‘On this day we celebrate how far we’ve come, and we continue advocating for a future where all women have the tools, education and opportunities to thrive’
In this edition, we shine a spotlight on the incredible women in business who are making an impact across the Mornington Peninsula and beyond. These powerhouse entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders continue to shape our community, and we’re proud to celebrate them – especially this month as we acknowledge International Women’s Day
We’re also thrilled to be supporting a range of exciting events across the Peninsula, including the Stellar Short Film Festival, Women in Business IWD, and the Sorrento Writers Festival
But one event particularly close to my heart is the Wild Women in Business Awards, an initiative I created to recognise and honour the multitaskers, mumpreneurs, and trailblazing businesswomen who inspire us daily. This year, we’re grateful to have the support of Mornington Mazda, Commonwealth Bank, Pier Marketing, 3MP and many other businesses that share our commitment to empowering women in business.
Beyond the world of business, we’re diving into some incredible personal stories. We catch up with Noah Szto, a rising star in comedy who was crowned Best Newcomer at last year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. We also chat to Survivor contestant and fearless competitor Laura Noonan as she shares her journey on one of the most intense reality shows we all love to bingewatch.
So grab a coffee, settle in, and enjoy this issue – we hope it leaves you feeling inspired!

THREE MORNINGTON PENINSULA SISTERS HAVE BEEN CARVING A NAME FOR THEMSELVES IN THE SURF SINCE 2019.
By Danielle Davey
It’s not uncommon for one or more of the Holland sisters – Mia, 18, Ava, 16, or Rose, 13 – to appear at any junior surf event in Australia. Their love and commitment to surfing have seen them do well at the highest level. “We all try to surf at least once a day, and when the conditions are good, or on weekends and holidays, we often get a second or third session in the water,” Ava said.
While the sisters share the same desire to win as other competitive surfers, each has her own style. “Mia has a beautiful floaty and graceful style,” Rose said. “Ava is a powerful surfer and generally likes to get the best waves of the day, whereas I like to catch lots of waves and keep really busy.”
In Mia’s final year as a junior, all three represented Victoria at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles at Wollongong last December. Soon after, Ava and Rose competed in the first round of the triseries to decide the junior state champions. The second round will take place at Gunnamatta Beach at the end of this month.
March is particularly busy for Ava, as it is for other members of the Peninsula Surfriders Club to which the girls belong. She competes in the Australian Boardriders Battle in Queensland between March 8-9, then the Phillip Island Pro Junior and Qualifying Series from March 17-22. Next month she makes an appearance at the Rip Curl Pro Trials, before Rose joins her on the circuit in May to compete in the Phillip Island Junior State Round and other contests later this year.
Preparing for competition day, the girls start with a good breakfast, a review of the surf conditions, a warm-up and a check of their boards before paddling out. “Before my heat, I take a few deep breaths, visualise my waves and then go over my strategy,” Ava said.
Once the girls hit the water, they know the judges will be looking at the difficulty, speed, power, flow and variety of their manoeuvres. “I try to stay focused on the waves and keep track of time,” Rose said. “I think about how to best improve my score and make sure I’m patient for the right wave, and adjust my plan if I need to.”
Their confidence comes from not only backing themselves but knowing others have their backs too. Together with the support of each other and their parents, they feel fortunate to have the added encouragement of Surfing Victoria and their club. They say Peninsula Surfriders feels like a second family, compelling them to perform well and celebrating their success. Friendly rivalry with other high-performing female surfers at the club, including Sophie Wilkinson, Sara Hickson, Luka Woods, Elysha Browne and Ruby Armstrong, helps them stay motivated between competitions.
Join the home crowd at Gunnamatta and cheer Ava and Rose to victory in the second heat of the Junior Surfing State Round on March 29-30.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A LONELY STRAY CAT MEETS A GIRL WHO NEEDS HIM JUST AS MUCH AS HE NEEDS HER? EVER WONDERED WHAT LIFE LOOKS LIKE FROM A CAT'S-EYE VIEW?
By Sarah Halfpenny
Mount Martha author Rebecca Fraser’s latest book, Skippy Blackfeet, takes readers on a whiskertwitching journey through the world of an extraordinary feline and the young girl who becomes his person. What started as a picture book evolved into something much more special: an illustrated hardback novel containing three interconnected stories that explore themes of belonging, friendship, and overcoming challenges.
The inspiration for the distinctive title character came from an unexpected encounter. “I was looking out the window one morning and saw a little black cat trot across my neighbour’s driveway,” Rebecca said. “I commented to my family, ‘There goes Skippy Blackfeet!’, and the name lodged itself in my writer’s brain.”
The story follows Skippy, a former stray who becomes May’s emotional
support cat. Through their adventures, which include “birthday party bungles, tumultuous trips into town, and family challenges”, readers witness the development of a friendship that transcends species.
Rebecca crafted these scenarios carefully, saying she “tapped into adventures I thought would highlight Skippy and May’s character traits and vulnerabilities to demonstrate how their synergistic friendship brings out the best in each other”.
As a lifelong cat-lover with two rescue tuxedo cats of her own, Rebecca understands the profound impact pets can have on children’s lives. “The companionship animals provide is beyond priceless. Their calming presence alleviates loneliness, demonstrates patience and understanding, while encouraging emotional wellbeing with their nonjudgemental presence.”
The book thoughtfully weaves contemporary themes throughout its narrative. “I wanted this book to represent the glorious diversity that enriches and defines contemporary Australian life,” Rebecca said. While aimed at children aged 7-12, she hopes the story might be enjoyed by readers of all ages.
Rebecca particularly enjoyed writing a scene set in Frank’s Butcher Shop, where May’s mother calmly stands up to an intimidating customer who objects to Skippy’s presence. The moment showcases the book’s blend of serious themes with gentle humour as the butcher declares: “All emotional support animals are welcome in my store: dogs, cats, hairy-nosed wombats.”
“Skippy Blackfeet is a story for anyone who has ever questioned their place in the world,” Rebecca said,
hoping readers will connect with both the entertainment value and deeper messages within. And while there aren’t currently plans for more Skippy adventures, Rebecca said she'd be “purrfectly happy to jump back into Skippy’s world” if readers demanded it.
Whether you’re a feline fanatic, a champion of friendship or simply someone who loves a tale well told, Skippy Blackfeet is bound to leave paw prints on your heart. And while Rebecca’s current focus is on her upcoming paranormal middle grade series and historical fiction project, don’t be surprised if you hear more meows from this creative corner of the Peninsula. After all, cats do have nine lives, and Skippy’s adventures might just be beginning – because sometimes the best friendships start with four paws and a purr.

