Tuesday, September 13. From the pen of multi-award-winning playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, it’s an Aussie play about four ordinary people on a cruise who try, fail, try again and fail better.

Simon’s a bit of a no-hoper, and he is going deaf. He goes in search of a magical – but possibly mythical – island where he thinks he will find some consolation. To make the journey, Simon teams up with Michael, a dull banker with a duller life, and Michael’s wife, Ginny, who is about to leave him. Also along for the ride is Claude, a blisteringly annoying blockhead with zero social skills. Launching from a jetty of loss and melancholy, Simon’s Final Sound takes the audience on a colourful South Seas voyage with plenty of hula skirts, high-jinx and belly laughs, and makes land on an island of insight and compassion. Accessibility is what this new gallery space brings and contemporary art is at the forefront. Colour, texture and synergy merge to create work that shouts out in bold acrylic or whispers softly in water colours, while sculpture folds and crouches. Figurative and landscape artist Paul Waycott and Melbourne-based abstract artist Wendy Grace are on show at Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza from late August to September. Waycott’s world is one of complex simplicity, fine line and deliciously fluid forms. His solo exhibition concentrates on a contemporary take on the nude and experiments with the exploration of the (heavy French) paper’s limitlessness. “Traditionally the nude is contacted within the boundaries of the paper. I like to go right to the edges of the work using one

shade of acrylic colour to achieve flow and an effortless form that just keeps going – have the viewer’s eye move from side to side and off the paper to somewhere else,” he says. He also paints with oils on linen. Wendy Grace’s gorgeous organic abstract

works drop you into space to explore a world heavy with hollowness, fullness and mystery. Thin washes of high pigment acrylic reveal the history of the paint in her nature-based inspired works where the water lingers with transcendental dreaming well after it has dried. Her Winter’s Song solo exhibition sees a calmness flowing from much of the work where the hidden secrets of a world churning lie. “I like viewers to experience the gaps in my work - a place where the eye can rest. The Mornington Chamber of Commerce holds the Mornington Farmers Market on the second Saturday of every month, 9am-1pm, year round. This not-for-profit market offers a fabulous range of healthy seasonal produce, encourages locals to ‘buy local’ and showcases the peninsula to visitors. There’s hot food, organic fruit and vegetables, homemade conserves, coffee, oils, breads, nuts, sweets, local meat, face painting for the kids, a jumping castle and much more. It is one of just two VFMA (Victorian Farmers Market Association) approved markets on the peninsula. Local Mornington Producer wins Australian Food Awards Woodman Estate Fine Foods has won four medals at the 2016 Australian Food Awards - Australia’s leading national premium food awards program.

The Mornington Peninsula producer is celebrating after winning a gold medal, two silver and a bronze for its estate-made jams and preserves. It’s official - the Peninsula is home to Victoria’s Café of the Year, best café restaurant, best breakfast restaurant, best restaurant in a hotel/motel/resort, best restaurant in a winery, best seafood restaurant and best pizza restaurant! Local venues stormed home with seven awards at the prestigious 2016 VIC/ TAS Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence, held August 15 in Melbourne. They are the pinnacle of industry awards for caterers, restaurants and café businesses and a win delivers significant bragging rights. Our winners include The Rocks Mornington, which won Best Seafood Restaurant for the second consecutive year and owner Rob De Santis said he was very proud of his team. Main Street Mornington’s The Winey Cow - a cafe launched by locals Jill and Campbell Henderson in May 2014 - took out the award for Best Café Restaurant plus the inaugural Café of the Year Award (a major award category). Mi Mexiko is the funky new Mexican restaurant that opened its doors on Main Street, Mornington, in August and it’s the talk of the town right now. Opening night was booked out and word is spreading that authentic Mexican street food is in town. Mornington Peninsula Magazine spoke with head chef Oli Dietel. Tell us a little about your professional background? I have worked in the food industry for over 22 years now. In that time I have cooked in many kitchens both here in Australia and in Europe. I completed my apprenticeship in Germany at a very young age and have not stopped learning and developing my taste and passion for great food. Please describe your style? My style of cooking is very eclectic. Fresh, locally sourced seasonal ingredients are a must. Presentation in food is also very important to me. Beautiful and

pretty dishes that are visually appealing. What do you love about the Mornington Peninsula? What is not to love? Everything. Sunshine, beach, wineries, community, friends, family, great drinking holes, great produce etc… the list could go on and on. Tell us something tantalising about the menu at Mi Mexiko? Without giving too much away, you will find some interesting dishes on the menu that you may or may not have tried. We’ve hopefully developed a menu with something for everyone, with a little bit or a lot of spice. Tell us something we will LOVE about this new restaurant? I believe we will deliver an authentic Mexican flavour that really packs a punch with beautifully presented dishes made from the highest quality ingredients. Well, here we are at the start of the magical season of Spring where we will be growing all of our favourite fruits and veggies. The cooler months are now hopefully well behind us, and the soil gradually warming to the occasion. If you haven’t quite finished preparing your garden beds it’s not too late, though you will want to get cracking. Now is the perfect time to sow seed for your first warm season crops; beans, corn, cucumber, eggplant, pumpkin, squash, tomato and zucchini can all go in now along with continual sowings of our year-rounders like beetroot, broccoli, carrot, lettuce, radish, turnip, lettuces and other leafy greens. And don’t forget the spuds. Try also sowing some seed to bring some flowering colour (and bees and other beneficial insects) into the garden. Some favourites include sunflowers (of which there is a great range available), marigolds, and borage, both great companion plants. If you’re not too keen on raising your vegetables from seed you can purchase seedlings from most good nurseries in your

area, however the range you can get from seed is both vast and economical. Another thing to keep in mind while choosing a new home for your seedlings is that some plants grow together better than others. The practice of ‘companion planting’ involves grouping plants that will support each other’s growth, deter or confuse potential pests and make the most of your available soil space. Common examples are planting basil and marigolds around tomato plants, sowing onions with carrots and the popular ‘three sisters’ (corn, beans and squash), but there are many other planting combinations that work well in the garden. It is well worth sourcing some information on companion planting if you are interested. Mixing up your plantings can lead to some really creative and productive gardens. Many of the crops that we grow during this period are heavy feeders, meaning they will require some additional nutrition during the season. Pumpkins and corn are two of the hungrier plants, but it is worth coming up with a feeding strategy for the whole food garden to keep it ticking along. There are many commercial organic fertilisers on the market which

would do the trick, however it is just as easy, and cheaper, to source and make your own. Liquid manures and compost teas are the most effective food to deliver to your plants as they will be taken up by the roots quickly and provide the plant with nutrient in a useable form. You can make liquid manures in a number of ways, for example soaking cheap ‘farm-gate’ manures in water for a few weeks, or doing the same with your own compost. Our favourite is a combination of worm juice from the trusty worm farm mixed with a green compost tea made from comfrey, nasturtium and stinging nettle leaves. This blend is high in nitrogen while having a good mix of other essential and micro-nutrients. You can apply your liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Be sure to water in well if it is a strong brew. With good preparation, considered plantings and care, your fruits and veggies should thrive this season.
