Phones answer needs in Africa STUDENTS from Our Lady of Fatima School, Rosebud, have been collecting towels for vets as part of their sustainability focus on reducing waste going to landfill and reusing unwanted items. The towels were given to the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s community animal shelter and the emergency animal centre, to help keep animals clean, dry and comfortable. The school’s current drive is to collect unwanted mobile phones and devices for recycling in partnership with Melbourne Zoo.

The recycled minerals in the devices reduce the need for mining in gorilla habitats in Africa. Money raised from recycling other parts of the phone is used to pay for a mobile vet service to treat injured gorillas and vaccinate them against diseases brought into the area by miners. Sustainability teacher Amana Heggen said five recycled phones pay for the life-saving vaccination of one baby gorilla. People can drop off unwanted devices at Our Lady of Fatima School, 16 Hinton Street, Rosebud.

Student’s Pawsome win KUNYUNG Primary School student Lucas Banks has won the fiction grade 3-4 category in this year’s RSPCA Victoria’s Pawsome Stories competition. The nine-year-old’s winning entry told the story of how his border collie Cooper saved the world by being generous and offering to share a bone. It was a lesson that brought colour and life back to a world where people had stopped sharing and being kind and considerate to each other. The annual competition is open to primary school students across Victoria and aims to recognise future authors and build awareness of animal welfare. This year students submitted a one-page story under the headings The day my pet saved the

world (fiction) and Why caring for animals is important (Non-fiction). Judges this year were authors Melissa Keil, Cameron Macintosh and Sally Rippin. RSPCA CEO Dr Liz Walker said judges faced a tough challenge selecting winners this year from more than 400 entries. “This year was the highest number of entries we have received since the Pawsome Stories competition started in 2020,” Walker said. Winners received a selection of Dymocks vouchers, trophies, toys and a unique animal education experience. The list of winners for the 2023 competition and information about the judges can be found at: rspcavic.org/pawsome-stories/