AS AN INTERNATIONAL FOOD CRITIC, VICTORIA BROWNLEE HAS TURNED HER EXPERIENCES INTO A MOUTH-WATERING ROMANTIC COMEDY NOVEL. BUT WHILE HER STORY
MIGHT BE SET IN FRANCE, HER HEART BELONGS TO THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA.
By Sarah Halfpenny
My grandparents had a house in Mount Martha where we’d visit every holidays,” Victoria said. “After close to a decade of living overseas, I became fixated on the idea of moving to an Australian beach town, but I still wanted to be close to Melbourne. The decision felt easy.”
Now she’s celebrating the release of her debut novel Eat Your Heart Out, a romantic comedy that draws on her career in the industry. The story follows Australian food blogger Chloe Bridgers in Paris as she competes against cutthroat critics for a chance to write the memoir of controversial celebrity chef Carla Duris. Its Côte d'Azur villa setting provides the perfect backdrop for romance, rivalry, and culinary drama. “I really love the idea of being stranded with a bunch of people who share similar interests but who all have different motives: clashing
egos, hidden agendas and wildly different expectations.”
The character of Carla emerged from Victoria’s observations of the culinary world’s power dynamics. While she encountered many wonderful chefs throughout her career, she also witnessed the darker side of the industry, with some chefs “constantly angling for positive media coverage and pushing PR representatives to wine and dine”.
She also recalls how the industry has evolved. “When I first started writing about food, I remember getting dirty looks from other diners when I would try to snap a few quick, grainy photos. Now with social media, restaurants will actually design their lighting to facilitate photography.”
Having reviewed restaurants professionally, Victoria now enjoys
the Peninsula’s thriving food scene from a different perspective. “I hung up my critic’s hat a while ago now, but I still find myself writing reviews in my head while dining out,” she said. “The Australian dining scene is so innovative and inspiring, and we have access to delicious produce, so all in all I mostly love eating out here.”
When she’s not writing at home, Victoria can often be found seeking inspiration close by. “If I'm stuck on a plot point or I’m trying to figure a character out, I’ll go for a coffee at Schnapper Point Kiosk and a walk along Mothers Beach in Mornington –solves almost any problem.”
Some of Victoria’s most memorable writing inspirations came from her early experiences. “In 2004, I wrote one of my first articles about the Melbourne dining scene. I was a sprightly undergraduate and I reviewed
a restaurant called Black Out, where diners ate in the dark and waiters wearing infrared goggles had to help navigate your hand to your dinner.” This amusing experience found its way into her novel, reimagined through her characters’ perspectives.
Like her protagonist Chloe, Victoria understands the challenges of life in France. “A lot can go wrong when you’re trying to navigate a different country and a different language. I've had more misunderstandings and misadventures in France than I care to count.”
Eat Your Heart Out is available now, serving up a delicious blend of romance, comedy and culinary mishaps set against the backdrop of the French Riviera. One bite and you’ll be hooked.
WITH AN AWARD-WINNING BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE LAST YEAR, MEDICAL INTERN NOAH SZTO HAS BEEN LEAVING AUDIENCES IN STITCHES SINCE HIS DEBUT AS A COMEDIAN. HITTING THE STAND-UP CIRCUIT BY NIGHT AND WORKING HOSPITAL ROUNDS BY DAY, HE’S A MAN OF MANY TALENTS.
By Danielle Davey
Named Best Newcomer at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Noah is fast gaining a foothold in the industry. After playing to audiences of 30 in a small karaoke bar last April, Noah’s win secured greater exposure at this year’s festival and a trip to perform in London. In Melbourne, Med School – a hilarious take on his adventures as a medical student – will be staged in a 90seat theatre at ACMI, with 22 performances from March 27-April 20.
A former student at Peninsula Grammar, Noah could easily be the face of its current Unleash Greatness campaign. Months before the school’s billboards appeared, posters promoting his first show Success in Everything featured a photo of him looming large in the background, framed by an overarching rainbow.
The title occurred to him while holidaying in Penang. At a mountain temple where tourists are encouraged to randomly select a colourful wishing ribbon, Noah plucked one labelled ‘success in everything’. He knew then he had found the perfect title for his debut. The phrase was a dig at himself as an overachiever, constantly striving to do more and do better.
Early examples of his self-deprecating humour exist in homemade YouTube videos that are still online. Reflecting on them, he joked: “I could never understand why I didn’t go viral.” In one, with a backdrop of shelves displaying Rubik’s cubes and Andy Griffiths books, 13-year-old Noah tells viewers: “I spend most of my time on the internet,” before cheekily turning his laptop screen
towards the camera to reveal the words “I spend most of my time on the toilet”. His comedy has matured, but creative use of props and funny asides continue as trademarks. The same affable, open style now endears him to theatregoers.
The son of mixed parents – his mother is Australian, his father Chinese-Malay – he insists everyone in his family is funnier than him. Testament to their abiding love of anything silly, he and his older sister still get their photo taken with Santa each year, wearing ugly Christmas sweaters. His dad, a respected cardiologist, enthusiastically promotes his show to regular patients while, to his amusement, his mum dreams of plans for a range of Noah merchandise.
Generally quiet as a child, there were times he delighted in being the centre of attention. Completing kindergarten at Toorak College, he was the only boy who stayed on throughout Grade 1. The experience gave him a taste of how it feels to have his own dressing room: the junior school’s two bathrooms were labelled ‘Girls’ and ‘Noah’.
Performing on stage in musicals and playing in ensembles at Peninsula Grammar – he plays the keyboard, French horn, trombone and euphonium – equipped Noah with skills that resurface in his acts today. He composed and performs the soundtrack for his latest show.
After his stellar debut in 2024, don’t miss Noah Szto’s Med School at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. For tickets, visit www.comedyfestival.com.au
Land management practices will form part of a project to help rid the Peninsula of weeds and pest animals.
The Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network has secured almost $40,000 through Agriculture Victoria’s Partnerships Against Pests grants program to support its Partnering to Tackle Pests on the Mornington Peninsula project, which aims to ensure the people most affected by established weeds and pest animals are “central in the process of defining the problem”.
“The project will deliver practical knowledge to volunteers and professionals around pest and weed management practices through collaborative partnerships, training sessions, in-person events and
accessible resources,” the network said. “Established weeds and pest animals damage our local landscapes and waterways, cause substantial production losses and damage culturally sensitive sites of First Nations people.”
Workshops and field days, brochures and webpage development are among planned initiatives. The project brings together a “dynamic network” of partners, including Mornington Peninsula Shire, Westernport Biosphere Foundation, Melbourne Water, Bunurong Land Council, Parks Victoria, Australian Association of Bushland Regenerators, and the Friends of Flinders Coastline.
“The program will assist Landcare groups to educate, strengthen relationships and promote
collaboration in managing established invasive weeds and pest animals at a local level. The collaborative approach ensures that volunteers and professionals alike gain access to the best tools, practices and networks available.”
“We’re proud to be helping the community to play an active role in managing invasive pests and weeds that affect our local environment,” said network facilitator Chantal Morton. “Through collaboration, education and innovation, we’re not only addressing the impacts of invasive weeds and pest animals but ensuring our solutions are driven by those who know their local area best.”
Workshops scheduled for this month include developing weed management plans and coordinated
and integrated pest control plans for foxes, cats and rabbits; the Bradley method of sensitive weed control; and how to differentiate between common lookalike weed and indigenous species.
“The project is more than just an opportunity to combat weeds and pests; it’s a chance to build a stronger, more connected Landcare community,” the network said. “This initiative reflects the Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network’s commitment to empowering the community and improving outcomes in best practice pest and weed management.”

The construction industry is vital to shaping the vibrant, thriving communities of the Mornington Peninsula. Accounting for 14.3 per cent of local jobs*, the sector plays a key role in the region’s economy and creates job opportunities.
With deep industry connections and hands-on training, Chisholm Institute equips students with the skills and confidence to succeed in construction. Whether building homes or working on major infrastructure projects, this new workforce has the opportunity to make an incredible impact –and not just on the job site.
For Peninsula local and Chisholm carpentry apprenticeship student Clea White, right, what started as a childhood dream to be just like her dad has grown into a real career path. “I love the idea of building a house; someone’s going to live in that one day,” she said. “I want to own my own business and be a good role model to other young girls so they see a female builder out there doing her own stuff.”
Clea is also carving out her place on social media. After attending the 2024 Bowens Building + Innovation Expo as a guest of Chisholm, she was given Bowens-branded merchandise that she wore while working. Sharing her projects and tagging Bowens on social media caught its attention, leading to
an ambassador contract. Now Clea combines her carpentry skills with her growing influence online, showing how trades and social media can work hand in hand.
“Bowens being affiliated with Chisholm is really cool,” Clea said. “Without Chisholm, I wouldn’t have gone to that event.”
Chisholm’s industry connections and realworld learning approach offer access to career-forming opportunities. By equipping learners with practical skills and valuable networks, Chisholm ensures students are ready to thrive in their fields – sometimes in ways they never expected.

Women on the Peninsula are the heart of our families, businesses, and communities.
This International Women’s Day, let’s commit to breaking down the barriers women still face in healthcare, family support, safety, and opportunities to thrive.
As your Independent for Flinders, I’ll fight for:
→ Funding for women’s health services, including better access to HRT medication and endometriosis treatment
→ Practical support for Peninsula families, including one year paid flexible parental leave and free childcare
→ Investment in local women-led businesses & entrepreneurs through increased grants programs and funding opportunities
→ Funding for family violence and crisis accommodation, including support services.
Let’s put people over politics this election, and make the Peninsula a better place for everyone who lives here.

WITH ITS ABUNDANCE OF VINEYARDS, THE PENINSULA HAS ITS SHARE OF WINE SPECIALISTS, BUT DID YOU KNOW OUR REGION IS ALSO HOME TO AN INTERNATIONALLY ESTEEMED TEA EXPERT?
Tony Laurent’s first experience of a tea estate was in 1967 when he visited Darjeeling as a wide-eyed eight-year-old. His father captained ships transporting tea from Ceylon and India to Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the Gulf States and Pakistan, and Tony would often accompany him between school terms. Well-travelled with a childhood steeped in global culture, Tony and his family were based by turns in Melbourne, Kobe, Mumbai, Hong Kong and London.
Given Tony’s background, a future in the tea business made sense, yet it wasn’t something he originally considered. “Actually, my entry into the global tea industry was more by chance,” he said. “After my time at Monash University, I was chilling in
West London, catching up with old school pals and focused more on beer than tea. After a couple of months, my mother turned up. I’d been offered a job at an investment bank but turned it down, as I hated the idea of being in one location for the next 40 years.
"On the plus side, she brought me tea and Weet-Bix in bed every morning. All good, until one morning she brought the newspaper and had circled a job opening as a trainee tea trader at Brooke Bond Commodities Ltd.”
Vowing he would head back to Melbourne if he didn’t get the job, Tony made a shortlist of three from 200 applicants. “And what do you know, the commodities division big boss was an Australian and had been in charge of the Bushells factory overlooking
Monash. So I started in tea in London, the capital of the global tea world.”
At the world’s biggest tea firm, he learnt every aspect of trading tea as well as selling to such companies as Tetley, Twinings, Lipton, Bushells, Barry’s, and Typhoo. “Trading tea became my favourite tea industry activity, especially when I was posted in Indonesia and Kenya – two countries where I spent a total of 20 years and really enjoyed.” Since returning to Melbourne in 2013, his main activity has been consulting on the supply chain for major global players – including Unilever, his employer of 27 years – as well as some smaller ones.
If Tony’s face looks familiar, it may be from his appearance on Who Do You Think You Are? When Delta Goodrem
discovered her great-great-grandfather was a tea planter in Assam, Tony was the expert engaged by SBS to cover the history of tea in the region.
He’s now an adviser for the largest functional tea firm in China while simultaneously negotiating a project with a niche tea firm in Oregon.
Until recently, Tony held classes in Mornington and across Melbourne on all aspects of tea: its history, how it’s grown, and the art of brewing. While that’s no longer his focus, he is open to providing a bespoke experience for hospitality groups or consumers on request – if you can catch him between overseas trips, that is. To learn more about Tony and his wonderful world of tea, visit www.bespoketeacompany. com.au
AUSTRALIAN SURVIVOR: BRAINS V BRAWN II AIRED ON FEBRUARY 17 ON CHANNEL 10 AND 10 PLAY WITH LOCAL CONTESTANT LAURA NOONAN, ALSO KNOWN AS NOONAN.
By Kate Sears
While filming began in July last year, Noonan’s Survivor journey was 10 years in the making. She’d applied for the series 10 times, with her video auditions portraying her dramatic and creative side through her relationship with her family. Noonan’s dad is a horse trainer, her mum is a costume designer, her eldest brother is an actor, another brother is a jockey, and another is a teacher.
Growing up on the Mornington Peninsula as the last lesser-known Noonan has motivated her through her Survivor applications. As she progressed further in the casting process each year, the excitement was building. Her winning application was solo and included a simple face-to-camera off-script monologue that started with: “Look, you know who I am at this point; it’s Noonan’s world, and you’re all just living in it.”
“Every year my application was the talk of my footy club and drama club, with everyone asking if I’d apply. Of course I would,” Noonan said. “I never kept how far I was moving along in the process a secret until my last application. Just before I left, I gathered the girls in my footy team together to announce that I wouldn’t be in the finals. They all screamed.”
While her mum focused on when Noonan would finish her teaching degree – she works as a learning support officer – her brothers exploded with excitement, and the news didn’t reach her dad until she arrived home after filming.
“Years prior, Dad and I had an interesting conversation while watching Survivor. He was repeatedly interrupting by asking dumb questions, so I snapped and told him to be quiet. He looked at me and jokingly said: ‘You won’t make it on Survivor, and you won’t win.’ So he’s now taking credit for giving me
motivation. But he’s genuinely proud. Ten years ago I set a goal, and now I’ve achieved it.” Obsessed with Survivor since 2003, it’s no surprise that Noonan rates her time on the show as the best experience of her life and that she’d do it again in a heartbeat. The Survivor magic created such an amazing adventure, and Survivor will dominate her personality for another 10 years.
“Everything you see of me is real; I was authentically myself the whole time. My emotions and actions were real. There was no strategy behind my personality. I will be the Noonan you’ll remember. I loved every second of it and I’ve made friends for life. I think in a way we’re bonded for life; trauma bonding is real, even if in this case we bonded during a positive experience.”
Noonan was a member of the Brawn tribe, and as an avid team player and sportswoman her experience in footy, netball, dance, horse riding and swimming assisted her Survivor game.
“My strength, agility and coordination helped me. Advantages heading into the game were knowing my strengths and weaknesses and acknowledging that I’m no pro. To prepare for Survivor I was training three to four times a week, and I strengthened my mental capacity and my ability not to give up.”
Noonan’s football coach organised a premier party for the airing of the first episode at their clubrooms in Mornington.
“I think when everyone watches my journey, they’ll be shocked,” Noonan said. “I’m underestimated a lot and now everyone will see the whole package. I want to be remembered as the fun-loving, over-the-top girl obsessed with Survivor. I’m not after fame, only Survivor – so, producers of Survivor All Stars, sign me up!”

Imagine sinking a perfect basketball shot without ever seeing the hoop. At Frankston and District Basketball Association, this seemingly impossible feat is becoming a reality through bell ball, an innovative free program that's putting a whole new spin on the game.
Using specially designed balls with bells and sound-guided shooting, this exciting initiative is opening up the world of basketball to people who are blind or have low vision.
Bell ball’s inception came from a simple question that sparked a realisation. “It was inspired by a person with low vision who asked me if we could cater for people who are blind or have low vision,” said FDBA program support officer Tanya Thomas. “I realised we couldn’t.”
What followed was a collaborative effort using co-design principles, working alongside community members with vision impairments to create an accessible and engaging basketball experience.
The adaptations are clever yet straightforward. Balls with bells help players track the ball’s movement, while sound rings guide shooting accuracy. The program even features a braille court map and a handbook with code words to ensure participant safety.
Success stories are already emerging from the court. “One of our participants, Dan, has become so confident on court,” Tanya said. “He is moving at a quicker pace than I have ever seen him do.” Seeing blind participant Liz get her first goal and have the confidence to dribble the ball
the length of the court was another memorable achievement highlighting the program’s impact.
A typical session begins with verbal introductions, followed by warm-ups and gentle stretches. Popular drills include ‘piggy in the middle’, full-court dribbling, and passing exercises. The program welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. Notably, people without vision impairments are also encouraged to try this version of basketball, fostering an inclusive environment.
The program’s benefits extend far beyond the court. “Bell ball contributes to building confidence and independence by showing our participants that they can do anything they set their mind to,” Tanya said. “With any modifications they need to participate, bell ball is now anyone’s
game, and our participants love playing.” For those hesitant to try, Tanya offered reassuring words: “Come along to a session; there is no pressure to participate in any parts. And we can share our programs within a oneto-one setting to ease any worry or concerns around playing.”
Looking ahead, Tanya hopes to see bell ball expand beyond Frankston.
“I hope other basketball clubs and associations will pick this program up and begin running it as well. Only then can we expand the sport and move to a competition-style game as opposed to just skills and drills.”
For more information about joining bell ball, contact the Frankston and District Basketball Association on email at programs@fdba.com.au or phone 9776 8999.

Observing the night sky from southern latitudes this month with a good pair of binoculars will give you plenty to see, including the open cluster known as the Southern Pleiades (IC 2602). Its brightest member, the star Theta Carinae, can be seen with the unaided eye.
If you turn binoculars on the cluster, you can see about 24 other sparkling stars. Just north of the Southern Pleiades is the glowing region NGC 3372, visible to the naked eye. Also known as the Carina Nebula, it is beautiful when observed through a small telescope.
To the south is the False Cross, which is formed by four stars in the constellations Carina and Vela. The False Cross asterism resembles the constellation Crux, the Southern Cross, but is somewhat larger. Still looking south you’ll find the globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139), the largest globular cluster in the Milky Way and a must-see object.
A large telescope shows many of its stars, while binoculars show the cluster as a bright patch of light. In the west, the Jewel Box open cluster (NGC 4755), in Crux, is a nice target for small telescopes and binoculars.
Meanwhile Spica, the brightest star in Virgo, twinkles away in the east, with the blazing Canopus in Carina taking centre stage in the south-west sky. The constellation Orion is gradually sinking out of view, so make the most of it before it disappears.
This month’s conjunctions, which is when two astronomical objects appear close to each other in the sky, include the moon and Mercury on March 1, the moon and Venus on March 2, Mercury and Neptune on March 3, the moon and Jupiter on March 6, the moon and Mars, and Venus and Mercury, on March 9, and the moon and Saturn on March 28. On March 24 is the Saturn
ring plane crossing, which occurs when Earth or the sun pass through the plane of Saturn's rings. This happens every 13 to 15 years and allows us to see the rings edge-on.

My reserved, introverted, anxious, 13 year old had the most fantastic time at one of the summer camps. She went not knowing anyone else, and made connections with other campers as well as with the camp leaders. Raved about the food, the activities, just EVERYTHING and had asked to go back next holidays. A bigger endorsement you could never get! She came home with so much confidence in her ability to do new things, we cannot thank you enough.

n Thursday, March 23, 1939, the Melbourne newspaper the Argus reported the arrival in these words: “With a trumpeting of siren, a screech of motor-horns, and a raucous welcome from sea and shore, the new motor-vessel Dominion Monarch reached Port Melbourne on Sunday.” She had made the passage in 31 days, having departed from London on February 17, which was record for the route via the Cape of Good Hope.
Dominion Monarch was built for Shaw, Savill and Albion Co. at Wallsend on Tyne, England. She was an unusual ship for her time because some of her hull was of welded construction while the remainder was built using the traditional method of riveting, and she was powered by diesel engines. For some time she remained the world’s most powerful motor ship, with her four five-cylinder Doxford engines each driving a propeller and giving her a top speed of 21.5 knots (almost 40km/h). At that time, most passenger ships were powered by steam turbines.
Though nominally a passenger vessel, she was really a cargo liner, having accommodation for only 525 passengers in first class. The space available in her holds was about 18,000 cubic metres and she could carry nearly 12,000 tonnes of frozen meat or dairy products. Contemporary ships of P&O and Orient lines, though marginally smaller, carried twice the number of passengers.
Dominion Monarch travelled via the Cape of Good Hope, and after her call at Melbourne she went on to Sydney and Wellington and returned to the UK, stopping at the same ports as on the outward passage.
Soon after she began service, World War II broke out, and for most of the war years, with her first class trimmings put in storage, she served as a troopship accommodating more than 3500 troops. Returned to her owners in 1947, she continued the service begun in 1939, and when the new flagship of the company, the Southern Cross, was built, the two ships began a round-the-world service in alternate directions. The ports on the service were London, Las Palmas, Cape Town, Fremantle, Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington, Fiji, French Polynesia, Panama and Curacao.
In 1962 she was replaced by the Northern Star and was scrapped the following year.

Solahart Melbourne & Mornington Peninsula has once again helped a local homeowner embrace a sustainable future. John Smith, a long-time Solahart customer, recently upgraded his home in Rye, VIC with a cutting-edge solar energy system—his third installation with Solahart.
John’s vision was clear: reduce reliance on the grid, lower energy costs, and replace an inefficient electric hot water system. Solahart delivered a smart, integrated solution featuring:
• A high-performance solar power system to generate clean energy.
• Battery storage for enhanced energy independence.
• Solahart PowerStore® – a grid-interactive smart electric water heater that stores excess solar energy as hot water, reducing hot water energy consumption.
• Solahart Home Energy Management System (HEMS) – intelligently managing energy use to maximise savings.
The sleek Solahart Silhouette® all-black solar panels were the perfect choice—efficient, powerful, and stylish, enhancing the home’s aesthetics while maximising savings. With projected energy savings of up to 95%, John expects to save around $3,000 per year.
“This is the third time we’ve installed Solahart systems, and each experience has been exceptional. Our energy savings have also been terrific and in fact, our last power bill was zero, which is the first time we’ve had that in our lifetime,” John shared.

There would be a dramatic and sudden decrease in the quantity of flowers found in artist Charlie Ryan’s Red Hill garden when his mother Susan would come to stay.
“Mum has always loved the daily ritual of walks outside and picking flowers and foliage from wherever her wanderings have taken her,” Charlie said. “And each afternoon the house would be filled with the colours and scents of that day’s bounty.”
The artist cheerily admitted that he would always have a pair of secateurs, some rubber bands and crumpled-up plastic bags on standby for her visits.
When the COVID-19 lockdowns hit Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula in 2020, Susan stayed for longer. Running his Five Creative design business from his kitchen table, Charlie fondly recalled how he very quickly ran out of vases and turned to finding new ‘vessels’ such as his coffee plunger, cups, and glass jars to
hold his mother’s growing collection of daily floral arrangements.
These cherished memories and Susan’s own ritual of celebrating each day’s harvest have become the inspiration behind Charlie’s latest series of painted works and upcoming exhibition at & Gallery Australia in Sorrento.
Titled Vessels Bloom, the collection includes a unique series of beautiful compositions of both impressionist and abstract works portraying an interpretation of selected flowers and vessels from Charlie’s home.
“We ourselves are all vessels of memory, as can be the things we keep and grow,” Charlie said. “This collection is the distillation of memories within memories: of kindred, human connections engrained deep within objects of sentimental value.”
The exhibition opens on Saturday, March 1, with an event from 3-5.30pm, and runs until March 30. & Gallery Australia is at 21 Morce Ave, Sorrento.

It’s a cold winter day and mother of three Terri Hamer is close to tears. In suburban Mornington she wonders how she’ll be able to pay the bills that are arriving daily.
Terri notices a For Sale sign in her street. The house sits vacant, unfurnished. She picks up the phone and dials. “Hi,” she says. “My name is Terri and I’m a home styling specialist.”
And just like that, Get Staged was born. The agent agreed to stage the home and quickly sold that property. More followed. Terri doorknocked real estate agents from Mornington to Rye, building awareness and business.
Today, Terri is the stylist and director of Get Staged, one of the biggest home staging businesses on the Mornington Peninsula. With enough stock to furnish 50 homes, things are booming.
"In a competitive market, the best-presented properties demand higher sale prices,” she said. “Astute agents know this, and as a result they engage the services of styling professionals like Get Staged.”

or more than 35 years, Mount Martha resident Donna McEvoy has thrived on organising special events – and as a mother of five there have been many.
In 2014, when searching for a wedding venue for their son, Donna and her husband stumbled across a For Sale sign at the front of Tanglewood Estate, a Merricks North winery they had long admired and pictured as a premier wedding venue. So they seized the opportunity and bought it.
With old-growth native bush, reclaimed-material buildings and stunning bay views, the estate already had plenty of natural charm, and over the next two years the pair added to that with new buildings, renovations, and unique touches like the 110-year-old wooden chapel they transported from country Victoria to create a breathtaking ceremony space.
The first wedding at Tanglewood was for their eldest son, and since then more than 400 couples have said "I do" at this remarkable venue. With her all-female team, Donna ensures weddings run seamlessly, allowing couples to celebrate their whole day without leaving the estate.
Passionate about supporting people who help others, Donna has also opened the venue pro bono to special needs groups and mental health and healing workshops. She really is the heart of Tanglewood.

Great things come from humble beginnings, and this is true for Illona. After the loss of her daughter and needing to find her spark again, Illona rediscovered her passion for fashion. But her frustrations at a lack of on-trend clothing for women over 40 prompted her to host fashion parties for friends and family, which led to an aha moment and her vision
for Indigo Threads was born. Illona opened her first boutique in Somerville, followed two years later by another in Mornington and an online store.
Now with outlets at Mornington and Hastings, shopping at Indigo Threads is tailored to the needs of each individual and encourages shoppers to embrace their individuality.
“It's more than just clothes,” Illona said. “It's about empowering women and lifting the stigma around what women ‘should’ wear.”

SANDI’S LEGACY OF CARE
Lifelong Peninsula resident Sandi Grace is passionate about contributing to her community – and what a contribution she has made.
Sandi founded Grace Professional Services in 2019, becoming a registered NDIS provider in February 2020 and hiring her first employee one week before the first COVID lockdown. “I primarily hire people living with disability or who have lived experience in providing care,” she said.
During lockdown, Sandi worked 20-hour days to support our most vulnerable, but that didn’t stop her applying to become a foster carer with Anglicare Victoria. “I get so much joy from fostering, and I want people to know that a busy
lifestyle is no reason not to offer a home to children in need if you have a spare room and space in your heart.”
Sandi founded domestic violence support group Sisterhood FMP and was president of the Frankston Toy Library, helping it become one of the country’s largest during her 13-year association. She even found time to run for Frankston City Council last year.
This year, Grace Professional Services received its sixth Best Practice Award for Governance and Organisational Management with a perfect score during its NDIS audit. It was a fitting accolade for this genuine powerhouse and her amazing team.

Each year, Yo-Ko Original Boutique owner Annie Spoelder recognises International Women's Day, and while it might be an ‘international’ event, it gives her the chance to thank and celebrate the women within her own circle and community and in her life.
“I place great value on the relationships I share with my customers and the women who live in my area,” Annie said. “Every woman has a story; sometimes that story is tinged with sadness, hardship and struggle; and sometimes with joy and new beginnings. I so admire the tenacity and strength these women have to not only face what it is they have to face, but who so often do that with courage and grace.
“Your capacity as women to embrace life in all its fullness gives me reason to thank and honour each and every one of you. Happy International Women's Day to you all – locally and internationally.”

International Women’s Day is a celebration of strength, resilience and progress. As a financial adviser, I’m privileged to support women taking control of their financial futures, empowering them to build security, confidence and independence.
Financial literacy is a critical life skill, and I’m passionate about guiding women of all ages to make informed decisions that shape their best lives.
Throughout my career I’ve witnessed the power of knowledge and the impact it has on confidence. Whether it's helping women retire on their terms, supporting single mothers in securing their futures or encouraging younger generations to invest early, the goal remains the same: to create financial freedom and choices.
On this day we celebrate how far we’ve come, and we continue advocating for a future where all women have the tools, education and opportunities to thrive financially and beyond. Empowered women empower communities.

My journey of empowerment began with a profound awakening, a deep realisation of my worth. In that moment I made a vow: no one would ever take my power from me again. The pain I endured became the spark for my passion, a fierce desire to help other women rediscover their inner strength and rise into their own power.
Every woman’s journey is a powerful adventure of self-discovery, an opportunity to embrace strength, authenticity and confidence. True empowerment doesn’t happen overnight; it unfolds through growth, self-reflection, and the unwavering belief that we are capable of achieving greatness.
Releasing fear and doubt initiates transformation. While life remains challenging, we become stronger.
Empowerment is a lifestyle that radiates confidence and inspires others. Embracing inner strength unlocks a life of authenticity, love, and limitless potential.
The power has always been within you. Now is the time to own it.

ngela Lord is an inspirational example of a woman with a dream seizing the chance to make it come true. Angela had long wanted to share the rich and diverse flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine with her Frankston community, so she and her partner Craig, who is now her husband, started La Foodies.
When it was named one of Melbourne's top five food trucks in 2020, that was all the encouragement they needed to open Ceylon Girl's Cafe.
“Ceylon Girl's Cafe & Bar is a commitment to authenticity,” Angela said.
“We take pride in crafting and sharing with our customers the traditional Sri Lankan and Burgher dishes that are getting harder to find outside home kitchens and the jealously guarded family recipes of our forebears. When you are eating our food, you are not only tasting my recipes, but those of my mother, her mother, in-laws, and so on back for generations.”

So often, when I look at a thriving Peninsula small business, I find a fabulous Flinders woman at the helm.
A couple of weeks ago, Sussan Ley joined me for a women in business roundtable, and we heard from women in retail, agriculture, training, health, hospitality, and a range of other sectors. It was a constructive, collaborative, clearly expressed and commonsense conversation about the challenges facing Australian business: cost of living, local taxes, energy prices, access to skills, and respite from red tape.
Late last year, I met our local female Olympic champions – Eileen Cikamatana in weightlifting, Emily Whitehead in artistic gymnastics, and Caitlin Parker and Tyla McDonald in boxing – who proudly donned the green and gold at the Paris Olympics.
When I was elected in 2022, women formed only 39 per cent of members of the House of Representatives; in fact, I am the only Victorian Liberal woman member. A 2022 report from Plan International revealed that girls and young women in Australia feel excluded from the political landscape. This must change and our numbers must grow.
Today, I make sure to listen to and mentor as many young women of any political hue as I can. Australia needs you.

HOW SWEET IT IS
Our Sweet Pantry has become the goto destination for cake-lovers on the Mornington Peninsula.
Lorraine and Monique, a passionate mother and daughter, started with a dream of having a little van and shopfront where residents, holidaymakers and anyone with a sweet tooth could enjoy gorgeously tempting cakes and delightfully delicious cookies whenever the craving struck.
Their journey began at local markets, and during the COVID-19 pandemic they expanded into an online shop – complete with a ‘create your own’ section – and started shipping their tasty creations across Australia. In 2022, they opened their cosy retail shop in Capel Sound, and it has since become a haven for custommade birthday, wedding and event cakes. It’s also the place to find scrumptious cakes and desserts that they make fresh daily.
Lorraine and Monique are joined by a dedicated team of four hardworking, passionate women who bring their vision to life every day, ensuring each sweet treat is made with love and care.

Being the owner of Talking Hens as well as a mum keeps Giuliana Postregna pretty busy, but it comes with lots of benefits too.
“Variety is one of the many things I enjoy about my work, which can range from organising events such as our annual open days and workshops to bookkeeping, dealing with suppliers and creating new products,” Giuliana said. “I particularly enjoy chatting with our customers. I learn a great deal from their experiences with their hens and any challenges they face.
Another joy is the time spent with my daughter with her after-school activities.
“I know that with passion, hard work and a willingness to learn, great progress can be made. There will be many experiences both good and bad that provide real benefit and growth. With every challenge I ask myself: What did I learn from this experience and what can I do differently next time?”

After moving to the Mornington Peninsula in March 2021, Tracy Austin decided to share her love of natural fibres and inclusivity in fashion.
What started as a rack of merino possum knitwear at Dromana Indoor Market grew into Detendu’s outlet store. Such was the response that Tracy established a pop-up at McCrae Plaza for summer in 2023 and moved into her permanent space in Rosebud in March last year.
Detendu’s range of fashions includes Australian brands Orientique, Rubyyaya, Lulalife, Lulasoul, Ibiza, Carbon, and Bridge & Lord, and international labels Noble Wilde, Ireland Eye, Trelise Cooper, Stella + Gemma, Dolcezza, URBAN, and Maloka. There’s a sale on now with up to 80 per cent off.
“We love giving customers an opportunity to buy new at affordable prices and are proudly a size-inclusive store, with sizes 6-24,” Tracy said. “Pop in to see what the hype is about; we look forward to meeting you.”

When children struggle with learning, anxiety or big emotions, parents often search for answers in conventional places. But on the Mornington Peninsula, an extraordinary partnership between ponies and people is changing young lives in unexpected ways.
What if the secret to unlocking your child's potential isn't found in a classroom but in a paddock with a gentle pony? In Somerville, two innovative educators are proving that some of the best teachers have four legs and a tail. Anna Herba and Jacqui Murphy are the visionary founders of Nurturing Neighs Equine Assisted Learning, a sanctuary where ponies help children blossom in ways traditional education never could.
Their journey began with their own children's challenges. For Anna, it was watching her 13-year-old son struggle with peer pressure and social exclusion. “That's when we found EAL (equine-assisted learning) and the life-changing effect it had on him. It helped to shape a confident and strong leader that he is today.”
Jacqui's story resonates with many parents of sensitive children. “My middle daughter at a very young age struggled with connection and had really big feelings that overwhelmed her. It was in these moments I would
take her out to her pony, helping her to feel calm and held.”
The pair met at a Montessori kindergarten where Anna taught Jacqui's daughters. Their complementary skills – Anna's two decades of teaching experience and Jacqui's 25 years of horsemanship –created the perfect foundation for their venture.
Their programs range from Pony Tales and Mini Tales for younger children to specialised sessions supporting literacy, numeracy and leadership skills for older children and teens. Anna said the results were transforming. “Many children come to us feeling anxious, unsure and uncomfortable, especially performing in front of peers in a conventional classroom. We have created a safe, non-judgemental environment where they leave us feeling confident and better learners.”
One success story particularly illustrates their impact. They worked with a young boy who initially struggled with balance, coordination and confidence. “At the start he was so worried about leading the ponies around; now he is going up to them, putting their halter on and walking them around all by himself,” Jacqui said.
What sets Nurturing Neighs apart is its gentle, respectful approach to both children and ponies.
“We hold space for our ponies so they feel heard and supported by us. We guide children in our programs to listen to the ponies’ body language and work with them so they feel comfortable around each other.”
“We know firsthand that this works,” Anna said. “It helped our children develop confidence, emotionally grow and strengthen their academic skills. And the best part is they didn't realise they were learning, as there was no stress or pressure to perform.”
The women’s vision extends beyond their current programs. “We would like to liaise with more school principals, community hubs and other
organisations to bring our learning programs to schools all over the Peninsula and broader community,” Jacqui said.
Drawing from both Montessori philosophy and natural horsemanship principles, Nurturing Neighs offers a fresh perspective on learning and emotional development for families trotting down the conventional education path.
Thanks to Anna and Jacqui, young minds are discovering that sometimes the best life lessons come wrapped in a velvety muzzle and the swish of a tail.

Mar 21-Apr 19 March is a month for Ariens to go with the flow and is, for many, their birthday month. If you feel of two minds, defer long-term decisions, especially if born close to March 30. Venus, the planet of love, remains in Aries until late March, highlighting love and popularity.
Apr 20-May 20 Restless Uranus continues its journey through Taurus, unsettling your natural ability to focus. But inventiveness and great ideas are possible mid-March. The extra load on March 12 is temporary, but a blast from the past could provide a learning experience.
May 21-Jun 20 Even flexible Geminis can be unnerved by changing circumstances at home, work or school. Remember that protective Jupiter still has your back. Keep an open mind about the roller-coaster attitudes of some groups and clubs.

Jun 21-Jul 22 A short escape at the start of the month can prepare you for the busy mid-March period. To avoid misunderstandings, check details, especially in the work environment. Old friends can be pure gold and international interests could open new doors.
Jul 23-Aug 22 Fluctuating finances and changing priorities during March require extra precaution and a firm hand. Leo brainwaves can help save the day, especially mid-month. March 12 may be a day of reckoning to heighten your credibility.
Sep 23-Oct 22 Loving Venus, your ruling planet, promises some interesting action this month. A new opportunity could attract happy times, but also an ultimatum. For the more adventurous Librans, a reality check around March 12 requires help from the troops or even a trip to the doctor.
Oct 23-Nov 22 During March, others may not be as willing as usual to agree with magnetic Scorpios. Use your welldeveloped intuition to settle ruffled feathers. Changes within your group require tact, understanding or, to let off steam, a great game of competitive sport.
Aug 23-Sep 22 A karmic month for Virgos, especially around the eclipsed full moon on March 14. A special relationship may be highlighted and changes made as a result of new insight and deeper feelings. Practical success continues, provided you don’t lose sight of the details.
Nov 23-Dec 21 The eclipsed full moon on March 14 shines on your home, work or school environment. Some indecision could delay your original blueprint, but you still have plenty of support. New developments and greener pastures can alter your ambitions. Crossroads for children.
Dec 22-Jan 20 Is it possible to have too much on your plate? To achieve success, March is an important month to pace yourself and plan your next break. Try some pampering to help balance your many commitments and resolve to find time for a happy family environment.
Jan 21-Feb 19 The power of your personality is starting to shine, and many Aquarians find themselves centre stage. However, funding certain projects will be a more difficult nut to crack. A good month to plan and create. Encouragement from a neighbour or sibling could provide welcome relief.
Feb 20-Mar 20 Steer your little boat safely through the rough waters of changing attitudes, especially around the eclipsed full moon on March 14. Be flexible, have your health check and rely only on true friends. Communing with the great outdoors will help calm choppy emotional waters.
With Easter just days away, the temptation might be to rush out and buy some mass-produced gift for your nearest and dearest. But this year, why not give them something truly unique: a one-off marine-inspired artwork from She Shell Art.
Mount Martha artist Miffy Pittaway has 19 limited-edition works available to buy from Mark and Cherie Poulter’s Veraison Restaurant at 1891 Point Nepean Rd, Tootgarook, where viewing Miffy’s art is free. They include this stunning rattan lobster wall artwork that Miffy has meticulously handcrafted from sustainably and naturally sourced beach materials and seashells she has collected over the past 40 years. None of the shells come from live, critically endangered, threatened or exotic marine species. So this Easter, choose a gift you won’t find on supermarket shelves or in a $2 shop – give a unique artwork from She Shell Art that’s been handmade with love and care.

As autumn settles in, March is the perfect time to refresh your garden, savour the last of your summer crops and prepare for the cooler months ahead.
Remove underperforming plants from borders and replace them with hardy perennials, to establish strong roots before spring. Some Heronswood favourites include Dahlia ‘Cafe au Lait’, Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’, Lavender ‘Grosso’ and Geranium ‘Rozanne’.
Harvest the final summer crops: save seeds from your best performers and preserve any excess for the months ahead. Find inspiration on food preserving in the latest Diggers Club Autumn Garden 2025 magazine, available now for members.
Prune stone fruit trees after harvest to encourage new growth and improve next year’s yield. Summer pruning is used to reduce the vigour of the tree and put more energy into fruit production. Avoid pruning your stone fruit trees in winter as they are susceptible to fungal diseases that can enter the wood.
March is a dazzling time at Heronswood and our head gardener, Bill Bampton, shares some seasonal highlights to look out for on your visit:
◆ The Picking Garden is at its peak, offering a vibrant mix of flowers and foliage.
◆ Perennial border beauty: Our renowned perennial border is bursting into full bloom, with striking displays of ‘Café au Lait’ dahlias, vivid blue Echinops and bee-loved salvias.
◆ Spiral garden abundance: Packed with edibles, herbs and leafy greens, this space is a must-see for vegie enthusiasts. Get inspired to make something old new again with our repurposed bathtub planter.
◆ The Moreton Bay Fig: This 150-year-old giant provides welcome shade for garden visitors seeking a cool retreat.
◆ Sunflowers in bloom: In the Seed Preservation Garden, sunflowers are starting to shine. Heirloom varieties like ‘Teddy Bear’ and ‘Van Gogh’s Landscape’ will also feature at The Diggers Club’s 2025 Melbourne International Garden Show display. Diggers members, check out page 32 in your latest Autumn magazine for the event discount code.

Founded in 1982 by Garry and Margaret Crittenden, the winery and cellar door are now managed by their children Rollo and Zoe Crittenden, and Rollo’s wife Linda operates the onsite accommodation Lakeside Villas.
In the 1980s and ‘90s, Garry and Margaret made a dynamic team: Garry became known for his exceptional cool-climate wines, while Margaret was one of the pioneers in establishing winery restaurants on the Peninsula. However, in the early 2000s, as Margaret’s health declined, the family decided to lease the restaurant; the Pouliers took it over and established
Stillwater, which has become a cherished dining destination over the past two decades.
The purchase of the restaurant by the Crittendens from Zac Poulier means the family can once again provide an exquisite food offering to complement their extensive wine selection. “We are beyond excited to have all the businesses on the property under the Crittenden family’s management once again,” said Zoe. Rollo said: “We can’t wait to share more details as we embark on this exciting transformation to create a leading dining destination on the Peninsula.”
To make way for significant renovations and a rebranding, the restaurant will close in June, with a grand reopening planned for spring. Stillwater will continue to operate as usual until the end of May, while both The Crittenden Cellar Door and Lakeside Villas will remain open and unaffected by the changes.

130g sugar
15g balsamic vinegar
100g cashmere goat’s cheese

30g merlot vinegar

Blood of the Earth Pinot Noir 2023
You might be familiar with Todd Dexter, of Dexter Wines. Well, this is made by his son Tim and takes its name from the Balnarring vineyard. If you’re looking for a pinot with a bit more body and structure, this might be it. It's got lovely savoury broodiness from partial whole bunch fermentation, and texture from time in new and used French oak. You will be greeted with lovely red fruits: think freshly picked strawberries, then some lovely black cherry undertones to follow. There is real depth and complexity, yet it remains elegant and vibrant. I have a couple in my cellar and look forward to seeing it evolve. Pinot goes with so many foods: mushroom risotto, salmon, duck, and even roast veg with baby beets.
404 Blood of the Earth Pinot Gris 2023
Sourced from Dr Steve's Sangue di Terra (Blood of the Earth) vineyard at 404 Stumpy Gully Rd, this is a great example of a Peninsula pinot gris with a bit more oomph. You get lovely subtle lemon curdesque notes, then a hint of green crunchy pear and whiff of honeysuckle. On the palate your senses are awakened with a bit of creaminess – a result of some extensive lees ageing – then a splash of pear again and even stone fruits. The finish has a little spice from time spent maturing in older seasonal oak. Much like its cousin, this will only get better. For a gris of this style you need a good roast chook, pork, and aged cheeses. It even goes well with fish.
Onannon Chardonnay 2024
Onannon is a collaboration between Sam Middleton and Kasper Hermann of Mount Mary Wines, and Peninsula winemaker Will Byron. You’re greeted with a bouquet of aromas – think nectarine and lemon curd – but still with a bit of zesty freshness. On the palate there’s a hint of lemon zest, green apple and even rockmelon. Usually, chardonnays will have gone through some malolactic fermentation, giving you those distinct buttery notes. Not this one, and that is actually quite appealing. However, there is some time spent on lees with a combination of new and used oak, which does give it that textural richness I look for. It’s quite a vibrant, sassy but leaner style of chardonnay that will go perfectly with fish and chips or other greasy foods.
Port Phillip Estate Salasso Rosé 2024
Port Phillip is a staple on the Peninsula wine scene. This 2024 edition of its Salasso Rosé is full of life, with rosewater, fresh strawberry, raspberry, and a herbal savoury edge. Upon your first sip you are greeted with this lovely clean freshness, with vibrant red berry fruit: raspberry, strawberry, and some just-ripe red plum. This rosé has a little spice to it, but with enough creaminess to balance that out on the finish. Weighing in at only 12.5% abv, this is the perfect Peninsula rosé for warmer months and is perfect with a charcuterie board with creamy cheeses while you are cooking on the barbecue.
- Cheers, Nigel

Selling a home can be very stressful and a lot of work, and that's before you even come onto market.
Preparing a house for sale may involve repairs, renovating key areas, decluttering, cleaning, tidying the garden, painting, and cleaning the windows. At the same time you need to interview real estate agents, organise a Contract of Sale and Section 32, and perhaps arrange to store your furniture if styling of your home is a consideration. Going to open for inspections of similar homes is also a good idea.
When everything is ready, your property will be listed online with the various real estate selling portals, and in most cases your agent will recommend weekly
open for inspections, usually on a Saturday. Keeping your home clean and tidy and the lawns mown is important during the campaign. Being flexible about providing your agent and buyers with access to view your home is also helpful.
There is no skill in selling a property cheaply, which any agent can do. By interviewing several agents, you gain a better understanding of the value of your home and which agent you can trust to get you the highest price. A great agent will work closely with you before coming on market, with advice on how to achieve the best price. They will then work hard to secure the highest result for you while protecting your advertised price and keeping you well informed
about your prospective buyers and the market.
A great agent is agile, experienced, knowledgeable, patient and earnest. A lesser agent may promise the world, deliver little, push for a quick sale, encourage offers below your agreed selling price, and put in little effort. Be sure who you entrust to sell your home and the rest will be smooth selling.
